Hog Hunting Tips

Alabama Wild Hog

  • Hogs have a great sense of smell, so have the wind direction in your favor.
  • Set up near water holes and wallows.
  • Midday is a great time for hunting hogs; we see lots of them in the middle of the day.
  • Because hogs are populating at an alarming rate, our hunts in Alabama and Georgia constantly have an open season.
  • Hogs tend to be a more aggressive hunt. Extreme caution is always warranted as they are more prone to attack.
  • With the possibility of attack, your weapon of choice is important. The correct caliber of bullet is essential in guaranteeing a kill.
  • Hogs are more likely to attack when wounded. Always make sure your boar or sow is dead before approaching. Sometimes, a seemingly dead hog may simply be wounded, and injury can occur if you get too close.

Hog Hunting in Alabama

It is never a rush so when you arrive you can unpack, gear up, and review the particulars and rules and your hog hunting trip is ready to start. We start by taking you out to your stand. For your convenience we have buddy stands, tripod stands, box stands and ground blinds. Shots to the feeders are about one hundred yards, though in some spots you can shoot a couple hundred yards. After each sit, which is usually 10 am morning pickup and dark for evening pickup you will return to the main lodge while we provide skinning services for your harvested hog. Between your morning and afternoon hog hunt you are welcome to go fishing on one of our lakes. We have two heavily stocked bass lakes along with lots of bream.

Typical Hog Hunting Outfitter Day at Oakridge

Hog Hunting in Alabama at Oakridge starts before daylight. Everyone is up in time to eat a hearty breakfast and then it is off to the woods. The morning Hog Hunts are usually in hardwood bottoms, open fields with feeders and baiting stations. Your guide will take you to your stand and will pick you up at whatever time you would like to break. Hog hunting packages that include meals will be served Continental early before daylight, lunch around noon, and dinner after your return to the Main lodge. Hog Hunting at Night is usually about 1-2 hours before sunset and picked up from your hog hunting stand around 10 pm. If you hunt later than 10 pm you will not have a morning hunt because both the guides and you will need a good night’s sleep. Our food plots range in size from one acre up to over five acres. Shots range anywhere from fifteen yards up to three hundred yards, click here to see the views of our stands. If you choose an all-inclusive hog hunting trip package at the end of the day you will enjoy a large southern style dinner cooked by your personal chefs at the Main Hunting Lodge.

The Hog Hunting Lodge

Four or more hunters at the Hog Hunting Lodge is a full-service hog hunting experience where you will enjoy fully prepared meals and private sleeping quarters. The main lodge is a renovated 1920's style dog trot house, with 3 bedrooms, 2 private bathrooms, and a 1/2 bath. The lodge is in the middle of the hunting property only one mile from the highway. No driving is necessary once you have reached the lodge unless by choice. Three meals per day are prepared for overnight guests. There are two ponds behind the main lodge that are available for fishing if you like. All groups are kept private, in Oak Ride Lodge, and we can host 8 people comfortably.

We also provide you with an area to check your rifle sights!

Alabama Hog Hunting Trip Packages

We offer Hog Hunting 7 days a week and generally hunt mid-February until October 1st each year! Size or cutter length does not matter, they all count as one. No Trophy Fees Ever at Oakridge!

Oakridge Hunting Lodge starts Outfitting for hog in mid-February and usually goes through the first of October. Oakridge Hog hunting at night usually takes place in the late evenings into the night around 10 pm but can go later if needed. During strong morning hog activity, we will adjust your hunting times accordingly. Hog hunting with thermal or Night Vision is not a necessity but makes a huge improvement. Hog Hunting Lights in red or green that can attach to your scope or stock works as well.

A three-day hog hunt runs from noon on your arrival date until noon on your departure date for a total of four sits. You may harvest one hog per sit and No Trophy Fees Ever at Oakridge Hunting Lodge. One example of a 3-day hog hunt would be to arrive at noon on a Friday and hog hunt that same afternoon, hunt am and pm of the next day Saturday, and then hunt the morning of Sunday until around 10 then depart around noon on that same day.

Daylight Hog Hunting Packages

  • Daylight 3-Day hog hunt Main Lodge, guide, NO meals, NO minimum hunter requirements, and 4 hogs total per hunter (one per sit). $1,500/hunter.
  • All-Inclusive Daylight 3-day hog hunt Main Lodge with meals, guide, and 4 hogs total per hunter (one per sit), minimum 4 hunters. $1,800/hunter.

Hog Hunting at Night

Oakridge Hog hunting at night is very productive. Be prepared to shoot in low light conditions. This is when the largest of hogs come out and are not easily spooked by flashlight beams at night. We recommend using your own Thermal Imaging equipment for this type of hunt, but you can use a red or green LED style hog hunting light attached to your scope or stock as well. Oakridge has two Night Hunting Thermal setups for use at a rate of $200 each per night, ammunition included. Oakridge Thermal rentals require a separate agreement and for you to familiarize yourself and shoot this weapon prior to your evening hunt.

Hog Hunting at Night is an add on to your day hunt and is $200/hunter/night so you can choose the number of nights to hunt. Night Hog Hunting usually runs until 10 pm unless other arrangements are made prior to your reservation. Includes one hog any size per hunter per sit and NO TROPHY FEES!

  • Hog Hunting at Night: Additional $200/hunter.
  • Hog Hunting with Thermal Rental: $200/day.
  • One hog per sit is included with each package price but additional hogs may be harvested at $100/harvest.

Please make note that the Oakridge Hog Hunting Lodge package prices do not include a tip for your Hog Hunting Guide or processor, which are customary for a successful hunt and very much appreciated.

If you shoot a hog which means your guide finds hair or blood and we are unable to find and recover it, that hog will count against your limit. This policy helps eliminate indiscriminate shots. However, we will do everything in our power to find your hog. You will see we are going the extra mile to make your Alabama Hog Hunting successful! Please remember that your guide is always in charge. The hunt ends when your guide feels they have exhausted all resources in the attempt to recover your hog.

WELCOME TO WATER VALLEY LODGE

Water Valley Lodge is the destination for outdoorsman looking for a first-class hunting operation. Located in rural Choctaw County, Alabama, Water Valley offers whitetail deer hunting, Eastern turkey hunting and wild hog hunting.

Our 17,000 square foot lodge facilities offers guest rooms with private baths, dining hall with a fireplace and satellite television, a large recreation room with a fireplace offering billiards, big screen tv, and more, porches with rocking chairs. Year-round the lodge is available for corporate retreats, meetings, professional seminars and or other events. Consider Water Valley Lodge for your business meetings. Handicap accessible rooms and baths are available. Non-hunters are welcome.

Alabama whitetail hunting season runs from October 15 until February 10 each year. During an Alabama whitetail hunting season wild hogs may also be hunted (wild hogs, varmints and predators may be hunted year-round in Alabama). Add to this that there is no season nor are there any bag limits on varmints or predators and Alabama are home to the famous January / February rut.

What this means is a hunter at Water Valley Lodge may hunt whitetail deer, hogs, predators, and varmints in the same hunt, with multiple limits on all.

Mid to late February is the designated "best" time for hog hunting at Water Valley. February is a cold month and the deer hunting pressure is over. The guides at Water Valley can devote all efforts to hog hunting only after deer season ends. What a great time to be in Alabama!

Turkey hunting at Water Valley sees some years at 100% success rate. This success does vary from year-to-year but our guides are second to none. Multiple kills during a turkey hunt are common.

Please have a look at our web site showing what Water Valley looks like, how we operate and what we have to offer. In addition to visiting our web site, please feel free to call or email us.

Alabama Hog Control

ALABAMA HOG HUNTING

Alabama Hog Control is all about high volume animal removal with hogs being the primary species. Day and night hunts are available. Hunters wishing to select the night option will be issued a custom built AR semi-automatic rifle in the 6.5 Grendel. This weapon will utilize a military grade thermal scope. Hunters will able to select from the different brands of thermal optic scopes that we sell. These include Pulsar and ATN.

The Day option will allow hunters to pick between spot and stalk and stand hunting methods. The hunter will bring their own weapon(s) and ammo for these hunts. These hunt locations will take place on plantations and hunting properties that have serious hog population problems.

REMINDER  – The goal of these hunts is to remove as many animals as safely possible. The guides will be part of the hunt and shooting right along with the hunters.

A good hunt with accurate shooters could possibly accomplish kills in the 20+ range per hunt. An average night will result in kills in the 10+ range.

Do you have what it takes to reach those numbers? Come out and be a part of AHC team and enjoy hog hunting the effective and efficient way! These hunts are all about removing as many hogs as possible. We are not managing hog populations nor are we trophy hunting. While there will be many large boars killed, we do not target them. We are trying our best to work ourselves out of a job on each and every property. We have plenty of properties to operate on that contain large hog populations. We are counting on satisfied landowners telling other landowners of our excellent performance.

5 Reliable Spots for Hunting Hogs in Alabama

hog hunting trips alabama

Curious about hunting feral hogs in Alabama? Tired of hunting deer, duck, or turkey, and wanting a larger challenge? Want to take a hog hunting trip, but don’t know the best places to hunt? Below are the best places in Alabama to hunt feral hogs, as well as some tips and advice to make your hunting trip a success.

hog hunting trips alabama

With no known natural predators, a voracious appetite, and the ability to breed quickly, feral hogs are an invasive species to the American South. Hogs prey on native reptiles, deer, and other mammals, erode natural watershed areas, and uproot native plant species, making them one of the most destructive invasive species in the country.

As of 2021, they are found in all counties in Alabama, and most counties in Southern states. This means that your chances for a successful hog hunt are high, if you know where to look. If executed properly, there is a good chance that you will be able to dispatch a hog on your first trip.

Having been introduced originally by Hernando de Soto and his explorers, feral hogs are considered a nuisance animal with highly destructive properties. As a result, they have caused vast amounts of property damage within the South and have become a battle for farmers and private landowners alike. This has resulted in a year-round hunting season for wild hogs.

hog hunting trips alabama

They are destructive, aggressive, highly intelligent, and strong, making them a challenge for even the most seasoned hunter. Their reproduction rate makes it difficult to keep the population under control. In recent years, hog hunting has drawn eager hunters from all over the country. Hopefully, with the tips and locations below, you can find success while hog hunting in Alabama, and be safe while doing so.

Eufaula, Alabama:

hog hunting trips alabama

They have expert hunting guides available to give you tips for success, and they welcome all levels of experience. They also offer deer, turkey, and elk hunts.  They have no bag limit.

Vredenburgh, Alabama:

hog hunting trips alabama

About an hour and a half south of Montgomery is the town of Vredenburgh, Alabama. There, you can contact Red Road Outdoors ( https://redroadoutdoors.com/ ) to organize a hog hunt. They have no bag limit and do have someone available for cleaning and quartering your harvested game. As a bonus, Red Road Outdoors also has deer hunting available for hunters in deer season.

hog hunting trips alabama

At Pushmataha Plantation in Butler, Alabama, ( https://alahunt.com/services/ ) you can hunt hogs with no bag limit. Butler, Alabama is an hour south of Montgomery, Alabama and boasts some of the highest populations of feral hogs within the state, guaranteeing a chance at success. They also offer turkey and deer hunts, and special event rentals.

Waterloo, Alabama:

hog hunting trips alabama

With one amazing hunting lodge, Waterloo Lodge, located in the heart of the town in Alabama, there has been an explosion of the feral hog population. Waterloo, located in Eastern Lauderdale County, is a small town on the Tennessee River that is known for its deer and turkey hunting and fishing, and has recently become known for its hog hunting as well. Your best bet is to contact one of the hunting clubs in that area or a private landowner, as many hunts are word-of-mouth in Lauderdale County. About an hour west of the town of Florence, it is rural enough for hunters of all skill levels.

Union Springs, Alabama:

hog hunting trips alabama

Located in Bullock County in South Alabama near Montgomery, Black Creek Plantation ( http://blackcreekhunting.com/alabamahoghunting.html ) boasts another great place to hunt hogs. They offer 1, 2, or 3 day hunts, as well as annual memberships. As a bonus, they also offer deer and turkey hunting, and fishing, too.

Final Considerations:

When hunting hogs in Alabama, it is best to hunt from February to May, when it doesn’t get as hot and the mosquitos aren’t as prevalent. However, because hogs are considered a nuisance animal, they are legal to hunt all year round. The summer months, especially in South Alabama, can be particularly hot and humid, so make sure to stay hydrated and dress appropriately.

Hog Hunting

hog hunting trips alabama

Fifty years ago, Russian boar were introduced into Choctaw County and quickly became a nuisance. They are prolific reproducers and can do tremendous damage to row crops and pine plantations. Our swamp land along with a majority of our 16,000 acres contains an abundance of hogs and allows a hunter to harvest as many as they can kill. We do not have a limit of the number of hogs that may be killed on your hunt.

Hogs can be hunted year round; however the end of February until the first part of April is an ideal time in which to hunt. The weather is still cool and the mosquitoes are still manageable. With a conservation damage permit, we are allowed to hunt hogs at night which is when they are active during the summer months.

For more information, or to book your hunt, please contact us today.

Located just off Alabama Highway 10 and only minutes away from nearby Meridian, MS, Pushmataha Plantation not only offers avid hunters a chance to fulfill their dreams of that special kill but also provides ample space for corporate retreats, luncheons, and small, private events.
