Trek 820 is a mountain bike suitable for beginners because it’s affordable yet well-made. This means it has a quality steel frame, Shimano components, and front suspension for absorbing bumps. In addition, it’s available in a step-through option suitable for women.

Below, you will learn more about it, and I will also explain how it differs from more expensive mountain bikes .

Is Trek 820 a Good Bike?

Trek 820 is a good bike considering its price of $499.99 (when writing this review).

For this money, you get:

• An entry-level mountain bike with front fork suspension for absorbing bumps.
• A steel frame with a relaxed geometry for a comfortable riding position.
• Shimano Tourney groupset and Bontrager components.

You don’t have to use it strictly for off-road riding. Many owners also use it for commuting on paved roads.

However, if necessary, you can easily cross unpaved sections full of potholes, rocks, etc. The wide, knobby tires and front suspension will absorb them so you can enjoy a comfortable ride.

Another feature of why Trek 820 is popular is its gear range. Thanks to the 3X chainring and 7spd cassette, you can choose from 21 gears.

Trek 820 is suitable for riders 4’6″ – 6’8″ (137-203 cm) tall and has a weight limit of up to 300 lbs (136 kg).

Owner’s Experience with Trek 820

“It’s a steel frame bike with front suspension great for mild mountain biking. Suspension is definitely on the stiffer side and can bottom out somewhat easily.

My bike is almost entirely stock, minus the front wheel and grips. The saddle is also a factory replacement, and the decals on the front suspension are missing.

The bike and I were hit by a car last year. The front wheel was destroyed, and there were some heavy scratches on the paint. The decals on the fork were torn apart. I was able to hide the blemishes with some touch-up paint.

The bike was serviced after the accident, and only the front wheel and left crank arm needed replacement. So, needless to say, the bike is very robust and strong.

If I had one complaint about the bike, the gearing is far too short, and there are some big jumps between gears. But it’s a low-end bike, so that’s understandable.

Tires handle loose or muddy terrain fine but are very loud and slow on the pavement.

The Trek 820 is a robust, rugged lower-end / entry-level mountain bike. It’s dependable, relatively capable, and very comfortable.

I’d recommend this for someone new to riding, mountain biking specifically. It’s a great way to get out on some trails without breaking the bank. I feel I can take great confidence in knowing it is a solid bike that I won’t have to ever really worry about.”

Main Features of Trek 820

Below, I explain Trek 820’s features and how they compare to more expensive mountain bikes.

Durable Steel Frame

Trek 820 is one of the few mountain bikes based on a steel frame.

Steel is relatively affordable, durable, and stiff but heavy. So, if you don’t care about the bike’s overall weight and durability is your priority, Trek 820 is the bike to buy.

More expensive mountain bikes have aluminum or carbon frames. You can read my article dedicated to bike frame materials , where you learn more about their benefits.

On the other side of the spectrum are aluminum mountain bikes. For example, Trek 3700 and Trek 4300 have an aluminum frame.

Another thing I want to point out is the frame geometry. It’s relatively relaxed, so you will sit in a more upright position, which is suitable for beginners and people with limited flexibility.

26-Inch Wheels

Trek 820 comes with 26-inch wheels. These are more agile, accelerate faster, and feel more responsive than 27.5 or 29-inch wheels.

But, they are not as fast and comfortable as the other two alternatives. On the other hand, 26″ wheels provide better maneuverability.

If you can, I recommend trying them in person so you can feel the riding difference.

Trek 820 is equipped with Shimano Tourney (shifters, derailleurs, cranks, cassette), Bontrager, and other 3rd party components.

Of course, they are low-end because the bike’s price doesn’t allow for more expensive components.

820 also comes with rim brakes. Today’s mountain bikes mostly come with disc brakes. But they are more expensive and also heavier than rim brakes.

Another thing to mention is the width of the handlebar. Trek’s 820 handlebar is only 660-690mm (depending on the bike size). Modern mountain bikes come with 700 to 800mm handlebars.

The current generation of Trek 820 comes with a 3×7spd drivetrain, offering 21 gears.

This range is wide enough for various terrains. Just make sure you avoid cross-chaining. See the following illustration for more info.

The disadvantage of the 3X drivetrains is their complexity, more complicated maintenance, and higher weight.

More expensive mountain bikes come with 2X or 1X drivetrains that are much simpler.

You don’t have to think about the cross-chaining with them as much. They are also lighter and easier to maintain. That’s why they are more popular.

Suspension Fork

Trek 820 comes with a 75mm travel SR Suntour M-3030 fork (unlike the old Trek 800 ).

The travel of forks on entry-level mountain bikes ranges from 50 to 100mm. So, it sits somewhere in the middle.

This travel will absorb some bumps, but it’s not suitable for hard trails, for example.

In other words, it’s less forgiving than mountain bikes with longer travel and higher quality forks (that cost the same as the entire Trek 820).

Remember, SR Suntour M-3030 is one of the cheapest forks on the market. So you shouldn’t expect much from it.

My Trek 820 was purchased in Riyadh Saudi Arabia and came with 27” wheels. I didn’t know this was not standard. I have ridden my Trek all over Saudi Arabia for 4 years and Have now ridden for 4 years in Florida. It has worked well and now I bought a full suspension Trek Fuel 5. The Trek is a great bike!

Petr, Have you ever replaced the front brake post on an 820 fork? They appear to screw into the fork. There is an 820 on a local salvage auction with the brake post partially broke off. It probably broke off when they tried to remove the brake assembly. The bike looks in great shape except for this. Is this worth bidding on to fix? If so how much? (I’m an old retired guy–74–and I fix bikes for charities or for kids whose families can’t afford a low end $500 bike as you call it. To me that’s a high end bike. I don’t intend to be judgmental or offensive to you in any way, I just cater to a much poorer client. Low end for me is free – $25. I donate 98% of the bikes I fix. I have more time than money, so I fix most things others throw away. I believe this would be a great bike for someone, but don’t want to waste the money if it can’t be salvaged without completely replacing the fork. For my purposes it’s not worth replacing the fork.) Hi i had order 6 full blooded black moscow guppies it has been over a year ago i have got a few more now and are doing really well with them . I even gave my sister some two diff times. but i have someone who want to buy a trio of them for 15 dollars and i have not sold any before i did pay alot for them and i need to know a good price for them.i did trade a trio for some other fish. and also i ask the petstore worker if he wanted more than 1 trio for his coworker and he said no i will sell him some of mine after i get them breeding.so i do know he wants just for a profit . What should i do ? or just hold till spring and sell on aquabid there full blooded and pure never been mixed. Thank you for any replys

Hey starfish, I've been thinking seriously of getting some black moscows myself, and would like to ask how you've found them for hardiness. I've heard a couple of comments about how sensitive they can be to water conditions, and may not last long. I've not had good experience with Japanese blues, and wrote it off to low pH (in the 6.5 range) - but that may not have been the problem.

This time I had to make some corrections and deny few of my statements?! Also, this will be my final word on this topic.

One of the best (if not the best) ever Russian guppy breeder Vladimir Storozchev, and many other Russian breeders when talking about guppies they do not talk about Blue (Green, Purple, or Black)  Moscow?

So  do not let me confuse you (even more than you are confused now as you read this article) with my statement about “Blue Moscow” guppies??? After researching all Russian ( and only Russian ) tropical fish websites, guppy clubs, forums, blogs, etc. I came to the conclusion that none of the Russian reputable guppy breeders do not call “ Solid – FULLY COLORED –  Blue ” [Triangle/Delta] guppy – MOSCOW BLUE ! Just a couple of beginners in the aquarium hobby have published pictures of guppies that are called the Blue Moscow!

To avoid confusion, in the article (from 1971) ‘ Moscow veiled guppies ‘ by Vasiliev N. Polkanov F. it’s mentioned ‘Moscow Blue’, a guppy with a blue tail but not mentioned a guppy with a blue head!

FROM ARTICLE ; Close to the false Muscovites are the Moscow blue selections of YA Levitsa. This is an excellent breed, which has the widest tails of blue color.

ALL PATTERNS / MARKS ON MUSCOVITES & MOSCOW ARE DESCRIBED IN THE ARTICLE, THEIR POSITION AND COLORS, etc. PERHAPS THEY FORGET TO MENTION BLUE HEAD, SHEEN COLOR WICH COVERING ENTIRE BODY ??? I DON’T THINK SO ( it’s absolutely unnecessary to clarify why )!!!

In one of the coming articles I will post the original images with the original names from one of the best-ever Russian guppy breeders; Vladimir Storozchev . Also, I will republish [for educational purposes] ( original version as well as a translation in English ) 1971 article on the “ Veiled Moscow ” (in English & in Russian ), N. Vasilev and F. Polkanov talk about the true and false Moscow.

My final conclusion is that the first blue-headed guppy appeared in RUSSIA [MOSCOW region (area)] after Vladimir began breeding guppies in artificial conditions using hormone injections.

All the collected data indicate that Vladimir has created a new genotype, (the new gene / supergene ) from which many new varieties were created.

They are not found in nature nether they can be reassembled!

However, since the whole world has accepted the name “Moscow Blue”   for guppies with particular characteristics / color I will continue to use that name in this article.

OK, LET’S TALK ABOUT MODERN SOLID MOSCOW GUPPIES

BLUE , GREEN , PURPLE , BLACK MOSCOW ARE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME !!!

The Blue Moscow is the most common form and it can be a very dark blue because of the black component to the color. The black component  can become so dark as to produce a Black Moscow . * Yes, I got a Black Moscow from Blue  Moscow …

Green Moscow is Blue Moscow with a lot of yellow color cells in the top layer of the skin.

Purple Moscow is Blue Moscow with plentiful red color cells.

That is why Moscow dramatically changes color depending on the lighting. They look one color under natural lighting, another color under artificial lighting, another color with light from above, and another color from direct light from the front.

They could look Blue, even Black, Green or Purple! If you are planning to put them on the show bench, GOOD LUCK!!!

NOTE:     This strain is not fully mature until 10 months of age.

The (modern) Red Moscow ??? guppies

My question about Red Moscow was posed to Dr. Sergey Apriatin; 1.) Is it possible to make Red Moscow Guppy with a “red head” FULL RED MOSCOW ? 2.) History of the origin … when the species originated, who is the creator … ?

Answer from Dr. Sergey Apriatin; 1.) American/European/Asian Full Red and Russian Full Red have a different understanding of these phenotypes. Russian Moscow Full Red has about 70-80% Red color on the body and fins. Your opinion is 95-100% Red color for Full Red strains.

So, Luke Roebuck was correct in his statement; “The definition of Moscow cannot have redhead”. The red color is a pigment chromatophore color. Moscow’s head is defined by Metallic with sometimes irridocyte color which is in all blue green and purple … they are not primary chromatophore color.

Moscow Red is a Red guppy with a Gray Base body color and Moscow super-gene. Moscow supergene has a few different phenotype points (few genes). One of them – a big spot on the front of the body (no red color).

Full Red is Full Red guppy with Blond Base body color (often) or (sometimes) Gray or over variants of Base body colors.

2.) First guppy breeder who receives Moscow Full Scarlet guppy (Full Red guppy with Blond Base body color) was Russian famous guppy breeder Mr. Vyacheslav Kornev.

1970 (Moscow, USSR) – The famous Mr. Kornev received Moscow Full Scarlet guppy from cross-between Red guppy with a small transparent tail and Golden guppy with a big tail.

After that I mean were receive a lot of Full Red strains with different Base body color genotypes and phenotypes.

However, true Black Moscow; have been developed using ‘Triangle/Delta Three-Quarter Black’ guppies.

true Green Moscow ; crossing with “Triangle/Delta  Green” guppies will bias the color to green.

true Purple Moscow ; crossing with “Triangle/Delta Purple” guppies will bias the color to purple.

Mature chromatophores are grouped into subclasses based on their  colour (more properly “hue”) under white light:

• xanthophores ( yellow ),
• erythrophores ( red ),
• iridophores ( reflective / iridescent ),
• leucophores ( white ),
• melanophores ( black/brown ),
• cyanophores ( blue ).
• Super-Gene ; a gen that is responsible for the “complete” coloration of the front body including the head. A supergene is a group of neighboring genes on a chromosome which are inherited together because of close genetic linkage and are functionally related in an evolutionary sense, although they are rarely co-regulated genetically.
