Thrihnukagigur has three craters. Visitors can descend into the magma chamber through one of them by an elevator. It’s the only volcano in the world that allows visitors to go into its magma chamber and journey to the center of the earth.

KALEO - Way Down We Go (LIVE in a volcano)

Its Icelandic name, Þríhnúkagígur, is quite hard to pronounce for non-Icelandic speakers. It sounds like “three-nuga-geegu.” The literal translation is  three peaks crater . It actually describes one of many features about Thrihnukagigur.

Where is Thrihnukagigur Located?

The dormant volcano is located in the  Blue Mountain Range  (Bláfjöll in Icelandic) on the border between the capital and southern Region. This area is a popular recreational hub for local outdoor lovers to go skiing, hiking, and caving.

Going into the Thrihnukagigur volcano is the most fantastic experience of all. The colors beneath the surface of the earth are beautiful!

GPS coordinates of Thrihnukagigur:   63.9985° N, 21.6990° W

How to Get to Thrihnukagigur?

The unique experience of going into Thrihnukagigur volcano starts at the Blue Mountain parking lot. This is a meeting point for self-drive travelers and visitors picked up from Reykjavik. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the capital via Route 1 and later Route 417.

Car road in Iceland

From the parking lot, it takes less than one hour to walk on the vast lava field before you reach the Blafjoll welcome cabin. During the short hike, you will cross a terrain of basalts and green moss field. The hike is rated as moderate in difficulty. Participants need to be in good physical shape to manage the hiking or climbing part of the tour.

Thrihnukagigur’s Discovery and Exploration

The volcano was discovered in 1974 by cave explorer Arni B. Stefannson, who also gave it its name “Thrihnukagigur.” The tremendous magma chamber bewildered many volcanologists and scientists when the discovery made world news.  The discovery was news-worthy because   something exceptional happened at  Thrihnukagigur volcano – it left a large empty magma chamber without any cooled lava left inside.

Thrihnukagigur tourist information table

Some scientists assumed the lava was drained through tunnels and arteries deep into the earth.  As the geological pressure was released through the rift beneath, Thrihnukagigur was able to be intact with a magma chamber and the entire mountain – a “pristine collapse” as Stefannson once put.

The volcano was not open to the public for several decades after its discovery. Finally, in 2012, after years of pleading from Stefannson, Thrihnukagigur was open for tourism. It immediately became a popular attraction. It’s been 4,000 years since Thrihnukagigur’s last eruption and there are no indications of erupting in the near future.

People Exploring Thrihnukagigur Volcano

The silence inside the chamber once appalled the cave explorer because, in the beginning, it was almost impossible to appreciate the natural treasure in pitch darkness. Now, with sufficient lighting, the visitors can stay inside and appreciate the inner-beauty of Thrihnukagigur.

The Enormous and Colorful Magma Chamber of Thrihnukagigur

Once you’re inside the volcano, you’ll see the mesmerizing colors on the walls. They’re the minerals deposit left by the last eruption. The extreme beauty of such a rare geological wonder attracted many scientists.

Thrihnukagigur Volcano view from the top

Enjoy the otherworldly experience when you stand under the rock dome that has been scalded and ruptured by the forces of Earth. This underground arena was carved by the forceful gasses, powerful pressures and extreme temperatures that stained the walls.  The beautiful colors on the walls are mixed tones of colors like red and yellow.

Apart from the enchanting colors, the chamber’s size is also an amazing feature. One of the three peaks is a smaller cinder cone standing north-easterly about 35 meters (100 ft) higher than its surroundings. At the top of this cinder cone, you can see a funnel-shaped opening. It’s about 4×4 (12×12 ft) meters wide and is the entrance to a deep volcanic vault, which is 120 meters (400 ft) in depth.

Elevator inside Thrihnukagigur Volcano in Iceland

But the vault doesn’t end there. The volcanic passages continue to stretch deeper to the southwest and it eventually reaches a total depth of almost 200 meters (700 ft) down. To give you a better idea of how humongous the magma chamber is, we are going to compare its space with many famous landmarks from all over the world.

The landmark  church Hallgrimskirkja  is the tallest structure in Reykjavik with a height of 74.5 m. (243 ft.). It can be comfortably put into Thrihnukagigur’s magma chamber, with some extra space to spare. Also, the Statue of Liberty – a colossal sculpture that has a height of 93 m. (305 ft.) – can be easily fit into the magma chamber.

Thrihnukagigur’s Charm for Musicians

In August 2015, Kaleo – an Icelandic blues/rock band – recorded a live rendition of their song “Way Down We Go” inside the massive magma chamber. They were accompanied by 14 support staff members. In 2016, the volcano’s glamour attracted an alternative rock musician Chino Moreno of Deftones to perform a public concert inside the volcano at the Secret Solstice Music Festival.

Guide gives a brief before Thrihnukagigur Volcano tour

Upon reaching Thrihnukagigur crater’s opening, you’ll grab a harness and helmet before you’re lowered down into the chamber by an open elevator system. The 120-meter (400 feet) journey to the center of the earth takes about 6 minutes. Once you’re leveled down to the ground, you’ll spend about half an hour inside the volcano with an expert-guide.

The tour is rated as one of the top 5 volcano experiences in Iceland . Please note that it’s prohibited to take any stones away from the volcano as it’s important to protect the sensitive environment. The tour runs from May to October.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good hiking shoes are important. You should also bring warm outdoor clothing as the temperature inside the crater is around 4°C / 37°F.

It’s important for tour guests to realize that the weather is very unpredictable, and you should definitely bring warm, rainproof clothes with you, even if the weather in Reykjavik is nice and the forecast looks good. We highly recommend that you check the weather forecast the day before or the morning of your tour departure.

Yes, we highly recommend that guests take advantage of the complimentary transfer that is included in the tour.

At booking, you can select a pickup location either at your accommodations or close by. Please be ready at the pickup location 30 minutes before the tour departure time.

Alternatively, you can make your way to the Gray Line Bus Terminal in Holtagarðar, 104 Reykjavik. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the tour departure time stated on the voucher and introduce yourself at the Sales Desk for check-in.

Although we highly recommend using the complimentary transfer service, it is also possible to drive yourself to the meeting point.

If you plan to drive yourself, make sure you arrive at the parking lot outside the cabin no later than 20 minutes past the scheduled departure time (so that those who do the scheduled transfer and those who have their own car arrive at the same time).

The GPS coordinates for the meeting point at Blue Mountains parking lot are N 63.98502 (Latitude), W -21.649949 (Longitude).

* Directions from Reykjavík *

From your location in Reykjavik, find your way to Ring Road route nr. 1 (purple line), through Sudurlandsvegur road. Drive straight for about 15 minutes and then turn right on to Blafjallavegur road nr. 417 (dark green). Drive straight down that road until it changes into road nr. 407. Don’t make a right turn to the gravel part of road 417 – continue straight on road 407 towards the ski resort.

The roads are paved all the way from Reykjavik to the meeting point and suitable for all vehicles (even small cars like Toyota Yaris or similar). If you are at any point driving on a gravel road, then you are on the wrong track.

After driving for around 10 minutes after turning off route 1, you’ll see a sign that says ‘Inside The Volcano – Parking 300 meters’. Drive that distance and you will notice a parking lot that also holds a sign marked ‘Inside the Volcano’. Please note that there are other parking lots in the area, but the correct one is where you´ll see our sign (and probably other cars as well!)

The tours depart from Reykjavik at 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 16:00, and the walk over the lava field starts around 30 minutes past the hour. You should be on the parking lot 20 minutes past the departure hour you have booked. Do not be late! Wait for a guide, who will escort you and other passengers on the tour during the hike from the parking lot to the volcano.

* Directions from the Golden Circle/South Coast*

From your location in the southwest corner of Iceland, find your way to the town of Selfoss and/or Hveragerdi. From either of those towns, follow Ring Road route nr. 1 westbound (Light green) through Sudurlandsvegur road. Drive straight for about 15 minutes from Hveragerdi village, until you can take a left turn onto Blafjallavegur road. Follow the directions as stated above.

The minimum age for this tour is 12 years old. However, if parents feel like their child is up for the tour please contact us and we will check if an exception can be made to the age limit.

The hike is classified as moderately difficult. Guests hike along a path to Þríhnjúkagígur volcano. Most of the path is on level terrain with little elevation gain, but there are a few areas where you will be walking uphill on your way to the volcano. No climbing is required on the hike.

The last 10 minutes of the hike is the most challenging, with an elevation of around 100m/350ft.

You don’t need any particular skills or prior hiking experience in order to do the hike, but you need to be in decent shape. If you are suffering from any of the following, then the tour is probably not for you:

Problems with ankles, knees or any part of the feet. Problems with the back and/or hips. There is a lot of pressure on the back when walking on such an uneven surface. Obesity or being severely overweight. Any other physical problem that might affect your ability to complete a combined walk of almost two hours within half a day.

One guide minimum is with you at all times and there are a few (short) stops made on the way. There is a strict time schedule to follow and guests are expected to follow the walking speed set by the tour guide.

Yes, this tour is also available with helicopter transfer. If you are interested in the helicopter version of this tour, please contact us at [email protected] for pricing and availability.

Yes, the operator of this tour has taken the utmost precautions and safety measures to make this tour a safe experience. All tours are led by expert guides and you will be provided with safety equipment before entering the volcano.

The volcano’s name, mostly unpronounceable for anyone other than locals, would be directly translated as ‘Three Peaks Crater’. The name comes from Árni B. Stefánsson, who was the first to explore the vault and who pleaded the case for making it accessible for years.

The three craters (one of which you will be descending into) are prominent landmarks, standing against the sky on the highland edge, about 20 km (13 miles) southeast of the capital area, within the protected area of Bláfjöll Country Park.

Inside the volcano tour

This tour will begin when you are picked up from your hotel in Reykjavík and taken to the Bláfjöll Country Park, which sits just on the outskirts of the capital area. From here, it is just a two-mile easy hike to Thrihnukagigur volcano, where you will descend into the magma chamber of the volcano. At the base camp, your group will be split into smaller parties of 6–7 people.

After being equipped with the necessary safety equipment, you will enter the lift’s basket and begin your descent. Nowhere else in the world can you enter a magma chamber this way. This exciting lift journey toward the center of the earth covers 120 meters and takes about 6-7 minutes.

During your slow descent, the beauty of the magma chamber will become instantly apparent. Intense heat and pressure from Thrihnukagigur’s most recent eruption gave the rocks an incredible texture and coloration. Expect to see smooth walls and bizarre formations in many colors: yellows, blues, reds, oranges, and violets. So vibrant that it’s hard to believe that they could be natural.

It is not just the beauty of the space that will amaze you; it is also the size of it. To give some perspective on the size of the magma chamber, enormous monuments such as Reykjavík’s iconic Hallgrímskirkja church or the Statue of Liberty could easily fit inside it.

Once your descent down the chamber is complete, your guide will let you out of the elevator, and you can explore the volcano. You will spend about 30-40 minutes on the ground of the volcano, during which time you can take as many photos as you want. Your guides will be with you at all times, in the cable lift and on the ground in the chamber.

After your exploration, you will return to the elevator and ascend into the bright, open world. Once you reach the surface, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Icelandic meat soup or vegetable soup and hot coffee/tea/chocolate.

Finally, you will walk back over the lava field. Again, you will be accompanied by a guide at all times. The bus will be waiting for you in the parking lot, ready to drive you back to your hotel in Reykjavík.

With the necessary gear and equipment, this tour opens the gates to an almost surreal volcanic realm. All you need is the willingness to do a moderate 45–50 minute hike (in order to get to the crater) and the guts to descend 120 metres (400 feet) to the bottom of the volcano's magma chamber in an open cable lift.

The volcano Thrihnukagigur

The Thrihnukagigur volcano is dormant. It last erupted over 4,000 years ago. There are no indications of it erupting again in the near future. The volcano’s name, quite unpronounceable for anyone other than locals, would be directly translated as "Three Peaks Crater".

The three craters (one of which you will be descending into) are prominent landmarks, standing against the sky on the highland edge, about 20 km (13 miles) southeast of the capital area, and within the protected area of Blafjoll Country Park.

The most north-easterly of the three peaks is a small cinder cone, standing about 35 m/100 ft higher than its surroundings. At the top of this cone is a funnel-shaped opening, about 4×4 m (12×12 ft) wide, this is the entrance of a huge 120 m (400 ft) deep, bottle-shaped volcanic vault, measuring 50×70 m (160×220 ft) at the bottom. Volcanic passages continue down to the southwest, to a total depth of about 200 m (700 ft).

The beauty of the crater mostly consists of the various coloration found inside and its enormous and to some extent intimidating size. To put it in context, the ground space is equivalent to almost three full-sized basketball courts sited next to each other and the height is such that the full sized Statue of Liberty would easily fit into the chamber. So make no mistake – this chamber is colossal!

The magma chamber

This magma chamber is one of a kind of magma chamber and is often referred to as the heart of a volcano. It’s there that the liquid rock waits to find a way through to the surface, causing a volcanic eruption. In most cases, the crater is usually closed after the eruption by cold, hard lava.

Thrihnukagigur volcano is a rare exception to this, because the magma in the chamber seems to have disappeared. It’s believed that the magma solidified in the walls or quite simply retreated to the depths of the earth, just as if someone had pulled out the plug, letting all the magma run down out of the chamber.

Inside the volcano

You will spend up to an hour inside the volcano (or less if you prefer), and there is plenty of time to take as many photos as you wish. However, you are not allowed to take away rocks and stones from the crater. Expert guides will be with you at all times, in the cable lift and on the ground in the magma chamber.

While waiting for everyone in the group to complete the volcano visit, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Icelandic meat soup, hot coffee / tea / chocolate and perhaps some sweets. Don´t be surprised when we ask for your email – we would like to send you a quick survey to complete after the tour.

Finally, accompanied by a guide who is with you at all times, you walk back over the lava field. The coach will be waiting for you in the parking lot, ready to drive you back to Reykjavik.

Outdoor clothing to wear

The weather in the mountains can be very different to the city. A warm sweater and jacket are very useful, not least because it’s always the same temperature inside the crater – about 5–6°C (42–43°F). That’s cold! This is a trip to be remembered. Don't forget your camera! Yes, you can take as many pictures as you want! Most of all have fun!

Those who drive themselves to the meeting point have to be there 30 minutes past the set departure time. That’s because 30 minutes past is when the bus will arrive from Reykjavík. For example, if you booked the 08:00 tour, you have to be at the meeting point at 08:30.

Practical Information

Fitness level:   Moderate (the difficulty is 2–3 out of 5). No knowledge of hiking or climbing is required. The hike is on slightly hilly and uneven ground. This is NOT a tour for those in limited physical shape.

Distance walked:   3 km (2 miles) each way for some 45–50 minutes, with a guide

Don’t worry, expert guides will be with you at all times and you can rest assured extreme safety precautions are taken every step of the way.

We ask all visitors to behave responsibly during the tour. This environment is extremely sensitive and we expect all visitors to leave no footprint behind. Whatever you carry in with you, you must also carry out.

Simply put, Iceland is one giant geological hotspot. The country is one of the most active volcanic regions in the world, with eruptions occurring every 3–4 years on average. But why is Iceland so active? It is mostly due to its location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American plates are moving apart – and therefore literally opening the earth’s crust. The Thrihnukagigur volcano sits in the center of this ridge.

Do you provide equipment for the lava tube caving tour?

Yes, we will provide you with a headlight and a helmet.

What is recommended to wear on a lava caving tour in Iceland?

The Icelandic weather is very unpredictable therefore we highly recommend to dress in layers. Warm layers closest to you preferably wool/thermal underwear, pants sweater and on top waterproof outdoor clothing. It is also suitable to wear good hiking shoes and gloves. Jeans have proven to be a bad choice.

In the land of fire and ice, you’ll find the remarkable Thríhnúkagígur Volcano, a geological marvel that captures the essence of Iceland’s volcanic soul. Unlike any other place on Earth, Thríhnúkagígur offers you a rare opportunity to enter the only accessible magma chamber.

The Formation of Thríhnúkagígur Volcano

The chamber formed after the last eruption approximately 4,500 years ago, standing as an impressive testament to Earth’s dynamic and fiery processes. Thríhnúkagígur lies dormant within the Brennisteinsfjöll volcanic system, a stark and fascinating landscape that begs to be explored. Its magma chamber plunges 213 meters below the surface, making it a prime destination for those looking to experience the magnitude of volcanic power in complete safety.

Adventurers like you can descend into this subterranean wonder, traversing a vast, colorful cavity that once teemed with molten rock. Your journey into the heart of a volcano promises to be an experience of a lifetime. Being the only place where a magma chamber is naturally accessible, Thríhnúkagígur opens a window into the Earth’s interior.

Iceland, known for its captivating landscapes, boasts easily accessible volcanoes , showcasing the true essence of this land of fire and ice.

Why Thríhnúkagígur Volcano Is So Special

Thríhnúkagígur Volcano stands out for its unique geological features. These characteristics are a window into Earth’s fiery internal processes and provide valuable insights for geologists and volcanologists.

Stay within the designated area during your visit.

Volcanic Formation

Thríhnúkagígur is a monogenetic volcano, indicating it was formed from a single eruption event. This type of volcano is often the result of magma breaking through a single point in the Earth’s crust.

The structure of Thríhnúkagígur is marked by three distinct calderas , a rare formation that suggests a complex eruption history.

Picture these as colossal, bowl-shaped craters etched into the Earth’s surface, each telling a tale of volcanic forces at play. These massive cavities formed when molten magma surged upward, causing the surrounding crust to collapse, resulting in the creation of these extraordinary natural cauldrons.

Last Eruption

The volcano’s last eruption occurred approximately 4,000 years ago . Since then, Thríhnúkagígur has remained dormant.

Despite its quiet state, the legacy of its explosive past still provides invaluable information for understanding volcanic activity in the region.

Unique Magma Chamber

The dimensions of the chamber within Thríhnúkagígur are truly staggering, measuring approximately 213 meters (700 feet) in depth and 63 meters (200 feet) in diameter. To put this into perspective, one could comfortably fit renowned monuments such as the Statue of Liberty or the Tower of Pisa within its colossal confines.

Thríhnúkagígur’s magma chamber is a geological marvel due to its accessibility. Unlike most volcanoes, where the magma chamber collapses after an eruption, Thríhnúkagígur’s chamber has remained intact.

It’s one of the only places on Earth where you can directly observe an empty magma chamber, offering a unique opportunity to study the inner workings of volcanic systems .

My Experience of Going Inside The Volcano

My visit to Thríhnúkagígur volcano’s chamber took place on a sunny day in May. As I geared up in the meeting-point cabin, excitement began to build. The hike with the group and our guide towards the volcano’s summit revealed a spectacular landscape. Reykjavik’s landmarks, such as Hallgrímskirkja church and the white Grotta lighthouse , dotted the horizon, along with majestic mountains like Mt. Esjan.

Entering the depths of Thríhnúkagígur volcano became an otherworldly journey. Suspended within a sturdy metal cage, our descent through the volcanic throat started gently. As sunlight diminished, the cavernous walls unveiled a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of colors – vibrant reds, purples, and ochres, a testament to ancient eruptions frozen in time. The air held an eerie stillness, and its scent transformed as we delved deeper into the chamber.

Captured during my descend to the bottom of the volcanic chamber of Thrihnukagigur.

Reaching the dormant magma chamber, I was overwhelmed by its immense scale and unimaginable colors. Carefully strolling within the designated area, I saw the intricacies of solidified lava formations. Colors spoke of eternity, and wild patterns were revealed, crafted by molten forces. The experience was both humbling and awe-inspiring, a visceral connection to Earth’s primal forces. Emerging back into daylight, it all felt like a dream, vividly captured in videos on my phone and photos in my camera.

All of the stops were well worth seeing, the volcano crater, waterfall, and national park especially. I've visited before and this time found the geyser area now way too commercial, the facilities and cafe at the waterfall stop far are better. Beggi's hot chocolate recommendation there was spot on, superb. Read more Written April 19, 2024
  • rakele a 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing service Pick up didn’t happened, not sure what happened we were definitely waiting and there! Saw no green bus as the agent mentioned and definitely no pick up for me and my daughter :( So we didn’t get to do any activities of the planned and paid tour of the golden circle. No refund offered, only option to rebook the following day with any consideration of existing plan we had. I Was made to feel it was our fault, like we were lying and felt completely abandoned. Only option offered by the agent on the phone was to still attend the blue lagoons, this too did not go well, we were simply emailed the time to be at the bus station, we were told to be sure to be at 17:20 at the bus station only to be told when we arrived that the bus was not departing before 18h so we had to wait 40m! No other instructions given by the Grey line’s agent on the email I had to request, only the time and wished us a good day! It’s hard to enjoy THE day when you paid €200 for a tour that didn’t happen! To continue what was already a extremely stressful and disappointing day, when we arrived at the blue lagoon we were told they had no booking with our name, probably because we should have been part of a group, but no trace of the group name either! We spent the next 30m trying to call Grey line without success as they were already closed. Only got a called back had to email them asking for the booking reference for the lagoon entry. By then the lovely lady at the lagoon reception who had also tried multiple time to call them, could see on our tour tickets that i paid the entry and she could see my distress at the situation allowed us in anyway. She even offered a drink to my daughter. The only good interaction i had with Grey line was from an agent called Paul whom replied to my first email and called me back at the lagoon. For the rest I feel cheated of €200! Which as a single mother is lot of money! We Did not see the golden circle and I ended up with a very disappointed daughter :( We had two tours with Artic adventures and everything was 10 stars and smooth but sadly i cannot say the same of Grey line. • lornacP8518SY 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic golden circle and secret lagoon experience My girlfriend and I had a fantastic experience! Originally we were booked on golden circle and Fontana baths, but due to an issue (before we even flew) the operator upgraded us to golden circle and secret lagoon. Christina and Herman kept us company during the golden circle. Christina was an amazing guide and super funny, while also keeping us all on time. Favourite stop was definitely Gullfoss! We were then dropped off at the secret lagoon for a fantastic experience. It was so relaxing, really nice atmosphere and perfect to have a soak after such an early start. We were picked up from secret lagoon by Darren and helgi, who made us feel welcome immediately and were so helpful to us figuring out where their new additional passengers needed to be dropped. We were very lucky to have not one fantastic but two fantastic tour guide and driver teams. Everything was very clear throughout the process - the only difficulty we had was the pick up bus said blue lagoon and airport which was confusing but a quick word with the bus driver and that was all sorted. Thanks for helping us to make so many amazing memories! Read more Written April 12, 2024

  • Nico885 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Better than I imagined! The tour was even better than I could've expected, we went in April. There are 3 stops and granted they are not all that long, ranging from 30 mins to hour each stop but still enough time to briskly explore independently the main sights and shop/restaurants. If you purchase lunch this takes a lot of the time at one of the stops. We as a family packed a lunch and ate while exploring the scenery. I would recommend one of the stops be slightly longer to accommodate lunch. However we manged it all and still had a great experience. Helgi the driver and Darren the tour guide were amazing. I've been on many tour guides in various countries and he is one of my top favourite. Darren was funny, informative, insightful and knowledgeable. He also explained clearly where to walk and go for each stop, the best places to stand and each tip he gave was on point. This trip is well worth booking, the sights, guesyer and waterfall are unforgettable. I would love to come back in summer season to do this again. Read more Written April 6, 2024

The Volcano with Three Craters

Thrihnjukagigar is the only volcano in the country that actually lets tourists go inside through the craters into the magma chamber. Thrihnjukagigar has three different craters one of which has been laden with equipment to transport people in. The name Thrihnjukagigar even means three peaks crater which is what the volcano actually is. It has been about 4000 years since Thrihnjukagigar last erupted which makes it a completely safe place for exploration and sightseeing. The crater is about 700 ft, deep while the ground areas measure 160×220 ft. Fun fact, Thrihnjukagigar sits right on top of the two tectonic plates that Iceland stands upon. Moving and shifting of these plates makes the earth’s crust split which initiates the volcanic activity. The crater that receives tourists is a funnel-shaped crater that opens up wide at the bottom. It takes about 6 minutes to reach the bottom of the crater after strapping on the harness.

Colors that You Didn’t Even Know Existed

It is no secret that volcanoes are very beautiful once they have calmed down and are not spitting ashes and lava everywhere. The colors that the trail of lava leaves behind are simply exquisite and can be seen in many lava caves as well as the land that surrounds them. However, Thrihnjukagigar volcano is on a whole new level when it comes to beautiful colored walls and lava chambers. Once you are elevated down in the lava chamber by harnesses, you will enter a world full of colors that you probably have never seen in your life. There are shades of brown, golden yellow, red, blue, black, green, rusty red-brown, and many more shades are made by a combination of these colors. Long thing short, there is a whole new world inside the magma chamber of this volcano and you will be nothing but speechless once you lay your eyes upon it.

A Musician’s Heaven

The stunning visuals of the volcano are not only a huge tourist attraction but also serve as a great place for song shoots and recordings. Kaleo, an Icelandic rock band, recorded their song live in the magma chambers of Thrihnjukagigar volcano in 2015 . The next year attracted another musician, Chino Moreno, who had his concert in the volcano during the Summer Solstice Music Festival.

Getting to the Bottom

It is necessary to book a guided tour to go inside the volcano of Þríhnúkagígur. Once you reach the mouth of the crater, you will receive a helmet and harness before elevating down to the magma chamber in an open-air elevator. The crater is about 120 meters deep and it takes about 6 minutes to reach the bottom. The tour of the magma chamber will take about 30-45 minutes.

How to Reach Thrihnjukagigar

It takes about 35 minutes to reach the volcano when driving from Reykjavik . If you are driving yourself, leave Reykjavik and get to Route 1. Continue on Route 1 until you reach the right turn that leads to road 417. Thrihnjukagigar is about 4 kilometers from this point. Once you reach the gravel track, find a parking space, and continue the rest of the journey on foot. If you have booked a tour, your meeting place should be right around here. The guide will lead the way from there onwards. The volcano is only a few minutes away from there.

Inside the Volcano: Small Group Thrihnukagigur Hike and Tour from Reykjavik

Don’t fear, as the volcano’s ancient magma has drained out since its last eruption, leaving cool but fascinating tunnels left for us to explore with our expert guides. This is one of the only places in the world where you can safely enter a magma chamber and is an experience not to be missed.

Check availability

This small-group journey within the now-extinct Thrihnukagigur Volcano Tour will add a dash of adventure to your Iceland stay. Enjoy this fascinating opportunity to climb inside a cavern constructed thousands of years ago by Mother Nature’s strong forces.

Begin by being picked up from your Reykjavik hotel. Then head to Iceland’s Blue Mountains (Bláfjöll) for your volcano adventure, where your guide will give you an overview of how this unique volcanic location was produced 4,000 years ago. The spectacular magmatic chamber was formed as a result of the one-of-a-kind eruption.

When you get at Thrihnukagigur, pay attention to your guide’s safety instructions. Then venture out onto the rugged lava fields surrounding the volcano. Because of the uneven ground and jagged rocky surface, your walk will be moderately difficult, so make sure you’re in good shape and have suitable hiking shoes. Continue hiking through the field, stopping to appreciate the volcanic cones and steaming gas fissures along the way, until you reach the crater’s rim.

Iceland Volcano Hike

While donning your helmet and harness, listen to another short safety lesson, then board the open cable elevator with three or four other passengers to descend inside the site. As you descend, take in the breathtaking vistas while watching the crater’s walls, which were constructed many thousands of years ago. Soon after, you’ll arrive at the base of this dormant volcano, where you’ll join your guide on an exploration of the deep interior.

Examine the colossal granite dome above, whose surface is strewn with a rainbow of hues generated by the magma that once touched it. Your guide also tells you a few stories about the last eruption, allowing you to imagine this spectacular place as it once was, bubbling with liquid magma. Return to your car, which will drop you off at your Reykjavik accommodation, after spending time within the crater.

Table of Contents

Inside the volcano

Listen to a fascinating introduction of the Thrihnukagigur volcano – the site of your underground experience — during the short trip to the Bláfjöll mountain range. Hear about the last 4,000-year eruption of this dormant volcano, and why the nature of the blast left the volcano with an open and accessible magmatic chamber.

Arrive at Thrihnukagigur after about 30 minutes and, after a briefing, begin a one-hour hike to the crater. While the trail is not steep, it is undulating and uneven, making it only suited for hikers who are moderately fit. Hiking boots are recommended. Follow your guide along the 2-mile (3-kilometer) path at a steady pace, taking in the surrounding lava fields littered with volcanic cones and gas vents as you walk.

3 Day Private Volcano Tour Iceland / Westmanislands & Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

When you arrive in the crater, undergo another safety briefing and put on the helmet and harness that have been provided. Then, with three or four others, board the open cable elevator that will take you down into the crater. Enjoy the thrill of descending roughly 400 feet (120 meters) into the volcano’s throat, passing millennia-old rock walls deep into the Earth’s guts.

Step off the lift at the bottom and join your guide in exploring the magma chamber. Admire the magnificent natural arena and the mosaic of colors generated by scorching and charring on the granite dome. As you take in the sights, learn astonishing information about the volcano’s most recent eruption, and image the chamber as it once was, filled with a seething mass of blazing hot lava, imagine the chamber as it once was. Ascend to the surface after around 30 minutes within the volcano, and then walk back to your vehicle.

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.
