Planning an international road trip? You’ll want to get an international driver’s license ( and possibly rental car insurance ) before you head out; in the United States, it’s officially known as an international driving permit (IDP). Recognized in roughly 150 countries around the world when accompanied by a valid U.S. driver’s license, this passport-size booklet includes your photo, name, and driver information translated into 10 languages. Here’s what you need to do to get an international driving permit.

What should I know before applying for an international driving permit (IDP)?

U.S. State Department–authorized IDPs are only issued by the Automobile Association of America (AAA); fortunately, you don’t have to be a member to get the permit. Until recently, they were also issued by American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA), but that organization has stopped providing the permits.

Prior to applying, look up the license recommendations of the countries you will be visiting (and those of any rental car companies you plan to use). Official U.S. embassy websites and travel.state.gov provide information about related destination-specific requirements and safety tips. Note that some countries, such as China and Ethiopia, don’t recognize international driver’s licenses; instead, they issue their own temporary driving permits for tourists. Others, like Brazil and Uruguay, only recognize a specific type of IDP called an InterAmerican Permit , which is issued by AAA and recommended for travel throughout Latin America.

To apply for an IDP, you must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. resident, and in possession of a U.S. state- or territory-issued driver’s license that’s valid for a minimum of six months beyond the start of your trip. You must also be traveling or planning to travel: U.S. citizens living in other countries as expats cannot use IDPs in their current countries of residence.

These permits are not renewable and are usually valid for up to one year. (In some countries, such as Malaysia, IDPs are only valid for a few months before a driver has to apply for a local driver’s license.)

How can I apply for an IDP?

You can apply for your international driving permit either in person at your nearest AAA office or by mail.

How to apply in person

It’s fast and easy to apply for your international driving permit in person at the nearest AAA office . Call ahead to find out if you’ll need an appointment. Then, simply show up with two passport pictures (or plan to having photos taken at the office, for an additional fee), your valid driver’s license, a completed application , and the $20 permit fee, then leave with your IDP in hand. AAA can postdate your permit up to six months, so make sure to mark your application with the date you want the permit to become effective.

How to apply by mail

You can also apply via mail through AAA. The price is the same $20 and your permit will be mailed to you via standard shipping at no additional cost. You’ll need to enclose the fee, two passport-type photos, the application, and a photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license. You can mail it to the AAA office nearest you.

How to apply from abroad

AAA processes applications mailed in from abroad (though not via fax or email, unfortunately), which is especially good news for folks traveling indefinitely. The permit fee is the same, but the process takes longer than it would stateside. AAA, for one, estimates a four- to six-week turnaround with the included standard shipping, unless you opt for expedited shipping for an additional $75 to $100, which will reduce the time to 10 to 15 days. Send overseas applications to AAA at the address below: AAA/IDP 1000 AAA Drive Heathrow, FL 32746 Attn: Mail Stop #28

Do I really need an IDP?

In countries where these permits are required (such as Japan ), nonresident drivers caught driving without one can face serious fines, legal sanctions, and, in extreme cases, deportation or prison time. But even in destinations where you can do without, this piece of paper with your photo, name, and driver information in multiple languages can go a long way toward facilitating communication. And for $20, it’s a small price to pay to cover your bases.

Do visitors to the United States need an IDP?

International travelers to the United States must carry a valid driver’s license from their home country if they want to operate a motor vehicle during their stay. They should also obtain an international driving permit from the relevant authority in their country of residence. While visiting drivers aren’t obliged by federal law to carry an IDP, some individual states and rental car companies require them.

If you plan on driving while traveling abroad, you should definitely get an International Driving Permit (IDP). In fact, it’s a good idea to get one even if you don't plan to drive when traveling—just in case! It’s a very simple process to get one from AAA in the U.S., and we’ll walk you through the process and answer any IDP questions you may have.

Things You Should Know

  • An IDP is a document that translates your existing U.S.-based driving license into other languages.
  • More than 150 nations accept IDPs, so long as you carry it along with your valid driving license.
  • AAA is the only organization authorized to provide IDPs in the U.S. You can apply by mail or in person at your local AAA office.

It’s an international driving permit, not a driving license.

  • The permit is recognized in more than 150 countries. [2] X Research source This means that, if you have both a valid driving license and a valid IDP, you (under most circumstances) can legally drive in any of those countries.
  • Before traveling to a specific country, contact their embassy or consulate to confirm whether they accept the IDP.

Step 1 Confirm that you’re eligible for an IDP.

  • Your U.S. state/territory/etc. driving license must be valid for at least 6 months after your IDP is issued. If your license will expire during the 6 month period, renew it before applying for the IDP.
  • You must be 18 years old to get an IDP, regardless of the minimum age to get a driving license where you live.

Step 2 Complete the AAA application for an IDP.

  • 2 recent passport style photos , 2 in × 2 in (5.1 cm × 5.1 cm) in size, both signed on the back. You can get passport photos taken at any AAA office for a small fee.
  • Your valid driving license (if applying in person), or a legible photocopy of both the front and back of your license (if applying by mail).
  • The application fee of $20 USD, by check or money order (if applying by mail). You can also pay by cash or credit if you apply in person.

Step 3 Mail your application or take it to AAA in person.

  • You can choose an effective date (starting date) for your IDP up to 6 months ahead, so plan ahead and get this important task done well before your travel date.
  • Attn: Mailstop #28
  • 1000 AAA Drive
  • Heathrow, FL 32746

Step 1 Who offers valid IDPs in the U.S.?

  • The United Nations does not issue IDPs. If you obtained a document purported to be an IDP issued by the U.N., you do not have a valid international driving permit.
  • A real, valid IDP is a multi-page booklet 4 in × 6 in (10 cm × 15 cm) in size, with a gray cover. It includes a page displaying the holder's name, date and place of birth, and home address. This information is repeated in 9 other languages on separate pages.
  • If you have any questions regarding the validity of an IDP, take it to your nearest AAA office.

Step 2 How do I use an IDP while traveling abroad?

  • Individual U.S. states make their own rules, but you generally don’t need an IDP if your current non-U.S. driving license is written in English, [11] X Trustworthy Source State of Michigan Official website for the State of Michigan Go to source or possibly English or Spanish. If you want to drive outside of the U.S., you’ll need an international driving license. To get one, you’ll need to be 18 years old and have a U.S. driver's license that's valid for at least the next 6 months. You should obtain your international license either from the American Automobile Association or the American Automobile Touring Alliance. You can download an application form online and take it to a local office or mail it to the right organization. If you need your license in a hurry, go in person so you don’t have to wait on the mail. How To Get an International Driving Permit & Why You Should Get One

What Is an International Driving Permit?

Reasons to get an idp, how do you get an idp, how long does it take to get an idp, how long is an idp valid for, being prepared to drive in other countries, which u.s. states require an international driving permit for foreign visitors, beware of fakes, final thoughts.

If you’re planning on driving in another country, you’ll need to get familiar with International Driving Permits (or IDPs). They’re inexpensive and easy to obtain — and even work as a form of identification in more than 180 countries worldwide. If you don’t remember to get one before your trip, you might not be allowed to rent a car or drive in other countries, so it’s important to read up on IDPs before you leave.

In this guide, we’ll list out all of the countries that accept an IDP to drive or rent a car, let you know some other reasons it will benefit you to have an IDP, as well as the process you’ll need to go through to obtain one before your next trip.

An IDP is a special license that allows travelers to drive in foreign countries without having to take a written or driving test required to obtain a driver’s license in that country. It’s a standardized card that’s accepted in over 180 countries around the world.

This document shows local authorities and rental car companies in other countries that you’re legally allowed to drive in your home state or country.

AAA International Driving Permit

Hot Tip: Many people and organizations use “International Driver’s Permit” interchangeably to refer to the “International Driving Permit.”

There are a few important reasons why you’ll want to get an IDP:

1. Valid in Most Countries

Each country has its own requirements for foreign visitors who want to drive. Some, like Canada and Mexico, recognize U.S. driver’s licenses, but this isn’t always the case. Most countries around the world don’t recognize U.S. driver’s licenses as a form of identification or ability to drive, but they will recognize an IDP.

Specifically, a valid IDP is recognized in all the countries and states that have ratified the United Nations’ 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. In addition, a number of countries that weren’t a part of the 1949 Convention also recognize the IDP.

These 184 countries include:

* International Driving Permit is honored, but not part of 1949 Convention ** U.S. driver’s license and IDP recognized on presentation to local police and payment of special registration fee upon arrival *** If you plan to drive in Brazil, Uruguay, or Trinidad & Tobago you will need an Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP) issued by AAA

Hot Tip: You’ll still need your passport, passport card, or enhanced license to travel to Canada or Mexico. Your driver’s license isn’t sufficient to cross borders.

2. Reduces Language Barrier

An IDP contains your name, photo, and your driver information translated into 10 different languages. This could help in numerous situations — even instances unrelated to driving or renting a car. If you find yourself in another country and need to provide identification, you might be glad you have your IDP to help make this process smoother.

3. Might Be Needed To Rent a Car

Many major car rental companies internationally might require an IDP to rent a car, depending on local requirements.

For instance, Alamo notes in its FAQs something that anyone driving in the U.S. should consider when weighing whether they need an IDP. It asks: “Will the police officer be able to understand the information on [your] driver’s license? If the answer is no, an International Driver’s Permit is highly recommended.”

This general rule should be applied to rentals in other countries as well. For example, if your license is in English and you’re traveling to a place where English (or other Romance languages) are not the norm, you would want to have an IDP to help bridge the language gap in case you needed to rent a car or got pulled over by local law enforcement.

Bottom Line: You’ll have to check the rental agreement terms for your rental car company and destination to see if an IDP is required or just highly recommended.

IDPs can be issued to anyone 18 years or older who has had a valid driver’s license for 6 months or longer. You must also be a permanent resident of the U.S. or a U.S. territory. It’s also important to remember that you’ll want to apply for an IDP before you leave for your trip, so a bit of advanced planning is required.

There is only 1 organization in the U.S. that issue IDPs: the American Automobile Association (AAA). This means that places like your local DMV don’t offer IDPs.

AAA Travel IDP

You can apply in person at any full-service AAA branch  or by mail. You’ll need:

  • A completed IDP application, which can be picked up at a AAA branch or downloaded here
  • 2 original passport-size photos (with your signature on the back)
  • A check or money order made payable to AAA for $20
  • If desired, include additional U.S. funds for expedited return mail service. AAA refers you to see  USPS , FedEx , or UPS  for rates.
  • A current driver’s license (or a photocopy of both sides if applying by mail)

To apply by mail, send your completed application, fee, and a photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license to your local AAA branch. Otherwise, head to your AAA branch to submit your application in person.

If you’re already overseas, AAA also provides an option for sending your application abroad. But be aware that this process will take 4 to 6 weeks , so it won’t be much help if you have a shorter trip!

Mail all information as well as a street address for delivery to:

AAA/IDP 1000 AAA Drive Heathrow, FL 32746 Attn: Mail Stop #28

Bottom Line: If you’d like to apply for your IDP online, unfortunately, you’re out of luck. Since you need to provide your passport photos, you’ll need to apply in person or mail in your application.

Make sure to plan ahead if you’re planning to drive on your next international trip. While it will only take 5 to 10 minutes to fill out the application for your IDP, the total processing time could take anywhere from a day (if you go to a AAA location in-person) up to 2 weeks if you mail your application in and opt for a standard shipping option.

IDPs typically remain valid for 1 year or through the expiration of your existing state driving license.

You must apply for a new IDP every year. Every time a new IDP is required, you will have to go through the same application process we’ve noted above.

Before you travel and make plans to drive, it makes sense to do a bit of research on the specific requirements of your destination.

As we noted above, always make sure to carry your valid U.S. driver’s license when driving internationally as your IDP is invalid without your driver’s license to accompany it . IDPs only act as a translation of domestically-accepted licenses and do not by themselves allow those without government-issued driver’s licenses to drive abroad.

In reality, you’ll rarely be asked to provide your IDP, but this doesn’t mean it’s not worth obtaining. In countries that require and ask you to provide it, the penalties are serious should you drive without one. In Japan, for instance, there are a few extreme cases of being arrested for driving without an IDP.

Even with an IDP, you should still review the driving requirements and laws for the countries you’ll be driving in on your vacation. This includes familiarizing yourself with things like street signs, driving directions, alcohol consumption rules, speed limits, and more. You’ll also always need to abide by local driving laws, of course.

While the U.S. government doesn’t require foreign visitors to have an IDP, many U.S. states have laws that do require an IDP in certain instances. This means that foreign visitors trying to drive or rent a car in the U.S. need to be aware of these requirements based on their destination.

These U.S. states include:

Hot Tip: IDPs must be issued in the same country as the driver’s license of the traveler. For example, if someone from Spain has a Spanish driver’s license, their IDP must also be issued in Spain. AAA does not issue IDPs for those that carry a foreign driver’s license.

Be aware of websites that offer you an “International Driver’s License.” While some people use the term International Driver’s License interchangeably with an International Driving Permit, there isn’t actually a document called an International Driver’s License.

Some websites will try to sell you this so-called International Driver’s License, but, unfortunately, this is a useless document that won’t work internationally. Foreign officials are familiar with IDPs and will immediately be able to sniff out a fake document.

This goes hand in hand with our other piece of advice — don’t obtain an International Driving Permit from any organization other than AAA.

An International Driving Permit is accepted in over 180 countries worldwide and is cheap and easy to obtain. When you know you’ll be renting a car in another country during your travels, an IDP is a useful document to get before you leave.

While you won’t always be asked to provide your IDP in order to rent a car, you’ll definitely want to have one if you get pulled over or you’re asked to provide identification. Finally, remember there is only 1 legitimate places to obtain an IDP in the U.S. — AAA. Make sure you head to a local office or mail in your application before you leave for your next trip!

How (and Why) to Get an International Driving Permit from AAA

Updated : August 04, 2023

AAA Travel Editors

Planning to drive overseas? Consider getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) from AAA beforehand.

Why & when you might need one

Here are the 3 main reasons to carry an International Driving Permit:

  • It’s valid in most countries. Some countries don’t recognize U.S. driver’s licenses, but do recognize IDPs.
  • It can reduce language barriers. An IDP will show your name and driver information translated in 10 languages.

Each country has its own requirements for foreign visitors who want to drive. Some, like Canada, recognize U.S. driver’s licenses. Others require an IDP, and a few require separate documents.

That’s why AAA recommends bringing an IDP along with your U.S. driver’s license to help avoid many potential hassles, especially if you’re traveling in a country where English is not the primary language. Even if an IDP isn’t required, you may encounter traffic police or other officials who can’t read your U.S. license but can read one of the IDP’s 10 other languages. Not sure what the rules are where you’ll be traveling? Do Americans need an IDP in Canada or Mexico?

Nope! U.S. driver’s licenses are considered valid by Canada and Mexico for visitors on short-term tourist trips. (You’ll still need your passport to enter either country, whether or not you’re driving. Learn how to apply for or renew your passport.)

U.S. auto insurance is also valid in Canada as long as you’re only visiting, but if you are driving your own vehicle into Mexico, you will need to buy Mexico liability auto insurance. The U.S. liability insurance you already have is invalid in Mexico.

Do You Need a Special License to Drive an RV?

If you find yourself asking, “Do I need a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to drive an RV?”, you’ve come to the right place. Whether or not you need a special RV license is a pretty common question when it comes to renting an RV .

RV license requirements vary widely. For example, for Cruise America , the RVs you’ll be renting will be C Class or Truck Campers. To drive a Cruise C Class RV, you must possess a valid driver’s license — temporary licenses are not valid — and a major credit card. In addition, all drivers must be at least 21 years old and sign a Rental Agreement before the RV is rented.

There are plenty of other RV license requirements to know about, such as the type of RV you’re driving and what state you’re traveling in.

So, to answer the question, “Do I need a CDL to drive an RV?”, we broke down the requirements for certain classes of RVs and various state requirements below.

What Are the RV Class Types?

Before we discuss the different types of special licenses you may need to operate your RV, let’s quickly review the types of RV class types. The primary types we’ll cover today include:

  • Class A. These vehicles can be anywhere from 30-40 feet long and are often equipped with all the amenities you’ll need to camp in style. Class A RVs are best suited for those planning a longer road trip.
  • Class B. Class B RVs are a bit smaller and more closely resemble a van. The smaller size makes them easier to operate, but they also provide slightly fewer amenities compared to a Class A.
  • Class C. A Class C RV is a slightly shorter version of Class A. These vehicles are a bit easier to drive but offer just slightly fewer amenities. However, you’ll still receive many of the same luxuries found in Class A.

With this information in mind, it’s time to cover what type of RV will require a CDL or other specialized license.

Do You Need a CDL To Drive an RV? RV License Requirements

When it comes to answering, “Do I need a CDL to drive an RV?”, there’s no one right answer. RV license requirements truly depend on the type of vehicle and the state you are driving it in. We’ll cover a few different scenarios to help you better understand what type of CDL or special license you need to abide by the law.

What Types of Special Licenses Are Available?

Before we dive into what type of special license you may need to operate your RV, let’s first cover what types of licenses are even available.

  • R Registration. You won’t see this type of license required in many states aside from New York. This license is required in the Empire State for recreational vehicles that weigh over 26,000 pounds. Check with the state’s DMV to determine whether this license is needed.
  • Commercial. CDLs are not often required to operate an RV, but it’s best to verify this information with the state’s DMV. If you are renting an RV from Cruise America, you won’t need to worry about obtaining this type of license!
  • Non-Commercial. There are different types of non-commercial licenses that may be required in some states. For example, a Class B license is a non-commercial license needed in California to operate certain types of RVs. Before you begin your Cali road trip , make sure you have the proper license for your chosen RV.

Without further ado, it’s time to determine what kind of licensing you’ll need for your fun-filled RV vacation !

You Don’t Need a Special License With Cruise America

First and foremost, we’re going to cover the type of RV that Cruise America offers: the Class C motorhome! Because Cruise America’s Class C RVs are easy to drive and operate, this class of RVs is the best choice for family road trips .

These RVs are best known for having a cab-over design, where part of the RV is directly above the driver’s seat in these RVs.

You’ll be happy to learn that Cruise America rents both Class C motorhomes and truck campers, which do not require a special driver’s license. As mentioned before, you only need one driver that is 21 years or older and has a valid driver’s license and credit card. This is due to their easy operation, lower weight, and shorter length.

Plus, when renting with Cruise, insurance is provided to you free of charge! Since the nightly rates for this can get pretty costly elsewhere, this benefit is a big advantage when planning your RV trip budget .

Other Motorhome Classes

You might be surprised to learn there are several classes of motorhomes out there besides Class C! When looking at RVs in general, you will discover there are classes A and B motorhomes in addition to Class C. The major difference between each class is the size and weight of the RV.

Class A motorhomes are recognizable for their distinct bus features. In other words, class A motorhomes tend to be pretty big!

Class B motorhomes tend to resemble your typical van — with the added benefits of a motorhome, of course! Depending on who makes this class of motorhome, the body of the vehicle can vary.

These types of motorhomes may require special licensing to operate. For these larger vehicles, it’s best to review state requirements before hitting the road. Now that you know a bit more about motorhome classes, we can dive into said license requirements.

RV License Requirements by State

While Cruise America won’t require any special licenses from you to drive an RV, it doesn’t hurt to know about various other license requirements out there!

By and large, most states with RV license requirements ask for two types of special licenses: a commercial or a non-commercial license.

These licenses are required if you’re driving a vehicle over a certain length or weight. However, it is always a good idea to check if your state has any special requirements for driving any RV.

Below, we’ve listed some states that require either a commercial or non-commercial driver’s license for driving an RV:

  • Arkansas: Depending on the vehicle class, weight, and contents inside the vehicle, Arkansas requires a commercial driver’s license or CDL.
  • California: California has various non-commercial licenses depending on the vehicle class, as well as how much you’re towing.
  • Hawaii: Hawaii has class A, B, and C CDL requirements that vary depending on the gross vehicle weight rating.
  • Kansas: If you plan on driving a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight above 26,001 pounds, then Kansas requires you to get a CDL.
  • Maryland: In Maryland , a non-commercial class C license is required for motor vehicles that weigh under 26,001 pounds.
  • New Mexico: New Mexico has class A, B, and C CDL requirements depending on the gross vehicle weight and how much is being towed.
  • Nevada: The state of Nevada requires a CDL for a driver of any vehicle weighing more than 26,001 pounds and/or is designed to carry 16 passengers, including the driver.

Some states may have certain CDL requirements, but there are also states where these requirements don’t apply. For example, states like Connecticut have license exemptions for certain recreational vehicles.

An important thing to remember is that these requirements can change from year to year. So, the requirements that were valid one year may be changed the next year.

In the end, make sure you check with your state’s DMV to make sure you know the up-to-date requirements for RV licenses before hitting the road. And, don’t forget, with Cruise America, you just need one driver with a valid license and major credit card when renting your dream RV!

How (& why) to get an International Driving Permit from AAA

Italian car parked on a city street

By AAA staff

January 22, 2019

Planning to drive overseas? Consider getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) from AAA beforehand.

You might hear them referred to as an "international driver's license" or "international permit." They’re inexpensive, easy to obtain through AAA, and honored as a form of identification in more than 150 countries worldwide. The permit contains your name, photo, and driver information translated into 10 languages.

Why & when you might need one

The 3 main reasons to carry an International Driving Permit:

It's valid in most countries

Some countries don't recognize U.S. driver's licenses, but do recognize IDPs.

It can reduce language barriers

An IDP will show your name and driver information translated in 10 languages.

It might be needed to rent a car

Some countries require an IDP in order for visitors to rent a vehicle.

Each country has its own requirements for foreign visitors who want to drive. Some, like Canada, recognize U.S. driver's licenses. Others require an IDP, and a few require separate documents.

That's why AAA recommends bringing an IDP along with your U.S. driver's license to help avoid many potential hassles, especially if you're traveling in a country where English is not the primary language.  Even if an IDP isn't required, you may encounter traffic police or other officials who can't read your U.S. license but can read one of the IDP's 10 other languages.

Not sure what the rules are where you'll be traveling? Ask your  AAA Travel Advisor  at a  branch  in person or over the phone.

Do Americans need an IDP in Canada or Mexico?

Nope! U.S. driver's licenses are considered valid by Canada and Mexico for visitors on short-term tourist trips. (You'll still need your passport to enter either country, whether or not you're driving. Learn how to apply for or renew your passport. )

U.S. auto insurance is also valid in Canada as long as you're only visiting, but  if you are driving your own vehicle into Mexico, you will need to buy Mexico liability auto insurance.  The U.S. liability insurance you already have is invalid in Mexico.  Learn more about Mexico auto insurance.

How to get an IDP

AAA is 1 of only 2 organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue International Driving Permits in the United States. AAA issues IDPs to the public; you don't need to be a member to get an IDP from AAA.

You can apply for an IDP from  any full-service AAA branch  in person or by mail. You'll need:

  • A completed IDP application. Pick one up at a AAA branch or  download and print one
  • 2 original passport-size photos with your signature on the back ( need photos? )
  • A check or money order for the $20 application fee, plus tax where applicable
  • A current driver's license from your home state or U.S. territory (or a photocopy of both sides if applying by mail)

To apply by mail, send your completed application, fee, and a photocopy of both sides of your driver's license to  any full-service AAA branch . Allow 10 days for delivery.

  • IDPs are valid for 1 year and aren't renewable.

How To Get An International Driver's License

Your flight finally lands and, after months of saving and planning, your long-awaited road trip across Europe is about to begin. All that’s left to do now is find the rental office and pick up a car. Then, just before the agent hands over the keys, you hear these seven words: “Can I see your international driving permit?”

If you're already on your trip, you're likely out of luck when it comes to an international driving permit—it's recommended or required for foreign drivers by more than 150 countries , after all. But with a little pre-planning, your road trip can be seamless with the $20 permit tucked in your wallet. Read on below for our recommendations for when and how to pick up an international driving permit before your asphalt adventure.

What is an international driving permit?

First things first, it's not technically a driver's license—you'll already need one of those from your country or state of origin to accompany your international driving permit. The permit, a small, passport-like booklet issued by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance, gives visitors the right to drive a car in any of the countries that accept it. The permit translates your American driver’s license into ten languages, including Arabic and Portuguese. That means a lot less back-and-forth on the back roads of Morocco when the officer has never seen a Nevada driver’s license before.

Check the State Department’s site for specific license requirements for the country you’re visiting. The most important thing is to check the requirements long before you leave, so as not to be stranded when you learn that you need a document that you don't have. These can't be issued on the spot outside of the U.S.

An international driving permit isn't required where I'm going. Do I still need one?

If you're traveling to a country that doesn't speak your language, you should get one anyway for the peace of mind, according to Bryan Shilling, AAA's managing director of travel products and services. “The real value of it isn’t so much from a legal standpoint," says Shilling. "It’s really in case something were to happen—you’re pulled over for a driving infraction, or there’s an accident, or something goes awry. If you don’t have an international driving permit, [the police] may not be able to communicate effectively with you."

What happens if I drive without one?

Let’s say you’re pulled over and caught sans permit. Whether that’ll be a vacation ender or not depends on the country you’re in and the local laws. The penalties in Japan , for example, are severe: You could be arrested or even deported if you don’t have the necessary paperwork.

How do I get an international driving permit?

Start by filling out an application ( print it here ) and make sure you have two passport-sized photos. Then, find your nearest AAA branch office (the AATA only take applications by mail) and bring those materials, along with your driver’s license and $20, to the most convenient location. There's no need to make an appointment, and as long as your documents are in good shape, you'll receive your international driving permit within minutes on the spot.

If you're out of the country indefinitely, you can also apply to the AAA by mail, like the AATA , but expect it to take up to six weeks to process. Plus, you'll need to include between $75 and $100 extra to cover shipping costs. Check each organization's website if you're registering from abroad for more info.

How long is an international driving permit valid?

The permit is valid for just 12 months from the date of issue, so be sure to keep track of when yours is about to expire.

Okay, I received mine. What next?

Let your hair down. You’re ready at last to embark on a convertible drive across the pond .

International Drivers Permit Information for the USA

cruise america international drivers license

Daniel A. Leifheit / Getty Images

It's not only American drivers that need to consider International Drivers Permits (sometimes called International Driving Licenses.) These permits should also be considered for international travelers coming to the United States . Travelers coming from another country to the United States, whether visiting for business or personal use, are encouraged to learn whether they should get an International Drivers Permit or not.

Driving in the U.S.

An International Drivers Permit needs to be used in conjunction with a valid license from the driver's home country. It provides a translation of the existing driver's license into different languages and provides some identifying information, such as a photo, address, birth date, and more. The United States does not issue IDPs to foreign travelers, so it is important to obtain one before arriving in the United States.

When Visitors Need an IDP

Foreigner visitors  may need an IDP to drive in the United States . For example, in January 2013, Florida required foreigners to carry an International Driving Permit with their national driving license. Even in situations when it is not needed, it can certainly be helpful to have. This may include cases when it will simplify identification, such as when a traveler is pulled over by a law enforcement officer. The motor vehicle department of the country that is issued on the visitor's driver's license must issue the IDP. The United States is not responsible for issuing them to foreign visitors.

Additionally, renting a car may require a license and an IDP, as it depends on each rental car company's policy. In preparation, it is recommended to ask about the policy and other details before traveling.

Obtaining a U.S. Drivers License

Travelers staying for a longer time in the United States may wish to apply for a driver's license from the state they're residing in, however, travelers should note that it can take several weeks or months to complete the process. Residents must apply at their state's department of motor vehicles in order to review the requirements for obtaining a U.S. driver's license. These details vary by each state, as do the driving laws.

Travelers should make sure to check out each state's requirements for drivers licenses before applying. They will also want to verify residency requirements. A driver's license from one state allows travelers to drive in all other states.

Travelers interested in International Drivers Permits should be aware of potential scams and outlets selling them for inflated prices. For more information, travelers should review an overview of International Drivers Permits scams . This may include fake IDP's which can lead to legal problems and travel delays. There are also ads and storefronts that market documents that are not real, and thus worthless. Residents and visitors caught with fake IDPs are likely to face serious charges, especially if they have no proof of identity. Those scammed must report the fraud to the Federal Trade Commission immediately.

Moscow metro to train first female drivers

RTL

A Moscow city hall statement said "expectations are very high" of female drivers in training, and noted that women had already driven metro trains during World War II / © AFP/File

The Moscow subway system will train women to run trains next year, following labour law changes that opens up several professions to them.

The sprawling metro system, built in the Soviet era as a Communist showpiece, has "formed the first group of female driver trainees" who are to begin training in February, the Moscow city hall said in a statement.

Metro drivers have historically been men because the activity has been on the government's list of jobs deemed harmful for women's health.

The justification that it is dangerous to be underground for long periods has been criticised as hypocritical however, because the metro employs women as cleaners, cashiers and escalator monitors who earn much smaller salaries while also being stuck underground.

In September, a Labour Ministry decree slashed the number of exclusively male professions from 456 to around 100.

The current list was approved in 2000 and bans women from mining and metalworking jobs, but also from positions as a bus driver, sailor, parachutist, auto mechanic, and even maker of wind instruments.

A new list that is to take effect in 2021 opens many of these to females.

The city hall statement said "expectations are very high" of female drivers in training, and noted that women had already driven metro trains during World War II, when they took on many traditionally male jobs.

Russian Railways, the country's railway monopoly, said it will also begin employing female train drivers in 2021.
