Many solar lights (even some of the best ones) are made almost entirely of plastic, but the Beau Jardin pathway lights feature partial stainless steel construction with glass shades, lending some added durability.

The Beau Jardin lights have a waterproof rating of IP65, which is the industry-recommended resistance rating for solar lighting that will be exposed to the weather. The light output is good at 10 lumens, and the rechargeable AA batteries (one in each lamp) can provide 6-8 hours of light when fully charged. The Beau Jardin light shades cast a very appealing light pattern on the ground, and the lamps themselves look nice.

The stakes have a metal shaft with a plastic spike at the end, and while they feel sturdy when properly placed in the ground, the two-piece design is questionable, and the plastic portion feels flimsy and requires care if pushed into harder soil. Furthermore, while there are a few metal finish options available, the color temperature of the light is limited to cool white.

You have to commit to buying a pack of 10, but considering the quality relative to their very affordable price, that’s not a bad thing. They’re a good option if you have a longer walkway or driveway you wish to illuminate, and if not, you’ve got a few spares on hand.

The Hampton Bay Jefferson solar lights feature a classic lantern design with a crackled glass shade that casts an interesting and attractive glow. The 10-lumen output is suitably bright for pathway lighting, although not the brightest on our list, and the 3,000K warm white color temperature is comfortable to the eye.

The Jefferson solar pathway lights are made from tough aluminum and thick acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic and have a water resistance rating of IPX4. That means they’re not tested for ingress of particular matter, such as dust, but can survive direct contact with water. They’re resistant to rain and even hail, so weather shouldn’t be a major concern. We’d still prefer to see an IP65 rating, though. Other than that (admittedly minor) quibble, there’s really not much to dislike about these.

Daniel Espada, an engineer, outdoor enthusiast, and founder of Geardventure , told us, “I like these solar lights because they are easy to install, reliable, and adaptable to different situations.” Along with being bright – the Aloftlight spotlights put out an impressive 800 lumens of light – they boast some very nice features you don’t usually find at this price. “They also have a motion sensor that can detect movement up to 26 feet away,” Espada adds. There are three different lighting modes, as well.

Just as impressive is their IP68 water resistance rating, which is the highest of any solar lights on our list. That means they can survive complete submersion in water, which should tell you how they will hold up in the rain. Their sturdy housing is made of thick ABS plastic, as well, so they’ll have no trouble holding up to snow, sleet, and even hail.

You might not see solar lights as something that requires smart home integration, but if you do, then Ring has you covered. This smart home brand is probably best known for its video doorbells and other security-related devices, but its Solar Path lights are a nice way to add some smart ambient lighting to your property.

The Ring Solar Pathlights connect to your home’s Wi-Fi network via a Ring Bridge (which costs around $50), allowing you to control and customize the lighting or change settings through your smartphone or an Alexa-powered Echo device, if you have one. For example, the “Dusk to Dawn” setting keeps the lamps dimly lit at night but will brighten them up when they sense motion. The Pathlights can put out up to 80 lumens of warm white light (you can adjust the brightness) and send you alerts when the motion sensors activate.

Note that these Solar Pathlights can’t interface directly with your home’s Wi-Fi or mobile devices. They require the Ring Bridge in order to sync up with your wireless network, which is an additional expense for solar lights that are already fairly pricey by themselves. For this reason, they’re probably the best motion-activated solar lights for people who already have (or plan to buy) other Ring smart home devices.

If you want a really bright solar light to illuminate a wide area (that is, more than just a walkway or your front steps), you want a floodlight, and the Tuffenough Solar Outdoor Light is about as bright as they come. This motion-activated floodlight packs 210 LED bulbs that put out 2,500 lumens, with three light panels that cast that output in a broad 270-degree arc.

The Tuffenough solar floodlight is motion-activated, as most home security floodlights are. The motion sensor has a maximum range of 26 feet, and there are a few different activation settings (just don’t expect the bells and whistles you’d find on a smart light like the Ring Solar Pathlight). It has an IP65 water resistance rating, so you can be almost certain it won’t succumb to inclement weather, and the internal 2,000 mAh battery is considerably larger than what you find in solar pathway lights or spotlights.

The Tuffenough outdoor light is a floodlight and must be wall-mounted. The mounting bracket is also non-adjustable, so thoughtful placement is still important. However, the solar panel and light heads are all adjustable, and the fact that it’s solar-powered allows for more flexible installation because there are no wires.

Energizer is an iconic battery maker, so it shouldn’t be a huge surprise that its Solar Pathway Lights rank high when it comes to daily (or nightly) longevity. These 15-lumen solar lamps put out more light than our other pathway light picks but offer great battery life and energy efficiency along with robust construction.

Each Energizer solar pathway light is powered by a single AA battery, which the solar panels recharge. As you probably guessed, the ones included here are Energizer batteries, and they’re better than the generic no-name AA batteries that most other pathway lights come with. Even without this, the Energizer solar pathway lights are still very energy-efficient, especially considering their output. Energizer claims these lights can run for eight to 12 hours, although actual output will depend on how many hours of peak sunlight the panels receive during the day.

The design of the Energizer solar lights is admittedly a bit plain compared to the Beau Jardin or Hamilton Bay pathway lights, both of which are cheaper, but they’re available in more colors. Brightech’s Ambience Pro string lights are low-wattage LEDs but successfully replicate the look and warm glow of old-school incandescent bulbs. Each strand comes with a solar panel, which you can install in the ground via a stake or attach to a railing or other surface with a sturdy clip. Two configurations are available: a 27-foot strand with 12 bulbs that are 20 inches apart or a longer 48-foot strand with 15 bulbs and 3 feet between each light.

The Brightech Ambience Pro solar string lights aren’t without some drawbacks. For starters, each single-watt bulb puts out about a single lumen of light, so these are more useful for creating a warm ambiance than for functional lighting. Furthermore, you can’t string multiple strands together, so you’re limited to the two available options. On the other hand, since they don’t require an AC outlet, you don’t necessarily need to string them together; you’ll just have to set up the solar panels for each strand if you plan to hang up more than one.

Things To Consider When Buying Outdoor Solar Lights

Lumens and Brightness Levels:  The output of most lights, including solar lights, is measured in lumens – the higher, the brighter. Most pathway solar lights put out around 10 to 15 lumens, which is enough to illuminate a walkway or set of steps. Some can put out more but allow you to adjust this to the level you want. Color temperature is another consideration. Daniel Espada of Geardventure explains, ”The color temperature is measured in Kelvin, which indicates how warm or cool the light appears. The lower the Kelvin, the warmer and more yellow the light. The higher the Kelvin, the cooler and more blue the light.” The brightness and color temperature you need depends on your preferences and what you plan to use solar lights for.

Battery life and Power Storage Capacity:  As with output, battery life and storage capacity vary greatly among different types of solar lights. Simpler pathway lights typically use an internal battery, such as an AA, that the solar panel recharges every day. These batteries can be replaced when they wear out (as even rechargeables do over time). More powerful lights, such as spotlights and floodlights, often use bigger lithium-ion batteries that can deliver the power needed for their increased output.

Kami Turky, the founder of Solar Energy Hackers , cautions buyers to temper their expectations regarding battery life. “One thing consumers must understand about solar lights – or any solar product, really – is that the advertised charge time isn't true, or at least, isn't what you think it is,” she says. “When sellers say that the solar lights can be fully charged within eight hours, they don't mean eight hours of sunlight, they mean eight peak sun hours, a measurement of solar irradiation, where one peak sun hour equals 1,000 watts per square meter (W/m²). The average U.S. home gets about four to five peak sun hours per day (4-5 kW/m²), so the lights won't last for 12 hours at night as advertised. Most of the time, they'll last about six hours, which is still good enough, in my opinion.”

Aside from materials, also look for the specific IP rating of any solar light you’re thinking of buying. Edelman adds, “If the product comes with an IP rating like IP65 or higher, it indicates good resistance to dust and water, essential for outdoor conditions.”

Motion Sensor and Lighting Modes: Many of the best solar lights include added features such as motion activation, which can be useful for conserving battery life if you don’t want the lights on all the time, as well as for home security applications. Some solar lights, especially ones with higher output, may offer different lighting settings, letting you customize the brightness to suit your needs or preferences.

Ideally, you should use a mix of outdoor lights around your property, including ground lights, accent lights just above eye level, and fixtures installed on the roof or above your driveway . For walkways, pathway lights on stakes are a popular choice. You can drive them directly into dirt and soil, so you can use them to highlight your outdoor pathways, or the edges of your lawn.

For decks, patios, and fencing, a set of small, wall-mounted fixtures are effective, and outdoor string lights always feel like a festive touch. These function similarly to indoor sconces without the need for interior wiring. Some have mounting mechanisms, while others require screws and hooks in your wall.

There are also motion sensor lights for increased security and decorative lights that accent gardens and landscaping. Motion- sensor lights are best for short-term use, lighting up when you are nearby for easy entrance at your door or keeping away potential burglars. Decorative lights often come with special designs or colored bulbs, more for an accents than brightness.

Weather Resistance

Because they are designed for outdoor use, most solar-powered lights offer decent water and weather resistance. The level of resistance varies from light to light; pay close attention to each model's weather resistance rating.

Manufacturers indicate their lights' weather resistance based on the Ingress Protection (IP) scale, which measures their ability withstand exposure to both dust and water. An IP rating rating features two numbers: The first rates dust resistance on a scale of 1-6; the second rates water resistance from 1-7. For a long-lasting light you can leave out all year, look for a rating of IP65 or higher.

Outdoor lighting plays a big role in setting the mood of your space, so you buy try the kind of atmosphere you’re trying to create, and buy the lights that will help you bring that idea to life. It's a personal choice, so there's no right answer. If you're looking to cultivate a more modern look, cool white lights with a minimalist design work well. More traditional fixtures with warm lights may be a more complementary fit a rustic home.

How We Selected The Best Solar-Powered Outdoor Lights

We cast a wide net to find a variety of solar-powered outdoor lights to suit different settings and needs, including lights for pathways, decorative purposes, security, and more. We payed close attention to weather resistance specs, the number of bulbs, bulb brightness, design, and special features, plus the usability of the lights’ apps. We also sought to cover options based on price, number of lights per purchase, and their long-term durability and value.

Gigalumi Solar Pathway Lights (Set of 12)

It's easy to lodge these mini integrated LED lanterns stakes deep into the ground, making them an ideal choice for illuminating everything from driveways to garden beds and pool areas.

The classic pattern has a clean look that fits in with both modern and rustic yards, without drawing too much focus or fading entirely into the background. The four-panel design also ensures even lighting in each direction, plus they offer a high weather-resistant rating and an estimated average battery life of about 8 hours.

Aootek Solar Motion Sensor Lights

For function above all else, these solar-powered outdoor lights get the job done without a hitch. They offer three modes of operation: always-on, motion-sensor, and a "smart brightness" mode that stays on at a dim setting and gets brighter when someone walks by. Given their versatility, they could work well as pathway lights, installed over a driveway, or to light up an entryway.

The wide-angle, wall-mounted design gives the lights a large detection range, picking up movement from 26 feet away within an angle of 120 degrees. They also have a crucial IP65 weather-resistance rating.

Like many motion sensor lights, our biggest gripe with these lights is that you can't adjust the sensitivity of the motion sensor. Ultimately, though, these are perfect if safety and security are your top priorities.

Brightech Solar-Powered Edison Bulb Lights

With a vintage Edison bulb design, these string lights deliver form and function. Each string spreads 12 LED bulbs over 27 feet of weatherproof wire. They feature an on-off button, so you can power them down when you’re ready to turn in for the night.

The LED bulbs are said to last for 20,000 hours and the solar panel is rated at about 1,000 charges. (In other words, this set of lights should last about 2.5 years.) We tried and tested a wide range solar lights for every home, so you don't have to. During our tests, we left them to charge outside in various spots in the yard before placing each light in the freezer for four hours before dusk. We returned them to the yard to monitor which ones functioned as usual and how long they stayed illuminated. What's more, we put them to the test for water resistance, and placed each of the lights in appropriate positions to monitor how they coped with various weather conditions.

Want to make your patio look like an outdoor bistro or Italian cafe? Brightech’s solar-powered string lights will do the trick. This string of LED bulbs are designed to look like retro Edison-style lights, which will cast a warm, gentle glow on your deck in the evening. The bulbs are made of shatterproof plastic, and are designed to withstand winds up to 50 miles per hour, as well as rain, snow, and temperatures up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. When put to the test, these lights delivered in every respect here; enduring two severe rainstorms, one tropical storm, heavy rainfall in a shower and four hours in the freezer, with no sign of damage. 

The 12 Brightech Ambience Pro lights are connected on a 27-foot cord, with 20 inches between each light. (The company also sells a 48-foot version with 15 bulbs, with three feet between each). At the end is a solar panel, which can be clipped to a railing or some other platform, or staked into the ground. There’s no ambient light sensor, but the lights last for up to six hours on a full charge. The lights also come with a 3-year warranty.

2. Aogist Solar Ground Lights

These small flat disks lie flush with the ground, and provide accent lighting for garden beds and walkways. Each Aogist Solar Ground Light  (they come eight to a pack) has a small 600 mAh battery that can provide illumination for up to eight hours. When we tested these solar lights, one didn't work straight out of the box, which seems like an issue with quality control, but the other seven functioned effectively.

These solar ground lights have a nice, stainless steel cap on top, which gives them a premium appearance, although the plastic spike on the underside admittedly feels flimsy and can break easily. In terms of setup, all you need to do is turn on the light and insert it into the ground, and it will do the rest — we found installation couldn't be easier. 

The effective built-in sensor will detect when it gets dark out, and automatically turn the light on; when it gets brighter, the light will turn itself off. With an IP65 rating, we found they were impervious to hot, humid, wet, windy and freezing weather. However, the company recommends replacing the battery after a year or two, as its capacity to hold a charge degrades over time.

3. AMIR Upgraded Solar String Lights

The AMIR string lights are so Pinterest. Add these solar-powered string lights to your pergola, fence, or wall, and you’ve got the makings of a cozy outdoor evening set. Amir’s solar-powered string lights are 72 feet long, with 200 LEDS spaced 3.5 inches apart. The lights are held together by thin copper wire, which virtually disappears, so all you see are the twinkling lights. The copper wire can also be bent to conform to various shapes, too.

AMIR’s string lights can be set to eight modes, including fireflies flashing, waves, fading, chasing/flashing, fading slowly, twinkle/ flashing and steady on. You can also set them to turn automatically at dusk, and off at sunup. These lights are available in warm white, cool white, and blue, and also comes in shorter 33-foot/100 LED lengths. On test, we found they were both easy to install and durable, lasting well despite the rain and freezing temperatures. However, they do need a good amount of sun to perform.

Best smart solar lights

4. Ring Solar Pathlight

The Ring Solar Pathlight is the best solar light for anyone who has other Ring products, such as the Ring Video Doorbell. These lights provide downward-facing illumination for your walkway, have adjustable brightness settings, work with Alexa , and can send you notifications when they detect movement.

We really liked their motion sensors, which we could set to turn on only when they detect a person’s presence, helping to preserve the Pathlights' battery life. Additionally, you can connect them with other Ring devices, so that if the Pathlights sense something, your Ring camera or video doorbell can start recording automatically. 

However, at $35 a piece, the Solar Pathlights aren’t cheap, and you’ll also need the Ring Bridge ($50, sold separately) to connect them to your home Wi-Fi network.

5. Aootek Solar Outdoor Flood Lights

These lights from Aootek have motion sensors built in to turn on its array of 128 LEDs when it senses movement. The motion sensor can detect people or objects up to 26 feet away in a 120-degree arc, and during testing, we found it caught everything that crossed its path. The company recommends you install the lights at least 5.5 feet high.

These floodlights, which have an effective arc of 270 degrees, can be set to one of three modes: Security, where the motion sensor activates the light for 15 seconds; On, where the lights turn on at dusk; and Smart Brightness, where the lights turn on a low setting at dusk, and brighten when they detect movement. These lights have a 2200 mAh rechargeable battery, and we found they stayed on for longer than similar models on the market. These lights are very durable too, holding up to rain and freezing temperatures with no detriment.

6. JACKYLED Solar Step Lights

If you want solar step lights specifically for your deck or fence, then our winning step lights are worth a look-in. They’re available in packs of two, four, eight and 16 and there’s six colorways to choose from. Each light features three LED beads and needs 6-8 hours to fully charge, providing 8-10 hours of illumination. When we tested them, we found that they over delivered, staying illuminated for nearly 12 hours at a time, even after a rainy, cloudy day. 

They’re not the brightest, but they sufficiently lit our steps, plus they held up fine in heavy rain and high winds. They were a little sluggish after being subjected to freezing temperatures though. We found them easy to install with a drill and at less than $40 to illuminate between 4 and 8 steps, they're a bargain compared to many of the other options.

7. LITOM 12 LEDs Solar Landscape Spotlights

If you’re looking for the best solar spotlights with high brightness, LITOM’s solar landscape spotlights will impress with its 600 lumens and 12 LED arrays. The solar panels for these spotlights are built into the head of the light itself, which makes for a somewhat more compact unit. However, this design can be a little limiting when you need to adjust the light and the solar panel for the optimal position. 

The LITOM Solar Landscape spotlight is available in one of several varieties: Warm White (3000K), Cold White (6500K), and multicolored. The company also sells a version that lets you switch between cold and warm white. Each light has an 18,650 mAh rechargeable battery built in. This provides up to 12 hours of illumination in low light mode and up to 6 hours in high light mode. The lights will also automatically turn on at dusk, and off at dawn. They can be mounted either in the ground using the included stakes, or on a wall with the included screws. These lights sailed through our durability and weather-resistant tests, and they're easy to install with thick stakes. Our only real qualm is that they may be too bright for some.

8. Ring Solar Step Light

The best solar lights are not just about making your yard look cool; they also serve a safety function, too. Ring’s Solar Step Light helps brighten stairs leading up to your house or deck, making sure that you and your guests have a sure footing. These lights are small — just 4 x 3.4 inches — but provide 50 lumens each, making them more than bright enough to see each step. 

What sets these step lights apart, is that each Ring Solar Step Light has a motion sensor built in, which you can use for a variety of purposes: When they detect movement, they can turn on or brighten the lights, and, if they’re connected to Ring’s other products, can trigger other lights to activate, or security cameras or video doorbells to start recording. On test, the motion sensor wasn't overly sensitive, but it was reliable, switching on whenever we approached the step. In terms of durability, these step lights were admittedly sluggish to switch on after sitting in freezing temperatures, although they were fine in the rain. We also noticed that they needed a lot of direct sunlight to fully charge, so they struggled on overcast days. But, if you want the latest tech in your step lights, these are the ones to get.

9. Techko Solar Lanterns

If you’re after the best solar lantern, these Techko solar lanterns will add style to your backyard,  front porch or even indoors. In addition, these are motorized with a flickering LED-powered candle flame, which creates the likeness of a real candle. 

The Techko solar lanterns are easy to install, and can stay brightly illuminated for an impressive 12 hours. Despite its medium size, these are surprisingly light to hang on  a shepherd’s hook, or placed on a window sill or path. We noticed that the level of brightness depends on the amount of daylight it gets to charge, so be sure to place it in a well-lit area either outdoors or indoors. In any case, its impressive, orange, warm glow allows sufficient light to brighten the porch or walkways 

The only minor downsides are that it would be handy to have a timer or remote control. Also, the operating switch is underneath a rubber casing, which can be tricky to slide over. But these can be overlooked by the lantern's lasting results.  

These lights are $39 apiece, which is a bargain considering their impressive bright light output. 

How we test the best solar lights

We tested all of these lights over the course of a month at a coastal home in New England. To keep things consistent, we first unboxed all of them and left them outside to charge in various spots around the yard — in doing this, they would all receive the same amount of sunlight at the same angles. After a week, we placed each light in the freezer for four hours before dusk and then returned them to the yard to monitor which ones functioned as usual  and how long they stayed illuminated. We also tested water resistance, rinsing each under a shower head for two minutes. 

Following the initial tests, we installed each of the lights in appropriate positions to monitor how they stood up to various weather conditions. Over 14 days, each solar light was subjected to a tropical storm, hot and humid days, overcast days and rainy days. We monitored how well they stayed in place throughout. 

How to choose the best solar lights

Wondering which solar lights should I buy ? Before you pick your favorites, take a stroll around your property at night and consider which areas you want lighting up. Then, think about what solar light type would be most suitable. You might want to brighten up your driveway or the side doors, or perhaps the path itself. Think about how many lights you are going to need and how bright they will have to be to achieve what you want. If you’re not 100 percent sure, then adjustable power solar lights might be best. Take into account how much sunlight that area gets too. If it’s limited, you will need a separate solar panel which can be better placed. (Check out our 7 tips for improving the performance of your solar panels .)

If you want to improve the aesthetics of your deck or patio, then string lights or Edison bulbs are worth considering. These don’t provide intense lighting, but it’s enough for the background and adds a soft glow. However, if you’re buying solar lights so you can better see the steps, you need ones which are bright and fit for purpose — solar step lights are available for this very reason.  

Ease of installation and battery life are important aspects to take into account, especially if you want the lights to last through the night. If battery life is your priority, you might want to consider a solar light with motion sensors — these will provide light only when you need it and ultimately save on power.

Don’t forget about what the solar lights will look like during the daytime as well. You don’t want them to look too cluttered or obtrusive. Some come with stainless steel casing to give a more premium appeal, while others have glass lampshades. Some can also be concealed easily as well, but make sure they’re not a tripping hazard. Path Lights: Solar path lights are designed to light up a path. These more often look like stakes which are inserted in the ground and the solar panel can usually be found directly on top. Bear in mind, if you choose this design, your pathway will need ample sunlight in the day; otherwise, opt for path lights which come with a separate solar panel.

String Lights: String lights feature a long cable which connects multiple bulbs — these can be dainty such as fairy lights or full-size bulbs. String lights look best when draped around the desired area, which can be anywhere from the patio to the flowerbeds. They’re designed for aesthetic effect rather than practicality and so won’t shed vast amounts of light.

Flood Lights: These solar lights are bright and intense, flooding light on your chosen area. They are usually mounted high up on a wall for maximum coverage. They’re great if you want full visibility for added security.

Spot Lights: These produce a narrow beam which can be angled to light up a specific point. They are designed to highlight areas in the backyard and are a great option if you don’t want to fill it with lights. Like path lights, these are usually designed with stakes to hold them in the ground, but they appear much more prominent.

Wall Lights: As the name suggests, solar wall lights are installed on the external walls or fence of your property and provide light immediately around it. These are great for added guidance and security at night. 

Step Lights: Solar step lights are a must-have if you struggle with steps around your property at night. These are installed alongside the wall and light up the steps better than a singular light source would. 

It should go without saying, but be prepared for your solar lights to struggle in the winter months or if you live in a particularly cloudy climate. The more sun they get, the longer they will last — ideal if you live somewhere like Phoenix, but not so much if you live in Seattle. The same goes for if you plan to place them in a particularly shaded location; they may not give you the performance you’re hoping for. 

Don’t be seduced by the online images before you buy. These can make the bulbs look brighter and bigger than they actually are so look over the specs for accurate information. Be sure to check how many bulbs you actually get and the length of any cable, if you need it to cover a specific area. 

Think about what tone of lighting you want in the garden as well. Most solar lights use LED bulbs which project a white light. Some may find this too harsh, especially if it’s lighting where you plan to entertain guests! If you want a warm or soft tone, invest in solar lights with tinted covers.  

If you’re about to throw away your current lights, before doing so check they really are broken. If you don’t have much sunny weather, they may be struggling to charge. Bring them indoors and leave them under your regular lights. This will actually charge them! Some also come with a USB charger which you can use.

How many hours of sunlight do solar lights need?

Generally, eight-10 hours of direct sunlight per day, will produce around 15 hours of illumination. But this will depend on location, type of light and exposure it gets. It's best to place your lights in an area that isn't shaded by trees, walls or even certain roofs, as these can obstruct the amount of light the solar panels receive. 

And while solar lights do still work on dark, cloudy days, the charge probably won't last as long.

The solar string lights are meant to be durable with their shatterproof material and Brightech's WeatherTite technology. While no official waterproof rating is given, this technology is designed to help the lights handle 50 mile-per-hour winds along with rain and snow.

They're also resistant to temperatures as hot as 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The bulbs are made of plastic, but one tester said they are "clear, pretty, and don't seem cheap."

When we tested the lights with water and a dropped golf ball, the lights showed no damage. The removable solar panel did move, but it lacked visible evidence of damage. The lights also still worked after stowing them in the freezer, making testers confident that these lights can withstand winter conditions.

We found the lights give off a soft, clear, pleasing light that makes them ideal for decorating a patio . The design is sleek and simple and quite similar to non-solar string lights.

However, the strands of lights can't be connected to one another since each needs its own solar panel to charge. You can hang up multiple strings next to each other to give the appearance of them being connected, though.

The Linkind StarRay Solar Spotlights come with an IP67 rating, meaning it's waterproof and will even keep dust particles out. Its 90 degree beam angle creates a more focused spotlight, and the spotlight head rotates 90 degrees vertically and 180 degrees horizontally, giving you more control over what the light shines on.

The lights have two modes. The first is a non-motion-sensing, lower brightness (about half power) that switches to a brighter light for 10 seconds when motion is detected. Once motion stops, the light dims itself.

The second mode keeps the light off when there's no motion then switches to a bright light for 25 seconds when motion is detected. We didn't notice a big difference between dim light and bright light modes, however.

Setup involves assembling three pieces, including screwing the light into the base. Once assembled, we found the light to be simple and streamlined. However, it did remind us of a pair of binoculars, which we didn't love. The lights are sturdy though and are a good option for a security light or for illuminating sidewalks.

We appreciated that the light and the solar panel are located on one unit—the solar panel is less obvious. The light stood up quite well to our water and golf ball tests but flashed three times before turning off after we placed it in the freezer.

With this in mind, we'd recommend bringing these lights indoors in winter if your location experiences freezing temperatures.

Made with glass, they have a cracked look for a stylish appearance. Some may not find this appealing, as it looks a bit like the glass is broken. When the lights are on, the cracked glass lends a sparkling quality to the light.

Though they're decorative and made with glass, we found that they stood up well to our water and golf ball impact tests. Plus, they still worked after a stint in the freezer, assuring us that they'll be fine in cold winter climates.

Its IP65 rating means it is a water resistant solar light option. We observed no damage to either the light or the solar panel when we subjected them to water and golf ball tests. The lights are meant to sit flush with the ground, though you may notice the silver rim around the light if you place them in the grass. These are rated as IP65, or deemed water resistant to splashes.

We tested these lights by dropping a golf ball onto them and getting them wet. They held up well, although the light wouldn't stay on as long after we stored it in the freezer for a bit, so you may want to bring these inside during winter.

These lights provide a nice ambient look, but you may need to purchase more than four to provide enough lighting for a longer path or sidewalk. There are also sets of eight and 12 available, giving you some options to choose from.

You'll just need to assemble three pieces for these lights, including a base, and testers said it was easy and quick to get the lights up and running.

We chose the AloftSun Solar Motion Sensor Outdoor Lights as the overall best outdoor solar lights for their durability, water resistance, and motion-sensing capabilities. If you're looking for a set of string lights, testers loved the Brightech Ambience Pro Solar Powered Outdoor String Lights , because they held up to water and freezing temperatures. And, while the bulbs are made of plastic, testers said they were clear and didn't look inexpensive.

Our team of experts at our testing lab in Des Moines, Iowa, put 27 outdoor solar lights to the test. We assembled them, sprinkled them with water, dropped a golf ball on them (from 6 feet away on the light and from 4 feet on the solar panel), and even stashed them in the freezer for an hour to see how well they held up to cold temperatures. We also timed how long the lights stayed on from dusk to dawn.

We carefully evaluated each light on its setup process, features, overall design, brightness, durability, and overall value. We ranked each light in each of these categories on a scale of one to five and used these insights to compile this list of the best outdoor solar lights.

When choosing the best outdoor solar lights for your space, consider your goals for the lights. Do you want something that lights up brightly only when motion is detected? Or do you prefer ambient lighting that provides a soft, warm glow?

There are a few different types of solar lights, and they all vary in how they're installed. For example, pathway lights, like the Hampton Bay LED Warm White Landscape Path Lights , are designed with stakes that you can stick into the dirt next to your driveway or sidewalk.

There are also solar lights that can be mounted up high on a wooden fence or deck, like the Home Zone Solar Wall Lanterns, 2-PackHome Zone Solar Wall Lanterns . If you're looking for something more decorative, you can find string lights and Mason jar lanterns powered by solar energy, such as the Brightech Ambience Pro Solar Powered Outdoor String Lights.

Others use solar lighting as a portable lighting option. Jameson says, "A lot of people who enjoy camping outdoors typically opt for solar-powered lanterns and bulbs as they are portable and self-sustaining for their power."

The best outdoor solar lights have a battery that can eventually be replaced if it stops working. "Technically, solar lights require rechargeable batteries to act as storage for the electrical energy collected from the sun," Jameson says.

Rechargeable batteries don't last forever, so there's a good chance you might need to replace them at some point. Many of the solar lights on this list use rechargeable AA or AAA batteries, which are easily available for purchase online. Since the batteries can simply be swapped out down the line, you won't need to replace the entire light fixture.

Solar Panel Location

Some of the solar lights on this list have small solar panels on each individual light, while others have a single external solar panel that powers the entire set of lights. You might prefer the latter if you want to use solar lights under a porch or covered patio; you'll be able to give the solar panel direct sunlight while keeping the lights where you want them.

We also found that lights with larger solar panels can sometimes have a less aesthetically pleasing look, so make sure you feel good about the size and location of the panel before purchasing.

Water Protection

Most of the solar lights on this list are water-resistant, like the AloftSun Motion Sensor Solar Landscape Spotlights , which means they repel water to some extent. (This is different from waterproof, which means a product doesn't allow any water to pass through.)

These lights will be fine in normal rain and snow showers, but you may want to bring them inside during heavy downpours combined with wind. You'll often see the water protection listed as an IP rating, an international standard that looks like "IP45."

The first number indicates how well the item is protected against solid objects like dust, and the second number indicates how well it's protected against liquids. The former ranges from zero to six and the latter ranges from zero to eight. The higher the number, the more protected it is.

Special Feautures

The best solar lights have special features like on/off switches, timers, or motion sensors. Some solar lights, like the Brightown Outdoor Solar String Lights , even have different light settings like a slow fade or twinkle.

4 Aogist Solar Ground Lights

The 4 Aogist Solar Ground Lights are easy to assemble, provided adequate brightness, and still performed properly after the water and freezer test. However, one of the spokes fell off after the golf ball test. It has a basic design, and for the price, eight lights for under $40 is an affordable option.

6 Pro Series VI Solar Path Light

The 6 Pro Series VI Solar Path Lights offers an elegant look to light your pathway. After the light and water test, the lights still worked. However, because of the price, we didn't feel that the performance or design justified the high price tag.

Ring Solar Pathlight

The Ring Solar Pathlights provided incredibly bright light, and the system as a whole was quite durable. However, a Ring Bridge and a smartphone app are required to connect it to Alexa. We weren't able to get the app working properly during testing, which is why we didn't include it on our list of the best outdoor solar lights. If you have the time and patience to devote to setup—and you already own other Ring accessories—this could still be a great fit for your home.

Will solar lights still work in indirect sunlight?

Outdoor lights work best when they have access to direct sunlight to charge for multiple hours during the day, which is how the manufacturers calculate battery life and runtime.

The best outdoor solar lights will work on cloudy days or in areas with indirect light, but you might notice that they aren't quite as bright or long-lasting. "It is a fact that energy storage is much better if it's under direct sunlight, but solar lights can still work with rain or even snow," Jameson says.

Do solar lights work in every part of the country?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy , solar lights work well in most parts of the United States. As long as the solar panels have access to enough sunlight, the lights will work well.

Pay attention to how much sunlight your yard gets during the day, and use that to manage your expectations for how bright the lights will be and how long they'll last into the evening.

You'll also want to pay attention to the manufacturer's guidelines for water exposure and use in freezing temperatures; you may need to bring the lights inside during inclement weather for protection.

Are solar lights eco-friendly?

In addition to giving you a sense of security and better visibility come nighttime, solar lights use renewable energy and don't create emissions that harm the planet. "Given that solar lights do not require electricity and are not connected to the power grid, it is very sustainable and is even a cost-effective way of lighting your home without bringing up the electricity bill," Jameson says.

Good outdoor lighting dramatically extends the hours you can enjoy your yard. Plus it can make things safer by highlighting paths, or you can use it to showcase standout features, like a koi pond or slate patio. And of course, the beauty of solar lighting is that there’s no need for wiring or an outdoor outlet. 

There are more varieties available than ever, including landscape, deck, and string lighting. But before you grab a bulk pack of lights at the home center, you should be aware that our tests found crucial differences between brands and models.

How Do Solar Outdoor Lights Work?

All solar outdoor lights draw power from the sun during daylight hours and store that power in a battery, or batteries, housed inside the lights. When the sun sets, the lights draw that stored power to produce light. Some models come on automatically at dusk, and some can or must be turned on manually. 

Unlike with conventional bulbs (including smart lightbulbs ), lumens don’t quite capture the level of brightness produced by a fixture. That’s because the apparent brightness of the light created is impacted by how the light is projected and reflected, as well as its color temperature. So refer to our ratings for insights on light color and settings, as well as the bulb type and number of LEDs per fixture, all of which can give you a sense of the color, brightness, and intensity. 

There’s no hard and fast rule to how many hours these products will provide light, but our experts observed that almost any option will last longer than the time it spends charging in the sun—so on a long summer day, you could theoretically have ample light from dusk to dawn, without the need to recharge.

However, it’s worth noting that battery size, the size of the array, and total light output all have an effect on how long that light will last. So, for instance, with all factors being equal, a dimmer light will last longer than a brighter light. "Light duration is hard to explain because it involves a balance," says Bernie Dietrich, CR’s senior tester who evaluated outdoor solar lighting.

Direct sunlight isn’t always a must for solar lights to work, but it certainly helps. In our tests, solar lights were able to generate light even after charging on overcast days, but a lack of sun certainly impacted battery life. If you’re concerned about a lack of sunlight, look for outdoor lights that can be charged with a USB cord, so you can top off the battery, even on the dreariest days. Also consider models with an on/off switch. That way you can turn off the lights until you need them, and increase the battery’s charge in the process. 

As for how long solar lights should last, we’re currently in the process of testing for that, so check back for an end-of-summer update on their longevity. Generally speaking, many battery-powered devices fare best when stored around room temperature. This would mean storing them indoors during cold weather—inconvenient, but at least you’ll also avoid hitting them with a shovel, plow, or snow blower when they’re safely packed away.

Types of Solar Outdoor Lights

Outdoor solar lights are categorized by what they’re used for. Here are the three main kinds: Solar landscape lights: Also called spot lights, path lights, or walkway lights, these models are typically installed in loose dirt with an included plastic stake. Spot-light varieties are usually designed to cast all of their light in a single area, much like a spotlight in a theater. Path or walkway varieties typically disperse their light evenly in a circle around the fixture, rather than targeting that light into a single spot as a spot light does. These lights are almost always sold in packs and are generally designed to illuminate a path or walkway, light up garden beds, or shine around the perimeter of a patio. 

Solar deck lights: Solar deck lights come in two common varieties. The first is designed to be installed on stair risers, casting light to illuminate the step below, so people won’t trip. The second variety, often called post-cap lights, are designed to mount onto the tops of posts frequently used in deck handrails and railings. These are designed to illuminate a wider area around the post, much like a pathway light. 

Solar string lights: Solar string lights are the solar-powered version of popular plug-in string lights, except you don’t need an outdoor outlet to use them. Wrapped on a pergola or arbor, they typically let you see clearly enough to top off a drink or avoid tripping on steps. Length of the string, number of bulbs, and the spacing between bulbs vary, as does the color profile of the light they generate, but most mount via plastic clips, which snap onto exposed nails, screws, or hooks on an outdoor structure, or even thin branches on a tree.

How CR Tests Solar Outdoor Lights

In our Yonkers, N.Y., facility, we mounted samples of each light to a mobile cart which we parked outdoors for roughly five hours every day. We tested on both sunny and cloudy days. 

Next, our pros brought each light back indoors. We noted when the lights went out, and scored them on how long they were able to stay on. The total times differed from day to day, depending upon sun, cloud, and rain conditions, but the best models always outperformed the worst, whether it was powered during the day with a lot of sun or very little. For scoring, we used the two brightest days from our testing. 

Next, we sized up ease of use, evaluating, for instance, how easy each light was to mount and adjust. We also noted which models had certain key features—like a switch to turn lights on and off, or to charge them with a separate power cord if the sun wasn’t out.

When you need to add lighting to your driveway, pathway, front door, or other outdoor space, solar pathway lights are an eco-friendly and affordable alternative to wired lighting. Instead of needing electricity, the bulbs are powered by solar energy , sunlight absorbed through the attached solar panels.

Although installing solar pathway lights may be as simple as pushing in a plastic stake, some prep work may be required, advises Matt Kunkle , an exterior lighting merchant for The Home Depot, whom we consulted for this story. “Before installing solar pathway lights, be sure to edge your walkway if you are planning for pathway lights, or trim back foliage in other areas where you may be planning to add solar landscape lighting,” he advises.

We've tested 62 different outdoor lighting options in  The Lab  and in our own yards across the country, including spotlights, solar pathway lights, motion detectors, mounted lights, and string lights . We tested each light's durability : In the lab, we sprinkled them with water to simulate rain, dropped a golf ball to simulate hail, and froze them for an hour to simulate freezing conditions. At home, we reported on their appearance and performance after different weather conditions.

Aside from making sure the light's weather resistance held up to the manufacturer's claim, we also tested the brightness of each light (solar pathway lights generally range between 10 to 20 lumens per light), and recorded how long they stayed lit overnight. We also evaluated their setup, features, design, and value . The Rayolon Solar Ground Lights are a modern, minimally designed set that can line a pathway, driveway, or pool deck . While testing these lights, they provided a warm white light, with eight LED bulbs in each of the 12 units. However, they were not bright enough to read under independently, so you would want to line them up next to each other for enough light to illuminate a path.

We found that they held up during our water and golf ball tests. Just note that they did not stand up well to being frozen (they wouldn't stay lit for long), so you may want to store them if your area experiences a frigid winter.

We do want to point out a few other small issues to keep in mind: To ensure they reach their maximum brightness, allow three days of charging before installing them in the ground. When installing each light, dig a shallow hole for the stake to prevent breakage. Also, since they are small and low to the ground, avoid stepping on them once installed. Dirt and debris can easily cover them, preventing the solar panels from charging—check on them occasionally, and clean the solar panels if they become covered. Despite these few drawbacks, we think these are a great low-profile choice.

However, we felt that the stakes were too flimsy to be put into the ground easily, and we were concerned that they would fall apart altogether and need to be replaced. We also felt that the light wasn't as bright as we had hoped. Again, if you don't need to put them in a high-traffic area that needs a lot of lighting and you place them carefully, they would be a good decorative option.

How We Tested the Solar Pathway Lights

Over the last few years, we've tested 62 different types of outdoor lighting, including mounted, pathway, string lights, and spotlights, either in our lab, or in our homes across the country. To compile this list, we included the best solar pathway lights we tested and rounded out the list with a few highly-rated options that we researched based on what we learned through testing. All of the pathway lights that were tested were evaluated on ease of assembly and installation , features , design , and overall value . 

For the path lights we tested in our lab, we started by assembling and charging them according to the time specified in the instructions. We ran through all of the light’s features in a dark room, including any motion sensors , on/off switches, and light settings, and took note of how easy they were to use . To test the brightness , we attempted to read a book under the light. Next, we tested the durability by sprinkling water on them with a watering can (to simulate rain), dropping a golf ball from 6 feet onto the fixture, and 4 feet onto the solar panel (to simulate hail), and froze them for an hour. After those tests, we noted any changes in appearance and checked to make sure the lights were working properly.

We then set the lights up outside and evaluated how easy they were to install. Finally, we made sure they were on the right setting (dusk-to-dawn mode, turned on, or left alone if automatic) and set up a video camera to record them overnight. After reviewing the recording, we noted when each light turned on and off, to make sure they worked as expected.

For the lights tested in our homes, we assembled, charged, and installed them, and noted their brightness, how long they stayed lit at night, and how they weathered through storms.

What to Look for in a Solar Pathway Light

Solar pathway lights are available in a variety of styles, but the most common are in-ground, low-profile lights, and lantern lights. The former is a minimalist option for areas you may not want to obstruct, such as a pool deck or the outline of a patio. While these lights maintain a certain aesthetic, they have design drawbacks because dirt, leaves, snow, and ice can easily cover their solar panels. They can also be broken if stepped on. Lantern-style lights stick out of the ground on a pole and blend into a more traditional aesthetic. Typically, they have larger solar panels for better charging capabilities and don’t need cleaning as often as low-profile lights. For example, our best splurge pick, the Frontgate Pro Series VI Solar Path Light , is a lantern-style light, while our best small pick, the Rayolon Solar Ground Lights , is a low profile light.

Most solar light product descriptions note brightness in lumens, from 5 to 200; the greater the number, the brighter the light. A lower brightness, such as 5 lumens, is enough to make out your landscaping. To see more details and colors in the evening, select a higher-lumen product. Some solar lights will feature adjustable light settings including a power switch and low- or high-brightness levels. During testing, our best for winter pick , the URPOWER Solar Lights Outdoor , stood out for their adjustable solar panel and dual-level light options, which automatically turn on and also feature a power switch to save battery power when you’re out of town.

Some solar lights don't require constant bright sun exposure, but all require a location where they can receive six to eight hours of sun per day. Also, a longer initial exposure may be required. “Expose the solar lights to full sun for 12 to 14 hours before starting installation,” Kunkle says. “This will allow the battery to fully charge and uncover any lights that may be defective before you install them.” Afterward, you can expect around six hours as a low charge time and from eight to 12 hours for higher-luminosity products. If solar lights show signs of low brightness or a short run time, you may need to relocate them or clean off the panels.

Weather Resistance

While all outdoor solar lights are designed for outdoor use, the level of weather resistance can vary. If you live in an area that experiences a high level of wind, rain, and freezing temperatures (and want to keep your lights out year-round) you may want to look for lights that have a higher Ingress Protection (IP) rating. This is a measurement of dust and water resistance. The lights on this list vary from a rating of IP44 (able to withstand water sprays, but not water jets), to a rating as high as IP65 (withstands a light spraying of water jets in all directions). Solar lights absorb sunlight through solar panels that store electricity, which powers the bulbs. Some solar lights operate on rechargeable batteries. Others have batteries that can last as long as four years before needing to be replaced.

While each style of our recommended solar pathway light has different assembly instructions, all install in the ground via stakes. If your purchased lights’ stakes seem fragile, we recommend digging shallow holes before pressing them into the ground to prevent breakage. Solar eclipse 2024: A traveller’s guide to the best places to be when the light goes out

O n 8 April 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America , providing an astronomical experience in many alluring locations.

Only a tiny proportion of humanity has ever witnessed a total eclipse – but tens of millions of people will be able to experience one as the “path of totality” sweeps from the Pacific to the Atlantic during the course of that magical Monday.

Here’s what you need to know about why you should see it and where to be.

What happens during a total solar eclipse?

The greatest show on earth comes courtesy of the lifeless moon. Normally the orbiting lunar lump merely provides earth with tides, moonlight and somewhere to aim space rockets. But roughly once a year the natural satellite aligns with the sun and, thanks to a geometric miracle, blots out the hub of the solar system to create a total eclipse.

“Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, it’s also about 400 times closer to earth than the sun is,” says Nasa. “This means that from earth, the moon and the sun appear to be roughly the same size in the sky.”

A narrow band marking the “path of totality” carves an arc of darkness across the surface of our planet. If you are somewhere on that line at the predicted time, and you have clear skies, then the experience will become a lifelong memory.

The closer you are to the centre of the path of totality, the longer the total eclipse will last. The astronomer Dr John Mason, who has guided dozens of eclipse trips (and will be doing so again in 2024), says: “People down in southwest Texas will get about four minutes 20 seconds, and that reduces to about three minutes 20 seconds up in the northeast. That’s a pretty good, long total eclipse.”

What’s so good about seeing an eclipse?

In the days leading up to the eclipse, locations in the path of totality acquire something of a carnival atmosphere as astronomical tourists converge in excited anticipation.

On the day, the cosmological performance begins with a warm-up lasting more than an hour, during which the moon steadily nibbles away at the surface of the sun.

Suddenly, you experience totality. The stars and planets appear in the middle of the day. The air chills.

To testify to the heavenly fit between our two most familiar heavenly bodies, faint diamonds known as Baily’s beads peek out from behind the moon. They actually comprise light from the sun slipping through lunar valleys.

A sight to behold – so long as you can see the moon blotting out the sun and appreciate the mathematical perfection of nature in our corner of the galaxy.

Eclipses are entirely predictable: we know the stripes that the next few dozen will paint upon the surface of the Earth. But the weather is not. Cloud cover, which blighted the Cornwall eclipse in 1999, downgrades a cosmological marvel to an eerie daytime gloom.

Almost as predictable as the eclipse is that traffic towards the path of totality will be heavy on the morning of 8 April 2024.

Accommodation rates are astronomical: even humdrum motel rooms in Niagara, central in the path of totality, are selling for C$600 (£350) for the night of 7-8 April 2024.

Where will the great American eclipse 2024 be visible?

The path of totality makes landfall from the Pacific at Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific Coast and sweeps northeastwards to reach the US-Mexican border at Piedras Negras.

In the US, three big Texan cities – San Antonio, Austin and Dallas – are on the extremes of the path of totality; many citizens are likely to drive to locations near the centre of the line.

Arkansas will be an attractive place to see the eclipse , with both Texarkana (on the border with Texas) and Little Rock within the path of totality.

In the Midwest, Indianapolis and Cleveland share the distinction of being fairly central in the path of totality. In upstate New York, Buffalo and nearby Niagara Falls (shared with Canada) could be extremely attractive – though prone in early April to cloudy skies.

In Canada , Montreal is just touched by the path of totality. The line then reverts to the US, passing across northern Maine – which promises to be a superb with clear skies. Then back to Canada’s Maritime Provinces, with New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland all in the line of darkness.

Will I be able to see a partial eclipse from the UK?

Yes. The eclipse ends with the sunset in the eastern Atlantic, about 600 miles off the coast of Cornwall , before it reaches the UK and Ireland . But on the island of Ireland and western parts of Great Britain, a partial eclipse may be visible with the sun low in the sky.

If skies are clear and you have an open view to the west, it will start at around 7.55pm in Cardiff, Liverpool , Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

BBC Weather presenter Simon King said: “With the partial solar eclipse occurring late in the day UK time, the Sun will be low to the horizon and will actually set before the spectacle is over.”

Can I combine an exciting city with a partial eclipse?

Boston, New York and Chicago are among the big cities that will see a sizeable chunk of the sun blotted out. Viewer as far apart as Alaska and the far north of Colombia and the Caribbean will, if skies are clear and they use the correct eye protection, see a partial eclipse. But there is nothing to compare with a total eclipse.

Eclipse guru Dr Mason sums up the difference between a 99 per cent partial eclipse and a total eclipse as far apart as “a peck on the cheek and a night of passion”.

“There will be people who will look at the map and say, ‘I live in Cincinnati or I live in Columbus [Ohio] and I’m just outside the zone of totality. But I’m going to get a 99 per cent-plus eclipse, so maybe I won’t bother to travel’.

“What they don’t realise is there an enormous difference between 99 per cent and 100 per cent. And there’s a range of phenomena that they won’t see if they put up with 99 per cent.”

You must use special eclipse safety glasses or viewers when viewing a partial eclipse or during the partial phases of a total solar eclipse.

Where should I be for the total experience?

There are no guarantees of clear skies: all you can do is play the odds based on the record of cloud cover for the corresponding date in previous years.

Dr Mason says the average expected cloud cover amounts increase from around 40-45 per cent on the Mexico/Texas border to over 80 per cent in Maine, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Three particularly tempting locations:

• Southern Texas , close to San Antonio or Austin. Besides clear skies being more likely than not, access is easy with direct flights to Austin. Importantly there is much to explore in the region before and after the eclipse, from Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande to Space Center Houston – an excellent place to continue the cosmological theme.
• Northern Arkansas , a picturesque part of the state, with the added attraction of Memphis just a couple of hours away.
• Niagara Falls : the dramatic border between the US and Canada could be an eclipse washout due to clouds. But the natural surroundings are impeccable – and there is plenty of accommodation, which will avoid the risk of being caught in severe traffic congestion on the freeways from Toronto and locations in New York State.

However, the most recent forecasts for cloud cover suggest that the Midwest around Indianapolis and the northeastern state of Maine could have the best prospects.

When are the next total solar eclipses?

Summer 2026 – Wednesday 12 August, to be precise – should bring a spectacular eclipse visible in northern Spain at the height of the European holiday season. The path of totality begins in the Arctic and crosses Greenland and Iceland before arriving in the northern half of Spain. The stripe of darkness will traverse the great cities of Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia in mainland Spain before arriving in Palma de Mallorca.

The following summer (2 August 2027), the southern tip of mainland Spain is in the path of totality for an eclipse that will sweep across North Africa and the Arabian peninsula : going east from the Strait of Gibraltar, it will encompass Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, the northeasternmost corner of Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Just under 12 months later, on 22 July 2028, Outback Australia will be the place to be. A total eclipse will make landfall in northern Western Australia, sweep across the Northern Territory and part of southwest Queensland – then clean across New South Wales, with Sydney in the middle of the path of totality.

Winter cloud cover could disrupt the experience in Australia’s largest city – and is very likely in the southern portion of New Zealand’s South Island where the eclipse reaches a finale.

Australia also features in the cosmological plans on 25 November 2030. This is early summer in the southern hemisphere, and likely to be good conditions for viewing in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Durban is on the path of totality) as well as South Australia.

Introduction

Venus is the second planet from the Sun, and Earth's closest planetary neighbor. Venus is the third brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon. Venus spins slowly in the opposite direction from most planets.

Venus is similar in structure and size to Earth, and is sometimes called Earth's evil twin. Its thick atmosphere traps heat in a runaway greenhouse effect, making it the hottest planet in our solar system with surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead. Below the dense, persistent clouds, the surface has volcanoes and deformed mountains.

How Venus Got Its Name

The ancient Romans could easily see seven bright objects in the sky: the Sun, the Moon, and the five brightest planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. They named the objects after their most important gods.

Potential for Life

Thirty miles up (about 50 kilometers) from the surface of Venus temperatures range from 86 to 158 Fahrenheit (30 to 70 Celsius). This temperature range could accommodate Earthly life, such as “extremophile” microbes. And atmospheric pressure at that height is similar to what we find on Earth’s surface.

At the tops of Venus’ clouds, whipped around the planet by winds measured as high as 224 mph (360 kph), we find another transformation. Persistent, dark streaks appear. Scientists are so far unable to explain why these streaks remain stubbornly intact, even amid hurricane-force winds. They also have the odd habit of absorbing ultraviolet radiation.

The most likely explanations focus on fine particles, ice crystals, or even a chemical compound called iron chloride. Although it's much less likely, another possibility considered by scientists who study astrobiology is that these streaks could be made up of microbial life, Venus-style. Astrobiologists note that ring-shaped linkages of sulfur atoms, known to exist in Venus’ atmosphere, could provide microbes with a kind of coating that would protect them from sulfuric acid. These handy chemical cloaks would also absorb potentially damaging ultraviolet light and re-radiate it as visible light.

Some of the Russian Venera probes did, indeed, detect particles in Venus’ lower atmosphere about a micron in length – roughly the same size as a bacterium on Earth.

None of these findings provide compelling evidence for the existence of life in Venus’ clouds. But the questions they raise, along with Venus’ vanished ocean, its violently volcanic surface, and its hellish history, make a compelling case for missions to investigate our temperamental sister planet. There is much, it would seem, that she can teach us.

Size and Distance

Venus orbits the Sun from an average distance of 67 million miles (108 million kilometers), or 0.72 astronomical units. One astronomical unit (abbreviated as AU), is the distance from the Sun to Earth. From this distance, it takes sunlight about six minutes to travel from the Sun to Venus.

Earth's nearness to Venus is a matter of perspective. The planet is nearly as big around as Earth. Its diameter at its equator is about 7,521 miles (12,104 kilometers), versus 7,926 miles (12,756 kilometers) for Earth. From Earth, Venus is the brightest object in the night sky after our own Moon. The ancients, therefore, gave it great importance in their cultures, even thinking it was two objects: a morning star and an evening star. That’s where the trick of perspective comes in.

Because Venus’ orbit is closer to the Sun than ours, the two of them – from our viewpoint – never stray far from each other. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks saw Venus in two guises: first in one orbital position (seen in the morning), then another (your “evening” Venus), just at different times of the year.

At its nearest to Earth , Venus is about 24 million (about 38 million kilometers) distant. But most of the time the two planets are farther apart; Mercury, the innermost planet, actually spends more time in Earth’s proximity than Venus.

One more trick of perspective: how Venus looks through binoculars or a telescope. Keep watch over many months, and you’ll notice that Venus has phases, just like our Moon – full, half, quarter, etc. The complete cycle, however, new to full, takes 584 days, while our Moon takes just a month. And it was this perspective, the phases of Venus first observed by Galileo through his telescope, that provided the key scientific proof for the Copernican heliocentric nature of the solar system.

Orbit and Rotation

Spending a day on Venus would be quite a disorienting experience – that is, if your spacecraft or spacesuit could protect you from temperatures in the range of 900 degrees Fahrenheit (475 Celsius). For one thing, your “day” would be 243 Earth days long – longer even than a Venus year (one trip around the Sun), which takes only 225 Earth days. For another, because of the planet's extremely slow rotation, sunrise to sunset would take 117 Earth days. And by the way, the Sun would rise in the west and set in the east, because Venus spins backward compared to Earth.

While you’re waiting, don’t expect any seasonal relief from the unrelenting temperatures. On Earth, with its spin axis tilted by about 23 degrees, we experience summer when our part of the planet (our hemisphere) receives the Sun’s rays more directly – a result of that tilt. In winter, the tilt means the rays are less direct. No such luck on Venus: Its very slight tilt is only three degrees, which is too little to produce noticeable seasons.

Venus is one of only two planets in our solar system that doesn't have a moon, but it does have a quasi-satellite that has officially been named Zoozve . This object was discovered on Nov. 11, 2002, by Brian Skiff at the Lowell Observatory Near-Earth-Object Search (LONEOS) in Flagstaff, Arizona, a project funded by NASA that ended in February 2008.  

Quasi-satellites, sometimes called quasi-moons, are asteroids that orbit the Sun while staying close to a planet. A quasi-satellite’s orbit usually is more oblong and less stable than the planet's orbit. In time, the shape of a quasi-satellite’s orbit may change and it may move away from the planet. 

According to the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the organization that names space objects, Zoozve is the first-identified quasi-satellite of a major planet. Earth also has quasi-satellites, including a small asteroid discovered in 2016 . 

Based on its brightness, scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) estimate Zoozve ranges in size from 660 feet (200 meters) to 1,640 feet (500 meters) across. 

Interestingly, Zoozve also orbits relatively close to Earth but does not pose a threat to our planet. For the next 175 years, the closest Zoozve will get to Earth is in the year 2149 when it will be about 2.2 million miles (3.5 million kilometers) away, or about 9 times the distance from Earth to the Moon.  

How Zoozve Got Its Name  

After the discovery in 2002, Skiff reported his finding to the Minor Planet Center , which is funded by a Near-Earth Object (NEO) Observations Program grant from NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office . At that time, it was given the provisional name 2002 VE68. Skiff said he didn’t realize the asteroid’s importance and forgot about the object until a radio show host reached out to him in 2023 about naming it Zoozve. 

Soon after Skiff’s discovery, a team of astronomers, including Seppo Mikkola with the University of Turku in Finland and Paul Wiegert with the University of Western Ontario in London, determined that the object was the first of its kind to be discovered. They think that Zoozve may have been a companion to Venus for at least 7,000 years, and that Earth’s gravity helped push Zoozve into its present orbit. 

The name Zoozve comes from a child's poster of the solar system. The artist, Alex Foster, saw “2002 VE68” on a list of solar system objects, wrote down “2002 VE,” and then misread his own handwriting as “Zoozve.”  

Latif Nasser, co-host of the WNYC Studios show Radiolab, tracked down the source of the mistake with the help of Liz Landau , a NASA senior communications specialist. Nasser suggested that Skiff request that the IAU officially name the asteroid Zoozve. Skiff agreed, and the name Zoozve was approved in February 2024. 

Venus has no rings.

A critical question for scientists who search for life among the stars: How do habitable planets get their start? The close similarities of early Venus and Earth, and their very different fates, provide a kind of test case for scientists who study planet formation. Similar size, similar interior structure, both harboring oceans in their younger days. Yet one is now an inferno, while the other is the only known world to host abundant life. The factors that set these planets on almost opposite paths began, most likely, in the swirling disk of gas and dust from which they were born. Somehow, 4.6 billion years ago that disk around our Sun accreted, cooled, and settled into the planets we know today. Better knowledge of the formation history of Venus could help us better understand Earth – and rocky planets around other stars.

If we could slice Venus and Earth in half, pole to pole, and place them side by side, they would look remarkably similar. Each planet has an iron core enveloped by a hot-rock mantle; the thinnest of skins forms a rocky, exterior crust. On both planets, this thin skin changes form and sometimes erupts into volcanoes in response to the ebb and flow of heat and pressure deep beneath.

On Earth, the slow movement of continents over thousands and millions of years reshapes the surface, a process known as “plate tectonics.” Something similar might have happened on Venus early in its history. Today a key element of this process could be operating: subduction, or the sliding of one continental “plate” beneath another, which can also trigger volcanoes. Subduction is believed to be the first step in creating plate tectonics.

NASA’s Magellan spacecraft, which ended a five-year mission to Venus in 1994, mapped the broiling surface using radar. Magellan saw a land of extreme volcanism – a relatively young surface, one recently reshaped (in geologic terms), and chains of towering mountains.

The Soviet Union sent a series of probes to Venus between 1961 and 1984 as part of its Venera program (Venera is Russian for Venus). Ten probes made it to the surface, and a few functioned briefly after landing. The longest survivor lasted two hours; the shortest, 23 minutes. Photos snapped before the landers fried show a barren, dim, and rocky landscape, and a sky that is likely some shade of sulfur yellow.

Volcanoes and tectonic forces appear to have erased most traces of the early surface of Venus. Newer computer models indicate the resurfacing may have happened piecemeal over an extended period of time. The average age of surface features could be as young as 150 million years, with some older surfaces mixed in.

Venus has valleys and high mountains dotted with thousands of volcanoes. Its surface features – most named for both real and mythical women – include Ishtar Terra, a rocky, highland area around the size of Australia near the north pole, and an even larger, South-America-sized region called Aphrodite Terra that stretches across the equator. One mountain reaches 36,000 feet (11 kilometers), higher than Mt. Everest. Notably, except for Earth, Venus has by far the fewest impact craters of any rocky planet.

Other notable features of the Venus landscape include:

• A volcanic crater named Sacajawea for Lewis and Clark’s Native American guide.
• A deep canyon called Diana for the Roman goddess of the hunt.
• “Pancake” domes with flat tops and steep sides, as wide as 38 miles (62 kilometers), likely formed by the extrusion of highly viscous lava.
• “Tick” domes, odd volcanoes with radiating spurs that, from above, make them look like their blood-feeding namesake.
• Tesserae, terrain with intricate patterns of ridges and grooves that suggest the scorching temperatures make rock behave in some ways more like peanut butter beneath a thin and strong chocolate layer on Venus.

Venus’ atmosphere is one of extremes. With the hottest surface in the solar system, apart from the Sun itself, Venus is hotter even than the innermost planet, charbroiled Mercury. The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide – the same gas driving the greenhouse effect on Venus and Earth – with clouds composed of sulfuric acid. And at the surface, the hot, high-pressure carbon dioxide behaves in a corrosive fashion. But higher up in the atmosphere, temperatures and pressure begin to ease.

Magnetosphere

Even though Venus is similar in size to Earth and has a similar-sized iron core, the planet does not have its own internally generated magnetic field. Instead, Venus has what is known as an induced magnetic field. This weak magnetic field is created by the interaction of the Sun's magnetic field and the planet's outer atmosphere. Ultraviolet light from the Sun excites gases in Venus' outermost atmosphere; these electrically excited gases are called ions, and thus this region is called the ionosphere (Earth has an ionosphere as well). The solar wind – a million-mile-per-hour gale of electrically charged particles streaming continuously from the Sun – carries with it the Sun's magnetic field. When the Sun's magnetic field interacts with the electrically excited ionosphere of Venus, it creates or induces, a magnetic field there. This induced magnetic field envelops the planet and is shaped like an extended teardrop, or the tail of a comet, as the solar wind blows past Venus and outward into the solar system.
