Cycle the city.

See the sights of Salt Lake City by bicycle!

This 13.5-mile loop features downtown Salt Lake City and several historical sites along the way. The ride is a perfect half-day bike tour for visitors and residents alike.

Route signs mark the way, and face the preferred direction to ride the loop.

How to follow the route:

  • Download 8.5×11  printable bike map .
  • Download our  geo-PDF of the route , viewable on a PDF map reader on your smart phone (search your app store for “Geo PDF” or “PDF Map” to find this type of app).
  • Simply follow the special “Cycle the City” street signs along the road and paths.

About the route:

The route uses Salt Lake City bike lanes and multi-use paths, where possible, along with some other city streets. The route is suitable for bicyclists who are generally comfortable riding on urban streets with bike lanes. It does include one uphill on a multi-use trail along City Creek Canyon. The hill is gradual but is just over a mile long — and you will be richly rewarded with great views of the city from Bonneville Boulevard. Other than the fun downhill back into the valley, the rest of the route is flat.

Highlights of the route:

The start/end point of the ride,  Pioneer Park,  hosts the Twilight Concerts (Thursday evenings) and the SLC Farmers’ Market (Saturday mornings) in the summer. From Pioneer Park, head into the heart of downtown and past  Temple Square,  then follow a path through  City Creek Park  and into  Memory Grove.  Follow the roadway (closed to cars) up along the banks of City Creek to Bonneville Boulevard, where you will turn left onto a wide dedicated bicycle and pedestrian lane. Enjoy the views of the city and  Utah State Capitol Building.

Descending down the hill into the valley, you’ll pass the  McCune Mansion  and arrive at  Temple Square,  one of Utah’s most popular tourist destinations.  You must dismount and walk your bike through the square itself.  Situated in the heart of downtown, Temple Square is open to the public and features a temple, gardens, and the world headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Heading south out of downtown, you’ll come to the  City / County Building,  a 19th century architectural gem currently serving as Salt Lake’s city hall, and proceed through Library Plaza past the modern and innovative  Salt Lake City Main Library  and  The Leonardo Science Museum. You’ll proceed south to  Liberty Park,  a classic urban park with a central tree-lined promenade. Heading west, you’ll take bike lanes on 800 South to the new 9 Line Trail, ultimately ending up at the  International Peace Gardens.  The peace gardens, conceived in 1939 and dedicated in 1952, feature 28 national gardens with plantings, garden architecture, and statues of world peace leaders typical of each nation and its culture.

Continuing north along the  Jordan River Trail,  you’ll pass the  Fisher Mansion  and then head back into town on 200 South, returning again to Pioneer Park.

Bicycle Rentals

Bicycle rentals are available at several bike shops in the downtown area.

GREENbike, the SLC bike share system,  may be suitable for the downtown portions of the route. However, you may appreciate a lighter bike for the pedal up Memory Grove.

A unique experience: Bike along trails and rivers of the Wasatch Mountains

Salt Lake City in northern Utah offers visitors and residents alike one of the world’s most amazing juxtapositions. One of the USA’s cleanest, most vibrant, livable and bike friendly cities is nested right in the center of some of the country’s most beautiful natural geography.

The city is an oasis in the area’s high desert. We’ll ride two-by-two over the hills, up the mountains, and through the area’s bushes and scrub oak.

Each day of riding will feature a different viewpoint of the Salt Lake Valley. We’ll ride up canyons with houses, other canyons with undeveloped watersheds, and along the Jordan River; a riparian zone that bisects the Salt Lake Valley, where Utah Lake flows into the Great Salt Lake.

In the city, you’ll notice the numerous bikeshare stations around the downtown area. A leader in these initiatives, Salt Lake’s bikeshare stations doubled within a year since the program’s 2013 launch. GREENbike Director Ben Bolte said he hopes to have 100 bike share stations spread throughout downtown by 2020.

In fact, (and since we’re telling you about a great bike and adventure tour), SLC has over 150 miles of bike lanes, multi-use trails, shared lanes, and off-road tracks. The entire city is tourable along a 13.5-mile loop that goes through downtown, passes the farmer’s market, and hits tons of historical sites across the city. Plus, the city has infrastructure in place to help keep bicycle commuters safe on city streets, like bike turn boxes and bicycle-specific traffic signals.

When we’re downtown, we’ll tour Temple Square, headquarters of the Mormon Church. Wherever you live, you’ve probably seen or have even been visited by Mormon missionaries. The Mormon Church’s world headquarters in Salt Lake include Temple Square, the Visitors’ Center and Conference Center, each of them famous architectural icons punctuating the downtown skyline against the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. No visit to Salt Lake is complete without this visit.

In Utah, Mormons are actually a minority amidst Salt Lake’s larger multinational and religiously diverse population, its vibrant community plus its thriving counterculture. One example of pushback humor includes a Utah produced beer called Polygamy Porter (Why Have Just One? – is its tagline).

On our last day, we’ll head up to Park City, Utah. This historic mining town is also home of the famous Sundance Film Festival. We’ll ride the Alpine Slide, tour the historic city center, and soak our troubles away in “The Crater”- a secluded hot spring.

Optional Tour Choices(available at checkout):

$950  Single Supplement (for solo travelers who wish to enjoy a private bedroom and bathroom).

Important Note:

Due to the configuration of our classic downtown hotel, we may not be able to offer rooms with twin beds. We are not able to offer roommate pairing on this tour. If you are traveling solo, you will need to pay the Single Supplement.

Deposit is available: $1000 – call 800-825-9766.

We begin our trip at our hotel with an orientation, before our welcome dinner at a nearby downtown restaurant. If you’ve flown into the Salt Lake Valley during the day you’ll have had great views of the Oquirrh and Wasatch Mountains, the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake, plus Kennecott Copper Mine, a visually dramatic man-made spot. The surrounding mountains may even have snow on their tallest peaks, even at this time of year.

As it’s Saturday night, a night on the town will be the choice for most in our group. Salt Lake City’s diverse population and downtown destinations are many and fun!

We ride to the downtown lightrail station then board Utah’s FrontRunner with our bikes, bound for the southern part of the Salt Lake Valley. This ride starts early with some hills, then transforms to a gradual downhill trip along the Jordan River as its fresh water from Utah Lake flows into the Great Salt Lake. Our ride relaxes through wetlands and woods, meadows and thick cottonwood groves. Most of this paved trail is part of a ”greenbelt” through the urban Salt Lake Valley, bypassing vehicle traffic.  Our stop for a picnic lunch allows us to recharge and enjoy the outdoors.

This evening’s dinner destination is Salt Lake’s Red Iguana, one of our host’s favorite Mexican restaurants. It’s Oaxacan mole sauces, other popular fare and colorful decor draw enthusiastic diners from around the world.

This morning takes a leisurely, late starting point as we recover from yesterday’s ride, then we grab our bikes to ride up City Creek Canyon, just north of the city. Today, its paved road is reserved for cyclists and pedestrians so we ride traffic-free. A burbling brook parallels this trail. It’s an icy cold one in which hikers love to soak their tired feet. As we ride through the shady, sequestered canyon, the hot summer air cools impressively. It’s always great fun to meet new riders along this trail.

We enjoy a relaxed lunch downtown before a walking tour of the city. We’ll learn some more about Salt Lake’s diverse populations that make the city’s political, artistic and social scenes so interesting.

Tonight’s dinner is at one of downtown’s prolific brew pubs. Handcrafted beers as well as local spirits are impressively popular in this state that has a reputation for teetotalism and strict beliefs about alcohol consumption.

Today after breakfast, we head east into the Salt Lake Valley’s foothills, to Emigration Canyon. According to history, this is the spot where in 1847 Brigham Young announced, upon seeing the fertile valley below, “This is the right place, drive on.”  In this canyon you’re invited to stop to visit “This is the Place Heritage Park,” a State site dedicated to preserving the valley’s early history. We pass Utah’s famous Hogle Zoo as we continue our ride up an 8-mile stretch popular to local cyclists for its great workout, beautiful summit views and speedy downhill return to the city. After this ride, we’ll take the remainder of the day to explore and enjoy the city’s diverse architecture and cuisine.

Today our destination is Antelope Island. Free-ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep and many other desert animals call this state park their home.  Millions of birds also gather along this island’s shores. See it all in 360 views as you enjoy an easy hike to the top of Buffalo Point. Afterward, we stroll down to the water to enjoy some BBQ and beach time for the afternoon.

Today we drive up through Highway 80’s curvy mountain pass to Park City, home of the Sundance Film Festival and many of the 2002 Winter Olympics’ events.  We enjoy a fun swoop in handcarts, down the hill of the famous Alpine Slide and breathe in the crisp mountain air.  Today we have time to walk around Park City’s charming downtown, to browse its galleries, shops and famous eateries. Lunch is on our own today.

In the afternoon we drive a little further further east, to another delightful small town with an incredible natural attraction. “The Crater” is a geothermal hot spring inside a dome of limestone with a hole at its peak. Today’s the day to enjoy a perfect hot soak after so many days of exertion in the saddle. Grab a snorkel and explore the deep hole, where local scuba divers practice and enjoy the cave-like conditions.

This evening we drive west back to downtown Salt Lake for our farewell dinner at one of the city’s award-winning restaurants.

No activities scheduled today, so you may arrange flights as needed.

Most of our trips draw more single travelers than couples. When couples do join us, it’s usually because they’re looking forward to interacting with a gay group; if they wanted a holiday by themselves, they wouldn’t have signed up to travel with us. Furthermore, the activities included with our trips serve as natural ice-breakers. Within a day, you’ll be traveling with friends. You don’t need to pay the single supplement if you’re traveling alone. We’ll be happy to match you with a roommate. Pay the single supplement only if you want a bedroom to yourself.

For selected trips, including cruises, we will charge half the single supplement if you request a roommate but we can’t match you with someone.

This tour starts and ends in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Daily bike rides will be on paved and winding canyon roads (8-40 miles). Going up requires stamina and strength, and the thrilling ride back down requires good balance and judgement. The tour will also feature walking tours of the city, mostly on paved, regular surfaces. Park City touring takes place on steep urban walkways in good condition. Antelope Island hiking is on gravelly but well-traveled paths.

Mountain Biking in the Wasatch

Cycling in salt lake.

One of the most happening cycling scenes in the nation is right here in the Beehive State's capital, Salt Lake. From skinny tires to fat, from townies to fixies, Salt Lake offers an incredible array of biking options.

When the famed "Greatest Snow On Earth" starts to melt from the Wasatch, small and not-so-small two-wheeled armies start invading the trails, streets, paths and hills in and around Salt Lake. Here, in no particular order or hierarchy, is a breakdown of the more noticeable and mainstream cycling options for the hard-core to the casual commuter.

Whether you fall into the casual category and simply want to explore Salt Lake City on a cruiser bike, or you want rip a gnarly downhill, a number of Salt Lake bike shops can get you set up. Shops that offer excellent inventory and stellar customer service include Contender Bicycles in the 9th and 9th neighborhood and Millcreek Bicycles in the Olympus Cove area.

So whether you throw your leg over an old townie or a bike worth more than many cars, strap on shin guards and a full-face mask to ride your 10" travel downhill bike or just want to take a spin with your kids, Salt Lake offers the ideal ride for you. There's a lot to see and do in and around Salt Lake, and much of it is best experienced perched atop a bike. Enjoy!

Mountain Biking

Perhaps one of Utah's most ridden mountain bike trails is the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. As the name implies, much of the trail is on or near the shoreline bench of the ancient glacial Lake Bonneville, traversing above the valley populace and offering stunning panoramic views. Though it actually spans the entirety of the Wasatch Front, the most popular section of the Shoreline Trail tends to be from City Creek to Emigration Canyon. Along the trail are a number of spurs, many of which feature incredibly fast and fun descents, some with features for those with serious travel in their shocks. These multiple spurs and trailheads also allow for varying lengths of rides.

Another one of Salt Lake's more popular mountain bike rides is the Wasatch Crest Trail, basically traversing the ridge that separates Salt Lake from Park City, and running from  Big Cottonwood Canyon  to Mill Creek Canyon. The actual trail begins near Guardsman Pass, so many opt for a shuttle from Salt Lake; heartier souls make the climb. This trail, without a doubt, offers some incredible views in all directions.

Road Cycling

Gentle, cruising cycling paths include the Jordan River Parkway and the Great Salt Lake Legacy Parkway. For good, intermediate-level climbing, Emigration Canyon tends to be popular choice for a number of reasons: good pavement, fairly wide shoulders, great accessibility and, for the most part, courteous and aware drivers. If you want to test your cycling mettle, there's always Little and Big Cottonwood canyons as well as Millcreek, each of which offers serious challenge as well as very rewarding and speedy descents. Connecting all of these is a very good network of roads and paths, so getting around from anywhere in the valley is relatively simple.

Urban Cycling

Bicycle

And Salt Lake is one of many cities to adopt a  Bike Share program , where members (1-day to annual memberships available) can check out a bike from any number of Bike Share stations and ride it around town, returning the bike to any other station. Again, it's a great way to see and experience the downtown core of the city.

  • swoodruf 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles WONDERFUL Bike Tour with James & Aaron I took my grandson, who is 13 years old, on a trip to Salt Lake City. I always try to find active things to do with him, and I found this bike tour of the city. I asked for an e-bike, and Charlie had a regular bike. We had a little trouble finding where to meet, but I called James, and he helped us find it. I see that the location is more defined now which will help. We met up in Liberty Park where we rode around and got used to our bikes. We couldn't have asked for two better guides! Aaron was learning the route and provided the bulk of the tour, while James (the owner) followed us. The entire group was just Charlie and I and the two guides. We learned SO much, and we saw things that we never would have found on our own. Both James and Aaron were very knowledgeable about the history of the city and all of the landmarks. They were also a lot of fun and very nice. I felt safe the entire time, and I was amazed at how bike friendly the city is. Thank you very much, guys, for a really fun tour of the city! I appreciated the heads up about the weather, the quick response from our guide, and that our guide was flexible to our schedule. Our flight was delayed and our guide was willing to adjust and wait accordingly to us. The customer service was great and we ended up doing a walking tour that was extremely informative. We learned about the culture of Utah-nians (inside joke) and was able to explore local photo friendly areas. Would definitely book again! Read more Written December 2, 2022

We found this tour through an internet search and we couldn’t have been happier! James, the owner the company, guided us on the Sunset Bike and Brothel Tour. We are happy that we took this tour at the beginning of our trip as James gave us very helpful Information about SLC (good places to eat and other fun things to do around the city) as well as interesting history of the city! James is very professional and accommodating. We also took a hiking tour, also offered through Salt Lake Bike Tours, with Jace. Again, we couldn’t have been happier as Jace also gave us interesting facts and history of SLC as well as giving us tips on places to eat! All recommendations for places to eat were delicious!!! We both felt that the tours and this tour company was the BEST that either of us have taken. We both would highly recommend using this company for a tour of SLC! Read more Written May 30, 2022
  • Michael D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful tour, Fantastic tour guide…James is the Best! Our family of 5 arrived in Salt Lake at 1pm after flying in from the Boston (flight was at 7am EST). So we were a bit tired but wanted to do an activity. This tour was just what we needed. The tour was at 5pm and lasted 2.5 hours. It might sound long, however the time flew by with such an engaging tour guide, James. He first brought us around Liberty Park to not only tell us the history of the park but to gage the biking ability of our group. So don’t fret whether you group has good or less biking skills, James will adjust to your collective level. James will take you through a loop of the city stopping at points of interests. His knowledge of the city is deep. He stops frequent enough to take a sip of water which is supplied and to catch your breathe. We never felt rushed…James knows his audience. We spent only one day in SLC and are glad we chose this activity. We learned things about the city that we never knew. If you were staying in SLC for an extended time, I recommend this tour first. From what you learn, it could certainly influence what activities you do in the following days. Thanks James and good luck the Summer! Read more Written May 28, 2022
