Greta Van Fleet

Oh lady, when ya come on down Won't ya come on down? I said to my town

Oh mama when ya come on down Won't ya come on down? I said to my home

Oo lady won't you move my way? Can't ya move my way? I'm getting hazy

Oh mama when you give your lovin' When you give your love You drive me crazy

Ah mama what you gonna do With all that love in your heart? Ah mama what you gonna say About that love in your heart? Oh mama when you walk this way Why don't you give some lovin'? Oo mama what you gonna do With all that lovin' in your heart?

See mama gotta feel your everything Feel your everything I really wanna know

See mama when you shine you're shinin' bright Give you're given right I really want our love to grow

See mama when your heart is in its place See that smilin' face It's all I wanna do

See mama every time that you are near It's when your gonna fear You're never gonna come back home

Do you remember what I said When I got down on my knees? Gotta get your lovin', baby Lovin's all I need Don't make me beg now, baby Don't make me bleed I gave you all a man could give And you still walked out on me

Your heart Your heart Your heart Your heart Lovin' Burnin Fire

Where Did Our Love Go The Supremes

Holland-Dozier-Holland originally wrote "Where Did Our Love Go" with The Marvelettes in mind, but they turned it down. Song Lyrics Have Become Angrier, Simpler and More Repetitive, Scientists Find

An analysis of more than 12,000 rap, pop, country, rock and R&B songs from the past 50 years shows more emotional and straightforward lyrics

Christian Thorsberg

Daily Correspondent

A stock photograph of a concert, with silhouetted fans raising their arms in the foreground and a singer on stage in the background.

In recent years, the growing availability of  personalized music data has made many listeners more perceptive of their own tastes and tendencies. But measuring how music itself has changed—across genres and decades—is an arguably more daunting task. Now, scientists have tried to do just that.

A new study published last week in the journal Scientific Reports  analyzed thousands of English-language songs released between 1970 and 2020 to better understand how music’s content, construction and tone are evolving. The team of European scientists examined five of the Western world’s most popular music genres: rap, pop, country, rock and R&B.

In all, the team found that lyrics over the past 50 years have generally become more personal, straightforward and charged with negative emotions—a trend, the researchers hypothesize, that reflects both society’s mood and the changing landscape of how music is enjoyed.

Scientists began by building a music database using the online platform last.fm , with lyrics pulled in from genius.com . From an initial pool of 582,759 full songs to choose from, they narrowed their data set to 353,320—then analyzed the lyrics for traits like complexity, readability, structure, rhyme and emotion. Next, artificial intelligence models created and studied a representative sample of 12,000 songs, which included a more balanced mix of release years and genres.

Overall, the analysis revealed that songs now use more rhyming words and choruses. “Across all genres, lyrics had a tendency to become more simple and more repetitive,” Eva Zangerle , the study’s senior author and a computer science professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, tells the Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Songs have also become more personal, with pronouns such as “mine” and “me” increasing in frequency across nearly all genres, except for country. They are growing more emotional, too—all genres increased the use of words tied to negative emotions, with rap showing the biggest rise in anger.

Alongside the general trends, different genres told their own stories. “Among the evaluated musical genres, rap is the one in which lyrics play the most prominent role,” the researchers write. Listeners viewed rap lyrics online most often, but the “richness” of the genre’s vocabulary—described as the number of unique words used—was seen to decrease with time. Researchers attributed this trend to rap songs’ tendency to repeat lines and rhymes.

Country music fans were more likely to search and view the lyrics of newer songs, and conversely, rock listeners were more likely to view the lyrics of older songs—a reflection, the researchers posit, of the ages of the genres’ audiences.

Listeners of R&B, a category that also included soul music, viewed lyrics the second most often, reports Forbes ’ Arianna Johnson. But for pop, rock and country, “lyrics might not be a very meaningful indicator” of how the genres have evolved over the last five decades, the authors write.

With more music than ever being listened to on apps and streaming platforms, capturing listeners’ attention has moved to the forefront of many artists’ consideration—and the trends revealed in the new study may reflect that.

“When people are faced with lots and lots of choices, they tend to prefer things that are easier to process and more straightforward,” Michael Varnum , a cultural psychologist at Arizona State University who did not participate in the research, tells Scientific American ’s Lauren Leffer.

Analysis from Paul Lamere of Echo Nest, a music data platform owned by Spotify, shows that almost 50 percent of Spotify listeners will skip a song before it ends, and nearly one-quarter will skip it in the first five seconds.

“The first 10 to 15 seconds are highly decisive for whether we skip the song or not,” Zangerle tells AFP. So maybe, in the race to grab listeners’ interest, more repetitive songs have an edge. “Lyrics should stick easier nowadays, simply because they are easier to memorize.”

Song Lyrics Really Are Getting Simpler and More Repetitive, Study Finds

An assessment of hundreds of thousands of songs confirms that choruses and hooks have taken over—but simpler isn’t necessarily worse

When comparing today’s hit tunes with the top 40 of past decades, strong opinions are never in short supply. Every generation seems to lament its successor’s musical tastes and listening habits. Though science can’t necessarily account for such subjective preferences or generational divides, new research suggests popular music has indeed undergone some measurable and significant shifts over the past 50 years—with popular song lyrics becoming simpler and more repetitive , according to a study published on Thursday in Scientific Reports .

“There’s more rhyming lines and also more chorus,” says the study’s senior author Eva Zangerle , a computer scientist at Austria’s University of Innsbruck, who has developed music recommendation algorithms. “We basically found that lyrics [have gotten] easier to comprehend.” This trend, observed across five of the most popular English-language music genres (pop, rock, rap, R&B and country) since 1970, hints at how shifts in music listening habits, platforms and production may be shaping pop culture.

Zangerle and her co-authors compiled lyrics from 353,320 well-known songs released between 1970 and 2020. They used machine learning to single out these songs’ key linguistic features, such as the ratio of repeated words, the types of emotional cues, a readability score and the richness of vocabulary. Then they developed and trained additional models to sort and analyze those features across years in a representative subset of 12,000 songs.

The researchers discovered that the ratio of repeated to nonrepeated lines has ticked up across genres over the years, nearly doubling for pop songs and rising even more rapidly for rap music. The ratio of choruses to other song sections rose as well. The study also found that contemporary music lyrics convey more negative emotions and fewer positive ones than in the past and that songs have become more personal, with a higher frequency of pronouns such as “I” and “me”—echoing past research findings about shifts in lyrical content .

“I thought this study was really cool,” says Michael Varnum, a cultural psychologist at Arizona State University, who was not involved in the new research. Varnum has previously studied popular music and detected similar declines in lyrical complexity over time. This new work replicates those findings with a more inclusive sample, he says, by surveying an order of magnitude more songs, comparing across genres and looking beyond the biggest chart-toppers to assess the larger landscape of what people listen to.

Yet even this study’s expansive dataset isn’t completely comprehensive. Its focus on English-language songs—compiled from the online platform Genius—means it is inherently biased toward the Western cultural canon, Zangerle says.

Emotional intention and meaning, too, are hard to parse from lyrics alone, says Robin James , an independent popular music and philosophy scholar. James points out that slang terms such as “slay” might appear angry or violent in an automated assessment but actually convey a positive emotional meaning. Even complexity is challenging to quantify, she adds. Lyrics that seem like simple gibberish at first can actually be clever wordplay, James points out, noting Missy Elliot’s backward lines in the 2002 hit song “Work It.”

And lyrics are just one small part of what makes up a song, says Kaleb Goldschmitt, an ethnomusicologist at Wellesley College and co-editor of the Journal of Popular Music Studies . Even if lyrics are getting simpler, musical factors such as texture and rhythm seem to be getting more complex, Goldschmitt says.

Still, shifts in lyrical structure—particularly a boom in choruses—are apparent enough that music scholars have already been noting the trend for a few years, James says. It isn’t clear why these repeated sections are taking up more time in songs. But based on his past research, Varnum hypothesizes that the sheer amount of new music being produced could partially explain the phenomenon. “When people are faced with lots and lots of choices, they tend to prefer things that are easier to process and more straightforward,” he says.

The way people interact with songs has also shifted, Varnum adds, with more and more listeners tuning in to music while multitasking. “It would make sense that if it’s in the background, you don’t necessarily want things that are going to be challenging or attention-grabbing,” he says.

Today’s prevalence of streaming, Zangerle suggests, may also play a role by changing the ways artists compose for their market. Instead of investing in a whole album based on a single familiar song, listeners can now easily—and freely—preview every song an artist makes. This could ramp up pressure on artists to ensure all their songs are as catchy as possible.

But catchiness isn’t inherently negative, and music fans shouldn’t overthink what they like to hear. “Whether [the trend is] good or bad—that’s something I try to stay out of when thinking about science,” Varnum says.

“Complex music isn’t necessarily better music,” Goldschmitt notes. “If that were the case, we’d all be listening to prog rock.”

Song lyrics have become angrier and more repetitive since the 80s, study finds

Lyrics in rock, rap, country, pop and R&B songs have become simpler and easier to understand over time, while also becoming more emotional and personal, according to the study.

Song lyrics have become angrier and more repetitive over the past four decades, a study has found.

Lyrics in rock, rap, country, pop, and R&B songs have also become simpler and more personal, according to research published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Rap songs showed the strongest increase in anger and negative emotions, while country songs had the lowest, the researchers said.

Eva Zangerle, an assistant professor at the University of Innsbruck's department of computer science in Austria, said anger-related words may have become more common because music "reflects more general changes in society and culture".

Prof Zangerle and her colleagues analysed the lyrics of 12,000 English-language songs released between 1980 and 2020, as well as the page views of the lyrics on online platform Genius.

They found lyrics have become simpler and easier to understand over time, while also becoming more emotional and personal.

Analysis also showed the number of different words used within songs has decreased, particularly among rap and rock songs.

The team speculated this may be because of changes in how music is enjoyed, such as increases in songs being used as background music.

Prof Zangerle said: "In the last 40 years, we have witnessed a change from buying records in the store to being able to choose from hundreds of millions of songs on streaming platforms on the phone.

"This has also changed the way music is consumed."

By analysing the page views on Genius, the team found older rock songs were viewed more than newer ones, but the reverse was true for country songs. They said it could indicate rock listeners prefer lyrics from older songs, while country listeners may prefer those from newer songs.

Prof Zangerle gave Bruce Springsteen's 1973 song Spirit In The Night as a good example of complex songwriting, while she said Miley Cyrus's 2019 hit Slide Away has simpler and repetitive lyrics.

10 songs for the total solar eclipse with the word ‘eclipse’ in the lyrics

P ATH OF TOTALITY, Ohio - You may have heard in the past year or so about a little celestial event that’s happening in early April called a total solar eclipse. This rare glimpse into the wonders of the universe won’t happen again until 2044 in any part of the continental United States, so understandably, folks are excited and want to make the experience as enjoyable and special as possible.

To that end, the Information Superhighway is infested with various folks offering musical playlists to watch the moon blot out the sun. We enjoy a good click-baiting trend as much as any so we’re joining on the fun. But because we here at Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer hold ourselves to high standards, we won’t be simply picking any reasonably popular “sun” or “moon” related songs. Rather, we’re sticking strictly to songs that contain the word “eclipse,” in their title or lyrics with bonus points for “total eclipse.”

Consequently, there will be a few glaring omissions that are common in the other playlists.

For example, we reject Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” because a black hole sure ain’t an eclipse. If Sol (that’s the sun) went all black hole on us, no one would be standing outside a science center or on the roof of an office building wearing cheap plastic glasses staring into the sky. We’d more likely be collectively freaking out, making peace with our Preferred Deities and declaring our feelings, confessing transgressions and saying bye-bye to all our loved ones alongside some pointless, panicked looting to hoard toilet paper.

Also, there will be no “Bad Moon Rising,” another list staple included because the moon is just doing its thing, ya know? I mean, c’mon dude, can’t a natural satellite just maintain its orbit in peace without being labeled? Plus, who are we to judge whether it’s going about its celestial business badly or not? Have YOU ever orbited a planet for a few billion years? I think not.

So, with those basic guidelines in place, here are some tunes you can add to your “Path of Totality” playlist as you watch the moon get busy in the middle of the day.

1. “Total Eclipse of The Heart,” Bonnie Tyler (“Faster Than The Speed of Night”): OK, this one is easy and obvious. It’s doesn’t just have the word eclipse in the title and chorus, it’s got “total eclipse” which is chef’s kiss perfect. If only Tyler had found some way to include “path” and/or “totality” into this big power ballad, it would be even better. How about, “(Turn around) Every now and then I get a little bit angry, And I’ve got to leave the path of tota-lity.” Well, you get the idea.

2. “Eclipse,” Pink Floyd (“Dark Side of the Moon”): This tune’s another easy choice. The epic grand finale of Floyd’s classic-rock tome grows in intensity and ends with a big crescendo that has our word of the moment neatly tucked inside its final line. And, if you time it right, you can get that last line which, on April 8, will briefly become literal, to synchronize and give you a musical lift while you try not to fry your corneas. “And all that’s to come, And everything under the sun is in tune (Everything), But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.” It’s a more natural bit of synchronicity than “ Dark Side of Oz ” (syncing the album with the film “The Wizard of Oz”) and doesn’t require any form of recreational pharmaceuticals for it to actually work.

3) ”Total Eclipse,” Klaus Nomi (“Klaus Nomi”): The art-rock cult favorite, who spent some quality time in Akron decades ago , provides a perfect bit of funky, early ‘80s synthpop from his very unique debut album. The song will have you doing the hustle or even the bump if you have a partner, while you gaze intently at the heavens. “Total eclipse, it’s a total eclipse, It’s a total eclipse of the sun, Can’t come to grips with the total eclipse, Just a slip of your lips and you’re done,” Nomi chirps in his singular operatic falsetto and thick german accent.

4. “Total Eclipse,” Iron Maiden (“The Number of the Beast” reissue): This tune from the seminal, highly influential metal band that is still NOT IN THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME comes from the B-side of the “Run To The Hills” single and was added to the 1995 reissue of Maiden’s classic “The Number of The Beast.” The song continues the ominous association songwriters seem to have with eclipses. Over chugging guitars (of course), singer Bruce Dickinson details the dark effect an eclipse can have on folks. “Around the world, the people stop with terror-stricken eyes, A shadow cast upon them all to crush them like a fly, In the icy rain and whiplashed seas, there’s nowhere left to run, The hammer blows of winter fall, like a hurricane.” Yikes! Well, have fun watching “Mother Nature’s black revenge on those who waste her life,” everyone!

5. “Total Eclipse,” Bobby Hutcherson (“Total Eclipse”): This 1969 tune is from the legendary jazz vibist features pianist Chick Corea, saxophonist Harold Land and the rhythm section of Reggie Johnson and drummer Joe Chambers. They make this floating, loose grooving, post-bop piece a must for folks who don’t want their eclipse viewing all mucked up with other folk’s words. The song is nearly nine minutes long, while the “path of totality” viewing lasts for less than four. But it also makes a good soundtrack for reveling in the marvel of creation or calming your nerves as you walk back to your car and try to figure out how long you’ll be sitting in traffic trying to get home.

Instrumental Honorable Mentions: Drummer Billy Cobbham’s fusion tune “Total Eclipse” is a bit more uptempo and funky, as is Northeast Ohio favorite and jazz-rock organist Brian Augur’s simmering, lurching “Total Eclipse.” Alan Parson’s “Total Eclipse” from his “I Robot” album is more of an unsettling sound collage with ominous, deep crescendo-ing choir vocals, dissonant rising strings and morphing ‘70â€Čs synth weirdness, making it perfect for scaring children into thinking the world is ending (disclaimer: Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer does not endorse or encourage frightening children into believing the apocalypse is nigh).

6. “Eclipse,” John Denver (“Back Home Again”): The late “Rocky Mountain High” singer offers a soothing sonic balm for eclipse viewers until you listen to the lyrics. Denver doesn’t use the “e” word, but as with most the other songs involving eclipses, this ain’t an ode to the natural wonder of nature. Rather, it’s a lament for humanity’s attachment and devotion to its mechanical creations rather than taking time to appreciate all of creation. “Serenity’s a long time comin’ to me, The fact I don’t believe I know what it means, There’s a heavy smog between me and my mountains, It’s enough to make a grown man sit and cry, It’s enough to make you wonder, It’s enough to make the world roll up and die.” Well, at least the gentle acoustic guitar, ethereal flute and Denver’s clear voice are pretty.

7. “Eclipse,” with Kinai, San Joe, DaPaz & Fernanda Ouro ( Orgñnico Verão ): This R&B-infused pop-rap tune is one of the few songs where the eclipse imagery is a positive one. With a hip-hop-flavored beat and tranquil, pulsing guitar chords, the artists sing and rap of the vagaries of a should-I-stay-or-should-I-go” kind of love affair. It’s sung in Portuguese which with all those round vowels and and soft “s” sounds, tends to make every word sound a least a little sensual. “ In a beautiful spectacle when the eclipse arrived, We were able to see the alignment of a great love, Finally a moment happened (It happened), It took a while, but I saw that it was meant to be, it prevailed.” Ah, that’s a nice, heartwarming sentiment, isn’t it?

8. “Moon Eclipsed the Sun,” Evolfo (“Last of the Acid Cowboys”): This hip Brooklyn-based, neo-psych rock septet offers an angsty, twang-guitar laced, horn-laden toe-tapper about contemplating killing an untrustworthy lover, (at least I think that’s what it about) “Ain’t gonna be no shanananana, Or even shanananana, When the moon eclipse the sun, Then my baby is long gone.” Try not to be deterred by singer-guitartist Matt Gibbs exclusion of both the “shanananana” and the “shanananana,” it’s still a good groovy eclipse tune.

9. “The Eternal Eclipse,” Dark Funeral (“Where Shadows Forever Reign”): This one’s great if you’re a member of an apocalyptic cult looking for some machine gun-paced blast beats to soundtrack your once-in-a-lifetime total eclipse viewing experience. This Swedish death metal band certainly has what you need with this suitably dark and scary song with a wall of chainsaw-on-dumpster guitar riffs, precise double-kick drum madness and vocalist Heljarmadr screech-growling lyrics about being the King of nothing after the end of the world. “Towards the end, The world will again, Deform and transcend, The eternal eclipse, As we reach the end, No man will again, Reform or amend, For the apocalypse.” So break out the corpse paint and welcome the oncoming oblivion with a death growl!

10. “Kiss The Eclipse,” My Bloody Valentine (Sunny Sundae Smile”): The legendary and beloved shoegaze pioneers offer an uptempo rocker with the expected wall-of-way-loud guitars and buried-in-the-mix but deceptively hooky vocals. Sung by ex-singer-guitarist David Conway this sunny near pop-rock groove is a short, peppy slice of indie rock good for pogo-ing in your black/white/red Chuck Taylor’s while Conway brightly sings, “The sun never shines in her vacant eyes, Silencing you, my lips, Fall in love and kiss the eclipse.”

Song lyrics getting simpler, more repetitive, angry and self-obsessed – study

Researchers analysed the words in more than 12,000 English-language songs across several genres from 1980 to 2020

You’re not just getting older. Song lyrics really are becoming simpler and more repetitive, according to a study published on Thursday.

Lyrics have also become angrier and more self-obsessed over the last 40 years, the study found, reinforcing the opinions of cranky ageing music fans everywhere.

A team of European researchers analysed the words in more than 12,000 English-language songs across the genres of rap, country, pop, R&B and rock from 1980 to 2020.

Before detailing how lyrics have become more basic, the study pointed out that US singer-songwriting legend Bob Dylan – who rose to fame in the 1960s – has won a Nobel prize in literature.

Senior study author Eva Zangerle, an expert on recommendation systems at Austria’s University of Innsbruck, declined to single out an individual newer artist for having simple lyrics.

But she emphasised that lyrics can be a “mirror of society” which reflect how a culture’s values, emotions and preoccupations change over time.

“What we have also been witnessing in the last 40 years is a drastic change in the music landscape – from how music is sold to how music is produced,” Zangerle said.

Over the 40 years studied, there was repeated upheaval in how people listened to music. The vinyl records and cassette tapes of the 1980s gave way to the CDs of the 90s, then the arrival of the internet led to the algorithm-driven streaming platforms of today.

For the study in the journal Scientific Reports, the researchers looked at the emotions expressed in lyrics, how many different and complicated words were used, and how often they were repeated.

“Across all genres, lyrics had a tendency to become more simple and more repetitive,” Zangerle summarised.

The results also confirmed previous research which had shown a decrease in positive, joyful lyrics over time and a rise in those that express anger, disgust or sadness.

Lyrics have also become much more self-obsessed, with words such as “me” or “mine” becoming much more popular.

The number of repeated lines rose most in rap over the decades, Zangerle said – adding that it obviously had the most lines to begin with.

“Rap music has become more angry than the other genres,” she added.

The researchers also investigated which songs the fans of different genres looked up on the lyric website Genius.

Unlike other genres, rock fans most often looked up lyrics from older songs, rather than new ones.

Rock has tumbled down the charts in recent decades, and this could suggest fans are increasingly looking back to the genre’s heyday, rather than its present.

Another way that music has changed is that “the first 10-15 seconds are highly decisive for whether we skip the song or not,” Zangerle said.

Previous research has also suggested that people tend to listen to music more in the background these days, she added.

Put simply, songs with more choruses that repeat basic lyrics appear to be more popular.

“Lyrics should stick easier nowadays, simply because they are easier to memorise,” Zangerle said.

“This is also something that I experience when I listen to the radio.”

Drake Bell reveals he wrote the 2005 song 'In the End' about his experience with sexual abuse

  • Drake Bell said he was sexually abused as a child star in the new docuseries "Quiet on Set."
  • After the show premiered, Bell shared a TikTok about his 2005 song, "In the End."
  • "Wrote this song when I was 15 about what happened before I said anything to anyone," Bell wrote.

Insider Today

Drake Bell sang about the sexual abuse he suffered as a child star nearly two decades before the world would learn about his experience.

On Sunday, Bell shared a TikTok about "In the End," a deep cut from his 2005 debut album "Telegraph."

"Wrote this song when I was 15 about what happened before I said anything to anyone," Bell wrote in the caption.

"Another day, no one tells you what it means / What's in your way and poisoning your dreams / The darkest place that you've ever been," Bell sings in the pre-chorus.

The lyrics also reference "memories bringing you down" and "monsters in your head." Bell is the ballad's sole songwriter, according to credits provided to Spotify.

When "Telegraph" was released, Bell was at the peak of his teen-idol fame; the album also includes the popular track "Find a Way," which was used as the theme song for Bell's TV show "Drake & Josh," created by Dan Schneider for Nickelodeon .

Earlier this month, Bell appeared in the Investigation Discovery series " Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV " and spoke candidly about the trauma of child stardom. He revealed that he was sexually abused by Brian Peck , a Nickelodeon dialogue coach, who had befriended Bell on the set of " The Amanda Show ."

Shortly after Bell finished filming season two of "The Amanda Show" in 2003, Peck was arrested on 11 charges related to allegations that he'd sexually abused a child.

In May 2004, Peck pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and to oral copulation with a minor under 16. At the time, Bell remained anonymous as the minor involved in the case.

"Quiet on Set" marks the first time Bell has spoken publicly about Peck, who was sentenced to 16 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender in October 2004.

As BI's Kate Taylor previously reported , Bell said the docuseries gave him the chance to confront the "black ball of sludge" that had been "building, building, building" inside him for 25 years.

"If I'm going to tell my story," Bell told BI, "this is how it was supposed to be told."

A bonus fifth episode of "Quiet on Set," featuring a new interview with Bell, is set to air Sunday, April 7 at 8 p.m. ET on ID.

If you are a survivor of sexual assault, you can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-656-4673) or visit its website to receive confidential support.
