A dynamic night with Blake Rose in Nashville
Over the last few years, rising indie pop artist Blake Rose has been steadily making his mark across the world. A gifted vocalist hailing from Perth, Australia (now residing in Los Angeles, California), Rose constructs compositions around his emotionally empowering lyrics, using combinations of synthesized and acoustic orchestrations alongside a myriad of self-produced melodic soundscapes that keep drawing listeners back to his creations. Beginning with his hit “Hotel Room” back in 2018, he quickly gained a following on social media platforms. Then, with the release of his single “Gone” in 2020, his success subsequently launched him to unimaginable levels.
Following a marathon month of The Suddenly Okay Tour (named for his newest album Suddenly Okay that dropped this year) throughout North America, Rose made a stop at a definitive Nashville, Tennessee venue, The End, to bring his genre-defining sound to the Music City. This is Rose’s first-ever headlining tour; with country artist Max McNown as the night’s opening act, attendees of all backgrounds and interests came together for seamless contrast and incredible joy.
McNown awed the crowd with his folk-resembling songs, including a heartfelt piece written for his brother after he overcame cancer a couple years prior.
There was barely a dry eye in the room. Shortly after, he launched into a cover of Noah Kahan ’s “Stick Season”, which drove the crowd wild. The opening set concluded with McNown’s country ballad “A Lot More Free”, a fan-favorite that has gone viral with tens of thousands of audio reposts on multiple social media platforms. Rich sounds from dual acoustic guitars complemented McNown’s storyline lyrics and vocal distortion to create one of the most iconic, emotionally drawing sounds in the 21st Century country genre.
After McNown warmed up the crowd, Blake Rose took the stage and began with some lighthearted crowd work; something that seems to be growing sparse in live music from prominent artists these days. Rose showed genuine appreciation to every person in the room, often interacting with them throughout the show through anecdotes, questions, and responses. Even more impressive is that it felt as though space for this connection had been budgeted into the allotted time, as the banter and 16-song set concluded within a perfect hour.
Once the onlookers felt welcomed, Rose began his time with “Rollerblades (A World Gone By)”. The room filled with the staccato notes of an electric guitar, while warm vocals and various percussion overlaid with iconic 80s reverb joined with pop synth melodies. The room shook with the movement of strangers dancing together as Rose continued with a few more pieces reminiscent of popular 2010s groups such as The 1975 — but with an immensely refreshing alt rock twist.
“Heavy Shit” brought on an unexpected turn near the halfway point of the night.
Strong pop rock undertones alongside the deep, full sound of brass and strings in pronounced thirds faded into a belted bridge backed by a sole beat; this effectively created a dance masterpiece that you couldn’t help but move to. A ballad marked the middle of the experience, “Sweet Caledonia” off 2021’s A World Gone By , showcasing Rose’s multi-instrumental talent through a beautiful piano melody, utilizing major chords with just enough dissonance to evoke that ‘main character’ feeling in everyone watching. The room itself was almost silent as soft drumlines joined in and grew, with a break at the bridge that seemed to drop back into said silence. The following explosion of sound was perfectly paired with dramatic lighting shifts at the front of the house.
The night started to wrap with “Suddenly Okay”, the namesake of both Rose’s newest album and the tour itself. Snare and amplified acoustic guitars, paired with multiple vocalists singing in unison, rings in the stomp-and-clap tune, melodically different from Rose’s past releases — a refreshing shift in the night’s musical lineup. Played at the end of the hour, a new personal favorite “Hotel Room” was the one that put Blake Rose on the map years ago. An anthem on broken relationships, this piece showcases a simple guitar line over a sultry backbeat that takes you back to the era of smooth 90s R&B… just with a heavier rock twist. Transitioning into the bridge, the instrumentation gave way to pure percussion, emphasizing the drum cadence against the lyrics, while the lights shifted for dramatic scenery and a fully immersive moment. During this section, Caleb Hulin, Rose’s bass player, joined Rose onstage in playing their respective floor tom in a style similar to ODESZA’ s live drum line.
Rose managed to break a drumstick in the process, passing it off to grateful fans when the song concluded.
An artist that can successfully intertwine elements of multiple genres into their own work to create something unique with every song is a rare commodity; Blake Rose has managed to do just that. With stylistic similarities to rock, folk, melodic EDM, synth pop, R&B, and more, Rose has managed to produce music enjoyed by all. His Nashville performance combined original soundscapes, captivating lyrics, dynamic lighting, and intimate audience interaction for an immaculate display of what live music is really about.

Would like you to know how pleased we were with our tour with David on Sunday. His knowledge is impressive but it is his enthusiasm for his subject which makes him special. He suggested we leave a review on TripAdvisor if we were pleased with our tour, and I have just done that (you will find my review as ‘Sunseeker’) David’s tour was a perfect start to our short break in York – thank you.
Hi, we went on a tour hosted by David on Sat 31st Oct and were so impressed by his knowledge which was nothing sort of astounding. He has a real passion for his subject and what he doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing. An incredible man and guide. Katherine & Dan
Our family had a fantastic tour with Alex 2 weeks ago. It was raining during the whole tour but Alex’s narrative was so captivating and fun that my husband and I and our children completely forgot about the rain and thoroughly enjoyed the walk.
Citylife Nottingham says thanks you for the amazing tour in York last week! Looking forward to the next one!
We loved it! Alan is so funny in teaching history on the ways though York. We really enjoyed our tour this June. We were not aware that the tour takes 3 hours, so may be you should inform about that for better planning, but it was worth every step and every minute! Great tour, great tourguide! Thank you!
What a fantastic character David is. Held me spellbound for nearly three hours. His knowledge is amazing & his boundless enthusiasm infectious. Regretably I felt I underchanged him & would very much like to reward him fully if this is acceptable. As a fellow Yorkshireman (& aged) we bantered a lot and I wished I could have gone on right through to the end, and beyond as he offered a further hour and a half !! I shall visit again & seek him out possibly in the Minster next time if you can’t help. “hee’s reet good yon Dave sithee !”
We enjoyed David’s tour the full 3 hours, he even asked if we would like to go on for another hour. If we hadn’t booked a table for dinner and if my feet weren’t killing me I would have accepted his offer. David is very enthusiastic, has a vast historical knowledge and a great sense of humor. Despite his yorkshire accent I had no problems understanding him (I’m Dutch). This 3 hour tour is highly recommended.
Absolutely fantastic tour, I would recommended this to anyone with an interest in the history of York. Alan made the tour exceptionally interesting and amusing. A must do for all visitors to this fascinating city.
I have done 3 tours – one with Alan and two with Alix .All three were really good . Saw something different every time . My sister in law is coming from Peterborough for the day to do one with me in May .The tours are very informative . I don’t know how the guides remember all the facts and figures ! Mind boggling !
We did a tour with David today. Unbelievable knowledge and we appreciated the fact that it was not at all rushed. In fact we could have soent all day with him before lunch beckoned. Would recommend
Dave led us through, around and under York’s many streets and wonderful buildings. His knowledge, passion, energy and enthusiasm made our tour a lovely experience. We would highly recommend his tours and definitely return for another should the opportunity arise. Thanks Dave for a brilliant experience. Yvonne and Graham Harrison Chester
We are doing a trip advisor comment, after having a great time with David Haw on Friday 18 November. He was a very knowledgeable man and it was a very enjoyable few hours. We saw many amazing places we would have otherwise missed.
Our York walking tour with David was excellent. His enthusiasm, knowledge and incredible recall of people, dates and places wove a really interesting story of the characters and events that have shaped York across the centuries. Highly recommended.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
This pop star might be cursing your favourite A-list Hollywood relationships
Share this with
Hollywood darlings Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds may have just had their fate sealed after the Gossip Girl icon took an innocent picture with a K-pop star.
Blake and Ryan have been happily married since 2012 and share four children together; James, nine, Inez, seven, Betty, four, and an 14-month-old whose name has not been revealed.
After a Tiffany & Co event in New York , fans were left devastated as the 36-year-old star posed for a picture with Rosé, the lead dancer from girl group BlackPink .
A bizarre response to those not chronically online as Rosé and Blake are not romantically linked in any way nor should a smiling snap cause so much ruckus.
However, the 27-year-old singer has actually become the centre of what’s known as the Rosé Curse — the relationship death warrant.
Within months, sometimes even weeks, of stars meeting the K-pop icon their romance fizzles out.
What is Rosé’s Curse?
It all started when K-pop band BlackPink erupted into the mainstream with hits like How You Like That and Kill This Love.
Rosé and her bandmates became firm fixtures at events with other famous faces, especially after their stellar Hyde Park British Summer Time performance .
As their fame skyrocketed, a strange phenomenon started to be noticed by internet users after Florence Pugh took a picture with the singer.
Days later the Dune star announced she and her long-term partner Zach Braff had ended their relationship and The Rosé Curse was born.
Bubbling away on the fringe of platforms like X and Reddit, fans will share snaps of celebrities with the Pink Venom singer as a warning.
Notably it is only pictures with women that warrants this fear over their love life, men seem to be immune to the ‘cursé’ so far.
Blake’s snap with Rosé sparked mass concern as user everloretay simply captioned the picture with ‘NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO’ and crying emojis.
‘NOOO NOOO SHE WILL BREAK THE CURSE,’ replied braxtonmg as swiftlyririi added: ‘blake and ryan istg nooooooooo.’
Others insisted the couple were strong enough to ‘break the curse’ insisting that they ‘won’t survive’ if the iconic pair call it quits.
Which Hollywood couples have split after meeting Rosé?
While Blake and Ryan remain unscathed, other huge couples have not been so lucky — including Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn .
Yes, the All Too Well hitmaker fell foul of this curse as she grinned with Rosé at the 2022 VMAs after party in August.
By April 2023, rumours had emerged that after six years together she and the Conversations with Friends actor had gone their separate ways.
However, Taylor’s Midnights album which contains songs thought to be about her split with Joe came out in October 2022 so the break could have come much sooner.
Either way, it was ‘joever’ and the Taylor-Rosé picture became infamous among fans.
The Black Dog hitmaker was not the first, however, as a selfie of Gigi Hadid with the K-pop star emerged from the Met Gala in 2021.
They danced together in videos and seemed to be having a great time at the iconic fashion event, which took place in September.
A month later the 29-year-old model announced she and Zayn Malik had gone their separate ways.
In October 2019, Rosé posted a picture with Halsey after a chance meeting in Paris. March 2020, Halsey and Evan Peters split .
The big mainstream push was in June 2022 when the singer attended a Tiffany & Co event and took a picture with Florence.
Two months later the Little Women icon revealed she and the Scrubs legend had split ‘earlier that year’ after a three year relationship.
Camila Cabello , Kaia Gerber , Kendall Jenner and Billie Eilish have all split with their partners after a picture with Rosé.
While it started as a niche in-joke among fans of BlackPink, the bizarre coincidences keep piling up as more internet users have become aware of the curse.
We doubt Blake and Ryan will pay any attention to the Rosé Curse but all eyes will be on them to break this wild cycle.

Last month, James Blake shared his latest single ‘Famous Last Words’ . It’s set to appear on the COVID-delayed ‘Friends That Break Your Heart’ alongside previous singles ‘Say What You Will’ and ‘Life Is Not The Same’ .
The forthcoming record follows the artist’s 2019 studio effort ‘Assume Form’ , which NME said found James Blake “clear-headed and in focus like never before”.
Our glowing five-star review added: “Gone is the hazy, south London night bus ambience of Blake gone by. In its place is a newfound sharpness, a twinkle of grand piano signalling the record’s arrival, while, lyrically, the musician pushes through the cloudy mindset that once consumed him.”

Having only discovered Blue Rose Code by chance on the BBC quay sessions, they have become a default playlist so we were delighted to find the guys were playing in Aberdeen.
If you have never listened, do it. Edina and Polksdown Waltz would be a good starting point.
If you have listened and never seen them live, get tickets.
Ross wears his heart on his sleeve and his music, although deeply personal, captivated the eclectic audience and drew everyone in instantly.
Complimented perfectly by Lyle and John, guitarist and pianist who make Blue Rose Code the wonder it is.
Having seen the band grow over the past year, it's beautiful to watch them enthral a larger crowd. Selfishly, I hope they don't become the next 'big thing' as the intimacy of their music feels almost like treasure.

Attended the Blue Rose Code concert at Irvine Harbour Arts Centre and witnessed a master class. One of my top three concerts of the year, with Ross displaying all his skills and expertise. The set was perfectly tuned to what was a small intimate venue and he had the audience eating out of his hand throughout the performance.
I am not an expert on the technical side of music, but can only say that I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and will certainly be going to see this band again and would have no hesitation returning to the venue, which was friendly and well run.
A wonderful evening in Whitstable, crowned by the intimate performance by Ross, Eliza & Scott aka Blue Rose Code.
A set list including; Edina, Acquainted with the night/Silent Drums, One Day at a time, Whitechapel as well as some new songs, such as Scotland. A friendly welcome to Ross, his 4th time playing this venue. Let's hope he returns again soon ! Ross is a truly talented singer songwriter, who certainly knows how to entertain an audience, at all levels. If the Blue Rose Code are playing near you, you need to check them out.
This was our sixth time seeing blue ros code and in my opinion the best yet. Ross Wilson is very engaging and always seems so happy to be performing. He played the whole of his new album and some old favorites too. The string quartet he had with him this time were a great addition, but wether he has a full band or just a two piece its always a treat, thanks Ross will definatley be back next time you are in town
We both really enjoyed the night. Great heart felt songs beautifully sung & all the musicians are very talented. Would highly recommend anyone to see Blue Rose Code. Also St Luke’s is the perfect venue for an intimate gig. I never go to big venues like the Hydro anymore.
What an amazing band. Seen them once before but quite different with brass. Blown away again. Songwriting amazing. Voice amazinget. Music amazing. Together.... mind blowing. Everyone should see them at least once live.
Great venue too.
The concert was small and intimate and very well organised.
Blue Rose Code were at their best with a sensational performance, this has possibly been the highlight of my 'concerting' year.
A brilliant night with outstanding performances!!
Saw Blue Rose Code supporting Van Morrison at the bandstand.Such a great discovery. Often we just want to get past the support and on to the main act, but I wanted them to stay on! Have only listened to them since then . Sorry Van !!!
By far the best act I've seen in 2016 (together with Sigur Ros). Blue Rose code has reached a level of maturity on stage that is truly remarkable - commanding the audience while still genuinely enjoying making music. Thank you Ross.
The show was brilliant. Great songs, extremely well written and superb musicianship from both guys. Russ was also very amusing. It was a great night and we came away with several cds.
Can't wait to see them again!
