Pink Martini to sweep Istanbul stage as part of Europe tour

By daily sabah.

China Forbes and members of Pink Martini.

Pink Martini, a legendary band of eclectic and acoustic-oriented sounds, will meet their fans in Turkey with a unique concert that will take place at Istanbul’s Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Stage on July 26 as part of their Europe Tour.

The band has managed to draw a huge fan base in Turkey through their successful albums "Sympathique," "Hang on Little Tomato," "Hey Eugene!," "Splendor in the Grass," "Joy to the World," "1969," "A Retrospective," "Get Happy" and "Dream A Little Dream." In their latest studio album, the band included the famous Turkish song "Aşkım Bahardı" (“My Love Was the Spring”) as a pleasant surprise for their Turkish fans.

Storm Large and members of Pink Martini.

The songs of Pink Martini, who describe themselves as "music archaeologists bringing together melodies and rhythms from different corners of the world and present them in a modern form," were also featured in many TV series and films, from "La Casa De Papel" to "The West Wing" to "Desperate Housewives."

Performing the most enjoyable tracks from the love songs of the samurai to Cuban music of the 1930s, from the French chansons to Brazilian street songs, the ensemble will delight fans with the hot vocals of China Forbes and Storm Large, rich repertoires and surprises.

The tickets for the concert can be purchased through the website of biletix.

Pink Martini was founded as an orchestra in Portland in 1994 by Thomas M. Lauderdale, a Harvard graduate who studied classical piano. Lauderdale's Harvard classmate Forbes joined the ensemble in 1995.

Thomas M. Lauderdale (L), Storm Large (C) and China Forbes.

As soon as they released their debut album "Sympathique" in 1997, the band became an international phenomenon, with nominations in the categories of "Song of the Year" and "Best Breakout Artist" in France's Victoires de la Musique awards.

Their second album, "Hang on Little Tomato," in 2004, was number one on Amazon's album sales list. The group's third album, "Hey Eugene!" was included in the top 30 albums on Billboard's list of best-selling albums and became number one for the second time on the Amazon album sales list.

The ensemble, which received great interest from concert organizers in Turkey, showed their love for the country by putting the pictures they took during their Turkish tour on their "Hang on Little Tomato" album. Giving their first concert in Europe at the Cannes Film Festival, Pink Martini has been performing sold-out shows in countries like France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece and Lebanon.

Gilles

Our European Tour Director Gilles Gagnepain is the primary tour manager for Pink Martini’s three or four annual tours in Europe and the Middle East… but he also is the master of all of our complicated logistics for those tours, and has the extra responsibility of constantly exploring new touring ideas for us in different territories and at different venues overseas. Think of him as the Supervisor of the best summer camp ever. He keeps away the grizzly bears, leads the craft projects, assigns the bunks, and makes sure no one drowns. All while speaking to you in a charming hybrid of French and English. A child of the 1960s, as a student in Paris he helped to organize a grand music festival “Campus à l’Oreille”, which took place in a dozen universities, and he has loved organizing complicated events ever since. He started on the road with Pink Martini in 2005, and in 2010 founded his own tour company, Your European Stage, which organizes and produces concerts and tours for artists such as Caetano Veloso, Suzanne Vega, Isabella Rossellini, Souad Massi, Carla Bruni, and many more. We’re proud that, surrounded by such talent, he remains so dedicated to and passionate about Pink Martini!

This NAC show will be part of this globe-trotting band’s 30th Anniversary Tour, so come one, come all!

In 1994, Thomas Lauderdale was working in local politics when he saw the need for inspiring music at political fundraisers. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini to provide musical soundtracks for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, environment, education, etc.

One year later, Lauderdale called China Forbes, asking her to join Pink Martini. Their first song writing collaboration was “Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler)” which became an overnight sensation in France. Featuring more than a dozen musicians, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire throughout the world. After making its European debut in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998, the band has gone on to play with more than 50 orchestras around the world. In 2014, Pink Martini was inducted into both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.

Pink Martini has released 11 studio albums on its own independent label Heinz Records, selling over 3 million albums worldwide.

MIAC unveils dazzling lineup of fan favorites for 2024-2025 season

pink martini tour europe

As the curtain rises on a new season of the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture, prepare to be swept away by the electrifying energy of “MIAC’s Greatest Hits.”    That’s right. MIAC is bringing back some of your favs, starting Saturday, Sept. 7, with the ever-popular Aaron Tveit , Tony Award-winning luminary of both stage and screen who performed before a sell-out crowd last May at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, attracting patrons from 25 states and four foreign countries.    Best known for his work in theatre, television, and film, Tveit earned a Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle award leading the cast of the world premiere production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical.” Other Broadway credits include “Sweeney Todd,” “Wicked,” “Hairspray,” “Catch Me If You Can,” and “Next to Normal.” Television audiences know him from the beloved Apple TV+ series “Schmigadoon,” the FOX TV musical “Grease: Live,” the USA network series “Graceland,” the CBS comic thriller “Braindead,” and the CW show “Gossip Girl.” His film credits include the Oscar-winning “Les Misérables,” in which he portrayed the character Enjolras alongside Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, and Russell Crowe. Tveit has performed solo concerts across the country at notable venues such as Webster Hall, Irving Plaza, LCT American Songbook, The Belasco (L.A.), Barns at Wolf Trap D.C., and more. He will be making his debut at the Café Carlyle this June.    While Tveit’s concert is the season opener, it will also be part of The Season Soirée , MIAC’s signature event for 501 and Silver Circle members, who will receive two tickets to Tveit’s concert and a post-concert party in Trinity Green, as part of their membership package. (See more details later in press release).    Tveit’s performance is just the beginning of the 2024-2025 season’s spectacular journey through “ MIAC’s Greatest Hits .”    “Because we have chosen to feature encore performances by our patrons’ favorite entertainers, we anticipate sell-out crowds throughout the season and urge our many fans to get their tickets early,” said MIAC Artistic Director Dr. Brett D. Johnson.     Next, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, Pink Martini featuring China Forbes brings the group’s 30th anniversary tour to the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.    Featuring a dozen musicians, with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages on six continents. After making its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998, the band has gone on to play with more than 50 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2014, Pink Martini was inducted into both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. Pink Martini has released 11 studio albums on its own independent label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog), selling over three million albums worldwide.    On Thursday, Nov. 7, beloved MIAC artist  Melissa Errico returns to Mercyhurst University’s Walker Recital Hall and her favorite songwriter with an entirely new program of Sondheim songs, celebrating her new album, praised in The New York Times as “a New York house tour of thrill and heartbreak…from one of Sondheim’s deepest-hearted yet lightest-touch interpreters.”    “Sondheim in the City” is the Sondheim of smart, sophisticated New York, the Sondheim of the quick, witty, sardonic, love-seeking, and sex-driven city that he recorded and worked in through his long life. From the anthem of city busyness, “Another Hundred People,” to the bittersweet hymns of city marriage, “Sorry, Grateful” and “Good Thing Going,” with time for hardboiled surprises like “Uptown, Downtown” and surprisingly soft-centered ballads like “All That I Need” and “Dawn,” Errico will sound out New York as she rounds out her portrait of Stephen—and, as always in an Errico show, there will be smart talk from the celebrated New York Times columnist to go along with her sublime singing. Come and hear why BroadwayWorld says that Melissa Errico is “a poet, a painter, a walking work of art that lives and breathes to tell stories, and we all the lucky benefactors of her passion.”    On Wednesday, Dec. 11, “Pop Music in a Time Machine” concert act Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox brings The ‘10’ Tour to the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, celebrating the dual milestone of their 10th anniversary of touring and their 1,000th show.    When pianist Scott Bradlee started the time-twisting musical collective Postmodern Jukebox from a basement apartment in Queens, New York, an online viral success story was born—one that quickly led to sold-out shows across North America and Europe in the summer of 2014. Ten years and two billion views on their YouTube channel later, a Postmodern Jukebox show has become something of an annual musical tradition for hundreds of thousands of dedicated fans all over the world—fans that often show up dressed to the nines in their vintage best, eager to immerse themselves in the experience. Concertgoers can expect a dazzling, inspiring trip through the PMJ universe, where modern-day earworms and iconic pop hits alike are reimagined in classic genres like 1920s jazz, swing, doo-wop, and Motown, and brought to life by a cast of some of the world’s best singers, dancers, and instrumentalists. Think “The Great Gatsby” meets “Sinatra at the Sands” meets “Back! …To The Future.”    The spring season begins on Tuesday, Feb. 4, when Yamato, the Drummers of Japan , returns to Mercyhurst University with a thrilling new production, “Hito no Chikara”—The Power of Human Strength.”    Yamato is a Japanese Taiko drumming group based in Asuka-mura Nara Prefecture. On stage, they stand with more than 40 Taiko drums, each with a different character. Yamato does more than simply make their Taiko drums explode; they produce delicate music that gives the listener a palette of meticulously crafted sound. At once intense, then sad, and even comforting and comical, you’re more than a bystander when you experience Yamato. You’re engulfed in the sound of the Taiko, becoming one with the performers. The group’s newest production, “Hito no Chikara,” explores how “the power of human strength” encompasses emotions, ethics, creativity, intuition, physical limitations, and the richness of personal experiences. Committed to preserving Taiko tradition, while also adding some of their own style, the group has performed in 54 countries and for roughly eight million people.    On Saturday, March 29, legendary, multi-award-winning actress and singer—and Mercyhurst artist-in-residence— Betty Buckley returns to Mercyhurst for a concert with SiriusXM host, pianist, conductor, writer, and performer Seth Rudetsky .    Dubbed “The Voice of Broadway,” Betty Buckley helped to revolutionize modern musical theatre through her acclaimed performances in “1776,” “Pippin,” “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” “Carrie,” and “Cats,” which earned her the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She received her second Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Hesione in “Triumph of Love” and received an Olivier Award nomination for her critically acclaimed interpretation of Norma Desmond in the London production of “Sunset Boulevard,” which she repeated to more rave reviews on Broadway. Her film credits include Brian de Palma’s “Carrie,” Bruce Beresford’s “Tender Mercies,” M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” and, most recently, the Blumhouse horror film “Imaginary.” Her recent T.V. credits include “Law & Order: SVU,” “The Cleaning Lady,” and “Preacher,” and she starred for four seasons as Abby Bradford on the hit series “Eight is Enough.”    Seth Rudetsky spent many years on Broadway as a pianist and conductor, as well as two years as a comedy writer on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” for which he received three Emmy nominations with his co-writers. He is now the afternoon deejay on the SiriusXM Broadway channel, as well as the host of “Seth Speaks.” He has performed his show “Deconstructing Broadway” in London, Boston (Irne award), and L.A. (with Barbra Streisand in the audience!). He co-wrote and co-starred in “Disaster!” (NY TIMES critics’ pick) on Broadway, which was licensed by Music Theatre International and is being performed around the country. His books include “Seth’s Broadway Diary Volume 1 and 2” (Dress Circle publishing), “My Awesome/Awful Popularity Plan” and “The Rise and Fall of a Theatre Geek” (Random House), as well as the recently released “Musical Theatre for Dummies.”     The season concludes in grand fashion on Thursday, April 10, when Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Award winner Patti LuPone returns to Mercyhurst with “ Patti LuPone: A Life in Notes .”    Patti LuPone is a three-time Tony Award winner for her performances as Joanne in Marianne Elliott’s award-winning production of the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical “Company,” Madame Rose in the most recent Broadway revival of the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents classic “Gypsy,” and the title role in the original Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Evita.” In her new concert, “Patti LuPone: A Life in Notes,” she performs an array of songs that are touchstones and reflections on her life growing up in America—from a young girl during the burgeoning rock and roll scene of the fifties, to coming of age in the politically and socially turbulent sixties, to eventually achieving success with both career and family. Conceived and directed by Scott Wittman and written by Jeffrey Richman, “Patti LuPone: A Life in Notes” features LuPone's longtime Music Director Joseph Thalken and String Soloist Brad Phillips.    THE 501 & THE SILVER CIRCLE  Patrons can gain first access to tickets and enjoy other exclusive benefits, including premium seats, private receptions, valet parking, and an invitation to MIAC’s signature event, The Season Soirée , by joining The 501 or The Silver Circle.     Through their generosity, 501 and Silver Circle members sustain the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture. One hundred percent of each membership supports the Institute’s mission of strengthening the vibrancy of the Erie region through richly varied, inclusive cultural experiences.     This year’s soirée, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7, will include a concert by Tony Award-winning star of stage and screen Aaron Tveit and a post-concert party in Trinity Green.     Memberships are available now at https://miac.mercyhurst.edu/501 . Current members wishing to keep or upgrade their seats must renew by Tuesday, July 9. Pink Martini is a Jazz and Latin group that was formed in 1994 by pianist, Thomas Lauderdale in Portland, Oregon.

Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics, with hopes of one day running for mayor. He went to every political fundraiser and found that the music at these events was underwhelming. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world, putting jazz, old-fashioned pop and classical music into the mixing pot, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994, for the sole purpose of providing more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers. He later called up his classmate at Harvard, China Forbes, who was living in New York City and asked her to join Pink Martini. They began to compose music together. Their first single “Sympathetique” became an overnight sensation in France, and was nominated for “Song of the Year” at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards. Forbes despite being monolingual sings in 15 different languages. With 10-12 musicians, Pink Martini performs their repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, The Middle East, and more. They made their European debut at Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and it’s orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998. They have gone on to play with over 50 orchestras around the world including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, The BBC Concert Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and more.

Despite being on their own independent label, Heinz Records, they have charted internationally in Belgium, Canada, France, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, The US and the UK, especially their album “Hey Eugene!” which was released on May 15th 2007, and “Get Happy” released on September 24th 2013.

Most recently, they released and album called “Dream a Little Dream” which is a collaborative studio album by Pink Martini and the von Trapps, released on Heinz Records on March 4th 2014.

How do you explain the phenomenon that is Pink Martini? They are hard to describe - their songs span a range of different sounds, cultures and languages (we once counted 11 different languages before we stopped). It's alternatively world music, easy listening, a wonderful blend of classical, pop, big band and swing all bundled up into one gigantic package of awesome and tied with a multi-coloured bow of happiness.

All the band members are insanely talented, and all are showcased at different times as they run through their repertoire - Thomas Lauderdale on piano, China Forbes on vocals (we've also seen them with Storm Large singing as China was recovering from surgery, and she's no slouch in the vocal department either), the brass section, the percussionists, the string section - all the ingredients for a big band, and a big sound.

The best part is that they are, simply, one of the most fun bands you will ever see. Expect the unexpected! Have you ever seen a conga line weaving through the (usually) sedate Royal Albert Hall, or for the audience to be invited on stage to dance away as they play (as the band gets told off by security for this clearly unplanned event)? Balloons, confetti, streamers, with everyone on their feet dancing away, complete and utter chaos, but what a fantastic feeling!

Pink Martini are friendly and welcoming, and the best thing is that they seem to have such a good time performing, and are so relaxed and natural on stage, that you cannot help but be swept along on a wave of happiness. You will want to be their friend, and be a part of their happy, crazy, colourful, musical world. You know that feeling as you walk out of a great concert where you are still humming under your breath, have a little skip in your step and a big smile on your face? That's how you know you've been to a Pink Martini concert.

For lovers of world music, jazz and classic pop Pink Martini is a must-see live band. The Oregon outfit have been working the live circuit for almost two decades and their classical approach to the live experience is really refreshing in the modern day. Performing fantastic tours as well as appearing at a number of esteemed festivals the group has really outreached their music to the masses and people who may not have naturally come into contact with their style of music otherwise.

The operation on stage is huge with an orchestral selection of musicians including an array of strings and a rich brass section. They all come together wonderfully to support the vocal talents of China Forbes and Storm Large who harmonise beautifully, knowing just how to react to one and other's vocals due to their dedicated time on the road. Every performer onstage seems to really throw themselves into the performance and it is clear to see they are so passionate for their respective instruments as well as the genres of jazz and classical. A class act with a huge amount of unrivalled talent.

My husband and I attended the concert at The Scottish Rite Auditorium Friday night. We had such a great time. I have been waiting to see Pink Martini with China Forbes for several years and they did not disappoint. They performed in seven languages. All our favorite songs and a lot more. The highlight for me was being invited on stage with the other women from the audience to sing two songs honoring women, Helen Ready’s “I am woman” and Dolly Parton’s “Working 9 to 5 “. I love this band and listen to them nearly everyday. Can’t wait til they come back to New Jersey!

Pink Martini are the class of their own. For those who don't like rap or techno, and don't necessarily go to hard rock or heavy metal concerts Pink Martini are a perfect solution. The live in Lyon was Pink Martini at its best. Solid proper perfect performance - they sound exactly like on the CDs, which in this case is an advantage. All the best songs were sung (some together with the audience) in many languages. This was a really hard to forget experience

It was a fabulous concert. Great music, high energy, and, thanks to China Forbes and Thomas Lauderdale, entertaining participation by numerous members of the audience. I have seen all of Pink Martini's concerts in Toronto, and last night's performance was one of the two best ones.

I have loved this group for twenty years and always searching for a venue in New England to see them perform. My wife and I enjoyed last nights show in Concord NH. I’m hoping there coming to Cape Cod next summer where they have performed before so that we can see them again.

My third time seeing the band. A fantastic range of instruments and talented artists put together to create perfection. really love the fact they spend time explaining the roots behind each song and are welling to meet and greet afterwards. Love them? I adore them.xx

Their shows are ALWAYS great altho some are better than others.

Would never miss one of their concerts if possible!

(Songkick: To require a review to be at least 30 words long is absolutely ridiculous and discourages future reviews)

This was perhaps the most enjoyable concert I have ever been to. So fun! Dancing, singing along, laughing! They really helped contextualize the music and make you feel involved. Absolutely love it! Would go again in a heartbeat.

Amazing concert! The vocals were exquisite, the instrument playing very melodic and refined. Pink Martini is the definition of really good music. Will definitely go to see them again and bring some more of my friends!
