Dive Tourism

dive tourism

What is dive tourism?

Dive tourism has been defined as individuals traveling from their usual place of residence, spending at least one night away and actively participating in one or more activities, including scuba diving, snorkelling, snuba or the use of rebreathing apparatus (Garrod and Gossling, 2008). These days, we would include free diving in the definition of dive tourism.

Dive tourism is ubiquitous and occurs all over the world but by far the majority of dive tourism happens in the less developed countries of the tropics, where the waters are warm, the sea is blue with great visibility and sea conditions are often calm. Many divers learn to dive on holiday in the tropics and dive very little on return to the temperate waters of their homes. It is often easier and more beautiful to dive in the tropics, where most of the world’s coral reefs lie. As dive tourists gain more experience, many will continue to explore other locations around the tropics on regular dive tourism holidays. There is so much to see and experience.

What our guests say?

ZuBlu were outstanding. The team took the time to understand the experience we were seeking, provided options for that experience and were patient as we iterated on the options.

Excellent. The help I received in finding the right trip for me was great, and the communication and support post-booking was spot on!

Your recommendations for both the liveaboard and island resort were spot-on.   You have our complete trust and confidence, and —-accordingly—-all our future business for dive trips.

Best holiday ever!! We had a truly exceptional trip. Very well organised by ZuBlu.

ZuBlu were very helpful. They were great in proposing the route and super helpful with the booking process. Customer service was fantastic.

ZuBlu were very helpful when other companies let us down. It's amazing to be able to chat through WhatsApp.

From late night zoom calls, advising and recommending which liveaboard offered us the best value through to helping us out when our flight was cancelled & re-organising our hotel & transfers - I would highly recommend ZuBlu to friends.

It was my first time booking through ZuBlu. Normally I would book through Liveaboard.com or PADI.com but in my opinion the ZuBlu customer service was much better.

First class from start to finish, lovely company to look after the recommendation for a trip of a lifetime which did not fail to deliver. I’ll be back again soon to ZuBlu for more bookings in the future for sure.

Honestly ZuBlu seemed too good to be true. Very patient and helpful. Found the perfect trip.

Great experience. Will highly recommend ZuBlu to all friends!!!

I would like to thank you all for a fantastic time, probably the best liveaboard I've been on so far. Thank you ZuBlu. I will definitely book with you again!

ZuBlu were exceptional at providing an array of options to match our scuba diving holiday wishes. Highly recommended and will definitely use ZuBlu again.

Whether you’re looking forward to a weekend getaway to your nearest coast or a once-in-a-lifetime vacation on the other side of the world, careful planning is the key to a successful scuba diving trip. Follow our simple steps to ensure that you choose the destination that best suits your experience and interests and ensure that everything runs smoothly once you get there.

Choosing Where to Go

We all know how important location is for every kind of adventure, and underwater ones are no exception. There are many different factors to consider when choosing your next diving destination .

First, consider your budget. How much are you willing to spend traveling to your vacation spot, and what’s the cost of day-to-day living in the destination? For example, flights to Thailand from the United States are more expensive than a quick jaunt down to the Caribbean. Still, accommodation, food, dive equipment rentals, boat charters, and dive courses are considerably cheaper. For this reason, be sure to consider every expense when making a decision based on cost.

Next, decide how long you want to spend on your next diving adventure. If the answer is just a few days, that obviously limits your options no matter the size of your budget. When you can take time off is also important. If you are restricted to a certain time of year, you’ll want to look at the dive destinations that offer the best weather and water conditions at that time. Many popular locations (especially tropical ones) are very seasonal when it comes to prime diving time.

Dive Conditions

If your options haven’t already been narrowed down by budget and timing, the next factor to consider is the kind of diving you would like to do. Do you prefer balmy water temperatures and crystal clear visibility for underwater photography ? Are you aching to try your hand at ice diving? Altitude diving? Or maybe you want to explore historic wrecks? Certain bucket-list marine animals are only found in specific locations. The type of diving that you want to do will impact your destination options. Your skill level can also affect your options. Some dive destinations are notorious for deep dive sites and strong currents, making them off-limits to beginner divers.

Specific Dive Destinations

Need some inspiration? We've rounded up some of the best dive destinations for specific interests.

Beginner Diving

  • Florida Keys , U.S.: The Florida Keys stand out for the beginner-friendly conditions (including warm water temperatures, great visibility, and limited current) and abundance of rewarding shallow sites perfect for open water training.
  • Koh Tao , Thailand: Koh Tao is also well-suited to beginner divers in forgiving conditions and a wealth of shallow yet beautiful dive sites. It also has many dive centers to choose from and some of the cheapest rates in the world for entry-level scuba courses.
  • Cozumel, Mexico: Cozumel spoils beginner divers with various dive sites within the required depth limit, all of them teeming with marine life. Courses are affordable, and there are also more challenging sites for those that want to progress onto an advanced course.

Wreck Diving

  • Chuuk Lagoon, Micronesia: This lagoon was used as a Japanese naval base during World War II. In 1943, Operation Hailstone was launched by Americans, sending more than 50 ships and 250 planes to a watery grave.
  • Graveyard of the Atlantic, U.S.: This stretch of treacherous North Carolina coastline is named for the more than 1,000 shipwrecks found between Currituck Beach and Cape Fear.
  • Coron Bay, Philippines: Coron Bay is the site of another sunken Japanese supply fleet sent to the bottom during a bombing attack in 1944.

Shark Diving

  • Tiger Beach, The Bahamas: Tiger Beach is a famous underwater amphitheater defined by its white sand floor, crystal clear visibility, and up-close shark encounters. Top species include tiger sharks, giant hammerheads, and Caribbean reef sharks.
  • Aliwal Shoal, South Africa: Enjoy baited shark dives with oceanic blacktip sharks, with other species (ranging from duskies to bull sharks and great whites) often coming to visit. Sandtiger sharks are spotted on the reef in the winter months.
  • Beqa Lagoon, Fiji: Beqa Lagoon is home to eight different shark species. It is most famous for close encounters with super-sized bull sharks, many of which gather to gestate in the lagoon's warm, clear waters.

Muck Diving

  • Mabul, Malaysia: This dive destination off the coast of Borneo famous for its muck diving opportunities. Expect an astonishing variety of macro critters, from ribbon eels and mandarin fish to tiny pygmy seahorses.
  • Lembeh, Indonesia: This is a renowned macro photographer's destination, thanks to its black volcanic sand, which provides the perfect backdrop for many colorful macro species.

Temperate Diving

  • Silfra Fissure, Iceland: Located in Thingvellir National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Silfra Fissure is the place to visit if you've ever wanted to dive between two tectonic plates in the world's clearest glacial meltwater.
  • Channel Islands , U.S.: This national park offers fantastic opportunities for boat-based diving amongst giant kelp forests, where cold-water species including sea lions and bat rays thrive.
  • Scapa Flow, Scotland: This is the ultimate wreck-diving destination for drysuit divers. At the end of the First World War, 74 German naval ships were intentionally scuttled here to prevent them from passing into British hands.

Planning and Preparing for Your Trip

Once you have decided on your dream destination, there are many elements to consider in the planning phase. First are the practicalities: How are you going to get there? If you’ll be flying, is there an airline that stands out for its generous luggage allowance (so that you can pack more scuba gear without worrying about overweight fees)? If driving is possible, how long will it take? Will you need to plan overnight stops along the way? Do you need any special paperwork for border crossings?

The next step is to book your accommodation. It often makes sense to choose a hotel with an attached dive center or a hotel that offers a shuttle service to a nearby dive shop. Alternatively, consider combining your diving and sleeping even more seamlessly with a liveaboard dive trip . These are particularly popular (and often quite economical) in Egypt, Thailand, and The Bahamas. You’ll be able to fit in more dive time and can enjoy the luxury of living, dining, and sleeping on the boat in between underwater sessions.

If you plan to take your own gear with you, you’ll need to make sure that everything is working properly. That means checking the seals and valves on your buoyancy control device (BCD), ensuring your low-pressure inflator hose connects securely, having your regulators serviced, and checking the straps on your mask and fins. Taking a camera with you? Charge your batteries, grease your O-rings, and be sure there’s plenty of space on the memory card. If you plan on renting equipment, make sure you know where you’ll be renting from and consider booking the correct sizes in advance.

Lastly, don’t forget the paperwork. In addition to flight tickets, proof of accommodation, and proof of transfer reservations, be sure to check whether you need a visa for your destination. Do this well in advance because although some countries allow you to purchase a visa on arrival, others may require you to apply at an embassy or consulate in your home country. Some destinations (especially those within a national park or marine protected area) also require you to purchase a dive permit, while others require proof of certain vaccinations.

Choosing a Tour Company or Dive Center

Unless you have all of your own gear, a buddy to dive with, sufficient knowledge of your intended dive site, and a way to get to it independently, you’re going to need the services of a dive center, liveaboard, or dedicated diving tour company. Choose the right one, and you should be able to arrange dive courses, fun dives, equipment rental, and transport as required. But how do you know which is the best one for you?

The first step is usually to narrow centers down to those affiliated with your chosen training organization (i.e., PADI, SSI, NAUI, or one of the other main programs). This is true whether you’re already certified or planning to become so. This way, you can be sure that your qualification will be accepted and that the instructors and/or dive guides dive according to the practices you’re familiar with. Next, compare pricing, availability for your chosen dates, and the diversity of courses, dive sites, and specialty diving experiences offered.

Finally, it’s an excellent idea to check out the experience of previous guests by reading reviews. That way, you’ll be able to read up-to-date opinions on crucial elements such as customer service (including the competency of the center’s instructors, the knowledge and enthusiasm of its dive guides, and the friendliness of its shop-based staff). You’ll also be able to find out more about the quality of the dive gear available to rent, how convenient the shop is for reaching the dive sites, and more.

Important Safety Considerations

A scuba diving trip should be memorable for all the right reasons, which is why it’s important to consider your safety both on land and in the water.

  • Once you have chosen a dive destination, be sure to check with your doctor whether you will require any vaccinations. For some countries, proof of certain vaccinations is an entry requirement; it’s simply the sensible thing to do for others. If you’re headed to a malaria area , enquire about the safest prophylactics to use while diving.
  • For mosquito-borne diseases that can’t be medicated against, wearing insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing is the best way to avoid infection. You should also determine whether the local tap water is safe to drink and if any specific foods are best avoided. Don’t forget to stock up on any prescription medications and to carry a doctor’s letter to prevent any issues at customs. If you have any preexisting or temporary medical conditions that could affect your ability to dive safely, make sure to get a doctor’s written approval to dive before departure.
  • Before you book your trip, check whether there are any travel advisories in place for your destination. These are issued for everything from health concerns to terrorism and often warn against regions or cities that are particularly unsafe. Always book accommodation in a safe neighborhood, keep your cash in several different, well-concealed stashes, and make copies of your passport and visa before traveling.
  • Travel insurance is essential, as is checking that your policy covers you for diving specifically. Look at taking out insurance with the Divers Alert Network (DAN) for the most comprehensive coverage. Other diving-related safety precautions include enrolling in a refresher course to ensure that life-saving skills (from gear maintenance to safe ascent rates and air supply management) are foremost in your mind.

Dive tourism is Philippine’s ace in the back pocket

With more than 300 dive sites, some of which are recognised globally, dive tourism can boost the industry’s recovery.

Although the Philippines’ tourism is still close to foreign travellers, the local destinations are open to domestic tourists following the strict implementation of COVID-19 protocols. As the pandemic fuelled the rising trend of outdoor experiences, the Philippines is in the best position for global tourism.

“The Philippines as an archipelago, at the centre of the coral triangle, is home to biologically diverse marine and aquatic resources. We are proud to have a dive destination that has it all,” DOT Secretary Puyat said in the recently concluded Dive Philippines webinar series.

dive tourism

Some of the notable dive sites in the Philippines are the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site Tubbataha Reef Natural Park in Palawan, Apo Reef Natural Park in Occidental Mindoro, Malapascua Island in Cebu, Anilao dive sites in Batangas, and the Verde Island Passage in Puerto Galera.

Attesting to its underwater beauty, the Philippines won as the World’s Leading Dive Destination in the 27th World Travel Awards.

“It is no wonder that diving and marine sports are considered one of our country’s top tourism products and attractions. Most of the flourishing tourism activities available in the country today are water-based – from adventure to eco-tourism activities such as snorkeling, diving, and surfing,” Puyat said.

Halgerda Batangas nudibranch laying eggs in Anilao, Batangas

Anilao diving in Batangas , known as the Nudibranch Capital of the Philippines, is the closest underwater haven from Metro Manila . It usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours by car from Manila to get among the various entry points in Anilao, including some of the best Batangas beaches . It features a cove so huge that it almost has 60 (48 are known to most) dive sites for anyone to play in.

Technically, Anilao represents two barangays or towns (Anilao Proper and Anilao East) in the municipality of Mabini, Batangas. Since Anilao is where the seaport was located and the only available entry point for scuba diving 40 years ago, it became the famous term to represent all dive sites found in Mabini, Tingloy, and Bauan.

Today, the coastline has been populated by different resorts that you can relax in or be your home base for diving trips.

There are three major things that you could look into when joining an Anilao diving tour : discover the tiny exotic creatures it hides, immerse yourself in its flourishing biodiversity, or blackwater diving.

Anilao diving spots are best known for nudibranchs, the tiny exotic creatures it hides in its waters. Of over 800 identified nudibranchs around the world, there are 600 that can be found in Anilao.

  • Browse our collection of Batangas tours

Muck diving is another interesting way to find nudibranchs, specifically in places like Anilao Pier, Basura, and Secret Bay, may it be in the morning or by night time. Train your eyes from the way these creatures display their camouflage.

Aside from nudibranch, you can also find various kinds of frogfish, sea moths, gurnards, wasp fishes, stonefishes, stargazers, flounders, worms, stingrays, shrimps, seahorses (specifically the pygmy seahorse), pipefish, and shrimpfish, among many others.

Get to amaze yourself among schools of fusiliers and anthias as if they were colored rain underwater in places behind.

Most dive resorts in Anilao are some of the best beginner diving Philippines  resorts perfect for scuba diving holidays for beginners . Batangas beach resorts are well versed to lead guests on a blackwater dive. Boats usually set a 33-meter line with strong lights 10 meters apart complemented with expert dive guides to give you a glimpse of creatures you probably already know, however, at their larval state.

Diver taking photos of a thresher shark in Malapascua, Cebu

Malapascua diving in Cebu is the most famous diving spot in the Philippines for the pelagic thresher sharks. Thresher sharks are typically deep-sea sharks and spend most of their time deep underwater. Take note, however, that only in Malapascua Cebu diving spots do they go shallow enough among recreational diving depths on almost a guaranteed basis for divers to see.

Off the south-eastern side of Malapascua Island is a sunken plateau called Monad Shoal where there is an abundance of cleaner wrasse fishes. Thresher sharks can get free cleaning services from these fish to remove parasites and dead tissues from their bodies. This is one of the biggest reasons why we believe these sharks are here. You can also visit some Cebu beaches while on one of the  best islands in the Philippines .

The highest chance to see the sharks is at the break of dawn. Thus, it's customary to get on the boat before sunrise, usually at 4:30 AM. As the sun rises, you'll get to see other boats coming from different directions, as if it is a race to the best buoys around Monad Shoal. It eventually leads to a race among the best front-row seats underwater.

Here are some important things you have to think about this special dive during your Cebu tour package :

The use of strobes and video lights for either photography or videography are not allowed. While it has not been proven that lights may harm the sharks' eyes, lights could possibly scare them away.

The longer you stay underwater, the better your chances to see them. Thus, the use of Nitrox is highly recommended, if you are Nitrox certified.

Around the cleaning stations underwater, where the clusters of cleaning wrasses are concentrated, you can find pre-installed ropes that indicate boundaries. You are highly encouraged to kneel, hover low, or do a fin pivot outside of these boundaries. Each dive guide from every boat will be watching all of the guests underwater to make sure these rules are well abided.

Other than the pelagic thresher celebrity sharks, there are also sightings of white tip and grey reef sharks including pelagic mantas and devil rays. These are believed to be taking advantage of the wrasse cleaning stations’ services as well.

Around the island will be sea kraits, sea horses, nudibranchs, cuttlefish, mantis shrimps, frogfish, crabs, squids, cardinalfish, and rock formations where different soft coral reefs had healthily grown.

Aside from diving, have an enjoyable walk along Malapascua beaches like Bounty Beach where you’ll find various restaurants and shops. If you love watching sunsets, the Logon Beach would give you the best scenery.

Every time I think about diving in Coron , I think of a gallery of museums, specifically of historical interest, that transports me to World War II. At 9 AM on the 24th of September in 1944, a US Navy strike force of fighters and dive bombers arrived within the airspace of Coron and Busuanga and attacked a Japanese supply fleet of up to 24 ships.

It has always been a debate among historians whether the ships were detected from the air as moving islets or whether their radio transmissions were intercepted, which eventually led to a surprise aerial attack by the US Navy. The heavy air strike lasted less than an hour, leaving a carnage of burning and sinking ships.

  • Book Coron diving packages

The vicinity of Sangat Island in Coron has the largest concentration of sunken ships; 11 of them are within recreational scuba diving depths of 25 to 40 meters. The shipwrecks are in great condition and highly recommended among Advanced scuba divers to penetrate during Coron tour packages .

For non-divers, snorkeling can also give you a glimpse of some of these shipwrecks when island hopping in Coron .

Scuba diver exploring World War II shipwreck in Coron, Palawan

Things to look out for during your diving adventure in Coron tours include a three-barrelled anti-aircraft gun by the sandy area near the base of the huge crane and the crane’s intact machinery and gears. It also has a huge rip at the stern which divers can use to penetrate it.

Other interesting armaments you can see during a Coron wreck diving would include gun placements pointing to the bottom near the mast, swivel mounts for bigger guns, and an artillery shell jammed inside its mechanism. Make your way from stem to stern among endless labyrinths until you make it to the engine room where you will find its four engines.

Each shipwreck has its secret to share. Kogyo Maru, a Navy Auxiliary Cargo Supply Ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy, reveals an encrusted tractor with its recognizable metal wheels and air compressor.

Irako Maru, a Refrigeration/Provision Store ship show special access to its galley (kitchen). Morozan Maru features her huge boilers and almost endless corridors. The rest of the shipwrecks have their own story to tell.

Around 400 meters off the eastern corner of San Agapito is Verde Island Passage , also known as San Agapito dive site. It is accessible both from Puerto Galera and Anilao, Batangas, by a motorized boat.

The San Agapito dive site looks like a seamount that has three peaks with one always peeking out of the water approximately 2 meters high from the surface depending on the tides. The third pinnacle lies 18 meters deep. The island itself sits at the heart of the famous Verde Island Passage, a strait around 1.14 million hectares.

The strait lies between Luzon and Mindoro and has been known as the "Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity." It connects South China Sea with the Tayabas Bay and Sibuyan Sea.

The usual flow of current in this part of the Verde Island Passage is extremely strong. Thus, only seasoned advanced scuba divers can dive here. The direction of its current would determine whether you could dive either the sea mount's east or west side.

  • Browse our Puerto Galera tour packages

As most would say, San Agapito diving is somewhat a small fraction of how Tubbataha Reefs National Park in Palawan would look like without the sharks and the rays. Its wall stretches 70 meters deep. As you go down, you will find huge coral fans. There are juvenile sea turtles that simply do their round of eating, breaching, swimming, and sleeping on a periodical basis.

You will also find a school of jacks and mackerels just like in normal scuba diving tour packages , including families of big tunas and groupers lurking around.

The best spectacle I always look forward to seeing on this dive is the massive display of swimming red-orange colored anthias. It's as if it was raining fish all over you! The visibility can be farther than 30 meters at times so be careful when you plan your ascent to your safety stop.

It may be so clear that you think you are within your 4 meters safety stop, when you are actually still 10 meters away from the surface. When the current flows are strong, it is recommended that you spend your safety stop near the closest peak and plan your ascent in the blue.

Make sure you have your long safety balloon with you because you are within one of the busiest sea lanes in the country. Check out our diving in Puerto Galera guide to learn more and browse our Puerto Galera tours for fun activities to add in your itinerary.

On the southeastern part of Negros Oriental near Dumaguete is a small coastal town called Dauin. It is accessible via Sibulan Airport, also called Dumaguete Airport. Along its shores are 18 popular dive sites that are known for muck diving in the Philippines. Some of the critters found when diving in Dumaguete are rare to find.

If you are not familiar with muck diving, it simply means that most of the area happens to be mostly sandy. However, you have to be clever enough to find these hiding critters under your nose because they exhibit amazing camouflage techniques specific to this environment. The best ones happen to be very tiny and so much harder to see.

See our popular Dumaguete Tours and Activities

Make sure you have the best muck diving experience by having a local dive spotter expert with you. Macro photography makes time go faster than what you think, so please do check your air periodically.

The dive sites generally range from the shore sloping down to as deep as 30 meters. There are car wrecks, artificial reefs made out of vehicle tires, sea grass, sandy patches, and rock formations where different species reside.

Balicasag Island diving  is a must when in Panglao Island in Bohol , one of the top tourist spots in Visayas next to Boracay and Cebu. You will have to arrange Balicasag Island tours from Panglao Island to get you to Balicasag Island whether you want to simply visit its beach or go scuba diving. For a hassle-free vacation, you can book a Bohol diving package where everything is prepared for you.

Balicasag Island, a marine sanctuary and Bohol island hopping tour stop that you should include in a Bohol travel packages , is approximately 600 meters in diameter. This Bohol diving spot  is one of the best destinations when island hopping in the Philippines . There are five beautiful diving spots around it, including the Balicasag Marine Sanctuary that highlights a 200-meter drop-off.

There is also the school of barracudas. It truly is a great place to experience, especially when you get to see its visibility that could go 20 to 30 meters far depending on the season. The Black Forest, the most popular Bohol diving site, got its name from having the abundance of amazing black corals, and is a must-add to your Bohol itinerary  when diving.

It is 40 meters deep and has its share of a school of jacks and barracudas. Make sure to see the beautiful islands of Bohol with dolphin watching if you can!

Turtle Point, as the name suggests, has the most number of friendly resident sea turtles you can go diving with. Do not go rushing towards one.

Always make that slow approach to show that you mean no harm and remember never to touch any of them including any marine life. The place also has caves as deep as 60 to 75 meters deep meant for technical divers to penetrate.

Aside from having the best beaches in the Philippines found in Palawan's Coron and El Nido, this province is also home to The Tubbataha Reef.

At the southwestern part of Puerto Princesa  in Palawan, where the heart of The Coral Triangle sits, is the Philippines’ crown jewel, the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park. The word “Tubbataha” is a Samal term that means “long reef exposed at low tide.”

Tubbataha Reef diving will let you explore two huge coral atolls called the North and South Atolls plus a smaller coral structure called the Jessie Beazley Reef, found northeast of the North Atoll.

Feast your eyes among the 600 species of fish and 13 species of dolphins and whales in Tubbataha Reef. There are only two islets in the area where 100 species of birds reside and are known to be one of the remaining safe breeding habitats for seabirds in southeast Asia.

No one is allowed to step on either islets in Tubbataha nor are you allowed to use a drone unless you have clearance from the Tubbataha Management Office.

There are strict rules which guests should adhere to; using gloves, reef hooks, and pointing rods, for example, are prohibited while diving. Chasing, collecting, and feeding marine life, as well as polluting, littering, and fishing are not allowed.

Every liveaboard sets its travel to Tubbataha on a weekly basis from mid-April to mid-July, when its waters are glass flat. Beyond these months, there are no diving trips to Tubbataha. Find the best flights to Puerto Princesa airfare rates for your trip.

There is no access to any phone signal once you’re there, so don’t miss to inform your colleagues and loved ones about your trip. Some liveaboards will have communications access via satellite phones only.

In Mexico, Dive Tourism Is Worth as Much as Fishing

Researchers estimate diving and snorkeling bring in up to $725 million annually

Ilima Loomis, Hakai

Mexico Diving

Mexico’s warm waters and diverse marine ecosystems make it a popular destination for divers from around the world. But with most dive tourism operations being mom-and-pop shops scattered across the country, nobody knew just how much money dive tourism was generating each year. Now, a new study finds that Mexico’s dive tourism industry is much, much larger than previously thought—pulling in as much revenue as the country’s industrial and artisanal fishing industries combined.

“The total value is surprising—even though it’s often not a surprise for the people who are living in these places,” says Andrés Cisneros-Montemayor, a resource economist at the University of British Columbia who was not involved in the research. “But when you see all the numbers added up, you go, Wow, this is huge.”

Based on surveys, the researchers estimated the dive tourism industry generates between US $455-million and $725-million annually, comparable to revenues generated by Mexico’s fishing industries.

The finding lays the groundwork for better coordination between and advocacy by members of the dive tourism industry, and provides support for greater marine conservation in Mexico says Octavio Aburto-Oropeza, a marine biologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego who worked on the study. As Mexico’s dive tourism industry recovers from a year of shutdown during the pandemic, the study is also prompting conversations about how to better manage tourism in coastal communities.

Aburto-Oropeza has visited dive sites throughout Mexico and Latin America, diving both for research and for his hobby of underwater photography. “One day I woke up and said, ‘If dive sites generate money just by bringing in divers, why are they not protected?’” He realized that more data was needed to make the case for better management, and embarked on the study.

Mexico’s dive economy was so understudied that prior to the report there was no comprehensive listing of all the dive sites or tour operators in the country. That’s in stark contrast to the well-organized fishing industry, in which Mexico’s National Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture regularly studies and publishes reports on the status of fisheries and the industry’s annual take and revenues, notes Aburto-Oropeza.

“When you don’t see the size of your business, the probability that you will be empowered or inspired to protect these areas is minimal,” he says.

The researchers started by building Mexico’s first database of dive sites and dive tour operators, compiling 264 tour operators and 860 dive sites around the country in 2019. They divided the list into four regions: the Baja Pacific and Gulf of California, the South Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Yucatan Peninsula. They then started contacting operators one by one—often conducting surveys door to door.

The researchers also looked more closely at the business structures of the dive tour operators, and studied how they affected their communities. Around 91 percent of the dive operators were small family-run businesses, serving an average of 74 tourists weekly. The other nine percent were large businesses that served an average of 1,600 tourists per week, mainly snorkelers.

Aburto-Oropeza and his colleagues found that the kind of mass ocean tourism offered by the large businesses poses a greater risk to reefs and marine ecosystems while also offering fewer benefits to local communities. Large businesses were more likely to be owned by foreigners than Mexican nationals. And because they rely on selling large volumes of cheap snorkeling tours, rather than smaller and more costly scuba excursions, they also generate less revenue per tourist, the researchers found.

Aburto-Oropeza says the research is already having an impact in Mexico, where dive operators have taken the first steps toward organizing their industry. And while the pandemic led to major revenue losses, it’s also prompted discussion about how dive tourism can reopen in a more sustainable way, such as by managing tourism numbers to avoid overcrowding.

“The pandemic reaffirmed the importance of a more political voice for this sector,” Aburto-Oropeza says. “Some of the lessons, especially for the small towns, is how to start thinking of better ways to manage tourism, and strategies to grow in the coming years.”

2024 Tour Championship picks, odds: Expert predictions, favorites to win FedEx Cup Playoffs from betting field

Who will stand atop the pga tour this season our experts dive into all the twists and turns of the year's final event.

scottie-scheffler-xander-schauffele-2024-2-g.jpg

An incredible PGA Tour season reaches its conclusion this weekend as the 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs wrap with the final leg held at East Lake Golf Club. A simply massive $25 million winner's share on the line for whomever finishes atop the leaderboard at the 2024 Tour Championship, and that person will not only bring home a massive sum but a significant trophy as one of the top golfers of the year.

Perhaps no two players have more on the line than Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele. The former has put together a whirlwind season with six PGA Tour wins, including a Masters and Players Championship, and an Olympic gold medal chaser. The latter followed his first career major at the PGA Championship with his second two months later at The Open Championship. Both have put together simply incredible seasons to this point, and while Scheffler may be in pole position for PGA Tour Player of the Year, a win for Schauffele could tighten that race considerably.

Which of the two feats would be more impressive? Our CBS Sports experts debate just that below. You can also take a look at a FedEx Cup Playoffs primer , including the final 30 men in the field and details of what will transpire over the next 72 holes at East Lake.

Scheffler (-10) enters as the leader with Schauffele (-8) sitting two strokes back. Behind them, the top 10 in the standings entering East Lake are Hideki Matsuyama (-7), Keegan Bradley (-6), Ludvig Åberg (-5) and the foursome of Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay (-4). The rest of the top 30 are 7-10 strokes behind Scheffler with 72 holes to go.

The staggered leaderboard provides benefit to those golfers who put together sterling seasons to this point, but the advantages are not so significant that those lower on the leaderboard cannot make a run. As such, it's possible that the best performer at the Tour Championship is not atop the leaderboard once play concludes Sunday, but with so much money on the line -- the top nine will all earn $2 million or more this weekend -- every spot in the standings matters.

So, what is going to happen at East Lake? Let's take a look at a full set of predictions and picks from our CBS Sports experts as we attempt to project who will win -- and what will happen -- at the final PGA Tour event of the season.

2024 Tour Championship expert picks, predictions

Kyle Porter, senior golf writer

Winner -- Xander Schauffele (5/2): It seems fairly clear to me that Schauffele is going to win this event. He absolutely crushes at this golf course with a 3.55 true-strokes-gained mark that is nearly a shot better per round than the next best in the field (minimum eight rounds played). Plus, he's in a better mental spot than Scottie Scheffler. A Schauffele win is going to make the PGA Tour Player of the Year race more interesting as he will have won two majors and the FedEx Cup but potentially  not  earn that honor.

Sleeper -- Rory McIlroy (18-1): Absolutely destroys East Lake, and at 4 under, he's playing from a position where he's won this event before. (He chased down Scheffler from six back to start the 2022 event.) The golf has not been consistently good since the U.S. Open, but I'll take 16-1 odds that he finds something at a place he clearly loves playing and dials it in for this one week to get a victory.

Top 10 entering who will not win -- Scottie Scheffler: Is that bold enough for you? I'm just not seeing it with Scheffler. He's never won a FedEx Cup Playoff event, and he is entering off his worst week in two years last week at the BMW Championship. It's clear that he does not enjoy these playoffs, and there are too many horses behind him.

Biggest jump up leaderboard -- Tommy Fleetwood: It's a good spot for Fleetwood from which to play. He's 22nd in the standings and will start nine back of Scheffler. That should allow him to play with a ton of freedom, and he's been putting together some tremendous golf of late with three consecutive top 25s -- two of them top fives -- since a missed cut at The Open in July.

Biggest fall down leaderboard -- Keegan Bradley: Other than Scheffler, Bradley will likely experience the most significant tumble. He's risen all the way to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings, which is not commensurate with how he's been playing in 2024. While it would be a pretty incredible story for him to go out and win the FedEx Cup, it's more likely that it goes the other way.

Bigger achievement with a win -- Scheffler or Schauffele? This is a tough one, but I lean Scheffler  though neither of them have won the FedEx Cup before. An eight-win overall year with a Masters, Players, Olympic gold medal and FedEx Cup title would likely never again be matched, which is what's at stake for Scheffler this week at East Lake.

Patrick McDonald, golf writer

Winner -- Xander Schauffele (5/2):  Restoration, no restoration, it doesn't matter for Schauffele at East Lake. While the golf course will be different than years past, the bones are the same. Schauffele won in his debut as a rookie in 2017, fired the lowest score in 2020 and tied Viktor Hovland last year in the same category only to finish second in the FedEx Cup. He's the most well-rounded player in the game, and it's time for him to raise the silver at week's end.

Sleeper -- Rory McIlroy (18-1): It's tough to say what a sleeper looks like in this tournament given the staggered scoring start, but McIlroy needing to make up six strokes on Scheffler should count. Most notably is that Rory has the largest comeback in FedEx Cup Playoffs history, and he did it from exactly as many strokes behind just two years ago. The competition out in front of him this year is a bit tougher, but after coming up short at the majors -- including a heartbreaker at the U.S. Open -- and the Olympics, I would not at all be surprised to see him reign once again in Atlanta.

Top 10 entering who will not win -- Scottie Scheffler:  It's the end of the year, and I'm feeling bold, so why not? Scheffler entered the Tour Championship with the two-stroke lead the past two seasons and finished those respective tournaments runner up and in a share of sixth place. I'm not putting a ton of stock into his performance at the BMW Championship, but with an achy back, Schauffele right behind him and a distaste for this format, I could see the world No. 1 leaving East Lake 0 for 3 as the man in pole position.

Biggest jump up the leaderboard -- Billy Horschel:  Could throw Hovland here at 2 under, but let's go one stroke further with Horschel from 1 under. The 2014 FedEx Cup champion has been playing beautifully over this last month with three straight top 10s before a solid showing at the BMW Championship. His tee-to-green game has returned, and his putting is always capable of sending him over the top. He's a bubble boy for the U.S. Presidents Cup team, and Horschel would love nothing more than to leave an impression on captain Jim Furyk with his play at East Lake.

Biggest fall down the leaderboard -- Keegan Bradley:  The BMW Championship winner starts in fourth place at 6 under, but let's not be prisoners of the moment here. Bradley has had a good -- not great --- season that has featured just three top-10 finishes and two other top 20s up to this point. He doesn't have the best record at East Lake, and with players like Ludvig Åberg, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa immediately behind him, I could see him moving in the wrong direction.

Bigger achievement with a win -- Scheffler or Schauffele?  Schauffele had an unbelievable major championship season, but Scheffler has put together a historic campaign; the FedEx Cup would fit nicely on his mantle. A win would make it seven on the PGA Tour and pull him alongside the totals of Tiger Woods in 2007 and Tom Watson in 1980. And that's not counting his Olympic gold medal from Paris. Scheffler would also pull alongside Jordan Spieth and Jason Day with 13 career PGA Tour wins -- a fun little subplot.

Adam Silverstein, director of editorial

Winner -- Xander Schauffele (5/2): Scheffler has been the best player in 2024, but Schauffele is undoubtedly the hottest -- despite the fact that Scottie topped Xander in Paris at the Olympics. While East Lake may have been restored, Schauffele feels at home in Atlanta and has simply dominated this course at every opportunity. A two-shot deficit is easy enough to overcome in nine holes let alone 72, and while I have belief in others this week, there is no one I'd rather back at this juncture of the season.

Sleeper -- Viktor Hovland (66-1):  The reigning champion needs to make up two strokes per round on Scheffler; that is a lot to ask, but he has the firepower to do it. The St. Jude Championship reminded us that a player of Hovland's caliber is never that far off. Despite a middling start at the BMW Championship, the ball striking continued to shine. He arrives with seven straight rounds in the 60s under his belt at East Lake.

Top 10 entering who will not win --  Keegan Bradley:  It has been easy to root for Bradley of late, particularly if you are a fan of American golf and happened to watch "Full Swing" where you saw visual proof of his devastation not being chosen for the Ryder Cup team last year. Bradley storming to the top and winning the BMW Championship last week was immense, but his level of play has not indicated that he is someone who should be trusted to contend in consecutive weeks against this level of competition -- let alone go back to back in the final two tournaments of the season.

Biggest jump up the leaderboard -- Billy Horschel: There's a level of bias here as I always appreciate seeing my orange-and-blue brethren succeed, but it has been a tremendous close to the season for Horschel. He had an incredible run in the FedEx Cup a decade ago, and as Patrick mentioned, a potential spot in the Presidents Cup is on the line should he play the best version of his game this week. Golf is more fun when Horschel plays well even if his game is not one that gets modern fans excited.

Biggest fall down the leaderboard -- Wyndham Clark:  Though he has played well over the latter stretch of the season, Clark has not been at his best when the pressure is on this season. He missed the cut at three of four major championships and finished T56 at the U.S. Open. With a Presidents Cup bid already clinched, Clark will be playing for money alone -- that is certainly attractive, don't get it twisted, but the motivation factor is simply not the same as others in this field.

Bigger achievement with a win -- Scheffler or Schauffele? It absolutely has to be Scheffler . While Schauffele has been exceptional down the stretch of this campaign, Scheffler looked to be headed for a breakthrough season until his arrest at the PGA Championship. He's been relatively (for him) up and down since that tournament with his dominance at signature events carrying him through the year. The Olympic gold medal was a significant feather in his cap; a FedEx Cup would be like slinging a cartoonishly large bag of money over his shoulder. It would not count toward his record-setting season total, but a $25 million bonus on top of what he has already earned would be something. It would also clinch the PGA Tour Player of the Year honor he's likely already won. Seven wins on the PGA Tour has not been accomplished in 17 years.
