Hoover dam tours.

The Hoover Dam is a world–famous concrete arch–gravity dam that is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on the border between Nevada and Arizona. It impounds the mighty Colorado River in the Black Canyon .

The dam was designated a National Historic Landmark by congress in 1985. More than 8 million people a year visit the dam and many take Hoover Dam tours.

A Hoover Dam tour is a great way to take in this architectural and engineering marvel. The dam is 726 feet tall and nearly a 1/4–mile long. It is 660 feet wide at its base and has enough concrete to build thousands of miles of interstate.

Dam History

The dam was built in a five–year period between 1931 and 1936. Building the dam was perilous. Nearly one hundred workers perished in the construction of the dam.

The dam created beautiful Lake Mead , which is a massive reservoir north of dam. Lake Mead is very popular for water sports. The Bureau of Reclamation of the United States Department of the Interior operates the dam.

There is much more than just the dam to explore at the Hoover Dam. The dam has interesting architecture, memorials, sculptures, and historical features. On the Nevada side, there is also a massive power generation station.

Photo opportunities abound in every direction. To the north are the beautiful blue waters of Lake Mead. To the south, 726 feet below lies the scenic Black Canyon of the Colorado River , where rafting trips are offered.

To the south now also lies the Mike O'Callahan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, also known as the Hoover Dam Bypass .

On the the east side of the Hoover Dam is the state of Arizona and to the west is state of Nevada. Desert mountains flank both sides of the Colorado River near the dam.

The state line is in the middle of the dam and there are intake towers on each side with clocks on them indicating "Nevada time" and "Arizona time" as the time zone changes on the state line.

Tour the Dam

If you are traveling to Las Vegas, one of the United States' most popular travel destinations, experiencing Hoover Dam tours is a must. It is one of the top sightseeing attractions in the Las Vegas area.

A variety of different types of Hoover Dam tours are offered. Most tour companies operate out of Las Vegas and will pick visitors up from their hotels. Visitors can take private tours, group tours, bus tours, helicopter tours, or airplane tours of the dam.

Tours can typically be either a half–day or full day, or just a few hours if you take a helicopter tour. If you would like to stay near the dam, the nearest town is Boulder City , Nevada, eight miles to the west.

• If a motorcoach with a lift is required we must have a 72-hour prior notification to the date of travel
• All motorcoaches with lift equipment are subject to availability
• All motorcoaches are DOT certified and are able to kneel to curb height
• Service dogs are allowed to travel with the correct and current paperwork, small oxygen tanks are allowed
• All reservations must be confirmed 24 hours prior to travel date
• 24-hours prior cancellation policy in effect for all tours
• Passengers traveling with a child 2 and over must also purchase a seat on the helicopter due to FAA Guidelines

Restrictions

• The following items are prohibited on our motorcoach tours due to security restrictions at the Hoover Dam: luggage, large backpacks, suitcases, briefcases, coolers, and alcohol. If an item has not been listed, please verify with your reservations agent prior to booking.

Picked up right on time (downtown Las Vegas) went to main terminal and the tour started from there, 1st stop was a chocolate factory with a couple samples, then on to the Mead Lake cruise which was beautiful and included a nice lunch, then on to the Hoover Dam which was also a lot of fun, started with a short video and then the tour. Then back to Vegas where downtown was the 1st drop off which I thought was great. (My last Gray Line trip (Grand Canyon) I was picked up 1st (downtown) and dropped off last which added about 3 extra hours to my trip which I didn't expect or appreciate.)

Important Details:

• Please arrive at your pickup location at least 10 minutes prior to your departure time, as the tour cannot wait for late guests
• Find your specific pickup location the day prior to be sure you know where to meet

• Chevron down STEPS TO SECURE PERMIT

Thank you for your inquiry! If permits are available for your preferred launch date, we can proceed by submitting your list of participants to the Hoover Dam authorities to initiate the vetting process.

To secure permits, please email a roster using the following format. Include the first and last names of all individuals who intend to participate, exactly as they appear on their government-issued photo IDs. Since the Hoover Dam launch site falls within a federal-level one security zone, dam security will conduct background checks. Therefore, please refrain from using fake names as placeholders. If you don’t have the names of participants yet but are confident that you’ll fill the reservation, use three asterisks (***) as placeholders. It’s essential to note that launch permits are nonrefundable, even for tentative participants marked as ***.

Additionally, if you possess an America the Beautiful National Parks Pass or hold an active military ID, please provide the respective numbers to qualify for the discounted adult permit rate.

• Chevron down WILL I TURN THE BOAT OVER?

We can’t guarantee you won’t flip over, we do take some precautions to help minimize capsize. We specialize in using Ocean Kayak brand sit-on-top kayaks in the rental fleet. These boats have been designed to be used on the ocean so they can handle most water conditions on the river. If you don’t overload them they are very stable. We have over 10 O.K. models in rentals and we try to size you to a boat. If you choose a touring kayak or canoe you must be aware that these boats handle differently. Your center of gravity may be higher, or the boat may be narrower thus affecting stability. Also the sit-on-tops are easier to self rescue from so we suggest calling us for more information on the right boat for you.

• Chevron down WHEN IS A GOOD TIME OF YEAR TO GO?

Anytime you can get on the water is a good time to go. There are certain times of the year though when it good to come to the Colorado River.

Fall and early spring are great, October to November the temperatures are mild and motorized traffic starts to disappear.

In the spring mid March to mid May, the temperatures range in the 70’s for March, to 90-100 degrees in May. Since it is starting to warm up river traffic starts to pick up and there are no guarantees for a quiet time on the river.

As summer approaches more motorized boats appear and the river can be quite busy. We strongly recommend early morning launches in the summer. We will put you on as early as you would like with a 6:00am time being ideal. Of course if you are on vacation it is not mandatory to go this early but, around 10:30am is when motorized traffic starts to pick-up and the wind starts to blow.

Winter is a quiet time of the year so if solitude is what you are seeking December to early March is ideal. There are few motorized boats at this time of year. Temperatures are mild, and migratory Waterfowl can be observed. With a little bit of planning you can paddle and enjoy the experience .

• Chevron down ARE THERE ANY RAPIDS OR WHITE WATER ON THE RIVER?

No! The lower river has been drastically altered over the last 70 years creating several reservoirs for water storage and power generation. The flowing sections of the river have a current of about 3mph. Although it may seem to move faster it doesn’t. It is the volume of water that makes it seem as if you are going faster. On the Davis Dam to Rotary Park trip even if you don’t paddle at all you can still make it to the end in about 4 hours.

• Chevron down WHAT ARE THE AGE RESTRICTIONS?

We do not have age restrictions. It is dependant on what the parents feel comfortable with. If you do take a child you must have a proper LIFEJACKET for the child. We do have children’s lifejackets and suggest you call in advance to make proper arrangements. There are some trips we don’t recommend for smaller children. We also suggest checking with others in your group to see if children will fit the dynamics of the group.

• Chevron down CAN I TAKE MY DOG WITH ME?

We do not recommend taking pets on a trip with you. We have over the years seen people take pets with them (even a pet goat). However, you must realize this is the desert and it can be a very harsh environment. A pet may not fit the dynamics of a group either so we suggest not bringing them.

• Chevron down WHERE CAN I GO TO ESCAPE MOTORIZED BOAT TRAFFIC?

Since the lower river is considered a navigable waterway motorized traffic is allowed anywhere you might want to go. However there are a few places on Lake Mead and Mohave that are a little more isolated and therefore harder to get to so traffic is less than in the more populated areas. Give us a call and we can help direct you to these areas.

• Chevron down IF I DON'T HAVE THE MINIMUM FOR A CERTAIN TRIP CAN I STILL GO?

Yes! You can still go. Although your cost will be higher. Figure what the trip would cost with the minimum participants and that is what it will cost if you cannot meet the minimum trip participants.
