Level of support - inn to inn.

On Adventure Cycling’s inn-to-inn self-contained trips, riders carry their gear, but there’s a lot less of it because participants stay in hotels and eat in restaurants every night, no camping or group cooking gear is needed. Learn More

Physical Difficulty - Level 2

A great option to get out and explore. The average daily mileage for the tour is 35-45 miles per day. There is a little more climbing involved, generally characterized by rolling terrain. An occasional hilly section may be part of the route. Average daily elevation gain is between 1000-2000 feet, with any single day total not exceeding 3000 feet. (Formerly Beginner+ tours)

Average Mileage: 30-45/day Average Elevation Gain Range: 1000-2000ft/day, high <3000 ft/day

This incredible bike tour takes in a pair of the most spectacular trails in the U.S., along with some fascinating regional history. The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes traces the course of an abandoned Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way, reaching from the Silver Valley near the Montana-Idaho border to Plummer, Idaho, near the border with Washington. The Route of the Hiawatha originates in Montana and burrows beneath the state line through the memorable 1.7-mile–long Taft Tunnel. We’ll then pass through several more tunnels and ride over numerous trestles, some of them an impressive 200-plus feet high.

With its predominantly gentle terrain, short daily distances, and gorgeous scenery, this trip is a great choice whether you’re a bike travel beginner or a cycling veteran.

“A fantastic and challenging tour. Our leader was the best I could imagine.” – Tour Participant

Day 1. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, 0 miles

Your tour begins in the beautiful northern Idaho tourist town of Coeur d’Alene surrounded by crystal-clear glacial lakes. Arrive early to check out the many local activities from boat rentals to beautiful lake vistas during sunrises or sunsets. You’ll meet your fellow riders and your tour leader for an orientation meeting after check-in and a short walk to a local restaurant for dinner to prep yourself for six awesome days of riding.

Day 2. Coeur d’Alene to Harrison, 35 miles

After breakfast, we’ll climb aboard our bikes and begin our ride out of Coeur d’Alene along the East Yellowstone Trail. Spinning our way along the east side of Lake Coeur d’Alene on rural roads, we’ll arrive at the Trail of the Coeur D’Alenes in Harrison, Idaho. You’ll enjoy this quaint, quiet town and all it has to offer: ice cream, the Crane House Museum, and swimming in Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Day 3. Harrison to Wallace, 49 miles

Today we’ll continue up the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes to the Silver Valley, alongside the river and through pine forests to historic Wallace — known as the “Silver Capital of the World.” Along the way, we’ll take a side trip to the Old Mission State Park and visit the oldest building still standing in Idaho. The Sacred Heart Mission was built between 1850 and 1853 by Catholic missionaries and members of the Coeur d’Alene tribe — incredibly, without the use of a single nail. In the afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty and history of Wallace. You might choose to hike the Pulaski Tunnel Trail, take a Sierra Silver mine tour, or enjoy the local Sixth Street Melodrama.

Day 4. Route of the Hiawatha, 29 miles

Our day will begin with an optional shuttle ride to the East Portal trailhead of the Route of the Hiawatha in Montana. Don’t forget to pack your headlamp, because you’ll ride through 10 extremely dark tunnels on this scenic rail trail, including the 1.7-mile–long Taft Tunnel (bring a jacket, it can be cold in there!). Your group will also cross seven lofty trestles offering magnificent views of the surrounding forested mountains. You’ll gradually cover 15 miles of the gravel-surfaced trail through the heart of the rugged Bitterroot Mountains to the Pearson Trailhead before catching the shuttle back to Mullan, Idaho, to complete the daily mileage to Wallace. We’ll then spend another night in the Silver Valley.

Day 5. Wallace to Harrison, 50 miles

We’ll zip back along the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes to a delightful overnight stay in Harrison, reliving some of the adventure of the previous few days but perhaps spotting that ever-elusive moose, elk, eagle, or osprey that call the area home.

Day 6. Harrison to Worley, 26 miles

After breakfast, we’ll continue along the trail past marshes and wetlands, squeezing between Swan Lake and Cave Lake along the Coeur d’Alene River. We’ll be coasting along Lake Coeur d’Alene over the photogenic, 3,100-foot Chatcolet Bridge, with its unique “stair-step” design that’s a blast to ride over. Built in 1921 as a railroad bridge, it’s expressly for cyclists and hikers today. We’ll leave the trail in Plummer and make our way along secondary roads to our overnight in Worley.

Day 7. Worley to Coeur d’Alene, 29 miles

On our last day together, we will make our way north back toward Coeur d’Alene along the western edge of Lake Coeur d’Alene. We’ll say our goodbyes at the trailhead, thoroughly relaxed and rejuvenated after our week of mellow cycling and great sightseeing in the gorgeous and serene panhandle of Idaho.

Accommodations -

Meals - indoor dining.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for each day of the trip. On inn-to-inn trips, breakfast and dinner are provided in eating establishments on the route; lunch is prepared in the morning and you carry it with you on your bike. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.

Physical Difficulty -

Technical difficulty - easy.

Characterized by travel mostly on hard-packed dirt roads and trails, Easy Technical Difficulty tours can be ridden on a rigid-frame bike with a tire size of 35-42mm.

Terrain - Rolling Hills

Tours with Rolling Hills are those that have a bit more climbing in them, but the grades are still fairly relaxed. We’ll typically see climbing of less than 1,800 feet per day and venture into the 2-5% average for grade. (19-38 vertical feet/mile).

Single Supplement: - $650.00

Know before you go.

Information for Route of the Hiawatha: : We recommend those who may ride with tires less than 35mm in width or a tandem consider renting a bike for the day on the Route of the Hiawatha.

Information for eBike riders : Because every rider, eBike, road condition, and elevation profile is different, it is ultimately up to the participant to judge best whether their battery will last through each tour day. We recommend using pedal assist in its lowest setting or off when not needed to maximize battery range. Bringing a second battery is also recommended, and it will need to be carried by the participant.

Idaho Coeur d’Alene & the Hiawatha Bike Tour

Smooth riding with stunning scenery, coeur d’alenes and route of the hiawatha.

Come to Idaho for some of the most incredible rail trail riding in the country: The famous Route of the Hiawatha and the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. You’ll get to check these two Rail-to-Trail Conservancy’s Hall of Fame trails off of your bucket list! The Hiawatha treats you to 10 tunnels, including the famous “Taft Tunnel” at 8771 feet long, and 7 steel trestles – one of which is 220 feet high. As you can imagine, stunning scenery and grand vistas await!

An awesome highlight: riding though the 1.66 mile Taft Tunnel. This tunnel was used by the Milwaukee railroad to cross between Idaho and Montana under the crest of the Bitterroot Mountains. Midway through the tunnel an interpretive sign shows the border between the states which was first reached by railroad crews in 1907. There is also a beautiful waterfall at the west portal of the tunnel. You will want to bring a good bike light as the tunnel is dark.

Rail Trail Hall of Fame

Both the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes and theRoute of the Hiawatha have been named to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s Rail-Trail Hall of Fame; they are two of the most distinct and memorable rail-trail experiences in the country.

NorPac is an 11-mile extension from Mullan

This extension goes to Lookout Pass on the Idaho-Montana border.

Blackwell Hotel

Silver Mountain Resort

Day 1:    Today’s ride beings in Spokane, WA.  There are two ride options today. Day 2:  Your ride begins in Plummer, Idaho along the shoreline of sparkling Lake Coeur d’Alene.  The silky pavement makes the ride sheer joy. Parts of the trail are on a levee that was built for the Union Pacific Railroad in the middle of the lake, you feel like you are floating on the water. As the trail departs Lake Coeur d’Alene it begins to follow the Coeur d’Alene River through Silver Valley as you ride to Kellogg, Idaho.

Day 3:  Begin your day in East Portal, Montana . Enjoy cycling through the 1.7 mile long Taft Tunnel that travels through the Continental Divide under the Bitterroot Mountain Range and delivers you into Idaho.  You are now on the Route of the Hiawatha Trail, The Loop Creek valley opens before you, serving up absolutely breathtaking scenery with spectacular views from the 7 high railroad trestles you’ll cross.

“The tour was phenomenal, everything about the accommodations and activities was top-notch. I cannot say enough positive things about our tour guides – their knowledge and professionalism were unparalleled … For someone like myself for whom this was a major step outside of my comfort zone, this was especially appreciated. This was easily one of the best vacations of my life.”

Explore the Rails-to-Trails of the Pacific Northwest!

ROW's biking division, Ride Our World, is proud to offer three distinct itineraries in two different parts of the Pacific Northwest. These rides take advantage of several delightful rails-to-trails that keep cars and bicycles separated as much as possible. Rails-to-trails are conversions of abandoned railroad lines into trails designed for non-motorized recreation. The first conversion in the U.S. was in 1967 and today the U.S. boasts an extensive system of these trails around the country. Converted railroad beds are ideal for cycling tours as they have minimal elevation gain or loss. In addition, they often follow rivers, lakeshores and pass through some of the world’s most dramatic scenery.  Some are also engineering wonders, with tunnels and trestles originally built to cross rugged landscapes. Our biking tours are lodge-based and designed with hand-picked local accommodations. We also carefully choose locally-owned restaurants that feature the best of Pacific Northwest cuisine.

Near our headquarters in Coeur d’Alene, we are lucky to have some of the best rails-to-trails in the nation including two that are in the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame !  These are the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes and the legendary Route of the Hiawatha .  Our three-state cycling tours take place on these two trails as well as the Washington/Idaho Centennial Trail and the Route of the Olympian .  We have bases in both Spokane and Coeur d’Alene and as a local company you benefit from both our extensive knowledge of the area, as well as our local guides. We offer both a regular bike tour and an E-bike tour for this North Idaho cycling itinerary.

Our other Pacific Northwest cycling adventure is an E-bike tour to explore the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. Utilizing a mix of dirt roads and rail trails, we also include some easy hikes in areas such as the magical Hoh rainforest and spectacular Hurricane Ridge. We stay in a variety of lodges along the way, including at least two historic National Park lodges.  This fantastic cycling tour starts and ends in Seattle making for easy access by road, train or air.

We believe bike tours should have the least possible amount of driving, while also highlighting the most scenic sections of trail. Carefully crafted, and led by our professional, enthusiastic and talented guides, we orchestrate our cycling tours to give you a life-enriching immersion into the landscape of these areas while sharing local history, culture and culinary delights. Come join us for laughter, discovery, and learning!

Here in Britain our green laning is limited to a select number of legal trails. Take a trip across the pond however and you’ll be blessed with a world of opportunity.

Some of America’s best dual sport riding comes in the form of Backcountry Discovery Routes and there are a handful that are currently on offer with others being developed as we speak.

discovery bike tours idaho

Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route

Among the routes is the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route (IDBDR), the fifth route developed by the Backcountry Discovery Routes organisation which covers 1,250 miles of predominantly unpaved track.

It begins in the old western town of Jarbridge, Nevada and passes through the west side of the Idaho Rocky Mountains en route to the Canadian Border at the Idaho Panhandle.

Along the way, riders will have the joy of riding various stunning and historic roads including the Magruder Corridor and the Lolo Motorway. The route, which is ideal for all dual sport lovers, also passes through a handful of small mountain towns.

Those taking on the route will be blessed with a plethora of tracks passing through pristine woodland, up mountain passes and alongside glorious lakes. Some of the views are just unbelievable.

Watch the short video below to catch a glimpse of some of the brilliant riding on offer.

We ride beneath the shadows of Greylock Mountain, cycling quick chutes through the Boise and Payette river backcountry. Like off-ramps to paradise, our course features stopovers at a succession of remote natural hot springs. Other highlights include a triad of noteworthy mining towns: Atlanta, Lowman, and Pine.

We offer two tour options: one that merges kinder-gentler riding with soothing hotspring soaks (Intro tour); the other, a main-course spiced with challenging trails, but finished with warm mountainside upwelling (Singletrack tour). Either way, Mother Nature’s healing waters, forever sought by people the world over await us each night, witnessed only by the starry constellations overhead.

“Great Guides.  I would choose them again!!  Both Jacques & Max embodied what a good guide should be.  They made every ride an event that in the end was memorable.” – Paul & Neil, Idaho Singletrack and Hot Springs

Day 1-2 : Meet in Boise. Shuttle to Pine. Ride the Green Creek Trail, cradled by big, beautiful Boise National Forest. Cool off in the South Fork of the Boise River. Relax in the Paradise Hot Springs, next to camp. A short shuttle to the Yuba River Trail deep, within the Sawtooth Mountains; closed out by a ride into the mining town of Atlanta. Layover here: alongside a cascading hot spring. Day 3-4: Ride the challenging Decker Creek Trail. Shuttle to Banner Ridge; then descend 3000-ft to the roaring Payette River. The hotsprings just keep on coming, made all the more pleasurable—or necessary—on the heels of climbing the burly Deadwood Ridge trail. Day 5: Shuttle to Banner Ridge: cruise the latter’s densely wooded cross-country trails. Unmatched views onto the Steel Mountain, Sunset and Pilot Peaks, plus a thoroughly picturesque constant defines our last day’s riding. Shuttle back to Boise.

Tents in Meadow

The food tastes better, the sky is certainly bigger, and your mind is clearer.

There is nothing better than rolling into camp to fresh made chips and salsa, homemade guacamole, and Dutch oven enchiladas. Then making your way to a sweet and inviting campfire, sharing your favorite anecdote or image from the day’s activities while marshmallows roast. Enjoy a small-batch, local beer before retiring to your tent. Inside: a sturdy raised cot, fluffy sleeping bag, and a plush full size pillow. Wow. You earned this. Sweet dreams.

Each of our guides is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced guides make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, camping gear and plenty of drinking water to a remote location.

Paris-Roubaix 2024: How to Watch a UCI World Tour Cycling Livestream for Free

The world's best riders take on the Queen of the Classics.

discovery bike tours idaho

The UCI World Tour heads to the rugged roads of northern France this weekend for the 2024 edition of the Paris-Roubaix.

Widely regarded as the toughest one-day race on the road cycling calendar, Paris-Roubaix features some of the most grueling cobblestone stretches on any of the Spring Classics. The peloton's ordeal eventually concludes after almost 160 miles in the iconic velodrome in Roubaix.

Last year's event saw Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) claim victory in the men's race while Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale) was the 2023 women's race winner.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  to use to watch the Paris-Roubaix live wherever you are in the world.

Max Walscheid of Germany and Team Cofidis riding along a cobbled stretch, while spectators behind a barrier with flags cheer on from the sides at the 2023 Max Walscheid of Germany and Team Cofidis race.

The 256.6km one-day race is known as "The Hell of the North," and these cobblestones might give you a clue as to why.

Paris-Roubaix 2024: Where and when is it?

The 2024 Paris Roubaix Femmes takes place on Saturday, April 6, at 1:35 p.m. CET local time, making it a 7:35 a.m. ET or 4:35 a.m. PT start in the US . For viewers in the UK it's a 12:35 p.m. BST start , while in Australia the action begins at 9:35 p.m. AEST .

The Men's race meanwhile starts on Sunday, April 7 at 11:10 a.m. CET local time, which is 5:10 a.m. ET or 2:10 a.m. PT in the US, 10:10 a.m. BST in the UK and 7:10 p.m. in Australia.

How to watch the Paris-Roubaix 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the race locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to what you want to watch. If your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Looking for other options? Be sure to check out some of the other great  VPN deals  taking place right now.

Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

A subscription to FloBikes currently costs $150 per year (roughly CA$190), which works out at $12.50 per month (roughly CA$16). The service has dedicated apps for Android and Apple devices.

Quick tips for streaming Paris-Roubaix 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the 2024 Paris-Roubaix live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .
