Surprise Albums: 16 Drops That Shocked The Music World

‘throwing copper’: how live fashioned a platinum-grade alt.rock classic.

The tour will celebrate the release of Florence Welch’s forthcoming, highly anticipated fifth album Dance Fever , out on May 13 . Florence has shared three songs from the album—“My Love,” “King” and “Heaven is Here” – all of which arrived alongside videos by the acclaimed director Autumn de Wilde with choreography by Ryan Heffington.

Additionally, Florence will play two very special, intimate shows this spring: April 29 in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Theatre and May 6 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York—both shows sold out in seconds.

Dance Fever was recorded in London over the course of the pandemic in anticipation of the world’s reopening. It conjures up what Florence missed most in the midst of lockdown—clubs, dancing at festivals, being in the whirl of movement and togetherness—and the hope of reunions to come.

Just before the pandemic Florence had become fascinated by choreomania, a Renaissance phenomenon in which groups of people—sometimes thousands—danced wildly to the point of exhaustion, collapse and death. The imagery resonated with Florence, who had been touring nonstop for more than a decade, and in lockdown felt oddly prescient.

The image and concept of dance, and choreomania, remained central as Florence wove her own experiences of dance—a discipline she turned to in the early days of sobriety—with the folkloric elements of a moral panic from the Middle Ages. In recent times of torpor and confinement, dance offered propulsion, energy and a way of looking at music more choreographically.

Starting, as ever, armed with a notebook of poems and ideas, Florence had just arrived to New York in March 2020 to begin recording when Covid-19 forced a retreat to London. Holed up at home, the songs began to transform, with nods to dance, folk, ‘70s Iggy Pop , longing-for-the-road folk tracks a la Lucinda Williams or Emmylou Harris and more, ultimately arriving somewhere that Florence describes as “Nick Cave at the club.” Lyrically, she took inspiration from the tragic heroines of pre-Raphaelite art, the gothic fiction of Carmen Maria Machado and Julia Armfield, the visceral wave of folk horror film from The Wicker Man and The Witch to Midsommar .

Dance Fever is an album that sees Florence at the peak of her powers, coming into a fully realized self-knowledge, poking sly fun at her own self-created persona, playing with ideas of identity, masculinity and femininity, redemption and celebration.

The famed singer had already confirmed a handful of U.K. and European live shows beginning in mid-April, including festival appearances at Nos Alive 2022 and Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival. She’s also set to play two standalone shows on April 29 in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Theatre and in New York City on May 6 at Alice Tully Hall. These won’t be modest productions — she’s taking over stadiums and amphitheaters alike, from New York’s Madison Square Garden to Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl.

The “King” singer will also bring on a smattering of opening acts to support her on the tour: Japanese Breakfast, King Princess, and Arlo Parks are among the star-powered musicians that will be sharing the stage during the run of dates.

The Dance Fever tour will be Florence + The Machine’s first tour in the U.S. since 2019’s High As Hope tour, so no doubt tickets will go fast. For everything you need to know about attending, including the full tour dates, location, and how to score those coveted tickets, read on.

Florence + The Machine to play ‘Lungs’ in full at orchestral London show

The band will make their BBC Proms debut at their only UK gig of 2024

Florence + The Machine performing live on stage in 2009

Florence + The Machine are set to play their debut album ‘Lungs’ in full at a special orchestral show in London – find all the details below.

The band will make their BBC Proms debut at the historic Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday September 11, marking Florence Welch and co’s only UK date of the year.

Welch announced the concert in a new interview with British Vogue . “When [the invitation] came in, they were like, ‘We know you’re off, but would you…?’ and I was like, ‘Yes!’,” she told the publication.

The outlet noted that the frontwoman was “currently on the hunt for old medieval English instruments” for the upcoming gig, which is dubbed ‘Florence + The Machine – Symphony Of Lungs’.

“I’m so honoured,” Welch continued. “The background to life in my house is classical music, and especially the more obscure things. So it’s a really exciting thing to be asked to do – the Proms is just so special.”

Released in 2009, the BRIT Award -winning ‘Lungs’ features the singles ‘Dog Days Are Over’, ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)’, ‘Cosmic Love’ and ‘You’ve Got The Love’.

But Welch explained that was she keen to revisit the more “swampy, south London, guitar-y” cuts from the record. “‘Girl With One Eye’ and ‘My Boy Builds Coffins’ and ‘Kiss With A Fist’,” she said. “It’s actually the ones you’d think wouldn’t work orchestrally that I’m interested to figure out.”

A listing on the Royal Albert Hall website reads : “For her Proms debut, [Welch] joins Jules Buckley and his Orchestra for a celebration of ‘Lungs’, and of the compelling poetry and music of this singular artist in whom the darkly gothic meets all that glistens.”

Tickets go on sale at 9am BST on Saturday May 18 – you’ll be able to buy yours here . They are priced between £26 and £80 (plus booking fee). Visit here for more booking information .

The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and recorded for a future airing on BBC Radio 1. It’ll also be shown on BBC Two and be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Welch said that looking back on ‘Lungs’ 15 years on was “a bit like reading an old diary” of a “messy, chaotic period of time”.

She added: “I think it’s just that psychological thing of knowing when Florence and the Machine was starting to pick up the pace. To be able to go back and revisit it from a more established place… it’s sort of healing, in a way.”

Florence + The Machine released their fifth and most recent album, ‘Dance Fever’ , in 2022. Shortly before it arrived, Welch explained that the record sounded like “‘Lungs’ with more self-knowledge” .

In other news, the singer has collaborated with Taylor Swift on a song called ‘Florida!!!’ from the latter’s new album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ .

The Song Lyrics

The meaning behind the song, personal reflection.

[Verse 1] In the darkest corners of my mind I find you waiting, love in disguise You dress in shadows, play devil’s games But I can’t resist, I’m drawn to your flame

[Chorus] Dream girl evil, you’re my sweetest sin Our love is twisted, but it’s where I begin Dream girl evil, you’re my deepest desire Into your darkness, I willingly retire

[Verse 2] You hold my heart in a vice-grip tight But I find solace in your power, in your night You’re the storm that rages, tearing me apart Yet I crave your chaos, it ignites my heart

[Bridge] In the depths of your eyes, I see the truth A mirror to my soul, a reflection of my youth You’re the beauty and the beast, darkness intertwined With you, dream girl evil, my spirit is aligned

Dream Girl Evil explores the complex emotions and experiences of being enthralled by someone who exudes a captivating darkness. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a love that is both alluring and destructive, embodying the concept of a “dream girl” who possesses an irresistible charm. Florence Welch’s powerful vocals convey the mesmerizing effect this person has on her, causing her to willingly embrace their darkness.

The song explores the metaphorical juxtaposition of light and dark, good and evil, and the interplay between them in the context of love. It delves into the notion that sometimes love can be found in the most unexpected and unconventional places, even when it is tinged with a sense of danger or uncertainty.

Florence + the Machine showcases their signature poetic lyrics in Dream Girl Evil, inviting listeners to reflect on the complexities of human relationships. It encourages us to question societal norms and embrace the contradictions that exist within ourselves and our connections with others.

Listening to Dream Girl Evil, I am transported to a time when I was captivated by someone who possessed a similar enigmatic allure. Their presence seemed to carry an enticing darkness that both attracted and frightened me. This song captures the conflicting emotions that swirled within me during that time, as I grappled with the desire to explore this relationship while acknowledging the potential risks it posed.

Dream Girl Evil serves as a reminder that life is rarely black and white. It encourages us to embrace the duality of our experiences, acknowledging that love can be found in unexpected places and that darkness can coexist with light. Florence + the Machine’s evocative lyrics and haunting melodies leave a lasting impression on listeners, urging us to embrace the complexities of love and self-discovery.

In conclusion, Dream Girl Evil by Florence + the Machine is a thought-provoking and introspective song that explores the intricate dynamics of love and darkness. Through powerful lyrics and mesmerizing vocals, Florence Welch invites listeners to examine the contradictions within themselves and their relationships. It serves as a reminder that love can sometimes be found in the most unconventional and unexpected places, even when shrouded in darkness.

BBC Proms to feature disco night and Florence + The Machine

The BBC has announced a bumper Proms season for 2024, with 90 concerts that mix traditional repertoire with concerts by Florence + The Machine, Sam Smith and Bristol's Paraorchestra.

After a lean period during Covid, international orchestras are back in full force, with performances from the Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris and the West-Eastern Divan.

And there will be a tribute to Sir Andrew Davis, the jovial conductor who led the Last Night concert on a dozen occasions, after his death last week.

Sir Andrew had been scheduled to conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra at Prom 54 in August, featuring works by Stravinsky and Schumann alongside a new work by Steve Reich.

The conductor, who was known for both his musicality and humorous speeches, died of leukaemia in Chicago on Saturday at the age of 80.

Proms director David Pickard said the shape of the tribute had yet to be decided, but "we will find a way of commemorating him and his marvellous work on the Proms".

"I think it will be extremely emotional for the orchestra because he was not only a brilliant musician, he was the loveliest man," he said. "We'll miss not only his music-making but frankly his smile, his laughter [and] his spirit of bonhomie.

"He's a real character that we've lost, and it's a great sadness."

This year is Pickard's last as director of the Proms, after nine years in charge.

His swansong is one of the most diverse programmes in years, reflecting BBC Radio 3's mission to engage new audiences in classical music.

That means storied pieces like Britten's War Requiem and Verdi's Requiem will rub shoulders with a Doctor Who Prom, a concert dedicated to folk-rock troubadour Nick Drake, and an evening of music by Pink Panther composer Henry Mancini.

Florence + The Machine will make her Proms debut, with a new orchestral arrangement of her debut album Lungs, while Sam Smith will give the same treatment to their debut In The Lonely Hour.

"This isn't an artist going into the Proms instead of Glastonbury," said Pickard. "It's an artist knowing about the orchestral setting of everything that we do, and creating something bespoke and exciting for us."

The opening night will take place on 19 July, with Hong Kong-born conductor Elim Chan leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra in performances of Beethoven's Symphony No 5 and Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks.

Pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason will also take to the stage, performing the piece she credits with launching her career: Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto.

"I discover something new each time I play it," said the 27-year-old. "It can be quite awkward pianistically, but... each time I come back to it, I'm more comfortable and have more freedom to express everything I feel about the music."

Other star soloists will include her brother, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, pianist Yo-Yo Ma, percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, South Korean prodigy Yunchan Lim and acclaimed violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja.

Following the success of last year's Northern Soul Prom, the second night of the 2024 season will be dedicated to the sounds of the 1970s disco scene.

"A little bit of me is very amused by the fact that, on the first night of the Proms we have Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and, on the second night, we have A Fifth Of Beethoven from Saturday Night Fever," said Pickard.

The disco night also raises the tantalising prospect that Bianca Jagger - who attended a performance of Mahler's Ninth at last year's Proms - will return to recreate the famous moment when she rode into the New York nightclub Studio 54 astride a white horse.

There will also be concerts in Gateshead, Belfast, Newport, Nottingham and Aberdeen, with a mini-season at Bristol's newest concert hall in August.

The Bristol Beacon will host a CBeebies concert and the Proms debut of the Paraorchestra - the UK's only ensemble made up of disabled and non-disabled musicians - performing Mozart's Symphony No 40 from memory.

Bristol will also mark the 100th anniversary of the BBC Singers, a year after they were threatened with closure due to budget cuts.

Rule, Britannia! to remain

The famed Last Night concert will be held at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 September, conducted by Sakari Oramo.

The Prom will continue to feature Rule, Britannia!, which has become increasingly controversial because of its lyrics, organisers confirmed earlier this week.

Last year, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason received a torrent of abuse for suggesting that it should no longer be played.

Sam Jackson, controller of Radio 3, described the reaction as "abhorrent" and "utterly unacceptable", but said the musician's discomfort with the song had made him "pause and reflect".

Speaking to the Radio Times, he said: "The challenge that we have at the BBC is that I could sit in a room full of people who feel exactly the same way as Sheku and I could sit in another room full of licence-fee payers who feel just as strongly, if not more so, that Rule, Britannia! is a crucial part of our culture and tradition.

"I would argue we have to do what is morally right at the BBC," he added. "We should never do things just because it's what other people might want. We have to do what is right."

Pickard said he would feel a "particular sadness" on his last Last Night in September, but promised to be back in the audience next year, when Jackson and Hannah Donat will take over the festival.

Speaking to BBC News, he chose the three concerts he's most looking forward to from his final programme:

  • Prom 42: Beethoven's Ninth by heart . "The Aurora Orchestra will be playing the whole symphony from memory in the second half of the concert - but before that, they will be explaining the piece and how it fits into Beethoven's life and the suffering he was going through with hearing loss."
  • Prom 2: Everybody Dance! The Sound of Disco . "This exactly what the Proms is about - surprising people. But if you listen to some of those disco songs, they were so orchestrally-driven."
  • Prom 45: Dalia Stasevska/BBC Symphony Orchestra . "This includes Julius Eastman's incredible Second Symphony, which has never been heard in this country before. And in the same concert, you'll get to hear Jamie Barton, the wonderful mezzo-soprano, singing Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder, which is full of the most beautiful poetry."

Every Prom will be broadcast live on Radio 3 and BBC Sounds for 12 months. Highlights and full concerts will also be shown on BBC TV and iPlayer over 24 separate broadcasts.

Tickets will be available from 18 May. On-the-day "Promming" tickets are £8 including booking fees, and seated tickets start from £10 plus booking fees.

Sam Smith to headline BBC Proms as bosses insist show will be ‘appropriate’

‘unholy’ singer and florence welch of florence + the machine have been selected as proms headliners, article bookmarked.

BBC Proms bosses have insisted that the show will be “entirely appropriate” after popstar Sam Smith was announced as a headliner for the classical music festival.

Sam Jackson, the Radio 3 and BBC Proms controller, has addressed concerns about whether the popstar’s performance would be suitable for the orchestral concert series.

Smith, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, is often criticised by conservative voices for their artistic and sexual expression. Last year, Smith faced backlash for the music video for their hit song “I’m Not Here to Make Friends”, with some labelling it as “pornographic”.

Jackson said: “We have worked very hard with Sam Smith and their management to see how we can create something authentically Proms, and the look and feel will be entirely appropriate for the audience in attendance.

Outgoing Proms director David Pickard , who previously programmed rapper Stormzy and dedicated a Prom to the 1960s pop star Scott Walker, said: “Popular music has always been part of the Proms. All these artists, when they are offered the opportunity to come to us at the Proms, know what they are buying into.”

Pickard reiterated that the Proms is not “another trip after Glastonbury” for pop acts invited to perform.

“This is something very special and we’re excited about the idea of opening up a different type of music to the Proms, but actually retaining the sense that this is an orchestral festival.

“And hopefully it will bring in the sort of audience that might not necessarily come to the Proms but now feel very welcome.”

Smith will be performing their 2014 debut album, In the Lonely Hour , which won four Grammys and features their acclaimed song “Stay With Me”.

Florence Welch of the indie pop band Florence + The Machine will be joining Smith as another headliner. Welch will perform her Brit Award-winning 2009 album Lungs alongside Grammy-winning composer Jules Buckley and his orchestra.

Smith will perform on 2 August and Welch will follow on 11 September.

The programme will also see Grammy award-nominated multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer Jordan Rakei collaborate with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Robert Ames to present tracks from his new album The Loop as well as music titles from his back catalogue.

The opening night will take place on 19 July, with Hong Kong-born conductor Elim Chan leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra in performances of Beethoven’s “Symphony No 5” and Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks”.

Other star soloists will include pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason and her brother, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and American cellist Yo-Yo Ma, percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, acclaimed violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim.

The Proms, which has been running since 1927, also features a selection of family events and concerts for children including a new Doctor Who Prom and a CBeebies Prom.

The programme will run from 19 July until 14 September and will feature 90 concerts in total – 73 taking place at the home of the festival, London’s Royal Albert Hall and 17 hosted at venues across the UK.

BBC Proms general booking opens on 18 May.

Taylor Swift shocker: New album, "The Tortured Poets Department," is actually a double album

By Alex Sundby , Brian Dakss

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 10:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Anticipation was growing at a fever pitch before Taylor Swift's latest album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," dropped at midnight EDT. But the pop superstar had a huge surprise on tap: It's actually a double album.

When Part One dropped, Swift wrote on Instagram , "All's fair in love and poetry... New album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Out now 🤍"

Then came the shocker, revealed in an Instagram post saying , "It's a 2am surprise: The Tortured Poets Department is a secret DOUBLE album. ✌️ I'd written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here's the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology. 15 extra songs. And now the story isn't mine anymore… it's all yours. 🤍."

What's Taylor Swift's new album about?

Swift described the album as "new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure."

She also said that time has been "closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted."

"Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Denny Directo called the record some of her most vulnerable work.

"Fans were left with more questions than there were answers, so good luck trying to decipher who these songs are about, what they mean," Directo told CBS News. "… I feel like there's more heartbreak songs on this than there are love songs."

Hours ahead of the record's release, Swift said on social media that its first single was "Fortnight," featuring Post Malone, and its music video was released Friday night .

Swift praised the Grammy-nominated artist's musical experimentation and melodies "that just stick in your head forever."

"I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight," Swift said in her post .

"Fortnight" isn't the only track on the album on which Swift worked with another artist. Florence and The Machine is also featured.

What's on "The Tortured Poets Department" tracklist?

Swift posted an initial tracklist to social media in February one day after she announced the album at  the Grammys , where she won for best pop vocal album. Here's the list of all 31 songs:

  • "Fortnight"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
  • "So Long, London"
  • "But Daddy I Love Him"
  • "Fresh Out the Slammer"
  • "Florida!!!"
  • "Guilty as Sin?"
  • "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"
