ABOUT THE USED

Recently, The Used announced that their newest album Toxic Positivity will be out on May 19 via Big Noise. Toxic Positivity includes the previously-released, no-holds-barred singles “ Fuck You ” and “ People Are Vomit .”

Fans can pre-save Toxic Positivity now at  https://theused.ffm.to/toxicpositivity

Established in 2000, The Used was brought to life and have since released a collection of albums that pioneered the scene of emo rock. High energy live shows, gut wrenching relatable lyrics, and melodies that blended pop sensibility and hard rock was the perfect combination to make an everlasting impression on fans globally.

The Used released their ninth studio album,  Heartwork (Deluxe),  in 2021 via Big Noise. The extended album features 11 never-before-heard tracks that were all written during the original  Heartwork  (2020) sessions. A variety of collaborators including producer John Feldmann, co-writer Mark Hoppus (Blink-182), guest artists Travis Barker, Jason Aalon Butler (Fever 333), Caleb Shomo (Beartooth) and more helped deliver this now 27-track album that simultaneously showcases what made The Used emerge as one of the most prolific bands of the early 2000s as well as what has kept them at the forefront of the genre ever since. The band locked in #4 spots on both the Top Alternative and Top Hard Rock Album charts, #11 on Top Rock Album charts as well as landing in the  Billboard Top 200  at the #87 spot.

The Used is Bert McCracken (Vocals), Jepha (Bass), Dan Whitesides (Drums) and Joey Bradford (Guitar).

ABOUT PIERCE THE VEIL

Pierce the Veil dropped the new album The Jaws of Life, their first in seven years, in February via longtime label Fearless Records.  The Jaws of Life  marked a welcome return for PTV, with press praise pouring in from Rolling Stone, Uproxx, Huffington Post, Gawker, and MTV, among others.

PTV’s evolution from album to album is nothing less than stunning. The early buzz generated by A Flair For The Dramatic (2007) made its follow-up one of the most anticipated albums of 2010. Selfish Machines shot to No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The Chicago Tribune saluted Collide with the Sky for its “post-hardcore punk with more than a few nods to Queen.” They became a true arena act on Misadventures, selling out huge venues without losing the intimate connection with their fans.

The Jaws of Life was produced by Paul Meany (Twenty One Pilots, Yungblud, Lany), and mixed by Adam Hawkins (Machine Gun Kelly, Turnstile, Twenty One Pilots). Deadly serious subject matter abounds, but Pierce The Veil enduringly navigates it all with grace. The lyrics continue the Fuentes tradition of painstaking honesty and clever twists of phrase. Pierce The Veil perform at the biggest festivals and is counted among the biggest and brightest of a younger generation of bands. But it all starts with the songs. The Jaws of Life is filled with the kind to keep the PTV fire burning forever.

THE USED 's new album, "Toxic Positivity" , will be out on May 19 via Big Noise . "Toxic Positivity" includes the previously-released, no-holds-barred singles "Fuck You" and "People Are Vomit" .

Established in 2000, THE USED was brought to life and have since released a collection of albums that pioneered the scene of emo rock. High-energy live shows, gut-wrenching relatable lyrics, and melodies that blended pop sensibility and hard rock was the perfect combination to make an everlasting impression on fans globally.

THE USED released their ninth studio album, "Heartwork (Deluxe)" , in 2021 via Big Noise . The extended album features 11 never-before-heard tracks that were all written during the original "Heartwork" (2020) sessions. A variety of collaborators including producer John Feldmann , co-writer Mark Hoppus ( BLINK-182 ),guest artists Travis Barker , Jason Aalon Butler ( FEVER 333 ), Caleb Shomo ( BEARTOOTH ) and more helped deliver this now 27-track album that simultaneously showcases what made THE USED emerge as one of the most prolific bands of the early 2000s as well as what has kept them at the forefront of the genre ever since. The band locked in No. 4 spots on both the Top Alternative and Top Hard Rock Album charts, No. 11 on Top Rock Album charts as well as landing in the Billboard 200 at the No. 87 spot.

THE USED is Bert McCracken (vocals), Jepha (bass), Dan Whitesides (drums) and Joey Bradford (guitar).

PIERCE THE VEIL dropped the new album "The Jaws Of Life" , their first in seven years, in February via longtime label Fearless Records . "The Jaws Of Life" marked a welcome return for PIERCE THE VEIL , with press praise pouring in from Rolling Stone , Uproxx , Huffington Post , Gawker and MTV , among others.

PIERCE THE VEIL 's evolution from album to album is nothing less than stunning. The early buzz generated by "A Flair For The Dramatic" (2007) made its follow-up one of the most anticipated albums of 2010. "Selfish Machines " shot to No. 1 on Billboard 's Heatseekers chart. The Chicago Tribune saluted "Collide With The Sky" for its "post-hardcore punk with more than a few nods to QUEEN ." They became a true arena act on "Misadventures" , selling out huge venues without losing the intimate connection with their fans.

"The Jaws Of Life" was produced by Paul Meany ( TWENTY ONE PILOTS , YUNGBLUD , LANY ),and mixed by Adam Hawkins ( MACHINE GUN KELLY , TURNSTILE , TWENTY ONE PILOTS ). Deadly serious subject matter abounds, but PIERCE THE VEIL enduringly navigates it all with grace. The lyrics continue the Vic Fuentes tradition of painstaking honesty and clever twists of phrase. PIERCE THE VEIL perform at the biggest festivals and is counted among the biggest and brightest of a younger generation of bands. But it all starts with the songs. "The Jaws Of Life" is filled with the kind to keep the PIERCE THE VEIL fire burning forever.

The Used announces fall 2023 headlining tour

Sleeping With Sirens and Dead American will be special guests

The Used has announced a cross-country headlining fall 2023 tour with special guests Sleeping With Sirens and Dead American. The tour will be making 24 stops throughout the United States, kicking off on September 5th in Birmingham and making stops in Boston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Denver, and more before wrapping up in Paso Robles on October 11th.

Tickets go on sale on June 30th at 10 am local time.

The Used’s recently released their newest album, Toxic Positivity . Described as a “day-in-the-life journey of a depressed, anxiety-ridden person” by vocalist Bert McCracken, the tell-all record shares the highs and lows of depression and addiction through a cohesive body of work, speaking to the ever-changing headspace that he was experiencing at the time of writing. “This record is quite tough for me to listen to,” he adds, “because it’s a reflection of times in my life that have been some of my lowest ever.”

For as long as he can remember, McCracken has used music as an outlet to lay bare his innermost thoughts and emotions. For 23 years, that writing has enabled The Used to deeply resonate with fans the world over. Exploding off the back of universally adored rock anthems such as “The Taste Of Ink,” “Take It Away” and “Pretty Handsome Awkward,” the many millions of streams and record sales (including the Platinum-certified The Used and In Love And Death ) their career has yielded are one thing; the human connection formed between artist and audience is priceless, however. To that end alone, The Used can consider themselves four of the luckiest and richest men in music.

Toxic Positivity speaks of the strength of the band’s collective collaboration and also their innate, unquenchable thirst to create. “I think we have no choice but to write and write and write,” says McCracken. “It has always just been in us, and we’ve had to get it out. I read a quote once that said you either work your entire lifetime on four great pieces, or you write thousands of pieces and become great that way. Everything that we feel, I think it always makes for a good song.”

In that regard, McCracken is humble to a fault, for the simple fact that the songs within Toxic Positivity are far more than merely good songs. They mark the latest chapter in a truly great career. And, like those that have come before them, they will truly matter.

About The Used

The Used is an American rock band from Orem, Utah. Formed in 2001, the group signed to Reprise Records the same year and rose to fame in June 2002 after releasing their self-titled debut album. They followed up with their second album, In Love and Death, in September 2004 and their third album, Lies for the Liars, in May 2007. Shallow Believer, an EP that featured most of the band's B-sides, was released in February 2008. They spent 2008 working on their fourth studio album, Artwork, which was released on August 31, 2009. A fifth album, titled Vulnerable, was released in March 2012 through the independent label Hopeless Records. Albums by The Used have achieved gold and platinum statuses in more than six countries worldwide. By 2008, they had sold over 3 million records worldwide.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2024 Chevron Championship

N elly Korda did it again. The 25-year-old American captured the Chevron Championship to collect a fifth-straight victory Sunday at Carlton Woods, trying Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez as the only other players in LPGA history to accomplish the feat. It's also Korda's second major win, following the 2021 Women's PGA Championship.

Korda opened with 68 then shot three consecutibe 69s to finish at 13-under-par total to earn the $1.2 million first-place check from the $7.9 million purse. Maja Start was second place, two shots back. She earned $666,834.

RELATED: Here are the clubs Nelly Korda used to win the Chevron Championship

There’s been a broken record being played at LPGA majors of late, but one that’s creating beautiful music to those competing in the events. As tour executives emphasize the goal of increasing the prize money payouts for each event, they’re making good on the promise. In 2023, all five of the tour’s biggest individual events paid out record amounts, including a $12 million payout from the USGA at the U.S. Women’s Open and a $10 million purse from the PGA of America at the KPMG Women’s PGA.

Will the trend continue in 2024—particularly with the public awakening going regarding women’s sports overall ? If the Chevron Championship is any indication, it likely will. Earlier in the week, tournament organizers in conjunction with LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan, announced that the overall prize money payout for the event would be $7.9 million , a jump from $5.2 million in 2023.

In the three years since Chevron became the sponsor, purses for the tournament, previously held in the Palm Springs area and best known as the Dinah Shore, have risen $4.8 million. And the tour and Chevron announced that the title sponsorship has been extended until 2029.

At the Chevron this week, even those who didn't make the cut received $10,000 for their participation, up from $5,000 last year.

Here are the prize money payouts for every golfer who made the cut in Texas.

True crime podcasts are popular in the U.S., particularly among women and those with less formal education

True crime stands out as the most common topic of top-ranked podcasts in the United States, according to a new Pew Research Center study . So who, exactly, listens to true crime podcasts?

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to explore U.S. adults’ views of and experiences with podcasts as a part of the news and information landscape.

To examine the ways Americans get news and information in a digital age, the Center surveyed 5,132 U.S. adults from Dec. 5 to 11, 2022. Everyone who completed the survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the  ATP’s methodology .

In the questionnaire, U.S. adults who said they are currently listening to at least one podcast were asked in an open-ended question to write in the name of the podcast that they listen to most. If respondents answered with the names of more than one podcast, only the first one was coded. In total, 1,563 open-end responses were coded.

Here are  the questions used  in the survey, along with responses, and  its methodology .

As part of the study, the Center also took a close look at key characteristics of top-ranked podcasts. Researchers identified these top podcasts by analyzing daily lists of the top 200 podcasts on Apple Podcasts and Spotify from April 1 to Sept. 30, 2022. The average chart position of each podcast that appeared on either list was calculated, and the top 300 podcasts from each site were included as top podcasts. Researchers identified 451 top podcasts by combining these lists so that podcasts that were among the top 300 on both sites were not counted twice.

A team of trained researchers then analyzed these 451 podcasts to determine podcast affiliation, topic, format and other key characteristics of each podcast. Additional data on episode length and frequency was analyzed after collecting data on all episodes published in 2022 through the Spotify and Apple Podcasts application programming interface.

Here are the detailed tables for this analysis of 451 top-ranked podcasts, and the methodology .

A bar chart that shows demographic profile and party identification of true crime podcast listeners.

Overall, 34% of U.S. adults who have listened to a podcast in the past year say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime, according to a 2022 Center survey . But some demographic groups are more likely than others to do so:

  • Among U.S. podcast listeners, women are almost twice as likely as men to regularly listen to true crime podcasts (44% vs. 23%).
  • Podcast listeners with less formal education are more likely than those with higher levels of education to listen to shows about true crime. Looking at podcast listeners who have a high school diploma or less, 45% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. A third of podcast listeners with some college education say the same, as do 27% of those who have at least a bachelor’s degree. This pattern persists even when accounting for age.
  • While women are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts overall, women with lower levels of formal education are the most likely to do so. A majority (57%) of women with a high school diploma or less say they regularly listen to true crime podcasts, compared with 34% of men with the same education level and 36% of women with a college degree.
  • Younger podcast listeners are more likely than the oldest listeners to report tuning in to shows about true crime. Among U.S. podcast listeners ages 18 to 29, 41% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. This compares with 15% of listeners ages 65 and older.

A bar chart showing that across education levels, women are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts than men.

The Center’s new study finds that true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts – defined as those with the highest average daily rankings on Apple’s and Spotify’s lists of top podcasts in a six-month period in 2022. Almost a quarter (24%) of these top podcasts are primarily about true crime.

True crime podcasts are often investigations into murders, scandals and other criminal events. Serial, which helped to popularize the genre , is a series that provides in-depth investigations into particular crimes or events. Due to its popularity, Serial is often credited for drawing national attention to the conviction of Adnan Syed.

Other top-ranked podcasts in this genre include 20/20, Crime Junkie, Dateline NBC, and My Favorite Murder. Crime Junkie and Dateline NBC are among the most popular podcasts cited by podcast listeners who gave a name for the show they tune in to most – 1% named each of these podcasts.

While true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts, it is not the most popular topic Americans report listening to, according to the Center’s recent survey . About a third of podcast listeners in the United States (34%) say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime.

Other topics – such as comedy (47%) and entertainment, pop culture and the arts (46%) – are more popular than true crime.

While the Center’s survey did not specifically ask why podcast listeners turn to specific topics such as true crime, we can look at the reasons that people said they listen to podcasts in general – and among those who said the podcast they listen to most is true crime.

Of those who said their main podcast is about true crime, the most common major reasons for listening were for entertainment (85%) and to have something to listen to while doing something else (84%). They were less likely to cite reasons like learning, hearing other people’s opinions, or staying up to date about current events.

2023 Toyota Crown: Average Used Pricing And What You Get For The Money

The 2023 Toyota Crown is a great used luxury sedan, here it is what you get for your money.

Looking to buy a used car in 2024 can mean a lot of information to process. If you are looking to buy a used luxury car in 2024, there can be even more to look at, including price, what luxury features your new car will have, the fuel consumption, if the car makes the statement you want it to make, and if you will enjoy driving it.

With so many automakers in the auto industry, like BMW, Bentley, Audi, Rolls-Royce, Genesis, and Tesla, producing luxury cars, prices range from the reasonable to the eye-watering. It is fortunate then, that automakers such as Toyota also produce some luxurious cars that have a reasonable used price. Cars like the 2023 Toyota Crown.

Due to the high costs elsewhere in everyone's life at the moment, paying the best price for a used car, either from a private seller, or from a local car dealership, is likely to be a top priority. You will also want to find out what the yearly running costs are, reliability ratings, and how gas-savvy your new car is. We have gathered information from a range of sources to bring you the average used price of the 2023 Toyota Crown, what you get for your money, its reliability ratings, and how much it will cost you in gas each year to own one.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Toyota, and other authoritative sources, including the EPA, Statista, Repair Pal, HotCars, and NHTSA.

2023 Toyota Crown: Performance, Price, And Photos

2023 toyota crown average used price: $43,802.

With an average used price of just over $40,000, the 2023 Toyota Crown is by no means the cheapest used car of 2024, but it is a lot more luxurious, more powerful, and fuel-efficient, compared to the likes of the 2023 Chevrolet Malibu , which has an average used price of $25,986.

It is worth noting that the average used price for a 2023 Toyota Crown is $43,802, but that price does include all three available trims, with the cheapest trim available to buy at $39,950.

2023 Toyota Crown Trim Levels

There are three available trims for the 2023 Toyota Crown. They are called the Toyota Crown XLE (base trim), Toyota Crown Limited (mid-trim), and the Toyota Crown Platinum (top trim). All three trims come equipped with a frugal hybrid engine, a lot of impressive tech features (we'll cover this later though), different luxury features, and a cutting-edge exterior design.

The three 2023 Toyota Crown trims are available from Toyota at the following prices:

  • 2023 Toyota Crown XLE: $39,950
  • 2023 Toyota Crown Limited: $45,550
  • 2023 Toyota Crown Platinum: $52,350

2023 Toyota Crown Specifications

According to Statista, the top priority for Americans when buying a new car is how fuel-efficient it is . Though we will cover the fuel economy statistics for the 2023 Toyota Crown further down, each trim of the 2023 Toyota Crown showcases a mild-hybrid powertrain that can achieve respectable combined MPG stats.

Both the XLE and Limited trim showcase the dual-injected engine, whilst the Platinum trim boasts the more powerful turbocharged engine.

(Data was collected from Toyota)

All trims also feature heated power mirrors, an acoustic noise-reducing windshield, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights, and high-solar absorbing glass all around.

If you were to buy the Toyota Crown Limited trim, you could also benefit from luxurious exterior features such as rain-sensing intermittent wipers, quad-LED projector low and high-beam headlights, and a panoramic fixed-glass roof with a power sunshade.

The most luxurious trim available, the 2023 Crown Platinum, features, as standard, rain-sensing wipers and 21-inch 10-spoke machined alloys, and you can opt for bi-tone exterior coloring to really turn heads in this sedan, which acts as a cheaper luxury alternative to the BMW 5 Series .

The Real Reason Toyota Isn’t Fully Committed To Electric Cars Yet

A plush and economical drive from the crown.

One of the biggest selling points for a used 2023 Toyota Crown is the frugal, yet powerful, engine, that sits beneath the hoods of all three trims. As mentioned, there are two powertrain options available, both of which produce a decent amount of power, and both are good for saving gas money compared to other modern cars.

A Frugal Hybrid Powertrain Is Featured

Both powertrain options for the 2023 Toyota Crown are mild hybrids. The differences between the two engine options are the power output, the estimated combined MPG, and the motor featured.

The dual-injected powertrain that is featured on the Crown XLE and Limited trims is assisted by two motors; One 40KW motor that produces 54 horsepower and 89 LB-FT of torque at the rear, and the other at the front, which is an 88KW motor and produces 118 horsepower and 149 LB-FT of torque.

The turbocharged engine which is featured on the Toyota Crown Platinum Trim boasts a rear 58.6KW motor that produces 79 horsepower and 124 LB-FT of torque, and a 61KW front motor that produces 81 horsepower and 215 LB-FT of torque.

10 Reasons Why The Toyota Crown Is Special

Combined mpg rating: 41 mpg.

Though it is not as economical as the most fuel-efficient AWD hybrid car of 2024 , the 2023 Toyota Crown is still very frugal compared to others on the market and can give you the opportunity to save money on monthly gas bills.

According to Fuel Economy.com, the 2023 Toyota Crown XLE and Limited trims can achieve a combined MPG rating of 41 MPG . The 2023 Toyota Crown Platinum trim can achieve a combined MPG rating of 30 MPG. Fueleconomy.gov has estimated that driving the XLE or Limited trim can save you $3,000 on gas over 5 years of ownership compared to other modern cars, whilst they have estimated that driving the Platinum, though not as frugal, will still save you $750 in gas over the same period.

Repair Pal ranks Toyota as 4 out of 5 stars for reliability , but, unfortunately, they do not have any information about the 2023 Toyota Crown yet. Toyota, as a brand, though, has a sterling reputation for bullet-proof and ultra-reliable vehicles . So, if you are looking at buying a used car in 2024, you want a bit of luxury, some great gas-savvy potential, impressive performance specs, presumed reliability, extensive safety features, and a reasonable used price, the 2023 Toyota Crown may be worth looking at.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

The outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through the nation’s poultry farms is the worst in US history. But scientists say it’s now starting to spread into places and species it’s never been before.

Today, my colleague, Emily Anthes, explains.

It’s Monday, April 22.

Emily, welcome back to the show.

Thanks for having me. Happy to be here.

So, Emily, we’ve been talking here on “The Daily” about prices of things and how they’ve gotten so high, mostly in the context of inflation episodes. And one of the items that keeps coming up is eggs. Egg prices were through the roof last year, and we learned it was related to this. Avian flu has been surging in the United States. You’ve been covering this. Tell us what’s happening.

Yes, so I have been covering this virus for the last few years. And the bird flu is absolutely tearing through poultry flocks, and that is affecting egg prices. That’s a concern for everyone, for me and for my family. But when it comes to scientists, egg prices are pretty low on their list of concerns. Because they see this bird flu virus behaving differently than previous versions have. And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before.

OK, so bird flu, though, isn’t new. I mean I remember hearing about cases in Asia in the ‘90s. Remind us how it began.

Bird flu refers to a bunch of different viruses that are adapted to spread best in birds. Wild water birds, in particular, are known for carrying these viruses. And flu viruses are famous for also being shapeshifters. So they’re constantly swapping genes around and evolving into new strains. And as you mentioned back in the ‘90s, a new version of bird flu, a virus known as H5N1, emerged in Asia. And it has been spreading on and off around the world since then, causing periodic outbreaks.

And how are these outbreaks caused?

So wild birds are the reservoir for the virus, which means they carry it in their bodies with them around the world as they fly and travel and migrate. And most of the time, these wild birds, like ducks and geese, don’t even get very sick from this virus. But they shed it. So as they’re traveling over a poultry farm maybe, if they happen to go to the bathroom in a pond that the chickens on the farm are using or eat some of the feed that chickens on the farm are eating, they can leave the virus behind.

And the virus can get into chickens. In some cases, it causes mild illness. It’s what’s known as low pathogenic avian influenza. But sometimes the virus mutates and evolves, and it can become extremely contagious and extremely fatal in poultry.

OK, so the virus comes through wild birds, but gets into farms like this, as you’re describing. How have farms traditionally handled outbreaks, when they do happen?

Well, because this threat isn’t new, there is a pretty well-established playbook for containing outbreaks. It’s sometimes known as stamping out. And brutally, what it means is killing the birds. So the virus is so deadly in this highly pathogenic form that it’s sort of destined to kill all the birds on a farm anyway once it gets in. So the response has traditionally been to proactively depopulate or cull all the birds, so it doesn’t have a chance to spread.

So that’s pretty costly for farmers.

It is. Although the US has a program where it will reimburse farmers for their losses. And the way these reimbursements work is they will reimburse farmers only for the birds that are proactively culled, and not for those who die naturally from the virus. And the thinking behind that is it’s a way to incentivize farmers to report outbreaks early.

So, OK, lots of chickens are killed in a way to manage these outbreaks. So we know how to deal with them. But what about now? Tell me about this new strain.

So this new version of the virus, it emerged in 2020.

After the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus, authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of influenza, a kind of bird flu.

And pretty quickly it became clear that a couple things set it apart.

A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu.

This virus, for whatever reason, seemed very good at infecting all sorts of wild birds that we don’t normally associate with bird flu.

[BIRD CRYING]

He was kind of stepping, and then falling over, and using its wing to right itself.

Things like eagles and condors and pelicans.

We just lost a parliament of owls in Minneapolis.

Yeah, a couple of high profile nests.

And also in the past, wild birds have not traditionally gotten very sick from this virus. And this version of the virus not only spread widely through the wild bird population, but it proved to be devastating.

The washing up along the East Coast of the country from Scotland down to Suffolk.

We were hearing about mass die-offs of seabirds in Europe by the hundreds and the thousands.

And the bodies of the dead dot the island wherever you look.

Wow. OK. So then as we know, this strain, like previous ones, makes its way from wild animals to farmed animals, namely to chickens. But it’s even more deadly.

Absolutely. And in fact, it has already caused the worst bird flu outbreak in US history. So more than 90 million birds in the US have died as a result of this virus.

90 million birds.

Yes, and I should be clear that represents two things. So some of those birds are birds who naturally got infected and died from the virus. But the vast majority of them are birds that were proactively culled. What it adds up to is, is 90 million farmed birds in the US have died since this virus emerged. And it’s not just a chicken problem. Another thing that has been weird about this virus is it has jumped into other kinds of farms. It is the first time we’ve seen a bird flu virus jump into US livestock.

And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented.

So it’s showing up at Dairy farms now. You’re saying that bird flu has now spread to cows. How did that happen?

So we don’t know exactly how cows were first infected, but most scientists’ best guess is that maybe an infected wild bird that was migrating shed the virus into some cattle feed or a pasture or a pond, and cattle picked it up. The good news is they don’t seem to get nearly as sick as chickens do. They are generally making full recoveries on their own in a couple of weeks.

OK, so no mass culling of cows?

No, that doesn’t seem to be necessary at this point. But the bad news is that it’s starting to look like we’re seeing this virus spread from cow to cow. We don’t know exactly how that’s happening yet. But anytime you see cow-to-cow or mammal-to-mammal transmission, that’s a big concern.

And why is that exactly?

Well, there are a bunch of reasons. First, it could allow the outbreak to get much bigger, much faster, which might increase the risk to the food supply. And we might also expect it to increase the risk to farm workers, people who might be in contact with these sick cows.

Right now, the likelihood that a farmer who gets this virus passes it on is pretty low. But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned.

And then if we think more expansively beyond what’s happening on farms, there’s another big danger lurking out there. And that’s what happens when this virus gets into wild animals, vast populations that we can’t control.

We’ll be right back.

So, Emily, you said that another threat was the threat of flu in wild animal populations. Clearly, of course, it’s already in wild birds. Where else has it gone?

Well, the reason it’s become such a threat is because of how widespread it’s become in wild birds. So they keep reintroducing it to wild animal populations pretty much anywhere they go. So we’ve seen the virus repeatedly pop up in all sorts of animals that you might figure would eat a wild bird, so foxes, bobcats, bears. We actually saw it in a polar bear, raccoons. So a lot of carnivores and scavengers.

The thinking is that these animals might stumble across a sick or dead bird, eat it, and contract the virus that way. But we’re also seeing it show up in some more surprising places, too. We’ve seen the virus in a bottle-nosed dolphin, of all places.

And most devastatingly, we’ve seen enormous outbreaks in other sorts of marine mammals, especially sea lions and seals.

So elephant seals, in particular in South America, were just devastated by this virus last fall. My colleague Apoorva Mandavilli and I were talking to some scientists in South America who described to us what they called a scene from hell, of walking out onto a beach in Argentina that is normally crowded with chaotic, living, breathing, breeding, elephant seals — and the beach just being covered by carcass, after carcass, after carcass.

Mostly carcasses of young newborn pups. The virus seemed to have a mortality rate of 95 percent in these elephant seal pups, and they estimated that it might have killed more than 17,000 of the pups that were born last year. So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before.

And why is it so far reaching, Emily? I mean, what explains these mass die-offs?

There are probably a few explanations. One is just how much virus is out there in the environment being shed by wild birds into water and onto beaches. These are also places that viruses like this haven’t been before. So it’s reaching elephant seals and sea lions in South America that have no prior immunity.

There’s also the fact that these particular species, these sea lions and seals, tend to breed in these huge colonies all crowded together on beaches. And so what that means is if a virus makes its way into the colony, it’s very conducive conditions for it to spread. And scientists think that that’s actually what’s happening now. That it’s not just that all these seals are picking up the virus from individual birds, but that they’re actually passing it to each other.

So basically, this virus is spreading to places it’s never been before, kind of virgin snow territory, where animals just don’t have the immunity against it. And once it gets into a population packed on a beach, say, of elephant seals, it’s just like a knife through butter.

Absolutely. And an even more extreme example of that is what we’re starting to see happen in Antarctica, where there’s never been a bird flu outbreak before until last fall, for the first time, this virus reached the Antarctic mainland. And we are now seeing the virus move through colonies of not only seabirds and seals, but penguin colonies, which have not been exposed to these viruses before.

And it’s too soon to say what the toll will be. But penguins also, of course, are known for breeding in these large colonies.

Probably. don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins.

Emily, at this point, I’m kind of wondering why more people aren’t talking about this. I mean, I didn’t know any of this before having this conversation with you, and it feels pretty worrying.

Well, a lot of experts and scientists are talking about this with rising alarm and in terms that are quite stark. They’re talking about the virus spreading through wild animal populations so quickly and so ferociously that they’re calling it an ecological disaster.

But that’s a disaster that sometimes seems distant from us, both geographically, we’re talking about things that are happening maybe at the tip of Argentina or in Antarctica. And also from our concerns of our everyday lives, what’s happening in Penguins might not seem like it has a lot to do with the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store. But I think that we should be paying a lot of attention to how this virus is moving through animal populations, how quickly it’s moving through animal populations, and the opportunities that it is giving the virus to evolve into something that poses a much bigger threat to human health.

So the way it’s spreading in wild animals, even in remote places like Antarctica, that’s important to watch, at least in part because there’s a real danger to people here.

So we know that the virus can infect humans, and that generally it’s not very good at spreading between humans. But the concern all along has been that if this virus has more opportunities to spread between mammals, it will get better at spreading between them. And that seems to be what is happening in seals and sea lions. Scientists are already seeing evidence that the virus is adapting as it passes from marine mammal to marine mammal. And that could turn it into a virus that’s also better at spreading between people.

And if somebody walks out onto a beach and touches a dead sea lion, if their dog starts playing with a sea lion carcass, you could imagine that this virus could make its way out of marine mammals and into the human population. And if it’s this mammalian adapted version of the virus that makes its way out, that could be a bigger threat to human health.

So the sheer number of hosts that this disease has, the more opportunity it has to mutate, and the more chance it has to mutate in a way that would actually be dangerous for people.

Yes, and in particular, the more mammalian hosts. So that gives the virus many more opportunities to become a specialist in mammals instead of a specialist in birds, which is what it is right now.

Right. I like that, a specialist in mammals. So what can we do to contain this virus?

Well, scientists are exploring new options. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether we should start vaccinating chickens in the US. The government, USDA labs, have been testing some poultry vaccines. It’s probably scientifically feasible. There are challenges there, both in terms of logistics — just how would you go about vaccinating billions of chickens every year. There are also trade questions. Traditionally, a lot of countries have not been willing to accept poultry products from countries that vaccinate their poultry.

And there’s concern about whether the virus might spread undetected in flocks that are vaccinated. So as we saw with COVID, the vaccine can sometimes stop you from getting sick, but it doesn’t necessarily stop infection. And so countries are worried they might unknowingly import products that are harboring the virus.

And what about among wild animals? I mean, how do you even begin to get your head around that?

Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals. We can try to protect some vulnerable populations, but we’re not going to stop the circulation of this virus.

So, Emily, we started this conversation with a kind of curiosity that “The Daily” had about the price of eggs. And then you explained the bird flu to us. And then somehow we ended up learning about an ecological disaster that’s unfolding all around us, and potentially the source of the next human pandemic. That is pretty scary.

It is scary, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. And I feel like I should take a step back and say none of this is inevitable. None of this is necessarily happening tomorrow. But this is why scientists are concerned and why they think it’s really important to keep a very close eye on what’s happening both on farms and off farms, as this virus spreads through all sorts of animal populations.

One thing that comes up again and again and again in my interviews with people who have been studying bird flu for decades, is how this virus never stops surprising them. And sometimes those are bad surprises, like these elephant seal die-offs, the incursions into dairy cattle. But there are some encouraging signs that have emerged recently. We’re starting to see some early evidence that some of the bird populations that survived early brushes with this virus might be developing some immunity. So that’s something that maybe could help slow the spread of this virus in animal populations.

We just don’t entirely know how this is going to play out. Flu is a very difficult, wily foe. And so that’s one reason scientists are trying to keep such a close, attentive eye on what’s happening.

Emily, thank you.

Thanks for having me.

Here’s what else you should know today.

On this vote, the yeas are 366 and the nays are 58. The bill is passed.

On Saturday, in four back-to-back votes, the House voted resoundingly to approve a long-stalled package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and other American allies, delivering a major victory to President Biden, who made aid to Ukraine one of his top priorities.

On this vote, the yeas are 385, and the no’s are 34 with one answering present. The bill is passed without objection.

The House passed the component parts of the $95 billion package, which included a bill that could result in a nationwide ban of TikTok.

On this vote, the yeas are 311 and the nays are 112. The bill is passed.

Oh, one voting present. I missed it, but thank you.

In a remarkable breach of custom, Democrats stepped in to supply the crucial votes to push the legislation past hard-line Republican opposition and bring it to the floor.

The House will be in order.

The Senate is expected to pass the legislation as early as Tuesday.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
