Siouxsie Sioux Announces Return to Stage After 10 Years

Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees will return to the stage in 2023. Her first show since a 2013 Meltdown performance is set to take place at Latitude Festival in the East of England on July 23. Pulp, Paolo Nutini, and George Ezra are headlining the festival, which begins on July 20.

The punk singer last released music in 2015, when she recorded a song called “ Love Crime ” for the Hannibal TV show. Her last album, and first officially released as a solo artist, was 2007’s Mantaray .

Siouxsie Sioux Is Having A Moment Thanks To ‘Wednesday,’ Here’s Everything Gen Z Needs to Know About This Trailblazing Goth Rocker 

 While goth culture has never fully disappeared, it certainly is under a spotlight right now, with the growing popularity of Netflix’s series Wednesday , starring Jenna Ortega. For her role as Wednesday Addams, Ortega choreographed a dance that would end up going viral on TikTok. When asked about how she came up with the dance, Ortega stated she pulled inspiration from videos of goth kids in clubs from the ‘80s, and pointed toward music legends such as The Cramps, New-wave singer Lene Lovich, and queen of the night, Siouxsie Sioux. 

Siouxsie Sioux, born in 1957 in London, England as Susan Janet Ballion, is best known for her gothic-rock/post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. The group rose to fame during the historical UK punk movement in the late 1970s, and went on to become one of the most successful bands that originated in that era. According to journalist Kris Needs , Siouxsie and the Banshees can be described as “Fearlessly experimental but boasting an uncanny pop sensibility, their 20-year reign would see them invent goth while regularly enlivening the charts with edgy, classic singles.”

While many within the goth subculture debate who it was that actually “invented” what we now know as goth, there is no question that Siouxsie and the Banshees created a lasting impact with their quintessential hits such as “Spellbound,” “Halloween,” and “Peek-a-Boo.”  The group even broke into top 40 radio with singles such as “Dear Prudence” (a cover of The Beatles song) and “Hong Kong Garden,” which reached number 7 on the UK singles chart in 1978. 

Siouxsie Sioux and friend and future Banshees bassist Stephen Severin bonded over their love of the band Sex Pistols . They were loyal fans and followed the band on tour, and were even part of what is now known as Bromley Contingent , a group of punk young adults who were devoted to the Pistols. Their membership in this group would lead to the formation of Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1976 with help from Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren.

Siouxsie and the Banshees was not the only creative project of Sioux’s, as she and Banshees drummer (and former husband) Budgie also worked together to form the band The Creatures, which began as a side project and then blossomed into a full-time gig after The Banshees officially dissolved in 1996. Siouxsie Sioux has also put out some incredible solo work, ranging from haunting mid-tempo hits like “Love Crime”, to more grungy, rock-centric songs such as “Into a Swan.”

Siouxsie’s easily recognizable look has served as inspiration for goths everywhere. She can most often be seen wearing fishnets, leather, spiked jewelry, and wearing her hair in a spiky updo. Her iconic dark eye makeup pattern has become a recognizable image among goths and in pop culture as a whole, appearing on T-shirts , stickers, patches, and album covers. Sioux stated this in a 2005 interview on her iconic fashion , “I think it was probably one of the first looks and attitudes to come along to empower women, and I know I felt so powerful and strong walking out in the street. Nothing frightened me.” In this same interview , Siouxsie expressed her love for “Vivienne and Malcolm’s shop” in reference to the fashion shop owned by Malcolm McLaren and the late legendary punk fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. 

Siouxsie’s success as a musician was no easy feat, as the music industry was not ready to accept women as global superstars who didn’t fit into a certain mold. According to Sioux , “The industry found it totally unacceptable that women could run around looking and sounding like that and with that attitude.”

And now, the moment that goths and punks have been waiting for for a decade has finally arrived– Siouxsie Sioux is back! After not performing since Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival in 2013, Siouxsie and the Banshees have just announced a European tour in addition to a stop in the US. Siouxsie will be headlining Cruel World Festival on May 20th in Pasadena, CA along with Iggy Pop. More information on Siouxsie’s tour dates and how to buy tickets can be found here . 

Siouxsie and the Banshees also released their ninth compilation album, All Souls, in October of 2022. The album includes some of The Banshees greatest hits that also celebrate the fall season. We’re hoping this means we may also be getting a Siouxsie and the Banshees full reunion tour soon!

Regardless, we’re happy to see Siouxsie reclaiming her rightful place in the moonlight where she belongs. With her mesmerizing performances, powerful lyrics, and subculture-defining looks, Siouxsie is a feminist icon, as well as a role model to all who strive to be a creative force and look amazing while doing it.

Siouxsie, Iggy Pop, Love and Rockets to headline 2023 Cruel World festival

Two punk-adjacent pioneers — Siouxsie and Iggy Pop — will headline this year’s edition of Goldenvoice’s Cruel World festival in Pasadena.

Cruel World taps into the many veins of goth-rock, new wave and post-punk that ruled airwaves and the underground in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The 2023 installment, scheduled for May 20 at Brookside at the Rose Bowl, will also feature a number of high-profile returns to U.S. stages after many years away.

Siouxsie, the singer for canonical U.K. act Siouxsie and the Banshees, hasn’t performed in North America in 15 years, nor released solo material since 2007’s “Mantaray.”

Also scheduled to appear at Cruel World is Bauhaus offshoot Love and Rockets, which hasn’t performed live since 2008.

While Iggy Pop has, gratefully, never left the road for long throughout a career spanning six decades, he’s become one of rock’s quintessential lions in winter. Pop released a new punk-leaning album, “Every Loser,” earlier this month.

British new-wave pioneers Billy Idol, Adam Ant, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Human League, ABC, Gang of Four and Gary Numan, plus L.A.’s the Motels, round out the lineup alongside contemporary inheritors like the noirish synth duo Boy Harsher, the Soft Moon and GVLLOW.

Last year’s festival featured sets from Morrissey, Public Image Ltd. and Blondie.

Tickets for Cruel World go on sale Friday, Jan. 27, at noon P.T.

Back in 2008 Siouxsie and Banshees played at Lokerse Festeen in Belgium. As one of the influential rock band’s rare returns to the stage, the set was extremely popular amongst festivalgoers. The crowd jostled to get as close to the stage as possible. The anticipation was almost tangible amongst the cramped mass. As the stage lights darkened the audience drew in breath, as though it were a single organism. Then, the soft guitar intro of ‘Pure’ began to trickle forth from the stage. Siouxsie’s distinctive cry echoed forth from the darkness. Then, as ‘Jigsaw Feeling’ kicked in, the lights went up, and the crowd let forth an almighty roar.

Siouxsie and the Banshees pulled in a diverse crowd. Whatever bands had attracted the various festivalgoers to Lokerse Festeen, the audience seemed united in realising the significance of this set. Young musical explorers stood alongside those who could remember the band’s 1980s heyday. Who could forgo the opportunity to see the group famed for producing some of the most pioneering music of the post punk era, and for leading the way from punk to goth?

Siouxsie involved the crowd like an old pro and soon, even those too young to remember them, were mirroring her idiosyncratic hand movements.

Siouxsie Adds First London Show in Over a Decade to Growing 2023 Tour Itinerary

S iouxsie Sioux , the legendary frontwoman of Siouxsie and the Banshees, continues to expand her solo live comeback for 2023 with the addition of a London performance. With the inclusion of her hometown show, the total number of planned performances this spring and summer has reached an impressive fifteen so far.

It has been a decade since Siouxsie last performed live, with her last appearance taking place at the Yoko Ono-curated installment of the Meltdown festival in London in 2013. At that event, Siouxsie surprised fans with an unannounced, full rendition of Siouxsie & The Banshees’ 1980 album ‘Kaleidoscope,’ alongside hit songs like “Cities in Dust,” “Spellbound,” and more!

Fans will be thrilled to learn that Siouxsie will also perform at the Troxy in London on September 7. Tickets for the show go on sale on April 27 at 10 am and can be purchased here .

This announcement follows her earlier confirmation of a UK performance at Latitude Festival in July and additional live dates in Europe. Notably, Siouxsie will have one U.S. performance as part of her comeback tour, headlining the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, California, on May 20. Siouxsie is also set to kick off the Summer Nights At The Bandstand concert series in Glasgow on July 25.

With this exciting lineup of festival appearances and shows, Siouxsie is sure to make her presence known throughout 2023. Both old and new fans are excited to see what the legendary Siouxsie has in store for them, especially given the rarity of her U.S. performance.

Siouxsie Sioux has confirmed her first live performance in a decade.

The former Siouxsie & The Banshees singer will headline the 2023 installment of the Latitude Festival at Henham Park in Suffolk, UK. The four-day festival, taking place between July 20 and 23, also promises performances from Pulp, Paolo Nutini, George Ezra and more. Tickets are now on sale .

Sioux last performed live at Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival in 2013. Her most recent recording came in 2015 with the release of a song called “Love Crime,” which soundtrack the series finale of the UK series Hannibal .

Earlier this year, Siouxsie and the Banshees announced All Souls , a new archival album celebrating the autumn season. Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega also credited the band for inspiring her viral goth dance.

Latitude Festival Director Melvin Benn commented: “What a privilege it is to welcome the iconic Siouxsie Sioux to the Latitude Festival. Siouxsie has been an enduring trailblazer, and her impact across musical culture is colossal. Uncompromisingly defiant, Siouxsie’s powerful body of work is incomparable. There has never been a live performer like her, and there probably never will be!”

The first time Siouxsie graced the stage as a performer at the 100 Club Punk Festival back in 1976, she sang a chaotic punk-inspired rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer.” That evening triggered a unique career with Siouxsie & The Banshees that would take raw punk towards its refined offspring, post-punk.

In 2007, Siouxsie released her debut solo album, Mantaray , and the following year, she appeared at the World Soundtrack awards with the recently passed Angelo Badalamenti to perform “Careless Love” from John Maybury’s film The Edge of Love .

Most recently, Siouxsie took to the stage at London’s Royal Festival Hall as part of Yoko Ono’s ‘Meltdown’ in 2013, to perform an unprecedented two sold-out shows as a guest of the famed curator. Siouxsie surprised the 5000 attendees with an unannounced complete and full rendition of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ acclaimed third album, Kaleidoscope , alongside a myriad of hits from “Face to Face” to “Here Comes That Day.”

Siouxsie Sioux Returning to Live Performance for First Time Since 2013

Siouxsie and the Banshees frontwoman Siouxsie Sioux will make her first live appearance in a decade at the U.K.’s Latitude Festival, which runs July 20-23, 2023, in Suffolk. The influential artist’s last major concert was in 2013 at the Yoko Ono-curated Meltdown Festival in London, during which she performed the Banshees’ classic 1980 album Kaleidoscope in its entirety.

Sioux, now 65, joins Pulp, Paolo Nutini, and George Ezra as Latitude headliners. The Kooks, Metronomy, Paul Heaton, and Jacqui Abbott, Black Midi, Lightning Seeds, the Proclaimers, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Young Fathers round out the lineup.

Beyond a brief 2002 reunion that included a performance at Coachella, the Banshees ran from 1976-1996 and made a huge mark on multiple eras of British rock music. Siouxsie’s side project with Banshees drummer Budgie, the Creatures, ran concurrently for most of that time period before disbanding in 2005. The artist’s debut solo album, Mantaray , was released in 2007, and her most recent new song, “Love Crime,” came out in 2015 as part of the NBC drama Hannibal .
