British & Irish Lions Announce Itinerary For 2025 Australia Tour

The British & Irish Lions have today released the nine-match schedule for the 2025 tour to Australia, including three Test matches against the Wallabies.

Two years out from the tour, it has been confirmed that the eagerly-awaited Test clashes will take place on July 19, July 26 and August 2. The Tests will take place in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney respectively.

The British & Irish Lions will travel throughout Australia with games being held in some of the most impressive stadiums in world sport.

The Lions will begin the tour in Perth against the Western Force before facing fellow Australian Super Rugby Pacific sides, the Queensland Reds, the NSW Waratahs, and the ACT Brumbies.

The Lions will continue their preparation for the first Test by facing an invitational Australian and New Zealand team in a clash at the Adelaide Oval.

Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium will host the first Test on Saturday, July 19. Following this, a midweek warm-up fixture against the Melbourne Rebels will take place at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday, July 22.

The second Test will be played on Saturday, July 26 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which has a capacity of 100,000. A potential sell-out crowd at the renowned venue would be a record for a Lions Test, and also one of the highest attendances at a rugby match in history.

The final Test will be played in front of over 80,000 fans at Sydney’s Accor Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday, August 2.

A strong partnership and a common goal between the British & Irish Lions, Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship has resulted in the Lions having a two-week preparation period before the tour commences.

That gives the Lions the best chance of regaining the Series on Australian soil, a country where they enjoyed their last tour win in 2013. Further detail around pre-tour activities, including a pre-tour warm-up fixture, will be announced at a later stage.

Details on the tour schedule follow the announcement of major commercial partners for the tour, with the British & Irish Lions recently confirming global rugby brand Canterbury as official kit provider and the global insurance group Howden as official front of shirt/jersey sponsor.

Confectionery brand Cadbury’s and sportswear manufacturer Asics will continue as the Wallabies official front of shirt and kit partners.

The 2025 tour to Australia promises to be one of the most eagerly-anticipated tours in history considering the absence of fans for the 2021 tour of South Africa.

Supporters who want to be part of the greatest experience in rugby can guarantee their place for ticket-inclusive travel packages to Australia with the British & Irish Lions’ own travel company, Lions Rugby Travel .

Priority access passes are on sale now, which will ensure a priority window on packages when they become available.

Passes are fully refundable should you choose not to travel and come off your final balance when you book. To purchase passes or for more information, visit http://www.lionsrugby.com/tours.

Ben Calveley , CEO of the British & Irish Lions, commented: “We are delighted to announce the tour schedule today as we look ahead to what is to be one of the most eagerly anticipated Series in history.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank Rugby Australia for the strong level of collaboration in planning for this tour and we look forward to continuing to work with them over the next two years.

“I would also like to thank Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship, whose cooperation has resulted in the longest preparation period for a tour in recent history, which gives us the best possible chance of a Series victory. We look forward to continuing to work with our hosts and our partners to create one of the best tours ever.

“As we begin the countdown to Australia in 2025, the British & Irish Lions brand and organisation has never been stronger with a global fan base of some 14 million people, a significant following and strong level of engagement through our various digital platforms, and a wide range of commercial partners comprised of some of the biggest brands and organisations in the world.

“Our ambition is to further build upon this position and make this upcoming tour the greatest Lions tour ever, positioning it as the major global sporting event of 2025.”

lions tour 2025 matches

Ieuan Evans , Chairman of the British & Irish Lions, added: “British & Irish Lions tours are unique in the world of sport, both in terms of the ultimate challenge they represent and the cultural impact they have.

“Lions tours to Australia have always been memorable occasions, and the 2025 tour promises to be no different. I know how special it is to pull on that famous red jersey in Australia, having toured there during the 1989 tour.

“What I have learned from those special games is how important the fans are to roaring us on to victory so to be able to announce ticket package details is very exciting.

Being a part of the British & Irish Lions means being able to unite and inspire through extraordinary rugby experiences, and working closely with our host partners in Rugby Australia, we believe that we can provide an epic tour that will be a global sporting event not to be missed.”

Commenting on the announcement, Rugby Australia CEO, Phil Waugh, said: “The British & Irish Lions tour is one of the great sporting festivals – it is a real landmark of Australian and world sport.

“Rugby Australia is looking forward to welcoming back the Lions for the first time in 12 years, as well as the tens of thousands of Lions fans from the northern hemisphere.

“It is an exciting schedule of matches all around the country with the Lions taking on our Super Rugby franchises, three massive Test matches, and a marquee match in Adelaide featuring a combined invitational Australia-New Zealand side.”

The British & Irish Lions will lock horns with Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on their 2025 tour and seek to set a record crowd of 100,000 at the iconic venue.

The Lions have announced their schedule for the tour in two years’ time, which includes Tests in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, five matches against Australia’s five Super Rugby sides as well as a fixture against an invitational Australia and New Zealand combined side.

The Lions are also lining up a warm-up match before arriving in Australia - in 2021, prior to the tour of South Africa, they hosted Japan at Murrayfield - meaning the 2025 trip is set to be restored to 10 fixtures in total, as was the case in 2017.

The tour of South Africa comprised just eight matches - plus the Japan fixture - but following a historic agreement between the Lions and the Premiership clubs, the tourists will have considerable more preparation time for a bigger schedule. After the Premiership agreed to move its final forward, the Lions will have a full two weeks together and England-based players will be available from the onset.

The United Rugby Championship has traditionally been more accommodating but four years ago, with no agreement reached with the Premiership, the warm-up match against Japan took place on the same day as the Premiership final, much to the league’s frustration. Furthermore, Warren Gatland - head coach on the last three tours - has spoken of how the Premiership’s intransigence has counted against English players for selection in the past.

The British & Irish Lions chief executive, Ben Calveley, said: “I would like to thank Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship, whose cooperation has resulted in the longest preparation period for a tour in recent history, which gives us the best possible chance of a series victory.”

The first match in Australia will take place against the Western Force in Perth on 28 June with a further four quick-fire matches before the first Test in Brisbane on 19 July. The Lions will then face the Melbourne Rebels three days later and four days before the second Test at the MCG before concluding the series at Sydney’s Olympic stadium.

2025 Lions Tour to Australia

• 28 June , Lions vs Western Force, Perth (Optus Stadium)

• 2 July , Lions vs Queensland Reds, Brisbane (Suncorp Stadium)

• 5 July, Lions vs NSW Waratahs, Sydney (Allianz Stadium)

• 9 July , Lions vs ACT Brumbies, Canberra (GIO Stadium)

• 12 July , Lions vs Invitational AU & NZ, Adelaide (Adelaide Oval)

• 19 July, 1st Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Brisbane (Suncorp Stadium)

• 22 July , Lions vs Melbourne Rebels, Melbourne (Marvel Stadium)

• 26 July , 2nd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Melbourne (Melbourne Cricket Ground/MCG)

• 2 Aug , 3rd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Sydney (Accor Stadium)

The match against the Rebels allows for a bumper tour but, interestingly, there was no midweek fixture in South Africa once the 2021 series had started with Gatland insisting it caused too many problems and meant for a bloated squad. The Rebels fixture therefore raises the prospect of a situation similar to 2017 when a handful of players dubbed the Geography Six were drafted into New Zealand at short notice so that frontline players could be rested.

After playing out the 2021 tour in empty stadiums, however, the onus is on bumper ticket sales for the 2025 trip. The MCG has a capacity of 100,024 and combined with Sydney (82,000) and Brisbane (52,500), the forthcoming tour is on course to eclipse the 192,972 combined attendance who saw the Lions’ three Tests against the Wallabies in 2013.

Meanwhile, Marcus Smith has delivered England head coach Steve Borthwick a major boost by signing a new Harlequins contract amid considerable interest from France.

after newsletter promotion

Smith was out of contract in 2024 and was attracting interest from Racing 92, who are looking for a marquee fly-half signing after losing Finn Russell to Bath. Smith was thought to be exploring his options having lost his place in the England starting XV during the Six Nations but Borthwick is expected to include him in his World Cup squad.

The England head coach will also look for Smith to be a key part of his post-World Cup plans and with the Rugby Football Union digging its heels in over its ruling that players based abroad are not eligible for selection, the 24-year-old’s new deal will be welcomed by Borthwick.

“I love the club,” said Smith. “It’s been my home since the age of 14 and I want to repay the faith shown in me and help Quins win trophies.”

By contrast, wing Jack Nowell completed a move to European champions La Rochelle yesterday. The 30-year-old, capped 46 times by England, leaves Exeter after 12 years. He had already made himself unavailable for this autumn’s World Cup.

British and Irish Lions 2025 tour schedule

Who will be head coach.

The overwhelming favourite to lead the 2025 Lions tour is Ireland head coach Andy Farrell , having overseen their rise to No 1 in the world rankings going into the recent Rugby World Cup since taking over from Joe Schmidt in 2019.

Along with a Six Nations Grand Slam triumph earlier this year, Farrell guided Ireland to a first series victory away to New Zealand in their history last summer as they defeated the All Blacks 2-1. He has served as Lions defence coach on two previous tours as well.

One person who has publicly backed the former Great Britain rugby league captain to coach union's Lions team is Warren Gatland , who was in charge for the last tour of Australia 10 years ago, along with the drawn series in New Zealand in 2017 and the defeat to South Africa in 2021.

"You cannot deny what Ireland have achieved as a nation over the last few years and you are starting to see the fruition of the alignment between the Irish provinces and the union," Gatland, who ruled himself out of being in charge for a fourth tour, wrote in a recent Daily Telegraph column.

BEST MOMENTS OF THE 2013 BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS TOUR IN AUSTRALIA THUMB

"There is no doubt that Andy has done a fantastic job. Even though Ireland lost their [World Cup] quarter-final to New Zealand, it was an epic match, and it could have gone either way…Everyone always just looks at results rather than what teams have achieved and the progress they have made.

"Andy has got really good man-management skills, has huge experience in the game as a professional from a young age in rugby league and I have a huge amount of respect for him as a person and as a coach."

Who will captain the Lions?

With 2021 skipper Alun Wyn Jones having announced his retirement from Test rugby ahead of this year's World Cup, the Lions will be looking for a new captain to lead them in Australia in two years' time.

The joint favourites with the bookies at present are England second-row Maro Itoje , who was widely touted as a potential captain for the tour of South Africa, and his skipper Owen Farrell - although the latter may draw accusations of nepotism if his dad happens to be head coach.

preview image

That aside, the duo are experienced Lions tourists, with Farrell having been on three tours previously and Itoje two, so it would be no surprise to see either among the candidates to lead the team if selected.

Should Farrell be named head coach, though, it would not be a surprise to see an Irishman entrusted with that responsibility.

James Ryan has long been tipped as the man to replace the now-retired Johnny Sexton as Ireland skipper and if he does then that would seemingly put him in position as a potential Lions captain too. Conor Murray , meanwhile, stepped up in 2021 when Jones was injured, although he would be 36 by the time the 2025 tour comes around.

At the other end of the scale is Wales' Jac Morgan , who at 23 has already assumed the captaincy of his national team and shown himself to be a strong presence in the back-row, while Scotland skipper Jamie Ritchie could be in contention too. However, the fact it would be the pair's first Lions tour if selected may count against them.

What will the make-up of the squad be?

Jones is not the only member of the 2021 Lions squad who will no longer be available, with Courtney Lawes, Josh Navidi, Justin Tipuric and Stuart Hogg having all either retired from international rugby or hung up their boots altogether as well.

How many players from each of the home nations make the squad is always a bone of contention too, although Gatland's initial 37-player squad from 2021 saw a fairly even split with 11 from England, 10 from Wales, and eight each from Ireland and Scotland.

Try-scorer Brian O''Driscoll of British Lions is congratulated by team mate Rob Howley (left) during the Australia v British Lions match as part of the Lions Tour to Australia, played at the Gabba Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. Lions beatAustralia 29 - 13. \ M

Given their form over the past few years, at this point it would be no surprise to see a much stronger Irish contingent involved, with recent emerging talents like Mack Hansen and Caelan Doris likely to be among those pushing for inclusion.

How Marcus Smith progresses with England will have a bearing on whether he will be part of the Lions squad again, having been called up as injury cover for Scotland's Finn Russell - a player who would be expected to be on the plane to Australia - with just two Test caps to his name in 2021.

There are always one or two players who seemingly come from nowhere to make the squad as well, while the danger of injuries and suspension can disrupt coaches plans and end the ambitions of those eager to join the exclusive club of Lions tourists.

Lions 2025 Compensatory Picks Update

Lions are projected to be without a compensatory pick for third straight year.

  • Author: Vito Chirco

In this story:

The Detroit Lions went through the 2024 NFL Draft without a single compensatory selection, and the same is expected to be the case for the Lions in 2025.

Per Over The Cap , Detroit will be without a compensatory pick during the 2025 NFL Draft. If such occurs, it’ll mark the third straight year that Detroit will not own a comp pick.

The Lions last possessed compensatory selections in 2022, using those picks on safety Kerby Joseph, tight end James Mitchell and EDGE James Houston .

During this offseason’s qualifying portion of free agency, Detroit spent enough on the free agents it acquired to cancel out the roster losses that it suffered. The Lions were one of 17 NFL franchises to achieve that status.

As for what it takes to be the recipient of a compensatory pick, it involves balancing the average per year (APY) value of contracts signed by qualified free agents departing one's team with the APY value of free agents acquired by that same team.

The Lions had three qualified players that departed the organization in free agency:

  • OL Jonah Jackson – $17 million per year
  • C.J. Gardner-Johnson – $11M/year
  • Josh Reynolds – $4.5M/year

Meanwhile, here were the four qualifying free agents added by the Lions :

  • OL Kevin Zeitler – $6 million per year
  • EDGE Marcus Davenport – $6.5M/year
  • DL D.J. Reader – $11M/year
  • CB Amik Robertson – $4.6M/year

Detroit spent $28.1 million on qualified free agents this offseason. Meanwhile, it lost $32.1 million on qualified players that left the team in free agency. This resulted in a loss of $4.4 million in net free-agent spending – not enough, though, to receive one of the league’s 32 compensatory picks.

2025 NFL draft: What picks do the Lions have in next year’s draft?

After making a couple of trades in the 2024 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions accelerated some of their 2025 draft capital by a year. The Lions and GM Brad Holmes dealt away two 2025 picks as part of trades over the draft weekend.

Most notably, the Lions traded away their third-round pick in 2025 to the New York Jets in order to select British Columbia OL Giovanni Manu with the 126th overall pick near the end of the fourth round of the 2024 draft. That was a straight deal that involved no 2024 draft assets.

The Lions later dealt a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Eagles as part of a package of picks to move up and select Utah RB Sione Vaki at No. 132 overall. Detroit had two fourth-round picks in 2025, and this pick was the one acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in the D’Andre Swift trade right after the 2023 draft.

Back at the 2023 NFL trade deadline, the Lions acquired WR Donovan Peoples-Jones from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Detroit’s sixth-round pick in 2025.

Detroit originally had an extra seventh-round pick in 2025 from the ill-fated trade with the Jets for WR Denzel Mims . However, when Mims didn’t even last a month with the Lions, the conditional picks in the deal were negated .

The Lions did pick up a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Dallas Cowboys in the trade to move up and select Terrion Arnold in the first round in 2024.
