Taino/Arawak settlement in the parish was substantiated when in 1792, a surveyor found three carvings, believed to be Amerindian Zemi, in a cave in the Carpenter's Mountains. They are now at the British Museum.

Manchester was formed in 1814, by an Act of the House of Assembly, making it one of the newest parishes of Jamaica. It was formed as a result of the amalgamation of portions of the parishes St. Elizabeth, Clarendon and the entirety of Vere. The amalgamation was done in response to a petition from the inhabitants of Mile Gully, May Pen and Carpenters Mountain who complained that they were too far away from an administrative centre. Manchester was named in honour of the William Montagu, 5th Duke of Manchester, the then Governor of Jamaica. He was governor for 19 years, setting the record as the longest-serving governor of the island. The capital town, Mandeville, established in 1816, was named after his eldest son, Lord Mandeville.

No sugar estates can be found in the parish; slaves worked on coffee plantations. After emancipation, the ex-slaves became independent coffee farmers. The Irish potato was introduced to Jamaica at Bethany, a town in the parish. Citrus also became an important crop, and in 1920, the citrus fruit ortanique, a cross between the orange and tangerine, was developed by Charles Jackson.

Many of Jamaica's businesses were started in Mandeville; the Mandeville Hotel, one of the oldest in the Caribbean, began operations in 1875. The first "Free Library" in Jamaica was established in 1938, and is the oldest parish library.

The growth of the town was given a substantial stimulus when Alcan Bauxite Company opened operations there. It built houses for its then mostly expatriate staff. The relatively high wages lured many educated Jamaicans there. Mandeville continues to grow rapidly due to it being considered one of the most attractive towns in Jamaica and the cleanest of them all.

Mandeville boasts no fewer than 14 shopping centres, two hospitals (one public and one private), medical centres and many doctors. Next to Kingston, it provides the best medical services in the island, a major asset for tourism development.

Throughout Jamaica it’s common to see pedestrians, but in Mandeville these walkers stroll, not just to the market or to a hotel job, but on their morning constitutional. Many folks spend their free time at the Manchester Club, the oldest golf course in the Caribbean. This nine-hole course is set on rolling hills. Nearby tennis courts challenge players and indoor squash courts offer more fast action. Other activities in Mandeville include a tour of the High Mountain Coffee Factory. Jamaica’s second best-known variety after Blue Mountain, this coffee originates on nearby plantations and is produced here at the factory. Tours can be arranged and a sample taste of the island’s java awaits at the gift shop.

Nature lovers flock to Mandeville. Twenty-five bird species are endemic to Jamaica and all but two are found in this region. Garden lovers can stroll the fragrant fields at Mrs. Stephenson’s Garden. The winner of many prizes from the Mandeville Horticulture Society, the gardens are filled with orchids as well as a fruit that was developed in Mandeville: the ortanique. The combination orange and tangerine is unique, hence the name.

In all directions beyond Mandeville’s borders, the roads continue their scenic routes, either into the hills of Christiana, the rich agricultural regions on the drive to Spanish Town and finally Kingston, or on one of Jamaica’s most scenic drives toward the South Coast. Here, Bamboo Avenue winds for over two miles, a green tunnel of tall bamboo that arches over the roadway. Along the road’s edge, vendors sell chilled young coconuts, cracked open with a quick machete chop to reveal the jelly inside.

The South Coast is home to the community of Black River, another must for eco-tourists. While travelers to the North Coast resorts are happy to hear “no problem” as an answer to just about any request, whether its for another Red Stripe beer or a taxi or more towels in the room, in Black River you’ll hear “no problem” in response to spotting a seven-foot crocodile. There’s no need to fear; these crocodiles represent no threat. Unlike their cousins on the Nile, the Americanus crocodilius is not aggressive. Like vacationers on the nearby beaches, they’re content to lie in the sun and take life easy.

INTERESTING FACT: The 44-mile-long Black River is the longest in Jamaica. It is named for the color of its water that comes from the peat bog runoff.

The water on the lower stretch of the Black River is brackish, as saltwater comes in and mixes with the freshwater during high tide. These conditions are perfect for mangroves, which have roots that cascade from high branches and reach the water. The result is a curtain of thick roots, an almost impenetrable fence that divides the river from the marshy swampland beyond the trees.

Black River fishermen use wire traps to catch blue Marie crabs. Shrimp are caught using a traditional trap, an African design dating back over 400 years. The bamboo trap, shaped like a large inverted bottle, holds coconut and oranges in the wide end. After two or three days in the river, the trap is checked and the shrimp fall out when the smaller end is twisted (much like pouring liquid from a bottle). Although crocodiles reside in these tea-colored waters, you’ll see men snorkeling along the river’s edge. With a speargun in hand, they fish for the evening meal. Others fish from dugout canoes, many using techniques brought from Africa’s Niger River centuries ago. The waters are also dotted with bull rushes, giant ferns (one of 600 species found in this country) and pancake lilies.

If you tour the river with a guide, he or she will probably point out things of interest, such as a 35-year-old termite nest and trees where over 3,000 cattle egrets nest nightly. But the biggest attraction on the Black River is the crocodiles. Once hunted, these crocodiles are now protected, but they remain wary of humans. Apple Valley Park consists of parkland, lake and forest surrounding a plantation great house. It offers camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, birding and musical entertainment in the evenings. A tractor-pulled tour of the nearby Black River gorge is one of the most popular attractions. Because the park is visited by locals and visitors, it is also a good spot to people-watch.

This 100-acre working ostrich farm is situated on the Black River. You can boat on the river, fish in ponds or visit a medicinal herb garden.

Beyond Mandeville’s borders, the road west (A2) winds along one of Jamaica’s most scenic stretches, with a green tunnel of tall bamboo that arches over the roadway. Along the road’s edge, vendors sell chilled young coconuts (jelly coconuts), cracking them with a quick machete chop to reveal the jelly inside.

This sheer 1,700-foot cliff drops straight into the sea and provides a beautiful view of the coastline. Travelers can enjoy a drink at the Toby Bar (try the Lovers’ Punch) or dine at the Chardley Restaurant. A miniature farm demonstrates the dry farming technique used in this area. You can also arrange hiking excursions in the hills; call ahead to make arrangements.

A LOVER’S LEGEND

Legend has it that at this site a pair of lovers, escaped slaves, leapt to their deaths rather than face capture.

If you’ve ever visited Lover’s Leap and heard the sad, romantic legend about the cliffs, you’ll want to read Lover’s Leap. Based on the Jamaican legend, the novel was written by Horane Smith, who was born near the South Coast attraction.

Take a soak in natural waters whose high levels of radioactivity soothe aches and pains. The radioactivity here is higher than any other spa in the world, and 54 times more radioactive than the waters of Baden-Baden. The waters are a constant temperature of 92°.

Negril vacationers looking to get away from the sun-loving crowds for a while often take a day trip to YS Falls on the South Coast. These spectacular waterfalls cascade in steps through tropical forest. As spectacular (and far less crowded) as Dunn’s River Falls, YS has remained untouched by hassling vendors and long lines. At the top, swimmers enjoy clear waters under a canopy of ferns. “We try to keep this as private and natural as possible,” says spokesperson Simon Browne.

Why is this falls named YS? The shortest place name in Jamaica has been long debated. Some believe it comes the Gaelic word “wyess” (winding or twisting). Others say the name comes from a combination of the initials of the land’s 1684 owners: John Yates and Lt. Col. Richard Scott.

The land has a long history. The property went into bankruptcy and was held by the Encumbered Estates Court in London for some time. The great-uncle of the present owners traveled to London in 1887 to purchase a property in St. Ann; once he arrived he learned it had already been sold and so he purchased YS. For years, the 8,000-acre farm grew sugarcane, raised cattle and sold logwood trees to Holland, where they were used for making dye. Today there are still some logwood trees along the farm’s fence lines.

The farm covers about 2,500 acres and raises Jamaica Red Poll cattle and thoroughbred racehorses; you’ll also see many papayas grown on the plantation for export.

Coffee Factory Tour

This coffee originates on nearby plantations and is produced here at the factory. Tours can be arranged and guests can stop by the gift shop for a sample taste. The visit isn’t terribly interesting – the factory is, well, a factory – but it has a good gift shop selling High Mountain products.

Just west of the Appleton Estate, this park offers quiet hikes as well as fishing and canoeing. It’s closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

You can take a guided hike to these secluded falls. Bring a bathing suit as well as some money for lunch.

Other hikes in the Mandeville area can be arranged through Countrystyle (876-962-7979 or 800-JAMAICA), or through Perth Great House (876-9962-2822).

MANCHESTER COUNTRY CLUB Caledonia Road at Ward Avenue, near central Mandeville 876-962-2403

This club has the oldest course in Jamaica, one of the oldest in the entire Caribbean. At an elevation of over 2,000 feet, it enjoys much cooler temperatures than the courses found along the coast. Nine greens, 18 tee boxes.

Adventures on Water/ Beaches

Treasure Beach is a great place for a quiet walk – you won’t see the crowds of Negril or Montego Bay along this remote stretch. If you want to swim or snorkel, plan your visit for the morning hours when the sea is at its calmest. These waters can have an undertow and strong currents.

This farm offers horseback rides for most ages. Call ahead to discuss specifics. Be sure to bring your bathing suit for a cool dip afterwards!

This 18th-century plantation offers rides on the grounds of the estate. A quiet place.

ALLIGATOR HOLE Near Alligator Pond, south of Mandeville Hours: daily Free

This small nature park has manatees and crocodiles. There’s a small visitors center here with information on the special residents, but there’s no guarantee that you will spot the creatures. The best time of day to see the shy manatees is late afternoon.

Nature lovers flock to Mandeville, and a top birding spot is Marshall’s Pen, operated by ornithologist Robert Sutton. Tours are conducted by Sutton and are by appointment only. Nearly 100 species have been recorded on this cattle farm and around its great houses. Of the 25 bird species endemic to Jamaica, all but two are found in the Marshall’s Pen area.

Folks don’t come to Mandeville to shop. We did find a very interesting store during our stay, however. The S.W.A. Craft Centre, sponsored by the Soroptimists and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Mandeville Parish Church, features the crafts of local young women. This short-term work provides assistance to unemployed young women, who work at the center sewing, crocheting, embroidering and preparing pastries. Located just off Caledonia Avenue, the motto of the shop is “God gives birds their food, but they must fly for it”

Manchester-Special Attractions

Several of the parish’s leading factories are open for public tours.

• The High Mountain Coffee Factory in Williamsfield is a must for Coffee fanatics.
• The Pioneer Chocolate Factory, also in Williamsfield, allows visitors to  observe the making of chocolate from fine Jamaican Cocoa.
• The Pic-A-Peppa Factory in Shooters Hill is another one of Manchester’s famous attractions.  There, Jamaica’s answer to famous Pic-A-Peppa sauce is manufactured.

The Manchester Club

Founded in 1868 this is the oldest member’s club in the Caribbean.  It has a ballroom and lounge, four hard tennis courts and a nine hole golf course.

The town has affectionately been called “the Garden City” because of the flowers and plants which adorn most of its public buildings. The Parish Church which was built in 1820 and the Court House which was constructed in 1830 are still major attractions for visitors to the parish.

Martin’s Hill Orchid Sanctuary

The 210 species of Orchids that exist in Jamaica, over 100 can be seen at this reserve. The sanctuary is home to over 30,000 plants, including 25 species which  are endemic to Jamaica.  The Epidendrum Scalpelgerum, which is hard to find to in the wild, grows at Martin’s Hill along with 20 other rare Orchid species.

Stephenson’s Gardens

The pride of Mandeville, this small and charming garden specialises in Orchids and Anthuriums.  The proprietor, Mrs. Carmen Stephenson holds the record for the most prizes in the Manchester Horticultural Show.

Manchester is the sixth largest of fourteen parishes that make up the island of Jamaica. Located in the county of Middlesex, it is often referred to as central Jamaica and is bordered by three other parishes. These are Clarendon, Saint Elizabeth, and Trelawny.

The capital of the parish of Manchester is Mandeville and this town once had the distinction of being considered the cleanest place in all of Jamaica. The parish of Manchester, and Mandeville in particular, is a favorite place for returning residents to settle. This is because in addition to all the amenities of modern living, the climate there is the nearest to what obtains in North America in terms of cool temperatures. There are colder places in the parish however, one of which is a place called Coleyville. There are nights when the fog is so thick there it is difficult to see beyond 10 feet, and at times this fog does not totally dissipate until well after sunrise. Stories are told of a man who when he went to a shop and ordered a cold beer the shopkeeper gave him one from off the shelf. The purchaser had no complaints; it was indeed that cold!

Manchester offers world-class health care service as it is served by two public hospitals, the Mandeville Hospital and the Percy Junor Hospital. In addition to these there is also the private Hargreaves Hospital and a plethora of private medical practices and clinics scattered generously throughout the parish. As it relates to educational institutions Manchester is represented at every level from kindergarten through University. The parish has in the past brought home the school challenge quiz trophy, underlining its intellectual supremacy among high schools throughout the country. It is also note-worthy that one of the island’s top three universities, the Northern Caribbean University, is domiciled in Manchester. This university has many international students in addition to its local student cohort. The parish of Manchester also stands out in the area of sports, especially track and field. The Manchester High School and the Holmwood Technical High School girls have won the annual Girls Track and Field Championships no less than eleven times between them. The Holmwood girls have taken home the coveted trophy for the last eight years in succession, 2003 through 2010. Both schools have acquitted themselves well at the Pennsylvania Relays track and field meet held annually in the United States. Some of the girls eventually go on to take up track scholarships overseas.

In so far as industry and commerce in Manchester is concerned West Indies Aluminum Company (WINDALCO) is a major player. Windalco, which is owned by Russian UC Rusal, deals in the production and exportation of bauxite, and is the parish’s biggest employer. Farming also plays a major role in the economy of the parish and many of the residents are what are considered small farmers. They grow cash crops such as carrots, cabbage, yams, beans, and tomatoes, while some rear livestock such as goats, pigs, and cows. In the past banana was grown on a large scale but that is not the case these days. The parish is noted for growing a lot of Irish potatoes, especially in the Christiana area.

Visitors to the parish will not experience much difficulty in finding comfortable and competitively priced accommodations. These are available at the Golf View Hotel, the Mandeville Hotel, the Tropic View Hotel, and the Villa Bella Hotel. Getting around will not be a problem either as buses, taxis, and rental cars are readily available to get you to wherever you want around the parish or island. For the persons interested in a game of golf or tennis the Manchester Club can accommodate you. Depending on what time of the year you happen to be in Manchester you may be able to watch, or even participate in a few of the sporting activities that take place. One such example is the High Mountain 10k road race, which is usually held in January. The race is named after its sponsors, who produce a world-renowned brand of coffee.

While not as actively marketed to visitors to the island as other sections of the island are, Manchester is well worth paying a visit to. It has a rich history, and for those interested in architecture of earlier eras prime examples are the Mandeville courthouse and the Bloomfield Great House. Both of these are in the town of Mandeville and while access to the interior of the Mandeville courthouse might prove challenging the opposite obtains for the Bloomfield Great House. This is because it has been converted into a restaurant, which serves up excellent local fare. The parish of Manchester happens to be the birthplace of one of Jamaica’s national heroes, Norman Washington Manley. This gentleman would eventually grow up to become one of Jamaica’s Prime Ministers. Another notable son of the parish is one Mr. Audley Shaw, who happens to be a member of parliament and the country’s Minister of Finance at the time of writing this article.

In closing there are three stops every visitor to the parish should do everything in their power to make. One is to buy a curried goat lunch at one of the restaurants at the top of Spur Tree Hill. It is highly likely you will end up eating two. The second stop is in Williamsfield at Tim’s Jerk Center for some finger-licking jerk pork. There is a slight catch here though; as if you are not early the goodies are likely to be finished when you get there. Last, but by no means least, is a stop at Little Ochi for some seafood. Once you taste the first mouthful you will understand why people come from all over the island, covering great distances to eat there. That first mouthful will also fill you with sorrow. This is because you will be reflecting on the fact that in a few minutes you will have gotten to your last mouthful and will have to leave.

If one was to ask what Manchester , Jamaica is known for, the answer to that question would most definitely NOT be the beaches or rivers . Aside from being the haven for retirees and returning residents, there isn't much else that would appeal to a non-Jamaican. Back in the day, it was the centre of bauxite mining.

Now its major town, Mandeville , is known for its cool weather, extravagant homes and many, many car marts that have such great deals that people travel from almost anywhere in Jamaica to make their car purchases.

But non of these reasons have much appeal to the yearly visitors we get to the island. The beach is far more appealing. And just by saying that, I feel I can anticipate your next question, "Are there beaches in Manchester?". If I was correct, then your answer is yes, of course there are. Jamaica is surrounded by the sea and there is a beach or beaches in every single parish, as there are no parishes that are inland, each parish has a coastline.

However, unlike the beaches in St. James , Hanover, St. Ann, Westmoreland and so many other parishes, the beaches in Manchester are not as popular and not as big.

There are only two beaches in Manchester. Here is a little bit about them.

Alligator Pond River & Beach

Sea Riv is another name for the Alligator Pond River. In the parish of Manchester on Jamaica's southcentral coast, lies a fishing community called Alligator Pond. Alligator Pond's shoreline, in contrast to the tourist-focused coasts to the north of the country, is equally about labour and play.

Here, fishermen launch their boats to collect some of the island's most highly prized fish, while women handle the wholesale business of the catch. The sand's edge is lined with weathered restaurants and pubs that serve standard fare like curried goat and Red Stripe beer.

A seafood restaurant called The Little Ochie is housed in a number of beachside huts, some of which are constructed from old fishing boat hulls and have thatched roofs. It has increased in size to accommodate several hundred people and draws customers from all over, including several tour groups.

Sea Riv is situated in Alligator Pond, a neighbourhood bordering St. Elizabeth on Manchester's southernmost point. In fact, many Jamaicans were mistakenly taught at one point that the parish of Manchester doesn't have any rivers, hence it's frequently argued that the village is in St. Elizabeth.

Visiting Sea Riv is comes at no cost! There are a few benches and even a run-down bathroom/changing room available for $50JMD per person. The Don Figueroa Mountain range, which is shaped like an alligator's back when seen from the beach, is the source of the name Alligator Pond. However, there are no alligators in Jamaica; only crocodiles.

Gut River & Beach

In Manchester, Jamaica, there is a river, a beach, and a tiny hamlet collectively known as the Gut River. Locals claim that the name comes from the German word for good.

This mostly underground river emerges into a deep, clean pool about 200 meters from the ocean. Accessible from the road is the swimming and diving pool with natural fresh water.

The beach is accessible by wading along the river and is located in the midst of Long Bay, Manchester, a 20-mile stretch of mostly desolate black sand.

There is a commercial beach property on the east bank of the river that has bar amenities. It can get busy on holidays but is typically fairly calm and allows access to the beach and the river mouth without wading. There is private property on the west bank. The hamlet appears to have no more than ten houses.

It has been debated in the past that Treasure Beach , a popular stretch of beaches in the Manchester's neighbouring parish of St. Elizabeth, is actually a part of Manchester. However, that was laid to rest and it was confirmed that it is not.

Treasure beach is especially known for its black sand beaches and is a major attraction on the island. So, in addition to the two beaches in Manchester, you can add these nearby beaches in Treasure Beach to the list to visit as well.
