Career Opportunities in the Cruise Industry
If you long to feel the cool ocean breeze and excitement of traveling to exotic destinations all over the world, while still making a living, then the world aboard a cruise liner will be perfect for you. In every port, in every country, there are cruise ships that are constantly looking for eager individuals to hop on board and join the team in one of the many cruise employment opportunities offered. Whether you want to enjoy the carefree life at sea a part of the hotel staff or an instructor, or whether you are looking to further you career as a gourmet chef, entertainer, cruise ship employment will be your best bet. The pay is great, the experience is one of a kind, and, you get to travel for months at a time. If you are interested in making a permanent career from working at sea as a sea captain, mate, able seaman, deckhand, oiler, wiper, electrician, or engineer, cruise liner employment will offer you a more glamorous option than working on an oil rig or container ship.
Types of Cruises
To work on a cruise liner, you will firstly need to understand the various types of cruises and cruise liner employment that is on offer. Most countries in the world offer ocean liner cruises, but you can also find companies that offer exciting river cruises for example. Some cruises journey mainly in Europe, and The Americas, while some aim for the exotic islands of the Caribbean. The best thing to do when you become a member is to decide where you would like to work and find companies offering cruise ship jobs in that specific area. You can also find cruise liner employment even if you want to be land based. There are tons of jobs at the ports where many of the large cruise liners have private lodges and recreation centers for their guests during land excursion part of the cruise.
Cruise Ship Career Paths
With most cruise liners being like mini cities (some ships can hold 2,000 guests or more), with staff reaching over 3,000, you can just imagine the multitude of jobs that await. There are certain sections on board a cruise ship where you can find the job that is most appropriate to you and your relevant skills or qualifications:
- Restaurants (chef jobs, kitchen staff, waiters, barman, manager, etc.)
- Hotel Facilities (cabin crew, housekeeping, reception, manager, butlers etc.)
- Leisure Center (instructors, lifeguards, activity leaders, etc.)
- Gym (personal trainers, workers, etc.)
- Salon and Spa Jobs (massage therapist, hair stylist, etc.)
- Land Excursion Team (tour guide, seaman, recreation staff, etc.)
- Merchant Marine Jobs(captain, mates, able seaman, deckhands, etc.)
- Engine Department (chief, DDE, assistant engineer, oiler, wiper, etc.)
- Shops (cashiers, managers, bookkeepers, etc.)
- Casinos (dealers, security, hospitality, etc.)
- Entertainment (production manager, director, actors, comedians, dancers, lighting, sound engineer, backstage crew, etc.)
In each of these areas you can find tons of cruise liner jobs that will appeal to you. Certain positions require some form of qualification whether it is in the hospitality industry , retail sector, medical wing, or maritime, but some of the entry level positions are open for those that have no qualifications as yet, like students or high school graduates looking for a bit of adventure while they make some money. Some jobs on cruise ships will require you to have some experience in a related field.
Here is a current listing in the job center:
Assistant or Junior Waiter/ess
Job Description: To maintain and provide a high quality service and customer care for all guests on board in the food service section. You will be required to hold a position of responsibility within the emergency plan of the ship.
Job Requirements: You need to have at least 2 years of experience in a top hotel or restaurant environment, you need a diploma or recognized equivalent, you must have an excellent command of the English language both verbal and written, and you need to be pleasant, positive, and outgoing, along with a desire to succeed.
Don't be stuck with a boring job! Search for your Dream Job Today!
Tons more jobs just like this one will be available for you to see and to apply for once you become a member .
There are of course the medium river cruise liners that you can find jobs at if you want to enjoy working at sea in a more compact capacity. Many of the river or barge cruise vessels operate in parts of Europe, China, and Russia. These vessels usually hold between 250 and 900 passengers, and require many staff.
There are also yacht cruises where no more than 100 guests are booked, so your duties as part of the staff will increase, but you will gain more experience and enjoy a more eco-friendly, naturalistic cruise.
On CruiseJobFinder, you can find profiles for just about every cruise ship in the world, and then select the type of job that interests you and the location you want to travel to find the perfect cruise liner employment for you.

15 Incredible Cruise Ship Jobs (Get Paid To Travel!)
Posted: October 16, 2023 | Last updated: October 16, 2023
Traveling the world while getting paid to do it might sound like a dream, but it can be a reality if you take a job on a cruise ship.
Of course, this type of work isn’t for everyone — the hours can be long, and it may mean a lot of time away from home. But there are plenty of benefits as well.
If working for a cruise line sounds ideal, there are plenty of career opportunities on board. Here are 15 jobs that can help boost your bank account as you travel the world.
Editor's note: All salary figures are from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
12 legit ways to make extra cash
Activities coordinator
Even short cruises are packed with activities for travelers to engage in. Among other things, you'll find games, happy hours and live music.
An activities coordinator is similar to an event planner. In this role, you oversee things like recreation on board and coordinating shore excursion activities. The BLS does not offer wage information for this position.
If you want to start traveling more — and get paid to do it — this can be a good role to consider.
Get expert advice on making more money - sent straight to your inbox.
It’s no secret that people on cruises like to drink. Many cruise lines offer a food and alcohol package as part of the booking process.
The amount of money you can make working as a bartender on a cruise ship varies greatly, depending on whether guests are expected to tip. But the average salary for bartenders is $29,380 annually.
Casino dealer
Working as a dealer at a cruise casino can be an exciting gig. These workers may oversee poker, blackjack, roulette, and more games.
Gambling service workers make $31,290 a year. However, as with tending bar, the actual wages for casino workers on a cruise can vary.
Many cruise ships have cafeterias and restaurants for when guests are in the mood for fine dining.
Cruise ship chefs may be involved in cooking and planning menus for guests and staff. Chefs or head cooks make $56,520 on average annually.
Deckhands help maintain the cruise ship. They may be involved in keeping these massive ships running, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, loading cargo, and getting passengers safely on board.
The experience required to work as a deckhand can vary greatly depending on the job description. The BLS does not offer salary information for this position.
Entertainer
Cruise lines hire all sorts of entertainers, from dancers to cover bands and magicians.
Working on a cruise ship can be a great way to hone and improve your craft or even take it in a different direction. The average wage for entertainers and performers is $29.67 an hour, which equates to about $61,713 annually.
7 Things to Do If You’re Barely Scraping by Financially
Entertainment director
Cruise ships also need people to manage their entertainers, particularly if the ship has a lot of shows and performances scheduled.
Entertainment directors may be involved in scheduling staff, planning performances, and doing administrative work. The average salary for entertainment/recreation managers is $67,220 annually.
Fitness instructor
Many cruise ships also offer various fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spin, and more.
For qualified instructors, this can be a great way to stay healthy, make money, and travel the world all at the same time. The average fitness instructor makes $45,380 annually.
Hair/makeup artist
On cruise ships, hair and makeup artists may work in spas, providing services to guests looking to get pampered while on board, and may be needed to work with the ship’s performers.
The BLS groups barbers, hairstyles, and cosmetologists together and states an average of $33,400 annual salary for these workers.
6 Clever Ways to Crush Your Debt
Hotel director
Since a cruise ship is essentially a floating hotel, many employees with experience working in hospitality are needed.
Hotel directors ensure that guests are comfortable and enjoy their experience. They may also be involved in planning and coordinating cruise activities.
The average salary for lodging managers is $61,910 annually.
Some cruise ships also hire nurses to provide care to passengers and cruise staff.
The amount of money nurses make on average usually depends on the type of nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) make $81,220 annually. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) make $54,620 a year.
Massage therapist
Many cruise passengers opt to take advantage of spa services. Massage therapists may work in a spa or travel to guests’ rooms with their equipment to provide massages.
Licensed massage therapists make just under $49,860 annually on average.
9 Things You Must Do Before The Next Recession
Cruise ships also frequently employ security staff to ensure the safety of guests and crew members. These workers may patrol the ship regularly and respond to any issues that come up.
The average salary for security guards is $33,030 annually.
Eating often and well is a big draw for many cruise passengers. Ships often have several restaurants on board and employ experienced servers to staff them.
Pay for these workers can vary, depending on the cruise line’s tipping policy. The average salary for a server in the U.S. is $29,120 annually.
Sales associate
Part of the beauty of the typical cruise ship is that it’s kind of like a floating mall, filled with gift shops and retail stores galore. Ships often need many sales associates to staff these stores.
Again, depending on the cruise line and the job, the pay for these gigs may vary. However, BLS data puts the average salary for a retail sales worker at $30,750 annually.
That’s not huge money, but perhaps it's enough for students to get ahead financially during breaks between school years.
Bottom line
Working as a cruise crew member is certainly not for everyone — lodging for staff can be cramped, days can be long, and you might be away from home for weeks at a time.
But for those looking to tap into a new source of income as they travel, it just may be a win-win situation.

Port of Seattle expects record outcomes for local economy as cruise season begins
by Karina Vargas, KOMO News Reporter
SEATTLE — The 2024 cruise season has kicked off Saturday with the first cruise ship, the Norwegian Bliss, arriving on Pier 66. The Port of Seattle said they are hopeful this will bring a boost to the economy and tourism to Seattle.
Not only are people excited for the start of the cruise season, but some business managers along the waterfront said this is crucial for their business to strive.
The Port of Seattle expects this season to bring record-breaking numbers with a nearly $900 million dollar boost to the economy and provide more than 5,500 hundred jobs.
RELATED | Cruise season starts in Seattle this weekend after record-setting year
"The jobs, people that will be put back to work. people coming to our downtown, that is the heart of why we invest in the cruise season," said Stephanie Jones Tebbins with the Port of Seattle.
The Port of Seattle is also working to become the greenest port in North America and to phase out seaport-related emissions by 2050.
Restaurants along the waterfront like ''Anthony’s Pier 66" are getting ready to welcome more customers through their doors thanks to cruises that stop here.
“It increases our sales by twofold we’re allowed to open all of our restaurants this time of year because of the cruise ships so we definitely look forward to it," said Willie Mitchell, who manages the restaurant.
The Port of Seattle said they expect more than 800,000 passengers and 275 ship calls this cruise season. Some of those passengers tell KOMO News they came early to explore what Seattle has to offer.
RELATED | Will Seattle see more cruise ships 'plugged in' for the 2024 season?
“I imagine people coming here will boost the economy because we came in a day early just to see Seattle before we boarded the ship," said Sharon Black, who was getting ready for the cruise.
The Port of Seattle also hopes to bring more passengers this year. Last year, the Port of Seattle reported they saw 1.7 million passengers, about 400,000 more than in 2022.
Industry leaders said cruise season is the driving force behind Seattle’s economic recovery at $4 million per sailing and $920 million per season.

Norwegian Viva Gets Anchor Reinstalled in Puerto Rico
- April 6, 2024
The Norwegian Viva saw its anchor reinstalled during a recent visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The work was done by Cruise Plus Services.
According to At Line, LLC, the local shipping agent that also was contracted for line handling and barge operations, the equipment was successfully reinstalled on the ship on March 31, 2024. It was previously said to have been removed for repair purposes.
The portside anchor was installed back with the help of a forklift and barge, which brought the equipment close to the Viva’s bow.
The procedure was carried out during the regular operations of the Norwegian Cruise Line ship. Presently based in Puerto Rico, the Norwegian Viva was starting a seven-night cruise to the Southern Caribbean on that day.
Currently wrapping up its winter season in the region, the Prima-Class vessel has been sailing from San Juan since December .
During the winter, the ship offered a series of seven-night cruises that explored several destinations in the region, including Barbados, Antigua, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and more.
On April 7, the Viva is scheduled to set sail on a trans-Atlantic crossing to Europe ahead of a summer program in the Mediterranean.
Marking the ship’s second season in the region, the schedule includes different nine- to 11-night itineraries that visit destinations in Italy, France, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, Malta and Turkey.
Following another trans-Atlantic crossing, the Norwegian Viva is set to return to Puerto Rico on December 15, 2024.
The ship then offers a second winter season in the Southern Caribbean, with seven-night cruises to destinations to ports in Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire and more.
A sister to the 2022-built Norwegian Prima, the Norwegian Viva entered service in August 2023 . Built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 142,000-ton vessel can accommodate up to 3,215 guests in double occupancy.
Continuing the Prima Class, Norwegian Cruise Line is scheduled to receive the Norwegian Aqua in April 2025 .

‘A Lot of Chaos’: Bridge Collapse Creates Upheaval at Largest U.S. Port for Car Trade
A bridge collapse closed Baltimore’s port, an important trade hub that ranks first in the nation by the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles.

Shipping in the Port of Baltimore
Monthly cargo handled by the Port of Baltimore
By Peter Eavis and Jenny Gross
- March 26, 2024
The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.
The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.
As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.
“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.
The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.
The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.
Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.
The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports
Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons
Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.
The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.
The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.
Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.
Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.
“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”
But other types of cargo could remain snarled.
Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.
He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”
“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.
If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.
“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.
Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.
“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.
A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.
The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”
The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.
State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.
Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.
The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.
An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.

Sights of Elektrostal: the history of the city, what to see, photos and reviews
Table of contents:, history of the city, attractions, engineering plant, church of the righteous john of kronstadt, city recreation and culture park, cinema gallery, avangard paintball club.
2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06
Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.
The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.
It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.
A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.
In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.
At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.
There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.
This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.
This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.
The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.
This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.
The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.
The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.
Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.
It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.
This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.
In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.
This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.
What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.
Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.
