The Top 7 Things to See and Do in Lunahuaná, Peru

Lunahuaná has quickly grown a reputation as an outdoors destination and hangout for adrenaline junkies who want to experience the most intense side of the Peruvian back country. The small town is now experiencing an influx of tourists, and more and more adventure agencies are materializing as a result. You can river-run class V rapids, zipline and cycle—all in one day if you really want to get crazy. Here are the best things to see and do in Lunahuaná, Peru.

River running.

River running is the main attraction that drives people to Lunahuaná. Ask any outdoorsman in Peru and they’ll invariably recommend Lunahuaná, especially considering its proximity to Lima, making it only a day trip away. During the winter months (June, July and August) the river is relativaeely calm when compared to the swelled river you’ll find during the summer months (December, January and February). You’ll find a spot for whatever you want to do, even for the most experienced river runners.

River running the rapids in Lunahuaná

Pisco tasting

Artisanal wine.

In the pueblito Catapalla, just outside of Lunahuaná, there is one of the regions oldest wineries called La Reyna de Lunahuaná. Here, too, you’ll get a tour of the grounds and be able to participate in a tasting of pisco and their artisanal wine. Just remember that Peruvian wine is very sweet, so make sure to specify what type of wines you like. They might be able to find something that suits your taste buds.

Lunahuaná is known for one of Peru’s oldest wineries

Along the south coast you’ll find plenty of ruins, but unfortunately for the most part they are almost entirely destroyed, like the ruins you’ll find in Cerro Azul. However, Incahuasi is one of the rare finds that is still largely intact. The site is a military base of the Inca king Túpac Yupanqui. The ruins date back to the 15th century and are located on the outskirts of town. Taxis to the site are the easiest option.

These lines are some of the longest in all of Peru and traverse over Rio Cañete. The five full lines cost around 100 soles (US$30) and covers over 2,500 meters. If you’re looking to get your adrenaline going again after river running, these lines are your best bet to accomplish that.

Ziplining

Lunahuaná is full of activities for lovers of the outdoors and repelling a cliff side certainly qualifies. You’ll drop down the face of a cliff side and slowly descend, as you stare at the ground below getting increasingly larger.

Bike rides through the town and the surrounding area is a perfect way to see all that the town has to offer. You can ride through the plaza and check out all the buildings as you make your way to the Inca ruin, saving you some money on the price of a taxi. You can rent bikes in town from agencies for around 20 soles (US$6) an hour. You can always bargain, as fixed prices aren’t always the norm.

Lunahuaná is a destination three hours from Lima that has everything: good weather, good food and adventure sports, thanks to the fact that the river that bears the same name runs through it. This district located in Cañete is a must for a weekend away, with the attributes of being a nearby destination and with competitive prices.

Your offer is complete. On the gastronomy side, the shrimp that serve as an input for traditional dishes stand out. Although when they are closed, an excellent option is the legendary dry soup. Lunahuaná, adventure and good wine

Lunahuaná is considered a destination for adventure and good wine. The reason? Its geography is suitable for practicing sports such as trekking, cycling, canopy and, above all, canoeing on the Cañete River.

Most of the visitors come from Lima, the most important city in Peru. They come on weekends to enjoy its pleasant hot weather, its adventurous options and the good wine that is produced there. There are approximately 60 producers of good wine there.

Many tourists like to visit the vineyards of the place where they can learn about the wine preparation process. They can also participate in the characteristic 'grape stomping'.

The gastronomy in Lunahuaná is also a good reason to go. There are times of the year where you can enjoy shrimp-based dishes. It is also possible to taste the crispy fried trout. If you go, don't forget to bring the delicious local fruit.

The little ones can also do activities such as horseback riding through the Lunahuaná vineyards. If they are over 8 years old, they can even do canoeing, quad biking and other sports in the company of their father or mother.

History lovers can visit the archaeological site of Incahuasi. It is a curacazgo conquered by the Incas with streets, squares, enclosures and more. Admission to this historic site is free.

As you can read, there are plenty of reasons to visit Lunahuaná. Due to the high influx of visitors, there are already hotels and lodgings with good service. Without a doubt, it is an excellent option if you are looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city of Lima. Although there are 2-day tours, it is also possible to go on your own.

It is located in a valley bathed by the waters of the Cañete River, at an altitude of 479 meters above sea level.

How to get to Lunahuaná from Lima step by step?

  • From any part of Lima you must take a public transport, taxi or private vehicle to the South Pan-American Highway.
  • Once there, you must take public transportation to the whereabouts of 'San Vicente de Cañete' at kilometer 131 of the Pan-American Highway (approximately a 2-hour trip). You can take the buses of the companies 'Turismo Cañete', 'Turismo Jaksa' or 'Peru Bus'. The cost is approximately 20 Peruvian soles.
  • Once in San Vicente de Cañete you must take a collective taxi or taxi service to Lunahuaná (approximately 1 hour trip). The cost of the collective taxi is 2 soles on average.
  • If you visit with a tour, transportation is already included.

History of Lunahuana

The archaeological findings in Incahuasi demonstrate the existence of an original culture in Lunahuaná, the 'Huarcos'. During the Inca expansionist period (15th century) the army of Emperor Túpac Yupanqui faced the Huarcos for control of the current territory of Lunahuaná. The confrontations lasted more than four years with the victory of the Inca who seized Incahuasi, turning it into an administrative center.

During the colonial era, the fertile lands and the pleasant climate of Lunahuaná led to the construction of important haciendas and colonial temples such as the Santiago Apóstol church. Already in the Republican era, the district of Lunahuaná was created on August 4, 1821 (the same year of the Independence of Peru). On December 25, 1985, Lunahuaná was declared the 'Tourist and Cultural Capital of the province of Cañete'.

Adventure sports and their prices

Lunahuaná is recognized for its adventure sports in which you can practice:

  • Canoeing – The Cañete River offers the perfect setting for canoeing. This activity is recommended for people over 8 years of age who like adventure and are willing to get soaked in water. The route is 9 kilometers (takes 1 hour on average). In the main square of Lunahuaná there are tourism agencies that offer this adventure. This activity can be done from 6 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. The price is 50 Peruvian soles per person.
  • ATV – Touring the beautiful landscapes of Lunahuaná aboard an ATV is another option preferred by visitors. The route is 5 kilometers along the banks of the Cañete River (30 minutes or more). No prior experience is required. The price is $16 per ATV (valid for two people)
  • Canopy – This sport is also called zip line and consists of sliding down an inclined cable at high speed, which gives the impression of flying. This adventure takes place at kilometer 33.5, in the San Jerónimo sector. The cable is 2,500 meters long, so it crosses the beautiful landscapes of the place and even the Cañete River. There is a circuit of several ropes at different speeds and distances. Prices start at 50 Peruvian soles per person.
  • Rappelling – Rappelling is a gradual descent on rock with a slope of approximately 90 degrees, held by a rope and special safety equipment for this sport. In the Lunahuaná valley there are rock formations ideal for this practice. The height of the rocks reaches more than 20 meters (1 hour 30 minutes of adventure). Anyone can do this adventure. The price starts at 50 Peruvian soles per tourist.
  • Trekking – Walking through the Lunahuaná Valley on foot is another of the activities preferred by visitors. The route is only a few kilometers long but includes a visit to tourist places such as the 'Haunted House' or the main square. It also offers to cross the Cañete River by means of an 'oroya', a platform that crosses the river with people seated. You can request this service with a local tourism agency. Prices start at 40 Peruvian soles.

Land of good wine

In Lunahuaná there are dozens of vineyards that produce good quality wines and piscos. Many of these vineyards have admission to the public to appreciate the process of making their products. Includes tasting and even participation in the famous 'grape stomping'. Some of the most recommended vineyards are: the 'Hijos del Sol' winery, the 'Los Reyes' winery, the 'Buena Vista' winery as well as the 'Guizado Portillo Hacienda & Resort' winery.

What else to do in Lunahuaná?

In addition to doing adventure sports in Lunahuaná, you can visit the following places:

  • Incahuasi Archaeological Site – Incahuasi was an Inca administrative center that originally belonged to the Huarco curacazgo. It covers an area of eight hectares where it is possible to appreciate squares, the enclosure of the 'Inca chair', walls with niches, a set of looted tombs, paths, stairways and more. It is located in the annex of Paullo, just 1.5 kilometers away. Admission is free.
  • The haunted house of Lunahuaná – In Lunahuaná, the story that this house is haunted was passed down from generation to generation because the family that occupies it was assassinated during the War with Chile in 1881. They say that strange voices and noises are heard at night. At one time it was planned to build a hotel there but the project was suddenly halted. Today many visitors come curious. There are even those who want to spend the night there. It is located just 15 minutes from Lunahuaná, on the road from Uchupampa to Catapalla.
  • The suspension bridge of Catapalla – In the town of Catapalla, just 6 kilometers from Lunahuaná, there is a suspension bridge that became famous for its rustic structure. Crossing it requires balance and some bravery. Although it is not that old, it was built in the 1960s, there are not a few tourists who like to walk there and appreciate the landscape of the place next to this bridge. The visit is free.

When to go?

Lunahuaná is a tourist attraction that offers a pleasant climate throughout the year. However, to carry out the canoeing activity (the one preferred by visitors) it is advisable to go from May to October. That is, in the dry season, when the rains are not frequent and the Cañete River offers fewer risks when doing this sport.

The weather

Lunahuaná has a dry temperate climate with sun throughout the year. The highest temperature can reach 32ºC. The lowest temperature of the year reaches 14ºC. From November to April the rains are more frequent (especially in January, February and March). The rest of the year, from May to October, the rains are not frequent.

Lunahuaná, adventure outside of Lima

Lunahuaná is one of the favorite tourist destinations for the people of Lima. It is located 185 kilometers by road from the city of Lima, about 3 hours 30 minutes of travel approximately. This destination is preferred by adventure lovers as it offers the practice of sports such as trekking, cycling, ATV rides and, above all, canoeing. Find out how much it costs to go, when is the best time to visit and more information about this destination.

All about Lunahuaná

Lunahuaná, adventure and good wine

How to get to lunahuaná from lima step by step, history of lunahuaná, adventure sports and their prices, land of good wine, what else to do in lunahuaná, when to go, the weather, lunahuaná photos, more information.

Lunahuaná is considered a destination of adventure and good wine. The reason? Its geography is suitable for practicing sports such as trekking, cycling, canopy and, above all, canoeing on the Cañete River.

Most visitors come from Lima, the most important city in Peru . They come on weekends to enjoy its pleasant hot weather, its adventurous options, and the good wine produced there. There are approximately 60 producers of good wine there.

Many tourists like to visit the vineyards of the place where they can learn about the wine-making process. They can also participate in the characteristic 'treading of grapes'.

The gastronomy in Lunahuaná is also a good reason to go. There are times of the year when you can enjoy shrimp-based dishes. It is also possible to taste the crispy fried trout. If you go, don't forget to bring the delicious local fruit.

The little ones can also do activities such as horseback riding through the Lunahuaná vineyards . If they are over 8 years old they can even do boating, ATVs and other sports in the company of their father or mother.

History lovers can visit the archaeological site of Incahuasi. It is a curacazgo conquered by the Incas with streets, squares, enclosures and more. Admission to this historic place is free.

As you can read, there are plenty of reasons to visit Lunahuaná. Due to the high influx of visitors, there are already hotels and lodgings with good service. Without a doubt, it is an excellent option if you are looking to escape from the bustle of the city of Lima. Although there are 2-day tours, it is also possible to go on your own.

Lunahuaná is located 185 kilometers by road from the city of Lima. It belongs to the district of Lunahuaná, province of Cañete, department of Lima.

It is located in a valley bathed by the waters of the Cañete River, at an altitude of 479 meters above sea level.

To get to Lunahuaná from the city of Lima you must follow these steps:

  • From any part of Lima you must take a public transport, taxi or private vehicle to the South Pan-American Highway.
  • Once there, you must take a public transport to the stop of 'San Vicente de Cañete' at kilometer 131 of the Panamericana Sur (approximately 2 hour trip).

If you make your visit with a tour, transportation is already included.

The archaeological finds in Incahuasi demonstrate the existence of an original culture in Lunahuaná, the 'Huarcos' . During the Inca expansionist period (15th century) the army of Emperor Túpac Yupanqui faced the huarcos for control of the current territory of Lunahuaná. The clashes lasted more than four years with the Inca victory who seized Incahuasi turning it into an administrative center.

During the colonial era, the fertile lands and the pleasant climate of Lunahuaná led to the construction of important colonial estates and temples such as the Santiago Apóstol church. Already in the republican era, the district of Lunahuaná was created on August 4, 1821 (the same year of the Independence of Peru). On December 25, 1985, Lunahuaná was declared as 'Tourist and cultural capital of the province of Cañete'.

Lunahuaná is recognized for its adventure sports in which you can practice:

  • Rafting - The Cañete River offers the perfect setting for canoeing. This activity is recommended for people over 8 years old who like adventure and are willing to soak up the water. The route is 9 kilometers (it takes 1 hour on average). In the main square of Lunahuaná there are tourism agencies that offer this adventure. This activity can be done from 6 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon. The price is 50 Peruvian soles per person.
  • Quad Bik - Touring the beautiful landscapes of Lunahuaná aboard an ATV is another of the favorite options for visitors. The route is 5 kilometers along the banks of the Cañete River (30 minutes or more). No previous experience is required. The price is $ 16 per ATV (valid for two people)
  • Canopy - This sport is also called zip line and consists of sliding down an inclined cable at high speed, which gives the impression of flying. This adventure takes place at kilometer 33.5, in the San Jerónimo sector. The cable is 2,500 meters long, so it crosses the beautiful landscapes of the place and even the Cañete River. There is a multi-rope circuit at different speeds and distances. Prices start at 50 Peruvian soles per person.
  • Rappellin - Rappelling is a gradual descent into rock with a slope of approximately 90 degrees, supported by a rope and special safety equipment for this sport. In the Lunahuaná valley there are rock formations ideal for this practice. The height of the rocks reaches more than 20 meters (1 hour 30 minutes of adventure). Anyone can do this adventure. The price starts at 50 Peruvian soles per tourist.
  • Trekkin - Walking the Lunahuaná valley is another of the favorite activities for visitors. The route is only a few kilometers long but includes the visit to tourist places such as the 'Haunted House' or the main square. It also offers to cross the Cañete river through an 'oroya', a platform that crosses the river with people seated. You can request this service with a local tourism agency. Prices start at 40 Peruvian soles.

In Lunahuaná there are dozens of vineyards that produce good quality wines and piscos. Many of these vineyards have access to the public to appreciate the process of making their products. Includes tasting and even participation in the famous 'treading of grapes'. Some of the most recommended vineyards are: the 'Hijos del sol' winery, the 'Los reyes' winery, the 'Buena vista' winery as well as the 'Guizado Portillo Hacienda & Resort' winery.

In addition to doing adventure sports in Lunahuaná, you can visit the following places:

  • Incahuasi archaeological site - Incahuasi was an Inca administrative center that originally belonged to the curacazgo de Huarco. It covers an area of eight hectares where you can see squares, the enclosure of the 'Inca chair', walls with niches, a set of looted tombs, paths, stairways and more. It is located in the Paullo annex, just 1.5 kilometers away. Admission is free.
  • The enchanted house of Lunahuaná - In Lunahuaná the story was passed from generation to generation that this house is haunted because the occupying family was murdered during the War with Chile in 1881. They say that strange voices and noises are heard at night. At one time a hotel was planned to be built there but the project was suddenly stopped. Today many visitors come curious. There are even those who wish to spend the night there. It is located just 15 minutes from Lunahuaná, on the road from Uchupampa to Catapalla.
  • The suspension bridge of Catapalla - In the town of Catapalla, just 6 kilometers from Lunahuaná there is a suspension bridge that became famous for its rustic structure. Crossing it requires balance and some courage. Although it is not that old, it was built in the 1960s, there are not few tourists who like to walk there and appreciate the landscape of the place next to this bridge. The visit is free.

Lunahuaná is a tourist attraction that offers a pleasant climate throughout the year . However, to carry out the boating activity (the one preferred by visitors) it is advisable to go from May to October. That is, in the dry season, when rains are not frequent and the Cañete River offers less risk when practicing this sport.

Lunahuaná has a dry temperate climate with sunshine throughout the year. The highest temperature can reach 32ºC. The lowest temperature of the year reaches 14ºC. From November to April the rains are more frequent (especially in January, February and March). The rest of the year, from May to October, rains are not frequent.

During your visit to Lima, in addition to Lunahuaná, do not forget to visit other tourist attractions such as Churín, a town renowned for its many thermal baths .

Lunahuaná offers an acceptable quality of tourist hotels. Some of the most recommended for the good service they offer are: the 'Lunahuaná River Resort', the Río Lindo Ecolodge', the 'Hotel Los Palomos', the 'Hotel Quilla Wasi', the 'Hotel El Molle', the 'Hotel Guizado Portillo Hacienda & Resort', the 'Molino Hotel and Restaurant', the 'Hotel Valle Hermoso Lunahuaná' and the 'Refugio de Santiago Ecolodge'.

Lunahuaná is also characterized by offering the best of Peruvian cuisine in restaurants such as: 'La Confianza Restaurante', 'El Patio 140', 'Restaurante Refugio de Santiago', 'El Jardín Restaurant & Bar', 'Mi Rosedal', 'El Molino Restaurante', 'Luna de Valle Restaurante' and the 'Restaurante Valle Hermoso Piscuy'. Due to the distance (almost 2 hours of travel) and the large number of things to do, it is advisable to take at least one full weekend.

Weather in Lunahuana

The climate in Lunahuaná is very favorable, during practically the whole year. It is that there is very little annual rainfall, which makes it possible to enjoy all the attractions of the place for a longer time. It is always clear and the days without sun or cloudy are numbered. Its average temperature is 23°C, which invites you to visit this Peruvian town without problems, at any time of the year.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.

The K-pop boyband made their Met Gala debut earlier tonight

stray kids 2024 tour met gala k-pop

K-pop boyband Stray Kids seem primed to tour this year, according to a recent interview the group did with Tommy Hilfiger at the Met Gala 2024.

  • READ MORE: ATEEZ are ready to write an even bigger next chapter of their tale: “It’s the start of a new journey from here”

Tommy Hilfiger and Stray Kids were speaking to Vogue on the red carpet of the Met Gala 2024, when the iconic American fashion designer let it slip that the K-pop boyband “[are] embarking on a 40-city tour”, which had previously been unannounced.

While the moment itself has since been removed from the official  Vogue interview with Stray Kids and Hilfiger on YouTube, fans of the K-pop boyband have reposted the unedited version of the clip on X (formerly Twitter) with the fashion designer’s original remarks.

Earlier tonight, Stray Kids made history as the first-ever group to attend the Met Gala together. The boyband were invited to the event on behalf of Hilfiger, having previously starred in the fashion label’s spring 2024 campaign.

The night also saw an appearance by BLACKPINK singer Jennie , who had made her debut at the event in 2023. Take a look at what the K-pop stars wore to the Met Gala 2024 below:

Are there still tickets available to watch the “Eras Tour?” More importantly, is Taylor including TTPD in her setlist?

Taylor Swift is scheduled to hold nine consecutive shows in Canada this year as part of “The Eras Tour.” The tour, initially planned for Toronto and Vancouver from August 20 to December 8, has been extended to include additional cities such as Miami, New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Toronto. This expansion has resulted in the addition of a total of 15 extra concerts to the North American leg of the tour.

As part of her 2024 North American tour, Taylor will also be performing in Miami, Florida (Hardrock Stadium), and New Orleans, Louisiana (Caesars Superdome), with the tour slated to commence on October 18.

Bad Bunny returns to Met Gala in fashionable flair: See the head-turning look

city tour lunahuana

Bad Bunny might be the "Most Wanted" man on the road − but on fashion's biggest night , he's a patron saint of la moda.

The reggaeton superstar, currently on his headlining Most Wanted tour , took a break from the musical action to co-chair the 2024 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City Monday night.

Bad Bunny stunned in a suave navy-blue Maison Margiela Artisanal suit by John Galliano, which he topped off with a plush hat and matching floral bouquet, reflecting the Met Gala's nature-inspired dress code of "The Garden of Time."

The "Monaco" emcee gave some insight into the meticulous preparation that went into his gala attire during an episode of Vogue’s “73 Questions” in April.

"You can't really improvise for the Met," Bad Bunny told the fashion outlet in Spanish, before playfully adding, "If I want to attend a different red carpet and decide to wear boxers last minute, I do it."

Bad Bunny’s sartorial splash follows his appearance at last year’s Met Gala .

The Puerto Rican rapper, known for his gender-nonconforming approach to style , pushed the envelope for men’s fashion with a white Jacquemus suit and rosette-covered cape. He paired an open-backed jacket with a floor-dusting cape covered with roses and slicked his hair back with pearl studs.

Before Bad Bunny dropped into the Big Apple for Met Gala festivities, he performed a concert in Dallas Saturday for his tour. His next show is scheduled to take place Tuesday in New Orleans.
