DP World Tour announces global 2023 schedule

Change Text Size

The DP World Tour today announced its full 12-month schedule for the 2023 season, featuring a minimum of 39 tournaments in 26 countries, once again emphasizing its position as golf’s global Tour.

  • Record overall prize fund of $144.2 million for regular DP World Tour events next season
  • Increase in Rolex Series prize funds
  • Player Earnings Assurance Programme to be introduced

DP World Tour members will compete for an overall prize fund of $144.2 million across the tournaments outside the Major Championships and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play including an increased bonus pool of $6 million for the leading eight players on the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex.

As part of this record total prize fund, the 2023 season will also see the introduction of a new Earnings Assurance Programme for DP World Tour members.

Exempt players in categories 1-17 will be guaranteed minimum earnings of $150,000 if they compete in 15 or more events as part of the programme which was agreed by the DP World Tour’s Tournament Committee last week.

Both the record prize fund, increased bonus pool and Earnings Assurance Programme have been made possible by the DP World Tour’s operational joint venture partnership with the PGA TOUR which was announced in June.

Keith Pelley, the DP World Tour’s Chief Executive, said: “For us to be able to offer our members record prize funds and enhanced earning opportunities is massive, particularly when global economies are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and with the new challenge of rising inflation significantly putting pressure on costs in all facets of our business.

“Our overall prize fund for the 2023 season represents $50 million more than 2021 and also underlines the strength of our partnership with the PGA TOUR, who are working with us to drive revenue and a long-term growth plan.

“One of the many benefits we have been able to introduce because of this partnership is the new Earnings Assurance Programme, similar to what they already have on the PGA TOUR. I have always believed that it is an incredible accomplishment for any professional golfer to simply gain their playing rights on the DP World Tour and this new initiative recognizes and rewards that achievement.

“Although we will never lose the magic of the meritocracy and purity of a performance-based structure, this now offers certainty of income to those players who have made it to the pinnacle of the professional game in Europe.

“Alongside the John Jacobs Bursary for the top five players who graduate to the DP World Tour from the Challenge Tour, it will provide security and a strong platform for emerging players in particular as they come through the global pathways we have created.”

Included in the DP World Tour’s record prize fund of $144.2 million is an increase in the tournament prize funds for the first four Rolex Series events of 2023. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship all move from $8 million in 2022 to $9 million next year, ahead of the $10 million season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The DP World Tour’s global schedule begins on November 24, 2022, with a double header – the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane and the Joburg Open in South Africa. The former is one of two tournaments in Australia on the DP World Tour schedule as part of the Strategic Alliance with the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, while the latter is one of six events co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour, also as part of a strategic alliance.

Four new tournaments in Asia are also included on the 2023 schedule, with the Singapore Classic (February 9-12) and Thailand Classic (February 16-19) taking place in consecutive weeks, followed by the Tour’s first trip to Japan for the ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP (April 20-23) and a return to Korea for the first time since 2013 (April 27-30).

In Europe, there are dates changes for several tournaments, including the Horizon Irish Open moving to September 7-10, while the Italian Open will take place from May 4-7 ahead of venue Marco Simone Golf & Country Club hosting the 2023 Ryder Cup from September 29 – October 1.

There is also a new three-week summer break in the schedule following the 151st Open Championship and Barracuda Championship (both July 20-23) which has been introduced following player feedback. Further details about the autumn events will be announced in due course.

DP World Tour Championship: Nicolai Hojgaard mounts final-day charge to victory

  • Published 20 November 2023

Nicolai Hojgaard

Nicolai Hojgaard won the 2021 Italian Open and 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Championship

Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard won the DP World Tour Championship by two shots in Dubai as Englishmen Matt Wallace and Tommy Fleetwood fell short in the final round.

Hojgaard, 22, started the final day two shots off the lead but nine birdies in a round of an eight-under-par round of 64 left him 21 under par.

Viktor Hovland, Wallace and Fleetwood finished two shots behind.

"It means a lot. It's the sweetest one," Hojgaard told Sky Sports.

"So much hard work has been put in over the last couple of years, and this year has been a really good one if I look back on it. The only thing that was missing was a win.

"To get a win this week in this field has been unbelievable. This win is for my family, everything they've put in over the years."

Hojgaard shot five birdies in five holes from 13 to 17 at the Jumeirah Estates' Earth course to land his first Rolex Series win and third tour title.

A bogey on the 17th left Fleetwood needing an eagle on the last to win, but he managed only a par to complete a round 68, while Wallace went round in 69.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy tied for 22nd on 10 under but celebrated winning the Race to Dubai for the fifth time.

He told Sky Sports: "It's great. Over the last 10 years I've won eight season-long titles between here and America, so it shows my consistency.

"It's just about being clinical when I get to weeks where I have a chance to win.

"Overall it has been another great year."

Only two players - Colin Montgomerie (eight) and the late Seve Ballesteros (six) - have more Race to Dubai titles than McIlroy.

McIlroy said: "I've still got a little bit left in the tank. I've got a good eight to 10 years in me where I can play at the top level.

"I'd like to think I'm going to try and get past Seve and Monty. It's a goal of mine for the rest of my career to do something like that. It would mean a lot to me."

The Netherlands' Joost Luiten lost three clubs in a tree , external during the final round.

He threw his driver in frustration on the ninth hole and, in attempting to dislodge it from a branch, got two other clubs stuck.

Luiten played the rest of the hole with 11 clubs in his bag before a volunteer retrieved the clubs from the tree.

"That sums up my week nicely," Luiten said.

Indian Open 2024 golf: Japan’s Keita Nakajima wins title, India’s Veer Ahlawat finishes tied-second

Keita Nakajima carded 17 under par to win the title. USA’s Johannes Veerman and Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg also finished T2. Anirban Lahiri missed the cut.

Keita Nakajima of Japan won the Hero Indian Open 2024.

Japan’s Keita Nakajima won his maiden DP World Tour title at the Indian Open 2024 golf tournament, which concluded at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurugram on Sunday.

Nakajima secured a comprehensive victory as a 73 in the final round proved enough to hand him a four-shot win with a total of 17 under-par. He arrived into the final round on the back of a four-shot advantage.

The Japanese golfer had opened up a nine-shot lead at one point but a strong finish from home favourite Veer Ahlawat, American Johannes Veerman and Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg, who all finished tied-second, cut down his victory margin.

"It feels amazing," Nakajima said. "I feel like this is the first win of a new professional career. This is my first year playing on the DP World Tour and I'm very proud to have won on the DP World Tour and very honoured to be playing here. I want to try and finish in the top ten on this tour and then go to the PGA Tour in 2025.”

This was only Nakajima’s 11th start and victory here has helped him move to 13th in the Race to Dubai Rankings and on top of the Asian Swing Standings.

Nakajima has also become only the fifth Japanese winner in the history of the DP World Tour. Players from Japan have notched seven DP World Tour victories overall.

India’s Veer Ahlawat, meanwhile, finished strong and went three under in his last three holes to finish tied-second. He ended up as the highest-ranked Indian golfer in the home tournament after scoring 13 under par.

India’s Manu Gandas finished tied-11th with nine under par while Karandeep Kochhar finished with eight under par to end up at T13 on the leaderboard. Shubhankar Sharma finished tied 31st.

Indian Open 2015 champion Anirban Lahiri, however, missed the cut. Lahiri is a two-time winner on the European Tour golf circuit and a seven-time Asian Tour winner.

New DP World Tour 'Balls For Birdies' grassroots initiative announced by DP World Tour

DP World, the global logistics provider and title partner of the DP World Tour, has announced a new DP World Tour golf ball initiative, ‘Balls for Birdies’. The initiative builds on DP World’s unique Second Life Container campaign which has collected and donated over 280,000 used, lost and unwanted golf balls over the past few years, helping to grow the game of golf globally.

During the 2024 DP World Tour season, DP World has pledged to donate golf balls, linked to the number of Birdies / Eagles / Albatrosses shot on the DP World Tour, which at the end of the season will form part of a beneficiary donation, to promote grassroots golf and make golf more accessible all around the world.

· For each birdie, 1 ball will be donated

· For each eagle, 2 balls will be donated

· For each albatross, 100 balls will be donated

Balls for Birdies will commence on Thursday March 28th at the Hero Indian Open and continue throughout the 2024 DP World Tour season, concluding at the DP World Tour Championship, before starting again for the 2025 season.

Balls for Birdies will be seen by golf fans around the world on the DP World Tour broadcast, as a number of graphics have been created, linked to the new campaign. These will be shown at key DP World Tour events including the Genesis Scottish Open, Abu Dhabi Championship and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

Tommy Fleetwood , world number 13 and 7-time winner on the DP World Tour , who provided the VO in the launch video, said, "DP World has played a major part in helping to grow grassroots golf. This new initiative is really exciting, I hope I can play my part, as will all DP World Tour members, by playing well and shooting low scores, to help donate as many balls as possible and inspire the next generation.”

Danny van Otterdijk, Chief Communications Officer at DP World , adds, "We're delighted with the positive effects that our Second Life Container initiative has had over the past two years, and we think Balls for Birdies is a brilliant extension of this. It’s always great to work collaboratively with the DP World Tour, on initiatives that will help to inspire people and grow the game, using our smart logistics network around the globe to facilitate that.”

“We are delighted to work with DP World on the new Balls for Birdies initiative, this will have a major impact on many aspiring golfers around the world. We’re hopeful that players will shoot as many low scores as possible, to keep the golf ball tally increasing throughout the season.” said Keith Pelley, Chief Executive Officer of the DP World Tour.

Over the past two seasons, 280,000 golf balls have been collected in numerous ways as DP World’s Second Life container has travelled to several DP World Tour events. DP World has partnered with grassroots projects around the world, to receive these balls, including Junior Golf Foundation in Kenya, the South African Disabled Golf Association and Golf Foundation India.

To coincide with the launch of Balls for Birdies, over 10,000 balls have been donated to the Golf Foundation India during the Hero Indian Open.

DP World fans can keep up to date with the Balls for Birdies initiative by watching the DP World Tour broadcast and across DP World and DP World Tour social channels.

DP World Tour and KPGA Tour merge events, Genesis to title sponsor

G lobal automotive brand Genesis has announced a new Korea-centric partnership with European golf’s DP World Tour, one that will see the DP World Tour and Korea’s KPGA Tour merge an event.

Through a deal unveiled yesterday (April 3), the DP World Tour’s Korea Championship tournament, which was already co-sanctioned by the KPGA Tour, will merge with the KPGA Tour’s existing Genesis Championship and will use the latter name going forward.

Genesis has agreed a three-year title partnership for the newly merged event, having previously been the title partner of the KPGA Tour tournament of the same name and the presenting partner of the DP World Tour’s Korea Championship.

The newly merged event will become the last of the DP World Tour's new Back 9 swing of historic tournaments. It will be made up of 90 DP World Tour players, and 30 KPGA Tour players.

KPGA Tour chief executive Wonsup Mike Kim has stated: “This event marks a significant milestone in fostering a closer relationship between the DP World Tour and KPGA Tour. We extend our best wishes for a successful tournament."

The two golf bodies signed an initial partnership in May 2023 in order to create a pathway for KPGA Tour players to participate in the DP World Tour, with the merger of the Genesis Championship and Korea Championship another firm step towards that.

The Korea Championship was originally due to take place on April 21 this year, but will now instead take place from October 24-27 at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon, South Korea, as the last event on the tour before the Abu Dhabi Championship and DP World Tour Championship season-ending playoff events.

In taking title sponsorship rights on for the newly merged event, Genesis deepens its links with professional golf’s elite competitions.

The auto manufacturer is also the title sponsor of the DP World Tour’s Scottish Open,  which is co-sanctioned by the elite-tier PGA Tour, and puts its name to the PGA Tour’s own annual Genesis Invitational in California, US, as well.

"DP World Tour and KPGA Tour merge events, Genesis to title sponsor" was originally created and published by Sportcal , a GlobalData owned brand.

After claiming four victories in his homeland, he now has one in just his 11th appearance on the DP World Tour despite dropping four shots in his final five holes in New Delhi.

Nakajima made his professional debut with a tie for 12th at the 2022 Zozo Championship on the PGA Tour and he is now aiming to claim one of the 10 cards available on the US circuit via the Race to Dubai, having climbed to 13th in the rankings with his win.

The 23-year-old started the final round of the Hero Indian Open four shots ahead and essentially had the title sewn up by the turn, opening up a nine-shot advantage after turning in 33.

That gave him enough breathing room for his late stumble and his closing 73 saw him finish at 17 under and win by four shots from India's Veer Ahlawat, Swede Sebastian Soderberg and American Johannes Veerman.

English duo Sam Bairstow and Matthew Jordan finished nine shots off the lead in a group of six players who tied for 13th.
