Zumba® Classes Yoga/Pilates Classes

We have fitness classes on our sea days which are Friday and Sunday.  9am-4pm.  

Starting with yoga and some body work, we roll into Zumba® and burn off any cruise calories.  Enjoy your lunch hour and we get together again for some late afternoon classes.  

Attend as many as you like!

 All of our instructors are licensed and experienced.

Sunday dinner & costume party.

Enjoy your day in Cozumel!   There are options for everyone including beaches and resort visits by the day, shopping, snorkeling & diving, cave and eco tours, ATV rides and zip lines.   Excursions generally leave early so no fitness classes this day.  We recommend you book your excursion prior to our cruise via the Royal Caribbean website, so you don't wait in line on the ships concierge.

We meet at a designated location and promenade to dinner together!  We always make quite a splash, by now everyone on ship knows who we are!  Costume theme to be announced.

(Participation is not required - costumes optional of course!)

Other dinner nights, Thursday, Friday and Saturday your regular cruise wear is fine.  Some people do pack a nice dinner outfit and some stay casual.  Your choice.

Meet Steve, the owner of Barracuda Travel, he has driven us back and forth to Ports all over Florida.   He picks us up in the studio parking lot at ZumbaSarasota.com 4900 Fruitville Rd. Sarasota, FL 34232 at approx 10am EST on Thursday the 6th and returns us to the same place on Monday morning the 10th.  

This year we are excited to again have a bus departing from Punta Gorda for Robert's group.  Pick up will be at the Punta Gorda YMCA at approx 9am on the 6th.

We usually are back at both locations on Monday between 10 and 11am.

Bus Details

If you are looking for a quiet ride over to the Port of Tampa, our bus may not be for you.  We call it the party bus and there may possibly be alcoholic beverages on the bus.   Please bring garbage bags with you so we can keep the bus tidy for Steve.

People often ask if they can leave their cars in the studio parking lot while on the trip.  We would suggest getting dropped off if possible, cars left in the studio parking lot over the weekend are at your own risk.

Dining Details

Cabin questions.

We are at the 5:30pm dining time and we sit together nightly.  Your dining table will be on your room keycard from Royal Caribbean and we do our best to sit people together who have requested it.  There are various table sizes in the dining room and sometimes we have to work with the area we have been assigned.  

People often ask to sit with their favorite instructor so we often try to rotate each night where instructors are at different tables during the cruise.  If we are short on space and this doesn't work out we will visit for dessert!

Can Non-Zumba Sarasota members join the cruise?  Of course they can!  People often ask if they can bring friends, children or spouses.  Anyone is welcome to join us whether or not they want to do our fitness classes.  We always need photographers and people to cheer us on!  We are always happy to meet new friends they are most welcome!

Do we decorate doors?  Sure, but just do it if you want to be found!  Bring your door decor with you as well as tape.

Some suitcases arrive outside your cabin door sooner than others.  Don't panic, they will arrive!

Travel Documentation

Check your passport now and see when it expires.  If you need to update it, now is the time.  It is possible to travel without a passport, however it is not recommended.   If you do not intend to have a valid passport, please let Fantasy Travel know at time of booking and they can give you information about alternative documentation.  ***You will need your passport or other documentation to board the ship, do not place it in your checked bags.

Contemporary cruise vessels have the reputation for top indulgence but are also excellent for losing weight - if you resist the free-food temptation, consume low-calorie food and exercise on board. Passenger liners have state-of-the-art fitness facilities and onboard gymnasiums often rival successfully the land-based gyms - adding the extra of ocean views.

Follows our choice of best for fitness cruise lines and ships.

• Carnival Cruise Lines large ships offer top-deck located SportSquares (outdoor) in addition to their indoor gyms. SportSquares feature jogging tracks, ropes courses, outdoor exercise machines. Newest ships have Skyride (bike ride / peddled roller coaster) and SkyFitness (outdoor gym).
• Celebrity Cruises ships have some of the best gyms and spas at sea, also offer Gravity Reformer classes (you "drive" a glide board by using your own weight) and various Zumba classes (included in-pool Aqua Zumba).
• Crystal Cruises (on select voyages) offer master-led Tai Chi classes, PGA-pro golf classes, "Walk on Water" / WOW program (burn calories by walking for resistance with weighted vest), "Mind, Body and Spirit" themed cruises (workout with guest speakers and instructors).

• Cunard ships offer resistance workouts (walking around deck with weighted vest), stretching, lawn bowling, fencing lessons.
• Seabourn ships offer private sessions and sports classes, premium gyms ((Kinesis Wall), drop-down marina platform for complimentary watersports (sailing, sea kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, water aerobics).
• Silversea launched a collection of wellness cruises in Asia, Australia, Oceania, Africa, and the Indian Ocean. • The experience is all-inclusive (if chosen upon booking) and begins pre-cruise with a questionnaire determining participant's specific goals. Weight-Loss Cruises

Healthy eating habits can be easily maintained on weight loss cruises. There are two ways to lose weight on cruise vacations - participating in group activities (pre-scheduled) and eat healthily. Weight loss cruise ship programs provide in-demand activities and often feature high-powered celebrities.

Weight loss groups receive dietary support from onboard nutritionists who conduct seminars on healthy living. Passengers enjoy healthy dining options via a complete menu prepared with attention to nutritional value and taste. Kitchen (galley) staff answers the most special diet requests:

Health and fitness on weight loss cruise travel vacation (tips)

Fitness activities and onboard exercises on weight loss-themed voyages help (and can upgrade) personal weight loss programs. Shipboard exercises include aerobics, yoga, tai-chi, jogging, deck walks, special exercise programs, water aerobics, special spa treatments, pedometer tour walks (ashore).

• Before the voyage is good to contact dietitian to help you establish personal food guidelines and dietary goals.
• Request an online or printed food template for tracking food consumption.
• Book the cruise through your group. It's cheaper as the group's coordinator can get group discount fares.
• Confirm weight loss dining plans and special fares if you book through cruise company websites.
• Weight loss themed cruise activities include exercise classes (held all day), wellness lectures, healthy cooking demonstrations, exclusive access to special meals (excluded from regular onboard menus).
• Shore excursion options include day trips for biking, horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, climbing, rafting.

How to Lose Weight on a Cruise (tips)

The phenomenon of gaining weight while on cruises is well-known and depressing. Ship travel vacations are also food traps as passengers tend to lose control and overeat. Culinary displays, and all-inclusive buffet and fast-food are not easy to resist.

To lose weight on cruises is another challenge. Most cruise shipping companies now provide more onboard activities and healthier menus - thanks to highly-trained chefs, food is delicious and you can actually lose weight. Industry's largest companies -  Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL)- attract customers with most-innovative ships, but also with shipboard dining changes to meet the market's demands. Both corporations introduced low-cal and low-fat (still delicious) diet menus, more active excursions, free workouts.

• On the ship, you can eat for free at the main dining rooms and the Lido buffet. Choosing the buffet is a bad option for losing weight and a great one for gaining weight - think of heavy cream salads, pizzas, heavy desserts. Dining rooms always have low-calorie items. Choose one starter, one salad, main course, and dessert. Each menu section has at least one low-calorie item. You can also ask for modifications.
• After dining, take a deck walk to burn some calories - Promenade and upper decks also offer the best ocean views. You walk miles without noticing.
• Between decks take the stairs instead of elevators - this little change really helps to lose weight on a cruise.
• Stay away from beers, frozens, creamy drinks. Ask for their diet versions of mixed drinks. If you really have to drink beer, drink draft beers (no preservatives).
• Eat fruits, fiber, and cheese on breakfast instead of pancakes and eggs. Start lunch with water and salad before the buffet. Drink diet soda, or better-iced tea. Add some pizza to the drinks with fruit punch or lemonade.
• Ship's gym (also complimentary) is the best way to lose weight. Indoor gym equipment usually includes free weights and weight machines, treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, steppers, rowing machines. Use the gym on schedule - and stick to it. Gyms are open between 6-8 am and 8-10 pm (depending on line/boat). To avoid congestion, the best workout times are morning, mid-day, before dinner and before closing (also during port stay). Sports classes are priced around USD 10-15 pp (yoga, aerobics, pilates, tai-chi, spinning). Free classes and seminars are also offered. Visit ship’s Information Desk to find out freebies in the list of weekly activities.
• Book at least one shore excursion with mild or heavy activity. Try kayaking and bike riding - enjoy the new scenery while losing weight ashore. Intense walking and even shopping is a good workout in ports of call!
• If you want free water, trek to the dining area - and repeat until not thirsty. Hydration is of great importance to weight loss.
• Participate in shipboard sports contests, play deck games, enjoy disco's / lounge's dance parties.

Healthy food on cruise ships

No doubt, food on vacation is of great importance. When you're onboard you rely on ship’s culinary team for nutritious meals to get you moving on tours and excursions. For those who have chosen a meat-free lifestyle or who medically have to avoid fast foods, cruise ship food used to be challenging. Cruise lines quickly reacted to increase healthy food options onboard their vessels. Almost all cruise lines also provide vegetarian and vegan food options on their ship menus.

• Celebrity Cruises offers “Lean and Light” menu options on lunches and dinners. Onboard healthy food menu items have less than 30% calories from fat, set by the American Cancer Society (cancer.org) and  Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (eatright.org). Among such menu items are tender steamed vegetables, rack of veal, special desserts. Since 2014, Celebrity ships offer SPE certified food options. SPE examines nutrition, taste, portion size.
• Norwegian Cruise Line  partnered with Cooking Light magazine for healthy lifestyle recipes on NCL ship menus.
• Royal Caribbean has a “Vitality” menu with 3 courses of less than 800 calories. An example is the double-cut slow-roasted pork loin steak (298 calories).
• Holland America was the first to announce (in 2012) its vegetarian-only menu (also with vegan meals) available for lunch and dinner in the main dining rooms. After advertising the menu, HAL added 30 new vegetarian dishes and more vegetarian options to the Lido lunch buffet.
• All luxury cruise brands offer Spa menus with lighter fare.  Oceania ,  Cunard , and  RSSC-Regent have Spa treatment menus by Canyon Ranch  - renowned brand providing exclusive spa services at sea. Their healthy cruise food menus gave balanced meals with more fiber and protein.

How to NOT Gain Weight on a Cruise (tips)

On all cruise ships, meals are ticket price-inclusive - which ranks cruise travel among the most gaining weight risky. The all-inclusive shipboard food options include buffets, sit-down meals, room service, snacks, and fast-food bars. Ships also provide complimentary exercise classes and gyms to counteract calories.

• Plan your meals.
• On formal nights have low-fat breakfast and light lunch.
• Most ships post evening menus at lunchtime - read it before lunch.
• Don't forget the alcohol calories.
• Limit wine, beer, cocktails, order spirits diet mixers.
• Avoid bar snacks and salty foods.
• At lunchtime, stay away from poolside bars (hot dogs, burgers, chips).
• Drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated.
• Special workout CLOTHES for your trip are a good  packing tip  - after you've devoted valuable luggage space to fitness routine chances to workout on the ship are way better.
• Active shore excursions are better than passive ACTIVITIES (like bingo, quizzes or trivia). Select a bicycle tour over bus sightseeing hiking over beach day. Add your own activities to passive excursions- half hour beach walk before the sun lounger is a good tip. When weather permits, walking or jogging on Sports Deck while enjoying the sea view is a must.
• Some great MEALS are with high-calorie accompaniments or heavy sauces - leave off sauces and salad dressings and substitute them with side dishes. Eat light breakfast, resist sugary treats.
• Cruise ship swimming pools are crowded during the day. Early morning is the best time for a swim or water aerobics.
• Dancing at the lounge or nightclub is also an exercise. Take dance lessons (salsa, ballroom, tango, waltz, samba) to practice some new moves - and to meet new people.
• Ship's sports deck has half- of a full-size court (basketball/volleyball/tennis), shuffleboard, paddle tennis, mini-golf course golf simulators (driving range), even bocce court, croquet, and bowls. Royal Caribbean ships have rock-climbing walls and surf simulators - both complimentary, with the equipment being provided.
• Largest river cruise lines offer on their boats complimentary bicycles (even electric bikes) on all excursions, and even on private tours.

Italian architects invented a new vessel design for a floating gym room powered by human energy. The 20-m (66 ft) long "Paris Navigating Gym" ship is powered by all twelve ARTIS machines (professional Technogym exercise equipment) harvesting power generated by the humans exercising inside.

The boat's transparent bubble design is based on the popular Bateaux Mouches tour boats used for passenger ferry shipping on River Seine since the early 20th century. The "Human-Powered Floating Gym" project was developed via a partnership between Technogym, Terreform ONE (ecological design, nonprofit organization) and URBEM SA (research and investment company). Technogym's ARTIS bikes and cross trainers power the unique riverboat by using the electricity generated by the gym-goers inside.

Generally speaking, river cruise ship gyms are something quite rare, and when available - usually smaller as both room size and a number of machines. Still, fitness addicts may find them onboard many new-generation riverboats in the fleets of Viking, Uniworld, AMAwaterways. Each of Avalon Waterways' newer ships has not large gym room but provides enough equipment to help guests have a decent workout. On Danube River, Avalon cruise ships often operate sports-themed "Wellness European River Cruise" itineraries, featuring healthy lifestyle lectures and special outdoor (top deck) classes.

What are the Zumba Convention 2024 Dates?

The Zumba Convention 2024 dates are Thursday, August 8 – Sunday, August 11, 2024.

How Much Does Zumba Convention Cost?

I wrote this blog post to answer the question “How much does Zumba Convention cost?”

Where did my ZinCon cost information come from? This blog post is the result of my research using my personal receipts and notes as well as comments from many others in the Facebook group.

Where Will Zumba Convention 2024 Be Held?

Zumba Convention is typically* held in Orlando, FL . Zumba Convention usually takes over a few buildings near I-drive:

• The Hyatt (where many events, like the theme party , trainings, and sessions take place)
• The Orlando Convention Center (where you can typically find registration, the Fitness Concert , the official Zumba Wear store , and many sessions and trainings)
• In some years, there have been sessions at nearby hotels, the Rosen and the Hilton

*Note: For the exact and confirmed location details for 2024, please check the official Zumba Convention web site (linked below). Zumba unfortunately doesn’t put up the site until a couple months before the event, which is why I’m sharing the above general info.

What is the Zumba Convention Schedule?

Zumba usually likes to wait until a couple months before the event to announce the official Zumba Convention schedule.

Typically, you’ll be able to select from various workshops and choreography sessions with an option to do an entire Zumba training session on one (possibly two) of the days.

From what I remember from the nine ZinCons I’ve attended, you will be BUSY! Most sessions don’t start too early, but you’ll be pretty go-go-go morning to night between workshops and other events, like the theme party.

What Is Zumba Convention Like?

As cheesy as it sounds, it’s really hard to explain what Zumba Convention is like without actually going and experiencing it for yourself. It’s one of the most fun things I’ve ever done in my life. The presenters are top notch, and you learn so much. I love the diversity of attendees and how our love of dance and music brings us all together. Attending Zumba Convention really helped me uplevel as a Zumba instructor while also adding a lot of joy to my life.

This is great if you want to see photos from past events and read about my experiences attending every year since 2011 (though I haven’t been back since the global you-know-what).

Zumba typically takes their Zumba Convention site down in between events. So if you click on the below link at the time I’m writing this post (or before they’ve republished it), it will say to check back later.

Regardless, it will be good to bookmark this for when it goes live: https://convention.zumba.com/

You’ll want this site handy for when when they announce sessions, presenters, and other ZinCon info. The site will have great information you can use to start thinking about what sessions you want to attend and help with other planning.

Plus, you’ll do your registration at the official site, once they open it up. The timing on when registration will open varies year to year. I want to say it typically happens a couple months before the event. So check a couple months before the Zumba Convention 2023 dates. Or use this tip…

Tip : I usually listen for rumblings of when registration will open in the Facebook Group and also look for an email announcement from Zumba. The ZinCon crowd is passionate and highly motivated. I have seen sessions get booked up within hours of registration opening. I do think Zumba has tried to prevent this from happening but wanted to share just in case you have your heart set on one in particular.

Zumba Convention 2023 Facebook Group

As far as I know there is not an “official” Zumba-sponsored Facebook group. However, there is a great ZinCon group on Facebook here (click) that I’ve joined.

Heads Up : They will ask for your Zumba ID # when you request access to the group.

Note: The ZinCon community has to be one of the MOST friendly and kind I’ve ever encountered. Still, please exercise caution when dealing with strangers on the internet. Please use your best judgement and prioritize your safety. I’m a blogger, not a safety expert. I’m sharing this Facebook group because I’m personally in it and find it helpful.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways. 

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that? 

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities. 

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy". 

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney. 

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way. 

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event. 

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

A couple left their home to move onto a residential cruise ship — see inside their cabin on Villa Vie Odyssey

• Angela and Stephen Theriac purchased a cabin on the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey .
• The ship plans to sail around the world every 3 ½ years. Its launch has been delayed by three months.
• The cheapest dual-occupancy cabin starts at about $100,000, with an additional $3,500 monthly fee.

Angela Theriac hit a turning point in 2018.

In a span of six months, her mom and oldest brothers died, her husband faced a health scare, and she underwent two surgeries.

She said her perspective shifted: She decided to stop taking life for granted, grinding every day at work, and wondering if she'd ever have time to see the world.

"You know what?" Theriac, 53, a retired schoolteacher, recalled saying at the time to her husband. "Let's go for this big adventure and live life to the fullest."

That mission drove Theriac and her husband of almost 30 years, Stephen Theriac, 53, to purchase a cabin in March on a residential cruise ship called the Villa Vie Odyssey . They bought the cabin just one week after learning about it in a YouTube video.

"Sometimes, you just got to be adventurous and do it," Stephen, a retired deputy sheriff, told Business Insider.

Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie Residences, told BI in an email on Monday that Villa Vie Odyssey would embark "any day now." The 509-cabin residential cruise ship plans to circumnavigate the world every 3 ½ years, sailing to 147 countries and 425 destinations along the way.

Petterson declined to provide a specific sail date, saying the ship is still waiting for "the green light from DNV . It's impossible to say which day exactly." DNV is a certification and risk-assessment firm for the maritime industry.

Villa Vie Odyssey promises amenities, including three restaurants, five bars and lounges, a pool, and a golf simulator.

The ship's comprehensive itinerary is a dream for retirees like Angela and Stephen, who say cruising is a "big passion." Destinations include Australia; South America; Walvis Bay, Namibia; and Singapore.

Before moving to Nicaragua in 2011, the couple spent most of their lives in Florida and frequently took advantage of their proximity to some of the busiest cruise ports in the US .

They estimate they've boarded 50 cruises over the past 25 years, with the longest lasting 39 days.

"I really enjoy seeing new places, learning of new cultures, trying different food, and drinking different microbrews," Stephen said. "It's a great lifestyle."

The couple told BI they paid for the smallest, least-expensive cabin on the never-ending cruise , partly funded by an inheritance from Angela's mother.

(The couple said they signed a nondisclosure agreement and could not tell BI how much they paid for their accommodation. However, the cheapest dual-occupancy interior cabins start at about $100,000 with an additional $3,500 monthly fee.)

The Theriacs said they've already been to popular cruise destinations like the Caribbean and Mediterranean. They're excited to go further — New Zealand for Stephen and tropical destinations like Bali, Indonesia, and Fiji for Angela, a self-proclaimed "water girl."

They said they have plans to rent their home in Nicaragua to a close friend.

The Odyssey cabin features twin beds and a vanity

The couple started decorating their floating condo with pillows, artwork, and "personal touches emphasizing storage," Angela said. "Our room is our bedroom, and the ship is our home."

But there's a caveat — while they can spend their days aboard the ship, they're not yet allowed to stay overnight.

The never-ending cruise was initially scheduled to set sail in May from Belfast, Ireland, following Villa Vie's acquisition of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' more than 30-year-old Braemar vessel, now renamed Villa Vie Odyssey. However, Villa Vie has said issues like the aging ship's rudder stocks and recertification have since delayed its departure by three months.

Like many other would-be Villa Vie residents, the Theriacs flew to Belfast for the initial springtime departure date. Since then, the couple said they've been staying at hotels — including some a flight away in Liverpool, UK, where they say the nightly cost is cheaper — and spending time on other cruises.

Petterson said the Florida-based Villa Vie also provided residents with shuttles to and from the ship, food, drinks, excursions, and lodging — or a daily per diem for those who "choose to do their own thing."

But the couple has been patient and understanding of the delays — because, according to Stephen, "it's a now-or-never kind of thing."

"We're still in pretty good health and financially fine," Stephen said, reflecting on the sight of "80-year-olds getting off Princess ships in walkers." "I don't want to be that old and try to see the world. I want to do it now while I can still enjoy it."

Villa Vie would be the first ship of its kind in 22 years

Villa Vie isn't the only startup that has faced difficulties while trying to launch a never-ending voyage.

The residential-cruise industry has been plagued by issues since the inauguration of The World, the only ship of this kind, in 2002.

Startups trying to launch floating condominiums have since popped up as quickly as they've sunk — from Miray Cruises' Life at Sea Cruises , which shut down two weeks before it was supposed to embark in November, to Storylines , which has delayed its departure by seven years to 2026.

Miray's former CEO, Kendra Holmes, recently launched GlobeCruises, a concept similar to Life at Sea's three-year cruise , scheduled to sail in April.

GlobeCruises and Villa Vie are the only options vying to join The World in its extended voyage around the globe.
