S tanding in the centre of a large tank, Amrit Sarovar, the Golden Temple is the most beautiful aspect of Amritsar. The city of Amritsar was built around the Golden Temple and the Amrit Sarovar Lake, from which it derives its name. Durgiana Temple , is temple of religious importance for the hindus. In close proximity to the Railway station and the Bus stand, the Durgiana Mandir owes its existence to Guru Shai Mal Kapoor, a religious leader who proposed the idea of the temple. It is his statue in a sitting position that stands immortalised outside the main temple entrance, also called the Darshani Deori. Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya laid the foundation stone of the temple in the year 1924, on the occasion of Ganga Dashmi.

The border post on India-Pakistan border is symbol of brief history of India and so is the parade at Wagha Border everyday!Though the parade starts at 17:00 Hrs, it is advisable to start journey to the place from City by 14:30 Hrs to 15:00 Hrs to get comfortable seat. Parking is 1km from border. Please don’t carry bags as security is tight in the area. food items and water bottles are allowed. You can carry mobiles / camera (Without camera bag) Right time to visit the place is except peak summer times! It is amazing to think that this India/Pakistan border flag lowering ceremony takes place to crowds of thousands every night. The Vibrant celebration on the Indian side is in some ways a contrast to the very composed ceremony visible on the Pakistan side. Nevertheless there seems so much energy, good will and sheer fun.

We went on the tour by train from Delhi we were collected promptly from our hotel and taken to the station. All meals were included. We were collected in Amritsar by John Gill who was an excellent and informative guide. We were taken to our hotel to freshen up the hotel was of a high standard. Lunch was at the yellow chilli and the food was delicious, we then went to the flag waving ceremony at the border which was well worth a visit. In the evening we did an evening tour of the Golden Temple which was a wonderful experience. The following day we went to the Memorial Gardens and another visit to the Golden Temple and visited the kitchens and dining areas I would like to thank John and the company for a memorable and wonderful time thank you

Fantastic tour! Helpful and very well informed guide, train tickets sorted without any hassle, comfy travel too. Absolutely reccommend to anyone with only a couple days to see the highlights of amritsar. Hotel was great quality, drivers were great, all round exceeded expectations!!!

We were met in Delhi and escort onto the train. We were given full details of who would be meeting us in Amritsar, including the guides phone number and car registration number. Our photograph was taken and passed to the guide so he could recognise us. All very reassuring. The trip went like clockwork. We were met, taken to our hotel, which was lovely, for a quick freshen up before going to the border ceremony. This was fantastic. A brilliant spectacle. We returned to the hotel for dinner and then off to the Golden Temple. Magnificent! Next morning a tour of Amritsa. It is truly a beautiful city. At 4 oclock we were escorted back to the station. Our train was on time but held up for 15 minutes outside Delhi station. No problem our guide was waiting as we left the carriage to drive us to our overnight accommodation. I would and already have recommended this tour to several friends staying in Goa. I will definitely be using this company for our next trips in India. They made life very easy. Thank you.

What an amazing trip! From start to finish the organisation was excellent. The pick up from the hotel was on time and we were taken to our seats on the train. The on board food supplied was of a good standard with free water. The guide Mr Goldy met us and we were taken to the India Pakistan border for the nightly ceremony of the flags being raised and lowered. Such a spectacle! 15000 people cheering for India in a well choreographed show. The Holy Book Ceremony at the Golden Temple in the evening was interesting to see. It was very crowded as we were there on the birthday of the founder of the Sikh religion. Mr Goldy made sure we did not get lost and found us good spots to see the proceedings. Touring the Golden Temple the next morning was humbling experience. Around 1500 meals are served at the Temple daily to all who want to eat. All are seated on the ground as one so no-one is above in status. The food is free and all administered by volunteers who are there 24/7 showing kindness and care for all. We spent a long time at the Temple sitting and drinking in the atmosphere of peace and tranquillity before the visit to the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial. We chose to take lunch at our hotel and freshen up before the 6 hour return train journey which was due to arrive at 2305 into Delhi but arrived nearly am hour late as had the outward journey. Sunil was there to collect us and return us to the hotel even though it was so late. This was an excellent trip.

Amritsar and the Golden Temple: The Complete Guide

Amritsar, the spiritual capital of the Sikh religion, is best known for its landmark Golden Temple (officially called Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib). The city's name comes from the water body surrounding the temple and means "Holy Tank of Nectar of Immortality" . As one of the top places to visit in north India , Amritsar is also famed for its local cuisine and heritage related to The Partition of India. This travel guide will help you plan your trip.

Guru Ram Das, the fourth guru of Sikhs, founded Amritsar after being appointed in 1574. It's thought that the land was donated by Emperor Akbar. In order to establish his new base, the guru invited merchants and artisans from nearby areas to settle with him there. In 1977, Guru Ram Das inaugurated the excavation of the holy tank, which became the center point of the city. His youngest son and successor, Guru Arjan Dev, later designed and built the temple complex. Its foundations were laid in 1588 by popular Muslim Sufi saint Miyan Mir (in keeping with the notion that people of all faiths are welcome) and construction was completed in 1604.

The Golden Temple complex was further developed by Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh guru, who added the Akal Takht in 1606. This throne of spiritual authority is one of five seats of power for Sikhs. Unfortunately, the original temple sustained extensive damage during fighting between Sikhs and Muslims. In 1762, Afghan invaders led by   Ahmed Shah Abdali blew up the temple, but fortunately, it was quickly rebuilt. The temple didn't get its glorious golden glow until more than 200 years after it was originally constructed. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the 19th century Sikh Empire, sponsored the gold plating and other marble work in 1830. It was during the fair and courageous reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh that Amritsar truly had its golden years.

British rule followed, and in 1919 Amritsar was the site of an horrific but defining incident in India's struggle for Independence -- the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh, where British troops opened fire on more than 10,000 unarmed protesters in an act that propelled Gandhi's independence movement.

In order to spruce up Amritsar and boost its image, the government completed a series of city beautification projects in 2016. Part of this included revamping the heritage street that runs between the Town Hall, Jallianwala Bagh, and the Golden Temple. A towering statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was installed in the plaza near the temple, and a Partition Museum established in the refurbished Town Hall.

Amritsar is located in Punjab state in the northwestern India. The city is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the Pakistani border.

However, northern India (including Delhi and Amritsar) suffers from fog in winter, so flights can often be delayed during that time. An alternative option is to take the train. There are frequent services from major Indian cities. From Delhi, the  12013/New Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi Express will get you there in six hours. It departs from New Delhi Railway Station at 4.30 p.m. and arrives in Amritsar at 10.30 p.m.

You can also travel to Amritsar by road. Regular bus services run from Delhi and other destinations in North Indian. Travel time from Delhi by bus is around 10 hours. Check Redbus.in for options (if you're a foreigner, you'll need to use Amazon Pay to book because international cards aren't accepted).

Numerous companies offer tours to Amritsar from Delhi. An inexpensive option is the one-night Indian Railways Amritsar Rail Tour Package  that includes train travel on the Swarna Shatabdi Express , all meals, accommodations, transport, and sightseeing. The itinerary includes the Golden Temple, Wagah Border, and Jallianwala Bagh. It departs early Friday and Saturday mornings from New Delhi Railway Station.

Amritsar has quite an extreme climate, with very hot summers and very cold winters. The best months to visit are October and November, and February and March. If you don't mind feeling a little chilly, December and January are also good times to visit. The temperature starts to climb in April and the  monsoon rain arrives in July.

Most of the festivals that take place in Amritsar are religious in nature. Diwali , Holi , Lohri (bonfire harvest festival in January), and Baisakhi (Punjab new year and commemoration of the founding of the Sikh religion brotherhood in April) are all celebrated there on a grand scale. Baisakhi is particularly boisterous, with lots of bhangra dancing, folk music, and fairs. Major celebrations are organized at the Golden Temple on this occasion, and it becomes carnival like outside. There's also a street procession. Other festivals in Amritsar include Guru Nanak Jayanti in November, and the Ram Tirath Fair, also in November a fortnight after Diwali.

How to Visit

Amritsar is divided into old and new parts of the city. The Golden Temple is located in the old part, which is full of bazaars, only 15 minutes from the railway station. The temple's management committee runs frequent free shuttle buses around the clock from the railway station to the temple. However, these buses are very basic and get awfully crowded during peak times.

For tourists, a special Hop-On-Hop-Off sightseeing bus links 11 of the city's top attractions. Do note that museums and Jallianwala Bagh are closed on Mondays.

If you're feeling energetic, City on Pedals conducts themed bicycle tours of the city.

What to See and Do

The Golden Temple is the main attraction in Amritsar, and it's what makes this otherwise normal Punjabi city so special. The temple—so exquisite, it was formally named Sri Harmandir Sahib, "The Abode of God,"— is the central place of worship for all Sikhs. It attracts pilgrims from all over the world who pay their respects and do voluntary service in numbers that rival the yearly visitors to the  Taj Mahal in Agra. The temple also provides a place of worship and shelter for everyone, irrespective of their faith.

The temple looks particularly arresting at night when its imposing pure gold dome is illuminated. In addition to the dome, one of the temple's most incredible features is the langar, or free food from the community kitchen, provided to pilgrims or anyone else in need. The temple is said to have the largest free community kitchen in the world and feeds up to 100,000 people per day. It's possible to take a tour of the kitchen—an opportunity you should not miss—and even volunteer there.

If you have time, the Golden Temple is well worth two visits—one during the day and one at night. Special rituals are performed at dawn, when the  Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book) is taken out, and upon closing when it's returned to bed. The scripture is treated as a living person, or guru, out of respect. Sikh weapons are put on display at around 8 p.m. after the evening scripture. The temple is open almost 24 hours a day. Other Things to Do in Amritsar

Amritsar's Old City is really worth exploring. This Heritage Walking Tour of Amritsar will guide you through its narrow lanes. On the walk, you'll get to see historic mansions, traditional trades and crafts, and captivating architecture with intricately carved wooden facades.

Amritsar is known for its hearty street food. There are various options for guided walking tours including this  Amritsari Food Trail  offered by Amritsar Magic, and  Amritsar Food Walk  offered by Amritsar Heritage Walk.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre site has a memorial with an Eternal Flame of Liberty. The walls of the garden still bear bullet marks, and the place where the firing was ordered can also be seen. A gallery with pictures of Indian freedom fighters and historical memorability is another attraction there.

Amritsar's new Partition Museum is dedicated to recording and preserving the experiences of those affected by the 1947 Partition of India, which was enacted as part of the deal to grant India independence. It's one of the top museums in India  and showcases an important event in India's history that has had wide-ranging effects of world politics.

Gobindgarh Fort, on Old Cantt. Road in Amritsar, is worth visiting as well. This fort was the heart of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's empire. It housed an armory and mint, and has almost 300 years of fascinating history. The government opened the restored fort to the public in 2017. It has been developed into a cultural center with a museum dedicated to Punjab’s history.

Where to Eat and Drink

Century-old  Kesar Da Dhaba  is an iconic eatery in the Old City, near the Golden Temple. You'll need to take a cycle rickshaw there or walk, as it's tucked away in a narrow lane. Do note that it only serves vegetarian food.

For lunch, try the Amritsari kulchas (with potato, cauliflower or cottage cheese fillings) at Bhai Kulwant Singh Kulchian Wale, situated down a side street between Jallianwala Bagh and Golden Temple.

Near the Town Hall, Bharawan da Dhaba has been in business since 1912 and is best known for its winter specialty of sarson da saag (mustard greens) with makki ki roti (cornmeal flatbread). One of the owners opened the equally popular Bare Bhai Ka Brothers Dhaba next door.

If you're a hardcore carnivore, head to  Makhan Fish and Chicken Corner  or Beera Chicken House (known for its roast chicken).

Adventurous foodies shouldn't miss sampling hot paaya (a curry made with goat trotters) and keema parathas (flatbread stuffed with spicy minced goat meat) at Pal Dhaba at Hathi Gate.

Where to Stay

Some reasonably priced budget options are Hotel City Park , Hotel City Heart , Hotel Darbar View , and Hotel Le Golden. These are best for those who prefer to stay close to the Golden Temple, but this area won't suit everyone because the streets are congested. The contemporary new Taj Swarna Amritsar is the best luxury hotel in the city. Golden Tulip Amritsar is a decent mid-range option close to the railway station.

For a characterful heritage hotel, head to the WelcomHeritage Ranjit's Svaasa . This boutique Ayurvedic spa retreat is housed in a 200 year old mansion, just off Mall Road (around 10 minutes drive from the Golden Temple). Expect to pay 6,000 rupees upwards for a double. 

Alternatively, Amritsar has some fabulous boutique properties on the outskirts of the city, such as the  Farmer's Villa  farmstay.

If you'd prefer to stay in a guesthouse, Mrs. Bhandari's Guesthouse receives good reviews. It's situated in a peaceful area surrounded by a garden and has a swimming pool. Double rooms are available from 2,600 rupees per night.  Jagaadus Hostel is the most popular backpacker hostel in Amritsar and arranges local tours.

What Else to Do Nearby

Most people who visit Amritsar also take a day trip to the Wagah Border between India and Pakistan. The big attraction there is the flag lowering ceremony , which happens at the checkpoint every evening at sundown. It has been going on since 1959 with great fanfare. You can get there by taxi (about 1,000 rupees return), auto rickshaw, shared jeep (150 rupees per person), or join one of the many tours.

Boutique tour companies also conduct day trips to local villages, farms, and wetlands for birding and nature walks.

The trip was well structured with focused attractions in cities of Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore and Jaipur. An unexpected gem in this tour is the Bharatpur birds park and the photo hunting of birds had so much fun. No worries or stress at any point. Guides took us at the right times to different areas, and managed to have us skip most of the lines. We chose the 5-star hotels, and were impressed. Food options were very good. In many cases, the breakfast buffet at the hotels got us through nearly the entire day. Delhi tour was very solid. Guide covered the history of the Mughals while visiting Humayun’s tomb and the Qutub Minar. Drive by of the capitol buildings was also great. Wish we could have spent some time in Old Delhi, and also seen the Red Fort. Agra guide was incredible. Gave us a lot of professional-looking photos with our mobile phones. Vijay Chouhan was the guide. Gave us lots of interesting information on the Taj and Agra fort. Between Delhi and Agra, got a very clear picture on the different eras of Mughal rule. Ranthambore was very scenic. Got to see a wild Leopard! Tried multiple times to see a tiger, with the safari guide, but ultimately missed them. Still, great to see the wide expanse and care the tigers are receiving. Jaipur tour, and the city itself, were wonderful. The guide, Anurag, was very knowledgeable on the details of the royal family, history of Jaipur, and astrological instruments. Last stand-out was the driver. DK Sharma got us everywhere safety and quickly. Ride was comfortable and clean. He went out of his way multiple times for us, and let us experience different things apart from the main tour; Such as elephant riding and playing Holi with some of his friends! 1 Delhi - Agra - Delhi By Private Car

Today, after breakfast you will meet & greet our Driver and drive to Agra.

On arrival you will visit the magnificent Taj Mahal - one of the Seven Wonders of the World and surely the most extravagant expression of love ever created. 20,000 men labored for over 17 years to build this memorial to Shah Jahan's beloved wife.

Also, visit  Agra Fort – the rusty and majestic red-sandstone fort of Agra stands on the banks of the river Yamuna and the construction was started by Emperor Akbar in 1566.

At the Diwan-I-Am (hall of public audience), a collonaded hall of red-sandstone with a throne alcove of inlaid marble at the back, the Emperor heard public petitions.

At the Diwan-I-Khas (hall of private audience) where marble pavilions with floral inlays lend an ethereal ambience, the Emperor sat on his gem-studded Peacock Throne and met foreign ambassadors and rulers of friendly kingdoms.

Later return to Delhi for Overnight Stay in Hotel.

2 Delhi-Amritsar By Fast Train

Early morning, you will be transferred to the Train Station to catch a train for Amritsar.

During the approximate 6-hour ride, enjoy complimentary Breakfast on the train.

Upon arrival in Amritsar around 13:45Hrs, you will be met by a driver and transferred to hotel.

Later you will go to attend the flag ceremony on Wagah Border.

The Wagah border closing 'lowering of the flags' ceremony, or The Beating Retreat ceremony is a daily military practice that the security forces of India (Border Security Force) and Pakistan (Pakistan Rangers) have jointly followed since 1959. This ceremony takes place every evening before sunset at the Wagah border, the ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both the sides, and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags.

Later return to the hotel.

3 Amritsar - Delhi By Fast Train

After Breakfast, start your city tour with the blessings of Sri Harmandir Sahib, which is named after Hari (God) the Temple of God, also known as the Golden Temple in Amritsar and is the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion.

The Gurdwara is surrounded by a large lake known as the Sarovar, which consists of Amrit (holy water).

Then visit the Jallianwala Bagh which is a memorial to the countless numbers of innocent Indians which were killed by the British General, Edward Dyer when he ordered his soldiers to open fire on an unarmed gathering of Hundreds men, women and children in this place.

Also, visit the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum - The Museum displays objects connecting to Maharaja Ranjit Singh such as arms and armour, outstanding paintings and century’s old coins and manuscripts.

Also, you will visit some temples like Durgiana Temple. This temple derives its name from the Goddess Durga and it is also called by the name of Lakshmi Narayan Temple.

Later you will be transferred to Amritsar Train Station to board your train Back to Delhi.

During the approximate 6-hour return, enjoy complimentary Dinner on the train.

Upon arrival 23:00 hrs at New Delhi train station you will be pickup & transfer to your hotel in Delhi or the airport.

I want to bring to knowledge about the fact that there are lot of wheel chairs available around the complex,especially near main entrance and best part is that there is a LIFT which will take you to parikarma area . You can do parikarma with wheel chair . You can request the sevadaars at darshi Jori about the problem of person on wheel chair and they will allow direct acess (NOT WITH WHEEL CHAIR)..you have to walk the final path(if you can do that),but in that also there is commotion ..so my parents could not do the darshan inside as they could not walk or wait much.(I wish something could be done in these situations..as elderly,sick,special people also deserve darshan). AVOID going on weekends and festival days as there is lots and lots of devoties...But on top of this the complex itself is heavenly..you can do darshan anywhere..... So you do not need to carry especially wheel chair..any of accompanying person can request for wheel chair and reach main entrance..on right side below information centre is the LIFT...on the other entrance at Akal Takt sahib...there is electronic chair on stairs. Morning city tour, visiting the Museum, High Court, Assembly Chamber and Rock Garden. Afternoon drive to Amritsar, situated on the north western border of the country. The 400 years old city, founded by the fourth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Ramdas, has been the seat of the Sikh religion and culture from its very inception. It is renowned for the famous Golden Temple. Amritsar , literally Pool of Nectar, derives its name from the holy pond around the temple. The land for the pool was gifted by the Moghul Emperor Akbar.

Morning excursion of Tarn Taran, famous for a gurudwara standing on the side of a large tank and built in honour of Guru Arjun Dev. Lepers come from far off places to have a dip in the tank, for it is believed that its water can help cure leprosy. Proceed to Gobindwal, a short run from Tarn Taran, connected to the memory of guru Amardas who lived there. A gurudwara built by the guruji still stands there. Since no place was available for a tank, an underground Baoli was constructed near the gurudwara with a flight of 84 steps leading to it. Continue onto Hazoor Sahib, where the Samadhi (memorial) of the second Sikh guru, Guru Angad Devji, was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1815. Return to Amritsar. Afternoon visit the Golden Temple built in the midst of the holy pool by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1803, it is also known as Darbar Sahib or Har Mandir Sahib. The dome of the temple is covered with an estimated 400 kgs of gold leaf , hence its popular name the Golden Temple. The interiors of the temple, like wise, decorated by inlay work with delicate floral patterns are done with semi precious stones. Adjoining the pool is Akal Takht, established by the sixth Sikh guru, Guru Hargobind Singh. It is seat of the supreme head of the Sikh religious authority.

Morning visit Jailianwala Bagh, the historic site where hundreds of innocent Indian men, women and children were massacred by British General Michael Dyer on April 13, 1919. A memorial and garden have been created here as a national monument.
