Small Group Gaucho Day Tour to an Argentinian Ranch

Quick details.

  • Hour Glass Duration: 9 Hours
  • Calendar Availability: Daily
  • Checkmark Tour Type: Small Group Public Tour

Explore the countryside of Buenos Aires and learn all about the gauchos and ranch life on the Pampas in an exciting full-day tour that includes visits to a historical rural town and silversmith museum, visits to a ranch, loads of food and wine, dancing, horseback-riding, gaucho horse skills display, and convenient pick-up and drop-off at your hotel/Airbnb/cruise port.

Premium Gaucho Day

Classic gaucho day, exclusive day at farm, all passengers, tour the countryside and visit a typical argentinian ranch:.

In this exciting and fun-filled full-day tour our team of reliable and professional drivers and very passionate, informative, knowledgeable, and helpful tour guides with excellent English skills will take you in a small group of no more than 12 guests on an epic adventure into the world of the Gauchos (The men of the Pampas) and show you the beauties of Argentina’s countryside.

This tour is a good opportunity to get out of the city of Buenos Aires and into the Pampas (the vast flatlands of Argentina) to live a variety of unique experiences that complement what you can see and do in the capital city.

After hotels pick-up, you will leave Argentina’s largest city behind and dive into a completely different world on the way to San Antonio de Areco, a small town dating back to 1730 known as “the cradle of culture and tradition” in Argentina.

The drive out to the Pampas will go quickly as your tour guide will fill in details of life in Argentina and what to expect at the town and the ranch, bringing the landscape around to life with their live commentary providing history, geography, cultural facts, and information.

Once in Areco, you will get off the vehicle and visit the  Draghi museum  which is family-run and operated, featuring some of the best silversmiths in the world. This is the perfect place to learn about Latin American silverwork and get a deep understanding of the gaucho’s particular dress style and working tools.

After your visit, you will get back to the vehicle and head off to the ‘estancia’ (ranch), a beautiful and large property that operates as a farm focusing mainly on cattle-breeding and grain-growing.

Upon arrival at a ranch , you will be greeted with joy by the gauchos and served with  welcome drinks  and some of the best  ’empanadas’  (local pasties) you will eat in the entire world.

You will also have time to try some laid-back completely suitable for beginners  horseback-riding  or wagon-riding guided by the gauchos ensuring each rider’s safety, or if you prefer spend this pre-lunch time wandering around the ranch, enjoying the beautiful scenery and taking pictures.

We strongly suggest you “come to this tour hungry” as for lunch you will be treated to a real  Argentinean meat feast  featuring the national dish:  asado . You will be served a wide variety of grilled beef cuts, sausages, and other local treats, altogether with chimichurri sauce, salads, bread, and  freely flowed wine  (if you are vegan/vegetarian no need to worry as they also offer meat-less and vegan alternatives).  Dessert does not fall behind featuring different options served along with a cup of coffee (very much needed to stay up and engaged after so much food).

The afternoon begins with a  display of singing and dancing  from folk who live in this region, very different from Tango (found in the city), and if you are confident enough you can also give it a try and learn a couple of dancing moves to impress your friends and family when going back home.

To wrap up such a wonderful and authentic Argentine experience, one of the gauchos will delight you with a demonstration of how he tames his horse and the confidence they have in each other in an unconventional  horse whispering   demonstration  that is guaranteed to keep you spellbound. Without a doubt, the highlight of this tour.

Premium Option

You will be visiting the Estancia El Ombu de Areco, renowned for its authentic Argentine charm and rich heritage. Nestled in the heart of the Pampas, this historic ranch offers a quintessential gaucho experience, blending traditional rural life with luxurious comfort. This tour was a lot of fun. There were a number of different activities to enjoy throughout the day and yet it felt like a laid-back outing with friends. The food at the Estancia was plentiful and delicious. Florencia, Augustine, and our driver Jorge were excellent hosts. We highly recommend this trip!

We did 4 tours over our trip to Santiago and Buenos Aires and this was hands down the best experience for our family of 10. First off we had Pablo as our tour guide for the full day and he was nothing short of fantastic. His knowledge of Argentina as a whole and his comfort with our family which included 4 kids under 15 was amazing. The horseback riding was perfect for our family as many had never done it before so it gave you a great taste of what it was like without major risks. The lunch was a true Argentinian meat-eating experience outside under the shade of the huge trees. All I will say is come hungry. Wonderful day and would recommend this to anyone touring Argentina for the first time.

A perfect day on the pampas! We thoroughly enjoyed this visit to a local ranch to ride, eat delicious barbecue, enjoy some wine, and watch the gauchos perform amazing tricks on horseback! A must-do afternoon for anyone visiting Buenos Aires.

What an amazing day. From we were picked up in the morning from our hotel by Julieta, from signature tours, until we got back to our hotel this evening, we felt we were in great hands. Julieta gave us lots of information about the city and about the surrounding area as we left Buenos Aires and headed out to the ranch. The rain didn't spoil our day at this wonderful working ranch. We went horseriding, had some wine and lots of food, and were entertained by the Gaucho cowboys. We laughed and danced into the afternoon... This is a must for anyone travelling to Buenos aires.

Don’t miss this informative and fun-filled day! My son and I just returned from the trip and I just can’t say enough about the entire experience. Signature Tours provided a comfortable and immaculate vehicle with a super knowledgeable guide named Enrique. Enrique did an excellent job providing history, geography, cultural facts, and information. The tour at Draghi was very interesting and we met the silversmith and his wife. At the beautiful ranch, the horseback riding was great fun (Option to ride in a horse and buggy for those not interested in riding), the food was AMAZING and the music and dance were special. Overall, I would have given this 10 stars if possible.

Guide and tour both very good. Ranch hospitality v good, particularly food/barbecue. The wine was poor but they redeemed themselves with good beer. Music and dancing excellent as were the gaucho displays. Spoilt by 0900 pickup then 3/4 hour wait for coach and no drop off at port

I would have given you a 5 Star rating except for two things. 1) The pickup at the Cruiseport was a disaster-the Viator person was late, she had not arranged for taxi, and there was a lot of confusion. 2) We arrived at the Viator office in BA to find that we were crowded on a 14 passenger van/minibus – When the 5 of us got on, there were 16 passengers. The program at the Estancia was really good! Your guide was average.

First class tour guide, pick up time ok, excellent food and very good tango show. Lots of wine, beer and soft drinks included in the price.

buenos aires ranch tour

Port guide: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Y ou don’t have to look hard for a good time in Buenos Aires, a city passionate about tango, football, political demonstrations and juicy steaks.

Who goes there

Buenos Aires is a fulcrum for ships sailing down from the Caribbean and onwards on Patagonian cruises that often finish in Valparaiso (Santiago) on the other side of the continent. Holland America, Oceania, Ponant, Silversea, Royal Caribbean and Viking are among the variety that visit. Big ships might also take in Antarctica, but be warned – these are only scenic sailings sometimes cancelled by the weather, and passengers don’t disembark.

The silt-filled, coffee-coloured Plate River estuary is so wide that you’ll see neither Uruguay on one side nor Argentina on the other as you sail in from the South Atlantic. As you approach Buenos Aires it puts its most modern face forward, since you’ll see glittering Puerto Madero waterfront redevelopment.

Berth rites

Ships dock conveniently near downtown Buenos Aires in a shabby, rusting port. Benito Quinquela Martin Passenger Terminal (named for a 20th-century artist) is a cavernous warehouse for the functional processing of passengers, and devoid of decoration but for a stirring socialist fresco of manly dockworkers. Expect a cafe and a few souvenir shops. You have to get a shuttle bus from cruise terminal to ship through a busy working harbour.

Before and after

A night or two is enough unless you have a particular interest such as tango. Esplendor Buenos Aires is well located near shopping drag Calle Florida and has an art-hotel vibe. If you’re into nightlife, try Home Hotel or other boutique digs in trendy Palermo district.

Going ashore

Spanish-colonial Plaza de Mayo is dominated by the pink presidential palace, Cabildo (town hall) and cathedral. Head to upmarket Recoleta for its fabulously ornate, horror-movie cemetery, stuffed with eminent Argentine corpses including that of Eva Peron ( Evita ). Bohemian district San Telmo features cobblestones, street art, antiques shops and a covered food market.

Harbour-side La Boca district is touristy, tacky and the focus of many shore excursions. Yet although a cliche, you’ll be seduced by the cheerful atmosphere, colourfully painted buildings and street artists daubing dodgy paintings or dancing the tango. Bombonera soccer stadium, home to Boca Juniors, provides an enthusiastically noisy local cultural experience.

Buenos Aires is pancake flat and has some good cycle lanes and a public bike-share system called Ecobici which is free, although you have to register as a user. But what better way to get exercise than to take tango classes? Many tango schools offer classes at all levels of experience for about $75. If you already know what you’re doing, then dance the night away at a milonga or tango club.

Gorge yourself on empanadas (a variety of pie, most commonly with a beef or cheese filling), choripan (a delicious chorizo sausage sandwich) and pastries rich in dulce de leche caramel. Thanks to the Italian immigrant influence, pasta is great, but there’s no better Argentine dinner than steak and Malbec wine. Trendy Palermo Viejo has many hip restaurants including La Cabrera, perhaps the city’s best steakhouse.

Further afield

Excursions beyond the city take you to the bird-rich Tigre Delta or an estancia (ranch) for a taste of cowboy life. Delightful Colonia del Sacramento just across the water in Uruguay has a World Heritage old town in colourful pastel shades. It’s usually visited on shore excursions from Montevideo but is actually easier and quicker to get to from Buenos Aires on a one-hour ferry ride that you can do yourself, or with a local day-tour company.
