Categories Exempt from Tourist Visa

An Abu Dhabi visit visa is free of charge upon arrival at  Abu Dhabi International Airport  for citizens of the following countries:

• September 27, 2023 The UAE announced its plans to implement the GCC visa which will operate just like the Schengen visa. This visa will allow travelers to enter any of the GCC countries, which includes, the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain without any constraints. Currently the GCC countries residents can move across borders without limitations, but foreigners must apply for visa to be allowed entry. ( Source: Gulfnews )
• July 25, 2023 The 90 days leisure visa was re-introduced after it was scrapped off in 2022. travelers who wish to extend their stay in the UAE to explore more can apply for this visa. • May 31, 2023 The UAE Immigration eliminated the 10-day grace period for prepaid visit visa holders. You can now only stay for 30 or 60 days, according to your visa validity, after which you must exit the country. • Febraury 06, 2023 ICP introduced a new service that allows prepaid visa holders to extend their 30- or 60-days visa by exiting the country and then coming back. ( Source: ICP UAE )

• September 27, 2022 If you want to layover or change flights in a UAE airport, you need to apply for either a 48 hour or 96-hour transit visa. Airport transit visas cannot be extended.
• August 20, 2022 Kids aged 15 years and below do not need to take the Covid-19 PCR test before entering the UAE.

Can I fly back to my country and revisit UAE ?

Absolutely! If you do not prefer other visa extension methods listed above, we can help you obtain a new visa in 8 to 24 hours after exiting the UAE. However, this visa extension method is costly and more hectic since you have to book a return ticket to your country.

What are the fines for overstaying ?

If you stay past your visa validity dates, you will be charged 50 AED per day for each day you overstay in the UAE.

How can I pay my overstay fine ?

You can pay visa fines at the immigration counter in the airport while exiting the country or reach out to us for assistance.

What happens if immigration rejects my extension application when I do airport to airport visa change ?

In case of visa extension denial while at the airport, book a flight to your home country immediately and exit the country. You will cater for your own flight ticket arrangements.

What is included in the airport-to-airport visa extension package ?

The Airport-to-airport visa change package includes a UAE visa processing charge, VAT, service charge and a return flight ticket.

Do US citizens need a visa for Dubai ?

US Nationals do not need a visa to travel to Dubai. They are eligible for a free 30 days on arrival visa which an be extended for another 30 days.

How about a Dubai visa for US green card holders ?

Indian nationals with a valid US Green Card are eligible for an UAE on-arrival visa valid for 14 days. The visa can be extended for more 14 days. If you wish to stay in the UAE for longer than 30 days, it is advisable to just apply for the prepaid visa.

How does a Dubai tourist visa renewal after expiry work ?

The UAE immigration allows you to apply for visa extension even if you have overstayed your visa. however, you first have to pay the penalties accrued before exiting the country.

I've obtained my 60 days UAE visa through Air Arabia. Shall I extend with a local tour operator ?

If you obtained your UAE visa through Etihad Airways, Emirates Airline, Fly Dubai or Air Arabia, you must contact the respective airline to extend your visa. Contact us to help you obtain a new visa.

Is the Oman visa run open now?

Due to my residence permit process, I am overstaying my current tourist visa permit. What will happen to me?

If your visa status hasn’t changed from tourist to residence, and you tourist visa has already expired, you are liable to pay the daily overstaying fines. The best way to approach this issue is to apply for a visa extension as you await your resident visa to process. Alternatively, you can exit UAE and come back when your resident visa is ready.

Do GCC residents get free visas on arrival and do not need to extend them ?

While GCC citizens enter the UAE visa free, GCC residents who are nationals of countries not eligible for UAE on arrival visas must apply for prepaid visa to be allowed entry. The visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days.

Do US citizens need a visa for Oman?

No! USA citizens are eligible for the on-arrival visa to Oman.

Visa on arrival now available in abu dhabi.

We’re flying to up to 60 destinations this winter; connecting the world through Abu Dhabi and offering guests the freedom to change their travel plans if they need to. 

Visa on arrival now available in Abu Dhabi Guests can enter Abu Dhabi if they are a UAE national or resident, or if they are eligible for a visa on arrival . When guests arrive in Abu Dhabi, they must follow the quarantine guidelines in place and self-isolate for 10 days in Abu Dhabi.  UAE residents and nationals in Phase III of the vaccine trials or taking part in the National Vaccination Programme  travelling on a direct flight from any of the green list countries are exempt from quarantine on arrival to Abu Dhabi.  Please find more information .

If guests are travelling to another emirate including Dubai, they will simply need to follow the quarantine rules of that emirate. Guests only need to quarantine in Dubai until they receive their negative COVID-19 test result, which is taken on arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport. This is usually received within the same day. 

Guests are only permitted to travel to another emirate by Etihad Chauffeur, Etihad Express Coach or Airport Taxi. UAE residents are reminded to visit uaeentry.ica.gov.ae before they travel to submit their passport number and Emirates ID number. They will receive instant verification of their UAE entry status in line with their residence visa validity. Guests should always check the latest travel regulations before they fly.

The Abu Dhabi Tourist Visa Explained – Rule Changes in 2022

On this page, we detail everything you need to know about tourist visas for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Note that these visa rules apply no matter which Emirate you come in and out of.

We have updated this page following changes to the visa system in October 2022.

We have attempted to provide clear and accurate information; however, at the time of writing, some aspects of the new Visa system are not entirely clear during this transition period. This page will be amended as soon as more official information becomes available.

In addition to requiring a visa to enter the country as a tourist, please keep abreast of current COVID-19 requirements . As of 7 November, 2022, the Al Hosn “Green Pass” requirement was abolished .

Who needs to apply for a Tourist Visa?

Anyone not a GCC national or eligible for a visa on arrival (see list below) must apply for a visa in advance to visit the UAE.

You can apply either through your airline or UAE-registered tour operator for the appropriate visa.

• Visa services from Etihad Airways
• Visa Services offered by Emirates Airline
• Visa services from Fly Dubai
• Visa services from Air Arabia

A single entry transit visa for less than 48 hours is free, whilst of 4-day short-stay, visa costs 50AED.

A 30-day, single-entry visa costs in the region of 350 AED, depending on the service that you use to obtain it. Alternatively, a 60-day single-entry visa costs in the region of 650 AED. Both 30 and 60-day single-entry visit visas can be extended for a further 30 days for a fee of 960 AED.

Note that people under the age of 18 cannot apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

Visa-Free Entry to the UAE

Citizens from  GCC Countries   do not need to apply for a visa on arrival to the UAE.

Countries eligible for Visa on Arrival

Upon landing at Abu Dhabi International Airport, simply make your way to immigration, where your visa will be issued.

These countries are currently eligible for a FREE visit visa on arrival to the UAE:

• Czech Republic
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• New Zealand
• People’s Republic of China
• Republic of El Salvador
• Republic of Mauritius
• Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
• South Korea
• Switzerland
• United Kingdom
• United States of America
• Vatican City

A visit visa for most of these countries lasts for 60 days and can be renewed for another 30 days twice. If you overstay a visit visa, the fine is 200 AED for the first day and 100 AED per day after that – see more below on overstays.

There is a 10-day grace period (this means that you won’t be fined for overstaying your visa until Day 70). 

Note that the 26 countries in the Schengen Zone had previously been allowed to stay in the UAE for 90 days, although it is unclear whether this is still the case following the immigration reforms of October 2022.

Five-Year Multi-Visit Visa (New in 2022)

A five-year multi-visit visa is also available for the above countries, which allows the holder to stay in the UAE for up to 90 days in a row and up to 180 days per year.

In order to apply for this type of visa, you need to prove that you have USD 4,000 in your bank account (for at least six months prior to the visa application) and purchase UAE Health Insurance.

Citizens of India

What happens if my tourist Visa has expired?

If your 60-day tourist visa to the UAE has expired, you have two options:

• Driving in Abu Dhabi – Need To Know Information For Tourists
• Where is Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station? Location, Timings & Facilities
• Abu Dhabi Taxi Fares and Booking Procedures
• Leave the country before your 10-day grace period expires (ie, by day 69)
• Apply to Immigration and pay a fee to have your visit visa extended. It is currently understood that you are able to extend your 60-day visa by 30 days twice, giving you a maximum of 120 days in the UAE ( previously, you could keep renewing indefinitely by leaving the country and returning).

What is a Visa Run?

A Visa run is a common expression used for when you leave the country in order to re-enter and start a fresh visit visa immediately.

Most commonly, this is done on the UAE’s border with Oman as it is quite straightforward and inexpensive to cross by land, provided you have access to a car. We have a detailed guide on how the process works on our Dubai Travel Planner site . It is identical for Abu Dhabi, although there may be closer border crossing points to consider near Al Ain.

There is no need to do a visa run as visas can easily be renewed online, but it is still an option which helps combine costs with a trip to a neighbouring country.

Accidental overstays

It’s important to note if you leave the country during the first 60 days, your UAE Visa on Arrival will not renew upon re-entry. It’s a 60-day multi-entry Visa .  If you are travelling through Abu Dhabi, let’s say onward to Europe, then have a stopover in Abu Dhabi again, be very careful if that second stop sees you cross over from 60 days to 70 days.

Eg: You arrive in Abu Dhabi on 1 September, stay for a few days, and then fly on to Europe. You return to the UAE on 30 October.  You then spend two weeks in Abu Dhabi and fly out again on 12 November.

Even though you only stayed in the UAE for just over two weeks, your original 60-day visa was still valid on re-entry. You are considered to have overstayed your visit visa by 12 days as you did not leave the country, and it was not renewed during the 10-day grace period.

Road trip to Oman?

A good way to avoid this can be to include a trip to Oman with your Abu Dhabi trip!  Musandam is our favourite location for an overnight trip, although the closest crossing point from Abu Dhabi city is Al Ain; not only an amazing experience, but you can avoid any issues with overstaying your visa and receiving a fine by exiting the country between day 60 and day 69.

There are a few small costs involved, and depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for an e-visa in advance. Other than transportation, you have to pay an exit fee to the UAE, and a  tourist Visa entry fee to Oman, currently 5OR for a 10-day visit visa. 

Re-entering the UAE, there are no charges on the Omani or UAE side, just stamping of your passports.

If you are travelling in a hire car, you will need to check that your insurance covers Oman and obtain a ’no objection certificate (NOC)’.

UAE VISA (For DUBAI & ABU DHABI): Requirements & How to Apply

One of the highlights of last year for me was my short stop in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). I was there for two reasons: to visit one of my closest friends, who moved to Dubai a few years ago, and to take advantage of a stopover. I was coming from a longer trip around Morocco and Turkey, and my flight back to Manila (Philippines) was connecting at Dubai Airport, so I decided to just seize the opportunity and stay there for over a week.

UAE Visa is probably the easiest visa we got. It was expensive, but it was relatively effortless, especially given that we have a friend in Dubai, who served as a sponsor.

Yep, sponsor. If you’re applying for a UAE Visa, you need a sponsor. It can be a family member, a colleague, or a friend. This will make things a lot easier. If you don’t know anyone there, an airline, hotel, or travel agency can sponsor you.

In the beginning, we had a difficult time figuring out the process. There’s just so much info online and they somewhat say different things because they serve their own interest. For example, some UAE-based airlines also offer visa services but they require flight tickets booked with them. Dozens of hotels are also authorized to process visas, but many of them require that book rooms with them (for obvious reasons). In this post, I’ll try to summarize everything so you have all possible options.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Who needs a UAE Visa?

Since I am a Philippine passport-holder, I had to secure a visa first before entering UAE. Not everyone needs a visa, though.

• If you’re a citizen of any member-state of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), no visa is needed . Here are the six GCC members: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar*. I’m putting an asterisk on Qatar because although it is a member, its diplomatic ties with UAE and other members have been severed in a rift that began in June 2017.
• Visa-on-arrival is available free-of-charge for the citizens of the following countries : EUROPE: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, UK, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Finland, Spain, Monaco, Vatican, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Malta, Cyprus, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, ASIA: Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore OTHERS: United States, Australia, New Zealand

For the rest of us, a visa is required.

Note that this doesn’t get affixed to your passport. A regular 30-day tourist visa must be used within 60 days from the date of issuance.

TYPES OF UAE VISA

Travelers visiting the UAE for leisure has three visa types to choose from depending on your purpose and travel duration.

• Visit Visa , if you’re traveling to UAE to visit an immediate family member who is a resident of the UAE (sponsor). The family member must be earning more than AED 4000 or AED 3000 + accommodation. The sponsor should be the one to apply for you.
• Tourist Visa , if you’re visiting a distant relative or friend or if you don’t know anyone there. The regular single-entry visa can let you stay for up to 30 days, although a multiple-entry visa is also available. If you know someone in UAE, it would be faster and easier if they apply for you. But if you have no connections, you can get a visa via an airline, hotel, or travel agency. (More info about that below)
• Transit visa , if you’re visiting UAE for at least 8 hours but not longer than 4 days (including the arrival and departure days). This can also be pre-arranged. This visa can be used within 14 days from the issue date.

Here’s a quick summary of the validity, maximum number of days allowed, and costs per visa type. I’m also indicating a range of prices per type. Rates vary greatly, depending on where you apply.

None of these visas can be extended.

In June 2018, the UAE Government approved the waiving of fees for transit visas for 48 hours. However, I have no idea about details of this: until when it will be implemented or what requirements are needed. The announcement, however, states that transit visa may be extended for up to 96 hours for a fee of AED 50.

Important : In a memo released on June 2, 2017 , Dubai’s Immigration has ordered agencies to stop accepting applications for 90-day visit visas from Filipino and Pakistani citizens for the next 3 months. Not sure if this will be restored in the future but until further notice, this option is no longer available for travelers from the Philippines and Pakistan. Update (Oct 2018): This has been restored.

UAE VISA REQUIREMENTS

The following are the required documents when applying for a UAE visa. These are the basic requirements.

Your sponsor may add more. For example, if you book your visa via Etihad Airways, they will ask for Etihad flight tickets. If you book with a hotel, they can demand that you reserve a room with them. Travel agencies often don’t have these extra reqs, but as I scanned prices, I found theirs to be a bit more expensive. Some agencies ask for flight and reservations too, some don’t. The agency where we applied didn’t ask for these so we didn’t submit.

Anyway, here are the required documents when applying for a UAE (Dubai) visa:

• Clear scanned passport copy (the bio page and the last page). Must have at least 6 months validity.
• Scanned colored passport-size photo . 4.3 x 5.5cm. White background. At least 80% of your face must be visible.
• Accomplished application form . It is usually the sponsor (travel agency, host) who does this.

If you’re sponsored by someone in the UAE , they will also be asked for a copy of their Resident Visa and their Emirates ID (resident card).

If you’re a parent traveling with a minor (18 years old and below), you must also submit a copy of birth certificate of the minor

If applying for a transit visa , a hotel reservation and onward flight ticket are usually collected too.

Additional requirements for visit visa

Additional requirements if visiting immediate family:

• If sponsored by a wife or husband : marriage contract attested from Ministry of Foreign Affairs or UAE Embassy
• If you’re a minor getting sponsored by a parent in UAE , attested birth certificates
• If your relationship with sponsor cannot be proven from family names displayed on the sponsor’s and the invited relative’s passports: Relationship proof attested from the Embassy
• If your sponsor works for a private company : Attested work contract
• If your sponsor is a UAE government employee : a salary certificate

Optional Documents

The following documents are NOT required. These are often ignored, but the travel agency or sponsor may ask for in order to speed up processing of your visa.

• If you have traveled to UAE within the past year , a copy of the entry and exit stamps on your passport
• If you have traveled to the USA, UK, Schengen countries, Canada, Russia, Australia or New Zealand within the past 5 years, submit a copy of your visas.

WHERE TO SUBMIT YOUR UAE VISA APPLICATION

Once you have all the documents, it’s time to find a “sponsor”.

Like I said earlier, a sponsor can be a family member or a friend living in UAE. It will be much faster if they take care of the application. Just send them your papers. But if you don’t know anyone there, an airline, hotel, or travel agency in UAE can serve as your sponsor.

Most 3-star hotels (and up) are able to process UAE visas. So if you’re already eyeing a hotel, send them an email if they also offer visa services because there’s a big chance that they do.

You may also check their official website. For example, Jumeira Group — which owns and runs the Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel, Madinat Jumeirah, Jumeirah Living World Trade Centre Residence, Jumeirah Creekside Hotel — provides plenty of visa info on their website. UAE Travel Agencies

In our case, my friend in Dubai who took care of our application went to a travel agency and it went smoothly. We didn’t run into any problem. You can also avail of their services if you don’t know anyone. Here are the details of the agency that processed our application:

Hi Ann. To be honest, in our case, we didn’t present the original pink visa, just a printed out online copy. We didn’t run into any trouble. However, we also heard stories (other travelers) na hindi daw nga tinanggap kung hindi original. So my advice is to just get the original copy to be safe.

Hi Mia! The pink visa is the original copy of the visa. We’ve heard from other commenters that Immigration asks for this, but in our experience, we just presented a printed our copy of the visa emailed to us and they accepted it. So we’re not sure if it’s really a requirement. If you can secure a pink copy, that would be best.

Hi Mia. In my experience, they did not take a copy. They just looked at it and gave it back to me. Not sure about folding, but I think it’s okay.

You will still need a visa. Best if yung parents nya ung magpo-process kasi andun na sila.

But please make sure you also secure a DSWD clearance since you’re traveling with a minor without either parent.

Hi Po. Good evening. I have a questions po. This year lang Month of May pumunta kami ng Foreigner Boyfriend ko sa Hongkong, Thailand, at Singapore. And this coming October po pupunta po kami ng Dubai with his mom for 7 nights and 8 days. Tapos doon na po kami magkikita sa Dubai at wala po akong work kasi nag aaral po ako. Kumbaga ayoko na syang pumunta pa ng PHILIPPINES because malayo na kasi pag nag travel pa sya papuntang Philippines bali 48 hours na in one way, aside sa 15 hours from their home to dubai. Hi Jheyann, the validity of the visa is different from the duration of stay. The length of stay depends on what you’re applying for. The standard visa is good for a 30-day stay. A 90-day-stay visa is available now too, but I think you have to justify why you need to stay that long.

Hi my bf currently suffered from a serious car accident in abu dhabi, thank God he survived. But I think he is going through depression ever since the accident. He is not in good terms with this family and so he’s been badly asking me to visit him there in UAE. He works there with a single entry, unlimited years visa so leaving uae to have a vacation in the philippines or anywhere else outside uae wouldn’t be a good choice. Best thing is for me to visit him there so he offered to sponsor all my expenses just to get there. What worries me most is that I’m currently unemployed, I just worked as an online marketer but income wasnt good there. Does the uae embassy also asked for some kind of show money? And will they also asked about my work and income? I did have some travel experience outside the country, I was able to travel Japan alone before (which was sponsored by my ex bf) and last month I was able to get a 10yr tourist visa for USA with my parents (but this time sponsored by my parents). Will these visas help me get one for uae? So sorry for the long message, I just want to fill you in what I have and maybe you can suggest something to help get me a visa. Hi Chacha, I don’t think your income matters in the visa application. Your occupation will be displayed on your visa, but they usually don’t ask for proof.

However, even if you’re able to get a visa, you still have to go through PH Immigration, which is by far stricter. If you’re unemployed and your destination is Dubai, you’re likely to undergo secondary inspection because UAE is a “hotspot” destination for them. In this case, you will have to provide proof of your relationship with sponsor and proof of employment/financial capability of your sponsor.

400AED lang talaga yung binayaran ng friend mo sa travel agency? wala na hiningi na security deposit? at hindi ba hassle sa friend mo yung proseso? nahihiya din naman kasi ako mang-abala ng colleagues just to sponsor me. i am in contact din with 2 hotels sa dubai and both of them are asking for 5000aed security deposit. it’s refundable after 2 weeks leaving dubai, but still a lot lalu na per person yan. thanks!

PH Immigration is a lot more complicated, though, so it may be another story altogether.

I got a tourist visa(14days) for my friend from Philippines. I’m working here in UAE. Unfortunately they put Sales Exec for profession. She’s in marketing so her COE says marketing manager. I asked the agent here they told me it wont be a problem and they can’t do anything as the immigration here fills up the data. Did anyone have the same issue? We’re just worried about the Philippine Immigration. She’s a frequent traveler. Have valid hotel bookings , klook booked tours and a return ticket.

Hi, Will be visiting Dubai real soon. My friend is sponsoring us. I just want to ask. Dito po ba sa PH immigration, my friend already gave me scanned copies or her passport, emirates ID, work documents etc., kailangan pa ba ng letter of invite from the friend? or enough na yung mga binigay niya as supporting documents plus the visa of course.

Ideally, to be safe, mas okay if you have a letter of invitation. But in reality, madalas, they don’t look for this document. Pero if matapat ka sa strict na officer or if pagdudahan ka nila, they can ask for an invitation.

The UAE issues two types of transit visas: one for 48 hours, and another for 96 hours. Transit visas are sponsored by the UAE-based airlines and must be processed and approved before entering the UAE

If you are not one of the nationalities that are eligible for visa on arrival  or a  visa-free entry  to the UAE, then you need a transit visa.

Only the UAE based-airlines you are travelling through can arrange your transit visa prior to your journey. If your trip is through a travel agency, the agency can also help you get the visa, but all visas are routed through the airline. Airline agents can apply online for transit visas through one of the following means:

• the  eChannels  portal
• the UAEICP app for  Apple  and  Android
• online channels offered by the relevant General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in each emirate.

Transit visa is issued either for 48 hours or for 96 hours. Please note that once a 48 hours visa is issued, it cannot be extended to 96 hours.

Transit visas for 48 hours

Transit visas for 48 hours are issued free of charge to passengers transiting through the UAE’s airports. You need to apply for the visa in advance through a UAE-based airline. This visa is not extendable, nor renewable. The validity of the visa is 48 hours from entry into the UAE, and you must leave the UAE within 48 hours from arrival.

To get a transit visa, you must have:

• a passport or travel document with a minimum validity of three months
• a photo of self against a white background
• an onward ticket booking to a 3rd destination, other than the one you are coming from.

Transit visas for 96 hours

Transit visas for 96 hours are issued against a fee of AED 50 to passengers transiting through the UAE’s airports. You need to apply for the visa in advance through a UAE-based airline. This visa is not extendable, nor renewable. The validity of the visa is 96 hours from entry into the UAE, and you must leave the UAE within 96 hours from arrival.

No fees or additional amounts can be imposed by any federal, local or private entity. A departure fee of AED 30 is levied on each passenger passing through the UAE’s airports.

Am I eligible for a refund?

If you booked with Etihad Airways using a credit card, enter your booking reference below to check whether you’re eligible for a refund. Otherwise, call us or your travel agent for more information.     Your refund amount depends on your  fare type and whether you’ve flown any part of your journey. Fees and charges may apply.    A 24-hour cancellation policy applies to all direct bookings with Etihad Airways.

How to request a refund

You can request a refund up to two hours before your flight, otherwise a no-show fee will be applied.    If you’re eligible, find out how to request a refund below or in our modification guide .

Choosing Etihad Credit 

Etihad Credit is a great alternative to requesting a refund. We’ll simply convert the cost of your flight into credit which you can use to pay for flights or extras with Etihad Airways in the future.  

What happens if Etihad cancels or changes my flight?

In the unfortunate event we have to cancel or change your flight, we’ll email you to let you know what your options are next. You’ll also receive a notification in  Manage your booking and via the app. Make sure your email address is up to date at etihad.com/manage .  

Your flight will be rebooked if:

• Departure time is 30 minutes or more earlier
• Arrival is delayed by more than one hour
• You’ll miss a connecting flight due to changes
• You’re rebooked to a lower cabin due to an aircraft change

We’ll email you with options to:

• Accept the flight change
• View alternative flights
• Request a refund (available subject to conditions)

You can select a new flight if: 

• New flight times aren’t suitable
• You choose an alternative flight seven days before or after the original departure date
• You must rebook within 60 days of the flight change notification, otherwise, fare rules apply

When will I receive my refund?

Refunds will be credited to your original form of payment. If you paid by credit or debit card, you should receive your refund within 21 days. For all other payment types, refunds may take up to 45 business days to be processed.     If you haven’t received your refund in 45 business days, first contact your bank. If you don’t receive your refund after that, or the card you used to pay for your flight has expired, please  get in touch .

Is it possible to request an open ticket, rather than re-book my flight.

You can request Etihad Credit subject to the fare rules of your ticket. Etihad Credit can be used to pay for flights and extras – like seats and bags – with Etihad Airways.

What should I do if I haven’t received my refund after 45 days?

If you haven’t received your refund in 45 business days, first contact your bank. If you don’t receive your refund after that, please call us

How do I get a refund if I booked using Etihad Credit?

We’ll simply credit the amount back to your Etihad Credit account. The validity of your original voucher will apply.

No, refunds will be processed in the currency used when you booked your ticket.

Many airlines have 'stopover' programs that let travelers tour a city between connecting flights, and some will even pay for a hotel — here's how to book them

• Many people intentionally book flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city.
• Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food.
• These stopovers benefit travelers, airlines, and the carrier's home country by boosting tourism.

A special segment of adventurous travelers will purposely book itineraries with long connections in layover cities just to leave the airport and explore for a few hours or days between flights.

Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

It's basically a vacation within a vacation.

Although it sounds too good to be true, stopovers benefit everyone involved. Travelers get more choices and don't have to be confined to an airport, airlines gain customers who may have otherwise chosen a nonstop option on a competitor, and the carrier's home country sees a boost in tourism.

Plus, the cheap or complimentary accommodations typically come at a small cost to airlines, thanks to partnerships with local hotels or tour companies.

Not all stopover programs are structured with an emphasis on tourism, though, as some were created simply to offer conveniences during long layovers. Still, they are a way to secure a free hotel and explore an extra city.

Here are 22 global airline stopover programs, each lasting anywhere from hours to months.

Many carriers allow stopovers to be added to a regular cash booking, but some are only available via award tickets . This means the flight was paid for using points/miles or a combination of points/miles and cash.

Air Canada has a stopover option built into its Aeroplan loyalty program. It allows customers booking award flights to add a stop on international journeys and explore practically any city the airline flies to outside the US and Canada.

The add-on costs 5,000 Aeroplan points each way and can only be booked if the stop is at least 24 hours, capping out at 45 days.

Air France/KLM

Air France and Dutch carrier KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program offers a stopover of 24 hours or more in a connecting city on either carrier or their airline partners.

The option is free to add to award tickets, and passengers can stay up to a year in the stopover city.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers a free one-night hotel stay for transfer passengers with connection times lasting between six and 30 hours, though there are some time and route restrictions.

Breakfast and transportation are included for eligible travelers.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines' Panama stopover program allows customers to spend anywhere from 24 hours to seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City, on their outbound or return trip.

The option is free for the first stopover, but a second stopover can cost up to $250 plus taxes. Copa offers discounted hotels and tours that can be booked via its stopover website.

Emirates allows a stopover in Dubai with the option to add discounted tours or hotel bookings to the itinerary via its website.

The UAE carrier also has a " Dubai Connect " program that gives passengers with layovers between 6 and 26 hours, depending on the cabin, a complimentary hotel, transfers, meals, and any needed visa.

Dubai Connect only triggers if the customer takes the next available flight. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel.

Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines' transit program gives customers flying via Addis Ababa a free hotel, transit visa, and transfers during layovers lasting between eight and 24 hours.

The hotel on the airline's website is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, located inside the airport.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways offers a stopover in its Abu Dhabi hub, which comes with an undisclosed discount at select three-star hotels for up to two nights.

Two and four-night stays can be booked at more luxurious four and five-star hotels at a 40% discount. The minimum stay is 24 hours.

Although Etihad's website says it is temporarily unavailable, the airline used to allow eligible travelers to use a so-called Transit Connect Package that provided a free hotel near the airport for layovers lasting 10 to 24 hours. It is unclear when or if the program is returning.

Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways offers a stopover program in Fiji for those traveling to and from Australia, New Zealand, and other South Pacific nations.

Related stories

Hotels and activities like ziplining and beach resorts can be booked through the airline as part of the stopover package.

Finnair allows passengers to book 6, 12, or 24-hour layovers in Helsinki at no additional fare charge and outlines itinerary ideas and information on its website , like transportation, free walking tours, and restaurants.

Customers can book a hotel through the airline and earn Finnair Plus points.

Iberia customers can plan a stopover in Madrid to or from an international destination for one to six nights at no extra cost.

Discounts on hotels, excursions, and transfers in the Spanish capital are available through Iberia.

Icelandair offers a stopover option for one to seven days in its capital city of Reykjavik on transatlantic itineraries for no additional charge.

The airline offers itinerary help and assistance in booking excursions and tours. Hotels need to be booked separately.

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines considers itself one of the "most stopover -friendly" carriers in the world.

The stopovers, which trigger at 24 hours, are not limited to JAL's hubs in Tokyo but can be enjoyed in places like Osaka and Kyoto using the airline's multi-city booking tool.

Latam Airlines

Latam Airlines offers stopovers for between one and three days on flights that connect in São Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Manaus, Curitiba, and Belem. Only international itineraries that connect in São Paulo.

Hotels and amenities can be booked via Latam, but the stopover booking is free.

Oman Air offers customizable stopover packages to give travelers time to explore the country's capital, Muscat, and beyond. An additional fare charge may be applicable, though the airline does not fly to the US.

Packages and a-la-carte options include discounted hotels for up to three nights, as well as organized tours, meals, and transfers.

Australian flag carrier Qantas offers its stopovers in a similar manner to JAL in that multi-city bookings can be manipulated to add extra days between flights in layover cities, like Bangkok, Osaka, or San Francisco.

This comes at no extra cost on eligible Qantas fares and can be used on its Oneworld partner airlines.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways' stopover program allows passengers with a minimum layover of 12 hours and up to 24 hours to choose from a list of deeply discounted four and five-star hotels. Certain flight itineraries allow for up to four nights.

Nightly hotel rates start at $14 per person for 1 night at four-star standard hotels, with premium five-star beach hotels starting at $30 per person for one night.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Royal Jordanian Airlines' transit program gives economy and business-class travelers with at least eight and six-hour layovers, respectively, a free hotel room, meals, and transit, assuming certain fare conditions are met.

However, the connecting flight must be the earliest possible — meaning, similar to Emirates, passengers can't intentionally book a longer layover to be eligible for the complimentary perks.

Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines, or SWISS, has a multi-city stopover booking tool on its website that allows passengers to find itineraries with extra days in Switzerland.

The cost of hotels and other perks is on the customer, though.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines' stopover program is available via the multi-city tool, similar to other carriers, where travelers can add hotels, transfers, and activities. The stopover can last one to seven days.

Singapore also offers free transit tours to passengers with layover times between five and a half and 24 hours at Singapore's Changi Airport. It's first-come, first-serve and includes sightseeing around Singapore.

TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal allows customers to add a stopover in Lisbon or Porto between one and 10 days, offering discounts on hotels, food, and activities.

It also offers 25% off a domestic flight to a second Portuguese destination, like the Azores or Madeira islands, to take during the stopover.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines' stopover program gives economy travelers a one-night free hotel stay and business flyers a two-night free stay if the period between their connecting flights in Istanbul exceeds 20 hours.

Those traveling from the US in economy class can stay up to two nights in a four-star hotel, while those traveling in business can stay up to three nights in a five-star hotel.

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways to resume Airbus A380 service to Paris from November 1

Etihad currently operates the A380 to New York and London

Abu Dhabi: UAE’s flagship carrier, Etihad Airways, announced plans to resume its Airbus A380 services to Paris on Wednesday. From November 1, Etihad will begin flying the popular double-decker on the Abu Dhabi—Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

The French capital becomes the third major city, and Etihad will deploy one of its A380 aircraft, following London and New York.

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, said, “The introduction of the A380 on the Abu Dhabi – Paris route enriches both leisure and corporate travel. It underscores Etihad's commitment to facilitating business connections and travel and rich cultural landscape with the premium service Etihad is known for.”

Earlier this week, Etihad relaunched its A380 service to New York, United States.

Arriving in time for the busy summer travel season and the corporate travel market, the airline said one of Etihad’s two daily flights to the Big Apple will be serviced by the A380. At the same time, the other will be operated by a Boeing 787-9. The airline stopped its A380 services following the pandemic in 2020, grounding all ten super-jumbo aircraft in its fleet. A total of four of Etihad's A380s are now back in service.
