Fabulous 2 week vacation with Wild China

My wife and I took a two week vacation to Hong Kong, Chengdu, Lijiang, Xi'an, and Beijing with Wild China. I could not be happier with the experience from start to finish. At the outset we had only a very basic idea of a few places we were interested in visiting, but our travel planner, Shiming Zuo, did an outstanding job of finding out about our interests and planning an appropriate itinerary. The entire process was quite seamless from contacting the company for an initial itinerary and estimate through planning and execution of the trip. As other reviewers have noted, the price is relatively high, about $1000 USD per day, but for us that included hotel, all domestic (within China) flights, breakfast, entrance fees for all attractions, a local guide, and car and driver. To me this was entirely worth the price as there is no way I could have planned this trip on my own. My wife and I are experienced travelers and have visited many countries where we don't speak the language. But the language (and culture) barrier for an English speaker visiting China is somewhat higher than traveling in countries where they speak Romance languages, and I think having someone with local knowledge plan the trip led to a far richer experience than we could have managed on our own. All of the hotels that Wild China booked for us were outstanding, and the guides were great. My wife and I are vegan and were pretty worried about our ability to find decent food, but our guides were very helpful at identifying appropriate restaurants and checking with restaurant staff to make sure the dishes we ordered were vegan. Of our guides, Alan Hui in Hong Kong, Alice Huang in Chengdu and Shelly Zhang in Lijiang were particularly wonderful, and I would highly recommend them. Shelly in particular was the perfect combination of knowledgable, fun, flexible, kind, interesting, and accommodating. We were truly sad to say goodbye to her at the airport, and I suspect my wife is already thinking about making another trip to Yunnan province to visit her again! Overall, I strongly recommend Wild China for both experienced and inexperienced travelers looking for a top of the line experience in China.

Hi Rallanah, Thank you so much for writing such a kind review. It makes our day when we hear that the entire process, from planning to the departure flight, went smoothly. Shiming, Alan, Alice, and Shelly are all pros at making any request look easy and we're delighted they orchestrated an authentic journey tailored to you. We hope you found some new favorite dishes along the way! And we love your story about Shelly...it's a bit of a tearjerker. It's beautiful when guides and guests transcend into dear friends - we hope you both continue to stay in touch and reunite! We wish you all the best, The WildChina Team

We traveled in May on a culinary tour with Wild China led by cookbook author, Fuchsia Dunlop. This was an amazing tour. Wild China had every detail well covered allowing us the opportunity to see some amazing highlights of China. Local guides were very good, BUT the real joy of this trip was learning about and experiencing the delicious, authentic Chinese cuisine with Fuchsia Dunlop. We LOVED this experience and highly recommend it to others. The only requirements are to go with a sense of adventure and an open palate. You will find each dish exquisite with Fuchsia indispensable as she orders and explains each dish. Our only hiccup in the trip was a change in one of the hotels from the itinerary. We were not informed of this change. The hotel while quite adequate did not meet the standards of the others. This likely could not be prevented, but was a bit of a let down. However other unexpected cultural experiences made up for this--Chinese foot reflexology and ear cleaning for those who cared to participate as well as a side-car tour of the hutongs. Our Wild China contact was Fann Fang. She was professional and patient to answer via email our many questions in preparation for this trip. This trip of a lifetime opened our minds to a completely different and amazing culture. We learned so much and loved every minute of this great trip with our wonderful group of eleven strangers who parted as friends.

Hi Pam! All of us at WildChina truly enjoyed reading this - thank you for taking the time to write this incredibly kind review. We're overjoyed to hear about your trip. Food is such a beautiful medium to understand a culture and forge friendships. The last bit about eleven strangers who parted as friends tugs at the heartstrings. It's stories like yours that inspire us each day. As much as we strive for perfection, some of the nuances, unfortunately, fall out of our control. It is great to hear that the wilder side of China (and your sense of adventure) overwrote some of the hiccups and left you with fond memories of your journey. Hearing "trip of a lifetime" is so rewarding as we strive to create life-changing experiences in everything we do. This is the highest praise we could ever hope to receive. Thank you so much. Sincerely, The WIldChina Team

I just got back from 4 weeks in China (2nd time using WildChina) and explored the remote areas of Xinjiang, Gansu, and Tibet. I don't think there's any other company that could have pulled together the permits needed and amazing itinerary that we had. Everything from the pre-planning to follow-up was perfectly executed, thanks to our Travel Designer Kendra! We'll be using WildChina again for our 2020 China trip.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to leave this amazing review. We're overjoyed that you had such a remarkable time in some of China's most remote and majestic areas. We're excited to hear where that 2020 trip will take you! Until then, The WildChina Team

Recently we had 20 days trip to Beijing, Dunhuang, Xi'an, Yunnan Province, Shanghai & Lhasa put together by Wild China. At every destination we were welcomed by a warm friendly & enthusiastic English speaking guide. The hotel accommodations were very good even in remote place like Dunhuang. The vehicle at every destination was excellent. The drivers were courteous, attentive & careful. Overall They did an outstanding job & we are extremely pleased with our trip.

Hi Angela, Thank you for taking the time out of your day to share your experience here! 20 days - Now that's a no small trip! We're overjoyed that you were able to experience so many different sides of this beautiful country. Until the next time, The WildChina Team

WildChina did an outstanding job of navigating, what is now a difficult to travel in area of China. Once you accept the intense and obvious police scrutiny particularly in Xinjiang Province. The area has much natural beauty and many interesting historical sites. My twin brother and I went for our 75th birthday and spent approximately 3+ weeks (March 2019) traveling bookending the trip with Beijing and Shanghai. We had both been to China several times, but not to Gansu Provience or Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Wild China arranged our guides, drivers, accommodations and permits. We made dumpling in Beijing; noodles in Lanzhou, and had great barbecue in Hoten. We rode camels In Dunhuang (Minsha Sand Dunes) and in the Taklamakan Desert, and horses near the Matisi Grottoes (Sunan) Zhangye , and had a goatskin raft ride on the Yellow River in Lanzhou. We visited many buddhist caves and grottoes, Including Matisi Grottoes (Zhangye: Mogao Grottoes (Dunhuang); Kizil 1,000 Buddha Caves (Kuqa). Saw extroiodanry natural beauty. Kudos to Wild China. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a kind review. We're absolutely honored that you chose to visit China again for such a special milestone. We're incredibly proud of our designers and guides for pulling off this amazing adventure for you both, we'll pass along your glowing review to your designer and guides. Yours, The WildChina Team

This trip -- our second with WildChina -- took us to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Guilin, and the Yunnan Province. At each stop, we were greeted by a friendly, informative, English speaking guide who looked after us like we were family. With little more than a phone number, our Guangzhou guide managed to locate my wife's distant cousins and locate the homes where her grandparents lived 100 years ago -- and arranged a reunion lunch she'll never forget. The hotels were amazing -- even in the more remote parts of Yunnan -- and the food was delicious. We enjoyed marvelous mountain hikes, visits to incredible temples, and so much more!

Hi Paul, Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience, it means the world to us. We're thankful to have been able to help create your China adventure. We're overjoyed to hear about your trip. The story of finding your cousins and visiting your grandmother's home has been making waves across our headquarters. It is an absolutely beautiful and heartfelt story - we feel lucky to have helped. We wish you all the best! The WildChina Team

Episode 31: Educating Girls of Rural China with Ching Tien

For this episode we’re delving into the mission of EGRC (Educating Girls of Rural China), an NGO supporting the educational pursuits of girls in China’s underprivileged regions. Our guest is the founder of EGRC, Ching Tien, who shares with us her personal story of growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution. Her path strays from an educated family background and setting, to relocation in Gansu, the poorest province in China at the time, where she worked in a factory. Several decades later, Ching found herself at a children’s concert in Vancouver, thinking of the girls she bumped shoulders with back in Gansu, and the many worldly opportunities they were missing out on. The first seedlings of EGRC were thence planted, and today, 18 years later, over 2,000 girls in China have benefited from the NGO born of that dream.   ----- For a more detailed write-up on this episode, including links to resources mentioned, please visit our website: wildchina.com

WildChina founder Mei Zhang: China’s custom travel is entering a new stage

Shifting focus from “upscale” to “experience”.

ChinaTravelNews, Ariel Wang  -  As Chinese travelers’ confidence comes back with China relaxing travel restrictions, experiential luxury travel company WildChina will re-launch small-group outbound tours in the coming months. Company founder and chairlady Mei Zhang believes that China’s custom travel is set to enter a new stage.

Graduated from Harvard Business School in 1996, Ms. Zhang founded Beijing-based WildChina in 2000 after four years with McKinsey. Under her leadership, WildChina survived various incidents depressing global economy – from 911 to SARS, the global financial crisis and then the Covid-19 pandemic. As China reopens, how will she lead the team to scale new heights?

wildchina travel

Adapting to constant changes

Throughout the pandemic in the past three years, Ms. Zhang’s perception of the impact had been turned upside down, like many other travel operators. At first, the WildChina team was still optimistic, expecting that Covid-19 would end soon and everything would be back to normal. But as Covid-19 took hold globally and governments frequently adjusted quarantine measures, travel companies were under tremendous pressure.

“(During the pandemic), it took three times as much effort to earn a dollar. Customers booked and canceled again and again, which generated heavy workloads for operators and posed significant challenges to company executives and the whole team,” she said.

WildChina’s bread-and-butter inbound business almost ground to a halt with no leisure visitors coming to China during the pandemic. The strategy of turning to the domestic market didn’t pay off as that market was also shrinking, largely due to tightened quarantine measures restricting cross-provincial tours limiting travel to short excursions within cities.

wildchina travel

To address these challenges, the company adjusted every business line, from WildChina Leisure (private custom travel) to WildChina Corporate (meetings and events), WildChina Education (scholastic programs), WildChina Academy (workshops) and WildChina Studio (a space for cultural projects).

“It’s hard to define the share of each business line. It’s meaningless. Adapting to changes is what we have learned in the past three years. And we are finally seeing the dawn,” she said.

Stopping short of sharing actual business performance figures, she said the company had organized 100 lectures inviting executives of international travel agencies to share how they led their teams to survive the crisis.

In 2022, Ms. Zhang started to share the concept of “organic travel” in Xiaohongshu, China's Instagram-like platform, since attracting over half a million followers.

Corporate and education travel first to recover

As China reopens, Zhang believes that demand for corporate and education travel will surge. Corporate travelers will be eager to travel as companies rush to attend meetings and events to seek more development opportunities.

WildChina’s education travel programs take children closer to nature and help them master skills through playing, which she believes is a growing trend.

The company is also strengthening cooperation with governments to promote cultural projects like WildChina Studio Sonyang, which is located in the Songyang county in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. It was designed to help the local government in their tourism development.

The concept of WildChina Studio, “ Lvxing · Shè ” (meaning travel community in Chinese), is to create spaces where travelers and locals gather to communicate and share views as a community. The meaning of shè in Chinese is rich – it refer to places where people with common interests converge to exchange ideas, or in more ancient times, altars for offering sacrifices to the god of the soil to foster spiritual connection.

Ms. Zhang suggested that local governments should further explore such concepts to tap into the history and culture of each region, especially their traditions and customs.

Places like Songyang have no iconic scenic spots, but she thought this was an advantage as such places give people time and space to discover new experiences. This can shift travelers’ minds, she added.

As for inbound and outbound leisure travel, she thinks it will take at least a year to recover due to uncertainties in policies and suppliers need time to deliver services.

Entering a new stage shifting from “upscale” to “experience”

Compared with other custom travel brands, WildChina’s advantage lies in the design of its products, integrating high-end accommodations with rich experiences for travelers to relax both physically and mentally.

Ms. Zhang uses the word “organic” instead of “upscale” to describe custom travel. WildChina hopes to simplify the travel process and leave more time for travelers to get involved in local life. At night, travelers can stay in luxury hotels, but during the day, they should be willing to walk or go hiking to explore the surroundings.

She took the Galápagos Islands as an example. Located 900 kilometers west of continental Ecuador, the islands are known for rich endemic species that were studied by Charles Darwin. “If you are not willing to make the journey to these islands, you can’t see these unique creatures, and you lose the opportunities to find joy from it.”

After 10 years of development, China’s luxury custom travel industry is set to enter a new stage, she observed. For the past 10 years, Chinese travelers were most enthusiastic about luxury hotels and premium restaurants. They contributed a lot to operators’ financial performances. But now, it’s time for travelers to explore the journeys by themselves. “We are entering a new stage soon.”

Ms. Zhang is also concerned about the environment. While many operators are making great efforts to promote local community development, environmental protection can be neglected along the way. For instance, when disposable necessities such as toothbrushes, plastic cups and toiletries are provided for the convenience of travelers.

She encouraged more to speak up about this as global warming is getting dire, and both operators and travelers should contribute to the solutions. “The positive side is that China’s young generations are more concerned about the environment and willing to take action to protect it.”

Getting ready to restart

With China’s borders reopening, WildChina is preparing to resume inbound business.

The company is reconnecting with local guides, drivers and hotel operators to prepare for surging demand. Ms. Zhang expected the market to recover within six to 12 months.

As for outbound travel, the pandemic previously shortened the booking window from six months right down to the last minute, but travelers should now expect to book six months in advance again.

Similarly, Chinese consumers seeking luxury custom travel will find that many hotels, restaurants and guides have been booked out in advance, so it’ll take a longer lead time to secure international travel bookings, she said.

However, she is still optimistic about the potential of Chinese travelers’ outbound demand. WildChina has recently launched a series of small-group outbound journeys focusing on “organic travel” destinations around the world. The first group will set out for Japan in April.

“I hope that travelers will be willing to put more energy into the journey, so that they can harvest more. That’s the real meaning of organic travel,” Ms. Zhang added.

During summer there are boats from Kazan , Samara and other destinations on the Volga River.

By train [ edit ]

The train takes you here from Moscow (from Kazanskaya train station) in approximately 16 hours or from Volgograd in about 20 hours. Ulyanovsk Main Station is located 6 km from the city center.

Get around [ edit ]

Ulyanovsk has an extensive public transportation network that includes buses, trolleys, and trams. It is very affordable, but congested and may be quite confusing. You won't find any route maps or schedules, neither at bus stops nor in buses. Fee collectors usually don't speak English. Express buses and semi-private van routes are more comfortable and more expensive. Taxis are not expensive, and that's your best bet if you want to get somewhere (relatively) quickly, in (relative) comfort (almost all cars are old Russian ladas or over 10 year old non-Russian cars), and without much hassle. They are also most likely to have English speaking drivers (one in 1000) and superloud Russian pop music.

Getting between the banks of the Volga is a problem. There is a two lane bridge connecting the banks and it's nearly always congested, so if you're unlucky, it can take a couple of hours. Most locals avoid going over the bridge if they can. A four-lane bridge was planned to relieve these problems.

History of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk in the 17th-19th centuries.

In 1648, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the fortress of Sinbirsk was founded on the right bank of the Volga River in order to protect the eastern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes (Nogai Tatars), as well as to colonize the Volga region.

In the fall of 1670, Sinbirsk was unsuccessfully besieged by the army of Stepan Razin - the Don Cossack, who was the leader of the 1670-1671 uprising, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. In 1678, 1,579 people lived in Sinbirsk.

In 1729, the coat of arms of Sinbirsk was approved - a white pillar topped with a golden crown in the azure field. In 1780, Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk. In 1793, 13,317 people lived in this town.

In 1812, Ivan Goncharov, a famous Russian novelist and critic, was born in Simbirsk. In 1836, Emperor Nicholas I visited Simbirsk and made a lot of orders for the construction of new buildings in the town, especially in its central part. In 1840, the Simbirsk Theological Seminary was opened.

More Historical Facts…

In 1845, a monument to Nikolay Karamzin (1766-1826) was opened - the author of one of the first generalizing works on the history of Russia and a reformer of the Russian literary language, who was born near Simbirsk. Today, this monument erected in Karamzin Public Garden is one of the symbols of Ulyanovsk. In 1848, one of the first libraries in the Volga region was opened in this town - the Karamzin Public Library.

In the summer of 1864, a terrible fire occurred in Simbirsk, which lasted 9 days. Only one fourth of the town buildings survived. In 1867, the merchant Yurgens opened the first bookstore in Simbirsk. In 1870, the future “leader of the world revolution” Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky, a prominent Russian politician and statesman, was born here in 1881. According to the 1897 census, 43.3 thousand people lived in Simbirsk.

Ulyanovsk in the first half of the 20th century

From 1908 to 1912, Igor Kurchatov, the future creator of the Soviet atomic bomb, lived in Simbirsk with his parents and studied at the local gymnasium. In 1916, the construction of the Imperial Bridge over the Volga River was completed in Simbirsk. With a length of 2,089 meters, it was the longest bridge in the Russian Empire at that time.

After the First World War and the Russian Civil War, the city’s industry was in ruin. During the war years, not a single building was constructed in Simbirsk, street lighting disappeared, boulevards and parks fell into disrepair, up to a hundred residential buildings were destroyed.

On May 9, 1924, in connection with the death of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk, and Simbirsk Governorate - into Ulyanovsk Governorate. Other proposed options for the new name of the city were such as “Lenin”, “Leninsk”, “Ilyich”.

By the end of the 1930s, almost all churches in Ulyanovsk were destroyed or used for other purposes. On the eve of the Second World War, Ulyanovsk was a provincial city with a population of about 110 thousand people. There were no large industrial enterprises, with the exception of the 3rd State Plant named after Volodarsky (Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant) - one of the oldest defense enterprises in Russia, specializing in the production of cartridges for rifled weapons.

During the Second World War, Ulyanovsk became the place of evacuation of 17 industrial enterprises from the occupied regions and the front line. The Minsk Tank School, renamed the 2nd Ulyanovsk Tank School, was relocated from Minsk, the Mogilev Military Infantry School, which became the Ulyanovsk Military Infantry School, was relocated from Mogilev. In 1942, a medical institute evacuated from Voronezh began to work in Ulyanovsk.

From October 1941 to August 1943, the Moscow Patriarchate was in evacuation in Ulyanovsk, headed by Metropolitan Sergius. From 1942 to 1945, Andrei Sakharov, the future creator of the hydrogen bomb, academician and human rights activist worked at the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant.

On January 19, 1943, Ulyanovsk became the center of the newly formed Ulyanovsk Oblast. From the second half of 1941 to the beginning of 1942, the population of Ulyanovsk, due to the evacuees, doubled and amounted to more than 200 thousand people. By 1945, as a result of re-evacuation, it decreased by 50 thousand and amounted to 152 thousand people.

Ulyanovsk after the Second World War

In the post-war period, Ulyanovsk became an industrial city. In 1953, during the construction of the Volga cascade of hydroelectric power plants, part of Ulyanovsk was included in the flooding zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. In 1957, the Ulyanovsk airport was built. Since the 1960s, thanks to the high rates of housing and industrial construction, Ulyanovsk began to grow rapidly both in area and in population. On May 5, 1967, the 300,000th resident of the city was born.

In the 1969-1970s, in honor of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin, the historical center of Ulyanovsk was built up with modern buildings: the hotel “Sovetskaya”, the House of Artists, the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, the hotel “Venets”, the new railway station Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the new river station, the central airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the central department store, the central bus station, the Palace of Pioneers, the park “Friendship of Peoples”, etc.

With the construction of the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, Ulyanovsk became one of the main tourist centers of the USSR, after Moscow and Leningrad. The city was not closed to foreigners, which distinguished it from many other industrial regional centers, but foreign tourists were not allowed to deviate from the route. On June 1, 1973, the 400,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. On April 16, 1982, the population of Ulyanovsk exceeded 500 thousand people.

On June 5, 1983, in Ulyanovsk, the river cruise ship “Alexander Suvorov” crashed into the railway bridge across the Volga (the Imperial Bridge). By mistake of the crew, the ship tried to pass under the non-navigable span of the bridge. As a result, more than 170 people died. The large number of casualties is explained by the fact that at the time of the collision, most of the passengers were in the movie theater and on the dance floor on the upper deck, which was completely destroyed by the collision with the bridge girder.

On July 17, 1987, the 600,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. The city’s tourist significance declined sharply after the collapse of the USSR. In 1998, Ulyanovsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.

In the 2000s, there was a discussion about the reverse renaming of the city to Simbirsk, but the residents of Ulyanovsk for the most part did not support this proposal. In 2009, the arches of the old railway bridge were replaced. On November 24, 2009, the Presidential Bridge across the Volga was opened, the second longest in Russia, with a length of about 6 kilometers.

Ulyanovsk - Features

From 1648 to 1780, the name of Ulyanovsk was Sinbirsk, and from 1780 to 1924 - Simbirsk. This name was given to the town by its founder, Bogdan Khitrovo, after the name of the settlement of Sinbir (named after the Bulgarian prince Sinbir), the remains of which were located nearby. In 1924, after the death of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk.

Ulyanovsk is located in a forest-steppe zone on the Volga Upland, on both banks of the Volga River (Kuybyshev Reservoir). The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in February is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.2 degrees Celsius. A characteristic feature of Ulyanovsk is the constant winds blowing from the Volga.

This city is a major transport point, lying between central Russia and the Urals. Neighboring regional centers are three to five hours away by car. There are two international airports near the city - Ulyanovsk-Central (ULV) and Ulyanovsk-Vostochny (ULY).

The banks of the Volga in Ulyanovsk are connected by two bridges. The old railway bridge was officially opened in 1916 and was named “Imperial of His Majesty Nicholas II”. In 1917, it was renamed Freedom Bridge. In 2009, it again began to be called “Imperial Bridge”. The new bridge (also called “Presidential Bridge”) was commissioned on November 26, 2009.

Public transport is represented by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and minibuses. In Ulyanovsk tram lines are located exclusively in the right-bank part of the city and trolleybus lines are in the left-bank part. In the last years of the USSR, it was planned to build a subway in Ulyanovsk.

It is a multi-ethnic city. The ethnic composition according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census: Russians (77.65%), Tatars (12.64%), Chuvash (5.02%), Mordovians (1.4%). The economy of the city is based on the enterprises of the automotive industry, engine building, aircraft building, instrument making, machine building, and metalworking.

Ulyanovsk has a high potential for the development of the tourism industry. The tourist image of Ulyanovsk as “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is supplemented with some new ones now: “Russian provincial town of the 19th century”, “Homeland of Oblomov”, “Architectural Museum in the Open Air”.

The City Day of Ulyanovsk is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in September.
