A new walking, wheeling and cycling link funded by Places for Everyone  has been officially opened in Inverness. The Raigmore Active Travel Link will allow safe, traffic-free access to the Raigmore Estate, Inverness Campus, and Inverness Shopping Park. The route also joins up with other active travel links in the area to provide connections to Raigmore Hospital, local employers, shops and local communities.

Designed for everyone

The Raigmore Active Travel Link is the first major phase of the landmark £10.6m Inverness City Active Travel Link   to be completed. The next phase of the project involve working with Transport Scotland and Sustrans at Raigmore Interchange. Work is also beginning to look at the potential for active and bus infrastructure to link the Interchange to the city centre along Millburn Road

Consultation and engagement on these future phases will take place during 2022.

Opening the link

The Raigmore Active Travel Link was opened by Elected Members, Raigmore Community Council, and the Primary 5 pupils from Raigmore Primary School. Bet McAllister, Depute Provost of Inverness said: " This is the first large active travel investment in Inverness which Highland Council have delivered in partnership with our project partners and funders Sustrans, through their Places for Everyone fund .

"We celebrate the opening of this link today, but we are looking forward to the significant future investment which is planned as part of the Active Travel Network over the coming years."

A more attractive route

The Raigmore Active Travel Link has been funded through Sustrans’ Places for Everyone programme.

This is part of the Inverness City Active Travel Network, a £10.6m active travel project investing in key walking, wheeling and cycling routes throughout the city.

Maelle Ducreux, Infrastructure Coordinator for Sustrans, said: "The development has provided the opportunity to reinstate native tree species along the embankment which not only make the route more attractive but will provide valuable shielding from the trunk road.

"The new Raigmore Active Travel Link will have an immediate positive impact on people walking, wheeling, and cycling between the Campus, Raigmore Estate and Inverness City Centre.

"These benefits will be felt further when improvements planned for Raigmore Interchange and Millburn Corridor are implemented."

An exemplar project

Munro Ross, Chair of Raigmore Community Council, said: "This has been an exemplar project in terms of community engagement and professional work taking place in our community.

"We look forward to engaging with future projects in the local area, the bar has now been set in terms of engagement and expectations."

First phase complete for £10.6m Inverness City Active Travel Network

Extending from Raigmore Interchange to the Golden Bridge, a new walking, wheeling and cycling link funded by Places for Everyone has been officially opened in Inverness. The Raigmore Active Travel Link , will enable a safe, traffic-free option for those wishing to access Raigmore Estate, Inverness Campus, Inverness Shopping Park.

The accessible route also smartly joins up with other active travel infrastructure in the area to provide connections with Raigmore Hospital, local employers and onwards to retail and residential areas.

Accessibility in design

The Raigmore Active Travel Link is the first major phase of the landmark £10.6m Inverness City Active Travel Network to be completed.

As the first Places for Everyone project to be awarded Category 4 status in the Highlands, this marks a significant moment for the programme.

inverness active travel

The Raigmore Active Travel Link has been designed to provide a low gradient route, reducing the effects of the steep hill leading up to the Raigmore Community, providing a wide walking, wheeling and cycling ramp with rest areas for all users to enjoy. The existing stairs which joined Raigmore Community to the interchange have been upgraded to tie into the new design, to ensure quick direct access.

The next phases of this project involve working with Transport Scotland and Sustrans at Raigmore Interchange.

Additionally, work is beginning to look at the potential for active and bus infrastructure linking the Interchange to the city centre along Millburn Road, utilising active travel and Bus Partnership Funding.

Consultation and engagement on these future phases will take place during 2022.

Opening the Link

The site was officially opened by Elected Members, Raigmore Community Council, and the Primary 5 pupils from Raigmore Primary School nearby, who are Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) for the school . These JSROs are an important part of the primary school as they help raise road safety awareness and promote road safety issues to everyone in the school and the wider community, and the pupils have been very eager to learn about the new infrastructure which has been created in their local area.

The pupils joined Council staff on site last week to learn about the active travel infrastructure and to be part of some filming on the active travel link.

Bet McAllister, Depute Provost of Inverness said:

“This is the first large active travel investment in Inverness which Highland Council have delivered in partnership with our project partners and funders Sustrans, through their Places for Everyone fund.  To have a significant, high quality investment enabling safe, direct routes for walking, wheeling and cycling will help to encourage local people to be more active for everyday journeys, while also reducing our impact on climate change.  We celebrate the opening of this link today, but we are looking forward to the significant future investment which is planned as part of the Active Travel Network over the coming years.” Bet McAllister, Depute Provost of Inverness

The Raigmore Active Travel Link has been funded through Sustrans’ Places for Everyone programme as part of the Inverness City Active Travel Network, a £10.6m active travel project investing in key walking, wheeling and cycling routes throughout the city.

Maelle Ducreux, Infrastructure Coordinator for Sustrans, said:

These benefits will be felt further when improvements planned for Raigmore Interchange and Millburn Corridor are implemented. The development has also provided the opportunity to reinstate native tree species along the embankment which not only make the route more attractive but will provide valuable shielding from the trunk road”. Maelle Ducreux, Sustrans

The Active Travel Link took 40 weeks to complete, and was constructed by Pat Munro, a local contractor who won the tender for this work. Mark Smith, Contracts Manager at Pat Munro, said :

“The Raigmore Active Travel Link has been a great project to be involved in and we’re delighted it is now open to the public. The Raigmore community has been very understanding throughout the construction so we’d like to thank them, once again, for their patience. We hope the local community and others travelling by foot, bike or wheel enjoy using the travel link for many years to come.” Mark Smith, Pat Munro

Munro Ross, Chair of Raigmore Community Council, said:

“This has been an exemplar project in terms of community engagement and professional work taking place in our community. We look forward to engaging with future projects in the local area, the bar has now been set in terms of engagement and expectations.” Munro Ross, Raigmore Community Council

New Inverness Campus active travel route in sight

  • Active Travel , Infrastructure , Local Government
  • 22 . 03 . 2023

Works to deliver a new active travel connection from Cradlehall to Inverness Campus in the Highlands are well underway.

The Scottish Government-funded Low Carbon Travel and Transport Challenge project is currently being built across HIE-owned land at Inverness Campus.

Chair of the Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Ken Gowans is pleased to see work on this active travel route is progressing well. He said: “This route will provide another safe active travel route to support people in the city to make healthier travel choices that will also make a significant contribution to tackling the Climate and Ecological Emergency, compared with driving a car. This route is a great, convenient link in the east of the network that adds another car-free option, so people can choose walking, wheeling and cycling as the easiest way to make their everyday journeys.

“Linking directly into the Campus from Cradlehall Business Park, this route was already used, despite being just a dirt track, that is why it was recognised as an opportunity in the Inverness East Masterplan. Now the Council and its partners are upgrading it, I am sure it will be very well used, especially by people travelling for work and leisure to the Campus, city centre and retail park, as well as people looking to get outdoors and be more active for leisure.”

The route will connect the National Cycle Network in the East of Inverness directly into Inverness Campus, where people walking, wheeling and cycling can enjoy high-quality onward links with the city centre via the Golden Bridge and Raigmore Active Travel Link to Millburn Road, and to the employment, retail and leisure facilities located around Eastfield Way.

The work, which is being carried out by contractor Gow Groundworks, is expected to be completed by the middle of May.

Active travel

On this page.

Active travel to NHS Highland sites - drive less, move more, feel good.

Active travel is a journey with an element of being active: walking and cycling of course, but also using public transport , as this usually includes a walk or cycle too. Lift-sharing is also a great way to reduce car use and make parking easier, and can also give you a chance for a walk.  Please travel on foot, by bike, by public transport or by liftsharing if you can, rather than by car.

In Scotland, half of short journeys of 1 or 2 km are made by car, and two-thirds of all car journeys are made alone. If that's you, could you make a change?  It doesn't have to be all or nothing - could you leave the car behind just one or two days a week?

Why active travel?

Your health, your pocket, your community, your NHS.

Being physically active for everyday journeys:

  • is good for your mental and physical health: exercise prevents and treats many diseases and helps you get better outcomes from medical treatments you receive
  • is good for your pocket : walking and cycling are much cheaper than running a car
  • is good for your community : fewer car movements make our streets cleaner and safer for everyone
  • helps leave NHS car parks free for essential car users: of course, some staff, visitors and patients do need to drive.

So if you can, swap congestion and parking stress for cheaper, greener, healthier options.

Our shared planet - a zero carbon NHS

The climate crisis is also a health crisis and the NHS must reduce its impact on the environment.   NHS Scotland is required to be a zero carbon organisation by 2040.  Carbon emissions from travel haven't dropped in a decade and that has to change.  Reducing car miles for staff, patient and visitor travel now has a crucial part to play in reaching the 2040 target.

Perhaps your next appointment could be carried out online using Near Me or by phone so you don't have to travel. Find out more information about Near Me or ask in your clinic.

What if my journey is too long for active travel?

Active travel doesn’t have to be the whole of your journey. There are lots of ways that part of the total journey could be done more actively, and with a lower environmental impact.

Try parking somewhere further away from your destination to cut vehicle miles and to get a walk, or taking the bike in the car and cycling some of the way. If the bus stop isn't near your house, could walking or cycling there work?

Changing habits always takes extra effort at first, but you'll soon notice the benefits.

Active travel for business journeys

Many of us have to travel for business during the working day. Many of the local journeys we make can be far more pleasant and convenient if we don’t take a car, and cycling for short trips can be just as quick as driving.

Walking by yourself or with colleagues between meetings brings time for a 'reset', preparation or reflection.

Getting started - practical information

The Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS) is the statutory regional transport partnership covering Highland and most of Argyll and Bute (other than Helensburgh and Lomond) Council areas - as well as Eilean Siar (Western Isles), Orkney and Moray.
