Disney Adventure (2025)

Disney Adventure, came as a bit of a surprise with the November 16, 2022 acquisition announcement of the partially completed ‘Global Dream’ vessel after the previous owner fell in to bankruptcy before completing the vessel. Disney Cruise Line was able to secure the project at a favorable price and within the capital expenditure guidance The Walt Disney Company provided on its recent earnings call . It was reported that Disney purchased the partially completed ‘Global Dream’ through insolvency for €40 Million with estimates of €1 Billion to complete .

DCL Early Concept Art Genting Dream Takeover

On March 29, 2023, it was announced the ship will exclusively home port in Singapore for at least five years beginning in 2025.

Disney Cruise Line And Singapore Tourism Board To Bring Magical

Disney is working with the esteemed Meyer Werft shipbuilding company to complete the cruise ship previously known as the ‘Global Dream’ in Wismar, Germany. On September 5, 2023, Disney Cruise Line revealed the ship will be named ‘ Disney Adventure ‘ during the 2023 Destination D23 event at Walt Disney World . Certain features will be reimagined under the world-renowned expertise of Walt Disney Imagineers and is expected to set sail in 2025.

DCL Disney Adventure Logo

The Disney Adventure will feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart. The exterior will be adorned in the iconic, Mickey Mouse-inspired colors of the fleet, complete with signature red funnels.

The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members.

Construction will be completed at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, and Disney Treasure. The ship’s previous owner filed for bankruptcy before completing the vessel, enabling Disney Cruise Line to secure it at a favorable price and within the capital expenditure guidance The Walt Disney Company provided on its recent earnings call. The project also secures employment for hundreds of former MV Werften employees and will provide opportunities for numerous maritime industry suppliers in the region.

When the construction halted at MV Weften at the beginning of 2022, the 208,000 GT Global Dream was three quarters complete. The cruise ship, which measures 342 meters (1,122 feet) in length, beam of 46.4m (152ft 3in), with a 9.5m (31ft 2 in) draft. Originally, the ship was designed to carry 9000 passengers.

The Global Dream was originally ordered on March 3, 2016, with the keel laid on September 11, 2018.

MV Werften Global Class

The new ship will feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart. Guests of all ages will find dedicated spaces and activities designed just for them, and families will create unforgettable memories with beloved characters such as Captain Mickey Mouse and Captain Minnie Mouse, Disney Princesses, Marvel Super Heroes and more.

Disney Cruise Line estimates the passenger capacity of the 208,000-gross-ton ship to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members. It is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. The propulsion will come from three azipods .

November 22, 2019, the 216 meters long central ship of the cruise liner “Global Dream” under construction was undocked from the MV shipyard in Warnemuende near Rostock, northeastern Germany. The first part of the ship was constructed in Warnemuende and was conveyed to Wismar, northeastern Germany, where it was transported on November 23, 2019 . Originally, the 342 meter vessel was designed to offer space for up to 9,500 passengers.

Construction is projected to be completed at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish and is constructing two additional Wish-class ships.

In late 2022, references to the name ‘ Global Dream ‘ transitions to ‘ Global One ‘ in media reporting. During a summer 2023 Castaway Club reception onboard the Disney Dream, the vessel was simply referred to as ‘ The Big One ‘. In documents publishes for the TWDC’s Q3 FY2023 Earnings report, the ship was referenced as the ‘ Acquisition ship ‘. Meyer listed the vessel as ‘ DISNEY HERO ‘ in a March 2023 Cruise Ship Reference catalog .

Disney Adventure Cruise Ship – What We Know So Far

Sharing is caring!

It has just been revealed that the new Disney Cruise Ship that DCL acquired will be named Disney Adventure.

The announcement was made by Thomas Mazloum on 9th December 2022 at D23. During his presentation, he said that this ship would be Disney Cruise Line’s “biggest adventure yet.”

We really don’t know very much yet about Disney Adventure, other than she will sail out of Singapore beginning in 2025.

However, it is a lot of fun to speculate on what this new, and most likely very different Disney Cruise ship will be like.

When the acquisition was originally announced, and after getting over the initial surprise that Disney Cruise Line had acquired an already 75% built cruise ship, I decided I wanted to do more research and start the process of really thinking about what the new ship might offer.

I have researched the original design and will discuss how Disney Cruise Line might put its own very individual Imagineering stamp on what is already a ship design that has many things already decided.

This article uses original concept art from the Global Dream.

It will be exciting to see how much things change when the Disney concept art starts to be released, probably sometime early in 2024.

  • The Challenge of Disney Adventure

This is the first time that Disney Cruise Line has been designing two ships at the same time.

There has been a lot of news recently about Disney Treasure, and details have been released about many aspects of her design.

Related Article : Disney Treasure – What We Know So Far

Most likely Disney Adventure will be very different from Disney Treasure and indeed, any of the existing Disney Cruise Ships.

It really has to be, as this was a ship that was already at a very advanced design stage.

However, the ship was acquired by DCL at a stage where interior design choices could still be made, and this is what will make the Treasure so recognizable as a Disney Ship.

It isn’t clear what exterior and other design features can be changed from the original. However, once you start looking in detail at the original Global Dream vision for the ship, you can see how this can be adapted to make this a unique, but still very distinctly Disney ship.

We can already see this from the very recognizable exterior design.

Whilst we can get some idea of the space, the design will most likely be very very different.

We really don’t know to what extent the build was complete or which design decisions can be changed.

All we know is that the ship was three-quarters of the way to being finished when DCL purchased the ship.

Disney Cruise Line reportedly paid the spectacularly low price of 40 Million Euros for the ship.

The original cost investment is said to have been around the $1 billion mark.

newdisneycruiseshipdesign

Whilst DCL appears to have secured a bargain, the investment doesn’t end there.

The costs of finishing the ship and making it part of the Disney fleet will be considerable.

Remember that everything here is unofficial and speculation, but it is so much fun to try and work out what this exciting new ship will be like.

The Disney Imagineers are going to have a wonderful time putting their own individual design into the ship.

And I really can’t wait to see it.

What Will The Ship Exterior Look Like?

How many funnels, just how big will the new ship really be, where will the new disney cruise ship sail, what will the disney adventure staterooms be like, restaurants on the new disney ship, a theme park at sea, will disney adventure have escalators, bars on the ship, will the ship have a casino, what shows will she have, kids clubs on disney adventure, adult spaces – what will they be like, what will the spa be like, shopping on disney adventure, technology on the new disney ship, what will concierge be like on the new disney ship, final thoughts.

Join the Disney Adventure Cruise Group!

This one is probably one of the easiest to answer – as to the overall look of the exterior, this is the only concept art that Disney has released so far.

This is what the original Global Dream ship was to look like:

disney cruise ship adventure

As you can see, the original design looked, well, it looked like a very large cruise ship with no other particular branding features.

MV Wertfen Concept Art

Then along comes Disney.

disney cruise ship adventure

Obviously, it still looks enormous, because it really is, but now it has the distinctive Disney Cruise Ship exterior features.

I think it will be difficult to appreciate just how much bigger Disney Adventure is than the other ships in the DCL fleet until we actually see her for the first time.

This took me a while to see but is now glaringly obvious.

Look closely at the original Global Dream concept art. You can see one funnel, which effectively is one but this is split into two.

The original Disney Adventure concept art had three funnels, instead of the two which every other Disney cruise ship has.

However, look at the new concept art released in September 2023.

A funnel has disappeared.

disney cruise ship adventure

You can see though that the split funnel, just as it was on the original design of Global Dream is now a feature on Disney Adventure.

This is very different to the other Disney Cruise ships.

But you can see how it will make a lot of sense as it will allow a very different design on the pool deck.

The forward funnels are not mechanically necessary and are for aesthetics. But just as on the other Disney Cruise ships the funnel will have a practical use.

On Disney Wish and the new Disney Treasure the forward funnel is the Tower Suite. With the funnel being split does this mean that there will be two Tower Suites on Disney Adventure?

One of the most surprising things about the new ship is just how very very large it is.

In the past, DCL has not been known as a big ship cruise line.

But now, they will be operating one of the largest cruise ships in the world.

You can see from the chart below, the sizes of each of the current Disney cruise ships

As you can see from the comparison chart, the new ship is a whole lot larger than the other Disney ships.

In fact, Disney Adventure is huge.

I don’t think that we will be able to appreciate just how big she is until we catch our first sight of her.

The only ships that will be larger, once she sails sometime in 2025, are the new Royal Caribbean Oasis Class ships.

newdisneshiprestaurants

RCCL Oasis Class ships will still hold the title of largest passenger ships, even when the new Disney Adventure cruise ship is launched.

Wonder of the Seas is 235,600 gross tonnes, 1,118 feet wide, and has the capacity for 5,734 passengers at double occupancy and 7,084 at maximum capacity.

So the new Disney ship will not win the prize for being the largest ship at sea – but it will certainly be pretty close.

It was announced on March 29, 2023, that the new Disney Cruise ship will have her homeport in Singapore for at least 5 years beginning in 2025.

The Asian cruise market is one of the most rapidly expanding market sectors.

So it makes a lot of sense that Disney wants to expand into this area.

Of course, we already know how incredibly popular Disney Australia and New Zealand cruises are.

They were mostly sold out almost as soon as they were released.

There has not been any announcement about the Disney Cruise ship itineraries from Singapore and it may well be not until 2024 until these are made known.

One thing does seem to be certain.

A cruise ship of this size is not designed for tender boats. This cuts down the number of possibilities for ports to visit.

We can see from the concept art that aside from the obvious missing Disney design touches, the layout is similar to the existing Disney ships.

This design shown below looks as though it will be relatively easy just to add the Disney design touches and it will be a beautiful stateroom that will very much fit in with the aesthetic of the existing DCL ships, particularly Disney Wish and Treasure.

It is always in the attention to detail that Disney ships excel. No doubt there will be many design touches that make the staterooms stand out and have that distinctively Disney magic.

newdisneyshipstateroom

It will be interesting to see if the new interior design has the differently themed staterooms as Disney Wish does.

This does seem to have been a popular feature so it is highly likely we will see this on the new Disney Adventure ship as well.

Interestingly the ship design already incorporated a stateroom design feature which is an important part of Disney’s stateroom design.

The split bathroom.

disneycruisenewbathroom

This bathroom arrangement is a rare feature on cruise ships, but it is a great one, so it’s good that this will be on the new ship as well.

The existing stateroom design also has a thick curtain to separate the living and sleeping space.

This is another idea that seems to have been inspired by Disney design as surprisingly not many staterooms have this on other cruise lines.

It seems like such an obvious feature to include, but I can’t think of any other cruise line that does.

Another design feature that may be incorporated is the convertible sofa bed.

Unlike other Disney ships, the original design was for a double convertible sofa, rather than the usual single with a bunk above.

It looks like a good idea, but may not fit in with the design concept for Disney, although it would be great for older kids and even other adults staying in the stateroom.

It isn’t known if the bed will be and Queen be which is able to be split into two twins.

This is a feature that you find on many other cruise lines, but none of the other ships in the Disney fleet have this facility.

disney cruise ship adventure

Another feature that most likely will be retained from the original design is the control panel technology.

This allows you to set different mood lighting.

There is even a light in the ceiling that can be used as a wake-up call alarm. It progressively increases light so that you wake up naturally.

disneynewshiptechnology

Nothing is yet known about how many inside, outside, balcony, and concierge staterooms there will be.

My guess is that there will be a high proportion of concierge staterooms and suites on Disney Adventure.

One of the original concept art drawings seems to suggest that there will be a balcony stateroom type which will be unique in the Disney Cruise fleet. A stateroom that will have a balcony but that will look over an internal space.

disney cruise ship adventure

There really aren’t any clues in the concept design for Global Dream about what the restaurants on Disney Adventure will be.

disney cruise ship adventure

Here is the original art which shows the area for a buffet.

One thing is certain.

There will be a buffet!

Will it be called Marceline Market as it is on the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, and most likely will be for the third Triton Class ship?

That is a possibility.

I think that whilst this new ship will be very different from the others, there will be a sense of continuity as well, and having familiar names, even though the spaces may be very different, will go some way to achieving that fleet-wide “branding”.

newdisneycruiseshipbuffett

It is likely that Disney Adventure will follow the pattern of all the other Disney Ships of having three rotational dining restaurants.

Obviously, they are going to have to be a lot larger to serve the increased number of guests.

But is unlikely that there will be more than three. Not only do you have to think about the logistics and expense of having additional restaurants, but also it wouldn’t work well if there are ever any plans to have three or four-night cruises, and you have four or five restaurants.

Part of the genius of the rotational restaurant idea is that each guest can experience each main dining restaurant at least once.

If you had more restaurants it might be that guests had to skip one or two.

This really wouldn’t be a great guest experience. Imagine the disappointment if you boarded the ship and found that your favorite restaurant wasn’t even on your rotation.

disney cruise ship adventure

I would be surprised if this part of the tried and tested Disney Cruise Line dining formula was changed at all.

Themes for the restaurants on Disney Adventure?

newdisneyshipspecialtyrestaurant

Likely a stylish nostalgia restaurant, a Princess movie-themed restaurant, and perhaps even a second movie franchise-themed restaurant.

Possibly a repeat of the theme of the Marvel restaurant which is on the Wish and Treasure – let’s just hope if that happens the concept is refined and improved.

A Star Wars restaurant?

I am going to bet on a no on that one. I am sure many will disagree with me, but Star Wars probably just isn’t popular enough for a ship that is going to be sailing in Asia.

What is a very sure bet is that there will be at least two additional high-end restaurants which will have an additional charge. Probably more.

All the Disney ships have Palo, so maybe one will follow the tradition for continuity. Enchante seems unlikely and I would bet on a totally different concept for the ultra-fine dining restaurant on Disney Adventure.

I think it is likely that there will be more than two extra charge restaurants, and that the capacity will be proportionately higher than on the other ships.

I would expect to see more of a variety of specialty restaurants and smaller extra-charge dining venues. We are seeing this on Disney Treasure with Heihei Cafe and The Jade Cricket Cafe.

The Disney Dream introduced the first water coaster at sea.

The AquaDuck was also incorporated into the Disney Fantasy design.

The Disney Wish aimed to do something different and improve on this with the AquaMouse. Disney Treasure will also have the AquaMouse but with a different story.

However, the AquaMouse is still really essentially the same design, and some would say not as good as the AquaDuck.

The new Disney ship is likely to be very different indeed.

disneyshiprollercoaster

Disney Adventure will have a roller coaster at sea.

Such a thing is not unique. The Carnival Mardi Gras has the world’s first.

But a roller coaster at sea is still not a very common attraction on a cruise ship.

Dream Cruises was working with the same designer as the Mardi Gras coaster to develop the attraction for the ship.

It seems likely that Disney will continue the same company.

It was reported that the track is 984 feet long and has a top speed of 37 miles per hour.

Not an incredibly fast roller coaster, but this is over the ocean so the thrill level may come from the scenery too!

It will certainly be a very different experience than the AquaDuck.

disneynewcuiseshipexterior

The ride vehicles can accommodate two people and riders will be able to control the speed of the ride with an integrated throttle.

The acceleration system was set to allow 1G over most of the track.

The Global Dream concept also included an “activity park”.

The original design was supposed to incorporate a trampoline, a bungee trampoline, a board surf simulator and a mini go-kart track for the younger ones.

disney cruise ship adventure

It is likely that Disney will put more of its personal spin on the design of this area.

It’s difficult to change a roller coaster design on the top of the ship, but you can certainly move or indeed cancel the order for a trampoline.

Right now, to me, the design of this area looks very like a Royal Caribbean ship.

However, I imagine the finished concept will look very different from this – there are so many Disney design elements that can be incorporated here.

The view below seems to be from a very large private deck – perhaps the Walt Disney Suite?

You can see an area here that looks like a huge auditorium will staged seating.

Perhaps the new concept for Funnel Vision? Although without the funnel!

disneycruisenewshipsuite

There is another area that shows a large lawned area that reminds me of the Celebrity Solstice Class ships.

It also shows the roller coaster track – might be a great place to people-watch!

disneycruisenewshiplawn

You can see also how the funnel is split into two halves.

The pool deck will also have multiple water slides. This almost looks like it could be an adult-only area, but then it seems that the water slide exits to here so that isn’t going to work as a no kids allowed space.

disneynewshipswimmingpool

Maybe the jacuzzis could be converted into a small pool for the kids?

Or maybe we can leave them just the way they are as you can never have too many jacuzzis on a ship – particularly one with 6,000 guests?

The pool deck on Disney Wish was a change from the other ships as there were more pools which are smaller.

It seems that Disney Treasure will follow this design too.

What we can see from the Disney Adventure design is that it is likely that there will be many pools and hot tubs on board.

Anyone who has sailed on Disney Wish knows the importance of getting the elevators right.

At least now they have sorted out the buttons on the elevators on the Wish so that you actually have to press them rather than them being triggered by any slight movement!

But what if you had something very very different for a cruise ship?

Escalators.

disneycruiseshipescalators

The original design of the ship had eight sets of escalators on the ship.

This is probably something that a 75% finished ship has to keep.

No doubt there will have to be many elevators as well, but it will certainly be interesting to see if there will be escalators on a Disney ship!

Perhaps there will be a Star Wars Bar.

Maybe it will even sell that $5,000 drink …

Below is the original design for one of the bars. Might want to rethink the slogan!

newdisneycruisebars

The space below could very easily be changed into a Disney theme of some kind.

baronnewdisneyship

The concept art below reminds me of the Ooh La La on Disney Fantasy.

With more of a Disney’s Animal Kingdom vibe!

Maybe an animatronic zebra. Just kidding.

newdisneycruiseshipbars

There are so many ideas for themes for bars.

Open up the Disney movie vault, or base some ideas on Disney theme park attractions, and the possibilities are many.

None of the other Disney ships have a casino and my first reaction is a very definite no it won’t.

But my second reaction is a maybe?

disneyshipcasino

It would certainly be a money maker – and the original ship was designed to have a casino as a significant part with a large space dedicated to it.

However, it just isn’t Disney.

Related: Is there Gambling on Disney Cruises?

Perhaps now that Disney is now back in the safer hands of Bob Iger I am right to go with my first reaction. The core values will hopefully be adhered to and the casino space will be dedicated to something much more family-focused.

We already know that there is a large theater and a movie theater on board.

Obviously, a huge part of the Disney Cruise experience is the amazing entertainment and stage shows.

newdisneyshiptheater

It will be interesting to see if they have all new shows on the ship.

That seems doubtful though.

Disney is already developing one new show for Disney Treasure. Then it will most likely develop another original show for the as yet un-named new Disney Triton Class ship.

If they had three original shows for Disney Adventure that would mean developing five new shows for 2025.

That is very unlikely.

Perhaps they will have at least one show that is exclusive to that ship, but I would guess that there will be an existing show as well.

Production and development costs are high for Disney, so they will likely stick with what they know and use at least one show they already have.

Expectations are always incredibly high for Disney entertainment. Of course, this is as it should be, as they are so far and beyond other cruise lines with their Broadway-quality shows.

However, if you look at other cruise lines they also repeat shows across the fleet, and it is rare that there is a show that is exclusive to just one ship.

But people always seem to be disappointed when a new Disney ship is launched and they don’t have all new shows.

newdisneyshiptheater

Will they have Pirate Night?

That is something that is a core part of the Disney Cruise experience, but will it be on the new ship? I think it is highly likely it will.

As with all the Disney ships, there will be some amazing kids’ clubs.

There is a very successful formula for getting the kid’s spaces right – and it is likely that the new ship will follow the pattern of splitting them into the usual age categories.

This area below was in the original ship design. Will this be a place for younger kids to play with adult supervision?

This shows that there are balcony staterooms with an interior view. This is very like the design of some of the Royal Caribbean Cruise ships.

This would be a first for Disney Cruise Lines.

disneyshipkidsarea

Disney Cruise Line always dedicates a lot of space for adults only.

I know that Disney is always seen as a cruise line for families, and it certainly is that, but it is also very good at getting things right in the provision of space and things to do for the grown-ups.

The ship will have a space dedicated to those over 18.

It will probably follow the tried and tested format of being in one dedicated part of the ship and include a pool (hopefully more than one), jacuzzis, a large pool deck space, possibly with pay-to-use cabanas, and a spa.

There will be many bars on the ship. It will be interesting to see if they are kept in a dedicated space, like on most of the ships, or spread out more, as on the Disney Wish.

Likely they will be all over the ship as this is probably how it was originally designed. Themed bars are a fair bet, but it’s not a slam dunk that there will be a Star Wars-themed one.

Expect that a large area of the ship will be devoted to shopping malls.

It is likely that a very large space will be devoted to the spa on the new ship.

spaonnewdisneyshipconcept

I would guess that a large part of the space will be dedicated to The Rainforest.

This is a relaxation room on all of the Disney ships which has a separate charge.

newrainforestdisneyship

It is very successful on the other ships as spaces usually fill up, so no doubt the concept will be expanded upon in this ship.

Nothing is yet known about what shops Disney Adventure will feature.

However, we do know that the original Global Dream would have had 18,000 square feet of retail space. That’s a lot.

I think we can expect the usual Disney store areas, but there will be a lot of high-end stores as well.

It seems as though this will be a bit step forward on Disney Adventure.

The original design incorporated new technology which seems a safe bet that Disney will have on the ship.

disney cruise ship adventure

This includes being able to open your door with an app on your phone.

Perhaps they will have a Magic Band type system which means you will be able to charge everything with this as well and use it for virtual lines.

This kind of technology is already on Princess Cruise Line ships with the Medalion.

That is very convenient to unlock your door automatically when you approach, as well as charging everything by tapping the medallion on the console.

Within the Princess app, there is a food and beverage ordering system which is great, most of the time ( sometimes it really doesn’t work).

There is so much scope for how this could make life on board just a little bit better.

It would be good if this technology can extend to virtual lines for popular attractions and activities. It would be nice not to have to stand in line for the roller coaster for 2 hours with your fellow guests out on the sun deck!

More than anything, more than any fancy thing that opens my door or gives lighting effects in my stateroom, what I really really hope for is that the internet connection is going to be amazing. And reasonably priced.

disney cruise ship adventure

Over the years Disney Cruise Line has shown an increased commitment to dedicating more space on the ships which is exclusive to Concierge passengers.

The whole Disney Concierge concept really started pretty low-key with Disney Magic and Wonder.

The Classic Disney ships always had concierge staterooms but they were few, and there was no dedicated space for passengers.

A Concierge Lounge was subsequently added to the Magic and Wonder with the number of staterooms currently at 34.

When the Dream and Fantasy were built the design incorporated more Concierge staterooms with 40 in total.

The concept was also taken a step further with a completely dedicated closed-off space for the staterooms, a lounge, and an outdoor deck area.

disneycruiseconciergeoutdoor

The Disney Wish took the Concierge concept up a notch or two. Disney dedicated 79 staterooms to Concierge passengers on the Wish and now Disney Treasure, including the Royal Suites and the unique Tower Suite which is located in the funnel.

It is highly likely that the new Disney ship will have even more space dedicated to Concierge.

It seems likely that Concierge will be more like the “ship within a ship” concept seen on many Norwegian Cruise Line ships. This is now becoming a more common concept with Princess Cruise Line introducing this on the Sun Princess.

The original concept art for the Global Dream shows an area called “The Palace” which is dedicated to Concierge passengers only.

You can see from this concept art that the design was meant to be a large exclusive inside and outside space.

disney cruise ship adventure

The Concierge Suites were said to be an average of 40 square meters which is equivalent to 430 square feet.

It was intended that at least some of these staterooms would be suites with two bedrooms.

It isn’t clear how many staterooms, or the different types of staterooms within this section, the original design incorporated.

disney cruise ship adventure

The outside Concierge space is likely to be much larger than on any other Disney Cruise Ship.

Below you can see the original concept.

It will be interesting to see how Disney adds their individual styling to it, but I would imagine a lot of this will remain the same.

disney cruise ship adventure

The space shown below also seemed to be shown as part of the Concierge area on the ship.

I have to admit I really don’t see the concept of those chairs!

disneyconciergeloungenewship

Disney Adventure will have a unique place in the Disney Cruise Line family.

Her acquisition was unique as she was not a Disney concept from start to finish.

But Disney Cruise Line will put their very own special design features on this new ship, from the big right down to the small details that make them so unique.

It will be fascinating over the coming months to see all of the details revealed, and then to experience a cruise onboard Disney Adventure.

Disney Adventure Review

Review of disney adventure.

The 2025-built (as Global Dream) cruise ship Disney Adventure is currently under construction in Germany, being built by Meyer Werft Wismar for DCL-Disney Cruise Line . This is the first of two GLOBAL class units ordered by GHK-Genting Hong Kong Ltd (1993-founded/2022-defunct) for the holding company's Asian subsidiaries/brands Dream Cruises and Star Cruises . The first liner (Global Dream) was scheduled for launch in 2020 (inauguration in December) but, due to the Coronavirus crisis was postponed for 2022-Q1.

The second vessel (unnamed sistership/IMO 9808998) was planned for Star Cruises and scheduled for launch and inauguration in 2023) but its name was never announced. After GHK filed for bankruptcy (on January 19, 2022), Global Dream's construction was halted/paused. Reportedly, at the time, the vessel was ~70% completed.

By passenger capacity (9500 max plus 2200 crew, or total 11700 as originally designed/total 2350 staterooms), GHK's GLOBAL-Class represented the world's largest cruise liners ever built .

The vessel (IMO number 9808986) will be Bahamas- flagged (MMSI number tba) and registered in Nassau .

With redesigned max passenger capacity ~6000 (plus ~2300 crew), Disney Adventure is expected to enter service for DCL in 2025, with inaugural deployment in East Asia and homeporting in Singapore . The Maiden Voyage's date and itineraries are yet to be announced.

History - construction and ownership

On June 11, 2022, Christoph Morgen (GHK's MV Werften's insolvency administrator) announced that the unfinished sistership (the second GLOBAL-class unit/"Global Dream 2") will be sold for scrap. The unit had a completed lower hull with installed machinery (Including the engines) and some of the systems. The plan was for the installed systems and machinery to be removed and sold, and the half-finished hull to be separately sold at scrap prices.

On October 6, 2022, NDR 1 Radio MV (part of NDR-Norddeutscher Rundfunk German news agency) reported that the unfinished (~75-80% completed) mega-liner could be purchased by DCL-Disney Cruise Line . In an interview, Christoph Morgen said that there are purchase negotiations with DCL. The vessel will be completed in Wismar (under Meyer Werft's Papenburg yard's management) and could be delivered/inaugurated in 2024-Q4.

While the possible purchase price was not mentioned, the previously stated shipbuilding cost was EUR 1,6 billion. DCL's purchase interest was not officially announced, but on October 4th, Reinhard Meyer (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister of Economics, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labor) mentioned "confidential negotiations" and that completing Global Dream will secure the employment of MV Werften Wismar's ~950 former employees. Global Dream's construction was suspended in January 2022 when MV Werften filed for bankruptcy.

Industry experts commented that with Global Dream Disney might enter the Asian market.

Disney Adventure cruise ship (Global Dream/GHK Genting)

On November 16, 2022, DCL officially confirmed Global Dream's acquisition. The purchase of the unfinished vessel was announced by Josh D'Amaro (Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences & Products). On November 30th was announced that Disney acquired the unfinished vessel (originally valued at EUR 1,8 billion) for just EUR 40 million.

Disney took over the vessel without warranty claims and stated that would complete/rebuild the liner at its own risk and expense, planning to invest ~EUR 1 billion for its conversion. It was commented that the cheap sale could result in a failure of the guarantees given for this shipbuilding project. Reportedly, GHK-Genting had taken out loans of EUR 650+ million from a consortium of 16 banks for Global Dream. To a large extent, the loans' repayment was secured by guarantees from the federal (Germany's) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state governments.

The ship's new name (Disney Adventure) was officially announced on September 9, 2023.

DCL-Disney Cruise Line is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (shipowner). The company was incorporated in 1996 as "Magical Cruise Company Ltd". Walt Disney also owns the Bahamian private island Castaway Cay (exclusive port of call - for Disney ships only), an exclusive Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral (Orlando) Florida USA and the exclusive Lighthouse Point (privately-developed cruise resort complex on Eleuthera Island, Bahamas). Disney cruises are marketed as "family vacations" and feature unique and exclusive activities, such as costumed Disney Characters, adults-only deck areas, dedicated facilities for teens, kids and infants-toddlers, signature (trademarked) shipboard facilities and activities, themed live entertainment.

GHK was a global entertainment, hospitality, and leisure company based in Hong Kong . It ordered two cruise vessels to be custom-built to serve the Asian market, specifically China. With the new Dream Cruises brand, the company started to offer a separate brand for each of its market segments, with the other two being Crystal Cruises (luxury segment) and Star Cruises (contemporary segment).

The financing package for both Global Class units (EUR 2,6 billion / ~EUR 1,3 billion per vessel) was structured by KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH as part of a consortium which also included BNP Paribas (France), Citibank (USA), Credit Agricole Group (France), DescriptionCredit Suisse Group AG (Switzerland) and DescriptionDNB ASA (Norway). The newbuilds are planned for assembly at 3 different MV Werften-owned shipyards. GHK's total investment in this shipbuilding project is ~EUR 3,1 billion (~USD 3,44 billion). The package was backed/guaranteed by Finnvera (Finland).

What is known so far is that the Global Dream ship will be China-deployed the whole year-round leaving on roundtrips from homeport Shanghai . Between April 2019 and March 2020, in Shanghai was also homeported the fleetmate Explorer Dream (managed by Star Cruises). The new Dream Cruises ship Global Dream will be homeported in China during summer, and during winter - in either Australia or the USA-Caribbean.

With GT 204,000 tons and max passenger capacity 9500, Global Dream is one of the largest passenger liners in the world . For comparison, the ever-largest ( Royal Caribbean 's Oasis-Class) have GT tonnage 228,000 tons.

MS Disney Adventure ship waterslides (top deck)

In May 2019 were unveiled more GHK GLOBAL-Class vessel details. They are designed to have the industry's first Theme Park at Sea, the largest Cinema at Sea, the world's longest Roller Coaster at Sea, the industry's largest standard-category staterooms (sized 20 m2), Panoramic Atrium elevators (glass-walled and bottomed lifts) plus 8x 2-lane escalators,as well as self-guided robotic assistants.

The ship's Roller Coaster (named "Space Cruiser Coaster") is the main attraction of the "Dream Park at the Pier" (company's first "theme park" concept), which also includes a bouncing activity area, a separate trampoline park, various Aqua Park facilities (including surfing simulator and racing waterslides).

MS Disney Adventure ship Roller Coaster (Space Cruiser)

Space Cruiser has 300 m (985 ft) long track and 3 Spike carts (with positive locking devices and powerful electric motors). The roller coaster allows 1+ G (gravitational acceleration almost everywhere on track) and max speed 60 kph (37 mph). Each Spike cart accommodates max two riders (inline seats) and features an integrated throttle control of the speed.

Fun fact is that the Space Cruiser Coaster was first constructed on land for testing. Once completed, the roller coaster was dismantled and transported to MV Werften's shipyard for final assembly. The roller coaster's s builder ( Munich Germany -based company Maurer AG / fka Maurer Sohne GmbH und Co KG) specializes in steel construction and roller coaster manufacturing. Space Cruiser Coaster's design is based on Maurer's trademarked "Spike Coaster" (powered coaster) driven by a rack (counter-toothing / row of gear teeth fixed along the track) and pinion (gear on the vehicle that propels it down the track).

MS Global Dream's facilities include:

  • Town Square
  • Zouk Beach Club
  • Red Tail Social Games Lounge
  • Horizon Lounge
  • Dream Avenue (multi-purpose outdoor avenue / in-ship Promenade)
  • Multiplex Cinema (a complex of 8 theaters, each convertible to a venue for group meetings and themed events)
  • The Palace - luxury "ship-within-a-ship" concept
  • Luxury Suites
  • DFS-T Gallery at Sea (Duty-Free Shops)

MS Global Dream has a huge duty-free shopping mall (DFS-T Gallery at Sea) operated via partnership between Genting Cruise Lines, DFS and Starboard Cruise Services. DFS Group (1960-founded, Hong Kong China -based travel retailer) and Starboard Cruise Services (1958-founded premier cruise retailer) are both subsidiaries of LVMH (1987-founded, Paris France -headquartered multinational). The onboard retail shops cover an area of ~18000 ft2 (1680 m2) and sell ultra-premium merchandise in the categories Food & Gifts, Beauty & Fragrance, Fashion & Accessories, Watches & Jewelry, with product introductions, brand-firsts and unique promotions.

In late July 2020, Dream Cruises debuted (on MS Explorer Dream) the "Flexi-Feast" - a completely customized shipboard dining (food and beverage) concept that allows passengers to choose from more venues. Upon boarding the ship, cruisers receive a set of complimentary dining vouchers which can be used at designated restaurants, as well as OBC (onboard credits) for ordering meals at specialty restaurants, beverages at bars and also for room-service orders.

Itineraries

In March 2023, Disney Cruise Line signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Singapore Tourism Board for homeporting the ship in Singapore (at Marina Bay Cruise Centre) for at least 5 years, starting in 2025 (through 2030).

In this period (2025-2030) DCL-Disney doesn't intend to deploy the new liner in regions operated with homeporting in the USA.

Disney commented that Singapore's strategic location, modern cruise port infrastructure, and international airport connections make it Southeast Asia's best hub for the cruise tourism industry, with a great potential to add millions of both local and foreign cruisers during the 5-year homeporting period.

Disney Adventure's Maiden Voyage and the inaugural season's itineraries (the exact Asian ports, as well as the relocation voyage from Europe to Asia/RepositionCruises.com) are to be announced sometime in 2024.

The package was backed/guaranteed by Finnvera (Finland).

Disney Adventure cruise ship (Global Dream/GHK Genting)

On March 8, 2018, the vessel's construction officially started with the steel-cutting ceremony held at MV Werften's shipyard in Bremerhaven Germany . Initially, the ship (hull number 125) was allocated to the sister-brand Star Cruises. The shipowner GHK also has an order for a second (Global-class) unit set for delivery in 2021. There were speculations about this one could also be built for Dream Cruises. The shiporder has optional 2 more units of the same class.

On March 8, 2018, MV Werften actually conducted two steel-cutting ceremonies - one at the Wismar Shipyard and another at the Warnemunde-Rostock Shipyard . The vessel's production takes place in both yards, with final assembly in Wismar. The construction process involves around 600 companies (subcontractors / equipment producers and suppliers). The steel-cut ceremonies were attended by Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK's CEO and Chairman).

On July 31, 2018, the shipbuilder MV WERFTEN Wismar GmbH contracted Almaco Group to install the new ship's staterooms (pre-fabricated cabin modules) and other equipment. By this deal, Almaco will install all the Wismar Shipyard-produced staterooms (all passenger and crew cabins), various crew-only areas, hallways and staircases. Almaco will manufacture and supply all the ship's suite cabins, which will be installed at the Warnemunde-Rostock Shipyard. The contract was signed by Esko Karvonen (Almaco's CEO).

On September 11, 2018, at the Warnemunde-Rostock Shipyard was held the vessel's keel-laying ceremony, with which officially started its construction. During the special event was lifted and placed the first keel block (bottom hull section) with length 22 m (72 ft), width 26 m (85 ft) and weight 410 tons. This section is nearly half of the entire keel. A total of 30 large-sized sections were pre-fabricated and assembled in Stralsund and subsequently shipped to Wismar for final assembly. At Wismar Shipyard's outfitting quay was installed (specially purchased for GHK's Global-class project) a 125 m (410 ft) high gantry crane.

The ship's midsection (length 216 m, height 57 m, consisting of 145 blocks) was preassembled at WERFTEN Rostock and towed (November 22-23, 2019) to WERFTEN Wismar - approx 80 km to the southwest. The towing was conducted by 5 tugboats.

On October 26, 2018, MV WERFTEN Wismar GmbH signed a deal with two Turku Finland -based companies (Deltamarin and Elomatic) which were contracted to provide GLOBAL-Class vessel's design. The contracts; values were ~EUR 16,5 million for Deltamarin Ltd (specializing in ship design, offshore engineering and construction support) and ~EUR 17 million for Elomatic (marine engineering and consulting and software development). Both companies were contracted also to provide shipyard services during the vessel's construction. Both contracts were signed by Janne Uotila (Deltamarin's CEO) and Patrik Rautaheimo (Elomatic's CEO).

In 2018-2020, the Star Cruises liner SuperStar Libra was permanently berthed in Wismar and used as ship hotel for the personnel (yard workers and contractors) involved in GHK's Global-Class shipbuilding project.

GHK-Genting's Global-Class ships feature artificial intelligence technologies (including facial and voice recognition for expedited passenger services - boarding, disembarkation, payments), robots (performing mundane tasks), Cineplex (theme park), Asian spa complex, multiple Asian dining venues (including fast-food), both affordable and premium retail shopping facilities, roller coaster, water park (with 5 slides), surf simulator. Staterooms are designed for Asian families and can sleep 2-4 persons. Most cabins are with two (split) bathrooms. Each ship has 8 sets of escalators and 28 elevators. Technologies implemented in the staterooms also include Bluetooth cabin door locks, touch-screen control panel, smartphone-control of different en-suite functions (mood lighting, air-conditioning, etc).

The vessel's waste and water management system was provided by Evac (the world's leading company building integrated waste-wastewater-water management systems). The company's Complete Cleantech Solution package includes a vacuum collection system, wastewater treatment plant, dry and wet waste treatment plant, freshwater desalination plants (based on reverse osmosis). The freshwater generation plants have capacity to produce 3000+ m3 of freshwater per day. The contract with Evac was signed on January 3, 2017.

On January 9, 2017, MV WERFTEN signed a contract with ABB for the delivery of Azipods (power-propulsion units), automation systems and the marine software for all 5 new Genting ships ordered for the brands Crystal and Star. The three Crystal vessels are from the Crystal Endeavor series superyachts (Polar Class 6) - the first purpose-built ships for the contemporary Chinese market regarding onboard amenities and services (food, culture events, shows, enrichment programs, shopping, tours/excursions.

Global Dream is one of the cruise industry's first methanol-powered vessels. Its powerplant is based on Wartsila 32 methanol engines as opposed to the popular dual-fuel engines running on either LNG or conventional marine diesel fuels (LFO-Light Fuel Oil, HFO-Heavy Fuel Oil, or biofuel).

In April 2024, upon the request of DCL, the shipbuilder Meyer Werft (through its subsidiary Meyer Wismar) contracted LTH-Baas AS (1934-founded, Tallinn Estonia -based company) to supply Disney Adventure's passenger cabins, piping systems, electrical cable networks, insulation, and HVAC (Heating-Ventilation-Air conditioning and Refrigeration-Air distribution) systems.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.

I only book a Disney cruise if it's going to the company's private island, Castaway Cay

  • I've taken eight Disney cruises, and I always book a sailing that stops at  Castaway Cay .
  • Castaway Cay is the company's private island and I love its adults-only beach area.
  • You can buy exclusive merch on the island and see Disney characters in special themed costumes.

Insider Today

Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line.

Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call.

Here's why you might want to do the same.

I love that the ship docks right at the island, so there are no tender ships involved

One of the biggest perks of Castaway Cay is that the ship docks right at the island.

Some other cruise line's private islands, like Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, don't have a dock, so cruisers must take tender ships (small boats) from the cruise ship to the island.

I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me.

Getting around the island is easy with the complimentary tram

Castaway Cay is about 1,000 acres — though not all of it's developed — so it can take a while to talk to and from the ship to different spots on the island.

Fortunately, the island has a complimentary tram that I always use to get around the island.

The tram takes cruisers from a station near the ship to two other tram stops for the family beaches, and one tram stop at the adults-only beach .

This makes getting around the island with all of my beach gear easy.

Related stories

Speaking of gear, at Castaway Cay, cruisegoers can borrow free towels as soon as they get off of the ship. There are plenty of towel-return stations around the island, so I also never have to carry wet, sandy towels back on the ship.

I always stop to see the Disney characters in their cute beachwear

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay.

Characters usually meet in the morning from around 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., but exact times can always be found on the Disney Cruise Line app.

The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes. That would never happen in a Disney park.

And if you're a fellow character hunter like me, Mickey and the gang all have Castaway Cay exclusive outfits, which are adorable and make for great family photos.

I always take advantage of every chance to hang out at the adults-only beach

One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. On the island, that spot is Serenity Bay Beach.

This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me.

Plus, just off Serenity Bay Beach is a fun beachside bar serving up drinks and snacks.

There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. My favorite things on the lunch menu are the ribs and macaroni salad .

Before returning to the ship, I send a postcard from the island and check out the special merchandise

I always make a point to stop in at the various shops near the family beach to see the Castaway Cay merchandise. On a recent trip, the shops had everything from spirit jerseys and T-shirts to Christmas ornaments and swimsuits.

And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home.

The postcards I use can be found in the desk drawer of Disney Cruise Line staterooms, and are free to take. If you don't want to send the cute postcards off, you can also keep them as souvenirs.
