Last Updated on: Mar 31, 2023

About the Blog: The erstwhile capital of the Bundelas, Orchha is a laid back town in Madhya Pradesh. Offering a rare glimpse into the history, Orchha boasts of temples, forts, palaces and historic monuments. Read our blog to know more about Orchha, the places to visit in Orchha, how to reach and where to stay in Orchha. Hoping this Orchha Travel Guide will help you plan your trip and itinerary to this small, but beautiful historic town in India.

This was perhaps one of the best sunsets we have witnessed in a long time to come. The winter sun was setting behind the Chhatris of Orchha while we watched the dramatic colours of the sky from the banks of the Betwa River. To be honest, I did not have huge expectations from Orchha after our visit to Khajuraho. We came from Khajuraho to Orchha with an open mind to enjoy whatever came our way. While we were researching for places to visit in Orchha, we realized how much this small town in Madhya Pradesh had to offer. And after exploring Orchha, we simply fell in love with this underrated destination in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.

Orchha has an old-world charm. Located on the banks of the Betwa River, this small agricultural town of India has some of the most beautiful architectural gems in India. While the town is centered around the Ram Raja Temple, the town and its surrounding countryside are dotted with several monuments, forts, temples and cenotaphs. This 500 years old town is a place rich in history and heritage – a place that was going to become one of my favourites.

Orchha – A Brief History

Orchha was once the capital of a flourishing kingdom ruled by the Bundela Kings. The State was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Chief Rudra Pratap Singh. He also shifted his capital from Garh Kundar to Orchha on the banks of River Betwa. The site of the new town was a better place to fortify against the Mughal attacks.  The Bundelas were the descendants of Gaharwar Rajputs of Varanasi .

After almost a decade, Bir Singh Deo (1605 – 1627) became the King of Orchha and was perhaps one of the greatest Bundela Kings of Orchha. The state reached its zenith in political power and splendor in architecture during his reign. He had built several forts, palaces and monuments, not only at Orchha, but also at Datia and Jhansi. He had also built several temples at Mathura and Varanasi and is one of the major contributors of spreading Bundeli architecture to the Northern parts of India.

Orchha remained the capital of the Bundela Dynasty from 1531 to 1783. Later the capital was shifted to Tikamgarh.

During British rule, the area became a part of Bundelkhand Agency. After the independence of India, Vir Singh, the then king, merged his state with the Indian Union on January 1, 1950. The district became a part of Vindhya Pradesh state, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

Orchha Trip

We visited Orchha during the winter months of January. Our Madhya Pradesh trip started with Gwalior and Morena . After that we visited Khajuraho before arriving at Orchha. Once we landed at Orchha, it seemed like any other small town of India. But once we were exploring the place, we were totally engrossed with the chilled-out vibes of the place. We spent two days in Orchha and explored most of the attractions in the place.

Orchha literally means hidden. There are a lot of interesting places to visit in Orchha, especially for history enthusiasts. Even if you are not into history, the magnificence of the place will definitely draw you in. So here is a quick Orchha travel guide to help you plan your trip and make most of your time in Orchha.

How to Reach Orchha?

Orchha is located in the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh. The nearest major railway station from Orchha is in Jhansi, around 20 km away and takes about 30 minutes to reach. To get to Orchha, you have to reach Jhansi first.

Jhansi is one of the major railway stations of Central India and is well connected to all the major cities of the country. From Delhi, it is about five to six hours of train journey. However, you should get your tickets well in advance.

If you are flying in, the nearest airport is Gwalior Airport, 130 km away. From Gwalior, you can either take a train to Jhansi and then reach Orchha, or take a private cab to reach Orchha directly. Buses are also available from Gwalior to Orchha.

Since we were coming from Khajuraho, we took a train from Khajuraho to Jhansi and then took a cab to Orchha.

How to reach Orchha from Jhansi?

You can take a private auto or cab from Jhansi to Orchha. A private cab will probably cost you around INR 500. Buses are also available from Jhansi bus stand to Orchha.

Getting Around Orchha

Orchha is a fairly small place and you can easily walk around to visit most of the attractions.

You can also get rickshaws and auto rickshaws to roam around the city. A short ride within the city will probably cost you INR 100 to 200.

You can also rent bicycles and bikes (scooty as well) in Orchha and explore the place.

Orchha Fort, Madhya Pradesh - Places to Visit in Orchha

Now that you have reached this beautiful town, let us find the places to visit in Orchha. Apart from Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary, the entire town is within a radius of 5 km and you can easily plan your trip in 2 days. There are monuments scattered everywhere across the small town. Most of these are a mixture of Bundeli and Muslim architecture. There are also fortified gates or Darwazas marking the limits of the town.

Darwaza or gates in Orchha

While you can definitely jump from one monument to the other, do the touristy thing of taking insta-worthy photographs, the best way to explore Orchha is to savour the place. While you think about how many days you want to spend in Orchha, here is a list of the must visit places in Orchha.

1. Orchha Fort Complex – Amazing Places to visit in Orchha

Orchha Fort Complex

The Orchha Fort Complex is perhaps the grandest structure in Orchha town. This is one place that you will not miss even if you wanted to. The Orchha Fort Complex dominates the skyline of the town containing a large number of monuments that includes palaces, gateways, gardens, stables, temples and pavilions.

Orchha Fort Complex Madhya Pradesh

The fort is protected by a thick wall and has four main palaces – Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal and several other smaller, but impressive structures. The Sheesh Mahal that has now been converted into a boutique hotel. The Betwa River acts as a moat on one side having an arched bridge connecting over the river. Various structures in the complex have been built at different times by various rulers, something that is seen in most of the historic monuments of India. There are plenty of intricate archways, colourfully painted murals, chambers and passageways in the huge Orchha Fort Complex.

Walking around the grounds of the palace area is free. However, if you want to enter Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and some other monuments, there is an entry fee.

This is the first place you enter after getting the tickets. This part of the complex was built by Madhukar Shah in the seventeenth century. The design has been inspired by the Mughal courts, the hall was used by the King to meet the public and deal with matters of administration and justice.

The main highlight of this hall are the beautiful paintings on the vaulted ceilings and the walls. Just look up and you will see some amazing examples of Bundela style paintings.

Raja Mahal at Orchha Fort - Places to Visit in Orchha

Once leaving Diwan-e-Am, you will enter the Raja Mahal, or the King’s Palace. The construction of Raja Mahal was started in 1531 by Bharti Chand and it served as his private residence. The inner courtyard, perfectly square in shape, was the first part of the palace to be built. The rooms around the courtyard served as private quarters for the royal family. You will see these rooms are painted in Bundela style.

Raja Mahal at Orchha Fort Complex - Places to Visit in Orchha

The main highlight of the Raja Mahal are perhaps the vibrant Bundela styled paintings in the six rooms around the courtyard. There are paintings of the Avatars of Vishnu as well as episodes of Ramayana. Other beautiful paintings are found on the wall as well.

There is a second courtyard at the far side and the rooms there also have several beautiful and unique paintings. It is difficult to see the paintings first, but once your eyes are used to the light you will see how impressive the paintings are.

There is another interesting painting of an elephant that is actually made up of 12 women. See it below.

Another rectangular courtyard was added by Madhukar Shah, brother and successor of Bharti Chand. This time, the architectural style was slightly different, perhaps influenced by Mughal architecture. That is why you will see that there are different types of arches at Raja Mahal.

There are staircases to take you to the upper levels and there are five storeys in total. From the upper levels you can look down at the courtyard and the other fort complex surrounding you. It is from here, you get a view of the towering Chaturbhuj Temple and the Cenotaphs.

Once you have explored and head out of the Raja Mahal, climb up a few steps to reach the Jahangir Mahal.

Jahangir Mahal

Jehangir Mahal at Orchha Fort

Jahangir Mahal is perhaps architecturally the most impressive building in the Orchha Fort Complex. It was built in 1610 having a single huge courtyard. The architecture of Jahangir Mahal has both Hindu and Islamic elements.

Jahangir Mahal was built by King Bir Singh Deo to commemorate the visit of emperor Jahangir to Orchha. The place seems to have been used as a guest house and for entertainment. The main entrance was decorated with two stone carved elephants with a bell. The palace has three storeys with 236 chambers.

You can climb up to the upper levels and marvel at the cupolas, domes, pavilions, balconies and the ornate windows. Look around and you will only find brilliance and beauty. From the upper levels you will also get a view of the other buildings and if you look a little far, the Betwa river will also be seen.

Other Structures

Within the Orchha Fort Complex, there are several other structures. One of the interesting structures is the Unth Khana or the camel stable.

A short distance from here is the Rai Praveen Mahal. This was built in the sixteenth century and is named after Rai Praveen, a famous courtesan known for her beauty. The upper levels of the buildings have paintings of Rai Praveen.

2. Chaturbhuj Temple – Places to visit in Orchha

Chaturbhuj temple dominating the skyline of Orchha

While the Orchha Fort is no doubt fascinating, it is the Chaturbhuj Temple that steals the show. Located right in the heart of Orchha, the temple dominates not only the skyline, but also the heart of the town. Built on a high plinth, with impressive spires of various sizes that seem to reach out to the sky. The temple is mammoth, huge and magnificent.

There is an interesting story behind this temple. Historically, the construction of the temple started in 1558 by Madhukar Shah for his Queen Rani Ganesh Kunwari. The construction of the temple was completed by his son Bir Singh Deo.

Legend of the Queen

Legend says that one night Rani Ganesh Kunwari was a devout follower of Lord Rama. One night, she had a divine dream from Lord Rama, instructing her to build a temple for him. The queen was instructed to visit Ayodhya and bring the idol of Rama with her to Orchha. The only condition was that Lord Rama was to be brought from Ayodhya to the temple in one go. Once he was laid down, he would not move from the place.

The queen, with all her devotion went to Ayodhya and brought an idol of Lord Rama with her to Ayodhya. However, the construction of the temple was not yet completed (which is quite understandable) and so the idol was placed at the Rani Mahal, adjacent to the main palace. After the construction of the temple was completed, several attempts were made to move the idol of Lord Rama to the new temple. But the Lord simply refused to move!

Apparently Lord Rama remained in the Rani Mahal itself leaving the Chaturbhuj Temple vacant. The Rani Mahal was converted to Ram Raja Temple and the Rama idol is actively worshiped there even till date.

The Chaturbhuj Temple now houses the idol of Radha-Krishna.

Interiors of the Temple

Interior of the Chaturbhuj temple at Orchha

The interior of the temple is 105m high and is as impressive and elegant as its exteriors. Today the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Chaturbhuj, or the one having four arms. Architecturally, the temple is built in a cross shape representing the four arms of Vishnu.

Having explored the ground levels, you can go up to the upper galleries of the temple. The winding staircases are a bit dark and after climbing some flight of steps with crumbling masonry, you will reach the roof of the Chaturbhuj Temple. The views are, as usual, awesome; with all the major and smaller monuments of Orchha in front of you.

3. Ram Raja Temple – Places to Visit in Orchha

If the Orchha Fort speaks of architectural brilliance and the Chaturbhuj Temple the magnificence of Orchha, then Ram Raja Temple is undoubtedly the heart of Orchha. Ram Raha temple is one of the interesting places to visit in Orchha.

Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is the only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshiped as a king and not as a God. It is here you will see that police are designated to guard the temple and they give daily gun salutes to the deity. It is absolutely fascinating.

Ram Raja Temple at Orchha Madhya Pradesh

The temple does not look like any other temple. It is a rectangular building with four towers. It is because Ram Raja Temple is originally the Rani Mahal or the palace of Queen Gansh Kunwari. Just go through the local legend about the Chaturbhuj Temple in the section above to know more about it.

One of the best times to visit Ram Raja Temple is during Ram Navami when local musicians from neighbouring villages gather to sing songs and hymns in praise of Lord Ram.

Ram Raja Temple Timings: 8.00am to 12.30pm and 1.00pm to 8.00pm

4. Laxmi Narayan Temple

Laxmi Narayan Temple Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Located on a hilltop about 1 km from the Orchha town, what catches attention in Laxmi Narayan Temple is its unique architecture. The building has a blend of temple and fort architecture, something I have not seen in a single building. The fortified outer walls of the temple is square and is flanked by octagonal towers. The inner sanctuary is however triangular. Indeed, a unique architecture. And there is a huge high domed octagonal tower above the inner sanctuary.

Laxmi Narayan Temple - places to visit in Orchha

The exterior of the building was undoubtedly impressive. But what captivated me entirely was its interiors. The interiors have some very beautiful murals and paintings on the walls and ceilings. Episodes of Ramayana, Mahabharata and even episodes from Indian history were painted. There are also paintings depicting scenes of the 1857 uprising.

Laxmi Narayan Temple is absolutely beautiful. The walk of 30 minutes from the Chaturbhuj Temple was completely worth it.

5. Chhatris, the Royal Cenotaphs of Orchha

Chhatris or Royal Cenotaphs of Orchha Madhya Pradesh

The Chhatris of Orchha or the royal cenotaphs are one of my favourite places to visit in Orchha. Constructed in the honor of the rulers of Orchha on the banks of Betwa River, the Chhatris are the highlight of Orchha. There are 15 Chhatris in total of the Bundela kings and their families.

These Chhatris are the memorials and have been built on the spot where the royals were cremated. The monolithic Chhatri dedicated to Raja Bir Singh Deo is one of the finest among the rest.

The entrance of the chhatris faces the River Betwa. A few meters away is the significantly smaller chattri of Kirpa Ram Gaur, who was the military commander during the time of King Bir Singh Deo. This is the only Chhatri here that belongs to someone not from the royal family.

Chhatris of Bhagwant Singh and Jaswant Singh at Orchha

The Chhatris are a wonderful set of monuments and also one of the best places to watch the sunset in Orchha. The best place to watch the sunset is from the narrow bridge near the Chhatris. From there you can see the falling rays of the sun on the monuments giving them a golden hue. You can also go on the other bank of Betwa River for a great sunset view.

Entry Ticket: The entry to the Chhatris is included in the ticket for the Orchha Fort Complex. So keep the ticket properly.

A Few More Things to Do in Orchha

1. watch the sound and light show.

The Sound and Light show takes place in the courtyard of Orchha Fort Complex. The show is organized every evening for one hour both in English and Hindi language. The Sound and Light Show in Orchha brings to life the 500 years old history of the place. It narrates the discovery of Orchha, the rise and fall of kings, battles and romances and various stories of the royal household. It also throws an insight into the Bundelkhandi architecture, paintings and culture.

If you are fond of Sound and Light shows, then Orchha Sound and Light Show should definitely be on your list.

2. Go for River Rafting at Betwa River

Sunset view by River Betwa at the Chhatris of Orchha

If you are looking for adventure, then go for river rafting at the Betwa River. The rafting begins at Kanchan Ghat and takes place at a 3.5 km stretch along the Orchha town to Shiv Ghat. The river is generally calm, but there are a few rapids (Grade I/II). There is another option for 6 km of rafting.

Once you start from the Kanchan Ghat, you will see the Chhatris or Cenotaphs first. After crossing the low lying Orchha Bridge, you will come across the Chaturbhuj Temple and several smaller temples. Rafting at Betwa combines adventure with history as you watch the historic monuments of Orchha while tackling the rapids. It is undoubtedly a wonderful experience.

3. Jungle Safari at Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary

Lying on the banks of River Betwa, Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across an area of 45 square kilometers. While you can spot Chital, Sambar deer, Nilgai and several reptiles inside the sanctuary, the place is more known for its birds. Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to as many as 100 species of birds. This is a good place for nature hiking and walks.

Amp up the cultural angle by planning your trip to coincide with celebrations like Ram Navami or the Chhatris Festival.

Get A Taste of the City

Connoisseurs of food can experiment with the legendary flavours of Bundelkhandi cuisine. The town’s street food stalls and local eateries serve traditional dishes that have been loved for generations. Make time to taste  poha , a savoury rice dish cooked with spices and garnished with crunchy  sev .  Jalebis , the sweet spirals of deep-fried dough soaked in sugar syrup, are the perfect  dessert  to satisfy the sweet tooth. Don’t miss  Bhutte ki Kees,  made with grated corn cooked in  ghee  with aromatic spices like cumin and mustard seeds, a delightful blend of textures and flavours that reflect the essence of Bundelkhandi cuisine. For an authentic experience, join a local family for a traditional meal. Dig into fragrant curries, lentil preparations, and freshly baked bread and enjoy the warm hospitality that is the cornerstone of Orchha’s culture.

Cenotaphs river: Scenes of sublime in Orchha

Orchha is a playground of endless visual delights for the photo enthusiast. Head to the cenotaphs along the riverbank for a breathtaking vista that has stood still for centuries. The best time to capture this surreal scene is at sunrise or sunset. Be spellbound by the play of light and shadows as it enhances the finesse of ancient craftsmanship on exquisite architecture. Be prepared to spend a few hours reflecting shots from the mirrored waters of the Betwa River. It’s an enchanting canvas to captivate both amateur and professional photographers.

Feel time stand still as you return to the serenity of the riverbanks. Settle down on the smooth rocks, listening to the soothing sound of the flowing Betwa and the rustle of the leaves. The cenotaphs in front of you bear testimony to an era of royalty. A sense of peace envelops you, away from the din of modern life in busy cities. Hum a song, sink into the symphony as the past flows into the present, creating memories that are as timeless as the town itself.

Jahangir Mahal is a palace that was exclusively built by Bir Singh Deo in 1605 to humor the Mughal emperor Jahangir who was a guest of the Maharaja for one night only. The palace is built in four levels with elegant architectural features of both Muslim and Rajput architecture. Its layout is a symmetrical square built in the inner courtyard of the fort and has eight large domes. It has a plethora of rooms with arcaded openings, projecting platforms and windows with lattice design work. The roof above top floor of this Mahal is accessed through a steep stairway. It provides picture perfect views of the temples and the Betwa River outside the fort complex.

Orchha could make towns many times its size green with jealousy. At heart, Orchha is nothing but a tiny, agricultural village that shouldn't really be of much interest to anyone, but it was blessed by history: for nearly 300 years it was one of the most important urban areas in this part of India. This has left the small town with a supreme display of Mughal-influenced Rajput architecture in the shape of spectacular palaces, temples and royal chhatris (cenotaphs). And thanks to an important temple dedicated to Rama, it's also a major pilgrimage and spiritual centre. Combine these with a laid-back atmosphere, some fabulous accommodation options, as well as opportunities to enjoy the surrounding pastoral countryside, with walking, cycling and rafting all on the agenda, and you'll understand why Orchha can be considered one of the highlights of Madhya Pradesh.

Beguiling temples, monuments lost in history and an abundance of folklore make Orchha a jewel in the crown of the state of Madhya Pradesh. This small, pastoral town is popularly known as Raja Ram's kingdom, maybe the only place in the country where Lord Rama is revered as a beloved king and not just a god. Boasting an amazing blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture dating back to the 16th century, Orchha was at the heart of many prominent royal dynasties for nearly 300 years. This history lives on in the splendid monuments that punctuate the quaint town shrouded in mystery and sitting by the softly flowing Betwa river. Add to this the sweet smell of custard apples permeating the air, and you may start to unravel the mesmeric charm of this “hidden place” (the meaning of Orchha).

At the heart of Orchha's heritage is the Orchha Fort complex. Situated on an island in the Betwa, this complex is a maze of palaces, forts and temples. Divided into three parts: Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal and Sheesh Mahal, the fort hides within it secret passages, exquisite murals and resplendent residential quarters of kings and queens. Orchha was established as the capital of the powerful Bundelkhand empire by king Rudra Pratap Singh in 1501 AD and then ruled by several kings. Interestingly, here the Betwa splits into seven channels, also known as Satdhara. Legend says that this is in honour of the seven erstwhile rulers of Orchha. Also honouring its royals are the intricately carved chhatris or cenotaphs, which are iconic of the city itself.

Orchha: Discover the Rich History of the Riverside Town

Orchha Tourist Places | Madhya Pradesh ( MP ) Tourism

Settled on a quiet and serene landscape, Orchha is a dreamy 500 years old town with dominating stone structures that command the horizon of the town. To the west is the fort, built on an island on the calm Betwa River, separated by a bridge from the main cluster of temples to the east. A row of cenotaphs stands on the banks of the river in the south. Visit and experience the never-ending opulence of the ancient town.

The Orchha Chattris

The town is less crowded and is best explored on a bicycle. Hire a cycle and ride along its quiet roads by the Betwa River on Kanchan Ghat. Take a 15 minutes' walk in the serenity while the sunbeams lighten the 14 Chattris of the Bundelas that stand proudly alongside the Betwa. These multi-level chhatris have a narrow staircase with which you can climb to the top and behold the panoramic view of the town. You can also witness lovely vulture nests and vultures flocking at the windows and domes here.

The Fort Complex

The fort complex in Orchha is another remarkable site to visit. It houses three prominent historical architectures in a quadrangle: Raja Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal, which is now a heritage hotel run by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

Raja Mahal is the oldest of the three and was built by Raja Rudra Pratap in the 15th century. The simple exterior, crowned with chhatris, give way to interiors with elusive murals. Some of these are in brilliant condition, with an excellent selection of colours and intricate designs, especially in the Diwan-e-Khas and Diwan-e-Aam. Every bit of the palace will compel you to imagine, how the minute designs were planned and executed at that time.

Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal was constructed under the reign of 17th century Bundela ruler Bir Singh Deo, to honour the visit of his friend Jahangir, who was also a Mughal emperor. Designed with an interesting blend of Mughal and Bundela architecture, the palace is known for latticework set around a large courtyard. The site presents a great specimen of fine artistry and Bir Singh Deo's enduring legacy to Orchha.

Ram Raja Temple

Take the next stop to the only temple in India where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king and not as a god. The impressive peach coloured building with domes was once the palace of Queen Ganesh Kumari, the wife of king Madhukar Shah, the ruler of Orchha. It was known as Rani Mahal back then. The best time to enjoy the festivity at the temple is during Ram Navmi celebration in which local musicians from neighbouring villages gather to chant and sing for hours.

Sound & Light Show

After a long day, relax at the fort courtyard as you watch the spellbinding sound-and-light show. The one-hour show brings to life the 500-year-old glorious history of Orchha, from Rudra Pratap Singh's discovery of the hunting spots to the rise of a mighty kingdom. There are noble deeds that would leave you awe-struck.

A Guide To Exploring Orchha

History and culture of orchha, how to get to orchha, best time to travel to orchha, getting around orchha, breaking stereotypes about orchha, go check out.

Orchha Cenotaph

The reason why Orchha has found relevance among travelers is due to the very contrasting effect it has on everyone who visits this gem. Orchha is one of the most historically and culturally rich places in Madhya Pradesh, but what is most endearing about this little farming town is its unassuming simplicity and indifference towards its rich history.

Orchha was one of the most important urban centers a few hundred years ago and is today a religious and spiritual center that attracts hordes of pilgrims regularly. But this fact is lost on the locals of Orchha. It is truly one of the most accurate representations of India and not just because of its rich history but because of hospitality that Orchha showers upon its visitors. Discover just what this little town holds with our Orchha travel guide.

Founded in the 16th Century by the Bundelkhand Chiefs, Orchha history is deeply connected with the Rajput and the Mughal kingdoms. The Orchha fort and the cenotaphs or the ‘chattris’ dotted around the town tell an interesting story of all the local Hindu kings that ruled the Bundelkhand kingdom from Orchha. Orchha is also home to a beautiful testament to Mughal Architecture, The Jahangir Mahal. Jahangir the Mughal ruler was half-Rajput, and this was reason enough for the Rajput King of Orchha to commission its construction as a symbol of their friendship.

Orchha travel guide

It is also an extremely important place of worship for devout Hindus. The Raja Ram temple and the Chatturbhuj temples attract pilgrims throughout the year. While a gunshot sound may rattle your senses, there isn’t much to worry about as it’s a way of saluting the deity in the temple.

Orchha is also home to the Orchha natural preserve; you can rent a bike through your hotel and spend a day exploring the reserve in the lap of mother nature.

Getting To Orchha By Train – Jhansi Railway Station is about half an hour away from Orchha. Jhansi is one of the main railway stations in India and owing to its central location is extremely well connected to major cities and tourist hubs in North and South India .

Getting To Orchha By Road – Orchha is well connected to Jhansi, Gwalior, and Khajuraho, while Agra and Lucknow are not too far away. A/C and Non A/C bus services by state and private providers is also an option.

Winter months are the best time to visit Orchha; it gets really pleasant starting from November and it stays that way till the early weeks of April. Ram Navami, a festival that takes place in early April, is celebrated with a lot of fervor as the city is a major religious center for Hindu pilgrims of Lord Rama.

Orchha travel guide

Monsoons amplify Orchha’s beauty in the most surreal of ways, bringing out a lush green and a sense of freshness in the town. Ganesh Chaturthi is also widely celebrated in Orchha and generally takes place at some point between August and September.

Avoid the summers at all costs, Orchha is excruciatingly hot and it’s best to wait until the monsoons arrive.

Orchha is really small and walking around or renting a bike to go check out all the sites this beautiful town has to offer is the best way to explore. For a more rustic experience, you could travel in a shared auto/ tempo like the locals. It is extremely inexpensive and at times uncomfortable, but when in Orchha, do as the warm affable locals of Orchha do.

“It doesn’t have much to offer” – A stereotype that would hold true for most towns except Orchha. While Orchha is indeed a sleepy town, there’s so much to see and do! From the royal ‘chattris’ that have come to define Orchha as a stronghold of the Rajput kingdoms, to the Raja Ram and Chhatarpur temples that have seen pilgrims pay homage in numbers for centuries – our travel guide for Orchha covers it all. Read on to be surprised with how much it has to offer for a town of its size!

Raja Ram Mandir

The locals of Orchha worship Lord Rama not just as a God but as their king. Legend has it that Lord Rama visited Orchha with the Queen of Orchha as she promised the king her devotion would lead to Lord Rama visiting Ayodhya in the form of a little boy and she would not return from Ayodhya if he did not.

Lord Rama visited Orchha with the Queen and said that he would not move from the first house he would accept in Orchha. That house today stands as the Temple of Lord Rama and hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit this temple annually to pay their respects. There is a unique Gun salute, where the temple fires a gun in honor of Lord Rama during Ram Navami. It is just opposite the Orchha Fort, and an absolute must-visit.

Orchha Fort

Orchha Fort is a huge complex that is divided into 3 major parts - Raj Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, and Jahangir Mahal. The Raj Mahal, as the name suggests, was the palace of Rajput Kings and Queens. This section of the complex is full of wide passages and murals of Lord Vishnu. The Sheesh Mahal was once the residential quarter of Rajput kings and is now a heritage hotel run by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

Jehangir Mahal

Dating back to the 17th century, Jehangir Mahal was built by Rajput King Bir Singh Deo to commemorate the visit of Emperor Jehangir. Jehangir’s Rajput lineage was enough for the Rajput King to build the palace in his name. The palace’s architecture takes from both Rajput and Mughal elements and is an absolutely fascinating visit.

Chaturbhuj Temple

A little further away from the Raja Ram temple, the Chaturbhuj temple was built across the reign of multiple Rajput kings. The temple was built to worship the idol of Lord Rama but since the idol is placed in the Raja Ram Temple, an Image of Radha Krishna (also an avatar of Lord Vishnu, just like Lord Rama) is now worshipped at the temple.

Chaturbhuj is also known to have a 344-foot Vimana, which is the tallest for a temple in India.

The Royal Chattris Or Cenotaphs

14 Chattris lie along the bank of the river Betwa. These were built after the Royal rulers of Orchha. Climb up the Cenotaphs for panoramic views of Orchha that are truly mesmerizing.

7 Best Things To Do in Orchha in 2024

Looking for things to do in Orchha Madhya Pradesh? This small town is absolutely a must-visit on your next India trip and this guide has you sorted with the best places to see in Orccha.

The town of Orchha is over 500 years old and is conveniently close to the city of Jhansi, from where you can easily catch trains all over India . The town is well known as a religious centre and for its historical monuments.

Set on the banks of the Betwa River, Orchha is a great place to escape the crowds and see a quieter side of India.

I visited Orchha as part of a 2 week India trip that also included Abhaneri , Khajuraho , Varanasi and the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur and Agra).

A day trip from Jhansi is an easy way to see Orchha, although I would recommend overnighting in the area so you can see more.

Best Things to Do in Orchha

1. orchha palace.

The Orchha palace, or Orchha Fort, is the number one place to visit in Orchha. Built by the Bundela dynasty, Hindu rulers of the princely state of Orchha from the 16 th  century.

The complex technically includes two major palaces as well as a bunch of smaller (but still impressive) outbuildings. It’s heavily fortified, with the river acting as a moat on one side, and outer walls covered in archer slits and elephant spikes.

The Raja Mahal was the residence of the kings and royal family and is richly decorated inside although simpler outside.

paintings in orccha palace

The Jahangir Palace was built for the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who sadly only visited once. It’s a stunning combination of Indo-Islamic architecture with countless arches and intricate carvings.

You can climb to the upper levels of the Jahangir Palace to get great views over the palace courtyard and surrounding area. Although don’t try this if you’re afraid of heights or have mobility issues as there are no barriers on the balconies and the steps are very steep.

Jahangir Palace Orccha

We hired a local guide from the fort office to explain the history of the complex and I’d definitely recommend this as you learn a lot and there are very few signs to tell you what you’re looking at.

Current guide fees are displayed at the ticket office and are typically a few hundred rupees dependent on group size.

Entry is only around 12rs although you will have to pay extra to take cameras in (smartphones are fine).

The complex is open 8 am to 5 pm but subject to change on holidays.

2. Orchha Temples

Orchha is well known as a Hindu religious hub and particularly for its devotion to Rama, the god who is worshipped as a king (Ram Raja) in Orchha.

There are two main temples in Orchha, the Ram Raja temple which is newer and used for puja ceremonies throughout the day, and the older Chaturbhuj Temple which does technically have an operating shrine but is not used for mass worship.

These temples were built by a previous king and queen of Orchha for their respective favourite deities, with the Ram Raja temple being a converted palace.

Visitors can attend prayers at the Ram Raja temple which is absolutely a must do as the energy here is incredible, creating a very powerful experience. Just remember to remove your shoes, dress (and behave) conservatively and leave room for worshippers.

You can also climb the stairs up to the Chaturbhuj Temple which features panoramic views over the fort, cenotaphs, and surrounding countryside. There is a small shrine to Vishnu at which visitors can make offerings and ask for blessings.

chaturbhaj temple Orchha

3. Orchha Chattris

Chattris are tombs similar to Western cenotaphs but these monuments are unlike any grave or memorial you would find elsewhere in the world. These memorialise different kings of the Bundela dynasty, who also built the Orchha fort.

Set in a large garden and surrounded by flowers in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, this is the most peaceful spot in Orchha to explore and is especially brilliant at sunrise or sunset.

There are four large chhattris and ten smaller ones. Each chattri is a multi-storey building, largely hollow with rows of arches that you can walk between and glimpse the river through. They are topped with domes, some short and rounded and others tall and pointed to mimic the Himalayas. This makes for awesome photos!

Orchha chhattris

4. Saket Museum

This museum, next to the Ram Raja temple, is easy to miss but a must-add to your list of places to visit in Orchha.

The museum is small, but it has some beautiful artworks from all over India representing the stories of Lord Ram in markedly different artistic styles.

The main attraction at the museum is the life-size statues of the gods, brightly coloured and made of fibreglass.

hindu god statues in orccha museum

5. Betwa River rafting

As Orchha is built around the river, getting out on the water is a great way to see a different side of the town and a very different experience to your typical sightseeing.

There are a couple of companies offering rafting trips, generally one-way starting from just past the main bridge with jeep transfers back to your starting point. The easiest way to book is to call ahead.

Expect to pay anything from 200-2500rs per person depending on inclusions (ie hotel transfers, lunch).

The river is fairly calm but there are some rapids (Grades 1/2) to keep things interesting. And the water is much cleaner than elsewhere in India so if you end up falling in it’s not the end of the world.

6. Rajni Cooking School

Learning to cook some Indian cuisine is a must-do on your trip and there is an opportunity to do this in Orchha with Rajni Cooking Classes.

Rather than a hands-on school with an industrial kitchen, these classes are hosted by a local woman in her family’s home. While you can help out with making dishes, the classes are mostly a demonstration.

Each class typically starts with masala chai and can include 10+ dishes, depending on group size. And yes, you do get to eat them all at the end!

There is no schedule or online bookings so the best way to organise a class is to make a request via the Facebook page .

Like all Indian towns, Orchha has a main street full of small shops and market stalls. The area around the Ram Raja temple in particular, is full of stalls selling both tourist souvenirs and religious paraphernalia like garlands and ribbons.

The shopping here is good, considering the size of the town and provides a calmer alternative to the larger markets in the big cities. You do still need to bargain hard though!

I found most shops sell similar goods of relatively cheap quality but found some great bargains on clothing.

Orchha Tours

There are very few options available for scheduled guided tours to Orchha, especially for foreign visitors. However, you can easily organise a private driver to take you around, make enquiries at Jhansi station.

Orchha is only 20km from the city of Jhansi which is the closest transport hub.

The best way to get to Orchha from Jhansi is by hiring a taxi which are easiest to find at the train station.

The drive takes around 30-45 minutes, depending on the time of day and can cost anything from a few hundred rupees to a few thousand depending on your bargaining skills.

There is technically a local train that runs between Jhansi and Orchha however it stops quite a way out from the main attractions and accommodations so it’s not a great option if you have baggage with you.

Jhansi train station

Orchha Itinerary

If you are doing an Orchha day trip from Jhansi, I’d recommend focusing on the palace and two main temples.

If you have another day, try getting up early to see the cenotaphs (chattris) at sunrise then head out for a bit of river rafting. Hit the markets for some food and a bit of shopping.

Where to stay in Orchha

Like most of regional India, there are no chain hotels and most accommodation is small family-run ‘hotels’ that are very basic however there are 2-3 higher quality options aimed at foreign tourists.

Luxury: Amar Mahal Hotel – Mahal means palace and this place truly does look like one, right from the front gates

Mid-range: Orchha Resort –this is a mass-market tourist option but offers all the more comfortable touches like a pool, spa and buffet that are less common elsewhere

Budget: Hotel Ganpati – a friendly family-run spot with river views and basic but clean rooms

A tip for Indian accommodation: you get what you pay for so if something looks like a great deal don’t expect it to be as good as the pictures. Things like wifi, AC and hot water may be advertised but not actually working.

Frequently asked questions on Orchha

While peak tourist season in India is from November to February and has the coolest temperatures, you’ll find the place quieter and get even better deals if you come slightly before or after. I last visited Orccha in October which had good weather (hot and humid but manageable with some cooling drizzle).

While there are many attractions in Orchha, the town is most famous for its fort/palace, closely followed by the temples of Ram Raja and Vishnu.

This really depends on how much you like to cram into a day and how many of the things to do in Orchha are of interest to you. Most people only do a day trip, but I would say overnighting (2 days) is ideal.

In Short: Places to see in Orccha

Visiting Orchha is a truly unique experience and a great option for travellers wanting an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Happy travelling!

Orchha: A Sneak Peek into a Fascinating Historical Destination

“Saat dhar Sarju bahe

Nagar Orchha dham

Phool bagh nau chowk mein

viraje Raja Ram…”

Nothing describes Orchha better than these lines of its renowned bard, Keshav Das. Orchha, the erstwhile capital of the Bundeli rulers, is a fantastical land weaved by both history and legends. With the Betwa River as a silent spectator, every nook and cranny of Orchha is dipped in Bundeli legends and histories.

Outline of Orchha

Table of Contents

About Orchha:

Orchha is located in Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh. It lies 14 km from Jhansi, 120 km from Gwalior, and 172 km from Khajuraho. In the ancient era, Orchha went by the name of Osseen. Orchha was made the capital of the Bundeli kingdom by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh in 1531 CE. It continued to remain the capital of the entire Bundelkhand from 1531 to 1783 CE.  Rugged hills, dense forest, and the Betwa or Vetravati river surrounded Orchha thus securing it and hiding it from the onslaught of the Mughal forces. In fact, the word ‘Orchha’ aptly means hidden. The town remained hidden from the Mughals and continues to remain elusive to tourists and explorers even today.

Ruins of Orchha

How to reach Orchha:

By train: Though Orchha has a railway station, it is not very well-connected with other parts of India. Hence, you must opt for trains that reach Jhansi, which is just a 30-minute drive from Orchha. Jhansi, on the other hand, has train connectivity with almost every prominent Indian city. You have Chambal Express from Howrah, Gatiman Express, NDLS Shatabdi Express, and a host of other trains from New Delhi, Pushpak Express and Kushinagar Express from Mumbai, Tamilnadu Express, and Grand Trunk Express from Chennai.

By flight: Nearest airport of Orchha is Vijaya Raje Scindia Airport of Khajuraho . From Gwalior, it takes around 2 hours to reach Orchha.

Doors of Orccha

What is the best time to visit Orchha:

Orchha is the most beautiful post-monsoon. The stunning monuments of Orchha stand out against the greenery of surrounding forests. October is therefore perfect for visiting Orchha. Moreover, the winter months of November to February are also ideal as the temperature remains soothing. Avoid the summer months altogether, as it remains sultry and scorching.

Where to stay in Orchha:

We stayed at Hotel Orchha Palace . Though this 5-star luxurious property is an excellent option for staying, it is quite far from the major attractions. While booking, we somehow missed its actual location which caused a bit of snag. As the property lies outside the main town of Orchha, we found it problematic to find an e-rickshaw to visit the places of interest. Hence, we strongly suggest booking a hotel in proper Orchha.

Amar Mahal is a reputed resort, located a stone’s throw away from Chaturbhuj Temple. You can also look for MPT Betwa Retreat and MPT Sheesh Mahal (situated inside the Orchha Fort complex).

Where to eat in Orchha:

Orchha is a small town and not very touristy. You will not find many swanky restaurants or cafes here. You can try Café NoMads and Open Sky Restaurant, both nice places to hang out. The restaurant of MPT Sheesh Mahal also serves good food.

How to travel around Orchha:

Other than the Lakshmi Narayana Temple, all the other places of interest of Orchha lie within a 2 km radius of Ram Raja Temple. You just need to reach Ram Raja Temple either by e-rickshaw or auto-rickshaw and then explore on foot.

For visiting the Lakshmi Narayana Temple, go for an auto-rickshaw. The uphill trail to this temple is rugged. E-rickshaws are unable to cover this bumpy road and will leave you at the foothill. Then you need to hike the path for reaching the top.

Who were the Bundelas:

The Bundelas are regarded as the fiercest among the Rajput warrior clans. According to legends, when Hemkaran, the Gaharwar chief of Benaras, was dethroned by his brothers, he worshipped Goddess Vindhyavashini and sacrificed five humans to appease her. The Goddess was pleased and conferred the title of Pancham Vindhyela upon Hemkaran. The word Vindhyela was contorted to Bundela.

Another version of the same legend attributes the title Bundela to ‘bund’ or drops of blood that trickled down from the throat of Hemkaran when he attempted to sacrifice himself.

Majestic Fort

The destiny of Orchha was shaped by the Bundela rulers like Rudra Pratap Singh, Bharti Chand, Madhukar Shah, and Ram Shah. The prosperity of Orchha reached its zenith and a golden age was ushered during the reign of Bir Sigh Deo, who became a favorite of Mughal Emperor Jahangir after assassinating Abul Fazl, Akbar’s close friend and court poet. Many of the majestic edifices of Orchha were commissioned by Bir Singh Deo.

What to see in Orchha:

The vista of Orchha is dotted with incredible forts, palaces, temples, and cenotaphs built by the Bundela rulers. Also, the riverside of Betwa is delightful for enjoying gorgeous sunsets.

Places to visit in Orchha:

The prime attractions of Orchha can be broadly divided into 4 groups – the Orchha Fort complex comprising Raja Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, and Rai Parveen Mahal; the Ram Raja complex consisting of Ram Raja Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple, and Sawan Bhadon; the Lakshmi Narayan Temple complex; and last but not the least, the Chhatris by the Betwa river.

Part of Jahangir Mahal

A. The Orchha Fort Complex:

One of the most conspicuous monuments of Orchha, the Fort complex is an amalgamation of massive and magnificently built palaces. It took us over 4 hours to explore the entire Orchha Fort complex. Also, we opted for the audio tour guide of Madhya Pradesh tourism. It was cheap (INR 25 per pre-recorded audio guide along with headphones), incredibly informative and convenient, and also gave us the freedom to explore the sites as per our choice.

Orchha Fort complex

Diwan-e-Aam:

The first building that you will come across right after entering the Fort is the Diwan-e-Aam. Here, the king used to hold an assembly with his council of ministers. The Diwan-e-Aam has elegantly carved archways, while its ceiling is decorated with Bundeli-styled paintings.

Painting on the ceiling

Raja Mahal:

One of the most spectacular edifices of Orchha Fort is the Raja Mahal, which was built by Raja Madhukar Shah around the 1570s. Consisting of 5 floors, the architecture of this palace is a fusion of Rajput and Mughal styles.

Raja Mahal

At the entrance, there are 2 audience halls – ‘darbar-i-khas’, used by the king for a private audience, and ‘darbar-i-aam’, used for dance and musical performances.

Next, one by one, you will run into the ‘Baradari’ or family pavilion where the King and his family members assembled for dining, Female Attendants’ Rooms surrounding the Zenana Courtyard, King’s Living Quarters, and Queen’s Living Quarters upstairs.

Queen's Quarter of Raja Mahal

While the exteriors of the Raja Mahal are plain and modest, the interiors stand in stark contrast with ornate and vibrant wall paintings. The lavish paintings are predominantly religious in nature. Some of the most striking murals depict Dasavatara of Vishnu, Samudra Manthan, Krishna lifting Mount Govardhana as well as scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Murals on the wall

Jahangir Mahal:

Undoubtedly, the Jahangir Mahal is the most impressive structure of the Orchha Fort complex. According to prevalent belief, it was constructed by Raja Bir Sigh Deo in honor of his dear friend, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who spent only one night here.

Jahangir Mahal

The colossal Jahangir Mahal is three-storied, crowned with 8 beautiful domes. It has 236 chambers, out of which 136 lie underground. The palace is decorated with intricately carved doors with elaborate arches, elephant and peacock brackets, and lotus pendentives. Its interior is characterized by elaborate ornamentation, trellis work, lapis lazuli inlays, and glazed blue tiles.

Roof of Jahangir Mahal

The main entrance door or Shahi Darwaza of Jahangir Mahal is called Hindola Dwar. Flanked by two elephants with bells and flowers in their trunks, this stunning gate is decorated with floral patterns and multi-foiled arches. From here, you can see the camel stables and ‘hamam’ or royal bath as also a panoramic view of Orchha.

Main entrance of the Jahangir Mahal

Sheesh Mahal:

It was built by Raja Udait Singh in 1763 CE as a pleasure retreat. It was dubbed Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors due to its glazed green and blue tiles. It has now been converted into a heritage hotel by MP Tourism.

Sheesh mahal

Rai Parveen Mahal

It was built for Rai Parveen, the courtesan of Raja Indrajit. This palace is known for life-size wall paintings of the beautiful Rai Parveen.

B. The Ram Raja Complex:

Ram raja temple:.

This temple was originally the palace of Rani Ganeshkunwari, Queen of Raja Madhukar Shah. According to legends, the Queen was a devout follower of Ram Chandra. One night, she dreamt of Shree Ram requesting her to build a temple and enshrine it with his image. The next morning, she commissioned the construction of the Chaturbhuj Temple and immediately left for Ayodhya to get an idol of Ram Chandra. However, on her return, the Queen found that the temple was still unfinished and hence placed the statue in her palace. The Queen, however, had forgotten the directive of Ram Chandra, who had warned her that the idol would stay where it would be installed first. As such, the idol of Shree Ram continued to remain inside the palace, which was consequently converted into Ram Raja Temple.

Ram Raja Temple

It is the only temple in India where Ram Chandra is worshipped as King. The evening arati at Ram Raja Temple is a spectacle to behold.

Chaturbhuj Temple:

The skyscape of Orchha is dominated by the monumental, sky-reaching shikhara of the Chaturbhuj Temple. It was here that the idol of Ram Chandra was originally supposed to be placed. The 105-meter high temple now houses a statue of Shree Krishna and Shree Radhika, worshipped daily at regular intervals.

Chaturbhuj Temple

The exterior of this massive temple is ornately decorated with floral motifs and religious emblems. In stark contrast, the interior is plain and austere.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Sawan Bhadon:

Near the Ram Raja Temple, there stand these two pillar-like structures, which look rather odd considering the royal set-up of Orchha predominated by palaces, temples, and Chhatris. These pillars were allegedly constructed in memory of Bagh Raj, one of the sons of Raja Bir Singh Deo, and Mahatma Anup Giri, a saint revered by the Bundela rulers of Orchha. In reality, these pillars served as fresh air vents, providing ventilation for the army resting underground. Moreover, the name Sawan Bhadon is a recent concoction, devised by the local residents of Orchha.

C. Lakshmi Narayan Temple:

The gorgeous Lakshmi Narayan Temple was built by Raja Bir Singh Deo Bundela. The temple is a unique structure as it resulted from the mingling of architectural styles of both temple and fort.

Lakshmi Narayan Temple

The most intriguing feature of this temple is the presence of vivid murals on its interior walls and ceilings. The lively, colorful paintings are the finest specimens of Bundeli style of painting, which resulted from a marriage of Rajput and Mughal styles. The paintings are mostly religious in nature, portraying scenes from the life of Shree Krishna, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and so on. There are also depictions of the royal lifestyle along with various floral and geometric motifs. One of the most famous murals here shows Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi leading her army in a battle against the British forces in 1857.

Ornate wall paintings

D. Chhatris:

The name of Orchha inadvertently reminds one of the spectacular Chhatris, standing tall on the bank of the Betwa River. The Chhatris are cenotaphs of Bundela rulers of Orchha, earmarking the ground where the Kings were cremated.

Famous chhatris of Orchha

In total, there are 14 Chhatris, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Apart from Bir Singh Deo’s Chhatri which resembles a palace, the cenotaphs follow the Nagara style of temple architecture. They are modeled on ‘panchayatana’ style with ‘garbhagriha’ inside and ‘shikharas’ at the top.

Chhatri of Bundela kings

The Chhatris look especially exceptional when seen from the other side of the Betwa. During sunrise, they are illuminated by the first rays of the sun. While during sunset, their silhouettes appear captivating.

Know before you go:

1. The Orchha Fort remains open from 9 AM to 6 PM every day. The entry fee for Indians is INR 10 and for foreigners INR 250. Charges also apply for photography and videography cameras.

2. Guides are available near the entrance of the Orchha Fort. However, we suggest opting for the audio guide tour, which is cheap and informative. In our experience, we have found guides exaggerating facts and stressing more events that are not always historically accurate.

3. Preserve the ticket of Orchha Fort as it will give you access to the Chhatris and Lakshmi Narayan Temple.

4. Tripods are not allowed inside any of the monuments in Orchha. Not even the small hand-held tripod of GoPro.

5. You can also visit Datia, situated 46 km from Orchha. Datia is famous for the colossal Bir Singh Deo Palace.

  • 15 Best Things to Do in Orchha
  • Madhya Pradesh

The list of things to do in Orchha covers a range of activities that will make you fall in love with this place. Resting royally on the banks of river Betwa, this historic town was founded in the 16th century.

The brainchild of Bundela Rajput Chief, Rudra Pratap, Orchha features brilliant architecture in the form of beautiful display of Mughal-influenced Rajput palaces, temples and royal chhatris. Frozen in time, this town seems to retain the original grandeur of the monuments, even till this date.

Being located in a place that is covered with forests and the river Betwa splitting into seven channels, this town was given the name Orchha, meaning ‘a hidden place’. With every turn the river makes, one can find historical landmarks on either side of the river.

Despite being the capital of the Bundela Rajput kings, Orchha seldom witnessed ferocious battles, leading to unscratched monuments that would help you visualize the earlier phases the town has witnessed.

The place is not on many tourist maps but that only tells how unexplored it really is. Less crowd and more peace, this place is just 16 km away from the city of Jhansi. The best way to reach here from Jhansi is by the ever-reliable auto rickshaw. Passing through the narrow winding roads, a time travel back to a more peaceful era is evident.

The best time to visit this town of solitude is from October to March when the cool breeze adds on to the serenity of the place.

Raja Ram Temple | Orchha Temple

It is also known as the Orchha temple and is one of the oldest temples in India and is considered to be very sacred. Built-in the 16th century, this is the only place in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a King and that too in a palace. A guard of honour is given to the Lord every day and police personnel are deployed as the guards of the King. The food provided to the Lord too is royal in nature. Armed salutation is given to the Lord every day.

This Orchha temple was built by Raja Madhukar Shah for his queen Ganesh Kuwari. The legend says that Ganesh Kuwari went to Ayodhya to get an image of Lord Rama to enshrine in her new temple in Orchha. However, as the construction of the temple was not complete, the idol of the Lord had to be placed in the palace temporarily.

When the construction got completed, the idol was to be moved to Chaturbhuj Temple however the idol refused to be removed from its place. As such, the palace was converted into a temple and Lord Rama was worshipped as King. Here, Lord Rama is sitting in Padmasana and spotting his left foot is considered to be very auspicious. This is amongst the unmissable places to visit in Orchha and one of its kind in India.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places you should visit. Why? Easy! This National Park has the highest Tiger density and your chances of seeing a tiger are very high. So if seeing these majestic cats in the wild has been on your bucket list, then I highly recommend going to Bandhavgarh National Park.

The core zone of the Tiger Reserve is split up in 3 areas: Tala, Magdhi, and Khitauli, surrounded by a generous buffer zone. I visited the Tala zone and had 3 Tiger sightings on 2 safari drives, and saw a lot of other wildlife as well.

If you are looking for a responsible and eco-friendly safari company, I highly recommend Pugdundee Safaris . I was invited by them to get to know their lodges and safaris and was blown away by the high ethical and environmental protection standards they follow, such as waste reduction, conservation efforts and hiring locals.

They have two properties at Bandhavgarh and both are absolutely amazing. Kings Lodge is a stunning lodge with all the amenities you could wish for, including pool and a spa. The Treehouse Hideaway is something really special: You sleep in a super luxurious tree house and it is definitely a wonderful experience.

Taj-ul-Masjid Mosque Bhopal

by A World To Travel

Among the architectural landmarks of the city of Bhopal , the nerve center of the province of Madhya Pradesh in the heart of India, the Taj-ul-Masjid mosque truly stands out. Not only for its beauty but also for its size because it is said to be the largest in all of India. Its construction was initiated by Shah Jehan Begum (1868-1901), although the works did not finish until 1971. This mosque receives the largest concentration of Muslims in the entire country, the Ijtima. Some sources say that up to 175,000 people fit inside.

If you visit it early and during a weekday, you may be able to admire how it becomes Madrasa or school for young people. Maybe because of this fact, or for any other reason – who knows – women do not have to cover their heads as in any other mosque as a general rule (please bear in mind that this can change at any time and if you are a woman you may have to cover your head in any case). The shoes must be left at the entrance. Do not forget the camera, the reflections from the central pond and the ‘forest of columns’ inside are impressive.

Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park is definitely one of the must-visit Madhya Pradesh Tourist Places. The beautiful Sal tree forests and rolling meadows, as well as the flourishing wildlife at Kanha National Park was the inspiration for Kipling’s Jungle Book. While I didn’t get to see Shere Khan or Bagheera during my safari there, I still saw beautiful landscapes and many, many other stunning animals. From the Barasingha Swamp Deer to Indian Bison, beautiful birds and lovely butterflies, Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh is a paradise for animal and nature lovers.

It gets really hot starting in April, so if you are not used to the heat, I recommend visiting between October and March. The park is closed from July to Mid-October for the monsoon.

As a place to stay, I highly recommend Kanha Earth Lodge – a Pugdundee Safaris Lodge . Their bungalows are as luxurious as villas and the staff is incredibly friendly. Make sure you go on a sundowner up on the little hill behind the lodge – it is an incredible experience.

Chanderi – Madhya Pradesh Tourist Sites

by A Tale of Two Backpackers

Chanderi is a quaint town in the heart of Madhya Pradesh steeped with history and heritage and one of the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places. Set amidst a naturally beautiful landscape surrounded by hills, Chanderi had a prominent place in the history of India.

The town of Chanderi fell on the major trade route of Central India and on the route to Malwa and was always in the eyesight of the earlier rulers. This can be seen from the abundant archaeological structures found in the town. There are forts, mosques, temples, and lakes in this small town.

The Kirti Durg or Chanderi Fort is one of the most striking places in the city and at night the lights of the fort can be seen even from a distance. Other places of interest include the Badal Mahal Darwaza, Raja Rani Mahal, Koshak Mahal, Sehzadi ki Roza, Kati Ghati, Jama Masjid, Jageshwari Temple, Parameshwar Taal and many more. Each of the structure seems to tell the stories of the past.

Tales of the past is strewn all around Chanderi. Chanderi is most famous for the Chanderi sarees, a very fine fabric that is said to have been weaved since the fourteenth century. These fine fabrics were patronized by the Mughals and the royals of the country. The weavers or Bunkaars are still trying to maintain their heritage while weaving and even till date Chanderi sarees are one of the best sarees in the country. Chanderi is a hidden gem in the tourism map of Madhya Pradesh. With so many wonderful historical structures, natural beauty and weaving of the Chanderi fabric, the place is sure to win the heart of its visitors.

Gwalior Fort

by ASocialNomad

Described by Mughal emperor Babur as the Pearl of India’s fortresses, Gwalior Fort is truly magnificent.

Although there’s been a fortification here since 525 A.D., this current fort was built, its thought, in the 8th century. The fort location was selected when, legend says, a local chief received waters which healed leprosy – he then founded Gwalior, which stands for “saint” in Hindi”.

There are two entrances to the fort, the west gate, which you can take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to, or the east gate, which you can approach only on foot. I seriously recommend the short walk of around 15 minutes if you don’t stop and admire the view up from the Gwalior Gate through the East Gate. This lets you appreciate the truly magnificent location and display the fort puts on. En route you’ll pass 5 gates (or their remains) and also a memorial to the first recorded zero as it was Indian mathematicians who first invented the circle that we know as zero.

Once at the top, the fort covers an area that is 3km long and there are various temples and areas to visit. Go early to avoid the heat, take a break and enjoy the peaceful surrounds. Walk down, past the superb Jain carvings after the Urvai or west gate and then take an autorickshaw back to town. This is a truly magnificent fort and well worth the visit.

Pench National Park

by Karla Around The World

Pench National Park offers a variety of activities that is not just limited to wildlife and jeep safari. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Pench Tree Lodge where you can do a Nature Walk within the property, bush dinner, picnic, organic farm dinner, cycle and more. The property itself feels like you are in the middle of nowhere and all the greenery surrounding it makes you feel like you are in Paradise.

If you had had enough of wildlife excursions, you can also go for the village experience and the market where you can interact with the locals. I really loved my visit to the Village. We observed how their daily life is like out there and interacted with them. It was sad that I couldn’t speak their language and that the guide had to translate everything but despite that we had meaningful interactions with them as they showed us their home, their lifestyle and more.

Bhimbetka Rock Shelters UNESCO World Heritage Site

This UNESCO Heritage Site features prehistoric rock paintings that are over 30,000 years old, but first human settlement in this area dates back more than 100,000 years. The complex is evidence of the oldest human settlement in India. Due to its historic significance, it became a UNESCO Site in 2003.

The various rock paintings from the different time period show animals and people, dancing and hunting scenes and is one of the largest prehistoric complexes in the world.

The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters are about 1 hour from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

by Nomadic Chicca

Orchha is one of those Madhya Pradesh tourist places where I wish I could stay longer. As soon as I arrived the calm and relaxed vibe of this town got me and I wanted to explore more. Orchha means “hidden” and as its name, is still one of those places where tourism has not arrived in masses yet. Being the testimony of the medieval times when the monuments and palaces where built when Orchha was the capital of the Bundelkhand Empire, being in Orchha is like traveling back in time.

It will take just catching one sunset at the gorgeous Jehangir Mahal palace to grab your heart and a walk near the river Betwa, where in summer you can do great rafting, or grabbing a tea in one of the palace hotels to feel the beauty and magic of this place. The best time to visit Orchha is from October to March, when you find the best temperatures and weather, avoiding the months of the Monsoon or the summer when temperatures can rise up to 50ºC.

Satpura National Park

by My Adventures Across The World

There is no doubt that going to Satpura National Park is one of the best things to do in Madhya Pradesh and that this is one of the best places to visit in India . This is one of the top destinations in the country to have an opportunity to see tigers in their natural environment, though doing so requires a lot of patience, and some early wake up calls as these animals are incredibly elusive.

It is said that around 40 tigers live in the park, though spotting them isn’t easy and requires several game drives. The best time to spot them is in the very early morning hours or in the late afternoon, right before sunset. They are night creatures that tend to roam alone and prefer wet areas, so the best time of the year to visit Satpura for chances to see tigers is during or right after the wet season.

UNESCO Site Buddhist Monument at Sanchi – Madhya Pradesh Tourist Places

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Sanchi is definitely a must-visit Tourist Place in Madhya Pradesh. It is about a 1-hour drive from Bhopal. The stone Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest structures in India and dates back to 300 B.C. It was inscribed as a UNESCO Site in 1989.

The four gateways that surround the Mahastupa (Great Stupa) have intricate carvings that show important events in Buddha’s life and supposedly the ashes of Buddha himself have found their final resting place inside the Great Stupa.

Like most sights in India, you can visit from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Indian citizens pay an entrance fee of 60 INR and foreign citizens pay 500 INR.

Khajuraho Group of Monuments – UNESCO Site India

Another one of the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places is the Khajuraho Monuments in Chhatarpur. They were built between 950-1050 AD and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Out of the original 85 temples, only 20 remain, but they are well worth a visit. The temple complex is most known for its celebration of eroticism and showcases a plentitude of sculptures in suggestive poses. Their intricate carving and architectural skill will leave you in awe.

A big thank you to Madhya Pradesh Tourism for inviting me to the Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart and showing me this stunning region.
