This is my first attempt at writing a fanfic, any and all criticism is greatly appreciated. I obviously don't own Worm or anything else. Spoiler: Summary Summary: Post-GM Taylor is offered a second shot at life and resolves to do things right this time. She really shouldn't have expected things to be that easy, after all, even she isn't even 'Taylor Hebert' anymore, bad luck was something she was never short of. I wrote this fic because the Peggy Sue/Time Travel genre is one of my favorites, and Worm has a ton of potential for it IMO, and yet most of it is untapped right now. I was mostly inspired for this story by A Tale of Transmigration and For the Completion Bonus . So, now, without further ado… Prologue: We're s- so very small, in the end. The first bullet hit me from behind, where my mask offered no coverage, and I slowly toppled. The second hit me before I could fall, before there could be any pain. I never felt the ground. What somehow felt like both an instant and an eternity passed, and I was still falling through an infinite void. I remembered all the choices I'd made, had I even been in control in the end? What was it that Contessa had called me…? Khepri. Were her actions my own, or my passenger's? It didn't matter, there was no difference in between us, in the end. My passenger and I worked acted upon the same goals, same impulses, same everything. "To think that a host could achieve such synchronicity with a shard… That such a union could even allow a piece to topple their own whole… Truly astounding." A featureless voice replaced the absolute silence. I knew it wasn't speaking in any sensical language, and yet I understood it anyway, like the direct meaning was burned in my mind. I startled towards the voice's source: where once was an empty void, now radiated with a bronze-colored light, too bright to make out any of the speaker's features. "W-who?" I tried to speak. "You said you had regrets. What would you do, I wonder, should I turn back time,? Would you desire such a thing?" My eyes widened. That couldn't be possible, right? Reversing time was impossible, right? Except, with everything I had seen, I didn't believe in 'impossible', anymore. Hadn't I met someone, somewhere, a distant part of me called up, who could travel through time? I couldn't remember. But still, assuming I could undo everything and try again, would I? I thought back to everything I'd given up, to everything I accomplished, all leading up to the desperate fight against Scion, how I'd killed him, and to what I'd realized in my final talk with Contessa. In that moment, I knew what my answer would be. Somehow, the being in front of me knew, too. " Excellent. Truly, this world still shows such promise. I shall await to observe what you become." Then, my world faded in a bright bronze light. October 13, 2008 I awoke with a start. I felt the motion of a vehicle as I opened my eyes. It seemed like I had fallen asleep in the passenger seat of a car. There was something wrong with the whole situation. The city outside the car was intact, people on the streets were going about their business as usual, like the world didn't just end , but I couldn't feel any bugs in my range. I felt small : like everything seemed bigger than it should be. Then it me: the victory against Scion, my confrontation with Contessa and what happened afterwards, it all seemed so unreal that for a moment I wondered whether I just dreamed it all, if my whole life had just been one big nightmare. Then, the woman in the driver's seat seemed to notice my sudden activity and turned to look at me. I felt tears pool in my eyes as I gazed into the woman's form: even after everything that happened there was no way I wouldn't recognize the woman's face looking at me: my mother, it was my mother! My eyes widened as the reality of the situation settled in: I really was back in time! I took a moment to examine my own self. The first thing I noticed was that I had both my arms again. It shocked me to see just how small I was , 'had I really been so small, once?' I couldn't be older than nine. I admired my tiny hands, unmarred by my lifetime of struggles. I was convinced now, it didn't matter how it happened, it didn't matter how it happened, this was my second chance and I wasn't going to waste it. Didn't I tell Contessa I would do things differently if I had the chance? This was my opportunity to do better, to fix things. I was interrupted from my musings by my mother's voice. That kind and affectionate voice I had missed oh so much for all those years was directed at me again. But with it came a horrifying realization: I couldn't understand her! Whatever force brought me here and in a new body hadn't fixed the damage my mind had taken after what Amelia had done to my brain. 'Of course it was too fucking good to be true' I really should have known better. I had been given the ultimate second chance only for it to be made meaningless by my being too damaged, too broken to take advantage of it. I tried, to shout, to scream to the heavens at the injustice, but I no longer knew how. My silent panic attack went unnoticed as my mother had gone back to paying attention to the road. The car was passing by a large white and red building when my mother's phone went off. She diverted her attention only for a moment to find it in her purse, but it was enough. Neither she nor I noticed a clearly high driver barrel down the intersection while being chased by the several police cars. We also didn't see it crash right into us with a sickening crunch. I could barely comprehend what was happening as the car was violently thrown off the road, rolling over several times, and I was thrown from my seat and onto a sharp metal fence. 'This is it', I thought in despair, 'I came back and I'm going to die before I even get to do anything' . DESTINATION I saw the burning metal fence disperse before I could crash into it, and, for a moment, I felt the unmistakable sensation of bugs in my range. Then I impacted the ground and all I felt was nothingness.

Interesting premise, now just to wait and watch and see how this develops (I have seen FAR to many stories start good then either die when the author loses interest or when the author starts going down the retread old teritory without giving us something to keep us entertained route (an old character back in time doesn't work if theres no new developments to keep things fresh (doesn't even need to be story developments, could just be the time displaced character reacts differently/crack) Anyway- I look forward to seeing how this develops...

Can confirm. There's a lot of people that would be interested in this premise, but it needs to get going with at least 3-4k words before people start coming en-masse. So if lack of feedback is something discouraging then just tell yourself that people will come when they have something more concrete to talk about.

Yanslana

I agree. Interesting starting point. My first thought was like, "oh this isn't how the canon car accident happened, she was with Emma", then thinking about it I realized this is a good divergence point, especially with Taylor's current mental deficit(?). With this car accident her inability to understand, as well as her power, if it manifests, could be explained as a result of the accident causing damage to her brain. I also noticed when referring to 'mother' sometimes the PoV used 'my mother' and sometimes 'her mother', was this deliberately done to indicate the mixture mindset of Taylor & QA as one, or was that a grammar error?

Umbreon717

My current theory is that Taylor did not go back to her own body, but was sent to an au as a baby/toddler

It seems like she might be her own sister... Perhaps even mentally handicapped to explain why she can't understand language? I have no idea but I need to know, please update soon! ^^ Definitely watched, your prologue is amazing!

Good chapter. The story so far seems promising. Will be interesting to see where it goes.

I was right! She's her own younger sister! God, that sounds weird... So, how many chapters do you have pre-written or are you actually writing this fast? Also, the cliffhanger at the end was mean...

Very promising. The new power twist is utterly delightful. It's interesting that you chose to use a pint size draw back, I've only seen that once before and the story tanked. You seem to a solid handle on things.

Love Tay- I mean Zoe's new powers. Can't wait to see her teach Taylor how to be a cape.

Ferrite

Not a fork.

Alright, this could be really interesting. Kinda worried about her being too OP right out the gate(because being blind isn't really a negative as long as she can 'sell it' to keep her out of the running for being unmasked). Also her interaction with a C53 could be interesting not because of the whole Monstrous Cape but because it is an Eden shard. Kinda funny/sad if Scion created and released Zoe's shard as a way to track down his partners' shards in an attempt to find Eden. Edited due to typo.

I like the premise, but a couple things feel off. Firstly, it seems uncharacteristically negligent for Annette to let her nine year old daughter sit in the passenger seat of her car rather than in the back, though it does help explain why her injuries would be so drastic. Also, claiming Zoe helped "defeat" the Butcher implies either capturing or killing him/her, at least to me. Which should get more attention than just suddenly timeskipping back to Brockton Bay a few lines later, so perhaps saying she helped "fight" the Butcher would be a better word choice. Regarding the expository tone of the narration, I think that pairs well with the time skips; it would be more out of place if you were trying to immerse the reader in a single scene in the present. Since I think most readers (including myself) would agree with you that we're looking forward to seeing her back home and changing things up, it should be fine.

I'm a bit surprised by the timeskip, I think you should have introduced a few interactions with her family. It depends on the following chapters, but it might be strange if you introduce her first meetings with them after a timeskip of 2 years where it is expected that Taylor might have helped her at least to relearn how to talk.

As a first attempt this is quite good. Usually, you want to start the story as close to the end as possible, as in, near the first event that will lead to the story's end. As things stand now, you skipped two and a half years of the story to summarize how things came to be, when you would have been better off starting at 2010 and giving us information on what happened as you went along. But that's a very minor thing, and I hope you continue writing this ^^

Time Paradox said: The biggest obstacle in Brockton Bay for every kind of action aimed to change something is without a doubt Coil. Sure you may succed at first, at whatever you try to do capture capes, dismantling gangs etc but the moment you step on Coils toes he is gonna decisivley act against you. And he will succed. Because the moment you became an entity, there is even a rumor of you out there he will have one of the best thinkers (Tattletale) out there investigate you, most likely without her even knowing she did it, and then it is only a matter of time before he knows everything there is to know about you. Most likely directly from your mouth in a discarded timeline used to torture you. So for every SI, time-traveler, Peggy Sue or pretty much every main character, who becomes aware of the exact mechanics of Coils power, in the Worm-verse there should always be only one single goal in their mind until they achieved it without fail. How am i able to kill Coil in the fastest surest way possible before he even knows i exist. Failing that, you have to put constant pressure on him without a single second of reprieve, so he loses the initiative where his power is the strongest and you force him into a constant corner,on the defensive where his power is the weakest that way he has to start owning his mistakes at least in one timeline. And if you can keep it up you might even win. The worst thing you can ever do against Coil is bide your time, because it will result in you losing all the time, everytime. Click to expand... Intrepid Travel Blog

The joy of travel adds up to more than just great memories and good times for this traveller

the 100 time travel fanfic

At 74, Barbara Threet has visited 77 countries and counting. Along the way, she’s made more than 100 donations to important causes around the world through The Intrepid Foundation . We chatted with her to find out why she gives.

It was just over 12 years ago, on Barbara’s first Intrepid trip – a month-long adventure through Thailand and Vietnam – that her philanthropic journey kicked off. The trip included a visit to a local non-profit in Vietnam called KOTO. Barbara and her fellow travellers learned how the grassroots organisation in Hanoi was working to provide hospitality training and job opportunities to disadvantaged youth in Vietnam.

The way she tells it, seeing how other people lived during her travels and hearing how the organisation worked, triggered a lightbulb moment that changed the way Barbara approached life from there on out.

‘Many people don’t travel to places where they see the world being really different,’ she says, ‘and I think that makes it hard to understand what’s really going on in the world. It’s hard to understand what life is like in India, for example, if you haven’t been to Delhi. It’s just, it’s not real – it’s too different than what it is here.’

the 100 time travel fanfic

‘Here’ in Barbara’s case is the East Coast, USA. Back home after that trip, she made a donation to KOTO through The Intrepid Foundation .

‘If you’ve seen how people live in other places and what matters to them, it’s hard not to feel some sense of connection with them,’ she says.

Since that trip, she’s been on nearly 30 more Intrepid adventures and has made over 100 more donations to The Intrepid Foundation, all in the spirit of that moment she had 12 years ago in Vietnam.

A whole world out there

Barbara hadn’t travelled much out of the US until the early 2000s but had a lifelong desire to see Vietnam. She was in her late 50s when she found an Intrepid trip that would take her there.

She says, ‘So my initial thought was, ‘This will get me to see Vietnam, and that’ll be cool’, but then I realised there was a whole other world out there.’

She recounts that first Intrepid trip over a decade earlier. Like the current South East Asia Loop trip, she tells me her adventure began in Bangkok, Thailand. Before joining the group, she arrived a few days early to get accustomed to the time zones.

‘I remember I got there late in the evening’, she tells me. ‘And I’d arranged an airport transfer to my hotel, so I barely saw anything that night,’ she continues.

‘I was exhausted, but I remember getting up in the morning and looking out my window on the seventh or eighth floor and thinking, ‘I can’t go out there. I cannot, I just can’t do this,’’ she pauses before continuing. ‘But that whole trip was just amazing. It was mind-boggling.’

More mind-boggling moments and meaning

Fast-forward to today, and it sounds like Barbara’s on the road more than she’s at home. When we connect via video call, she immediately tells me she loves talking about all things travel. The childlike glint in her eye and what looks like years of framed travel mementos hanging on the wall behind her tell me she’s not lying.

With excitement, she says she’s just gotten back from a trip in Central Asia , how she’s joining Intrepid’s Eastern Europe Explorer adventure in a few weeks, has plans to visit Laos and Cambodia at the end of the year and has already locked in a trip to Africa in 2025.

the 100 time travel fanfic

Barbara says her donations are ‘definitely inspired by travelling.’ And, with more than 50 impact partners around the world, The Intrepid Foundation makes it easy to give to the causes that matter most to her. Many Intrepid trips include special experiences where travellers like Barbara get to meet and connect with local Intrepid Foundation partners who are creating an impact in the destinations they visit.

Barbara tells me that many of her donations, just like her very first, are inspired by the partners she connects with during those trips. Other contributions, she says, have been made because the causes simply ‘move her heart.’

‘I’m 74. I get to be an independent woman who’s had a pretty amazing life – all this crazy travel and family and all that stuff – but many women just don’t have that. But whatever I can do to make life a little easier for women and kids matters a lot to me,’ she says.

If you’re giving 25 bucks a month, for most of us in America, that’s one meal out – if we’re lucky – but then over a year, you’ve given $300.

The Intrepid Foundation provides travellers the option to give recurring monthly donations to their partners. Something Barbara tells me takes the admin out of giving and allows her to make a more significant difference, sometimes without even realising it.

‘If you’re giving 25 bucks a month, for most of us in America, that’s one meal out – if we’re lucky – but then over a year, you’ve given $300. And it probably makes a real difference in these other countries,’ she says.

She continues to explain why giving to different organisations around the world gives her a particular sense of fulfilment. ‘One of the things, frankly, that I really like is that if I give $25 a month to an organisation in the US, it makes little difference. It just doesn’t have the scale compared to our income,’ she says. ‘$25 in Nepal, for instance, makes a real impact,’ she adds.

‘I mean, I’m not wealthy. I’m not starving – but I’m far from wealthy, but I can give what I can give, and in other countries, it makes a real difference,’ she says.

Intrepid matches all post-trip donations made by travellers as well as all ongoing monthly donations, doubling the difference that Barbara’s generous support makes.

From blue carbon to bikes

I rattle off the list of Intrepid Foundation partners she’s currently set up with recurring monthly donations. ‘ Blue Carbon Lab , East African Wildlife Society , Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation , and MandaLao Elephant Conservation , is that right?’ I ask.

She nods before interjecting, ‘I’d like to start donating to World Bicycle Relief , too – in honour of my grandkids who like bikes.’

I smile at how simply she puts it and how refreshing her enthusiasm for giving is.

It’s not unusual for travellers to find a deeper sense of connection with the world when they get out there and see it for themselves, but I can tell from our short conversation there’s something truly special about Barbara.

By filling her spare time with exploration, having an eagerness to learn more about different cultures and doing good for others along the way, Barbara has cracked the equation to living a fulfilled life.

Looking to tap into the joy of giving for yourself? Find an Intrepid Foundation partner that moves your heart and make a one-time donation or set up monthly giving .

Beautiful Peak District village frozen in time for half a millennia

This stunning English village is like taking a step back in time.

  • Updated 14:50, 28 Aug 2024

Pretty stone cottages, a tranquil mill pond and an historic hall at its heart - strolling into the village of Tissington is like taking a step back in time.

There are no street lights or road markings, indeed there are barely any modern developments at all here. It makes it an idyllic spot in the midst of the Peak District National Park, and a honeypot village for visitors come the summer months. Not least thanks to its popular tearooms which opens daily for visitors next to the historic Tissington Hall. This is also one of the most unusual villages in England.

For it is one of the handful of places to have been owned by the same family for the past 500 years. Sir Richard Fitzherbert is the current incumbent of the historic 17th Century Tissington Hall - and it is his life's work to keep the village he owns thriving. He inherited the estate at the age of 25 from his Uncle back in 1989.

He owns all the properties in the village, well, all except for five cottages that an ancestor "lost over a game of cards" back in the 18th century, reports Manchester Evening News . The remaining 40 cottages and 10 farms are rented out to tenants who Sir Richard says all pull together to make village life as idyllic as possible.

There are also now seven holiday lets within the village that tourists can book out to make a holiday of it in this picturesque part of the Peaks. Although Sir Richard is the first to admit that owning and running a 2,000 acre village is far from as glamorous as it may sound. He says he has ongoing battles with council planners over making any improvements at all in the village - such are the strict rules around developments in a Conservation Area like this.

He says: "We live in a Grade II star listed building in a conservation village in a National Park - so we have restrictions upon restrictions. I can hardly sneeze without permission. We are one of the very few villages that is frozen in time - that is partly because a lot of things can't change due to the planning rules.

"There are no yellow lines but perhaps there should be! We had to paint some lines ourselves because people were driving so fast through the village. Technically it's a 60mph, but we put our own signs up to say 'please drive slowly' at two ends of the village. There's no street lights here, so you have to have a decent torch.

"We're not allowed things like solar panels, that is a bore, as we want to make things more sustainable. It's been my mission to get them for 15 years and finally I've been allowed some on the hall roof. But I've been denied a wind turbine on one farm which would have helped things considerably.

"We have to make decisions on how to make things more efficient and get properties up to date, but there doesn't seem to be any flexibility in the system to be able to do that."

Although he has been able to host weddings at Tissington Hall in recent years - something he hopes to improve on and expand in the years to come. He says: "The village tearooms is thriving at the moment, and we've got plenty of weddings but can also do more. We first got a licence in 2003 and started with small weddings but that has morphed into a semi-permanent marquee that we can use in the grounds through the summer which seats up to 140."

The carriage house next to the hall has been converted to hold small meetings or events, and couples can even have their wedding in the dining room of the main hall which can seat 20 guests. Sir Richard says: "If they're interested in history they can even have a talk from me at their wedding." Over the bank holiday weekend, thousands of visitors are expected to head to the village to walk through some of the prettiest gardens in the cottages as part of the National Garden Scheme Open Gardens day.

There will also be a craft fair in the village hall with a host of local crafters showing off their wares. There will even be balloon rides taking place. There is still a candlemaker in the village, but the once-popular sweet shop and butchers both closed last year. Sir Richard hopes to bring new businesses to the area in time to come. Sir Richard lives at Tissington Hall with his wife Fiona, Lady Fitzherbert, their four children, five dogs and two kittens.

But other frustrations includes, he says, being constantly knocked back over requests to create a car park in the village to accommodate all the visitors. Currently there is one pay-for car park at the far end of the village which costs £4.50 but is operated by the Tissington Trail, not by Sir Richard. On busy days visitors simply cram along the country lanes parking for free instead, he says.

Sir Richard says: "Our frustration is we can get 100 cars parked in the verges, and that is bringing us no income for the village. I've been trying to get a car park for years but planners won't allow it. The planners don't really care and I'm fed up. There's a car park on the Tissington Trail, the old Ashbourne railway line, and they charge £4.50. But people don't want to pay money and so park on my verges for nothing. I feel that spoils the village as it looks like a car park on busy days. We have the busiest weekend of our year over August Bank Holiday so we'll have to open up a field as a car park and we'll all be there to try and manage it for everyone."

But Richard is determined to keep bringing more visitors into the village and into the Peak District in general. He's so passionate about the area that he has become the chair of the Peak District and Derbyshire Tourist Board. Next year he will also become Derbyshire's High Sheriff.

"I do all I can to encourage people to come into the village. I want to encourage people to come to the Peak District, but sustainably as well. I want the businesses and all my people to thrive here. We want to put the Peak District on the map. When I become High Sheriff I'll be the seventh member of our family to do so, which is a great honour. One of the things I will be pushing is the hospitality side of things, and also just to be kind to people." For people living here, they agree that Tissington is a wonderful place to live. When properties come up (which is rare) people apply for a tenancy with Sir Richard.

Mervyn, 76, and Debbie King, 58, have lived here for nine years as tenants of the estate. Debbie said: "It's a beautiful part of the world and sir Richard is an excellent landlord. It really is a chocolate box village."Mervyn added: "We've been here nine years and we have no desire to go anywhere else now."

How to get there

Tissington Village is near Ashbourne in Derbyshire, if you're driving use the postcode DE6 1RA for sat nav.

For those opting for public transport, the 442 Bus runs from Buxton to Ashbourne six times a day, and as Sir Richard notes: "it's one of the prettiest routes of the country. It goes through all the villages. I wave at the bus drivers every day when they come through the village as I'm so pleased to see them."

The Tissington Trail now runs on what was once the railway line to the village. This is now a popular walking and cycling route. The full route is 13 miles running from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, with Tissington a stop off along the way.

The Tissington tearooms open daily from 10.30am to 5pm.
