A climb to the top of Kilimanjaro is mostly non-technical, and falls under the trekking category, while an expedition to Mt. Everest is squarely in the more challenging mountaineering realm. Altitude can often play a bigger role in this type of adventure too, which can literally take place on every continent.

Take caution however; you should only embark on a mountaineering trip if you have the necessary skills and experience to do so and are traveling with a certified mountain guide.

You may also be involved in an activity that requires significant effort or involves some degree of risk, real or perceived.

Adventure travel does not discriminate. 

Anyone can be an adventurous traveller, whether you’re young, old, a nature nut or an adrenaline junkie seeking your next rush. 

There’s always plenty of activities you can do all around the world that come under the umbrella of Adventure Travel.

There are some “softer” forms of adventure travel (Eg. activities seen as having less risk and intensity), whereas others are more extreme requiring you to step outside of your comfort zone or take on an element of risk.  

Now that I’ve explained what Adventure Travel is, let’s now look at some of the best places adventure travel destinations to tick off your bucket list! 

6 Adventure Travel Destinations to Add to Your Bucket List!

Throughout my travels, I have found that you find adventure in almost any foreign place. 

However, like anything, there are always those that stand out – with better infrastructure, landscapes and/or communities to support adventure-packed experiences.

Here are the top 6 adventure travel destinations that I believe are superior to get you that adrenaline rush you seek or actively exploring amongst nature.

1)  Adventure Travel in Africa

Throughout my travels, Africa was definitely one of those stand out places. It has an aura about it that you just can’t get anywhere else.

The feeling that anything could happen or that you’ll experience something that’s never happened before. 

As they often say, “ TIA. THIS IS AFRICA.”

For my fellow thrill-seeking souls, Africa has everything you could possibly want when it comes to adventure travel. 

From jumping off the world’s highest bridge bungee, 4X4 driving over sand dunes, cage shark diving, or even doing a safari drive to catch a glimpse of the Big 5, in Africa you can do it all. 

Here’s some of the many adventure travel activities you can do in Africa:

• Venture to Kruger National Park for a Safari/Game Drive and spot the Big 5 (South Africa)

Yes this is my home country, so I may be a touch biased. BUT, there is honestly so much adventure and fun to be had on this massive island. 

Australia boasts some of the world’s oldest rainforests, reefs and deserts which are a true wonder to explore.

In addition to adventure sports, Australia also contains a rich history. Aboriginal people are believed to be the oldest living descendants of the first people to leave Africa up to 75,000 years ago.

A genetic study even revealed that the aboriginal people may have the oldest continuous culture on the planet.

One limitation you may have in Australia, is the availability of bungy jumping. Right now, this adrenaline-packed adventure sport is only offered in Cairns. 

If bungy jumping is a non-negotiable for you, then I’d suggest you do a hop, skip and jump over to New Zealand. This is where bungee jumping is abundantly available.

3. Adventurous Travel in New Zealand

Located right next to Australia sits one of the best adventure capitals of them all, New Zealand.

New Zealand is renowned for adventure tourism and boasts some of the world’s most stunning scenery. 

You’re sure to find an activity that will not only scare the pants off you but will also leave you grinning from ear to ear.

5. Travelling in South America

Now it’s time to talk about South America.

South America is actually my next bucket list destination. I CANNOT wait to travel there next year (assuming all quietens down with COVID).

What an epic place for an adventure. 

If adventure travel is your jam, and you haven’t considered South America as a destination on your bucket list, then my friend, you’re in for a treat.

I believe that South America is one of the best adventure travel destinations in the world.

Whilst travelling across the continent, you can:

• Hike the famous Inca trail through the Andes mountains, and witness the abandoned city of Machu Picchu 
• Stay overnight and cleanse amongst nature in the Amazon jungle 
• Sail to the Galapagos islands (Ecuador) to witness a diverse range of plant and animal species that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. 
• 4WD through the white wilderness of the salt flats in Bolivia  
• Go paragliding over the city of Lima, the capital of Peru
• Trek to the ends of the earth to see the polar glaciers of Argentina and Chile

In addition to adventure activities, South America is extremely rich in culture.  

There are many ways to inject yourself into the local community to experience the country through their eyes. 

Whether it be visiting a woman’s co-op, volunteering within the community, doing a street Latin dance class or even attending a local school to learn Spanish. 

Whatever you choose to do, I am sure that you won’t return home disappointed after visiting South America. 

6. Adventure Travel in Europe & the UK

If you’re into history, Europe is the place to go. 

Especially if you’re after an action packed experience, but want to avoid culture shock. Assuming you’re from a Western country…

When you go travelling through Europe and the UK, you will be able to access a plethora of adventure sports and experiences. 

One of the greatest benefits of Europe and the UK, is that everything is so close together.

Moving between cities, and even countries for that fact, is super easy compared to some of the other main continents. Getting around as a tourist is never a problem (in the main touristy countries anyway).

If you’re seeking an adventure in Europe or the UK, here are some things you can do:

• Give surfing a go at “The Wave” in Bristol. It is an inland surf destination where you can surf on consistent, safe waves all year round. 
• Hire a kayak and witness the stunning scenery along the Scottish coast and highlands. 
• Grab a paddle and speed down the crazy white water rapids of the River Tryweryn ( Snowdonia National Park ) in Wales
• Go bungee jumping at Bray Lake or Tatton Park in Cheshire, England
• Paraglide like a bird over the Austrian Tyrol 
• Get in touch with your inner bike rider in Amsterdam, Netherlands
• Go kite surfing or horse riding in Spain 
• Venture across the border into Portugal to get your adrenaline rushing with some downhill mountain bike riding 
• Show your skiing moves at Mont Blanc in France

Paragliding Over Italy's Apennine Mountains

The village of Castelluccio, in Italy's Umbria region, sits about three hours from Rome. Perched high on a grassy hill, it's known for providing stunning views over the Piano Grande, a valley that comes to life with thousands of tiny red, white, and purple flowers every spring (there's even a festival that celebrates the superbloom every summer). It's the perfect place to soak up fresh mountain air while indulging in the region's notable pecorino cheese.

It's also a paraglider's dream. At 8,123 feet in the air, Monte Vettore is the typical jumping-off point for a 20-minute tandem glide with Fly the Appenines . (If you're hungry for more air time, you can also sign up for longer 90-minute cross-country flights.) Piano Grande's year-round mild weather makes it ideal for this activity, so even if you show up after the flowers have faded, you'll still be in for a treat. Once you're back on the ground, there's still the rest of Umbria to explore by foot, car, or even on horseback .

Heli-skiing in the Alps

It's no secret that the Alps are home to world-class skiing. But for those who want exclusive access to untouched powder and secluded wilderness, there's nothing like a heli-skiing trip to make you feel like the mountains are your own private playground. At the northern edge of Piedmont, Val Formazza offers all the isolation you'll need.

The protected valley is surrounded by three majestic peaks: Ofenhorn, Blinnenhorn, and Basòdino. And because it's so high up (the highest landing spot available is around 10,500 feet), snow falls by the feet every year. To access all that unspoiled backcountry, Heli-Guides maintains a fleet of Airbus AS 350 helicopters, and the menu of options — from easy day trips to full-week packages — means travelers can spend as much (or as little) time in the valley as they like.

Of course, some prior skiing experience is needed, but you don't have to be a pro. Guides choose from a wide range of landing spots, meaning they can customize the trip to match your exact level of ability. And one thing's for sure: wherever you choose to land, the views aren't likely to disappoint.

Diving With Great Whites in South Australia

Off the coast of Port Lincoln in South Australia, the Neptune Islands are home to Australia's largest colony of long-nose fur seals. And while those cuties are worth a visit themselves, what interests thrill-seekers are their top predator: the great white shark.

Little is known about the migration habits of great white sharks, which is what makes this site so exciting for adventure travelers. Thanks to a mingling of cold and warm currents merging from the Indian and Southern Oceans, the islands offer an incredible diversity of wildlife, hence the appeal for bloodthirsty sharks.

Humans aren't on the menu, of course. Companies like Calypso Star Charters keep you safe inside a steel cage or what's known as an "aqua sub" (essentially a reverse aquarium, where the fish are outside the glass). You'll be free to marvel at these 19-foot-long beasts as they swim within arm's reach.

Hiking From Hut to Hut in the Colorado Backcountry

Little-known fact: Colorado is home to more huts and yurts than any other state in the U.S. And that's not by accident. Back in the '80s, members of the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army decided to recreate the huts they'd encountered while on duty in the Alps. And so the 10th Mountain Division Hut System was born.

Today, the network of 38 huts spread across a 350-mile route gives travelers a chance to connect with the Colorado wilderness. Just don't come expecting turn-down service. The huts are rustic — you'll have snowmelt for water, a bare bed, and basic cooking utensils, and that's about it. But for all the austerity, the huts have a zen-like appeal (and they're very affordable). Some are close to popular trails, while others are miles (and we do mean miles ) from civilization.

Best of all, you can go any season. Just be prepared to sweat. In winter, it could be six or seven miles of cross-country skiing to get from one hut to the next. (Intermediate skiing skills are required.) And in the summer, it's the same distance for hiking and mountain biking — just without the snow. However you do it, make sure at least one person in your group has wilderness experience, not to mention avalanche safety training for winter visits. As the website states: "Route finding may be the most important skill you'll need."

Hiking Around Red-hot Lava in Hawaii

Each day, hundreds of people show up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to witness the plumes of gas and steam; by night, the phenomenon is even more spectacular, as you'll see red-orange lava glowing from inside the rim of the caldera. The sight is enough to make you realize the sheer geological power of Hawaii's subterranean stirrings. And the trip is entirely family-friendly: On a 12-hour guided tour with Hawaii Forest & Trail , you'll embark on a hike around the park, go romping through a dark lava tube, and enjoy views of the flowing lava from several key vantage points. Nature doesn't get any more thrilling.

Snorkeling in Belize

Belize's Great Blue Hole is not only one of the most mysterious — and beautiful — sites on Earth, it's also a must-visit destination for divers. Venturing all the way down is recommended for experienced divers only. But that doesn't mean the rest of us can't go exploring, too.

Snorkeling is a fun, beginner-friendly way to glimpse life below the surface. On Belize's largest island, Ambergris Caye, an area called Tres Coco is a wonderful place to start. Here, snorkelers benefit from large brain and elkhorn coral in waters that only about four to eight feet deep. You'll see not only tropical fish like yellowtail snapper and rainbow parrotfish, but also conch, banded shrimp, sea urchin, and stingrays.

A few miles off the southern tip of Ambergris Caye, you'll find Hol Chan Marine Reserve , another excellent destination for underwater thrills. The protected reserve is teeming with wildlife, including a sandy-bottom area that's become a gathering place for nurse sharks, hence the name: Shark Alley. Don't worry, though. Despite the sharks' intimidating appearance and rows of serrated teeth, they're harmless to humans, and will only respond aggressively if provoked.

Walking in the Treetops of the Guatemalan Jungle

If you're not afraid of heights, a visit to Guatemala's Tikal National Park might be in order. The UNESCO World Heritage site is best taken in from the treetops on a canopy tour, one popular thing to do in the park.

On one of these tours, you'll soar through the jungle via zipline. The route connects multiple platforms built about 100 feet above the forest floor, and it offers an impressive bird's-eye view of the flora and fauna. Along the way, naturalist guides will be able to identify any creatures — howler monkeys, ring-tailed coatimundi, jaguars, and toucans, to name a few — that catch your eye.

While you're here, stick around to explore the park's impressive Mayan ruins. Scattered throughout the park is a network of 3,000 ancient temples, monuments and dwellings — the largest excavated site in the Americas.

Climbing up Half Dome in Yosemite National Park

America's national parks are full of enchanting scenery, but nothing quite compares to the magnificent peaks of Yosemite Valley. The sheer granite cliffs appear to poke the heavens, while the gently cascading 2,400-foot waterfalls will make you think you've wandered straight into Neverland. For a truly unforgettable panorama, hike up Half Dome, one of the park's most recognizable monoliths.

Only 300 hikers are allowed to hike the trail each day. And when you start making your way up the near-vertical rock face, you'll understand why. A steel cable acts as a handrail, with a series of wooden slats for your shoes to grip onto. Due to the treacherous nature of the climb, things move very slowly, as folks do their best to advance up the rock without tumbling into the valley below. (Don't forget: The route is two-way, so you'll also have to navigate sharing the cables and foot rests with all the folks climbing down, too.)

To apply for a climbing permit, you have to enter the park's lottery in March, before the season starts. A limited number of permits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis; those can also be secured through the website. Don't forget to drink water while you're out there — and lots of it.

Trekking to Machu Picchu

If the idea of trekking through a stark landscape of craggy mountains and lush jungle sounds appealing, then maybe it's time you finally crossed Machu Picchu off your wish list.

A colorful mix of landscapes awaits hikers on the Salkantay trek, a pleasantly crowd-free alternative to the popular Incan Trail that leads to the archaeological wonder. The classic five-day itinerary begins with scaling Salkantay mountain, the 12th highest in Peru. It's hard work, but the endorphins greeting you at the top of the pass — not to mention those views — will be reward enough. From there, it's onto the delights of the Sacred Valley's "cloud forest," where you'll cross under waterfalls, go zip lining, and sleep in yurt-like tents with all meals catered by a team of guides.

By the time you finally reach Machu Picchu (at sunrise, no less) on the fifth day, it'll feel less like a wish-list item and more like the natural continuation of a landscape which, after sleeping outdoors and sharing meals with locals, you'll likely feel connected to. Enjoy the view from the top, you've earned it.

Skydiving Over Dubai

Dubai might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of adventure. The desert metropolis is typically associated with glamorous hotels, gold, and its iconic skyscraper, Burj Khalifa. But for those looking to skip the malls, skydiving is a fun way to see another side of Dubai — literally.

Picture this: You're freefalling at 120 miles an hour, having been dropped out of a plane 13,000 feet over Dubai. Below you, the famous Palm Islands are spread out like a painting made of sand. From above, you'll be able to make out the turquoise Persian Gulf, the symmetrical "fronds" of the islands, and the spiral structures that mark the Dubai skyline.

You'll be strapped to an instructor, of course. (Someone's got to make sure that parachute deploys!) After freefalling for 60 seconds, you'll float slowly over the city for five minutes, and between the views, the howling wind, and the pleasant feeling of weightlessness, the sensory overload will leave you grinning ear to ear. By the time you touch down, you'll probably want to toast your bravery with a glass of bubbly. Looks like that hotel bar will come in handy, after all.

10. Australia

With more than 30,000 miles of spectacular coastline , Down Under is ripe with adventure opportunities—most notably in the Outback and a little place called the Great Barrier Reef . Bonus: Given that its population-to-land ratio is so low (Australia is one of the least crowded countries in the world), you’ll even feel like you have huge stretches of it to yourself.

Adventures to try: Scuba diving off Lady Elliot Island; hiking through Tasmania's Bay of Fires; swimming under waterfalls in The Kimberley (just watch out for crocodiles).

Exploring the great outdoors is a premium for most vacationers. I’ve always thought that if you want to understand what any country is like, you can find its heart in the towns, but its soul is in the countryside.

Walking vacations are why I got started with ViaTravelers! Exploring towns and villages at street level is the only way to get a feel for a place, with walking or bike tours.

The same can be said for getting out of the city, too! Forest walks, hill hikes, and rural bicycle tours are magnificent ways to take in the countryside.

For centuries, mankind has used rivers, streams, and canals as natural highways to cross the country. Today, this is a delightful way to explore a destination.

These cruises come in all shapes and sizes depending on where you are in the world. Traveling for meetings is often a bore, but even so, it’s an opportunity to meet new faces and try new things. Conferences, on the other hand, have much more potential to rock.

Conferences are bedrock platforms for education, industry updates, and networking. They typically involve large groups from specific sectors. Anyone in the white-collar world is likely to attend a conference at least once in their careers.

I’ve lost count of the number of conferences I’ve attended over the years, and the destinations have ranged wildly from downtown convention centers to golf resorts in the countryside.

Gaining momentum, “bleisure” travel incorporates leisure time into a business trip, allowing travelers to enjoy destinations once work commitments conclude. Business travelers in the corporate world will find a lot of leisure time and excursions built into their travels by their hosts.

That said, as travel becomes more expensive and exclusive, there is a growing trend of business travelers taking an extra day or two or an extended layover at their business destination. These travel arrangements demand more careful planning to ensure productivity and appease employers.

5. Eco-Tourism

Eco-tourism represents a commitment to responsible tourism, which fosters conservation and sustainability. This travel philosophy is anchored in the principle of minimal impact on the environment and the enrichment of local communities.

Nature Adventures

Travelers explore untouched or pristine environments. The focus is on experiencing and learning about the natural world.

7. Volunteer Travel

It’s important to remind yourself that travel is a privilege. You might be the type of traveler who gives something back. Volunteer travel is the intersection of tourism and community service. Done right, this type of travel isn’t just about seeing new places; it’s about leaving a positive footprint.

Travelers contribute their time, energy, and skills to support local projects, ranging from environmental conservation to education. This altruistic approach is very popular with younger folks on their gap year. Teaching Opportunities

Educating and sharing knowledge with people from another culture is extremely rewarding, and I’ve found that this goes both ways. Most of my favorite teachers growing up were from overseas, each with a unique background and take on the U.S.

Likewise, giving talks abroad and mentoring folks who aren’t from the U.S. has exposed me to even more of this. It’s a truly human experience that is both rewarding regarding knowledge and what it does for the soul.

Conservation Efforts

The natural world is constantly under siege from man-made pollution—and let’s be frank, tourism and travel have to shoulder some of that blame. Efforts to mitigate and repair damage are frequently volunteer enterprises, reliant on travelers looking to engage in environmental work.

Community Development

A core part of humanitarian work is supporting local infrastructure and empowering residents to fend for themselves—but they need the foundations to start.

There are tons of volunteer organizations, from the Peace Corps to the Red Cross and smaller private ventures, that provide wells to villages without clean water.

Healthcare Projects

Providing medical support in underserved areas is for anyone who truly wants to help those in need. This can involve traveling out of state to help with the fallout of a natural disaster or flying to almost anywhere around the world.

It’s sad to say that anyone interested in traveling for healthcare projects will currently find themselves a dizzying list of destinations worldwide desperate for medical support and volunteers. This ranges from villages in Africa ravaged by AIDS to warzones like Palestine or Ukraine.

Military Service and Demining

Volunteer travel can raise awareness and foster meaningful social impact, yet it’s crucial to approach it with sensitivity to local needs and respect for the host community. Some folks like to see the world by answering the needs of a nation and paying the ultimate respect—even sacrifice.

Join the military; see the world – a maxim as old as war. With this comes much more risk, and your career (and “travels”) will be what you make of it. But one major perk will be your travels are paid for!

But there’s more. Many nations around the world will allow non-nationals to join their ranks, like the French or Ukranian Foreign Legions. That said, be mindful of potential legal consequences back home.

For those interested in repairing the damage from war but with all the risk of being in a warzone, you can look into a demining project. Landmines and other unexploded ordnance can lie dormant for many years after peace has been declared and can devastate local populations. Demining projects are extremely risky and require qualifications, but can make places safe to live again.

8. Dark Tourism

Dark tourism involves visiting locations associated with death, tragedy, or the macabre. These destinations offer a unique perspective on history and humanity. They often serve as poignant reminders and provide deep reflection opportunities for visitors.

Visiting dark tourism sites often evokes a reflective state, making life’s fragility and the consequences of human actions jarringly apparent. Reflection is key, driving a deeper appreciation for current societal norms and peace.

Dark tourism is not mere morbid curiosity (although, for some, it is); it’s about learning. These sites act as open-air classrooms, where every location teaches about the darker chapters of human history.

You can expect an educational experience that challenges perceptions and broadens knowledge. You might even learn something about yourself.

Historical Sites

Historical sites often form the core of dark tourism – the good news is they’re everywhere and increasingly accessible. From abandoned prisons like Alcatraz to concentration camps like Auschwitz , they tell stories of past events, providing a valuable educational component.

Disaster Sites

Places of horrific disasters have attracted the most extreme dark tourists. Many of these disaster sites are still extremely hazardous and even illegal to stray into.

Among these, the most famous is Chernobyl in Ukraine. The site is still highly radioactive to this day.

Ghost Towns

While Chernobyl isn’t exactly the safest place to scratch your dark tourism itch, there are ghost towns all over the world you can explore. Middle America and the Deep South are filled with abandoned cities, some as young as 20 years old. From corporate greed to natural disasters, the stories behind some of them would make you weep.

9. War Tourism

War Tourism involves traveling to regions known for their military history and legacy. It can involve visiting historical battlefields or exploring memorials and museums that capture the essence of past conflicts.

The allure of war tourism lies in its ability to bring pages of history books to life. It allows tourists to stand where soldiers once stood and reflect on the sacrifices made during tumultuous times. It’s a respectful approach to understanding military history, fostering a connection to the past that can be sobering and enlightening.

Historical Battlefields

Sites where historical military conflicts occurred. They offer an educational window into strategic battlegrounds that shaped history. There’s also a particularly broad spectrum of military museums. From the floating USS Texas to the enormous Duxford IWM, you can find a museum that meets a niche, catalogs a regiment, or documents a nation’s war history.

10. Pilgrimages and Sabbaticals

Sabbatical and Pilgrimage travel is an enduring form of journey tied to spirituality and self-discovery. These travelers embark on these journeys to connect with their faith, seeking personal or communal growth. Pilgrimage destinations are often linked to a religious narrative or a sacred site significant to a particular belief system.

Sabbatical destinations apply to virtually anywhere. They can also help kick off a taste for the digital nomad lifestyle.

• The Hajj : An Islamic pillar necessitating travel to Mecca.
• Mount Kailash: A Tibetan path promising good fortune after a three-day circuit.

Bear in mind that medical tourism can put unnecessary pressure on another country’s healthcare systems. Medical tourism should only be considered a last resort.

12. Space Tourism

Space tourism is a testament to human innovation and the enduring spirit of adventure. Those seeking a truly unique journey are looking towards the stars.

Historically, space exploration was exclusive to professional astronauts, but today, commercial endeavors are turning space travel into a reality for non-astronauts. Well, non-astronauts with a boatload of cash.

Although the number of actual space tourist flights is about the same length as most flights in minutes (around 20), the frequency of space tourist flights is increasing. While most flights are suborbital and last a few minutes, some private ventures have spent days in space, either in low Earth orbit or aboard the International Space Station.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, incredibly difficult to access, and insanely expensive. But with the increase in flights, prices are anticipated to decrease over time. Plus, space tourism is probably going to pave the way for off-Earth colonies such as the Moon or maybe even Mars.

What’s your travel type? Explore different types of travel experiences and travel types based on your interests, stye, and budget.

If you enjoy travelling, you already know it can be incredibly rewarding, enriching and spiritually fulfilling. Other benefits include improved productivity, better mental health, and lower stress. Not to mention, it’s nice to take a break from your everyday routine. 

But choose carefully because the type of travel you choose can be just as important as taking a vacation. Sometimes, it’s easier to find the perfect holiday by selecting the type of travel experience rather than choosing the destination first.

So what will you do?

Whether you’re a 30-something backpacker on a tight budget, a thrill-seeking adventurer, or a couple looking for a luxury trip with all the bells and whistles, I’ve put together a list of different types of travel and travel types for any budget and and type of tourist. 

 As the old saying goes, “Different strokes for different folks.”

Travel Types based on the length of time you can travel 

The length of time you have to travel will determine the pace, the cost and even the activities you do while on your trip.

Here are a few travel types based on the length of time you have to travel. 

1) Day Trip 

Out of all the types of travel, day trips are the most underrated.

The great thing about day trips is you don’t have to wait for vacation days to take one. Travelling to nearby cities and towns is a quick and easy way to scratch your travel itch, recharge your batteries and escape your everyday routine.

2) The weekender

A step up from the day trip is the weekend traveller who travels or vacations on the weekend. 

This type of traveller might love nothing more than to get away for a month to a faraway Italian villa, but because of money, time, family obligations or work, it’s just not in the cards.

Short weekend getaways are the obvious type of travel to feed your wanderlust until your next big adventure. You can hop on a plane Friday and return on Sunday or take a weekend road trip and make the most of the short time you have.

3) Staycation – The local traveller who never leaves the country

The world is your oyster during your staycation, and the possibilities are endless.

5) High-Risk Area Traveler

For those considering certain types of travel involving high-risk areas, such as Afghanistan or Iran, I strongly encourage you to take precautions. 

Depending on the travel destination, travelling to high-risk countries and locations could jeopardize your life and increase your risk of getting kidnapped, theft, or serious injury.

Here are some travel tips:

• Develop a communication plan with family and friends so that they can monitor your safety and location as you travel through high-risk areas. 
• Leave DNA samples with your medical provider in case your family must access them.
• Erase any sensitive photos, comments, or other materials from your social media pages, cameras, laptops, and other electronic devices that local groups could consider controversial or provocative.
• Leave your expensive/sentimental belongings behind.

6) Adventure Traveller

Adventure travel is a type of travel that involves a certain degree of risk (real or perceived), which may also require special skills and physical activities.

For this type of tourist, your options are unlimited, from bungy jumping off suspended bridges and swimming with sharks to trekking through the jungle and biking across an entire country.

Many types of travel involving adventure can be planned independently, while others will need to go through a tour operator.

Some procedures people undergo on medical tourism trips include dental care, surgery, cosmetic surgery, fertility treatments, organ and tissue transplants, and cancer treatment.

9) Volunteer Travel adventure

If you would rather experience life in a foreign culture with locals rather than tourists, consider volunteer travel. 

You might volunteer to teach English, build water wells in some remote part of Africa, or help care for elephants in Cambodia.

10) Cultural Immersion Travel:

Cultural immersion travel refers to the experience of fully engaging in the customs, traditions, and daily life of a different culture. The type of travel can involve homestays, living with a host family, attending local festivals, volunteering in the community, taking language classes, and participating in cultural activities such as dance, cooking, or handicraft workshops.

11) Pilgrimage or Faith-based types of travel

For simplicity, let’s define a pilgrimage as a prolonged journey to a sacred place, traditionally done as an act of religious devotion. 

No one knows for sure the true origins of a pilgrimage, but they’ve existed in many world religions since antiquity, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Shinto.

Before modern transportation, pilgrims travelled by foot, walking hundreds of kilometres to pilgrimage sites.

14) Casino & Gambling Tourism

The gambling holiday trend as a whole is growing each year. Some people travel for tournaments, while others enjoy travelling to luxurious gambling resorts for the amenities. 

Before heading out on a gambling holiday, it makes sense to put limits on how much you spend by placing a hold on your funds after a certain amount.

This may seem over the top, but it’s worth putting these protections in place because it’s easy to get carried away with gambling, especially if you’re enjoying a holiday.

• Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Travel types based on the luggage you travel with

As strange as it sounds, your luggage can define you as a traveller.

Do you want to travel light, with just backpacks, or do you want suitcases with wheels and packs for almost any occasion?

15) The Backpacker

Forget about the grungy hitchhiking backpacker who doesn’t shower for weeks. Backpacking has evolved, and it’s a growing sector of the travel industry that just about everyone’s trying at least once.

Typically, this travel type travels with their possessions in a backpack that can easily be carried for long distances or long periods. 

You might be on a tight budget to make your money last, so you eat on the cheap and stay at inexpensive accommodations like hostels where you share rooms, bathrooms and a communal kitchen with other backpackers.

It’s not uncommon for you to wash all five pairs of underwear in the sink and hang them on the portable laundry chord you carry in your backpack along with your portable sheets and your instant Ramen before moving on to your next city.

It sounds rough, but you love it. Besides, there’s something to be said about travelling this way and meeting interesting people.

16) The FlashPacker

The flashpacker is a travel typer that is essentially a flashy + backpacker, and the concept is similar to glamping (glamour camping) in that it blends something traditionally rugged with a bit of luxury.

Flashpacker is a relatively new term that is catching on and is being accepted into mainstream language. 

You’re probably older than the average backpacker. You might even be married with kids.

Much like the backpacker, you love the mobility of having all your possessions in one bag so you can move freely and quickly from place to place, staying as long or as short as you like.

Like the backpacker, you might be price conscious; however, if you felt like it, you could easily stay at swankier hotels, eat at higher-end sit-down restaurants and splurge for the latest and greatest travel gear and electronics.

How Much Money You Got?

17) luxury travel.

For you, luxury travel goes beyond staying in a four-star hotel or sipping champagne on a yacht in the Bahamas. It’s more about a unique experience.

Luxury travel involves partaking in the tiny details where you feel pampered and all your personal needs are met.

No work, no stressing, just relaxing. Upon your return home, you feel refreshed.

Often, luxury travellers forgo little vacations throughout the year so they can afford to take that one perfect luxury vacation.

18) Budget Traveller

A budget traveller is someone who either doesn’t have a lot of money to spend on Five-star hotels or chooses to travel on a budget to make their money last as long as possible and travel longer.

Typically, this type of tourist likes to keep expenses down by eating on the cheap, staying in low-cost accommodations and hostels and taking public transportation over more expensive modes of transportation.

Budget travellers also might travel to destinations, and house sit or dog sit in exchange for free room and board—a win-win situation for both parties.

Or there’s always Couchsurfing. 

Do you travel alone or with others?

Who you travel with has as much to do with your style as where you want to go and what you do during your travels. I’ve broken out these travel types by the people you travel with or without.

19) Travel With Pet

Bringing your pet on vacation and travelling to new destinations with them means you don’t have to worry about hiring someone to watch them while you’re gone, which can be both costly and worrisome.

You also get to spend time with them without missing them or wondering how they’re doing. 

Typically, dog owners bring their furry friends on the road, but cat owners have been known to bring their felines along for the ride, too. 

Make sure you research because many countries have strict health, quarantine, and customs requirements for pets.

If you decide to take your pet abroad, check with the embassies of the countries you’ll be going to for any specific requirements they may have. And make sure to check well in advance so you have enough time to get everything in order. 

20) Solo Travel

You’re a solo female traveller or just a dude who wants to see the world on your terms. You might like travelling long term across the globe or short term travel.

Solo travellers are typically young but could just as easily be in their 80s. You love the challenge of travelling alone, meeting new people, and befriending the locals.

You can come and go as you please because you’re not hindered by the opinions of a companion traveller.

You’ll probably learn a lot about yourself along the way, too.

If you’re a female solo traveller, you may need to take extra precautions for safety reasons.

21) Couples Travel

Whether you’re married, dating or travelling with a friend, the types of travel open to you as a couple are endless.

Sometimes, it’s tough travelling with a partner because you need to consider the other person’s travel interests and needs, which don’t always align with yours. However, that’s okay because the rewards outweigh any sacrifices you make.

Together, you’re creating memories, growing closer, sharing experiences and learning what makes each other tick.

You just need to agree on where you want to go.

22) Travelling Family With Kids

It’s hard travelling with kids, and you don’t always get to take the romantic trips you took before the kids came along, but you enjoy letting your kids see the world and then seeing the world through their eyes.

23) All-Inclusive Group Tour

If you’re the type of tourist who likes everything taken care of for you, all-inclusive group tours are an easy and cost-effective way to enjoy a vacation without all the fuss of planning everything. You get to enjoy the amenities and food more than stressing over what to do next.

24) (LGBTI) travellers: Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, and Intersex

Technically, you could fall under one of the other groups, like a solo traveller or couples travel. However, because you’re LGBTI, you might also like to find gay-lesbian-friendly venues and activities so that you can meet with other like-minded individuals. No big deal if you don’t because it’s all about the travel experience .

But don’t forget that LGBTI travellers have unique challenges when travelling abroad.

Some countries have laws and attitudes that may affect your safety and ease of travel. Many countries don’t legally recognize same-sex marriage, and more than 70 countries consider same-sex relationships a crime punishable by law.

25) Senior Traveller

There’s no age limit for travel. For retirees and seniors, it might be the perfect time to get out and take that road trip or explore the other side of the globe.

Some options for seniors are travel tours and organized activities to take the stress out of planning, giving you a chance to meet other travellers who travel at your pace.

Don’t forget, as a senior, you can take advantage of senior discounts at museums, tours and sometimes at restaurants. 

26) Disabled travel

The tourism industry is finally waking up to the special needs of travellers with disabilities. There are many more services and better accommodations for “Disabled travel” and an abundance of information online.

Remember that the laws regarding accessibility for persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities vary from country to country.

Unlike the United States, enforcement of accessibility and other laws relating to persons with disabilities is inconsistent.

You define the way you travel by your mode of transportation.

27) Train Travel

If you’re the type of tourist who loves road trips but doesn’t want to be burdened with the actual driving, then train travel might be for you. 

Nothing compares to the experience, from the incredible views and the comfortable onboard amenities to the ability to get from city centre to city centre quickly and easily.

Countries well suited for train travel are ones with an extended and well-connected train line:

• Switzerland
• Orient Express. 

The beauty of train travel is you hop on and off and explore the cities at each stop or continue to the next one. You don’t have to go through airline security, and there are virtually no weather delays.  If your train gets delayed, no problem; catch the next one or exchange your ticket for a new destination on the spot.

28) Wheels-Road Trip

Do you believe the journey is the destination best enjoyed in an RV, a car or on a Harley motorcycle? Do you love the sights, smells, sounds and excitement of the open road?

You might be a roadie.

If you have kids, you’re probably better off touring around in an RV and homeschooling while staying connected to the road-tripper community.

Some road-trippers stay within the confines of their home country, while others choose to travel internationally for their road trip experience.

29)  Cruise Ship 

Cruise ships are a form of tourism that’s taken off. It’s a little like staying in a floating resort.

Cruise packages often include everything you need, from nightly entertainment, pools, casinos, workout rooms and dancing.

Many cruise ships also have kids’ clubs where kids can go and hang out to meet other kids their own age in a safe environment. 

There are cruises for just about every type of traveller, age, demographic or theme.

Camping with a twist

30) Glamping

If you’re the type of traveller who likes the idea of camping but doesn’t want to give up little creature comforts like toilets and showers in enclosed areas, then glamping may be for you. 

Glamping (glamour + camping) is where camping gets a little glamour facelift. 

The array of glamping sites has skyrocketed, and you can find anything from glamping in bubble hotels , sleeping in beautifully decorated yurts or an upscale tent with wicker furniture and catered meals. 

31) Treehouse

Nothing will thrill your inner kid more than spending a magical night or two high in the treetops like Robinson Caruso.

It’s a magical experience that joins the forest experience and camping together for a fun-filled family vacation or romantic couples getaway.

Every treehouse venue is a little different.

Some have intricate bridges connecting multiple treehouses.

Some treehouse hotels have interesting ways of delivering meals, such as a breakfast basket delivered to your tree, which you pull up using a rope and pulley.

Some can sleep 5 or more people, while others are tiny and shaped like a dome. 

Homeschooling and Educating While On The Road

You’re a family who wants to travel full-time or long-term with school-aged children and want to give your kids the best education you can.

Many people who travel long-term choose to do a form of homeschooling.

Your kids don’t attend school in the traditional sense.

You, the parent, are the teacher, using the world around you and material either online or purchased following a curriculum created by yourself but probably guided by some standard in your home country.

33) Un-Schooler / WorldSchooler 

If you’re familiar with John Holt, he coined the term un-schooler, which essentially is a system where parents educate their children using the resources and guidance around them and inside of them.

It is more of a “child-driven learning” based on following your instincts and your child’s interests and not necessarily using any of the usual school resources.

The term un-schooler has some negative connotations mainly because it’s a term used to describe what IT IS NOT.

The term “world schooler” is broader, more descriptive, and often seen as a more positive term than an un-schooler.

Just like it sounds, the whole world is your school instead of school being your whole world. Rather than seeing and reading about things in a textbook, kids experience things firsthand.

Some other terms used to describe this type of schooling are Travel Schooler / Educational Traveller / Free-range kids.

Temporary Break To Travel Or Live Abroad

34) career break.

You have a career, but you’re feeling a little burnt out from the 9 to 5 lifestyle.

You want to travel and see the world for a few months, maybe a year, maybe longer.

Along the way, you might even do something you’ve always wanted to do, like learn a language, write a book or volunteer abroad.

Whatever you do, career breaks are a great way to escape the rat race for a while.

35) Sabbatical / Gap Year

A sabbatical is a term that has been used to refer to tenured teachers who take a year off from teaching to further their education or do something worthwhile.

Nowadays, the term sabbatical is used by anyone who wants to take a break from work. It’s closely related to a career break. 

Gap Year tourism

A gap year is a term that has traditionally been very popular in Europe and the UK, but it’s gaining popularity in other places like the US and Canada.

Originally, a gap year referred to a young person just out of high school who takes a year off to travel and maybe do some volunteer work or backpack around the world for a year before entering University.

As of late, many people have adopted this terminology to describe their travels, particularly adults, professionals, and even families.

All three of these terms ( gap year, sabbatical year, career break trave l) are closely related, and some would argue that they are the same. You be the judge.

36) Slow Travel

Some like to travel fast, zipping from one tourist destination to the next, while others like to take it slow, really slow, spending as much as a few weeks to a few months in one place before moving on. 

A slow traveller’s goal is probably to explore each destination thoroughly and experience the local culture rather than hitting all the guidebook tourist spots.

37) Long Term Travel / Nomad

A long-term traveller and a nomad traveller are often used interchangeably to describe someone who travels for an extended period of time and may even have no real permanent home base.

Nomad travellers often ditch the daily grind and drop out of normal life so they can have a more flexible and spontaneous travel style. They tend to move from place to place in search of new experiences and adventures for several months to years at a time, immersing themselves in different cultures, learning new languages, and exploring the world in a more profound and meaningful way.

Because you’re travelling for an extended period of time with no permanent home, you’re probably a flash-packer or backpacker.

Other terms related to long-term travel include Full-Time Traveller, Vagabond, Gypsy, Hobo, Nomad, and perpetual traveller.

38) Digital Nomads – Location Independent travellers

You love to travel, but you need to make some cash along the way to help fund your travels.

You might teach English here and there or have a job back home that you can do remotely.

Still, others are working to create a business using nothing but their computer, the Internet and an idea. For example, freelance writers, photographers, consultants, web & graphic designers, and Internet marketers, to name a few.

You’re pretty tech-savvy, and you’ve figured out a way to leverage technology and work wherever and whenever you want – whether it be from home, a beach in the Bahamas, at your favourite coffee shop or on the other side of the world! 

You’re basically a nomadic or location-independent entrepreneur, and you use your phones, tablets and laptops along with some useful web applications to earn an income.

39) Expat 

As an expat (expatriate) or immigrant, you choose to live abroad in one place for an extended period.

It might be for a year or two, which can turn into your new forever home. 

Maybe you have a job that transplanted you, or maybe you decided to take a life sabbatical or career break and foot the bill yourself.

Most likely, you’ll need special visas that will allow you to live in that foreign country beyond the usual 30, 60 or 90 days tourists are typically allowed to stay in foreign countries legally.   

You’re immersed in that culture, and If you have kids, they’re also immersed, maybe even attending school.

Whatever your travel type or type of tourist you are, knowing all your choices can sometimes shed light and open new doors to opportunities you didn’t know existed.

I genuinely believe choosing the right type of travel will knock your socks off and leave you with unforgettable memories that you can’t stop talking about.
