Our family recently spent a few amazing days in St Croix in January. It was our first trip of the year, and a St Croix vacation was the perfect place to start the year.

St. Croix is in the United States Virgin Islands and is a wonderful part of the Caribbean. If you’ve never planned a trip to the Caribbean or even St Croix, then you’ll find this list of 10 things to know before planning a trip to St. Croix vacation useful.

St. Croix is an island in the Caribbean and is the largest and most populated island in the US Virgin Islands. It’s also home to two national parks, Isaac Bay and Salt River Bay, as well as several smaller nature reserves. St. Croix is known for its beautiful beaches, which are protected by coral reefs.

Here are 10 things you should know before planning a trip to this beautiful tropical island:

Driving In St. Croix

Renting a car is the best way to see the entire island on your terms. Do note that they drive on the left side of the road like in The United Kingdom or New Zealand, however, the driver also sits on the left as the cars are American.

This can be a challenge, so keep this in mind when planning your St Croix vacation. You will have to decide whether to get a rental car or not. You can also rent a car only for day trips if you need to.

St. Croix which is one of the US Virgin Islands is a US territory so there is no visa or passport required to visit. However, to fly back into the mainland US, immigration must be able to verify that you are a US citizen.

So make sure to pack a copy of your birth certificate when heading on a St Croix vacation, or if you have a passport that works even better. The same applies to children as well.

Take All Your Necessities

There is no Target or Walmart on St Croix, however, there is a K-Mart. If there are any specific things that you like to use when home, make sure to pack them so you don’t have to go from store to store searching for what you need.

We stopped by a grocery store and the prices made me gasp. So, when on your St Croix vacation, definitely keep in mind that prices will be higher because a lot of items have to be necessary.

Island Time

Nobody is in a rush anywhere – remember this while on the island! There is no rush when driving, expect to wait a bit longer for your than usual and more.

I enjoyed the fact that for the first time, I didn’t feel like I had to rush everywhere while on vacation.

What To Pack

St. Croix is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it’s also home to some of the most relaxing beaches. So if you’re headed there for vacation, you’ll want to pack light airy clothes so that you don’t overheat.

You should also bring along your pool and beach gear – swimming trunks, waterproof phone case, goggles, etc. And don’t forget sunscreen—St. Croix’s weather is hot all year round!

St. Croix is a beautiful island, and one of the things that make it so great is that the currency is U.S. dollars. This means you can travel to the island without changing your money, and you won’t need cash on hand other than tips!

Most businesses accept card transactions, so you won’t need to carry cash around unless you want to tip someone (and I highly suggest having some cash on hand for that!).

I was excited to learn that if I purchased alcohol, then I can check it in for free. I bought 4 bottles of alcohol as gifts for friends and family, and I was able to check it in for free on Spirit Airlines.

I picked it up from the Spirit Airlines baggage counter once I landed in Los Angeles, and the bottles were still in good shape although the box wasn’t.

Cell Service

If you’re heading to St. Croix, you may be wondering if your cell phone will work there.

The answer is yes! Your cell phone will work on St Croix just like it does when you’re home, so you can expect to be able to text and call without being charged any international fees as a result of your phone usage. I have Verizon and had excellent service the whole time on our St Croix vacation.

St Croix is very safe! At no point in time did I or my family feel unsafe while on our St Croix vacation. We didn’t hear of any theft or pick-pocketing stories.

I highly recommend a St Croix vacation for people who travel solo, with friends, and families too.

People from St. Croix are called Crucians, and they are some of the nicest and most friendly people you’ll ever meet. All of this just adds to the charm of the island making it a highly-rated destination, significantly.

Best Time To Travel To St Croix

The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons, from May to June and November to mid-December, when the weather is still calm, there are fewer crowds, and prices are lower. The peak tourist season is December to April, with relevant price increases. Visitors can enjoy events such as the St. Croix Food & Wine Experience and the Crucian Christmas Festival. April to September is a great time to see sea turtles lay their eggs. Plan your trip to St. Croix during the shoulder seasons for the perfect vacation.

The best times to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands are December through April during the dry season. The warmer months of March and April are even better.

But the best times also depend on what visitors plan to do when they get there. Some months are better than others for spending time on the beaches and in the water.

The worst times to visit St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands are September through November. These months fall inside the heart of the Virgin Islands hurricane season, also known as the rainy season.

The U.S. Virgin Islands rely heavily on tourism to sustain their economy. The islands welcome nearly 700,000 visitors each year by air and more than 1 million by sea, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The island chain is one of the most visited in the Caribbean. The majority of cruise visitors go to St. Thomas while hotel visitors go to St. Thomas and St. John.

The Dry Season

The dry season in the U.S. Virgin Islands runs from December to May, although May usually has higher rainfall than the other dry season months.

Many tourists choose to visit the islands at this time because of the likelihood of sunny weather and the elimination of hurricane threat. The annual Caribbean hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30 every year. September and October are the most active months for tropical storms and hurricanes.

Nearly 60 percent of tourists to the U.S. Virgin Islands come between December and May, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The peak tourist month is March during spring break from schools. December is a popular time for visitors for the same reason.

It rains very little during the dry season with an average of about two inches a month, according to the U.S. National Weather Service. May receives the most rain of the dry months, averaging just over three inches. That’s still moderate for a Caribbean island.

Virgin Islands Hurricane Season

The St. Thomas hurricane season officially begins June 1 and goes through the end of November at the same time as the Caribbean hurricane season. Tourism declines during this time because of the threat of bad weather.

September is the least popular month for visitors to come to the islands, followed by October. These two months are usually the worst months in the Caribbean for hurricanes, tropical storms and heavy rains. In the Virgin Islands, rainfall averages five to six inches a month from September through November or more than double the amount of the dry season.

Average Monthly Temperatures

Average daytime temperatures range from 85 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 90 degrees from July through September, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

Average nighttime temperatures range from 72 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 78 from June through September. Seawater temperatures stay between the daytime highs and nighttime lows. Swimming is usually comfortable for every month of the year, although there are some exceptions during cooler days.

These numbers are historical averages. Visitors may find that actual temperatures (and rain) vary somewhat from the averages.

Most and Least Popular Times to Visit

The chart to the right using data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization clearly shows that the most popular times to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands are March and December. March is popular because of spring break from schools; December is popular because of holiday vacations as well as winter break from schools.

The least popular time to visit is September, followed by October, during the worst months of the Caribbean hurricane season.

Other Tips on When to Visit

Although December through April are the best times to visit because of comfortable temperatures and low risk of rain, some travel planners may want other options.

Fewer crowds and lower prices can make rainy season months seem more appealing. But the threat of hurricanes can make travel during this time a risky bet. It’s a better option for last-minute vacations after reviewing the 10-day forecast.

From key holidays and events to seasonal price fluctuations, here is your ultimate guide for planning your visit to St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix.

Weather in the US Virgin Islands

Temperatures in the U.S. Virgin Islands are relatively steady year-round, with monthly averages ranging from the high 70s to low 80s). The dry season officially begins in December and lasts through May; come June, there is a seasonal shift in expected rainfall—as well as an increased chance of hurricanes and tropical storms. September and October are peak hurricane season in the West Indies, so travelers planning to visit during this period should book travel insurance if they’re concerned about their trip.

Though tourism varies on each of the three main islands in the USVI, the winter months are reliably the busiest time of year for tourists, which means packed beaches and restaurants across the board. With Carnival being one of the most popular events in the Caribbean , it's no surprise that each of the U.S. Virgin Islands has its take on the festivities. Carnival in St. Thomas kicks off in mid-April, St. John's is held in early July, and Carnival in St. Croix is celebrated during the holiday season.

The Crucian Christmas Festival  kicks off the first Saturday of December and hosts contests and the annual  St. Croix Boat Parade . Holiday celebrations are also highly anticipated on the island of St. Thomas, with the annual Miracle on Main Street featuring steel drums, carolers, and local arts and crafts.

One of the busiest months of the year in the USVI, January continues the events and festivals that kicked off during the holiday season. Part of the dry season, January is also the coldest month of the year, with an average temperature of 79 F.

Events to check out:

• The month-long Crucian Christmas Festival  on St. Croix concludes the first Saturday of the New Year—expect parades, calypso contests, and J'ouvert parties.

The average high in February is 86 F and the average low is 72 F. Peak tourism season is also in full swing this month, so expect to pay higher rates for hotels and airfare.

• The Annual St. Croix International Regatta , established in 1992, is a three-day regatta on Teague Bay at the St. Croix Yacht Club; it draws yacht aficionados from around the world.

The dry season continues into March, and this is also the last full month where the island will be packed with tourists. The average high is 86 F, while the average low is 73 F.

• Another three-day regatta occurs in March: The St. Thomas International Regatta , one of three races in the Caribbean Ocean Racing Triangle.
• The colorful Mardi Gras Annual Parade starts on the north shore of St. Croix and goes all the way to Cane Bay.
• Transfer Day commemorates March 31, when Denmark transferred the U.S. Virgin Islands to the U.S. Visitors purchase Danish products and visit the Danish forts and ruins remaining on the island.

April is one of the best times for travelers to visit; the weather is very similar to what you'd experience in March and the crowds start dissipating mid-month.

• April marks the start of Carnival in St. Thomas , with festivities continuing on until the beginning of May.

The tourists have left, and the average temperature is in the 80s. May is the month to visit for outdoor activities, including a Paradise 5K Run , Memorial Day 2 Mile Run, and a Coconut Cup SUP Race—all held on the island of St. Croix.

• The Ironman 70.3 Triathlon brings contenders from across the globe to St. Croix (and coincides with one of the four annual Jump Ups in Christiansted).

June is a wonderful time to visit, as the beaches are uncrowded and the cost of travel is severely reduced. While it is during the start of the wet season, the tropical showers in late spring and early to mid-summer are unlikely to last very long.

• Beginning in late June, Carnival takes place on St. John. Expect Cruz Bay to be filled with revelers in intricate costumes partaking in parades and food fairs. The ferries between St. Thomas and St. John are always packed with people heading out to the island to celebrate.

July sees an uptick in rainfall, though peak hurricane season is yet to come. Additionally, the St. John Carnival continues into July, as it commemorates the emancipation date of the enslaved people in the USVI: July 3, 1848. The next day is a culmination of all the preceding festivities, with celebratory fireworks on the 4th of July.

• The Virgin Islands Bartender Olympics were inspired by the movie Cocktail (starring a young Tom Cruise) and entail bartenders showing off their best creations.
• If you're more of a foodie than a cocktail aficionado, check out tastings and cooking demonstrations at the Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival , which occurs every July on St. Croix.

The hottest month of the year (average temps are in the mid-80s), August is also, fittingly, the sunniest month, with an average of nine hours of sunshine. If you’re worried about heading to the tropics in the summer, rest assured that the trade winds keep temperatures cool year-round. If you do book at this time, you will enjoy lower rates on hotels and airfare.

• The two-day U.S. Virgin Islands Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin is the biggest marlin tournament in the Caribbean and is held in St. Thomas. Though it attracts world-class fishermen and fisherwomen, it's open to anyone who wishes to participate.

September marks the beginning of peak hurricane season, so concerned travelers should purchase travel insurance ahead of their visit. Because the average sea temperature is 84 F , this is also one of the best months of the year to go swimming.

• Fitness lovers should consider participating in one of the three annual fitness events held on St. Croix: the Virgin Islands 10K Race, the Wall 2 Wall Spring Triathlon, or the Labor Day 5K Race.

Peak hurricane season continues into October, and travelers visiting at this time should pack rain gear: October is the wettest month of the year, experiencing an average of 6.1 inches of rainfall.

• The five-day Virgin Islands Fashion Week on St. Thomas features designers from the U.S., Caribbean, and West Africa; parties are open to the public.

The tail-end of hurricane season, November sees a drop in temperature, with an average high of 88   F and an average low of 75 F. This is the last month before tourist season picks up again, so it is smart for cost-conscious travelers to visit before the holidays.

• Visit St. Thomas for the annual Holiday Arts, Crafts & Music Festival , which includes live music, art displays, and free activities for kids.

Welcome to St Croix! You’ll land at the STX airport, which is equidistant from St. Croix’s two cities – Frederiksted and Christiansted.

You’ll want to pick up a rental car at the airport before heading to Frederiksted. Frederiksted is the smaller and quieter town of the two, making it a perfect way to ease into your vacation. Arrive in St. Croix and check into your hotel or rental property. Take some time to relax and explore your surroundings, then head to the beach for a swim and some stunning sunset views.

Rainbow Beach is located in Frederiksted and is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches on St. Croix. It’s the perfect spot to get some sunshine on your first day. You can bring your own or rent snorkel gear on the beach. There are also plenty of watersport options to choose from if you want a more exciting day on the beach.

At the end of the day, enjoy live music, sunset views, and a classic USVI rum runner at Rhythms at Rainbow Beach .

The US Virgin Islands are full of history to explore! After a day in the sun, it’s time to check out what Frederiksted has to offer!

Head to Fort Frederik, an 18th-century Danish fort located in Frederiksted Historic District. You can take a self-guided tour of Fort Frederik and see one of the many protected landmarks in St. Croix. The Fort Frederik Museum is also a great spot to visit while you learn about the history of St. Croix.

Just a short walk down the road, you’ll see Frederiksted Market Square . Wander around Frederiksted and enjoy the city area. This is where the action is! Market Square is home to restaurants, duty-free shopping, and sightseeing.

Before sunset, you can hit the Frederiksted Pier . This is a hidden gem for snorkeling and diving. You can fish off the pier, or just jump in the water to cool off! Most importantly, it faces the west, so you can watch the unobstructed view of the sunset over the horizon.

For the adventurous souls, this 5 miles hike can be a bit challenging, but one of the most popular things to do in St. Croix.

Annaly Bay Tide Pools are naturally formed pools found on St. Croix’s North Shore. You’ll want to head out early to avoid hiking home during peak sun times. Hike through the rain forest of St. Croix to the breathtaking views of the tide pools. It’ll be more than worth it!

Depending on the weather, the water can be rough and the terrain difficult to maneuver around, so be cautious during this trek. On a calm day, enjoy splashing around, swimming, or even do some snorkeling around the natural pools. Be sure to keep an eye out for turtles, stingrays, and other marine life!

You’ll begin and end this hike at the Carambola Beach Resort. This is a great spot to spend a night or two if you want to explore the North Shore a bit.

For day 4 of your St. Croix Itinerary, head to the East side of the island to Christiansted for downtown exploration. Christiansted is the busier and more lively town in St. Croix. You’ve enjoyed a few relaxing days exploring nature on the west side of the island. Now is the perfect time for some excitement!

Check into one of the many places to stay in Christiansted and hit the Christiansted Boardwalk and enjoy some waterfront restaurants and bars. In the morning, you can have coffee and brunch at Caroline’s Breakfast and enjoy lunch and dinner at 40 Eats and Drinks or Too Chez.

Don’t forget to do some shopping in downtown Christiansted and take advantage of the duty-free benefit in US Virgin Islands. US Citizens can take home $1600 worth of duty-free shopping every 30 days!

If you’re looking for more of the rich history of St. Croix, visit the oldest site in Christiansted and head to Fort Christiansvaern Historic Site , one of the best-preserved and largest colonial forts in the Caribbean.

Day 5 of your St. Croix Itinerary is sure to be a favorite! Buck Island National Reef Monuments is one of the most beautiful, lively, and colorful coral reefs in the Caribbean. Buck Island is a can’t-miss activity in anyone’s St. Croix itinerary, so be sure to plan your trip ahead of time.

The Buck Island National Reef is a protected monument located off the coast of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. The reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including sea turtles, coral, and tropical fish. You can even spot a few sharks circling around this reef!

You can only get to this island by boat, and there are many tours operating full and half-day excursions to this breathtaking piece of paradise. Visitors can snorkel or scuba dive to explore this famous reef. Buck Island National Reef is an extraordinary place to see the wonders of nature and experience the beauty of the underwater world.

When you get back from your excursion, stop by one of St. Croix’s many rum shacks for a refreshing drink before finding some classic Caribbean dining.

Make your way to the easternmost point of St. Croix…and the easternmost point of the US, Point Udall! Being the easternmost point, it’s also the first place in the US that sees the sunrise in the morning! Talk about a perfect way to start your day.

Point Udall serves as a monument that was built to celebrate the new millennia and marks the first spot of daylight in the US. As you can guess, not only are the views from the lookout point breathtaking, but you can also enjoy a scenic ride down when the sun is up.

From there, make your way to Isaacs Bay Beach for snorkeling and watersports. The trailhead to Isaac’s Beach begins near Point Udall and is only a short 20ish minute walk to get there. This beach will likely be quiet and calm and is the perfect place for snorkeling and swimming. It’s also great to cool off in the water after your short hike!

Although it’s always sad to end your vacation, especially a Caribbean one. For the last day of your St. Croix Itinerary, make the most of it by booking a later flight and spending one last day enjoying the Caribbean sands and waters in St. Croix.

A unique spot to hit in Christiansted is Protestant Cay (pronounced “key”). It’s a short ferry ride from the Christiansted Boardwalk and will take you to a private cay where you’ll find “Hotel on the Cay”.

Hotel on the Cay is one-of-a-kind, as it’s the only structure that lives on the cay. You can rent a room from Hotel on the Cay, or buy a day pass to enjoy the secluded, private-like island feel. There are watersports and rentals on the cay to enjoy a full day before your flight on this incredible beach.

Though I would suggest making the trip, if you want to stay on St. Croix for your last day, you can also try out Tamarind Reef Beach or Buccaneer Beach.

If you need to prioritize, the most important things to do in St. Croix are Buck Island Reef National Monument, Annaly Tide Pools, and exploring Christiansted and Frederiksted.

Really in a rush and need to squeeze everything in a long weekend? Or, maybe you want to spend more time exploring the other US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas and St. John. Either way, here’s a quick St. Croix 3 Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive early and hike to Annaly Tide Pools. Drive over to Frederiksted to explore downtown, visit the National Park, spend the afternoon at Rainbow Beach, or visit the historic sites.

Day 2: Make your way to Christiansted and hop on a tour to Buck Island Reef National Monument. Spend the afternoon at Hotel on the Cay and grab dinner and drinks in downtown Christiansted.

Day 3: Wake up with the sunrise at Point Udall, go to Issacs’s Bay Beach for snorkeling and swimming, then hop around some of the beaches around Christiansted before heading to the airport!

December to April is the best and most popular time to go to St. Croix. This is also the heaviest tourist season. If you want to avoid hurricane season and crowds, try heading to St. Croix in November or April/May.

Hurricane season officially goes from June 1 to November 30 in US Virgin Islands. You can find great deals during this time, and still enjoy the island, but you might run into some afternoon showers.

As long as there’s not a hurricane, and don’t worry – the Caribbean always has their eye on hurricane watch – the weather in St. Croix is always warm and enjoyable.

8 Day St. Croix Itinerary: An Island Full of Surprises!

When you think of the U.S. Virgin Islands, most people think of St. John or St. Thomas. St. Croix is often overlooked. After spending a week there, I am surprised! It has amazing food culture, beautiful hikes, some spectacular snorkeling sites, and very unique attractions. Follow my St. Croix itinerary to discover all these gems.

DAY 1: TRAVEL DAY TO ST. CROIX

We arrived at the airport in St. Croix (STX) at 1:30 pm.  

We rented an SUV from Centerline Car Rental. The check-in process was seamless, and we picked up the car on-site at the airport. We drove for about 25 minutes to our villa rental. Once we arrived, we dropped off our suitcases and headed to the local grocery store.

4 pm: Grocery run at Plaza West.

Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner: Today was a travel day, so breakfast/lunch was eaten at the airport/plane. We ate at the villa for dinner.

Overnight: The Pearl . The villa was perched on the cliffs, so every night we were lulled to sleep listening to the crashing waves. We loved our rental and will stay here on future trips to St. Croix.

DAY 2: ANNALY BAY TIDE POOLS

1:30 pm: After our morning adventure, we elected to make our own cocktails and relax in our private pool for the afternoon.

Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner: At the villa

Overnight: The Pearl

DAY 3: BUCK ISLAND + ZIGGY'S

1:45 pm: Visit Point Udall, which is marked by a giant sundial known as the Millenium Monument.

DAY 4: FREDERIKSTED PIER + RHYTHMS + MONKS BATH

2 pm: We checked out another tide pool called Monks Bath. Interesting but not as spectacular as Annaly Bay Tide Pools.

Breakfast/Dinner: At the villa

1 pm Lunch: Rhythms at Rainbow Beach. This beachfront restaurant is the “Original Home of the Lima-N-Da-Coconut” tropical drink. We had a few of these and also enjoyed some delicious, fresh Mahi tacos.

DAY 5: MT. EAGLE HIKE

4 pm: Martinis by the pool. FYI: St. Croix is home to Sion Farm Distillery , which produces the local Mutiny Island Vodka made from breadfruit. You can visit the distillery for a tasting or buy it at the local grocery store.

DAY 6: CANE BAY + RAINFOREST + SANDY POINT + SAND CASTLE

9:30 am: We snorkeled at the beautiful Cane Bay. We saw turtles and schools of fish. You can also dive “The Wall,” a vertical steep cliff.

11 am: We drove through the rainforest to see the beer (nonalcoholic) drinking pigs. Unfortunately, they were closed when we went.

11:45 am: Next we checked out Sandy Point Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

12:30 pm: Next stop was snorkeling at Sand Castle, where we saw some beautiful brightly colored starfish and many tropical fish.

2 pm Lunch: La Reine Chicken Shack. Best BBQ chicken ever! 

DAY 7: HIKE TO ISAAC & JACK BAY + CHRISTIANSTED

11:30 am: Once we arrived at Isaac Bay, we decided to cool off and go snorkeling. We saw some tropical fish and even a lobster.

2:30 pm: We checked out the colorful town of Christiansted and had some ice cream at What’s Da Scoop.

DAY 8: RELAXED MORNING AT THE VILLA + FLY BACK HOME

We slept in, had a late breakfast, and got one last swim in. A rainbow appeared before we had to drive off at 12 pm. Incredible! It was so hard to leave! 

3:35 pm: Flight back home.

Breakfast: At the villa

12:30 pm Snack: We swung by Thomas Bakery for some local coconut sweets and then headed to the airport.  

WHO WILL LIKE THIS ST. CROIX ITINERARY

• Beach lovers
• Snorkeling & hiking enthusiasts
• Foodies (St. Croix definitely has a great food culture)

BEST TIME TO VISIT ST. CROIX

• Avoid hurricane season from June-November. If you go during that time, buy travel insurance.
• April and May are ideal due to better temperatures, little rainfall, and slightly fewer crowds.
• December – March is also a nice time to visit, but it is peak season so prices will be higher. Also, “Christmas winds”  occur during this time which can make snorkeling difficult or impossible.

• None. All of the restaurants we chose did not require reservations.

WHAT I WOULD HAVE CHANGED

• We went during the pandemic at Christmas, and a lot of the food establishments we wanted to visit were either closed or had reduced hours. Places on our list to check out when we go back are Ital in Paradise, Savant, AMA at Cane Bay, 40 Eats & Drinks, Nidulari (food truck in the rainforest), and Singh’s Fast Food for local food.
• Cruzan Rum Distillery was closed when we went, but I would have loved to have done a tour and a tasting. Instead, we settled for buying bottles of rum at the grocery store and did our own rum tasting back at the villa rental.

Great question. I don’t use a light, but there are three things you need to make those underwater photos pop.

1. You have to be close enough to the subject. 2. You need some natural light filtering in. For example, it’s really dark under Frederiksted Pier. Go on a day when it’s sunny. The light will come in at an angle which illuminates the pylons, where all the brightly-colored coral is growing. The coral is really that colorful! 3. The third trick is to have a dive filter . I use a GoPro for all of my underwater footage. I pop the filter on to help pick up those vibrant colors underwater.

As the largest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix could easily be overrun with sun-seekers looking for a tropical vacation — no passport required. But despite its convenient access from the United States mainland, this island seems to fly under the radar.

We tapped local experts from the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), and favorite island hideaways like King Christian Hotel and Waves Cane Bay, to share their picks for the best things to do on St. Croix. From pristine white-sand beaches to a buzz-worthy culinary scene, here's what they say you shouldn't miss during your visit.

Sail and swim at Buck Island.

"St. Croix is a treasure trove of diverse encounters," says Joseph Boschulte, commissioner of tourism for the U.S. Virgin Islands. With that in mind, a trip to St. Croix isn't complete without exploring Buck Island, located just a short distance off the island's northeast coast.  Buck Island Reef is home to a unique underwater "trail" with plaques that help snorkelers and divers identify hundreds of fish species and other marine life that flourish along the mile-long reef. Local companies offer half and full-day excursions to the island and its protected ecosystem.

Dive at Frederiksted Pier — at night.

"It's totally unexpected, but Frederiksted Pier is one of the best places to dive on St. Croix, which is already an incredible destination for scuba diving," shares Kristina Leadbeater of  PADI . While this dive spot is spectacular any time of day, animals like octopi come out at night, making evening dives at the pier a truly unique underwater experience. The pier is inaccessible to divers when cruise ships are at port, so check with local dive shops for availability in advance.

Indulge in a burgeoning food scene.

As the unofficial food capital of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix offers diverse dining options packed with the best flavors of the Caribbean.  Savant  is considered among the top restaurants in the region with its Asian and island-influenced dishes, while  Galangal  showcases a French-Asian fusion flare. Patio space and frequent live music make  Shupe's On the Boardwalk  a favorite in Christiansted.

Visit Protestant Cay.

A ferry to and from the Christiansted pier whisks beachgoers to the white-sand beaches of Protestant Cay all day long. It's the most easily accessible beach for visitors staying in the heart of historic Christiansted, where you'll find hotel options like King Christian Hotel . This beautiful cay gets its name from its past as an age-old Protestant burial ground.

Tour a historic rum distillery.

St. Croix's Captain Morgan distillery has good name recognition, and it's a solid place to try local spirits, but plan to take a tour of  Cruzan Rum Distillery , too. Producing rum on the island for more than 250 years, this distillery is both a historic site and a great spot to sample iconic regional rum.

Celebrate with locals at the Crucian Christmas Festival.

"The island's month-long  Crucian Christmas Festival  combines traditional celebrations with regional customs for a non-stop party," says Boschulte of one of St. Croix's favorite annual events. The island-wide celebration includes concerts, parades, cultural activities, and pageants, while numerous fairs celebrate the best in local art and culture. There's plenty of delicious local food available at every turn, too.

Spend a day at Rainbow Beach.

About a mile from St. Croix's cruise ship dock in Fredriksted, Rainbow Beach is one of the island's most beautiful and lively stretches of sand. You'll find gear rentals for snorkeling and other water sports, plenty of umbrellas and chairs, and options for beachside bites making this the perfect spot to spend a beach day. Whether you prefer lazy hours on the beach or an active afternoon on the water, Rainbow Beach has so much to offer.

St. Croix's native fare pulls from local ingredients and beloved Caribbean dishes for a memorable culinary experience.  La Reine Chicken Shack  is well known for having some of the island's best johnny cakes and rotisserie chicken, while the bright orange  Cruzarican Spot  food truck, with its rotating menu of island favorites like potfish with plantains, is another must.

Explore hidden beaches.

"The east side of the island has the best beaches, by far," says Yadirah Ramos, a St. Croix local from Neighborhood Establishment , the community development and hospitality firm behind beloved island spots like King Christian Hotel and  Waves Cane Bay . "White-sand beaches like Shoys Beach are local favorites, quiet despite being so lovely," she says. Consider the all-natural Hams Bluff, too — what it lacks in beach amenities it makes up for with empty stretches of sand and stunning, dramatic scenery. 

Visit St. Croix’s botanical garden.

Over 1,500 species of tropical plants await at the  St. George Village Botanical Garden ; it's an ideal stop for visitors looking for a serene and shady escape in St. Croix. Covering over 16 acres on the ruins of one of the island's many former sugar plantations, this lush garden is just a short drive from Frederiksted and it brings new life to a historic destination. 

Visit Christiansted National Historic Site.

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site  spans seven acres and comprises multiple historic buildings, including customs and government structures from the colonial area. The impressive Fort Christiansvaern is the centerpiece of the site and the best-preserved of the Danish-built forts in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It's the perfect destination for history buffs, and plenty of locals and visitors make use of the area's well-kept lawns for picnics and events.

For a one-of-a-kind experience, bring your snorkel gear to Annaly Bay Tide Pools, where naturally-formed pools hide abundant marine life along a remote stretch of the island's north coast. It's a bit of a journey to reach this wonder: the 2.5-mile, one-way jungle hike is challenging enough to keep most people away. That also means it's not overcrowded. Adventurous visitors will want this spot on their island itinerary.

Shop in Christiansted.

The cruise ship dock in Frederiksted means the island's western side has its fair share of shops, but head to Christiansted for some truly special finds. Boutiques selling home goods, perfume, and locally crafted jewelry — like the island's iconic hook bracelet from  Sonya's — make it a one-of-a-kind spot for shopping. Colorful King's Alley has a high concentration of shops in Christiansted   and is worth exploring. 

Enjoy a sunset sail.

There's nothing like taking in a St. Croix sunset from the water. Local charters offer plenty of options for group excursions and private sailings year-round. During the winter months, visitors can board the historic wooden schooner Roseway for a sunset experience, and a chance to help the crew hoist the vessel's sails.

Sip drinks by the ocean at AMA at Cane Bay.

From its enviable waterfront location,  AMA at Cane Bay  serves up great cocktails and some of the most delicious food on the island. Sustainably sourced local ingredients shine, while the cocktail menu features both island favorites and new creations. There's no better way to end a day spent scuba diving or snorkeling than at beloved Cane Bay Beach. 

Kayak through bioluminescent bays.

Bush Tribe Eco Adventures

Glass-bottomed kayaks float through what feels like a sea of stars at Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve . St. Croix's annual foodie event takes place for just one evening in April every year, but it's well worth timing your trip to coincide with this fete. Considered one of the finest food and wine events in the Caribbean,  Taste of St. Croix  has been attracting thousands of hungry guests for well over twenty years. Attendees rub elbows with everyone from local restauranteurs and rum distillers to celebrity chefs, all while sampling tasty food and drink.

Explore Fort Frederik.

Completed in 1760, Fort Frederik is one of St. Croix's most important historic sites from its Danish colonial period. It was also the site where the island's governor declared emancipation in 1848 after a landmark revolt led by enslaved peoples. While Christiansted National Historic Site boasts more historic buildings to explore, Fort Fredrik's stunning red hue is remarkable against the blue ocean, and its proximity to St. Croix's cruise ship dock makes it a much more convenient stop for visitors arriving for just a day.

Dive at Butler Bay.

The waters of  Butler Bay  on the island's west side hide immense treasures for eager divers, making this one of the most fascinating dive sites near the island. Three distinct shipwreck sites are all accessible in just one adventure-packed dive, including a tugboat that hides eels and colorful corals. 14 Awesome Things to do in St Croix USVI

Is St. Croix on your bucket list for a chill island getaway? While this tropical gem is a popular cruise port, it deserves its own extended visit. You’ll want time to experience all the best things to do in St. Croix USVI, from beaches to awesome day trips.

Although St. Croix is the largest of the three main US Virgin Islands, it sometimes flies under the radar.  The is because the island is located about 40 miles south from its sister islands, St. Thomas and St. John .  The latter two are only about four miles apart and are frequently visited together, along with the neighboring BVI .

Therefore, my husband and I decided to finally give St. Croix its own dedicated visit.  Ultimately, the trip was completely worth it to witness the landscapes and culture of St. Croix that make it unique.  I loved the availability of awesome beach bars by the water, some of which also made amazing sunset spots!

This island truly offers something for every taste, whether you seek to relax, eat local food, or have an adventure. Without further ado, here are the 14 best things to do in St. Croix USVI.

The 14 Best Things to do in St Croix USVI

1. mermaid beach at the buccaneer resort.

St. Croix’s Mermaid Beach is located at the Buccaneer Resort, which is one of the nicest luxury resorts on the island.  This beach lived up to its dreamy reputation, with soft white sand gently leading down to small waves.  

The scenery was lovely, with the beach being flanked by St. Croix’s rugged hills on either side.  However, my favorite section was this tiny little black sand cove, which sat almost hidden on the left-hand side of the beach.   If a mermaid truly lived at Mermaid Beach, that is where you’d find her.  

The other nice perk about this beach is that it has its own restaurant at the resort.  That means there is beach service for ordering food and drinks, even for non-resort guests.

That said, if you are not staying at the resort, you will need to bring your own chairs and sit on the far-left side of the beach.  Don’t worry though – that section is still really nice. 

Unfortunately, coolers are also not allowed.  However, with the parking lot sitting a short distance away, you could consider simply leaving the cooler in the car. Then you could discreetly walk your food and drinks to the beach.

2. Buck Island

If you like to snorkel, then a boat tour to Buck Island is a must.  Our tour with Big Beard’s was awesome, first taking our group to one of the most beautiful beaches in existence, Turtle Beach.  

This beach had some of the most pristine, crystal-clear water I’ve ever seen.  Being that the water was so calm, it was a good space to practice snorkeling for new or rusty snorkelers.

Although I could have stayed at this picturesque beach all day, after 45 minutes it was time to snorkel.  We boated over to the other side of the island, which had choppier water and a little seaweed.  That said, I wasn’t missing the other side of the island for too long.  

What greeted me under the surface were some of the most magnificent coral reef formations I’ve even seen.  The corals were HUGE, with many estimated to be as much as 10,000 years old.  It’s no wonder that Buck Island Reef is considered a National Monument by the National Park Service.

Truly, this was the best snorkeling I’ve ever done, and I would do it again without question.  While we only did a half-day tour, the full-day adds a hike on Buck Island and lunch on another beach.

3. Dine During Sunset on the Christiansted Boardwalk

To dine on the water while witnessing an incredible sunset, head straight to the Christiansted boardwalk.  While the boardwalk features several dining options, we particularly enjoyed Shupe’s , where you can essentially build your own burger.  

While devouring the juiciest blue cheese and bacon burger, I witnessed the sky as it burst into spectacular hues of red and fuchsia. Eventually, the last light of twilight over the harbor faded into the horizon.  Even still, the water shined so clear and bright in the dusk, with light from the boats in harbor reflecting off the surface.

Bottom line – watching the sunset from the Christiansted boardwalk is one of the best things to do in St. Croix USVI, and should not be missed.

4. Try Local Vodka

Sion Farm Distillery makes their own vodka on St. Croix, called Mutiny Island Vodka. This unique vodka is made from breadfruit, a starchy fruit that was historically brought to St. Croix as sustenance for slave labor. 

The inspiration behind the name “Mutiny Island Vodka” comes from the HMS Bounty’s 1787-1789 failed mission to bring breadfruit saplings from Tahiti to the West Indies.  Upon the return from Tahiti, the ship had barely made it to Tonga when a group of around 25 men could no longer tolerate the oppressive leadership of their commander, William Bligh.  As a result, Bligh and his supporters were set adrift in the Pacific, from where they would miraculously make their return to England.

You can stop by the Sion Farm Distillery tasting room, which is situated in a windmill on the Christiansted boardwalk, for a brief tour before trying some vodka.  Tours are offered on a walk-in basis, every hour on the half-hour.

5. Point Udall

For a small adventure, drive out to Point Udall on the far east point of St. Croix. Point Udall was named in 1969 for Stewart Udall, who served as Secretary of the Interior under presidents Kennedy and Johnson. 

Point Udall also happens to also be the easternmost point of the United States, including all US territories. 

As you make your way east, you’ll notice the traffic thin and the landscapes become more arid.  Don’t forget to look out your window for some of the best views out to the sea that you’ll experience on St. Croix.

Upon reaching Point Udall, it’ll be hard to miss “Millennium Monument” towering in the center, which officially marks the easternmost point of the United States.  This giant stone sun dial was designed by Bill Rich to be unveiled in 2000. It symbolizes the first sunrise of the new millennium over US soil. 

Don’t forget to bring you camera to capture panoramic views of glistening blue water for miles.

6. Rainbow Beach Near Frederiksted

Western-facing Rainbow Beach is one of the dreamiest beaches on St. Croix.  During the day, this beach caters to sunbathers and jet skiers.  In the evening, Rainbow Beach is ideally situated for watching the sunset.

Those arriving onto St. Croix at the Frederiksted cruise port will especially love this beach, as it’s located just a mile away.

Parking can be found along the road just across the street from the beach.  It is possible to rent beach chairs and other water sport rentals from West End Water Sports right on site.  Two lounge chairs and an umbrella cost $40 for the day.

What I also love about Rainbow Beach is that it’s possible to buy a drink from the neighboring Rhythms beach bar to walk back to your chair. 

Alternatively, if you visit Rainbow Beach for sunset, then a visit to Rhythms for a casual dinner is a must.  Not only is the view amazing, but their menu features delicious beachy fare like fresh fish tacos and various other finger foods.  Make sure you order a side of the parmesan truffle fries, which come decadently dripping in truffle oil.

7. Explore the Rainforest

St. Croix is unique from St. John and St. Thomas in that it has its own small rainforest. Take a drive down Mahogany Road to see a totally different side of St. Croix and to hear echoes of the island’s history. 

Along the way, take note of the namesake Mahogany trees that line the road.  They were originally planted by the Danish who once colonized St. Croix over 200 years ago. 

Don’t forget to make a stop at the Mt. Pellier Domino Club for lunch.  Be sure to arrive early on Friday if you want to try the weekly roti special, which is one of the most delicious local dishes in the Caribbean.  It will run out!

8. Beer Drinking Pigs: One of the Oddest Things to do on St Croix USVI

If you are stopping into the Mt. Pellier Domino Club, you might want to inquire about the beer drinking pigs.  Yes, this is a thing.  It all got started inadvertently one day, when one of the OG pigs grabbed a beer right out of the hands of a visitor and guzzled it down.

Don’t worry – it’s only non-alcoholic beer, which will not harm the pigs, but it’s a crazy sight to behold.  Admission is $2 and it is an additional $4 to purchase the pig beer.  After that, you will be led to the pen for some mild entertainment.

Basically, as soon as you even hold the unopened can in reach of the pigs, one of them will grab it out of your hand.  They crush the can open with their teeth and suck out all the contents before chucking it away.  It’s a crazy sight with the foam spilling out of their mouths and you may walk away bewildered at the spectacle you just witnessed. 

It’s good fun though!  Keep in mind that these pigs are family pets, lovingly cared for, and never forced to drink “beer” if they aren’t in the mood.

9. Dinner at Hamilton’s

Did you know that Alexander Hamilton, aka American founding father and play namesake, spent some of his childhood and adolescence on St. Croix? Alexander spent much of that time working as a clerk, which would later serve him in his role of Secretary of Treasury.

The restaurant Hamilton’s gives a nod to this legacy on St. Croix while serving sophisticated meals in an upscale atmosphere.  This restaurant is located in Christiansted and accepts walk-ins, although it’s best to make reservations in advance. 

The inside is cozy and intimate, with a nice mix of modern and period touches, like rustic wooden details and a colonial ink font on the menu. I couldn’t get over the script “H” that was seared into the top of my burger bun.

10. Explore Historic Things to do in Christiansted, St. Croix USVI

Whether you take a walking tour or simply wander on your own, it would be a mistake not to explore Christiansted during your trip. The town was once a capital of the “Danish West Indies” or today’s US Virgin Islands , and houses the first National Historic Site in the territory.

Take an afternoon to explore Christiansted National Historic Site and learn about the period of Danish occupation from 1733 to 1917. The top things to do within these historic 7 acres on St. Croix USVI include:

• Visit Fort Christianvaern, the Steeple Building, and the Scale House
• View the Danish Custom House and the Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse

11. Watch the Sunrise

I make it a point to get up once to catch the sunrise during every visit to the US Virgin Islands . Not everyone likes an early wake-up call on their vacation, but I find it so rewarding to be virtually an audience of one while the sky erupts into color before my eyes. Don’t get me wrong – I usually go straight back to bed afterwards.

If you also don’t want to miss the beauty of at least one sunrise, it’s easiest if you stay somewhere right on the coast. This allows you to simply roll out of bed and look out from your window or patio.

It just so happens that St. Croix has plenty of condo options that will enable you to do just that. For example, Aaron and I stayed in this modern yet affordable condo along the north shore of St. Croix, where we could see both the sunrise and sunset views every day. Although the beach right outside our door wasn’t swimmable, we adored the constant scene of waves breaking through our patio doors.

12. Visit Cane Bay for Ombre Water and Beautiful Coastal Views

Cane Bay is the beach on St. Croix that most gives me that laidback feeling of being away in the Virgin Islands . The water was calm with so many shades of blue in an ombre pattern, fading from dark blue to aquamarine. As you look west down the beach, there are big hills with lush greenery stretching along the water in the distance.

This side of the island is low key and not overly developed with shopping and resorts. That said, there are some really great beach bars over here, which are perfect for lunch or simply spending an afternoon watching the waves while sipping a drink. 

I particularly like The Landing Beach Bar for a good mix of bar food and healthy salads, as well as Off the Wall for simple options like sandwiches and pizza.  The latter is also known to be a good sunset spot

Cane Bay is also a haven for divers and snorkelers.  Divers will love exploring the famous “Wall” just 300 yards offshore, which is where the ocean floor dramatically plummets more than two miles deep along the Puerto Rico Trench.  Snorkelers can see plenty of fish, as well as check out the living coral garden that is part of an ongoing restoration project. 

13. Hike to a Remote Beach

If you’d like to get a bit off the beaten path during your St. Croix USVI getaway, one of the coolest things to do is hiking to a remote, rugged beach like Jack and Isaac Bays. The trailhead is just a short distance from Point Udall and is easy to combine with a visit there.

Although the full trail is of moderate difficulty and 3.6 miles out and back, you could make it easier by stopping the trail short at Isaac Bay Beach. This beach requires a short downhill hike of less than one mile, although you could continue for a more challenging hike to even more remote Jack Bay Beach. Where a hat and bring water because there is little to no shade.

We only hiked to Isaac and I personally found the trail relatively easy, even with the uphill climb on the way back. This is also a favorite snorkeling spot, although the water can sometimes get choppy or have a current. Use your judgement, as there might not be anyone around to help if something goes wrong.

Full disclosure, there was sargassum at this beach when my husband and I visited in late May. However, I’m glad I didn’t know before heading out, otherwise we might have opted out of seeing St. Croix’s magnificent south shore.

We enjoyed the peace and quiet while relaxing in the shade beneath low trees and shrubs. I was happy to have sandals to avoid the little prickly spurs hidden in the sand near the vegetation.

Travel Savvy Tip

There are some parking spots next to the trailhead, but do not leave valuables in your car and consider leaving your doors unlocked. Unfortunately, break-ins have sometimes happened. Even if you have nothing to steal, keeping your doors unlocked might prevent someone from shattering your windows.

Don’t worry – we didn’t feel unsafe at all during our hike. These are simply petty crimes of opportunity that unfortunately target unsuspecting tourists.

14. Eat Parmesan Truffle Fries

Have you ever heard of having truffle fries, or truffle anything, at a beach bar? I personally never did before St. Croix, but I certainly wasn’t upset to see them on a few menus.

Even though I tended to find truffle fries at super laidback spots, they always delivered on flavor and deliciousness. I recommend that you also make having truffle fries during your beach vacations a thing!

The most memorable truffle fries I ate during our St. Croix trip was at Rhythms on Rainbow Beach during sunset. We also found them on the menu at Shupe’s, which coincidentally were also devoured during golden hour.

There are plenty of things to do on this list that’ll ensure you never get bored during a vacation in St. Croix USVI. Whether it’s spending days on the beach, strolling the Christiansted boardwalk at night, or day tripping to Buck Island, there are so many ways to experience St. Croix. It’s hard to fit everything into one week, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself returning to this intriguing island.

9 Reasons You Should Visit St Croix This Year (and some travel tips for you!)

Although it is not as widely known as some of the other Caribbean islands, it has a lot to offer in terms of natural beauty, history, and culture.

The size is one of the main reasons to visit St. Croix. You get to experience its unique character and get away from the more crowded tourist areas, or hang around the exciting, lively areas if you choose.

One of my favorite activities to do on St. Croix (especially on a hot day!) is to head out to the beach and take a soak in the refreshing water.

The beaches on St. Croix are far from average. Mesmerizing blue waters, powdery soft sands, and cool breezes await you at the shorelines of this fantastic island. Although there are many beautiful beaches, however, they are not all the same!

The best beaches on St. Croix each have unique qualities to offer .

Take Rainbow Beach in Frederiksted – it’s the perfect beach for a lively family day, with food, music, and sports right around the corner as you lounge and play.

On the other hand, Isaac’s Bay Beach is a secluded shore only accessible by hiking trail , a relaxing setting fit for couples or solo travelers .

Visit Buck Island offshore (my favorite place in St Croix) for one of the best Caribbean beaches for swimming, snorkeling, or simply taking in the amazing views and the warmth of the sun’s rays.

I’ve spent abundant time in Hawaii and the Caribbean , and still, nothing beats the beaches in St Croix, St Thomas , and St John . There are more than enough spots to explore, so go to as many as you like and find your favorite – we all have one!

3. Even Better Snorkeling Opportunities 

The underwater life on St. Croix is in a class of its own. The island has undergone huge measures to preserve its coral reefs and marine wildlife . Buck Island Reef, right off shore, is even a protected national park .

The results are exceptional snorkeling sites that literally submerge you into another world – one alive with diverse and colorful corals, tropical fishes, octopus, squid, rays, starfish, turtles, and countless other majestic sea creatures!

The best snorkeling locations here have crystal clear waters and untouched land. 

It goes without saying that St. Croix is a must-visit if you can’t get enough of ocean adventures. Avid snorkelers hop from one beach to the other and explore each shore for its hidden treasures.

For instance, you might dive “The Wall” at Cane Bay , venture to the underwater trail at Buck Island, discover the shipwrecks at Butler Bay, or snorkel alongside the Frederiksted pier – just to name a few!

For less experienced sea-lovers, there are plenty of shallow areas that are equally satisfying to snorkel in and spot a variety of exciting sea life.

4. Buck Island Reef National Monument

This little slice of paradise alone makes visiting St Croix worth your time. It also happens to be my favorite thing that I’ve ever done in the US Virgin Islands.

Buck Island Reef National Monument is located off the coast of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

The monument comprises two distinct areas – the coral reef itself and the surrounding waters of Turtle Bay (known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!).

The reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including turtles, fish, and coral. Snorkeling in this famous reef is the #1 thing to do in St Croix ! It beats out even the best snorkeling in St Thomas or St John .

Efforts are underway to protect and restore the reef, ensuring that it will remain a popular destination for generations to come. There’s even an overview look you can hike to for unique views atop this incredible island.

As I’ve mentioned above, this is my favorite activity in St Croix. I’ve not only done it once, but make a point to visit every time I go.

How to Get to St Croix

There are a few cities you can fly direct to Saint Croix from, like Charlotte and Miami. Most flights will take you to STX, St Thomas's airport. St Thomas is the main USVI and home to the capital, Charlotte Amalie.

When you arrive at St Thomas Airport you can take a hopper plane into St Croix.

The Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (HERA) is located towards the bottom middle of the island, about 7-9 miles from Frederiksted and Christiansted. You can pick up a rental car from the hotel, or easily grab a taxi from the airport to your hotel destination!

If you're able to fly direct from the US to HERA, St Croix is worth visiting simply for the ease of travel! Plus, not needing a passport makes it even quicker. Christiansted Harbor Seaplane Base is located right in downtown Christiansted, so it's a great option if you want to land and be as close as possible to your hotel if you plan to stay in Christiansted.

How to Get Around St Croix

It's easy to get around St Croix ; there are two main options to choose from, rental cars and taxis!

Rental Cars

Renting a car in St Croix is very affordable! You can find rental cars for $50-$100 per day, depending on the size of vehicle you're looking for. Car rentals are the most efficient way to get around St Croix and it's highly recommended that you do!

Don't forget they drive on the LEFT side of the road!!

There are many off-the-beaten-path beaches and adventures around St Croix. It's such a large island, you don't want to rely on taxis to get everywhere!

You also may have a hard time finding a taxi in those more secluded areas! Keep your freedom and enjoy convenience with your own rental car during your stay.
