Excellent Introduction to the Baltimore Beer Scene

"It was a great tour to get a feel for the beer culture in Baltimore. The breweries and brewpubs showcased were fantastic, and there wasn't a single beer I disliked. Our guide Ryan was friendly, talkative, and informative, and also gave us enough space for our motley group to get to know each other as the tour went on."

Beer in Baltimore

"Fun, delicious and informative tour of Baltimore breweries. The tour guide was great. The tour time at each brewery's was spot on. Each brewery was unique and well worth a visit & taste. Baltimore has many breweries popping up in many of the unusual neighborhoods. I've lived here for years and still learned more about this wonderful town."

Great Addition to the Baltimore Beer Scene

"Our guide, Ryan, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Great opportunity to explore the local craft beer scene and have a great, hassle free time doing it."

Flying Dog Brewery

Good people drink good beer.

Flying Dog Brewery is located at 4607 Wedgewood Boulevard in Frederick, Maryland. It is a brewery without pretense and with a rebellious flare that came onto the scene ahead of its time in 1990. It is the largest brewery in Maryland, established by physicist George Stranahan and his co-founding partner Richard McIntyre.

While we don’t currently offer it as one of our stops, Flying Dog is one of Baltimore’s must-see breweries. And don’t just take it from us, take it from Hunter S. Thompson, who frequented the brewpub, and shared a close bond with his dear friend (and ex-landlord) George. In fact, it was Hunter who introduced George to Ralph Steadman, the incredible artist known for his illustrations on Thompson’s books, and Flying Dog’s beer labels!

Literary history isn’t the only thing Flying Dog is rich in. They brew delicious craft beer! Pay them a visit and kick things off with their staple Raging Bitch, a Belgian IPA made with caramel malts and Warrior, Columbus, and Amarillo hops. It’s sweet, fluffy and full bodied, with a grapefruit peel aroma, fruity notes from the Belgian yeast, and is available year-round.

Another popular brew that shares the spotlight is The Truth, a piercing imperial IPA with notes of citrus and pit fruit. It’s a drinkable brew with a bitterness that’s balanced with sweetness. Truthfully, this is one of the beers you have to try when you visit their taproom.

And in addition to their IPAs, they also make incredible dark beers, like the Barrel-Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter or the Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout. The Gonzo (a tribute to Thompson), will smack you down with its richness. This pitch-black porter will treat your tastebuds with notes of vanilla, coffee, and dark chocolate. Follow it up with the brawny Kujo, dark and full of coffee flavors, with a just hint of plumb, anise, and banana. This thick and silky brew will make your trip.

In 2018, Flying Dog Brewery announced that they are hoping to join trendsetters around the continent this year in partnership with Green Leaf Medical Cannabis to release a THC-Infused Beer called Hop Chronic. They’re still working out the logistics, but this non-alcoholic IPA is hoped to be a way for those who don’t want to smoke or vape to be able to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. Be sure to follow them on social media to stay in the know about updates on Hop Chronic and other goings-on at the brewery.

Want to learn more about pairing beer and cheese? What about beer and cigars? Are you wondering about the chemistry or is it beer etiquette that you’ve got on your mind? If you’re looking to take your beer-nerd status to the next level, be sure to enroll at Flying Dog University and take a class on these topics and many others.

…Why are you still sitting there? Go visit Flying Dog Brewery! Pay them a visit and snag a seat at their tasting room or plan ahead and reserve a spot on a free tour of their establishment. Grab some grub from The Roasthouse Pub food truck waiting outside, and shop online or on-site for their iconic merch, including a variety of Ralph Steadman inspired Tee’s, hoodies, hats and more.

Flying Dog Brewery Resumes Tours

' src=

Flying Dog Brewery tours return starting July 1. Tours will be offered every Thursday and Friday from 4 to 6 pm, along with two sessions on Saturday (12 to 2 pm and 2:30 – 4:30 pm). Each intimate session will include a history of Flying Dog, an in-depth tour of the brewing facility — including the brew house, cellar, quality assurance lab, and packaging areas — as well as samplings and sensory explorations of some of the 18 draft beers available at any given time.

Flying Dog has not offered public tours since December 2009, when they placed a self-imposed hiatus on tours to focus on updating Maryland beer sampling laws. Drafting legislation and forming a coalition of other Maryland breweries, retailers and wholesalers, Flying Dog embraced its Gonzo spirit and took an active role to update some outdated laws to better reflect the climate of craft beer in the state.

Those updates unanimously passed and were signed by the Governor to go into effect July 1.

The revisions allow consumers to sample a broader range of beer styles and enable them to purchase beer “to go” after a tour. Patrons can now purchase up to 288 ounces of beer (equivalent to four 6-packs) to be consumed off premise.

Tour participants can also pay $5 at the beginning of their tour to keep the commemorative tasting glass. The brewery’s gift shop will also be open with a full range of Flying Dog merchandise available for purchase.

Flying Dog will begin taking reservations for tours on June 16. Reservations can be made by calling Flying Dog Brewery at 301-694-7899 Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. To limit long waiting lists, reservations will only be accepted up to six weeks in advance.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:

In 1983, a series of events in the Himalayas involving under prepared hikers, an unfaithful Sherpa, a scared-shitless donkey, and quickly consumed contraband led to the creation of the Flying Dog philosophy.

That's right, philosophy. It wasn't until 1990 that beer came into the picture.

From a brewpub in Aspen, Colorado to a full-fledged Denver brewery, and then to a state-of-the-art brewing facility in Frederick, Maryland, Flying Dog stands for not only extraordinary beer, but also for standing tall, doing great things, and not letting anyone make you eat shit.

For the past 20 years, we've done just that. We produce world-class craft beers and continue to push the envelope with experimental brews and limited-edition one-offs. All the while, we continuously pay homage to our Gonzo Godfathers - George Stranahan, Hunter S. Thompson, and Ralph Steadman.

Most importantly, we have a lot of fun doing it. And we never take ourselves too seriously.

Pet-Friendly Travel Options: Your Complete Guide

flying dog tours

We love travelling. Whether it’s taking off somewhere far, far away for a month or simply sneaking away for a long weekend, travel unlocks all kinds of adventures. And we don’t only travel for pleasure and we aren’t always travelling alone. Sometimes we’re boarding a plane or taking a long road trip because we’re moving or taking a gap year, and that means our furry friends are coming along with us.

But travel can be taxing, tiring, and generally stressful and that’s without a dog, cat, or iguana in tow! So let’s make it simple. We’ve scoured the web, asked our experienced friends, and even travelled with pets ourselves to put together this comprehensive guide to your pet-friendly travel options!

Booking accommodation with a pet

So whether your trip is for business or pleasure, it will most likely include a stay overnight in a hotel, motel or lodge. But are you allowed to bring your pet? And if you are, what are the exact circumstances or conditions you’ll need to abide by?

Luckily more and more places are starting to accommodate pets but depending on where you’re travelling the rules will all be different. Not everyone defines “pet-friendly” under the same conditions! So here’s a list of questions we suggest asking your accommodation providers before you book:

A man and his dog in a car

  • What type of rooms are available to pet owners? The rooms that allow pets are typically on the main floor with easy access to the outdoors. If you were planning to book a fancier room, they may not be able to welcome your dog or cat.
  • What types, sizes, and amounts of pets are allowed? Accommodations that allow dogs may not necessarily allow other pets, including cats. Others permit pets under a certain size and may restrict the number of pets per room.
  • Are their special rules or restrictions that apply to pets? Your hotel might request that pets stay off the furniture and out of certain common areas like beaches or outdoor dining areas. Many will not permit pets to be left unattended in rooms, even for short periods of time.
  • Are there any services available for pets? Plan to sightsee but would prefer to leave your friend at the hotel for a couple of hours? You can ask if your accommodation offers any pet-sitting services or knows of trustworthy local animal daycares. You can also ask if they have a list of nearby dog parks, or if they’re able to provide a water bowl and food.

How to fly with your pet

According to the Air Transport Association, over 500,000 animals are shipped via the air every year. While nearly all of these experiences go off without a hitch, there’s an undeniable truth that air travel can be tough on your pet. Which airline you choose can make a difference in how easy the journey is, so bookmark this story for later before reading on.

Read the article: The 20 Most Pet-Friendly International Airlines Ranked

A yorkie at the top of a mountain

Here are 8 steps for flying with your pet:

  • Limit the use of sedatives. Contrary to what you might be tempted to do, the veterinarians we spoke to advised against the use of sedatives and tranquillizers. If your pet is kept in the plane’s hold, these types of medications can make it feel even colder to your furry friends and put them at risk of suffering dangerous drops in temperatures.
  • Get a health certificate from your veterinarian (that includes vaccinations) . This health certificate needs to meet the specific requirements of your destination, as well as your airline. Usually, these certificates should only be obtained no more than 10 days before the flight to ensure the information is valid and up to date.
  • Enquire about quarantines . If you’re taking an international flight, check in advance if your pet will need to be quarantined upon arrival. This can also change depending on their breed so be sure to thoroughly check in advance as quarantine times can be significant.
  • Pick the right crate (and include food/water) . Use a portable kennel that meets your airline’s requirements and is well-reviewed by other travellers.
  • Book a nonstop flight . Nonstop flights are simply easier and ensure fewer things can go wrong (think delays and unexpected rerouting).
  • Feed your animal 4 hours before boarding Keep your pet happy, healthy and full by making sure they’re well-fed and hydrated fours before take-off to ensure they have time to go to the bathroom.
  • Notify the airline you’ll be flying with your pet . When booking your flight, let your airline know you will be travelling with your pet and take note of the airline’s policies and requirements for travelling with your pet. Two weeks before your flight, check with your airline again to make sure you’ve done everything you need to.
  • Put a detailed collar on your pet (and their crate) . Have your pet wear a collar that includes relevant identifying information with your address, and a friend’s address and phone number (in case of emergency), and a rabies tag if one is required.

A person hiking with their dog by the sea

While some people may question why you’re bringing your pet along with you on your relaxing holiday or gap year, many pet owners know that travelling with pets, when done right and responsibly, only strengthens the bond between the two of you – and makes your trip even better. Remember to understand your pet’s limits, though: if you notice that flying makes them especially anxious, or they have any medical issues that arise from or are worsened by travel, consider limiting how far you take them. Otherwise, get ready for the trip of a lifetime – both yours and your pet’s!
