Bedouin at Giza

Egypt holidays 2024 & 2025

Pyramids rise above sun-baked sands. The Sphinx stares, unblinking, into a relentlessly blue sky. Boats wend their way down the waters of the Nile. Traders hawk their wares in the dusty bazaars. In many ways, Egypt seems timeless, unchanging. However, modern politics are very present in this ancient land and our specialists continue to visit Egypt to gauge the atmosphere and levels of service available throughout the country.

In our experience it remains a friendly and hospitable place, and our experts can craft a tailored itinerary to help you explore this dynamic destination. A cruise down the Nile  is still one of the most effective ways to see Egypt, including the archaeological treasures around Aswan and Luxor. But there is more to see on an Egypt holiday than the ancient sites — coral reefs in the clear waters of the Red Sea, afternoon tea at the Victorian-era Old Cataract Hotel, medieval sites in the souqs of Cairo.

Useful information for planning your holiday in Egypt

Modern Standard Arabic is the official language of Egypt. However, you’ll mostly hear people speaking the Egyptian dialect, a colloquial variety of Modern Standard Arabic that has some different words and pronunciation. While people in other Arab countries speak different varieties of Arabic, Egyptian Arabic is widely understood because Egyptian cinema and soap operas are popular across the region.

That said, all of the guides we pair you with can speak English to varying degrees, and you should be able to communicate with drivers, market stall vendors, and other service workers in larger cities and towns. However, in Upper Egypt, away from the main visitor sites, souqs, and hotels, people might not speak any English at all.

The currency of Egypt is the Egyptian pound (LE or EGP), which is divided into 100 piastres (PT). Bank notes come in denominations LE5, LE10, LE20, LE50, LE100, and LE200 and coins in denominations of LE1, PT50, and PT25.

You can use credit cards in hotels, as well as larger restaurants and shops, but not in many other places. There are ATMs in most major towns, and foreign currency can be exchanged for the Egyptian pound at many bank branches and Forex outlets.

You’ll find plenty of falafels, hummus, kofta, and flat bread in Egypt. But for something a little different, we recommend trying Nubian food in the south, such as bamia, an okra stew, or kushari, a spicy lentil and chickpea dish, both of which are typically cooked in earthenware pots.

Egypt has a long history of brewing, so you could try one of the local beers, such as Stella, not to be mistaken with Stella Artois, or Saqqara Gold. For something non-alcoholic, try a sweetened tea with mint leaves or a sugarcane juice.

Tipping, known as baksheesh locally, is expected for almost any service given to you, and you should aim to tip 10–15% in restaurants on top of the standard service charge and VAT.

You should also tip guides, drivers, porters, and other service workers, even if the service given is very small. However, the amount depends on various factors, so we can provide you specific guidance before you travel.

That said, some people will request a tip without even offering a service, such as approaching you and giving you advice or information without you requesting it. In these instances, we recommend that you say no to any unsolicited help and walk away.

For the latest travel advice for Egypt, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office website .

Most people come to Egypt for its sun-baked pyramids, hieroglyphics-carved tombs, and riverside ruins that date back thousands of years, but while there, you can also unwind on the deck of a luxury ship on the Nile, watch vividly patterned fish dart in and out of coral reefs as you snorkel in the Red Sea, or try your hand at bartering in the spangled souqs of Cairo.

We can pair you with an Egyptologist who will reveal the secrets of pharaohs and ancient peoples as you descend into 4000-year-old tombs that still appear to be freshly painted, attempt to decrypt the symbols etched into towering columns, and walk alongside the ever-watchful mythical creatures carved out of stone.

Egypt offers a wealth of different stays, including luxury beach resorts, classically designed hotels overlooking the pyramids, and Nile cruise ships that range from simple and comfortable to around-the-clock butler service. While there are many international hotels dotted around Egypt, we can help you find more characterful stays too, such as a rustic Nubian-style ecolodge or a 19th-century Victorian hotel  perched on a pink granite cliff overlooking the Nile.

Our specialists can help you find an Egyptian stay to suit your tastes, but, in the meantime, you can take a look at a selection of the hotels we have to offer .

It’s usually best to start your Egypt trip in Cairo where you can take in the towering pyramids of Giza before heading onto Luxor  and Aswan to further unravel the mysteries of Ancient Egypt. In Luxor, you can explore the Valley of the Kings, Colossi of Memnon, and Temple of Ramesses III, while Aswan  cradles the imposing temple complexes of Edfu and Kom Ombo as well as the Temple of Philae.

If you’d like to unwind after a whirlwind tour of Egypt’s pharaonic lands, you could add on a beach stay at either Hurghada or El Quseir to swim and snorkel in the coral-adorned Red Sea , or head north to Alexandria to learn about the Greco-Roman past of this now-chilled-out city.

Many people also combine Egypt with a trip to Jordan to witness the third-century ruins of Petra .

It takes around 5–7 hours to fly from the UK to Cairo, Egypt. We recommend flying with British Airways, Air France, Egypt Air, and a few other airlines, which we can advise on.

The time zone in Egypt is GMT+2 from October to April and GMT+3 from April to October.

The best way to get around Egypt across longer distances, such as between Cairo and Luxor, is to fly, and then you can take private cars with a guide for shorter distances. Another popular way of seeing Egypt is taking a cruise along the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, discovering the ancient civilisations that flourished on the riverbanks along the way.

British passport holders typically need a three-month visa to enter Egypt. These can be purchased before you travel on the official government website or you can buy one on arrival for $25 per person, which must be paid in US dollars.

You should check with your doctor to see which vaccinations you’ll need for Egypt, but we recommend that you’re at least up to date with the vaccinations recommended for your home country. You can take a look at suggested vaccinations for Egypt on the Travel Health Pro website .

Your passport must be valid for six months after the date of departure from Egypt and have a minimum of one unstamped double page free.

Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country, and while you don’t need to cover up completely, the more you do, the less unwanted attention you’ll get. Men should never be in public without some kind of shirt on, and women are best to cover their shoulders and knees. You should remove shoes if visiting a mosque, no matter your gender, and women will need to cover their hair.

The weather in Egypt is typically hot and dry during the day but can become much cooler in the evening during the winter months (December to March), so we also recommend packing layers, as well as comfortable and sturdy shoes.

During the holy month of Ramadan, many Muslim locals will be fasting, and while you won’t be expected to fast too, you shouldn’t eat, drink or smoke in public out of respect. You may find that restaurants and shops change their opening hours to help staff who are fasting and attending the mosque for prayer, but hotels and visitor sites will remain open as normal.

No, it’s forbidden to photograph any military or government buildings in Egypt. Similarly, you should also avoid photographing bridges, canals, or anything that could be construed as having strategic significance. Your guide will be able to help you understand what you can and can’t take photos of during your trip.

Best time to visit egypt.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius - perfect for snorkelling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by travelling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating on reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humour to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Foods to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chilli paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the north-east corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterised by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defence. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighbouring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognise Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians and travellers are all amazed by this civilisation which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting of crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artefacts and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

Top 10 ancient wonders of Egypt

1. grand designs.

The original grand design - monumental and magnificent - the Pyramids of Giza are an impressive achievement in ancient engineering. Towering above the desert sands and standing proudly for centuries, the first glimpse of these stunning structures will render visitors breathless.

2. Stony enigma

Be captivated by the mysterious aura of the Great Sphinx of Giza. This monolithic mythical beast possesses a lion’s body and a human head - and has sat quietly in the desert sands for eons. Gaze at the Sphinx and try to work out the riddle of its existence.

3. Mighty Nile River

No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Nile River - the life force of Egypt that has flowed for centuries. A provider of irrigation, an essential travel route, home to hippos and crocodiles, and now a source of leisure for locals and travellers alike, the Nile is an aquatic link to Egypt’s ancient heritage.

4. Terrific temples

Discover an enormous open-air museum like no other. The awe-inspiring Temples of Karnak are filled with stately statues, immense columns and gigantic gateways. Explore this intriguing site and be left in no doubt about the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian civilisation.

5. Holy mountains

Embark on a trek to the top of Mt Sinai and witness an incredible golden sunrise to remember. A place of worship for many faiths, a pilgrimage to Mt Sinai reveals stunning scenery, an ancient monastery and historic chapels. An iconic highlight of Egypt for believers and non-believers alike, Mt Sinai is not to be missed.

6. Double happiness

Located in the Nile Valley, the unique Temple of Kom Ombo is a ‘double temple’ and a rare archaeological find. Dedicated to two gods, a visit here is a true highlight of an Egyptian escapade. Marvel at the well-preserved wall reliefs, try to decipher the hieroglyphics and honour the craftsmen who created this wonder.

7. Museum magic

Step into a dazzling world of antiquity at the Egyptian Museum. Be amazed by the glittering treasures recovered from King Tutankhamun’s tomb – with jewellery, furniture, chariots and that famous gold funerary mask, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

8. Roman ruins

The Roman ruins of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria may not be the biggest, but they are certainly among the best-preserved in Egypt, if not the world. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheatre and imagine it in all its glory - packed with 800 spectators ready for action.

9. Colossal characters

Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.

10. The ancient heart of Cairo

Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewellery, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple, and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customise them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI-travellers in Egypt. Though homosexuality is not officially outlawed, gay men have been prosecuted using debauchery and public morals laws and given long prison sentences. Be aware that signals are ambiguous in Egypt as men commonly hold hands, link arms and greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. As long as you use common sense, travel in Egypt should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex  or ILGA before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re travelling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-coloured clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

Where will I stay in Egypt?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

These are some of the types of accomodations you will stay in:

Felucca Glide down the Nile on a traditional Egyptian felucca; sleep on deck under the stars as the sun slides away for the day - a must-do experience while in Egypt. Homestay

Be welcomed into the home of a local family and experience the cuisine, culture and customs of Egypt firsthand during your stay. A truly authentic travel experience like no other.

Desert camp Travel deep into the White Desert to camp under the stars amid surreal scenery. This is a rare chance to experience the remote wonder and isolation of the Egyptian desert.

Beach hut With calming Red Sea views and fresh sea breezes, this rustic breach abode is all about life’s simple pleasures.

How will I travel around Egypt?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What is it like travelling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my trip to Egypt support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Egypt directly support our foundation partner, Animal Care in Egypt .

Animal Care in Egypt

Animal Care in Egypt (ACE) cares for sick or injured working animals, like horses and donkeys, in Upper Egypt. Donations from our trips help ACE provide free veterinary care and fund education programs that empower local people with the knowledge and skills to best look after their animals.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

"We had a wonderful experience! All the sights and places we visited were amazing. The hotels were very good indeed. Everything was superbly organised and the local people who looked after us were excellent. Many thanks indeed to you and your staff for such excellent organisation and arrangements. I think we will definitely have to visit again!" A.S. (February 2019)
"I just wanted to write and Thank you and Soliman Travel for going above and beyond on our trip to Egypt. I was blown away by the organisation and schedule and I felt like a VIP and very blessed to experience your hospitality and professionalism throughout our stay. The Trip itself was unforgettable and there was not one day that Kiren and I were not amazed by the sights, places and people .. We could not stop smiling and every day was absolutely fabulous. You have really made this a Trip of a lifetime and I will be forever grateful that you made this happen and I was able to experience such a wonderful country." Barbara (October 2022)
“A very big thank you for organising our tour to Venice. We all very much appreciated all the care and your attention to detail to ensure all went smoothly and it did. All went well and everyone enjoyed their break away."   Jennette (April 2023)
"Absolutely brilliant service, would 100% recommend and hope I have the opportunity to use Soliman Travel again. We dealt with Victoria who bent over backwards to meet the needs of my group of 6 travellers. She took all of the frustration of planning a holiday and gave us lots of options for a Nile Cruise. We eventually settled on a 4 night cruise, an overnight train to Luxor and return flights from Aswan to Cairo. All transfers were taken care of and there were staff located in Cairo that were able to assist with local queries. We wanted to change flight times at very short notice, Victoria took care of this without any issues. Communication was prompt and always friendly and professional. We received the holiday of a lifetime and would love to thank Victoria and Soliman Travel for facilitating this. I last used Soliman Travel over 30 years ago! Great to see this family business doing so well!" Ash (January 2024)
"Hi everyone! well, what can I say about Soliman .... other than absolutely outstanding service! ... from the moment I pick up the phone. My gratitude to Veronica, Sandra, Lucero and everyone who has made every trip worry free, either last minute or planned trip to my home country. It's a big plus when able to express certain worries or inconveniences, in Spanish! You guys are the best! - My last trip, although very difficult due to a family emergency, you've managed to accommodate my light plan with ease, friendliness and professionalism! My gratitude to you all. Keep up the great work, believe me...you are an asset to this firm!...muchas Gracias de todo Corazon!" Yoshi (May 2023)
" I had a fabulous time in Egypt and got to see everything I wanted. I have to say that Bishoy from the Cairo office was just great. He explained everything with regards to timings and tours and was just a pleasure to deal with. He’s a real asset to your company. Hope the feedback helps, we were overall really happy with everything. My sister plans to travel to Egypt and I’ve already told her to contact you when ready to book something, because we were so happy with the itinerary you arranged. I’m looking forward to Jordon already. I think you can also cover Mexico? If so will ask you to arrange a tour for us there too" Jane (December 2023)

5 Reasons for the British to visit Egypt.

Egypt is undoubtedly a gift from God to the delight of mankind. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful countries in the world and with the greatest number of charms: ancient monuments more than 3500 years old, immense deserts that even today keep an infinite number of treasures waiting to be discovered, a river full of love stories and of course its millenary culture.

Traveling to these dreamlands is a magical experience. In addition to its cultural tourism diversity, in Egypt, you can enjoy other outdoor activities from riding a camel in the desert to taking a romantic cruise on the Nile, to staying at the best resorts located on the sweet beaches of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

There are infinite reasons why anyone should visit the land of pharaohs at least once in their life. But if we said 5 powerful reasons to visit Egypt and not to let pass this experience we would summarize them in the following ones:

  • It has a great number of monuments and natural spaces declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • You can see the largest pyramids in the world and the highest density of these per square meter.
  • It is a country immersed in the desert and can be explored in a thousand different ways.
  • You can enjoy idyllic beaches on both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, and the best luxury resorts.
  • There are treasures everywhere: in the museums, in the desert, in the temples...

Would you like to know what the life of the ancient gods and the greatest pharaohs was like? There are many monuments, temples, pyramids, jewels, etc. that were made in their name and for their veneration.

We offer the traveler an endless number of possibilities so that you can enjoy the best places in Egypt, from tasting an exquisite gastronomic variety to visiting the colossal pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, the impressive Egyptian Museum in Cairo, touring the majestic Temples, walking through the Valley of the Kings and riding a camel in the desert.

What is very important to know, is that when you go on a trip, it is necessary to know the culture and customs of the country you are visiting so that there is no misunderstanding.

That is why it is highly recommended to request the services of a travel agency that has a professional team that knows the country from head to toe at the administrative, legal, cultural, and social levels.

Conflict in neighbouring Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs)

The Israeli government has declared a state of emergency across the whole country. International borders in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) could close at short notice. As a result, the land border into Israel from Egypt at Taba could close with little notice. Check with local authorities and consult the travel advice for  Israel  and the  Occupied Palestinian Territories  before trying to cross the border.

In response to events in Israel and the OPTs, a number of demonstrations have taken place in Egypt and protests have been planned, including after Friday prayers. Demonstrations could take place at short notice, with a heavy security presence in place. You should avoid large gatherings, demonstrations and protests. See  Safety and security

Entering Egypt from Gaza

The Rafah border crossing partially opened on 1 November. This is primarily to facilitate the evacuation of seriously wounded Palestinians and some foreign nationals. We understand that the crossing will continue to be open for controlled and time-limited periods to allow specific groups of foreign nationals, including British nationals, to cross. It is for the Egyptian and Israeli authorities to determine who is permitted to cross, and when. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will contact Embassies to let them know when their foreign nationals can cross. Should we receive notification from the Israeli and Egyptian authorities that individuals are permitted to cross, we will notify those people individually.

Movement to the Rafah crossing and beyond is at your own risk. You should only travel if you judge it is safe to do so. Check the  Israel and The Occupied Palestinian Territories travel advice.

The Egyptian authorities have said all aid going into Gaza from Egypt must be channelled through the Egyptian Red Crescent:

  • telephone: + 20 226 703 979, + 20 226 703 983
  • fax: + 20 226 703 967

They are unlikely to consider requests for humanitarian access made in Egypt at short notice.

Concern for friends and family

If you are concerned about friends or family, or need consular assistance call:

  • British Embassy Cairo on + 20 (0)2 2791 6000
  • +44 1767 667 600  (UK number) if you experience technical difficulties with the above number

Incidents in South Sinai

On 27 October, an Egyptian Armed Forces spokesperson confirmed that an unidentified drone fell near a medical facility in the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Taba next to the Israeli border, injuring six people. An additional unidentified drone also struck outside the town of Nuweiba, though no casualties have been confirmed. The authorities are conducting ongoing investigations.

Incident in Alexandria

On 8 October 2023, an Egyptian police officer is reported to have shot and killed two Israeli tourists and an Egyptian tour guide in Alexandria. A third tourist was injured. Remain vigilant and exercise caution at tourist and religious sites, as well as public gatherings. Find out more information on current risks on the  Safety and security .

Border crossings from Sudan

There are still people trying to cross the border into Egypt at Argeen and Qustul. Our ability to provide consular assistance is very limited.

If you are a British national and have crossed the border without valid documentation, contact the British Embassy in Cairo for consular assistance on + 20 (0)2 2791 6000.

Before you travel

No travel can be guaranteed safe. Read all the advice in this guide as well as support for British nationals abroad which includes:

  • advice on preparing for travel abroad and reducing risks
  • information for women, LGBT+ and disabled travellers

Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram . You can also sign up to get email notifications when this advice is updated.

  • Luxury Egypt Travel: Our Approach

High End Journeys is a boutique luxury travel agency, started by Egyptologists and best friends, Ahmed Aziz and Ramez Salama. Both share a passion for travel and draw on their combined industry experience of 34 years to deliver a personalized itinerary for their guests. They work with a singular aim in mind - to create unforgettable memories for every traveler.

Francis Tapon

egypt travel agency uk

Together we have over 30 years of experience in the Luxury Tour industry in Egypt, directing tours with one of the leading companies in the luxury market around the world.

While we value the comfort and amenities existing luxury tours offer, we both have come to realize that too often these luxury tours were missing a real human connection - and especially an opportunity to connect with the people of Egypt and the valuable sites and experiences that are off the well-beaten track of every other luxury tour.

Our vision was to create a tour experience that offered all of the comfort and standards that one has come to expect from over 100 years of luxury tours in Egypt, but with a modern spin that caters to the traveler committed to experiencing the hidden gems of Egypt outside of the typical tourist bubble.

The more we imagined what a new generation of luxury touring could become, the more we realized we were uniquely qualified to offer those experiences to our clients.

Five years ago, while both directing on the same luxury cruise on the Nile, we had one especially enthusiastic client who encouraged us out of his own experience as an entrepreneur and businessman, to make our dream a reality today while we were young and positioned to become leaders in changing the luxury tour market in Egypt into the future.

So we took that leap of faith in 2016 and established High End Journeys in 2017. Come along with us as we take you off the beaten path to experience the future of travel in Egypt.

This is our vision for what a high-end luxury tour should be all about: connecting people to people; helping people experience Egypt outside the tourist bubble; allowing Egypt to inspire and change our understanding of the world around us all. Egypt’s ancient history and timeless culture have the power to transform the lives of our guests. We have witnessed that incredible transformation first hand and know that we are called to accompany this next generation of travelers to Egypt to continue to be changed by its people and its treasures.

Travel Egypt in luxury, the way you want

Feel like watching the sunset by the Giza Pyramids? Or want to savour wine on a private yacht as you sail down the river Nile? Or want to dine on an authentic gourmet meal on a felucca on the river at Aswan?

Give us your bucket-list and we will make it happen!"

COVID-19 Updates

Do i need to take a pcr test before visiting egypt.

It is mandatory to have a valid negative PCR test result. No country is exempted from this rule as of today.

The test with has to be taken within 72 hours of taking the last flight to Egypt. Some exceptions are made for some flights, where the timeframe can be 96 hours. (Japan / China / Thailand / North America / South America / Canada / London (Heathrow) /Rome / Paris / Frankfurt / New Zealand / Australia/South Korea)

It has to be an original stamped certificate, from an accredited laboratory, in Arabic or English, and includes the exact time of the test.

Children under the age of 6 are exempted.

*Make sure you contact us before making any travel plans regarding any new regulation updates*

Do I have to be quarantined upon arrival?

No quarantine is needed when visiting Egypt during the pandemic. The only mandatory rule is the PCR test result and of course it is very important to follow the safety measures during your visit such as social distancing and making sure you always wear a mask in crowded areas or indoors.

Do I need a vaccination in order to enter Egypt?

As of now, you do not need it .

The government hasn’t issued an official statement yet but as vaccines become readily available throughout the world, we believe things will change and you might need to have a valid proof of being properly vaccinated against the coronavirus. All countries are going towards this direction to end the pandemic and we advise you to take the vaccine as soon as it’s possible where you live.

What are the precautions taken in Egypt regarding COVID-19?

  • You have to wear your mask in public areas and during transportation, and only take if off when you really need to, for example if you are eating or drinking.
  • All travelers must have a valid travel insurance certificate upon arrival.
  • You need to maintain social distancing and keep at least a 1-meter distance from the person closest to you.

GENERAL FAQ

What languages are widely spoken in egypt.

While the official language of the country is Arabic , most locals will be able to understand English as it’s the second language for many.

Most Egyptians will be able to understand basic English , and a lot of locals fluently speak it, specially people working in tourism like our tour guides, and of course hotel staff.

English is the most common second language taught in schools, preceding French and German being less common.

Some areas like Hurghada for example, have locals speaking different languages like basic Russian and German as the majority of tourists are from Russian and German backgrounds.

Empire Travel and other companies will be able to provide guests with the right tour guide speaking their language, whatever that language may be.

Do I need an entry visa to enter Egypt?

The entry visa can be taken on arrival at the airport for most nationalities. It costs $25 (as of May 2021).

You can also apply online to have it in possession before departure or find out if your nationality requires an application beforehand through the official website here.

Is it a good idea to rent a car for my trip?

You can rent a car and drive around Egypt at your own pace, if you have a valid international driving license.

We advise not to do that, though. The main reason is the nature of driving in Egypt.

If you are used to driving in countries like the US and Canada; countries with high road conditions standards, then it will be very challenging for you to get used to the driving environment in Egypt. While main roads are safe, some side roads are bumpy and the way of driving is different (cars are very close to each other, and sometimes drivers don’t follow the rules of sticking to a certain lane, etc.)

If you are booking your trip with a travel company like Empire Travel , then the company will provide you with it’s own transportation and a private professional driver, and it shall be included in your program/itinerary by default, also keep in mind that the accompanying private tour guide/egyptologist can answer questions about the place you’re visiting or other questions about the city.

It’s recommended, if you are not using a travel agent’s services, to use applications like Uber and Careem for your trips, if you need a ride.

On a side note; navigation apps like Google Maps and other software are very accurate and will get you to your destination, or provide you with correct information about a certain place, ETA, reviews and live traffic conditions.

How much cash do I need for my visit? And where can I use my credit cards?

Credit card payments are available in most places around Egypt, specially hotels, restaurants, malls, and other major outlets. ( Visa and MasterCard are the main two accepted types of credit cards. American Express , Diner’s Club and other uncommon cards are not widely accepted except in certain hotels and higher end places)

Of course cash is the ultimate method for payments, specially in small outlets like street kiosks (when buying candy, soda, or mineral water, etc.) and tipping for various services. It’s advisable to always keep a good amount of cash in EGP on hand.

Do not exchange currency with strangers, instead opt for official money exchange offices which are widely available in airports, hotels, and main streets (make sure you ask your guide before doing the exchange, as they should know where is the best place to do it.)

Can I drink Alcohol in Egypt?

Alcoholic beverages are served and allowed in Egypt, the legal drinking age is 21.

All 5 star hotels, bars and restaurants offer alcohol on their menu, and you can buy your alcoholic drinks from a lot of places around the country, specially touristic areas.

Not all restaurants or coffeeshops serve alcohol, as it requires a certain license, so ask about the place you are visiting before going if you would like to drink. Touristic cities like Sharm el sheikh, Hurghada, and similar places should have more locations where alcohol is available.

Do not drink on the streets, as alcohol is usually frowned upon by many locals, being of a muslim background which Alcohol is prohibited to drink.

There are stores with very affordable prices that can even deliver locally brewed alcohol to your doorstep ( Drinkie’s and Cheers are the most common.)

*Note* During the holy month of Ramadan , most of these shops are closed. Hotels and higher end bars and restaurants are the only places allowed to serve exclusively for foreigners, so make sure you have your passport/ID with you to prove you are not Egyptian.

The most common local beer is Stella, also considered the oldest, as it has been available since 1897. You can slo find local Heineken and Sakara, which come right after Stella in order of popularity.

Regarding local wine, you can find a variety of white, rose, and red wine with the most common being Omar Khayam, Grand Marquis, and Ayam.

Egyptian Beer and wine compete internationally as of taste and quality, and much cheaper than international brands. Local Egyptian spirits like Whiskey, Rum and Vodka are not widely liked by many, so it’s preferred to drink international imported brands available in hotels and touristic areas.

You can buy imported alcohol only from the airport duty free shops, within 48 hours of arrival, where you are allowed 4 one liter bottles if you choose to buy right upon landing, or 3 bottles if you skip the first day.

Is it safe to drink from the tap water in Egypt?

The tap water in Egypt is over chlorinated, and may cause some health problems like diarrhea, if you are not used to it.

We recommend mineral drinking water bottles and avoiding drinking tap water anywhere around the country.

Bottles are available everywhere, and are very cheap. Also note that most places/restaurants do not serve tap water, but instead they use mineral drinking water.

Some Essential Information About Egypt

Many people from all over the world have Egypt on their travel bucket list, yet many people are still not completely sure when it is the best time for their Egyptian adventure. We will  recommend the best locations for each season when you visit Egypt and the pros and cons of each one.

The long-awaited answer is that there is no ‘best time’ to visit Egypt. The land of the Nile is blessed with moderate weather, clear and sunny skies for most of the year.

Summer from June to September, Egypt experiences its hottest weather. Temperatures can go well over 40 degrees Celsius in Cairo and other destinations. If you’re planning on visiting Egypt in the summer, stay away from the south of the country with flaming hot summers and record-high temperatures. The best place to go in Egypt during the summer is the vibrant resort cities along the coast of the mediterranean sea, including the famous city of Alexandria and specifically the north coast, which is the ultimate summer getaway where you can enjoy the crystal clear waters, white-sand beaches, and cooler climate.

Other summer hotspots include the Red Sea coastal cities like Hurghada, Dahab, Gouna, Sharm El-sheikh, Ras Sudr, and Marsa Alam. Although a little warmer than the mediterranean side, here is where you will find the best in the World diving and snorkeling spots.  They are also known for beach activities during the hot mornings, like kite surfing, paddle boarding, and other water sports.

Winter in Egypt is pretty moderate, especially relative to the harsh and freezing winters experienced by many parts in the world. Winter in Egypt is the best time to explore the Southern cities like Luxor and Aswan, or take a magical cruise along the legendary Nile River. Southern Egypt hosts continuous sunlight, and very warm winters especially during the afternoon. However, it can get pretty chilly in the early morning or late night. We recommend grabbing comfy jackets and scarves for the cool morning and nights.

Best places to visit during the winter is definitely the southern part of Egypt (Upper Egypt), particularly Luxor and Aswan. This is by far the most recommended, all around best choice for anyone who wants to explore the historical attractions and the priceless gems Ancient Egyptians left to amaze everyone with.

The best way to visit both locations and get the most out of your trip is by booking a Nile Cruise. There are many 5 star floating hotel cruisers to choose from. You can opt for a 3, 4, or 7 night cruises where you will have breakfast overlooking the beautiful nile river, visit the highlights of both cities in the morning on professionally guided tours, get a glimpse of the city in the evening, and sleep in your nile-view room while sailing the longest river in Africa.

The cruise starts from Luxor or Aswan, depending on the schedule and your requested departure date. The usual route is booking a flight from Cairo to the embarkation city and returning from the other, using one round trip flight ticket.

The peak travel season in Egypt runs from October to May, and that’s when most tourist sites get busy with tourists flocking from every corner of the world. The season mostly covers autumn and winter. If you don’t mind a little heat, you can enjoy a crowd-free trip during the off-season times of the year, especially in mid-summer. Traveling during the peak seasons, especially during Christmas and Easter breaks can be a little more expensive than other low seasons, but it will definitely be the best choice when finding where to spend your vacation.

If you’re interested in knowing more and planning your trip to Egypt, get in touch with us now and we’ll reach back with all the details you might need!

Egypt is a very unique destination that caught the interest and curiosity of people from all over the globe, who are eager to visit and explore the historical nation. Despite the fact that Egypt is generally a very safe destinations, and that Egyptians are some of the friendliest people in the world, there are some things you should know while visiting Egypt, to ensure getting the most comfortable and memorable  experience.

It’s recommended not to discuss politics and religion with anyone you don’t know, as these subjects are often very sensitive to some people. Instead, when talking to strangers, you can discuss the local culture, history, and other interesting topics.

Egyptians love hosting tourists from all around the world, and will try to help as much as they can in order for you to get the best experience. Most of Egyptian locals benefit from tourism in one way or another, whether directly or indirectly.

Your tour guide is usually the go-to person when you have any sensitive question, as they know the traditions quite well, and will be able to answer it in a very informative way.

When visiting mosques and churches, make sure you dress modestly, are not wearing shorts or revealing clothes and sometimes a head scarf to wear inside is a nice gesture of respect to the place of worship.

In various visits, you might come across street souvenirs/gifts sellers. If you are not willing to buy something, it’s okay to ignore the sellers. If you decide to consider the merchandise, your tour guide will be able to help you bargain the prices and make sure you are not overpaying for it.

Tipping “Baksheesh” in Egypt is a very acceptable way of showing gratitude to an offered service. Make sure you are carrying small change in Egyptian Pounds. Asking your guide about what a reasonable amount to tip is recommended, as it differs depending on the service.

Essential words in Arabic:

  • Ahlan wa sahlan (Welcome)
  • Shokran (Thank You)
  • Sabah el kheir (Good Morning)
  • Baksheesh (Tip)
  • Ma`a el salama (Good Bye)
  • Bokra (Tomorrow) – Ennaharda (Today)
  • Kolo Tamam (All Good/OK)
  • Feloos ( Money )
  • Ana / Enta (Me/You)
  • Insha’allah (If God wills)
  • Kahwwa (Coffee)
  • Labban (Milk)
  • Helw (Beautiful/Nice)

Egyptian Food

We invite you to try the delicious typical dishes of Egypt, such as: koshari (lentil and rice dish), mahshi (stuffed vegetables), falafael (taameya), and fuul (beans). When it comes to fruit, Egypt is a paradise of fragrant and tasty fruits. Don’t forget to taste the guavas, dates, figs, and large variety of juicy mangos!

Most hotels serve local dishes. The typical Egyptian foods are rice, pita bread (aysh) and fava beans. Special dishes include roasted ground lamb like kebab, vegetable casserole, and stuffed, grilled pigeon. Desserts like Baklava and Basbousa are local favorites. Italian, French and Indian cuisine can be found in hotels and restaurants. Locally brewed beer (stella and Sakkara) and bottled sodas may be found throughout the country. Tea with fresh mint is also a well known drink after a good meal, make sure to try it out!

Israel-Gaza latest: Israel explains why troops withdrawn from southern Gaza | War latest

Today marks six months since the 7 October attacks by Hamas that left more than 1,100 Israelis dead and prompted Israel's ongoing military operation in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 people. We'll be bringing you updates on this throughout the day.

A grieving father who lost his son when Israeli air strikes killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers has given a clear message to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken - killings by Israel in Gaza must end.

John Flickinger told Mr Blinken the US needs to use its power and leverage over its closest Middle East ally to make that happen.

Mr Flickinger's 33-year-old son Jacob was among the humanitarian workers killed in the drone strikes earlier this week.

"If the United States threatened to suspend aid to Israel, maybe my son would be alive today," Mr Flickinger told Associated Press.

"I'm hopeful that this is the last straw, that the United States will suspend aid and will take meaningful action to leverage change in the way Israel is conducting this war," he added.

In addition to Jacob Flickinger, three British nationals, an Australian, a Polish national and a Palestinian were killed in the strikes.

Israeli officials have called the drone strikes a mistake, and the military has said it dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others for their roles.

Today marks six months since Hamas launched its 7 October attacks on Israel.

With frustration growing in Israel, deaths rising in Gaza and a humanitarian crisis continuing to grow, many have been calling for a ceasefire deal to be struck.

Around 130 hostages are still believed to be in Gaza  - about a quarter of whom Israel says are dead.

Here our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall takes a look at some of the key moments in the conflict so far...

Israel will hold a military exercise tomorrow morning, the country's military has announced.

In a post on X, the Israel Defence Forces says the drill will be held in the northern coastal strip and the Galilee area - a region close to the Lebanon and Syria border.

It adds that the "lively movement of vessels, aircraft and security forces" will be felt in the area and is part of the "IDF's readiness for combat in the various sectors".

"There is no fear of a security incident," it says.

It comes after the military said earlier today that it has completed another phase in preparing for a possible war on its northern front with Lebanon and Syria.

The United States and its allies have dropped humanitarian aid into the isolated northern part of Gaza, where the United Nations and aid groups have warned famine is imminent.

The US Central Command said it dropped the packages alongside the Royal Jordanian Air Force.

It said the delivery will provide "essential relief to civilians in Gaza affected by the ongoing conflict".

"The combined joint operation included Jordanian-provided food and three US Air Force C-130 aircraft," it added.

"The US C-130s dropped over 38,000 meal equivalents, providing life-saving humanitarian assistance in northern Gaza."

To date, the US has dropped 739 tons of humanitarian assistance in the region.

The British armed forces have dropped 40 tonnes of aid into Gaza in recent weeks to tackle the bottleneck in supplies reaching Palestinians.

The five air drops have seen supplies including water, flour and baby formula parachuted into the territory.

Thousands of Israelis have rallied outside the parliament in Jerusalem, calling for a "hostage deal" to be reached.

The demonstration, organised by the families of the hostages, also marks six months to the day since they were captured by Hamas.

The six-month mark has been met with growing frustration in Israel, where anti-government protests have swelled and anger has mounted, with more than 100 hostages still being held in Gaza.

"People are waiting for their children for their parents, for their sisters and their brothers and our government doesn't seem to care," said Talia Ezrahi who attended the protest with her daughter.

Negotiations for a ceasefire in exchange for the release of the hostages have resumed in Cairo today.

Iraq has agreed to send 10 million litres of fuel to Gaza, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has announced.

Iraq also agreed to accept wounded Palestinians into the country from the besieged region and provide them treatment.

The lack of fuel in the strip has crippled hospitals, water systems, bakeries and relief operations.

Israel imposed a strict blockade on all goods entering Gaza when it launched its military campaign in the region.

Since then, supplies have dwindled and only a fraction of the amount of fuel needed has been allowed in.

By Mark Stone, US correspondent

As we mark six months of the most brutal of conflicts in Gaza, a few thoughts.

First, we're at the end of the most consequential of weeks in this bloody six-month period.

I say it with a great deal of hesitation and perhaps some naivety (given how many moments of hope have come and gone) but maybe there is a little sense of momentum right now.

After the killing of foreign aid workers, it's been a week in which American influence seemed finally to have a humanitarian impact.

After a call between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu, the Israeli government announced it would open Ashdod port for the delivery of aid.

It also said a key northern border crossing to Gaza, Erez, would open.

Then came the announcement that Israeli troops would pull out of southern Gaza, leaving just one battalion inside the strip.

The White House spokesman, John Kirby, says this is a temporary "rest and refit" for the soldiers but also says he doesn't believe it's the prelude to a new offensive.

Some reporting from Israel suggests the IDF might be shifting to targeted anti-terror operations over large ground offensives.

Israeli negotiators have also gone back to the table in Cairo, reportedly with a new mandate for hostage/ceasefire talks. The CIA director, the prime minister of Qatar and the Egyptian spy boss are also there.

Could all this amount to a moment for the guns to fall silent, the hostages to come home and a flood of aid to get in?

Well, many of us have wondered this before over the past six months, and we've been wrong.

My second observation? Well, in all of this, a key piece of the path to peace is still totally absent. Who will have authority in Gaza?

Who governs Gaza? A UN blue beret force? An Arab peacekeeping mission? Palestinian leaders? But which ones?

Six months of war and the 'day after' is, just maybe, getting closer.

But no one has any sense of what it looks like. That represents a profound political and damning failure of American leadership.

The number of people killed in Gaza has been underestimated and there are still thousands of people unaccounted for, the ambassador of the State of Palestine to the UK has said.

The Hamas-led health ministry has reported more than 33,000 people have been killed in the region during the conflict so far, but Husam Zomlot told Sky News the figure was a "big underestimation".

"We are waiting for the worst because there are thousands of people who are still under the rubble unaccounted for. There are thousands who are missing, so this in the absolute minimum number," he said.

While some Israeli officials have sought to cast doubt on fatality figures, a number of independent groups say they have proved to be largely reliable and broadly in line with those later produced by the UN and Israel itself.

Examination of data from previous Gaza conflicts - the Hamas-run health ministry's counts compared with the post-war United Nations analysis - shows that the initial data is largely accurate with, at most, a 10-12% discrepancy.

"We are always interrogated, always our story is disputed," Mr Zomlot added.

Israel's military can handle any Iranian threat, its chief has said.

Speaking in a televised address, Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi said his forces can "act forcefully" against the country.

"The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) can handle Iran," he said.

"We can act forcefully against Iran in places near and far. We are cooperating with the United States and with strategic partners in the region," he added.

It comes after a top Iranian military adviser warned Israel that none of its embassies are safe following a strike in Damascus last week.

The strike, which has been widely blamed on Israel, killed 12 people, including two elite Iranian generals.

Israel has been preparing for an Iranian response to the strike without directly acknowledging its involvement.

As we have been reporting throughout the day, Israel has withdrawn almost all its troops from southern Gaza.

The move, which came hours before ceasefire talks were expected, has sparked questions over what Israel is planning to do next.

The country's defence minister Yoav Gallant has said the troops withdrew to prepare for future operations - including in the southern Gaza city, Rafah.

"The forces are exiting and preparing for their next missions, we saw examples of such missions in the Shifa operation, and also of their coming mission in the Rafah area," Mr Gallant said.

Rafah shelters some 1.4 million people - more than half of Gaza's population.

The prospect of an offensive there has raised global alarm, including from the US, which has demanded to see a credible plan to protect civilians.
