Many cars come with cruise control systems, a great feature that will automatically keep a car driving at a set speed. This gives your feet a rest, and helps you save gas and avoid speeding tickets. Familiarize yourself with your car's cruise control switches, located on or near the steering wheel. Make sure to use cruise control only in safe conditions, and to stay focused on the road. Once you know how to operate cruise control, you're ready for a comfortable, efficient drive!

Operating Cruise Control

• Check your car's operating manual if you are unable to find the cruise control switches.

• Many cars have additional buttons to increase or decrease speed (marked by a +/-) when using cruise control.

• For some car models, cruise control will not operate below a certain speed, such as 40 miles (64 km) per hour.

• To stop cruise control briefly (such as when a car in front of you brakes), just press the brake as you normally would.
• If you are driving a manual, you can also disengage cruise control by pressing the clutch.
• If you are completely done using cruise control, you can press the “OFF” or "ON/OFF" switch.
• If your car has a cruise control “CANCEL” switch, you can also press that to stop it.

• If your car has a +/- button for cruise control, press this when you want to raise or lower your car's speed.

Using Cruise Control Safely and Efficiently

• Using cruise control on busy streets can also be dangerous. Since you yourself are not in complete control of your car, you may be paying less attention. You might brake or react to other cars more slowly than normal, increasing the chance of an accident.

Cruise control

Automatically keeps your car moving at a safe, constant speed..

Our cruise control system 1 works electronically to help regulate your car's speed. It reduces the stress on drivers and offers you more comfort on long journeys by keeping the vehicle at a constant speed. It's particularly effective when you have to stay within speed limits for a long way - when driving through miles of roadworks on the motorway, for example - and cuts the risk of your speed creeping up by accident.

The system works by memorising and maintaining the speed you select. It's very flexible, too. You can increase or reduce speed manually - to a defined value - and you also have the option of returning to the speed most recently memorised.

The cruise control system can be turned off simply by pressing a button or by pressing the brake or clutch pedals. For safety reasons, the cruise control system should not be used in heavy traffic or in difficult road conditions, such as heavy rain or ice.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Volkswagen ’s safe distance technology ..

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps to avoid accidents by always keeping your car at a safe distance from the traffic ahead.

Working together with the radar-controlled Front Assist traffic monitoring system, our adaptive cruise control system keeps you at a safe distance from the vehicle in front, making driving much easier - whether on motor way journeys or in slow and moving traffic.

As with cruise control, you set the speed at which you want your car to maintain. This is then further enhanced by being equipped with the safe-distance technology using a radar sensor, which modulates your speed based on traffic conditions. The system detects traffic slowing ahead and automatically reduces your speed to match and maintain an appropriate gap to the car in front. If necessary, the system will bring your car to a complete stop.

It does this with the help of the Front Assist system which primes the brakes if it senses a collision is likely, shortening the stopping distance when the driver hits the brake pedal.

How it works

The safe-distance technology 's radar sensor has a range of up to 200 metres and a beam angle of 12 degrees. The radar sensor and control unit are combined into a single unit which is located at the front of the car.

Using the signals from the radar sensor, the control unit computes the distance to the vehicle ahead and your car's speed relative to it. It also works out its lateral position on multi-lane roads. If there are several vehicles within the sensor's field of coverage at the same time, this information is used to select which of the vehicles the system should track. The radar sensor is not capable of detecting stationary obstructions, such as the end of a tailback or crash barriers, however.

If approaching a slower vehicle ahead or if another vehicle cuts in front of you, the adaptive cruise control slows down the car by initiating corrective controls in the engine management and, if necessary, in the braking system too. If the required rate of deceleration exceeds 30% of the vehicle's maximum stopping power, visual and audible warning signals will prompt the driver to apply the brakes manually.

In addition to the standard Adaptive Cruise Control, this version has a greater operating range of speeds between 0 -130mph.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Predictive Cruise Control

In addition to the above, this updated version of ACC includes:

Road recognition - using information from front and rear cameras and route information, your vehicle will predictively adjust its speed prior to junctions and bends.

Speed Assist - using both the front camera and route information identifies changes in the posted speed limit and automatically adjusts the vehicles speed.

Hi, I fitted my cruise control to my 9n3 TDI over the weekend. I looked around for a guide but was unable to find a complete guide that was written in English, so i thought of writing this one. Remember cruise control can only be fitted if the control units serial number starts with 6Q0 or 6Q1. This is in the drivers foot-well in the right if you want to check. The stalk & wiring loom can be brought from here. With MFD or Without MFD . There products can also be found on this website electritech.co.uk Firstly i had to remove the dashboard. This is because one of the plugs you need to add a pin too is plugged into the bulkhead. Others have said that they have managed to do this with extra long nose pliers. Others have suggested wiring it straight into the ECU. If you need help removing the dash a guide can be found here http://www.pimpowski.de/armaturenbrett_aus...n_pimpowski.htm The guide is in German but you can get a good idea by just translating the text & looking at the pictures. After you have removed the dashboard the car will look something like this

There are wiring differences between the 9N1/3 and the 6R as in there are 6 wires for the 9N1/3 and only 3 for the 6R this is reflected in the part numbers 6Q0953513 F or G for the 9N & same basic

My dad said he had one fitted on his golf and they cut a cable and added the stalk and joking it to the cable, I know now that was bull! Haha!! Thinking of doing this on my 9n3 gti

You need to look at your CCM and find out the model number. the CCM is located in the drivers footwell. It will have loads of cables going into it.

It should look like this:

it should look something like this 6Q*-937-049-***

if it starts with 6Q1 or 6Q0 it will work with cruise control. If it starts 6Q2 it wont support it and you will have to replace it with a higher spec one.

Must drop a quick thank you for posting this as your guide helped me fit CC to my polo, thankfully if you have nimble hands you dont need to get the whole dash off, just wedge in the socket from underneath.

Would it be quicker to simply wire directly into the ECU? Not OEM I know but I assume there are 5 wires in the ECU that can be removed and replaced by yours? The only thing concerning me is if I could get a plug for the stalk. Obviously there is a plug on one end and a plug on the other end. If I cut the plug off the end going into the CCM, I could keep the plug into the stalk right?

Theoretically, you could snip the 5 wires going into the ecu and replace them with bullet connectors to the stalk? Would take all of ten minutes no? Or is there a specific resistance to each wire that makes bullets totally inappropriate?

Hi am new on here have fitted cruise control to my 9n 2002 polo enabled it in the vag com but it doesn't seem to work does anyone know where i can get a detailed diagram as to which wire goes where and does what mine came with wiring loom and instructions but even after following the instrucions it doesn't work

the loom colours i got where

and the instructions said 2 blue but got 1 blue and 1 red

the intructions said Yellow pin 26

Green pin 27

Blue pin 28

Yellow pin 29

Black pin 30

Blue pin 31

i Connected all the colours as above except the red in pin 31 which went to the fuse number 4 but am not sure if pin 28 should go to the fuse

I ask because I have asked two VW dealers for retro fit cruise control and they have both said it cannot be adapted yet following your article and checking underneath I find that I have the Serial number 6Q1, meaning that it could be done,

I’m confused, please can you explain this.

I think it is down the the module supporting cruise control. It was a long time ago but i believe this was were i got the information from that only 6Q0 and 6Q1 were supported

Lol hahah took the dash out its not so bad just time consuming first time round. Could do one fairly quick now. Can do it with dash in if you're lucky but better to take it out so you can run the wires neatly

Cruise Control Activation

Dbw (drive-by-wire).

The CCS (Cruise Control System) activation in DBW (Drive-by-Wire) throttle systems will vary depending on the Engine Control Module.

1) Control modules using Short Coding often use a Login code and the letter " G " is shown in the component field when activated.

Activating Cruise Control on a new (DBW) ECU using Login

DBW (Drive-by-Wire) Factory fresh ECU's often come with cruise control de-activated.

[Select] [01 - Engine] [Login - 11] or if that function is not available then use [Coding - 11] instead Enter 11463 to activate cruise control [Do It!]

• You may have to cycle the key off and back on before the CCS is activated and the letter "G" is shown in the component field.
• The Throttle Body Alignment (TBA) may need to be completed before CCS operates.
• Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses the letter A instead of G in the component field.
• If the incorrect Cruise Control type is activated it will be necessary to deactivate it using the Login of 16167 followed by a key cycle and enabling the proper type.

2) Control modules using Long Coding are activated in the Coding. Due to different Control Modules Vehicle Equipment, the actual Coding Table is not shown here but will automatically be used by the Long Coding Helper with VCDS.

Activating Cruise Control on a new (DBW) ECU using Long Coding

[Select] [01 - Engine] [Coding - 07] [Long Coding Helper] Check the box for CCS and Exit [Do It!]

• You may have to cycle the key off and back on before the CCS is activated and the new coding takes effect.
• Long Coded modules do Not have the letter G in the component field. If you wanted to see if CCS is enabled, use the Long Coding Helper and see if the box is checked.

DBC (Drive-By-Cable)

The CCS (Cruise Control System) on DBC (Drive By Cable) throttle systems may or may Not be controlled by the Engine Control Module. Refer to the factory repair manual for additional details on these older systems.

Checking Cruise Control using Measuring Blocks

Checking CCS using Measuring Blocks normally involves evaluating binary values of related switches.

Gasoline Engines

Gasoline Engines often use Measuring Block group 066 to display CCS info. Refer to the charts below using line Field 2 and 4 data.

Diesel Engines

Diesel Engines often use Measuring Block group 006 to display CCS info. Refer to the charts below using line Field 2 and 4 data.

Special Notes

• When additional information is available in VCDS the binary values will appear in a balloon while connected to the vehicle. If there is a discrepancy with the details in the charts above, use the engine specific data in VCDS.
• On some vehicles equipped with an Automatic Transmission it may be necessary to test drive exceeding a speed of 30 km/h (19 mph) before voltage is supplied to the CCS switch.
• Some of the newer Engine Control Modules may use the UDS/ODX/ASAM protocols. Those modules do not support conventional Measuring Block Groups. Advanced Measuring Values will be used instead and you will check the boxes for CCS (or similar) to locate and view the readings.
• See the Cruise Control Retrofitting and Diagnostic Procedures for the specific platform.
• If factory equipped CCS decides to stop working for no apparent reason in a 2011-2012 Jetta or Beetle with a 2.5L Gas engine make sure the letter G isn't missing from the Component field. For some reason we've received numerous reports like that from NAR market (US/Canadian) cars without any damage/repair history that would explain lost CCS. Simply turning it off and back on again via Login with key cycles in between has resolved all issues to date.

Conditions for starting the Adaptive Cruise Control

• The selector lever must be in position D or S or be in the Tiptronic gate. A forward gear, but not 1st gear, must be selected in the manual gearbox.
• In vehicles with a manual gearbox, the actual speed should be minimum 30 km/h (18 mph) if no speed is stored.

Controlling speed

When switched on, the speed can be stored and set. The stored speed can vary from the speed actually being driven if the distance is being actively controlled.

The mph figures given in brackets in the table relate exclusively to instrument clusters with mile readings.

Stop-and-go traffic and the vehicle automatically pulling away

Automatic pulling away is not available for all vehicles and countries.

Setting the distance level

The speed-dependent distance from the vehicle in front can be set to one of 5 levels in the infotainment system   .

In wet road conditions, you should always set a larger distance than when driving in dry road conditions.

The following distances can be pre-selected:

When the highest level is reached, the distance returns to the lowest level when the button is pressed again.

Setting the driving programme

In vehicles with Driving Mode Selection, the selected driving mode (Driving Mode Selection) can affect the acceleration response   .

The following driving modes can be selected:

The following conditions can prevent the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) from reacting:

• If the accelerator is depressed.
• If no gear is selected.
• If the ESC is taking corrective action.
• If the driver has not fastened seat belt.
• If there is a fault in several brake lights on the vehicle or on a trailer with an electrical connection to the vehicle.
• If the vehicle is reversing.
• If the vehicle is travelling faster than approximately 160 km/h (100 mph).

• The ACC may not be able to recognise all driving situations correctly.
• Leaving your foot on the accelerator will mean that the ACC will not brake automatically. This is because manual acceleration overrides the system.
• You should always be prepared to brake the vehicle yourself.
• Observe country-specific regulations regarding the minimum distance.

The set speed will be deleted if the ignition or the ACC is switched off.

The ACC is automatically deactivated when the traction control system (TCS) is deactivated.

In vehicles with a start/stop system, the engine is switched off automatically during the stationary phase of ACC and is then restarted for moving off.

Adaptive cruise control supplements conventional cruise control with an active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control feature. Designed for use on freeways and express ways, in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, your car automatically accelerates or decelerates in order to maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you.

To activate the system, press the "ON/OFF" button at the end of the stalk on the lower end of the right side of the steering wheel. The radar-ready indicator will appear in the Multi Information Display.

Accelerate or decelerate to your intended speed, then press the stalk down to set it. If you want to go faster, push the stalk upward and hold until you've reached the desired speed and then release it. Or, if you want to slow down, push the stalk down and hold as you decelerate, then release it once you've reached the desired speed.

To cancel cruise control, tap the brakes, pull the stalk towards you or turn the system off with the ON/OFF button.

Adaptive Cruise Control was designed to maintain the preset distance between your car and the car driving in the same lane directly ahead of you.

When it’s active, it automatically adjusts for changes in the speed of the vehicle traveling directly ahead of you in order to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle distance you set.

In the event that you would like to change the preset distance between vehicles, you can do so by using the radar range button located on the lower right side of the steering wheel. Simply press the button repeatedly to cycle through the ranges available. You'll find them displayed on the Multi Information Display. And finally, you can disable the distance holding feature by pushing the cruise control stalk away and holding it until the indicator disappears and the conventional cruise control indicator lights up.
