Entry Level Biker Looking at Trek 4900

Hey all, I am planning on getting an entry level trusty mountain bike. I went to some dealers, and I was shown a Trek 4900 (2006 model) with disc brakes, which seems to be pretty much what I want. I have a budget of around 700 dollars, and this bikes fits it very well (including all the other accessories). I was wondering if you guys have any recommendation of any bikes by Giant, Specialized, or Gary Fisher within the same price range that I might want to look. Also, does anyone know where is Trek 4900 made? In USA or out of it? Thanks a lot!  

I would say as far as hardtails go-the Trek 4900 is an intermediate level bike. The beginner level bikes from Trek would be the 3700,4300,and the 4300disc. I actually ordered a 4900 from my LBS and was told it would be a 2 month wait because that model was on back-order from Trek. I was willing to wait because I felt the 4900 was the right bike for me. I began to get impatient ( THANK GOD ) and test rode a Gary Fisher Piranha. I immediately cancelled my order and got my deposit back and purchased the Fisher. The Piranha has a better fork, better brakes, better frame, better geometery ( Genesis Geometry is great ) better tires, shifters, crankset,ect. Not to mention it's lighter and better looking! The Piranha is only about 50 or 60 dollars more and is well worth it. Do your self a favor and check one out! I had a Trek and wanted another but now I ride Fisher. The Piranha has made me a better rider and any of the Fisher Genesis Hardtails will do the same for you.

Also look at the 6500. No discs, but I got my 6500 for 699 so you are getting a better bike (-the disks) than the 4900 for the same price. Just a thought.  

If you don't require new, look into the 05 6500 too. My dad has the 06 4900 and I have the 05 6500. Overall, the fork on the 4900 is incredibly bouncy. Good for beginners, but it doesn't have lockout so it's a pain in the climbs.  

I should clarify a bit. I rode a 21 inch Trek and test rode a 21 inch Fisher and did not like the fit, it was not untill I rode a 19 inch Genesis frame that I realized what I was missing. I do agree with you that what feels good to one may not to another, I just happen to really love the Genesis frames. I do think I am a better rider on the Fisher though. I am much faster, I can carry more speed through turns and switch-backs, I seem to be able to pick and maintain better lines, I can get the front end up over obstacles much easier, and I can ride for much longer without getting tired. This is no doubt due to the bike performing better than my old bike but it still makes me a better rider on the same trails I rode on my Trek. The Fisher just handles quicker than my Trek did. The Trek 4900 has a more upright riding position and the Fisher Piranha has a more "aggressive" riding position. Obviously, both are good, quality bikes and it comes down to how each rider feels on the bike. Have a good one!  

Thanks a lot guys for your input. I test rode the GF Piranha, but I dont know, for some reason, I seemed to like the stance of the Trek 4900 better. It gave me a sense of better control over the Piranha. One of my friends raised a concern over the mechanical disc brakes though. The 4900 comes with a mechanical disc brake, and my friend says that there are many complications when it comes to maintainence. He says that having a hydraulic disc brake would be better, than having a mechanical disc brake. What do you all think?  

As far as I know, mechanical discs are much easier to maintain and adjust than hydraulic discs. The advantage of hydraulics is power. My GF Piranha has Hayes HMX-2 mechanical discs and they work GREAT. Easy to maintain and adjust. My girlfriends bike has hydraulic discs and they are VERY powerful but are a pain to adjust and keep adjusted. I'm not sure about the quality of the Shimano disc brakes on the 4900, but they should still be better than V-brakes. I wouldn't worry about having mechanicals.

I believe a properly setup hydraulic disc brake requries minimal maintenance. A properly setup mechanical should also require minimal maintenance. The only thing about hydraulics is if you ever need to bleed it.

Note that Trek hard tails have a different geometry for 4900 and below vs. 6500 and above. Try both and try to ride the bikes off the road and up/down something steep, if at all possible. Disc brakes are cool. I want them. But, they aren't free. For a given price, if you are getting a bike spec'd with disc brakes, then some other components will have a lower spec. I would suggest that for an entry level to mid level bike, you might be better off getting a bike with V's and better fork, cranks, etc. V brakes really do work pretty well. Still, discs are cool! -BD  

Thanks a lot guys... yes, it seems as if Mechanical Disc brakes wont be giving me troubles. I test rode a couple of bikes, including gary fisher and giant, but I still feel attracted towards this Trek 4900. Its fits right in my budget, and feels just right while riding it. I will be doing real hardcore offroad riding only once or twice a week, but I will be riding it everyday for commute, on unpaved road. I think I might just buy this one. What do you all think about 4900 in general? Have any advices for me before my decision is final and I run to the store?  

I say go for it. You cant go wrong with trek. Before I opted to spend a grand on a new bike, I was looking at the 4900. It is a good bike for the money. The only advie I would give is this though. For another 100 bucks you can get the trek 6500. It dosent have the disc brakes, but, It has the slr frame which is lighter than the 4900 frame. It also has alot of other better components, such as an xt rear derailleur which isnt bad for the price. My lbs charges 699 for the 6500. either way though, whatever bike you choose will be the right decision for you. good luck with it and tell us which one ya pick  

Go For It! I've been owning a Trek 4900 '06 model for about two months now, and honestly, I've been pretty happy with it. I was on a tight budget, so I decided to get the 4900, but honestly, once you ride it, it wont feel like a budget bike. Its got the Trek name stamped on to it, and it lives up to the name. Its definitely going to fulfill all of your expectations as an entry level mountain biker. It exposes you to the decent technologies-- LX deraileur, disc brakes, and nice suspension. As u start learning more, this bike will be able to keep up, i.e. you can pretty much upgrade any component on this bike.... so ya, its definitely a very decent bike for entry level biker!

Trek 2001 4900 Hardtail Bike

It is my only mtb, I also have a Peugeot road bike and a 2019 Brompton 6 speed. This was my first "real" bike jumping out of the Walmart/Academy dept store types. It was much lighter and more fun to ride, until I got the Peugeot. It was faster and more reliable too. I still have it cause it's good to have a decent mtb especially living out in the country but I mostly use it as my indoor trainer now. The black/red paint job looks great and has held up nicely. Suggest upgrading the shifter at least. It is a 2001 so that's to be expected I guess.

Shifting could be more precise

A good buy for an intro machine.

All the Bontrager components work great light wieght and strong frame

front shifter, and the seat is terrible

This is a great bike for the money. It can take more than most bikes that cost twice as much. Very reliable and manuverable around the tight singletrack of the east coast. The frame is super light and hasnt broke yet despite some harsh rides. TREK RULES.

Dear Reader I have put 1,200 miles on this product in less than one year without any problems. It is heavy (30 pounds), and well built. However, the stock drive-train is pure junk, so I changed the FD to Shimano LX and the RD to Shimano XT. In addition, RE-1's have replaced the stock OEM pedals. The aforementioned setup has worked very well, and the component change was well worth it. The Trek 4900 is a good value, and is holding-up very well. If you want a solid product for between $500-$600, then the Trek 4900 is a tough act to beat. Thank You Russ PS: The 2004 4900 will a use Alpha SL frame, which makes the 4900 an even better value at this price range.

Very nice to start out, great frame so you can upgrade as you go. go out and buy this bike. now. unless you already have a nicer one.

This bike is a great bang for the buck. Though it's not the lightest out there, and the fork isn't the greatest, it's a great riding bike and is worthy of pretty much anything. I have been riding it almost nonstop for the last six months and nothing has broken. The wheelset is the best part, though the name brand stem, seatpost, and handlebar might fool others into buying it. If you are looking for a bike that can handle moderate abuse and won't break down, even if you beat the crap outta it, the Trek 4900 is the one to choose. Just replace that seat and fork!

Has held up well with daily use (50% road 50% trail) It feels right, I don't like the new up-right posistion a lot of bikes have.

Could be a bit lighter. Saddle is just uncomfortable. Tried to get use to it, but after a month put my old one on. Bontanger tires pack up bad. Even on wet hard-pack they just fill up.

Th fron derailer cabel streached so much in the first week I couldn't even get in top ring holding the shifter in. Reset the cabel twice and now it's working fine. This bike dosen't seem to need 1/4 the adjustments that the old one did. Just clean it, lube it up, and go.

nice frame, like the tires, brakes are awsome, an alaround good bike.

pedals/cranks, shock makes a ton of noise, hard seat, adn rims bend easy but if you learn to true them up at www.mountainbike.com adn go to help under weels/tires its not that bad. all these things don't add up to muck though

great bike for the money adn youi get a name brand which i think is a plus. every body omplains about why they would put acera adn deore together but how often to u use the front!!! i don't thing it's that tough though. the biggest jumps i do are three feet because i think i'm going to bend the tires like a pretsal or something although i might be wrong because i never tried it. i am satisfied with the bike

Tires! Supposedly they're decent, but I thought that they were horrible. Also the seat is very, very, very uncomfortable. Grips slide off.

Well here it is: This is the first "bike" that I've ever owned (aside from the usual huffy). I did a little racing for my university on it. But mostly I just take it once a week out to the local mtn bike trails. Although I keep seeing others with nicer bikes, I remind myself that it is not all necessary. I believe that the rider makes the ride, not the bike. So overall I think that this bike is good enough for most riders. No problems with it at all. The best bicycle quote ever, "for all those weight freaks, that need to spend all the extra cash on the lightest parts....just lose a couple pounds"

Trek 4300 Mountain Bike Features

Frame and fork.

First things first, the frame is a crucial component of any bike. In the case of the Trek 4300, it’s made of aluminum, which is a popular choice due to its durability, affordability, and lightweight. 

In fact, the original 4300 model used Trek’s Alpha Aluminum frame that’s tough enough to handle rugged trails with ease. As the model progressed, Trek introduced the Alpha Gold Aluminum material for the frame of the later versions of the 4300. 

This updated version has a more aggressive race geometry for speed, with internal cable routing for durability, and rack mounts for versatility.

You’ll also find that it has a replaceable derailleur hanger. Now, these upgrades made the bike more versatile and allowed it to handle a wider range of terrain.

Moving on to the fork, the Trek 4300 is a classic hardtail mountain bike with a front fork. This means that the front wheel is equipped with a suspension system that can absorb shocks and vibrations, making for a smoother ride on moderate terrain. 

The suspension fork has 70-100 mm travel, depending on the specific model, and it’s designed to handle mountain trails. However, it’s important to note that the suspension fork isn’t long enough to handle descents on rough trails.

But the bigger 27.5 and 29″ wheels actually provide more stability and comfort, which is why they are now preferred for mountain biking.

Despite the small wheels, the double-walled rims and 32-spoke design of the Trek 4300 are pretty solid and tough enough to withstand years of abuse on the trails.

At the end of the day, the wheels and tires on the Trek 4300 are a great combination for riders who want to tackle technical terrain and need a bike that can handle quick acceleration and tight cornering. 

While the market may be shifting towards larger wheels, the Trek 4300 is still a great option for those who value nimble handling and puncture resistance.

Size and weight

When it comes to finding the right fit, the Trek 4300 Mountain Bike has got you covered. With a wide range of frame sizes available, from 13″ to 22.5″, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your body type. 

Actually, you may find sizes ranging from 13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21.5, 23.5″. But since these bikes have been discontinued by Trek, finding them in the exact size you want may be a challenge.

One thing to keep in mind is that the bike weighs around 28.2lbs (12.8 kg), which might not make it the lightest bike on the market. I believe this is due to the front fork, which adds weight but also adds extra shock absorption for a more comfortable ride. 

However, this bike is sturdy enough to support riders up to 265 lbs of body weight.

Ride quality and performance

The Trek 4300 Mountain Bike offers fun and confident rides on the trails, whether you’re hitting the trails or cruising around town. 

While it’s considered an entry-level mountain bike, don’t let that fool you. It’s a reliable bike that can be used for commuting, leisurely rides, or for hitting some challenging trails.

These models are more advanced and come at a higher price point than the budget options available from brands like Schwinn and Mongoose, but the investment is worth it as the quality is unmatched.

In my opinion, the Trek Marlin 5 and Schwinn Traxion are great alternatives for the Trek 4300 mountain bike.

Trek Marlin 5

Trek Marlin 5 is a trail mountain bike that’s built to gracefully handle daily adventures on rough terrains. It has a lightweight aluminum frame with a 2×8 drivetrain for smooth riding and shifting and powerful hydraulic disc brakes which provide fast and precise stopping. 

While the Marlin 5 is made for trail riding, it’s also versatile and can double as a commuter bike. This bike has a stunning frame with internal routing for the brake and shift cables, which can extend the lifespan of your wires by shielding them from the environment.

It’s the perfect bike for new trail riders and comes in seven frame sizes to fit riders of all heights. Marlin 5 is elegant and comfortable, with a ton of features that are typically reserved for more pricey bikes.

Schwinn Traxion

The Traxion MTB is equipped with a remarkably solid aluminum full-suspension frame that easily picks up speed and maintains it very well.

This bike provides comfortable rides and handles bumps well, regardless of where your trail adventures take you. Thanks to the wide knobby tires, sturdy double-walled aluminum rims, and a superb trail-taming Schwinn suspension fork. 

The 24 speed shifters also ensure fluid gear shifting, which makes for a fun and pleasant riding experience. In addition to that, the mechanical disc brakes lock into place instantly when applied, and this ensures precise and efficient stopping.
