Some of the best Champagne towns you can visit by train

  • Janine Marsh
  • Champagne-Ardenne

Autumn leaves growing around a blue and white street sign for Rue Dom Perignon, Epernay, Champagne

Seeing the best of Champagne by train is a fun and easy journey. Reims, the capital of Champagne the region, is just 45 minutes by train from Paris. Epernay, known as the capital of Champagne the drink, takes around an hour and a quarter. The two great Champagne towns are linked by rail and it takes around half an hour to get from one to the other. Not only that, en route are several other famous and fabulous Champagne producing towns, all connected by rail. If you want to taste before you buy, taking the train is a great way to visit, stay safe and on the right side of the law.

Ligne des Bulles, the Bubbles Line

champagne tour with train

The TER (regional train) line between Epernay and Reims is called by some locals: Ligne des Bulles, the Line of the Bubbles. It makes stops at several villages in the woodlands and vineyards of the area, a great way to get to see some of the small Champagne towns and meet producers at their vineyards. Here are three of the best:

Rilly-la-Montagne

champagne tour with train

This charming village, one of the oldest in the area; here history and tradition are closely entwined. At the town hall pick up a copy of a walking guide of the town and vineyards. Don’t miss the 12th century church with its carved choir stall illustrating the stages of wine production. There are about 60 Champagne producers in the town and several offer cellar tours and tastings. Stop off for a special lunch at the splendid Chateau de Rilly, full on glamour amongst the vineyards.

champagne tour with train

The town’s motto is “the city that sparkles” and it’s a lively sort of place. It’s said that King Henri IV of France loved the wines from here and owned his own wine press in Ay. Apparently, it was kept in the half-timbered house behind St Brice’s Church. Ay was already well-known in the Gallo Roman period for the wines produced here. Around 40 producers are based in Ay including Bolinger, and several offer cellar tours and tastings. Pop to the town hall to pick up a leaflet about the town (in English). There are several restaurants, mainly bistro style.

Avenay-Val-d’Or

Just 7km from Epernay is sleepy and tranquil. There’s a 13th-16th century church and several Champagne houses to visit. From here it’s about a 20-minute walk to the tiny village of Mutigny from where you will get a wonderful view of the Montagne of Reims.

Hautvillers

Not on the Champagne line but a short cycle ride from Epernay where you can hire bikes at the tourist office. It’s the birthplace of champagne and well worth the detour!

The Champagne region is located in the northeastern corner of France, just 90km from Paris. Aside from being world-renowned for its sparkling wine that bears its name, this region boasts beautiful historical sites and heritage. Explore rolling vineyards, celebrated Champagne houses and stunning architecture on this Champagne day trip from Paris.

You can visit this varied region all year round, but the best time to visit is from May-September. This is when the vines are still full of grapes, and the smaller wineries are still offering tours and tastings.

The autumn paints the rolling hills in beautiful shades of deep orange and red but remember, this is the busy harvest season, so many of the winemakers pause their guided tours to gather in the grapes.

How to Get from Paris to Champagne

By organised tour.

Taking an organised Champagne tour from Paris is an excellent way to discover the region. No additional planning is needed. These tours whisk you away across the French countryside to experience a fully comprehensive trip to Champagne.

This full-day tour takes you on a Reims day trip from Paris directly from your hotel, lets you try four different varieties of Champagne and enjoy a multi-course gourmet lunch.

If you’d rather visit Epernay then this full-day tour from Paris includes a walk along the Avenue de Champagne, an expert-led masterclass with a wine expert guide and lets you sample 8 different types of Champagne.

You can also book a private tour if you’re travelling in a larger group.

Champagne Region of France

Taking a self-guided Champagne tour from Paris is made simple by the efficient and affordable trains available throughout the day.

Direct, high-speed trains run from Paris Gare de l’Est train station to the gateway of the Champagne region, Gare de Reims station in Reims. Around 10 trains travel this route on the average weekday, and the journey itself takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the train service.

You can buy your tickets at the station on the day, but during the high season or national holidays, booking in advance is advisable to ensure you get your preferred train. You can view schedules and book here .

We end this day in Epernay, connected to Paris by another high-speed TGV train. This journey takes 1.5 hours, so try to grab a window seat to enjoy watching the golden sunset over the sprawling vineyards fly past as you return to Paris.

If you have decided to hire a car during your stay, you can reach Reims from Paris in just 1.5 hours. There are several route options available, so make sure you have a GPS divide or a trustworthy map-reading passenger along for the ride.

The traffic in Paris can get very heavy, so try to avoid rush hour. Leave early for your trip to Champagne from Paris before the rush, around 7 am or treat yourself to a lie-in and leave a little later at 10 am.

France’s motorways tend to have tolls, so bear this in mind if you want to take the fast road. Of course, you can opt to avoid the tolls completely and follow the minor roads through the charming French villages, but this will add another hour to your journey.

There are several car parks dotted around Reims and Epernay. The central locations cost around €1.50 per hour, but if you park further out of the city centre and walk in, you can often find free street parking.

The downside to driving into the Champagne region is that the driver will not be able to participate in the Champagne tastings – similar to if you’re driving during our Loire Valley itinerary . So whether you have a hire car or not, consider taking the train or an organised tour if you want to get involved and sample the Champagne as part of the cellar tours. You can browse hire car options here .

Champagne Day Trip Itinerary

There is plenty to see and do in the Champagne region, from tasting houses to historical cathedrals.

We start in Reims, the capital of the region, and end in the charming town of Epernay, home to one of the most famous streets in the world, the Avenue de Champagne. You can easily explore the best of the region in just one day, making it the perfect day out from Paris.

Notre Dame de Reims

Whether you are arriving by train or by car, Reims is the perfect place to start your day. With a rich history dating back to Roman times, this charming town is known for its cultural heritage, gothic architecture and, of course, its famous Champagne houses.

The first stop on our Champagne region day trip is the Notre Dame de Reims cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the coronation site of the Kings of France.

This Gothic masterpiece is truly breathtaking, with stunning stained glass windows and intricate carvings. Built in the 13th century, this cathedral is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of France. You can organise a guided tour here .

Notre Dame de Reims

Musée de la Reddition

If you are a history enthusiast, this one is for you. Reims is home to the Musée de la Reddition (Museum of Surrender). It is by no means a spectacular building but the historical significance placed on this one room makes it a must-visit destination in Reims.

Here, in the early hours of Monday, May 7, 1945, three senior officers from the German armed forces signed an unconditional surrender agreement, effectively ending World War II in Europe. The museum is home to documents, artefacts, press releases and the original war maps placed on the walls.

Although you may not find this museum in every guide to visiting Reims, it is a pivotal location for our world history and is well worth visiting.

Champagne Tasting in Reims

Reims is the capital of the Champagne wine region, home to 155 miles of cellars under the city streets. Our next stop is, of course, a Champagne tasting.

There are several world-renowned Champagne houses offering cellar tours and tastings across the town. You may have a personal favourite you would like to visit, but here are our top 3.

Tattinger – Taittinger is a family-owned Champagne house with over 280 hectares of vineyards in the region. You can tour the cellars and learn about the Champagne-making process, as well as taste some of their world-famous wines.

Veuve Clicquot – Veuve Clicquot is one of the most iconic Champagne houses in the world, known for its distinctive yellow label. You can take a tour of the cellars with a knowledgeable guide and learn about the history of the house, as well as sample some of their delicious Champagne.

Pommery – Pommery is another family-owned Champagne house with a rich history and a reputation for producing high-quality Champagne. The cellars at Pommery are particularly impressive, with a maze of underground tunnels that you can explore. The house also hosts art exhibitions throughout the year, making it a unique and exciting place to visit.

Vineyards in Reims

Lunch in Reims

After sampling some of the region’s finest Champagne, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite. Reims is home to some excellent cafes and restaurants offering classic French cuisine.

If you are hoping to match the luxurious Champagne with top-end cuisine, Le Jardin Les Crayères is the restaurant for you. This Michelin-starred restaurant is located in a beautiful 19th-century mansion and offers an elegant and refined dining experience. The menu features classic French dishes with a modern twist, using local and seasonal ingredients.

For a more budget-friendly option, visit Brasserie du Boulingrin. This traditional brasserie is located in the heart of Reims and serves up classic French dishes in a lively and bustling atmosphere. The menu includes favourites like steak frites, escargot, and onion soup.

If you prefer to pack a picnic, you can enjoy your lunch in the Parc de la Patte d’Oie, a beautiful park that features a lake, walking paths, and picnic areas.

Explore Epernay

After lunch, it’s time to head on to our next stop, Epernay. A must-visit destination for Champagne lovers and history enthusiasts alike, this charming town is home to some of the world’s most famous Champagne producers, including Dom Perignon, Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, and Mercier.

The smaller town of the two, Epernay has a higher concentration of Champagne houses and a certain small-town charm.

Getting from Reims to Epernay is quick and easy, thanks to the efficient local trains that run between the two towns. The trains run every hour or so from the Gare de Reims and take just 35 minutes.

Our first stop in Epernay is the Avenue de Champagne. A grand and elegant street located in the heart of Epernay, known for its beautiful mansions and prestigious Champagne houses.

Take a stroll down the tree-lined avenue to soak in the atmosphere. During the summer months, the trees blossom with beautiful white flowers, which add to the grandeur.

Before heading into one of the Champagne houses to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, take a tour around the Musée du vin de Champagne et d’Archéologie régionale.

Housed in the breathtaking 19th century Château Perrier, once home to Champagne merchants, it makes the perfect location to learn more about the region’s wines and architecture.

The museum offers a fully immersive discovery of the ingredients that go into Champagne alongside the historical heritage. The gardens towards the rear are beautifully kept and provide a relaxing break.

Entry includes an audio tour and access to the gardens. You can also enter the gardens for free without entry to the museum if you want to just take a quick stroll away from the hustle and bustle.

Epernay

Champagne Tasting in Epernay

As the afternoon sun beats down on the Champagne houses, it’s time to enjoy another round of sampling. Discover some of the 68 miles of cellars located below the streets of Epernay.

Epernay is home to some of the world’s most famous Champagne houses. Each one offers cellar tours and tastings year-round. There are many incredible varieties of Champagne on offer, from the large, iconic houses to the smaller boutique family-run establishments. Whatever your taste, you may already have a favourite in mind, but here are our top 3.

Moët & Chandon – Moët & Chandon is perhaps one of the most famous Champagne houses in the world. They offer a fantastic cellar tour that takes you through their vast network of underground cellars. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the historic cellars where Napoleon Bonaparte stored his personal collection of Champagne.

Mercier – Mercier, one of the largest Champagne houses in the region, offers a truly unique and immersive cellar tour experience. You can even ride a small train through the vast network of underground cellars.

Perrier-Jouët – Perrier-Jouët is known for its elegant and delicate Champagnes. The tour includes a visit to the famous “Crayères” cellars, which are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you would prefer to spend the afternoon outdoors, head out of town to discover the vineyards sprawled across the picturesque rolling hills. You can hire regular or electric bikes to cycle through the country lanes, stopping off at vineyards to sample a glass or purchase a bottle along the way.

There are also several short walks that rise up behind the town to the west. Navigate the narrow lanes and meandering footpaths between the vines whilst enjoying the far-reaching views across the town and beyond. This is simply one of the best things to do on a day trip to Champagne from Paris.

Hi. Is there a tour company that does what you listed in the day itinerary section? I am interested in going to Veuve, Moet and Avenue de Champagne. I looked at the 2 tours you linked but it didn’t seem these 3 things were guaranteed. Thanks!

Hi Ashley, many of the groups tours unfortunately don’t guarantee which champagne houses you’ll visit. If you want to visit specific places then you might need to book a private tour such as this full-day tour or this full-day tour if you don’t want to travel independently.

8 Top Champagne Houses in Reims, France

Wine lovers visiting Paris often choose to take a day trip to Reims for Champagne tasting. Getting there via train from Paris is actually very easy and quick. Then you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy the bubbles at a few of the top Champagne houses in Reims.

Reims is the center of the Champagne world in France. You can visit world-famous estates in Reims and Epernay , such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger, or check out the smaller Champagne houses you may not have heard of.

veuve clicquot1

All you’ll need are a few advanced appointments, your walking shoes (or a quick Uber ride), and enough time to do it justice.

Below you’ll find all you need to know about setting up and enjoying Champagne tours and tasting in Reims.

How to Visit the Champagne Region

The best way to discover the region is by driving The Champagne Trail, which covers over 250 miles that wind through rolling hills, along vineyard covered valleys and past quaint little villages. All along the way you can stop to visit the growers and winemakers, to taste Champagne, and to learn as much as you like about the tradition.

There are two main cities in the Champagne region to visit, and the Champagne trail will take you between the two within just a 30 minute drive. In Reims, you can visit world-famous Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger.

Champagne region in France

In Epernay, you can spend some time walking along the Avenue de Champagne, popping in at tasting rooms along the way. The easiest way to get to the Champagne region is by car from Paris. If you’re already visiting, you can rent a car in Paris and take a day or overnight trip to Champagne.

You can take the train from Paris to Reims, but it’s not very easy to get around to the Champagne houses without a car, and you’ll definitely need a car to visit the countryside or to go into Epernay. Below you’ll find all you need to know to plan a road trip in the Champagne region, for wine tours and tasting.

Self-Guided or Group/Private Wine Tour

The first consideration you’ll probably be making is whether you want to do a self-guided or a group/private guided wine tour. If you don’t have a designated driver, or don’t wish to spit the wine instead of drinking it, you will need to take a tour or hire a driver.

There are many to choose from. You can go on a group tour, which are plentiful, often including up to 10 people and are on a pre-planned route that you can’t decide on. Tours typically go to great wineries and there’s a lot of information given, many include lunch – plus you don’t have to take care of a single detail.

Below are two group tours we recommend:

  • Small Group Full Day Tour – Your go to three different Champagne houses, where you’ll try a variety of champagnes. There’s also an included three-course lunch along the way. (8 hours)  BOOK HERE
  • Reims Afternoon Tour to Epernay – Visit the UNESCO-listed Champagne Avenue in Epernay, the historic village of Hautvillers, and visit two Champagne houses for tastings. (4.5 hours)  BOOK HERE

Private Tour

If you don’t want to go along with a bunch of other people and you’d like to have some say in the schedule, then a private tour is the way to go. Here are two that we recommend (in case there’s not a lot of availability).

What’s Included:

  • First Visit – Explanation of the manufacturing process plus cave visit followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes.
  • Visit Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon created Champagne.
  • 3-Course Restaurant Lunch
  • 2nd & 3rd Visits – A Grand Cru cellar and cave followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes at each

Tour is 8 hours, 2 people minimum. $375/pp

What’s included:

  • Return transport from Reims in a private shuttle (Mercedes Class V).
  • English-speaking driver/guide, Champagne expert
  • Visit & tasting at 2 Champagne houses
  • Guided tour of Reims Cathedral
  • Lunch reservation (payment not included)

Tour is 7 hours, 2 people minimum $599/pp

Self-Guided Tour

I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called  Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

The House Mumm started in 1827 in the historic birthplace of the Champagne, Reims. This almost bicentenary estate opens the doors of its cellars where about 25 million bottles rest peacefully in the cellars.

The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. They were originally wine merchants based in Cologne, Germany, but expanded into France when they saw potential for the region and expansion of their business. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today Mumm is spread across nearly 25 kilometers in the heart of Reims. Visitors can explore the long history of this cellar and learn about the process they’ve followed for centuries.

There are three visit types: The Cordon Rouge Mumm experience, the discovery experience, and the 100% Grand Cru experience. The visit will end at one of the most beautiful museum about champagne. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to taste their Champagnes.

Champagne Charles de Cazanove has been in business since 1811, and its production is 3 million bottles per year. It can be quite interesting visiting a large house like this to learn the Champagne making process. The facility was built in 2019, so it’s very modern.

Location: 1 Place des Droits de l’Homme, 51100 Reims, France Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm Phone:  +33 (0)3 26 89 53 90 Email: [email protected]

You’ve likely already heard of this Champagne brand, as it’s one of the most popular Champagnes being sold around the world. In case you’re thinking that means it’s not worth a visit to this Champagne house because it will be too touristy, we don’t think that’s an issue.

In fact, this was one of our favorite Champagne tours in Reims. The underground cellars of Veuve Clicquot might be one of the main reasons we love it here so much. The cellars are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

That’s not surprising when you learn that they’ve been making wine since 1772. In 1909, they bought these old underground quarrys to store their wine. There is some fascinating history in these caves, which you’ll learn all about during the tour.

After the tour of the cellar and facilities, you’ll have a chance to try the Champagne. There are a few different tickets you can purchase. Click here to see them all.

  • Discovery Tour – 26€:  45min tour followed by a single tasting of Yellow Label Brut 26€. This tour is available Tuesday to Saturday.

  • Veuve Clicquot & Rose Champagne – 40€: In 1818, Madame Clicquot was the first to make a rose champagne blend, which changed the landscape of Champagne for ever. Learn all about the Rose on this 45 min tour, followed by a tasting.

Other Champagne Houses Nearby

Not too far away from Reims, there are many more opportunities for Champagne tasting. If you’re going to be in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by a few of these:

Pressoria is the brand new sensory interpretation center for champagne wines. Housed in the walls of a former Pommery pressing center in the commune of Aÿ, the immersive tour of this emblematic cultural site will help you rediscover champagne through your five senses.

Villa Signolle

A family-run business since 1802, they offer specialist champagnes for experts and amateurs alike. They do the harvesting, handling and winemaking of all their own grapes, from one of the best terroirs in the Champagne region. Their villa is on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can taste on their terrace or in the lounge, inside a house listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Champagne Le Gallais

In 1927, Hachod Fringhian, the grandfather of Charlotte Morgain Le Gallais, obtained the Clos du Château de Boursault, which had long belonged to Madame Veuve Clicquot. Five generations later, Charlotte runs part of the estate: 7 parcels with their own characteristics, in the family vineyard, overlooking the Marne valley. The press, the cellars and the wine storehouses are also located in the clos, which guarantees a great freshness of the fruit at the time of its pressing and transformation.

How to Get from Paris to Reims

You can get to Reims from Paris by taking the TGV train. From anywhere in Paris, just get yourself to the East Railway Station. You can take the Paris subway to arrive at this station. This makes it very easy to visit Reims, no matter where in Europe you’re arriving from.

You don’t have to have tickets for the train in advance, but during busy times we do recommend buying them in advance to make sure you can get a seat. There have been times that the train has been full and we’ve had to take the next one. You can purchase tickets in advance on Trainline.com .

The train journey to Reims is only about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Epernay – another of the nearby major Champagne cities – you can continue on from Reims on the TER train, which departs every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to get there.

Descending into the Veuve Clicquot Chalk Caves

How to Get Around in Reims

One of the big questions that is often asked by tourists coming to Reims on a day trip from Paris is how to get around to the Champagne house. There are three convenient ways to get around. You can choose your method based on your own needs:

  • Walk: It’s actually quite easy to walk around Reims. The biggest hurtle is getting from the train station (or center of Reims) to the area where you find most of the Champagne houses. This is about a 2 mile walk (40 mins). If you don’t want to take this initial walk, you can take a quick Uber or taxi ride from the train station. We recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, as it’s the furthest way from town (2 miles). To walk between any of the 5 Champagne houses mentioned, it will take you about 5 minutes or less.
  • Uber or Taxi: If you can’t or don’t want to walk, you can take an uber or taxi from the train station to any of the Champagne houses. Once you’re ready to go on to the next, you can call another Uber or taxi to take you there.
  • Rent a car: There is a convenient place near the train station to rent a car for the day. In fact, it’s just a few steps outside the door to the train station. It’ll cost around 40€ to rent a car for a day. We recommend using Expedia to book your rental car .

If you’re staying overnight in Reims, you’ll quickly learn that there isn’t a huge selection of hotels. We stayed at  Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix . If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, try the  Chateau Les Crayeres .

⇒ Be sure to check out our list of the drinks you should try in France . There’s so much more to enjoy beyond the Champagne.

Thank you so much for this perfect trip plan! Sooooo helpful 🙂

Glad you found it useful!

Thank you so much for your tips! Were there any bakeries nearby to grab a snack or light lunch between tastings? I seem to only be able to see these closer to the train yet am keen to do both Pommery & Veuve tastings (and will clearly needs some food between these!)

There are a few cheese shops and bakeries in town, but not right near the Champagne houses. I would recommend picking up some cheese, bread, pastries and taking them with you, so you don’t have to find something in between.

We’re planning an overnight in Reims next month – do you have any favorite places for dinner?

We really enjoyed L’Atelier and L’Alambic, which has a fun environment.

Are children (age 13) allowed on these tours? Thanks so much for the article! Very helpful.

Yes, they are allowed.

Do you have to book a tour or can you just show up and do a tasting? We are planning a day trip for Christmas Eve. We have a tour and tasting booked for Veuve Clicquot but wanted to be able to try one or two others without doing the tour.

For most places you need to book a tour. Not many just do tastings. However, if they do you would still likely need to make a reservation for Christmas Eve. Send them an email and ask what they offer. Veuve Clicquot is actually one that offers just tastings.

Great information, thank you for your detail! I’m planning a visit, but having trouble locating information for a tour at Laurent Perrier. Do you happen to know if they do tours?!

Hi Ashley, I think that tours may be closed to the public at this time. I couldn’t find any current tour information either.

We are considering doing some biking while visiting. Question…should we do Reims on foot one day and bike to Epernay day 2? Or, would a bike in the city be an asset or a hinderance? We wish to do lots of champagne tasting and plan on visiting both areas. We are only there two full days.

Melissa, I think a bike would be a great asset in both places. If only one day, I would bike around Reims and walk around Epernay, but you can definitely bike both. It’s about a 28-mile cycle between and easy roads.

  • Susan A 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Champagne house tour A lovely tour of two champagne houses with lots of information from our guide. At the first house we were met by one of the owners and she conducted the tasting. No one was at the second house which was a shame as it meant it was rather soulless but our guide was still super good. The minivan was comfortable. Read more Written April 19, 2024

  • M5279EYmartinl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome Champagne Tasting Experience Had a great time with sparkling tours. The whole team on WhatsApp and Ana who conducted our tour were fantastic as there was misunderstanding as to where the pick up was but they managed to resolve with no hassle. Now to the champagne tour itself. - the first venue was a smaller proprietor and the lady that hosted was really knowledgable and friendly. The champagne was lovely and we treated ourselves to a couple of bottles. Anna took us to the church and abbey where Don Pérignon was buried - this was a little bonus as was not expecting this. We then moved onto our final champagne tasting at a larger proprietor, again the champagnes were lovely. We were also lucky enough to share the trip with some lovely people and had a good laugh as well as enjoying a wonderful tasting experience. Read more Written March 29, 2024

  • GRANS069 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Private tour during the fall season. My mother and I booked a private tour and our tour guide is the most fabulous, funniest woman ever. Ana is truly a gem (100% highly recommended asking for Ana!) Ana is very knowledgeable, kind and speaks multiple languages (which came in handle for my mother who only speaks Spanish). Her presence felt like she was part of our family, she definitely made this experience a memorable one. Biggest highlight of our tour was at the house of Pommery and again Ana was the reason that our time in Pommery was magical! You will not be disappointed with lunch too! One of the best restaurant, my mother and I experienced in France. Don't look anywhere else if you want the best in the industry, just do you're own research prior to booking any tour. Our priavte tour was interrupted by weather and had to be cut short for our safety and the driver safety. Another reason took book with Sparkling Tours! They prioritize your safety! It was a unfortunate our tour was shorten but, I wouldn’t changed a thing. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR EVERYTHING! Read more Written January 16, 2024

Our guide Ana was so delightful: interesting, well-informed, and funny. She felt like an old friend by the end of our tour. We visited two excellent grower/producers and tasted 3-4 different champagnes at each. These are products you cannot try/buy anywhere but directly from the vintner. We purchased a case from each - and will probably regret not buying more... I cannot overstate how enjoyable this experience was - or how great Ana is. Even on a cold and rainy day it was a fantastic time. Read more Written November 27, 2023

There are many incredible wine regions in the US, and picking one to visit is best done by picking your favorite type of grape or wine style. California’s central coast and Oregon’s Willamette Valley are particularly special for Pinot noir, for example, while the Finger Lakes region of New York makes world-class riesling. There are few wine regions in the country — or, in fact, the world —- that are as famous as Napa and neighboring Sonoma.

California is the state that produces the most wine in the US, with 149 established American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). California’s Central Coast AVA is especially prolific.

How to Plan Your Eiffel Tower Visit

Reims, northeast of Paris, is situated on the Vesle River and the unofficial capital of the wine-growing, Champagne region (Champagne-Ardenne region) where the beautiful bubbly gets its name. Sparkling wine is sparkling wine, but only French sparkling wine can be called Champagne.

Picture of angel statue holding glass of champagne

The Champagne wine region has been a rich agricultural area of France going back to the rule of Charlemagne and produces approximately 300 million bottles of champagne a year.

Champagne is home to over 1900 municipalities, but only Reims can boast the Cathédrale of Notre-Dame de Reims (Reims Cathedral), a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is one of Europe’s most historic, Gothic churches and the site of French king coronations. Reims is also where the Germans surrendered to the Allies in May 1945 to end WWII in Europe.

If you like champagne and history, again, it would be a complete shame not to put Reims on your visit list while traveling single in Paris.

Wine vines and flowers Veuve Clicquot Reims France

You can certainly spend more than a day in Champagne. If you do, make Reims a home base while you tour the Champagne region.

If you don’t multiple days, however, Reims is definitely doable day trip from Paris. The fact that you can do a Champagne day trip to Champagne region from Paris without a car is a major bonus. Hence, this blog post.

For this self-guided Champagne itinerary, plan for at least 8 hours in Reims.

Why did I choose Reims over Épernay or any other Champagne city? It wasn’t just the Champagne Houses, it was also the Reims Cathedral , which I learned so much about in art school and was on my bucket list ever since.

Front of Reims Cathedral France

The Reims Cathedral is just one of the things to do in Champagne, France for your Champagne solo travel.

A great thing about doing a self-guided Paris to Champagne day trip? The Paris to Champagne train time is only 45 minutes if you ride the TGV train to Reims . Catch the train from the Paris Gare de l’Est.

Round trip Paris to Reims train tickets online are inexpensive. The train from Paris to Reims runs all day so you have multiple Paris departure/arrival options.

CORR Travel Tips

There are tickets available with train changes, but purchase a direct Paris to Reims train ticket to save travel time.

I also recommend reserving a seat in high season and downloading your ticket to your phone. To save some money, get your ticket online in advance .

To see more than Reims while visiting Champagne from Paris without a car, you can also access Epernay and Châlons-en-Champagne by train. However, this self-guided day trip itinerary only allows time for Reims (and it’s enough, trust me).

Trainline has Cheap Train and Bus Tickets

EN - 970x250

Reims is very walkable.  It’s flat with much to see in close proximity. This itinerary is purely on foot, and you’ll never be walking more than 30 minutes (max) at a time.

However, if you wish to get some more Reims in on your day trip or just rest your feet, Reims’ public buses and trams can help meet your needs. It’s inexpensive, too.

Champagne Day Trip Itinerary

This self-guided Champagne itinerary assumes you’ll return to Paris in time to relax and have dinner. That said, departing Paris before 9am with a direct train ticket is ideal.

Champagne Houses open 9:30am to 10am.  I know what you’re thinking. No, it’s never too early in the day to enjoy champagne.

You always have the option to dine in Reims for dinner to extend your day trip, of course.

Doing a walking Reims champagne tour is beneficial so you can get fresh air between bubblies. You won’t be as sleepy so you can enjoy more of the Reims sights.

Plus, let’s be real: you’re eating and drinking a fair bit of champagne, so walking is a great way to work off the calories.

The closest Champagne Houses open for tasting and touring are Champagne Charles de Cazanove and G.H. Mumm, with Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot being on the farther end of this Reims itinerary.

Stepping out of the Reims station, turn left and within 5 to 15 minutes you’ll hit your first tasting, depending on your preference.

Just next to the station is the first possibility, Champagne Charles de Cazanove , at 8 place de la République. If you’re on a budget, keep your money for the guided tours later in the day and pop in here for a tasting. It’s not as good as Mumm, in my humble opinion, but what do you have to lose by trying it?

Champagne Charles de Cazanove

If not, walk 10 minutes further to G.H.Mumm, 29 Rue du Champ de Mars . Enjoy a 90-minute Cordon Rouge experience (or other experience) while learning about Mumm’s champagne history. Check for tasting and guided tour hours and availability in advance. Times differ during the year.

Now that you’ve tickled your nose and are in the Reims vibe, head towards the city center to see Reims’ crowning (pardon the pun) glory, Reims Cathedral , just a 10 to 15-minute stroll away.

Reims Cathedral Reims France

The Cathedral of Reims , Place du Cardinal Luçon, was the site of over 25 French king coronations and the center of the European reconstruction efforts in 1962. Taking over 200 years to build and completed in the 15 th century, it was built in the classic, Gothic style with flying buttresses, ribbed arches and tall windows. It became a UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1991.

Altar inside Reims Cathedral

The cathedral is open 7:30am to 7:30pm except Sundays (check for hours), and free to enter.

Entry to Reims Cathedral France Reims France

If you want, take a guided tour to learn more about the cathedral’s history, book online at least two weeks in advance. I did not do the tour and, instead, strolled the vast interior provided by stunning ribbed arches while soaking in the architectural details and light from the colorful, rosary trace windows.

Reims Cathedral gargoyle

Feel free to forgo one of the champagne tastings on this itinerary and tour as much of the cathedral as you please. Audio guides are available for self-paced tours and tower tours available at certain hours. Make sure you’re ready to take on the 200+ stairs.

After spending an hour or so, or when you feel like you got enough pictures of the cathedral and enjoyed the open aired plaza, now’s the time to relax with a wonderful lunch with perhaps some more bubbly or glass of wine.

The goal is to find a place close to the cathedral or along the way to the next tasting, Veuve Clicquot . For your convenience, here are some sumptuous dining recommendations that vary depending on your budget or tastes:

  • Les Jardin Crayères , 7 Avenue du Général Giraud
  • Il Gusto , 48 Rue Dieu-Lumière
  • Le Parc Crayères , 64 boulevard Henry Vasnier
  • Au Plat du Jour, 217 Rue du Barbâtre

I decided to turn south from the cathedral for a 20 minute walk down the Rue des Capucins towards the beautiful Basilique Saint-Remi , another UNESCO World Heritage site . It’s free to enter and admire its lovely 11th century Romanesque nave.

I ended up at Il Gusto, just around the corner from the Basilique Saint-Remi, where I enjoyed a savory Italian meal. From there it was a mere 3-minute walk to Veuve Clicquot.

Il Gusto lunch meal Reims France

Pop into the Reims Touristic Office , 6 Rue Rockefeller, across from the Reims Cathedral plaza for more cuisine recommendations. They also provide Champagne House and accommodation recommendations.

Reims champagne tasting would not be complete without a Veuve Clicquot tour , 1, Rue Albert Thomas. I adore Veuve Clicquot, and adored the guided tour of this famous champagne’s caverns even more.

Front of Veuve Clicquot Boutique Shop_3907

The 90-minute Clicquot Signature tour is no longer available, but the Yellow Card 60-minute tour (in English) with two tastings looks to be very similar (confirm tour details with Veuve Clicquot), and at a reasonable price. I booked my tour just before lunch, and it was a small group probably because I was there in the off season, which I recommend. It felt like a more personalized tour.

Although you can reserve your tour on site, I would advise reserving in advance , especially in peak tourist season.

Woman walking down stairs to enter Veuve Clicquot cavern

The skilled and courteous tour guide leads you to the stunning underground cavern where you get a brief introduction to the champagne with the tour and tasting. Our champagne tour guide was pleasant and patient with the many champagne questions while also providing information on the history of the Champagne House and its caverns.

Dusty bottles of champagne in cavern

The caverns have not just housed the champagne, but they also served as underground access for the Allies during WWII.  Here you can see a Red Cross sign marking the way to the hospital for the wounded.

WWII Red Cross sign in Veuve Clicquot cavern

This Champagne House was my favorite tour on this champagne day trip.

Equally breathtaking, informational, and tasty is the Taittinger champagne tour experience. Located at 9, Place St Nicaise, Taittinger is just an 8-minute walk back towards the city center from Veuve Clicquot.

Again, I booked my champagne guided tour onsite. I relished the L’Instant Rosé tour with two tastings (I love Rosé). Tattinger offers a variety of champagne tastings with your tour. Note, they close at 5:30pm with the last champagne tour offered at 4:15pm.

* Tattinger’s cellar tour and tasting is reopening in 2024.

Tattinger employee conducting champagne tour

After a brief overview of the House, you descend down winding stairs 18 meters down to their historical, chalk quarry caverns, also an UNESCO World Heritage site . These caverns have housed champagne first made by Benedictine monks and have survived the French Revolution when the abbey did not.

Walking down spiral staircase to Tattinger cavern

The champagne is lovely and the staff very accommodating.  A very pleasant experience for sure.

Tattinger employee pouring champagne for tasting

One more for the road? After Taittinger, it’s only a 15 to 20-minute walk back to the city center. By now you’ve finished your 8-hour Paris to Champagne tours in Reims and tasted at 2 to 4 champagne houses, all within walking distance.

Before your Reims to Paris train, walk through the Place Drouet d’Erlon , sightsee or shop if that’s your thing. You’re bound to find a lovely space to sip another glass of champagne before your Champagne to Paris train departs.

Place Drouet d'Erlon Reims France

If you’re not in a hurry, have dinner in Reims.  There are multiple dining options in the vicinity.  Perhaps try one of these:

  • Le Bocal , 27 Rue de Mars
  • Le Boulingrin , 31 Rue de Mars
  • Le Crypto , 14 Place du Forum
  • Le Foch , 37 Boulevard Foch

I hope you truly enjoy your self-guided Champagne day trip from Paris to Reims without a car.

What time of year you visit Reims, what tasting/tours you choose, your lunch and Paris Reims train ticket will vary your total Champagne day trip from Paris budget, of course.

As a ballpark estimate, here is what you could expect to pay to plan your Champagne day trip from Paris budget (max estimate prices at time of writing):

  • Round-trip Paris Reims (direct) ticket bought in advance : 30€
  • Mumm Cordon Rouge Experience (1.5hr tour and tasting): 28€
  • Reims Cathedral (no tour): Free
  • Lunch of your choosing: 35€
  • Veuve Clicquot Yellow Card (1-hour tour with two tastings): 35€
  • Taittinger Cellar Tour (with 4 tastings): 35€

Again, these are estimates, but how does roughly 175€ sound for a full day in Champagne with three champagne house tours and tastings, sound?

Do a budget lunch and forgo a champagne house and you still have an amazing day in Champagne without a car for your travel budget.

Overall, while it may not be the most luxurious Champagne experience, it is still possible to have a great Champagne day trip from Paris to Reims on a budget using this self-guided Paris day trip itinerary and complete your Paris solo travel. You only live once, and regret sucks .

Sold on the idea of taking a Champagne day trip from Paris but want to take a tour instead? I hear ya. Sometime’s it’s nice to break up the solo travel and meet people. No problem, I totally understand.

The good news is you can get a Paris Champagne tour to Reims (or a day trip to Épernay from Paris tour) that could suit your Paris itinerary. If you are going to pay for a Paris Champagne tour, I would stick to a small group tour for the best value.

Here are some highly rated, options I would consider the best Champagne tours from Paris because they are small group tours and reasonably priced. I would consider doing one of these tours while traveling France.

Also included are some other tours in Reims for convenience. Just book early if you’re traveling during the high season.

Best Champagne Tours from Paris & Reims Tours

Perhaps you’re thinking now one day in Champagne just not enough. Here you can find a complete listing of Champagne’s Champagne Houses for informtion on how to visit each, with a Champagne region of France map to those champagne houses that allow tours of their champagne cellars.

Again, the Reims Tourist Office can assist or help you book a tour in English.

With trains running between Reims, Châlons-en-Champagne, and Épernay , it is possible to expand upon your Paris to Champagne region tour without a car.

"I train like an athlete": Celine Dion reveals how she manages stiff person's syndrome

The singer was diagnosed with a neurological disease in 2023, leading to the cancellation of all her tour dates, by nardos haile.

Celine Dion is opening up about her journey with stiff person's disease.

In a recent interview with Vogue France, the five-time Grammy winner gave an update about her health and said she was “well, but it’s a lot of work,” adding: “I’m taking it one day at a time.”  Dion was diagnosed with Moersch-Woltman syndrome , more commonly known as stiff-person syndrome, in May last year. The diagnosis led the 55-year-old singer to focus on her health, ultimately canceling her upcoming tour dates and halting live performances as the disorder affected her ability to walk and sing.

Since her diagnosis, Dion said she spends five days a week on “athletic, physical and vocal therapy.”

She continued, “I work on my toes, my knees, my calves, my fingers, my singing, my voice . . . I have to learn to live with it now and stop questioning myself. At the beginning I would ask myself: ‘Why me? How did this happen? What have I done? Is this my fault?’”

But Dion revealed that her perspective has since then shifted: "The way I see it, I have two choices. Either I train like an athlete and work super hard, or I switch off and it’s over, I stay at home, listen to my songs, stand in front of my mirror and sing to myself. I’ve chosen to work with all my body and soul, from head to toe, with a medical team. I want to be the best I can be. My goal is to see the Eiffel Tower again.”

15 people were injured in a tram crash at Universal Studios Hollywood Saturday evening.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the victims were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. KTLA, however, reported at least one person sustained critical injuries.

According to a statement from the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department, "deputies responded to the lower parking lot of Universal Studios Hollywood regarding a tour tram collision. The collision caused several passengers to fall out of the vehicle."

The trams are used in the theme park's signature Studio Tour, transporting guests through iconic Hollywood film sets. It's unclear what caused the crash, or if any other vehicles were involved but LASD tells Entertainment Weekly that the "cause of the accident is still under investigation and there is no further information at this time."

The LACFD Public Information Office confirmed the incident in a tweet , writing "at 9:05 units were dispatched to a tram accident where 15 patients were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. CHP will be the lead investigatory agency for all further inquiries."

“Saturday night on the Studio Tour, a tram collided with a guard rail while making a left turn," a spokesperson for Universal Studios said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly . "Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor."

The statement continued, "We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority. We have resumed Studio Tour operations with a modified route and are reinforcing our operational and safety protocols."

Earlier this month, Universal Studios Hollywood was hit with a lawsuit stemming from a 2022 incident in which passengers claim they were stranded while riding Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, an attraction that takes guests through notable locations in  J.K. Rowling 's Wizarding World, including the Great Hall, the grounds of Hogwarts, and the Quidditch pitch.
