Harry Potter London experiences

Many of the Harry Potter experiences are in London so we’ll start with those, but there are lots of other experiences around the country.

1. Take the Harry Potter Studio Tour

Harry Potter World London is probably the experience that most people have heard of, whether they are a Harry Potter fan or not.

It is a multi-award winning tour and one of the best attractions near London for kids so it seems only right to start our own tour of Harry Potter experiences in the UK with it.

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour provides a complete and immersive Harry Potter experience all about the making of Harry Potter. So what is the Harry Potter tour like? Well, first off, it’s not a tour as such.

You’ll get to wander through the studios without a guide and visit film sets, see props that were used in the movies and learn about special effects. There are also interactive activities along the way.

If you’re visiting London at Christmas , you can experience a Harry Potter Christmas at Hogwarts in the Snow (from 12th November to 15th January 2023). It is actually based in Hertfordshire and is one of the best things to do at Christmas in Hertfordshire .

Don’t forget to also check out the London Christmas lights if you’re doing a walking tour. It’s a lovely thing to do at Christmas with kids.

Getting to the Warner Brothers Studios

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London Studio tour Drive Leavesden Hertfordshire WD25 7LR

Many people search for the Harry Potter studio London but it is actually not in London , it is in Hertfordshire, just a little outside of London.

If you have a car, there is a free carpark on-site. You can also take a direct train from central London (Euston) to Watford Junction. From there you can take a shuttle bus to the studios.

If you prefer to stay closer to the studios, check out our guide to the hotels near Harry Potter World for families . Otherwise, visiting the Warner Brother Studios makes a fantastic day trip from London with kids .

Harry Potter Studio tickets

You must buy Harry Potter tickets in advance. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the UK and sells out well in advance.

If you miss out on tickets for the day you want, you can try booking a package instead including transfers from London.

See here for Warner Bros Studio tour with transfer from London (GetYourGuide).

2. Take a Harry Potter Walking Tour

Harry Potter Studio Tours also offer a Harry Potter London tour taking you on a 2.5 walk around London visiting various film locations. You can buy your Harry Potter walking tour tickets here .

3. Visit Platform 9 3/4

Perhaps the next most well known Harry Potter London experience is the Harry Potter Kings Cross Platform 9 3/4 recreation. For years commuting into London I would walk past and not really give it much thought.

There was never a queue of people when I strolled past on the way to work at 7.30 am (or back to the train after a night out) but now when I want to take the kids, there is always a huge queue!

So, either get here very early if you want to avoid queuing or expect a bit of a wait. The trolley is there 24/7 but the only issues with going at unsociable hours are that:

a) you won’t get to take a picture with the flowing Harry Potter scarf because there are no employees there to provide you with this prop.

And b) you will need someone there with you to take a photo as their professional photographer will not be there.

You probably also want to go when the Harry Potter shop at Platform 9 3/4 is open. It sells all the Harry Potter merchandise. You don’t want to miss out on picking up some Harry Potter gifts here.

We found the shop quite expensive so as an alternative, you can find official Harry Potter merchandise here at Popgear .

The Harry Potter shop opening times are 9 am to 7 pm daily. If you can’t get there in person, there’s even a virtual Harry Potter shop.

By the way – on the 1st September every year, there is a special train departure announcement at Kings Cross station.  The train to Hogsmeade departs from Platform 9 3/4 at 11am. Don’t miss it!

4. Enjoy a Harry Potter afternoon tea in London

One thing you really should do when visiting London is to have an afternoon tea. As a Harry Potter fan, you’ll be pleased to know that there are some Harry Potter themed afternoon teas in amongst some of the best places to have afternoon tea in London .

Wands & Wizard Exploratorium – for a fabulously interactive afternoon tea using your wand that you can make at the same venue (see #10 below) to unlock secret compartments in the tea chest and much more.

Cutter and Squidge – for an immersive afternoon tea for wizards in the Potion Room.

The Georgian House Hotel – the afternoon tea is positively wizardly. Even the website cursor is a Harry Potter wand.

5. Take a Harry Potter Muggles Walking Tour

The Harry Potter Muggles Walking Tour is rated as one of the best walking tours in London for Harry Potter fans. You set off from Monument Station and are taken on a walking journey through London to where the world of muggles and wizards meet.

Your guide, a real life witch or wizard, will entertain you with Harry Potter stories and you’ll see secret places along the way.

The company is running private tours currently to adhere to government guidelines. The tour lasts about 2 hours and currently costs £90.00. If you are not able to take the tour, they also have a virtual tour available.

7. Visit the Harry Potter film locations in London

If you want to do your own walking tour at your own pace, here are some of the Harry Potter film locations in London that you can visit. This is a lovely (and free) way to spend a day in London .

Leadenhall Market – where the Diagon Alley scene from the Philosopher’s Stone was filmed (when Harry was first introduced to the wizarding). Look out for the blue optician’s shop at 42 Bull’s Head Passage which was used as the entrance to The Leaky Cauldron.

Australia House – The scenes inside the Gringotts Wizarding Bank were filmed inside Australia House. Although not open to the public, you can take a peek through the glass doors (weekdays only) at the impressive marble interior and great chandeliers.

King Cross Platform 9 3/4 – although there is a Platform 9 3/4 (mentioned above), the station scene in The Philosopher’s Stone was actually filmed between platforms 4 and 5 at Kings Cross Station. The impressive red brick exterior of Kings Cross St Pancras station was also used.

Millenium Bridge – used in the filming of the Half Blood Prince

London Zoo – the reptile house was where Harry Potter started talking in to the python before he knew he was a wizard.

Piccadilly Circus – used in the filming of the Deathly Hallows I where Harry, Hermione and Ron are fleeing from the Death Eaters.

10. Visit Wands and Wizard Exploratorium

The Wands & Wizard Exploratorium shop in London is a fabulous place to take the kids. They have various different events running through the year but the wand making experience is particularly fun.

You can try your hand at making your own magical wand choosing various magical elements to go into it. The wand can interact with the sweet dispensers in the shop or used during the fabulous afternoon tea experience (see #4 above).

Harry Potter experiences in Scotland

11. take the jacobite steam train.

The Jacobite Steam Train (otherwise know as the Hogwarts Express, Hogwarts train or the Harry Potter train Scotland) has been described as the greatest railway journey in the world.

It is a must for all Harry Potter enthusiasts visiting Scotland – although you don’t have to be a die-hard Potterhead to appreciate it. It is a fabulous experience for anyone.

The Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig takes you on a 41 mile (65 km) journey through the incredibly scenic Scottish countryside and, of course, over the Glenfinnian Viaduct (aka Harry Potter Viaduct).

Taking a Harry Potter Studio Tour in London: Everything You Need to Know

Last updated: April 9, 2024 . Written by Laurence Norah - 24 Comments

If you’re a Harry Potter fan visiting the UK, the chances are high that you want to take the Harry Potter Studio Tour near London. This tour, of the Warner Bros. Studio where the majority of the films were shot, is a fascinating experience, and well worth doing even if you’re not a Harry Potter fan.

You can visit places like the Great Hall, the railway station, various filming locations from inside Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, and even Diagon Alley.

Harry Potter Studio Tour - Common Room

As well as visiting the film sets, you will also learn all about how the films were made, see many of the props from the movies, get to participate in some green screen magic, have the opportunity to try Butterbeer, and of course, buy all the Harry Potter merchandise you can imagine!

In this guide we’re going to go through everything you need to know to visit the Harry Potter Studios, including how to get there, how to get tickets, information for making the most of your day, and lots more! Let’s get started by answering some questions you may have.

Where Was Harry Potter Filmed?

Harry Potter was filmed all across the UK, at real world locations such as Glenfinnan Viaduct, Alnwick Castle, Glencoe in Scotland and Leadenhall Market in London . See our full guide to Harry Potter filming locations in the UK for more.

The interior sets and the majority of the rest of the films were shot at the Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden, just outside London.

Where is the Harry Potter Studio Tour?

The Harry Potter Studio Tour takes place in the Warner Bros. Studio, which is found in Leavesden, England. This is around 20 miles northwest of London.

The Warner Bros. Studio is a fully working film studio, one of the largest in the UK, and many films have been shot here, including the whole Harry Potter franchise as well as some of the Star Wars,   Batman , and Mission: Impossible films.

Harry Potter Studio Opening Times

You will definitely want to check the website for up-to-date opening times, but generally throughout the year the studio is open from 8.30am through to 10pm. More specifically:

  • Doors open at 8.30am
  • First tour starts at 9am
  • Final tour starts at 6.30pm
  • Studio closes at 10pm

These times do vary by day. In terms of dates, the Studio is open every day of the week. There are some exceptions, it is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (25th and 26th of December).

How Much Does the Harry Potter Studio Tour Cost?

Prices for the standard tour are as follows (correct as of April 2024).

  • Adult: £53.50
  • Child aged 5-15: £43
  • Childer Under 4: Free
  • Family: £172
  • Carer: Free

For a family, this can be either 2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and 3 children.

You can also purchase more expensive tour packages, but these are the basic prices. Note that these are just entry prices, and don’t include any transport.

Is the Harry Potter Studio Tour Accessible?

The Harry Potter Studio Tour is accessible, and visitors can bring one carer free of charge with proof of entitlement.

For the studio itself, the majority of it is level and accessible for wheelchair users. There are some exceptions, such as the Hogwarts Bridge and the Knights Bus. Diagon Alley also includes an incline and cobbled streets.

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are permitted but mobility scooters cannot be wider than 86cm.

Visitors with assistance dogs are welcome and water bowls can be provided. There’s also a dedicated toilet area for assistance dogs.

For visitors with a hearing impairment, induction loops can be provided. A portable iPad is also available (this must be booked in advance), which can provide a subtitled version of some of the films. It’s also possible to book a BSL tour in advance.

For more information on accessibility and any other needs you have, please visit the accessibility section of the official website.

How to Get to the Harry Potter Studio Tour

You have two major options for getting to the Harry Potter Studio Tour – you can take a tour which includes your transport, or you can make your own way there using either public transport or a car.

We’ll go through both of these options so you can make the right decision as to which is going to be best for you.

Certainly, the easiest option for getting to the Harry Potter Studios is to take a tour which includes your return transport.

These tours leave from various locations around London (and other parts of the UK), and included in the price of your tour will be pre-booked timed entry to the Studio Tour and return transport to and from a pick-up point.

Note that most tours do not include a guide inside the experience as it is largely self-guided. However, you can book a tour, such as this one , which does include a guide for the time inside the studio as well. When choosing tours, do check how long they give you at the studio. You will generally want a minimum of three hours, although you might find four hours will be more suitable if you want to experience everything.

Some options include:

  • This tour  which departs from the Victoria Coach Station in London
  • Another tour with departure from Victoria Coach Station in London
  • A slightly longer tour giving you 4 hours at the studio, with departure from Kings Cross Station, London
  • This is a fully guided tour which includes return transport and a guide throughout the experience.
  • This tour of the Harry Potter studios , which includes return transport from central London hotels
  • If you want to do more on your day, this tour includes a tour of Oxford as well as the Studios , with departures from Great Portland Street, London
  • This tour , with one of our favorite walking tour companies Take Walks includes a short walking tour of central London (including some Harry Potter filming locations in London ), followed by round trip transport to the studio and entry to the Studio Tour for four hours. We’ve done this tour and it is a good option although does make for a full day.

As you can see, there are lots of options! We’ve got more on all of these in the section below on how to buy your tickets for the Studio Tour.

Hagrid Hut interior

By Public Transport

From central London, it’s fairly easy to get to the Harry Potter Studios by public transport. You will take the train from Euston Station to Watford Junction.

Then you need to take a dedicated shuttle bus operated by the Studio Tour that runs from just outside Watford Junction Station (it is well sign posted), that takes you directly to the studios.

Bus to Warner Bros Studio Tour

For the train, you can either buy your tickets in advance here , or you can pay on the day using a contactless or Oyster card. This will require you to tap in and tap out using the yellow card readers. Note that Oyster cards and contactless cards do not work beyond Watford Junction, so don’t go any further than this.

See our  guide to buying and using the Oyster card in London , and our  guide to paying for public transport in London  for more information on using these forms of payment for travel in and around London.

For the shuttle bus, this is included in the price of your entry ticket. To board the bus you will need to have a valid pre-purchased ticket to the Harry Potter Studios, or proof of a ticket booking confirmation (printed or on your phone).

Getting to the Harry Potter Studios by car is relatively easy. Depending on the time of day, exact departure location and traffic, the drive from central London takes around an hour to ninety minutes.

From Oxford it’s around an hour, and it’s around two hours from Birmingham. Visitors with valid pre-purchased Studio tickets can take advantage of free parking on site. Note you cannot enter the parking area without a valid ticket or booking confirmation for that day.

Where to Buy Harry Potter Studio Tour Tickets

If you are making your own way to the Harry Potter studios, you have to buy your ticket in advance from the official website . You cannot turn up without a ticket, and tickets are not for sale on site.

Tickets go on sale well in advance, but despite the site having capacity for up to 6,000 people a day, they tend to sell out far in advance, so you will want to plan as far ahead as possible.

The summer months, weekends, and school holidays are the busiest days of the year for the Studio so we recommend that you book as far in advance as you can if you are visiting over those periods.

Weekdays often have better availability, so if you are flexible, look at different days of the week to maximise your chances of getting a ticket.

Buckbeak

Tickets are for timed entry, which helps the studios manage visitor numbers throughout the day. Whilst there is no limit to how long you can stay after you enter, you do need to enter the attraction at the time you book. There is a little bit of flexibility in this, but it’s best not to show up hours later than your time to avoid disappointment.

The WB Studios Tour folks recommend you arrive at the site at least 20 minutes before your ticket time so you can go through the security checks.

If you can’t buy a ticket from the official site, don’t worry, you still have lots of options.

First, you can opt to take a tour with a tour company, as these have a different ticket allocation system. Whilst this will be slightly more expensive, at least you will still be able to go, and it will include transport as well. See here for some of the tour options available, and here for even more !

Another option is to book a Deluxe Tour, which includes a two-hour guided tour of the studios, a photo package, a hot meal, butterbeer, souvenir guidebook and special designated parking. Following the guided tour, you are free to explore yourself. As Deluxe Tours are more expensive, they tend to have better availability.

Broomstick training

Deluxe Tours can be booked directly with the Studios, subject to availability, on the official site here .

How Long Does the Harry Potter Studio Tour take?

The regular tour itself is self-guided, other than an introduction at the beginning, so you can take as long as you like to wander the studios.

The average length of a visit is around three and a half hours, and that is what the studio estimates most people will take and forecast their capacity around.

Dumbledores office

This is also about the amount of time that most tour companies will give you, although some offer a bit more time on site, so if you think you will need more time, be sure to pick a tour company that offers more time.

Where to Stay Near the Harry Potter Studios

The majority of visitors to the Harry Potter Studios visit from London as a day trip, and choose a hotel in London. If you go down this route, you might want to consider a hotel that makes it easier to get to the studios, be that by public transport or on one of the tours.

We’ve suggested some options below, as well as some hotels near the Studios themselves if you want to be really close.

Note that hotels in London are relatively expensive, especially those located near major attractions, and rooms aren’t always huge. However, we’ve picked what we think are a good choice for you.

We also recommend reading our guide to where to stay in London for some suggested options across all budgets.

Hotels near London Victoria train station (where most bus tours depart)

  • Comfort Inn Buckingham Palace Road – great value 3* property just 5 minutes walk from London Victoria train station
  • The Resident Hotel – well reviewed 4* property, five minutes from London Victoria.
  • Lime Tree Hotel – A well reviewed boutique hotel, around nine minutes walk from London Victoria
  • Walrus Bar and Hostel – it’s not too close to London Victoria (15-20 minutes by public transport, or a 35 minute walk), but it’s very central and is a great budget option for London in general

Hotels near Euston train station (for the train)

  • YHA London St. Pancras – a good value budget option a short walk from both Euston and Kings Cross stations. Offers both private and dormitory style rooms
  • Comfort Inn and Suites King Cross – a great mid-range option, with all rooms coming with a kitchenette
  • Point A Hotels – comfortable, cosy rooms, part of the well rated budget-friendly Point A hotel chain
  • Radisson Blu Edwardian – luxury, boutique accommodation, a short walk from Euston station

Hotels near the Harry Potter Studios

  • Mercure London – one of the closest hotels to the actual studios, this would be a good option if you are driving and want to be as close as possible
  • Holiday Inn Express London – right next to Watford Junction, this mid-range and well reviewed property is convenient for both trains to London, and for the studio shuttle
  • Jurys Inn London Watford – another great mid-range option, just a short walk from Watford Junction train station

Our Harry Potter Studio Tour Review and Experience

Now for the fun stuff! Although, if you want your visit to be a surprise, you might want to skip this section, as you now have everything you need to know in order to visit.

Still, if you want an idea of what to expect from your visit, read on, and we’ll share our own experiences of visiting the Harry Potter Studios! We have actually visited a few times over the years, both via a tour and using our own transport, and well talk about that a bit as well.

The first time we visited the studios we came from central London, taking the train to Watford Junction and the Shuttle Bus to the studio. When we visited there was a fee for the shuttle bus, but this is now included in the price of the ticket. The train was easy, and the shuttle bus departure point was well marked just outside the train station.

We pre-booked our tickets on the official website, so with our email booking confirmation we picked up our tickets from the kiosks. They have both staffed ticket windows and automatic kiosks – both work!

Once we had our ticket, which had our entry time on it, we went through security and joined the line for entry.

On another visit we took a tour to central London to compare the experience, specifically this tour . Whilst getting to the studio ourselves was easy enough, obviously having a bus take us directly to and from the studio from central London did make things even easier. However as it wasn’t a guided tour, once we were on site the experience was the same as visiting ourselves.

Warner Bros Studio Tour Entrance

All entries for the Harry Potter Studio Tour are timed, so you have to wait in line, as they let each group in all together. Still, waiting in line is made fun, as the line has the cupboard under the stairs set right next to it, meaning you can start getting excited about your upcoming adventure straight away (and start taking pictures!).

At the time of our entry, we were all ushered into a large waiting room with a series of screens around the walls and given a brief introduction as to what we might expect. We then went into a cinema where some of the key cast members shared their thoughts. Then, the cinema screen rolled away, revealing a giant wooden door before us. Here, a guide welcomed us, and prepared us for our journey.

Cupboard under the stairs

The Great Hall and Beyond

After our introduction, the massive wooden doors we were standing in front of opened, and the Great Hall was revealed. I have to say, this was pretty amazing, to be able to step into the world of Harry Potter. The Great Hall set was used as the Great Hall for six of the films, with many scenes shot here.

Great Hall Hogwarts

It certainly felt like the most complete of the sets we visited, as it was totally immersive and all around us, and was quite an experience.

From the Great Hall we were essentially allowed to continue on our own into the first half of the tour building. This had so much to see that I won’t go into it all here.

To give you an idea though, you can do everything from practice your wand waving through to seeing the Womping Willow in action through to visiting the potions laboratory, meeting Buckbeak, hanging out on Platform 9 3/4, and wandering around the Forbidden Forest!

Platform 9 3/4 Warner Bros Studio Tour

Food and Butterbeer

Around half way through the tour, you come to the Backlot Cafe. This serves hot and cold food, as well as that famous drink – Butterbeer! This is a non-alcoholic beverage that tastes sort of like a mix of marshmallows and popcorn. It is definitely a must-try when visiting! We can also recommend the Butterbeer icecream which is very good.

Butterbeer

You don’t have to eat here, as there are other dining options on site, including the Studio Cafe. However, if you want to try Butterbeer, the Backlot Cafe is the place to do it.

Privet Drive and the Night Bus

Once you’ve finished your butterbeer experience, it’s time to head outside to Privet Drive! Here you can see the house where Harry grew up, as well as a number of other fairly large props and sets, including the Knight Bus and the bridge that led across the ravine outside Hogwarts.

Knight Bus

This is the only outside part of the tour, and it isn’t a huge area, although if the weather isn’t great you might want a waterproof jacket to enjoy this part of the tour.

Gringotts Bank, Diagon Alley and the Last of the Tour

After seeing the exterior part of the tour, you enter the final part of the tour. Don’t worry though, you’re only really half way though – there’s loads to see still! From here you’re going to see a lot of the props and costumes, as well as detailed information on how these were created, and the work that went into them.

Diagon Alley

You’re also going to have the opportunity to walk through Gringotts Bank, meet a dragon, walk right down Diagon Alley, and see such locations as Ollivanders Wand Shop!

Finally, and perhaps most impressively, you come to the 1:24 scale model of Hogwarts itself. This is a massive construction that fills a whole room, and is truly spectacular. You can also watch videos to see how the model was used and digitally merged into the final films, which is very impressive.

Once you’re done with all the above, you pop out into the shop, where you can buy pretty much any Harry Potter merchandise you can imagine!

Tips for Visiting the Harry Potter Studio

Based on our experiences visiting the Harry Potter Studio in London, we’ve put together the following tips to help you plan your visit and maximise your time.

Decide how you want to visit

As described earlier in detail, you have a number of options for visiting the Harry Potter Studios, although depending on ticket availability, you might not always have every option. However, the main options are:

  • Book a standard tour and plan your own transport, either by train/shuttle or car
  • Book a deluxe tour and plan your own transport, either by train/shuttle or car
  • Book a tour that includes transport and entry like this

Whichever you choose to go for, you will definitely have a great time!

Book your tickets in advance

We can’t emphasise this enough – tickets are not available on site – you have to book in advance . If you’re travelling independently, you can do that through the official site .

If tickets are not available through the official site for the time you want to visit, or you’d rather let someone else handle your transport, here is a good selection of tours to choose from , and here are some more options .

Plan your time

The average visit time is three and a half hours, so make sure you give yourself at least this much time on site. Don’t forget there’s food on-site as well as a massive gift shop, so you’ll want to factor time in for these activities too. Some fans can easily spend 4 or 5 hours here.

Whilst the majority of tours that include transport give you at least three hours on site, some allow for longer visits, so make sure to book the right tour for you. There is a lot to do and see on site, so more time can definitely be put to good use and you don’t want to feel rushed!

harry potter trip in uk

One of the best parts of visiting the Harry Potter Studios is just how interactive the experience can be. Whilst it’s certainly not a theme park, there’s a lot to do, from practicing your wand skills through to pushing your own trolley through the wall at platform 9 3/4 through to riding and summoning your own broomstick!

Some of these experiences will have a short queue, but due to the timed system for entry, these will never be too long.

Many visitors also come in full Harry Potter outfits, so don’t be afraid to dress up and get into the swing of things. You won’t be alone, and it adds to the experience for many people!

what an amazing detailed blog. really helped me understand and plan the trip. I am booked for 1st October 5:30 as didn’t get any other day or time slot on the website,, do you think I should look at going through a tour agent to get more time in the day time or evening is fine? hoping there will be no issues in taking public transport while coming back. we will be staying in Westminster.

Thanks very much! So I think you will be fine. On the 1st October it looks like the studio tour doesn’t close until 10pm, and I would say that 4.5 hours should be more than enough. The last bus to the station leaves at 10pm, so just be sure to be on that. In terms of trains, looking at the West Midlands train timetables, the last train on a Sunday back to central London is at quarter to 1 in the morning, so I think you will be fine.

Enjoy your visit!

My family live on the wirral it would take us about 3 1/ 2 hrs to get there with the price of fuel costly then the stay overnight in the hotel with bed and breakfast. Your outstanding entry price for an adult £48 Kids price extortionate my granddaughter is 8yrs old obsessed with Harry Potter reads the books loves the films she is desperate to come on the studio tour but can’t justify you outrageous prices. And then we have to pay for fuel to travel back. I am registered disabled but not in a wheelchair. My husband is my carer we are also pensioners do you honestly expect a disabled person to pay £48 to get in while OK my carer is free surely you should have compensation for the disabled person. As it stands we have to keep letting the 8yr old down as we can’t afford your prices. Then the added extras for the bus etc. I would ask you to see if you could establish a different rate for children under 10 and the disabled pensioner please as we would bring her but out of our pension we cannot afford your cost. Hope you take into account what I have said. Underprivileged children should be catered for I know.you have to make your money but at the cost of a child. Shame on you. My granddaughter may never get to see it now.xc

Can I take photos throughout the tour ?

23rd July 2021 at 7:02 pm

Yep photography is permitted pretty much everywhere in the Harry Potter studio tour. There are a few exceptions – you can’t do photography in the pre-show cinema, or in the green screen areas. You also can’t use a tripod.

Have a great visit, and let me know if you have any more questions!

13th October 2019 at 4:38 am

Hello! I am so excited to have found your blog. I plan to read the entire london portion. I booked tickets to the studio for 1/1. I thought it would be a fun way to start the new year. Now I am wondering if it will be a problem to get to the studio. TfL site states train will be running on a sunday schedule. How much extra travel time should we think about? Our tix are for 1230p. We are staying by the waterloo station. Thank you for your amazing insights!

13th October 2019 at 3:25 pm

Thanks very much, I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time.

For the trains, all you’d have to do is check the timetables for a Sunday and this should give you an idea of how much time you will need 🙂 You shouldn’t have to worry too much I don’t think, 1230 should give you plenty of time to get there! Have a wonderful time!

Hi thank you for this it is so useful especially for first timers like me. My concern is on the age, in the studios website it says below 16 must be accompanied by adults. I am thinking of sending my 15 and 13 yr old kids on their own. Would this be possible if I take a guided tour instead? Many thanks Nurika

27th September 2019 at 7:02 pm

Unfortunately the policy is that all children must be accompanied by an adult, even on the guided tours

26th September 2019 at 7:33 am

Thank you for you site and sharing some great information!! It is just awesome!!

Would you happen to know the difference between the Studio’s VIP tour and the Fully-Guided Making of Harry Potter Tour. Looks like the Fully-Guided might have a couple more stops?

26th September 2019 at 10:49 pm

So the VIP tour (I guess you mean the Deluxe tour?) includes a few extras like butterbeer, souvenir photo, meal and guidebook. So quite a few extras. The fully guided tour includes the tour, but I believe it’s the same actual tour as the Deluxe tour, just without the extras. Of course, it also include round trip transport from London as well.

So it’s more about if you want the extras or not, or if you prefer the transport.

Have an amazing time, whichever you go for!

Wow! What lovely immersive writing, and lots of fine fine details. A pleasure to read. I’m so glad I stumbled on to this blog. My search is over. Have bookmarked it. Going to follow it faithfully for our first-time holiday to London + Scotland this month. The fully guided tour seems to be the best of the lot as it probably gives you the maximum time possible to spend at the studio (I hope). By the way, tickets are sold out on the official site. Thank you so much, Abraham

3rd May 2019 at 4:39 pm

Hi Abraham – my pleasure, and I hope you have a wonderful tour. For sure, the tours are very popular so they sell out far in advance on the official website, but there are a number of other ways to get a trip, so I hope you are able to visit still 🙂

27th March 2019 at 7:48 pm

Hi can i ask the extra activities you mentioned are they free or do I need to account for extra spending money Regard emma

27th March 2019 at 7:59 pm

So the activities like the wand workshop, broomstick summoning and other interactive things like that are included. The only thing you would need money for is the giftshop, or if you want to eat or try butter beer. For the green screen broomstick flying experience, where you are filmed on a broomstick against a green screen, that is an extra price as you get the experience as photos or a DVD. There are also some other opportunities to buy photos through the tour, but these are of course optional 🙂

Have a wonderful time!

Excellent information! I’ve been to the WB Harry Potter Studios twice (2015, 2017), and you really covered everything in accurate detail.

One tiny error though it probably won’t confuse anyone: You wrote “Then you need to take a dedicated shuttle bus operated by the Studio Tour that runs from just outside Euston Station (it is well sign posted), that takes you directly to the studios.” I believe you meant “Watford Junction Station” instead of “Euston Station” in that sentence.

Thanks for your terrific work on the entire site. A colleague of mine sent me a link to it knowing I have led student/parent groups to London. I’ve enjoyed digging into it!

13th March 2019 at 5:00 pm

Thanks so much for your comment! We loved visiting and writing this post was a real pleasure 🙂 Thanks also for spotting that error – I’ve fixed it now 🙂

Thanks again!

Fact: In my entire life, I’ve only cried once at a tourist attraction.

And judge me all you want, but this cryfest happened at a Harry Potter studio tour.

… Allow me to explain myself.

Like most children born in the 90s, much of my youth was spent daydreaming about the arrival of my Hogwart’s acceptance letter. As this dream dwindled with the hardships of adulting, I instead took comfort in carbs and magical movie marathons.

But, it didn’t take much for these childhood dreams to resurface. A trip to London was all it took to re-open the floodgates (literally).

Let me tell you: for a Harry Potter fan, there is no attraction on this Earth more overwhelming and amazing than the  Warner Bros Studio Tour London, (AKA London’s Harry Potter set tour), which brings you through the filming site for all 8 movies in the Harry Potter franchise.

In addition to sets, you’re also shown countless props, the best gift shop in the world, and even a chance to taste butter beer for yourself. Come on now, is it at all a surprise that I bawled when I got to the end?

Read onwards for important info to know about the tour, some tips to keep in mind and of course, a recap of the experience (with plenty of photos!) Be careful for this section, as spoilers are abound!

Basic information to know about the Harry Potter Set Tour

If you’re interested in booking the epic Warner Bros Studio Tour in London for yourself, then here are some basic must-knows.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Tickets Info:

I first visited this attraction in 2014 and it was a hot mess then, and has only grown in popularity in the past few years.

If this Harry Potter set tour is a must-do for you, then make sure you book your tickets WELL in advance or you risk not being able to go!

Luckily, even when tickets are sold out on the main site, there are tours you can book online that will have tickets available for sold out dates.

Sometimes, booking with a tour is worthwhile because you not only guarantee your tickets, you also get the convenience of private transport there, which is nice and much less stressful than using public transport yourself.

Here is a breakdown of different Harry Potter Studio tour options that include transport. For your convenience, I also lay out their costs and what they have to offer:

Tickets can also be purchased online from the studio itself  here.

How to Get to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London:

Despite its name, the Warner Bros Studio London is actually located in Leavesden, which is northwest of London.

While booking a tour/private transport is the easiest and most convenient way to get there, it is still quite painless to reach via public transit, as a shuttle bus runs from Watford Junction railway station.

To get to the Watford Junction station, you need to make use of London’s overground system.

Not sure about the best route to get there? Check out this handy trip planner .  The tour’s website recommends that you arrive at Watford Junction 45 minutes prior to your tour time.

Remember to bring change, as the cost for the shuttle bus is 2 pounds each way.

NOTE : Leave a lot of leeway for you to get there. We definitely got lost a few times due to the transfers, and were stressed to the max! For a more stress-free experience, consider prebooking a tour that comes with transport. Here’s one for under $100USD.

Tips for Doing the Harry Potter Set Tour Like a Pro

Having addressed the basics, here are some tips you should keep in mind when planning your visit:

1. Check on the Warner Bros Studio Tour website for special events

The studio tour often has special weeks during which there are specialized displays or demonstrations.

If you have quite some time in London, I suggest looking up when special events are happening and to plan accordingly.

I was luckily around for the beginning of Wand Week, so I got to see wandmakers do their thing and I even got to pose with some Death Eaters. Super cool!

harry potter trip in uk

2. Allow extra time for travel

Especially if you are new to London, trying to navigate the transit there can take time, so give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the studio.

That being said, do not hyperventilate if your ticketed time is fast approaching. While the reservation system does assign you a time, they won’t turn you away if you are a bit late.

harry potter trip in uk

3. Don’t forget to print your Warner Bros Studio Tour ticket

This will make the whole process smoother.

One girl that came with us didn’t print hers and upon arrival, she realized that her order never actually went through.

Luckily, even though they claim there is no box office at the attraction, she was able to purchase a ticket there, but do book in advance to save yourself the trouble.

4. Set yourself a budget for magical souvenirs

Trust me, when you enter the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop for the first time, you will lose all sense of self control.

You will suddenly want all these things that you would never need.

Legit wizard robe? Okay!

Replica wand? Yes please.

There are so many amazingly crafted souvenirs for sale that you will easily empty your wallet.

For budget-conscious backpackers (like me) or large families with crying children, setting a budget beforehand is a must.

harry potter trip in uk

5. Grab yourself a free Warner Bros Studio Tour London passport

At some point during the tour, you might notice children getting awesome embossed stamps on a Harry Potter passport.

Uh, yeah, those are actually not just for kids!

I shamelessly (and sweetly) asked a staff member for one, and they kindly obliged.

Getting the stamps is fun and having a Harry Potter passport is pretty much the best souvenir ever.

6. Be sure to check out other Harry Potter filming locations around the UK too

If you’ve made it all the way to Leavesden, you’re actually pretty close to a variety of other Harry Potter filming locations!

While this set tour is of course incredible, there are dozens of other real-life filming locations scattered around the UK that you can visit for yourself. Click here for a full list.

Harry Potter Set Tour Recap with Photos

With those tips out of the way, I’d love to show you some photos and a brief overview of the experience from my visit in 2014. Note that they have added a lot since then, but still…

WARNING: spoilers, spoilers, spoilers.

Some would say that the best way to experience this tour is by seeing everything first hand, but if you are curious to see photos and more, feel free to scroll further.

harry potter trip in uk

Your magical experience begins as soon as you walk into the building. All around the lobby are canvases with various Harry Potter characters, as well as props and other cool artifacts hanging off the walls.

Even the task of waiting in line (typically the most mundane thing ever) is a joy for this tour.

The queue moves very quickly and there is plenty for you to nerd out about as you wait.

Most notably, Harry’s  cupboard under the stairs , is right next to the queuing area, ensuring that you get a perfect view of this iconic set.

harry potter trip in uk

You’ll notice that groups are taken in based on their spot in line, rather than their timed reservation.

This is why there is some flexibility when it comes to your arrival time.

If you’re a few minutes late, no worries, just hop in the queue and you will make it in all-the-same.

The tour begins with a brief video introduction to the franchise, followed by a preshow featuring Rupert, Daniel and Emma themselves.

As this preshow concludes, the screen reveals the doors to the  Great Hall!  During my tour, they invited any birthday kids to come up and help open the doors.

After  seriously  wishing it was my birthday, I bitterly watched two ecstatic kids live out their childhood dreams, revealing the first stop of the tour, the amazing…

1. Great Hall!

This is the the only part of the tour where your time will be limited, as they let tour groups in every few minutes.

As such, if you want photos, be sure to snap them  quickly !

Being in this room is an unreal feeling. In addition to the long tables, cutlery and elaborate set pieces, you also get to view costumes from students in each house, and important Hogwarts faculty as well!

harry potter trip in uk

2. The Big Room

After your time in the Great Hall, you are brought into the  Big Room , which houses a variety of sets, props and costumes.

Here, you are given free reign to explore for yourself and gawk at all the amazing pieces the room contains!

Highlights for me were definitely the  Potions classroom  (complete with a Snape costume on display),  the Gryffindor Common Room  and  the Weasley House .

harry potter trip in uk

Many of the sets also have interactive buttons where you can make objects move by pressing them.

This was especially cool in the Weasley kitchen, where the touch of a button could make an iron move on its own, make vegetables chop themselves, etc. Super neat!

harry potter trip in uk

For those seeking a sweet photo opp, there are several green screen opportunities to ride a broom as a Quidditch player and more! I didn’t wait in line for this bit, but it definitely looked like a lot of fun! Here are some photos from the Big Room:

3. The Backlot

After perusing the Big Room, you are brought outside to the  Backlot , home to a variety of sets including Harry’s  Privet Drive home , the  Hogwarts Bridge , the  Knight Bus  and of course,  the concession stands!

It’s at this point in the tour that you can live out your childhood fantasy of sipping a nice, cold  butterbeer.

harry potter trip in uk

Be sure to explore the bridge before you purchase a butterbeer, as no food or drink is allowed on that set.

harry potter trip in uk

Now, while public opinion seems to be split on the taste of butterbeer, I have to say that  I. loved. every. single. sip.

It’s very possible that I was blinded by the magic of my surroundings, but I would argue that it’s worth a try regardless!

NOTE: If you want to purchase a souvenir cup, remember to bring a bag or something to wrap it in, as that stuff can get mighty sticky. Here’s a sample of the cool things you’ll see in the backlot!

4. Art Department, Creature Effects and Diagon Alley

When you’re ready to go back inside, countless wonders from the  creature effects & art department  await you. Here, you really get to appreciate the depth of work put into creating a whole magical world.

I was really wowed by everything.

harry potter trip in uk

In this area, you will see masks, wigs, models and more of your favourite magical creatures.

In this second half of the tour as well, you get to walk through Diagon Alley. The details and work in the set will absolutely blow you away. The shops look so real, you’ll be tempted to go knocking on their doors.

harry potter trip in uk

5. Hogwarts Castle Model

And lastly, the grand finale of the Harry Potter set tour… The model of Hogwarts!

This one here is a real showstopper.

A walkway surrounding the model allows you to view it from all angles, taking in the fine details of this wonderful school.

For many Harry Potter fans, seeing the castle like this is a dream come true. Now, if only it were real!

harry potter trip in uk

At the end of the tour, just before the entrance of the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop, you will see this wonderfully beautiful quote appear on the screen:

harry potter trip in uk

It was at this point that  I began to bawl.  I couldn’t help it!

Everything that I loved about the series had been shown to me in the past few hours, and for that short period of time, I got to live out my dream of seeing the magical world that made my childhood.

Messy and gross, I walked into the gift shop, which was a massive treasure trove of things you never knew you wanted or needed. Wands for every character? I’ll take 100.

And there you have it,  the most magical experience ever . One day, I  will   visit the Wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but until then, I think this tour has given me enough happy & geeky memories to last. …. At least for the next little while.

Any more questions about visiting the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London?

Over to you – have you ever been to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London? IF NOT, THEN WTF ARE YOU WAITING FOR? No jk, uh I meant to ask, which part would you most look forward to?!

Enjoyed every bit of your blog article.Much thanks again. Really Cool.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

bookmarked!!, I like your blog!

thanks Jane!! 😀

Hi Christina! I’m going to be traveling alone to London this week, would the Harry Potter tour be fun for a solo traveler? Also, I was considering buying a groupon for a night tour, but the picture of you holding the butter beer appears to be outside? I guess we would be missing this part of the tour if I went at night then eh?

hi Lisa, I hope this comment isn’t too late! but YES YES YES the tour would 100% still be fun as a solo traveler (provided that you like Harry Potter haha). I didn’t realize they had a special night tour, but the butterbeer was outside in a special lot where they had lots of big props and set pieces (it’s part of the tour) so I can’t imagine they would leave it out for any reason. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Thank you for this article and the pics. I always need to take a peek of the atmosphere beforehand since I’m going solo. I hope they will let me use my selfie stick inside.

The Complete Harry Potter UK Travel Guide For Muggles

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

Last Updated on 23rd November 2021 by Sophie Nadeau

From a rugged castle in Northumberland to the historic city of Exeter to the graveyards of Scotland’s Capital, Edinburgh, there’s no shortage of wizarding locations and inspiration throughout England and Scotland. Here’s an ultimate bucket list and your complete Harry Potter UK travel guide for muggles!

Sometimes I wish that I could just apparate myself around the world. You know? It would be so convenient, save so much time and a lot of money in the form of air travel!

Unfortunately, I was born a muggle and am still waiting for that acceptance letter to arrive! 11 years and counting to be precise. If you’re in the same boat as me (i.e. not in the boat taking you to the First Year’s feast), then Alohomora away because today I’m unlocking some of the best travel destinations for Harry Potter lovers around the UK!

The Complete Harry Potter UK Travel Guide For Muggles. Here are the very best Harry Potter destinations in England and Scotland (Exeter, London, Alnwick castle, East Devon) etc

Edinburgh, Scotland

Oxford, england, exeter, england, london, england, east devon, england, lacock & lacock abbey, south west england, alnwick castle, northumberland, england, hop on the jacobite steam train, enjoyed reading the complete harry potter uk travel guide for muggles pin it now, read it again later: .

Do you want to taste some tea in the coffee shop where JK Rowling wrote the first few chapters of Harry Potter? Have you ever wanted to wander the streets which inspired streets in the series? Or do you fancy splurging and spending a night staying in the very suite where the wizarding series was completed?

Well, you can do all this and more in Edinburgh. Wizarding highlights of this UNESCO designated literary city include a venture into the writer’s museum as well as a wander through Greyfriar’s Kirkyard (an ancient cemetery where Rowling most certainly found plenty of inspiration for the names in the magical series).

Oxford, AKA the City of Dreaming Spires, is home to one of the most historic universities in the world, as well as plenty of stunning architecture and several of the oldest museums in Europe. If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter series, then you may well recognise a fair few of the locations around the city as being the backdrop of many of the films.

Some of the very best Harry Potter inspired locations in Oxford include Christ Church College (the Dining Hall there even inspired the Hogwarts Great Hall) and the Divinity School of the Bodleian Library.

And, if you’ve not yet read the books, then you simply need to head to Blackwell’s Bookshop where you’ll find the largest single room selling books in the world!

Self-Guided Tour to the Best of Harry Potter in Oxford: here are the very best filming locations in Oxford, England (Christ Church College, Bodleian Library, etc.)

It’s little-known that JK Rowling attended Exeter University where she studied Classics and French. During her time studying, she spent a year abroad in the French Capital of Paris. (If you’re interested, then here’s a complete guide to finding Harry Potter inspiration in Paris )

During her time at Exeter, it’s almost certain that JK Rowling was inspired by the historic Devonian capital. So much so that many of the names and places probably inspired locations in the series.

For example, the tiny shopping street of Gandy Street may well have inspired Diagon Alley. Today, No. 15 Gandy Street is even home to a magically themed bar by the name of ‘Cauldron Inn’.

Elsewhere in the city, the Vaults may well have led to the creation of Gringotts Wizarding Bank, while the beautiful door of 10 Cathedral Close is likely the source of the intricate and detailed carvings on the door of the Room of Requirement.

If you’re hungry while seeking our Harry Potter destinations, then head to the Firehouse, a pub which may well have inspired the Leakey Cauldron in the series!

10 Cathedral Close, Exeter, Devon, England: the ancient door which inspired JK Rowling's 'room of requirement door' in Harry Potter

For plenty of Harry Potter filming locations, as well as a glimpse into the magical wizarding world in the form of the studios and even a few shops, you must visit the UK capital of London. From London, it’s easy to take day trips to Oxford (an hour away via train) , as well as to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour (less than an hour via train) .

Some of the best wizarding things to do in London include a visit to Leadenhall Market (the Leakey Cauldron in the films) and Millennium Bridge (Brockdale Bridge in the films). If you choose just one destination in this Harry Potter UK travel guide to visit, then I recommend a trip to London.

secret spots in London you'll love: Leadenhall Market

Many of the names mentioned in the Harry Potter series actually find their roots in East Devon, a beautiful area of England which is easily accessible from Exeter. For example, it’s thought that the quaint Devonian town of Ottery St Mary inspired the hometown of the Weasley family, Ottery St Catchpole in the books.

The market town of Chudleigh may well have inspired the Quidditch Team of the Chudley Cannons, while the seaside resort destination of Budleigh Salterton may well have been the inspiration for the name ‘Budleigh Babberton’ (former hometown of Horace Slughorn).

The Complete Harry Potter UK Travel Guide For Muggles. Here are the very best Harry Potter and wizarding locations in England and Scotland (Exeter, London, castles) etc

Located in the beautiful county of Wiltshire and not far from the city of Bath, the village of Lacock is a perfectly preserved medieval settlement characterised by its timber-framed cottages and stone structures.

But what makes Lacock perhaps so special and unique (not to mention its position in the fringes of the Cotswolds) is the lack of TV masts and satellite dishes dotted across the village.

Largely owned and operated by the National Trust, today the picturesque English Lacock has become a go-to for many a film crew, including Downton Abbey and Wolf Hall.

Of course, Lacock and its nearby Abbey have also been used to film many scenes of Harry Potter, including the village where Slughorn hides away in the 6th books and some of the Hogwarts classrooms of the first and second novels.

Lily & James Potter's House, Godric's Hollow (Private House)

If you enjoy your filming locations served with a side of history, then a visit to the historic Alnwick Castle may well be in order. Located in Northumberland, an English region well-known for its piece of Hadrian’s Wall, as well as the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were both filmed at the 11th-century Castle.

Of all the Harry Potter UK destinations, Alnwick Castle is certainly one for the culture lovers! Even if you’re short on time during your Scotland trip, you should know that it’s perfectly possible to visit the Scottish Borders and Harry Potter filming location as a day trip from Edinburgh. Book your Alnwick Castle & Scottish Borders Full-Day Tour from Edinburgh here.

Of all the magical Harry Potter experiences to have in the UK, one of the best is that of getting on the Jacobite Steam Train in Scotland, which is the train that’s used as the ‘Hogwarts Express’ in the films. The most iconic photo you can take of this train is on the Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct ij Scotland.

The university city of Durham can be found in NorthEast England and has several locations of note that avid Harry Potter fans should know about.

What films? Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: One of England’s most loved, oldest, and grand cathedrals, and a UNESCO World Heritage site to boot, Durham was featured prominently in the first two films. The famous ancient cloisters are used as the setting for the scene where Harry casts a spell to release Hedwig the owl, meanwhile, you will get to visit Harry’s classroom in Hogwarts from the ‘transfiguration’ scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione turn animals into water goblets.

What films? Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Perhaps the most immediately recognizable sights for fans of the boy wizard, the majestic 700-year-old castle was used for external shots of Hogwarts students outside of the castle, and most famously was the setting for Madam Hooch’s flying lesson in the first film, and where Harry learned the rules of Quidditch.

What films? Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005):

Already worth visiting on its own as one of the oldest and grandest libraries in Europe, the Gothic architecture of Duke Humfrey’s Library inside Oxford’s Bodleian Library leant itself perfectly to be used as the Hogwarts Library in multiple films, while the medieval Divinity School inside the Bodleian with its engrossing ceiling patterns and imperious tall windows featured as the Hogwarts Infirmary in the first movie.

Diagon Alley from the first film and entrance to the Leaky Cauldron pub for wizards.

Visit the studio to see where the movie magic was made. Visitors can view the actual sets where scenes were filmed & on the guided tour they will even reveal how some of the magical shots were filmed.

One of the most recognizable areas of London, Harry, Hermione, & Ron narrowly avoided being hit by a bus here in Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows.

Although this bridge collapsed in The Half-Blood Prince thanks to some CGI wizardry, we can assure you it is still very much here in real life.

Known as the gateway to the Highlands, the glorious rolling hills, valleys, and mountains of Glencoe featured in several of the films, notably for landscape shots for the grounds of Hogwarts, & the Steall Falls at Glen Nevis provided the backdrop for the Triwizard Tournament in the “Goblet of Fire”.

Take your seat upon the Hogwarts Express when you book a journey on the Jacobite steam engine that travels across the jaw-droppingly magnificent and instantly recognizable Glenfinnan Viaduct from the train scene in “Chamber of Secrets”.

Return to the start of a phenomenon and the birthplace of Harry. The Elephant House cafe is celebrated as the spot where J.K began writing the tales that would enrapture generations. Meanwhile, the bustling city streets and gothic architecture of Edinborough provided plenty of inspiration for the (at the time) aspiring writer. See if you can spot any recognizable names from the series on the headstones in Greyfriars Kirkyard and visit George Heriot’s School, the 17th-century building that is believed to have inspired Hogwarts.

The Ultimate Harry Potter Road Trip Across England

Gloucester Cathedral cloister

Sharing is caring!

To say I’m obsessed with Harry Potter is to say the least… I feel like I have to mention my obsession with every Harry Potter post I write because then you KNOW you’re getting quality Harry Potter content from a fellow fan! This Harry Potter road trip is the ULTIMATE filming location journey for every Harry Potter fan!

The Basics for Your Harry Potter Road Trip

This is a road trip and some of the places are only accessible by car. It’s possible to do some of these filming locations by train if you want to pick and choose a couple of them.

This itinerary is JAM PACKED. I’ve tried to break it up with some “rest” days. Some locations involve hiking, most of the locations require an entrance fee, and some require a parking fee ON TOP of the entrance fee. The best thing about England is how small and drive-able it is, making this a very easy road trip for the number of locations you see in a small number of days.

Gloucester Cathedral and Durham Cathedral Cloister

From arrival to departure the itinerary is 14 days, however, it can be knocked down to 12 days, but the 2 “rest” days are taken out.

ALSO, the travel times are only ESTIMATES! Depending on where your accommodation is located, the amount of traffic, or road works these travel times can vary (same with the exact mileage). Prices do NOT include the price of gas.

  • Total Itinerary: 14 days, 13 nights
  • Total Travel Time: 21 hours, 29 minutes
  • Total Mileage: 1,069 miles
  • Total Number of Harry Potter Filming Locations: 11
  • Total Cost of Entrance Fees: £154.95

If you’re not used to driving on the left side of the road, or you haven’t driven in the UK before, you might want to read about a few basic rules and learn some signs. ALSO, do yourself a favor and request to rent an AUTOMATIC car. You don’t want to get stuck with a manual (those roundabouts can be rough), especially if you’ve never driven one before.

Alnwick Castle in northumberland, England

DAY ONE – Where to Start Your Harry Potter Road Trip

To start your epic Harry Potter road trip, you’ll head to England’s most popular city, London, since I assume most of you will be flying into Heathrow or Gatwick. If you fly into Manchester, then this trip can be done starting from and ending in York.

I don’t recommend driving in London, but if you pick up your rental car from the airport, then plan on staying around the outskirts of the city. At least you won’t be driving around Westminster or Covent Garden and you can still have access to the Underground and city center.

Day 1 isn’t jam-packed. It’s the start to your vacation and your dream Harry Potter Road Trip!! If you’re coming from the US, you will more than likely have a red eye flight, mix that with a MAJOR time change and jet lag will soon catch up to you.

covent garden and the streets of London

My advice for beating jet lag? PUSH THROUGH IT. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on the flight, try to get some sleep and then stay awake all day until your usual bed time.

Don’t plan too much for today. Just pick up the rental, settle into the hotel, have some lunch and just walk around and see the city. Get yourself acclimated.

DAY TWO – London

Now you’re starting your vacay! The Harry Potter locations are spread out throughout the city and you probably won’t get to them all in one day, so I recommend picking a couple that interest you or doing a Harry Potter Walking Tour.

So what London Harry Potter locations should you visit? I think King’s Cross Station needs to be number one on that list. Once you enter the main lobby, follow the signs for platforms 9 and 10, you’ll run into Platform 9 3/4. (You can also look for the MASSIVE line of people waiting to take their picture with the luggage trolley going into the wall).

The Harry Potter store runs the photo op, however, you don’t have to pay (unless you want to buy your professionally photographed picture), just make sure you have someone with you to take a picture, because the staff won’t hold your phone or camera!!

kings cross station between platform 4 and 5, photo op outside harry potter store

If you want the REAL filming location for platform 9 3/4, it’s actually between platforms 4 and 5!

Leadenhall Market and Borough Market both have doors that have been featured as the entrance for the Leaky Cauldron, you’ll more than likely pass through the Westminster Underground station – used in Order of the Phoenix, Piccadilly Circus is like the Times Square of London and you’ll recognize it from Deathly Hallows: Part 1, or you can walk across the Millennium Bridge – destroyed by the death eaters in Half Blood Prince.

DAY THREE – Lacock

London to Lacock: 2 Hours Parking Fee: £4.50 ALL DAY, National Trust Members: Free Lacock Abbey Entrance Fee: £15.00, National Trust Members: Free

Official Site: Lacock Abbey

Welcome to your first big driving day on your Harry Potter road trip! You need to leave early! I recommend leaving around 7:30am. The village of Lacock is a very popular day trip for tour companies, so by lunch time it can feel overcrowded.

Lacock Abbey opens at 10:30am (during peak season) and is about a 10 minute walk from the parking lot. If you get there an hour before the abbey opens then you’ll be able to explore the village first.

Village of Lacock - Slughorn's hideaway house and the streets of Budleigh Babberton

You’ll recognize this village as Budleigh Babberton from Half Blood Prince and you can walk down the same streets as Dumbledore and Harry on the way to Slughorn’s hideout… which is also a house in the village used as exterior shots.

Another house you’ll want to check out is the house used as the exterior shots for Harry Potter’s parents house in the first movie.

Head on over to the abbey and go straight to the back and enter the cloisters. This is a major location for Hogwarts!!

*Eeeeeeeeek!!*

The Chapter House was the room that housed the Mirror of Erised, the Warming Room was used in the first movie as the classroom for Professor Quirrel, and the Sacristy was used as the potions class for Snape.

FUN FACT: They used the Sacristy for the first two movies, but built an identical set for Snape’s classroom to be used for the rest of the movies.

Bonus Filming Location: Lacock Abbey was used as Hogwarts in a flashback scene in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Lacock Abbey - Harry Potter filming Location

Leaving Lacock

Allow yourself 4 hours for Lacock Abbey, walking around the village, having some lunch, and *we can’t forget* taking TONS of photos!!

Once the tour bus crowds start rolling in, it’s time to head out!

Your next stop is Oxford!!

Lacock to Oxford: 1 hour, 13 minutes

Once you arrive in Oxford, you’ll have the chance to stroll the streets and get used to the area before you head out for dinner. You can always check out my One Day Oxford Itinerary for ideas on what to do when you get there!

DAY FOUR – Oxford

Christ Church Entrance Fee: £16.00 New College Entrance Fee: £8.00 Bodleian Library Entrance Fee: £9.00

Official Site: Christ Church Official Site: New College Official Site: Bodleian Library

Oxford is a beautiful university city (known for the prestigious University of Oxford) with historic roots and intricate architecture.

There’s four major locations here, including a local bar where the cast and crew would hang out.

Christ Church is one of the colleges in the University of Oxford and includes the inspiration for the Great Hall, the very first interior shot we see of Hogwarts (when the students arrive and walk up the staircase with the intricate ceiling to meet Professor McGongall), and the cloisters were used in some hallway scenes. This is the most popular college and can get VERY busy. Make sure you pre-book your timed ticket!

the divinity school - hogwarts filming locations

New College is a little less busy than Christ Church, however, always check the website because their open hours are more limited. The cloisters here were used in some hallway scenes and the courtyard has a significant role in Goblet of Fire… Malfoy gets turned into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody.

The Divinity School is the location of the infirmary and the one-on-one dance McGonagall gives Ron in front of the class before the Yule Ball in Goblet of Fire.

Directly above the Divinity School is Duke Humfrey’s Library. This area was used for all the library scenes and the restricted section scene. You can only get here on a guided tour and photography is not allowed. You will need to leave all your belongings in the locker provided.

new college and christ church harry potter filming locations

The 30 minute Bodleian Library tour includes the Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library.

End your day at the Turf Tavern where the cast and crew would hang out during filming. (Also the infamous pub where Bill Clinton “did not inhale”)

Don’t forget to check out my in depth Harry Potter Filming Locations in Oxford post!

DAY FIVE – Gloucester Cathedral

Oxford to Gloucester: 1 hour, 10 minutes Parking Fee: £4.20 up to 4 hours, £3.20 up to 3 hours Gloucester Cathedral Entrance Fee: Free, but donation appreciated (plan on £5.00)

Official Site: Gloucester Cathedral

Gloucester Cathedral is located in the city of Gloucester in county of Gloucestershire… did ya get that?

The parking lot you need to use is the Hare Lane South Car Park. You can stay up to 4 hours in this lot, there’s plenty of spaces and it’s only about a 6 minute walk to the cathedral entrance.

SAT NAV Postcode: GL1 2DA

You’ll recognize this intricate ceiling from some iconic scenes from the first two movies.

the hallways at Gloucester Cathedral, used in the Harry Potter films

The first glimpse of Gloucester Cathedral is when Percy is leading the first years to the Gryffindor dorms. They walk down the hallway to the end of the west walk where the fat lady resides.

Percy once again leads the Gryffindors back to the dorms when word gets out about the threat of a troll on the loose, this time through the Gloucester Cathedral courtyard. Harry and Ron then hide from the troll in the Lavatorium before rescuing Hermione from the girl’s bathroom.

In Chamber of Secrets, Moaning Myrtle floods one of the hallways and later on the “Chamber of Secrets has been opened…” message appears on the north side of the cloisters.

The cloisters are HUGE here, so be prepared to spend a little longer than expected. You’ll also want some time to explore the rest of the cathedral, because it’s VERY pretty.

Gloucester cathedral - harry potter road trip

I’d set aside at least 3 hours here to be on the safe side. If you are just walking around and not bothered about recreating scenes and taking a ton of pictures, then you’ll get through it in a hour or two.

Now it’s time to head to York!

Gloucester to York: 3 hours, 5 minutes

DAY SIX – York

Welcome to your base for the next six nights! York is a historic city with roots dating back to 71 AD. It’s been invaded by Romans, Vikings, Normans, Saxons…. pretty much everyone!

You’re not staying here for 6 nights because it’s a plethora of Harry Potter filming locations, but because it’s a great base for your next locations! In fact, York has only one filming location and it’s in the first movie for about 30 seconds.

York Train station bridge - Harry Potter filming location

The York train station bridge was used as the bridge in Kings Cross. Hagrid walks Harry across the bridge as they enter Kings Cross and gives Harry his ticket for the Hogwarts Express on platform 9 3/4 and then disappears before Harry can ask where the platform is.

It is also said that J.K. Rowling’s inspiration for Diagon Alley comes from The Shambles, a tiny medieval street with crooked buildings and local shops that looks like it jumped right off the pages of a Harry Potter book. There’s a ton of Harry Potter stores here and a little cafe that sells potions.

SAT NAV Postcode – York Train Station: YO24 1AB SAT NAV Postcode – The Shambles: YO1 7LX

The Shambles in York - harry potter road trip

If you’re wondering what to do in York, have no fear! I have the ULTIMATE Guide to York for you to check out! It will also give you some ideas on where to stay or where to eat.

You’re also half way through your Harry Potter road trip. *gasp*

DAY SEVEN – Malham Cove

York to Malham: 1 hour, 28 minutes Parking Fee: up to 3 hours – £2.70, up to 4 hours – £4.80 Malham Cove Entrance Fee: FREE

Malham Cove was once a massive waterfall after the Ice Age, however, today you just see the remnants of what once was. The dramatic limestone pavement overlooks Malhamdale with rolling hills and perfect views.

This beautiful area was used as a filming location in Death Hallows: Part 1. You can see the pavement and views when Harry and Hermione set up camp after Ron deserts them.

malham cove - harry potter filming location

You will need to park in the village of Malham. The Malham Chapel Gate car park will give you the easiest access to the cove.

SAT NAV Postcode: BD23 4DG

There’s about a mile walk to the base of Malham Cove and then if you want to get to the top to see the filming location, you’ll have to climb about 400 uneven steps. It’s not as bad as it sounds, but there are no railings and no places to sit on the way up.

Once you’re finished with Malham Cove, you can walk around the hills and down to Gordale Scar (said to be Tolkien’s inspiration for Helm’s Deep in Lord of the Rings) and then visit the impressive waterfall, Janet’s Foss… or head back the way you came and head back to York.

Don’t worry, you have a very relaxing day tomorrow!

DAY EIGHT – North Yorkshire Moors Railway

York to Pickering: 40 minutes Parking Fee: £5.00 ALL DAY Pickering to Goathland Peak Return Ticket: £21.50

Official Site: NYMR

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the many heritage lines in the UK running steam trains back and forth through quaint villages and beautiful countryside.

SAT NAV Postcode: YO18 7AJ

The line starts at Pickering, so that’s where you’ll want to get the train (and book your ticket for the Northbound service). You have the option to spend the whole day on the line and explore all the stations. You can even take it all the way to the coast and explore Whitby for an hour. However, if you’re only interested in Harry Potter, then you’ll want to hop off at Goathland Station.

Goathland Station - North Yorkshire Moors Railways (NYMR)

This is the location for Hogsmeade station in the first two movies! When you pull up and the bridge comes into view, you feel like you’re actually pulling up to Hogsmeade!!! (Too bad there’s no Hogwarts in the distance, yes, that was CGI too).

*cue girly scream*

The train only runs during regular season (April-October) and during the holiday season and they do have Harry Potter events occasionally pop up, so always keep updated with their website!

The timetable and price is not the same and fluctuates within the season. The price listed above is the most expensive ticket during peak season from Pickering to Goathland.

DAY NINE – Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral

York to Alnwick: 2 hours, 10 minutes Alnwick Castle Entrance Fee: £19.50  Alnwick Parking Fee: £3.00 all day Alnwick to Durham: 1 hour

Durham Cathedral Entrance Fee: Free, but HEAVILY suggested donation (plan on £5.00) Durham Parking Fee: £3.30 – 2-4 hours Durham to York: 1 hour, 23 minutes

Official Site: Alnwick Castle Official Site: Durham Cathedral

Alnwick Castle

This is where I’m going to confuse you (hopefully not!). This will be a VERY busy day, but it’s the ULTIMATE Hogwarts day trip!!

The entrance to Alnwick Castle AKA Hogwarts Castle

You will need to start your day early so you can arrive before the opening time. You’re going to drive 2 hours and 10 minutes north to Alnwick Castle.

SAT NAV Postcode: NE66 1YU

The most iconic scene filmed here is the flying lesson which eventually seals Harry’s spot on the Qudditch team! They even do broomstick lessons here! It’s definitely geared towards children, but you can take the iconic “flying on a broomstick” picture when the lesson is over! You’ll need to get there early and pick up a free timed ticket for the lesson.

Areas around the castle were also used as “after class” and “walking to class” scenes (remember when Hermione overhears Ron making fun of her after the wingardium leviosa lesson and then storms off? That was here!), and the main entrance of the castle was actually the exit towards Hagrid’s Hut.

The Alnwick Gardens are also here (separate from the castle), however, the fountain and surrounding area is spectacular and definitely worth a look (especially in the Spring) before you head out.

Alnwick Castle - Harry Potter filming location

After you’re finished at Alnwick Castle it’s time to head back down south to the small city of Durham.

Durham Cathedral

This is another iconic location for Hogwarts! (See, I told you this was the ultimate Hogwarts day!)

The city center is on the “peninsula” (formed by the river) and the parking garage is right before you enter this area. It’s a short walk up a small incline to get the the cathedral.

SAT NAV Postcode: DH1 3UJ

The cloisters and courtyard were used in multiple scenes. The famous one? In Sorcerer’s Stone, when Harry is walking with Hedwig in the snowy courtyard and releases her into the sky. And in Chamber of Secrets, Ron tries to curse Malfoy, “EAT SLUGS!”, only for his spell to backfire on him.

durham cathedral - harry potter road trip

The Chapter House (located just off the cloister) was used as Professor McGongall’s classroom. There’s quite a few scenes filmed here and around the entrance to the Chapter House. Like in Sorcerer’s Stone when Harry and Ron are running down the hallway and into the classroom because they are late, only to find McGonagall disguised as a cat, waiting for them.

Don’t forget to check out the rest of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a beautiful cathedral.

When you’re finished, it’s time to head back to York.

DAY TEN – York

This is your chill day! You’ve been non-stop the past few days, so why don’t you relax by strolling the streets of York or if you want to get some more flights in, climb to the top of the York Minster for some beautiful views of the city.

Clifford's tower and the East window in York Minster

If you want to check out another place in the area, you could take a day trip from York or check out one of the hidden gems around York .

DAY ELEVEN – Hardwick Hall

York to Hardwick Hall: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Parking Fee: £5.00 all day, National Trust members – FREE Hardwick Hall Entrance Fee: £16.00, National Trust members – FREE

Official Site: Hardwick Hall

Hardwick Hall - harry potter road trip

Time to head back to London today! But on your way there, there’s another filming location!

SAT NAV Postcode: S44 5RW

Hardwick Hall was used for all the exterior shots of Malfoy Manor. Of course, there was a little CGI magic involved by adding spires and removing the initials of Bess of Hardwick.

It wasn’t used for interior shots, but it’s definitely worth looking around since you’re here! It’s a National Trust site and one of my faves. This house is the perfect example of Elizabethan architecture and if you’re a Tudor fan too, then you’ll love it here!

Hardwick to London: 2 hours, 45 minutes

DAY TWELVE – London

Now you’re back in London, this is the chance to see some things that you missed or revisit your faves.

Taking a stroll along the River Thames from the London Eye to the Tower Bridge will take you about 40 minutes and it’s a great way to see the river banks… you’ll even pass by the Tate Modern (free rooftop view!) and the Shakespeare Globe.

Take a walk through Hyde Park, visit the world’s first Hard Rock Cafe or watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace!

sky garden observation deck

The Tower of London is a huge tourist attraction, it is steeped in history and a MUST DO for anyone visiting London for the first time! If you want great views of the city you can check out the London Eye, The Shard, or my favorite, Sky Garden -it’s FREE-!!

There’s plenty to do, so enjoy it!

You can always take an easy day trip from London if you have nothing left to see!

DAY THIRTEEN – Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter

London to Warner Bros. Studio Tour: 1 hour, 12 min (by car from city center) Entrance Fee: £49.95 Full Experience Tour (audio guide, souvenir guide): £59.90 Parking: Free Priority Parking: £10.00

Official Site: The Making of Harry Potter

Depending on where you are staying in London, it might be easier for you to take the train from London Euston to Watford Junction, just make sure you pick one of the services that will get you there in 15- 20 minutes as opposed to ones that have tons of stops in between and take an hour!

Warner Bros Studio Tour - The Making of Harry Potter

Once you get to the station, there’s an official studio shuttle that will take you there! It’s £3.00 for a roundtrip and it takes about 15 minutes! You don’t have to pre-book the shuttle tickets, just purchase it when you get on the bus! You will also have to show your ticket confirmation!

If you drive, parking is free. You can purchase priority parking for £10.00 when you book your ticket, but it’s not worth it, unless you want to be right next to the studio… walking a little bit extra isn’t going to hurt you.

SAT NAV Postcode: WD25 7LR

Make sure you purchase your studio ticket ahead of time and pick the earliest time possible! The timed entry is very regulated, but people spend HOURS here (I average 6 hours) and by afternoon it can get very overcrowded!

The studio tour is the most perfect way to end your Harry Potter road trip!

There’s hundreds of props, costumes, sets, and creatures from all the movies. I almost cried when I walked into the Great Hall… no joke.

tons of props from the Warner Bros Studio Tour

If you purchase the audio tour then you’ll get more behind the scenes tidbits from Daniel Radcliffe and the producers, it will definitely enhance your experience and if it’s your first time here, then I highly recommend it! Purchase the complete studio package and you’ll get a souvenir guide to take home with you!!

This is the ULTIMATE Harry Potter fan location! Some of my favorite highlights were hopping on the back of the Knight Bus, seeing everyone’s wands, all the behind the scenes tidbits – like the multiple cloaks used as Harry’s invisible cloak, and seeing ALL of the props – every newspaper, horcrux, chocolate frog, book, potion bottle, and golden snitch that helped the book come to life!

DAY FOURTEEN – Departure Day

This is the day to just take it easy. Grab some breakfast, finish packing, and give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport!

  • You’ll need to book 13 nights of rooms.

-2 nights in London -2 nights in Oxford -6 nights in York -3 nights in London

  • Stay at hotels that offer free parking to save some extra cash.
  • Purchase your Warner Bros. Studio ticket as soon as you know your dates! It sells out quickly!
  • ALWAYS check the cathedral’s website. Sometimes they are closed to the public or photos will not be allowed due to services.
  • Some places close for the winter season (North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Alnwick Castle…) so if you plan your Harry Potter road trip between April and October, you should be fine!
  • The busiest month is July because that’s when school’s in the UK are on their summer holiday.
  • Purchase your tickets online to save money at some of the places.
  • When visiting locations in York and Oxford – WALK! Parking is very scarce and both cities are very walkable.

Anything you guys need to know?! Leave me a comment or send me a message! Also, lemme know if you’re heading on a Harry Potter road trip, or if you’re a huge fan like me!!

Londoners surprised by Harry Potter's Aunt Marge floating in front of Tower Bridge

The hefty replica played on the comical scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where Harry Potter unintentionally casts an inflating charm on his Aunt Marge, causing her to inflate like a balloon and float away

harry potter trip in uk

  • 12:41, 30 Apr 2024
  • Updated 15:32, 30 Apr 2024

Londoners were left scratching their heads after spotting a hefty replica of Harry Potter 's Aunt Marge floating in front of Tower Bridge. The stunt was a nod to the hilarious scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where Harry unintentionally casts an inflating charm on his unpleasant relative, causing her to balloon up and float away.

The inflated Aunt Marge weighed a whopping 95kgs and had a circumference of 11.7m, appearing to hover in front of the iconic London landmark. Standing at 6.5 metres high, it took 40m3 of air to inflate the massive figure - enough to fill 140 standard party balloons.

A dedicated team of 16 people, including expert designers, artists and seamstresses, spent a total of 264 hours creating the impressive replica. The initial design and sketch process alone took a staggering 46 hours, with a further 18 hours spent painting her head and hair, and 32 hours on stitching and sewing her clothes.

The spectacle was launched to celebrate the unveiling of a new Return to Azkaban feature at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter, marking the 20th anniversary of the cinematic release of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Laura Sinclair-Lazell, the head of show experience at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, revealed: "Many fans are surprised to learn this popular scene wasn't created using CGI in the films but in fact was created by our incredibly skilled filmmakers."

Aunt Marge's iconic floating departure from Privet Drive in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is thanks to a tremendous team effort. The combined hard work of the cast, camera and lighting departments, stunt players, makeup and special effects teams resulted in the magical creation.

To portray Aunt Marge's growing size, the costume department made 38 different tweed suits in various shapes and sizes. Aunt Marge's transformation required four distinct makeup phases.

Actress Pam Ferris, beloved for her role as Mrs Trunchbull in Matilda and who played the grumpy aunt, spent over five hours in the makeup chair prepping for the scene.

The outfit involved two 50-pound bodysuits inflated via air tubes, together with expandable gloves and legs.

Ferris and her body double were equipped with a flying harness suspended on two wire rigs that could elevate, flip, and lift her, along with a separate rig for spinning her around.

This special attraction will be available from 1st May to 4th September and is included in the advance prebooked ticket price.

Laura Sinclair-Lazell expressed her excitement saying: "We're thrilled that visitors can now come to the Studio Tour and learn more of the behind-the-scenes magic from the third film in the Harry Potter series."

6 UK Movie Locations You Can Actually Visit Including Bridgerton, Harry Potter And More

harry potter trip in uk

Melissa Mason

The UK does film and television REAL good — particularly period romance. Well, as they should — they have enough majestic palaces and moody moors still intact from the ye olde times, it would be alarming if they didn’t do a bang-up job of period dramas.

They also have a wealth of history to draw from, like sexy kings (well, sexy-seeming kings) and royal courts full of drama, plus loads of remote estates that no doubt saw their share of upstairs-downstairs secret relationships and angsty courtships.

We recently made a trip to the UK specifically to tour some of its best movie locations, so we could fully immerse ourselves in our fave shows and films like Bridgerton , Pride & Prejudice , Downton Abbey , Harry Potter and Outlander .

Where was Bridgerton filmed?

Bath, somerset.

The town of Bath in southern England is one giant filming location for everyone’s favourite Netflix period romance, Bridgerton . Both seasons have heavily featured the beautifully preserved town, which has cobbled streets and Georgian architecture perfectly suited to the series.

Definitely wander around the Royal Crescent, which has featured as a backdrop in all Bridgerton seasons (including the upcoming Season Three ), and stop at No. 1 Royal Crescent , which stands in for the Featherington residence – it’s also a museum, while the interiors weren’t used in filming, they’re still impressive.

Bridgerton

The Abbey Deli in Abbey Green was Modiste dress shop – both the inside and exterior, so stop in for a snack, too.

Holburne Museum is Lady Danbury’s house, and while they’re closed until 2026, the Bath Assembly Rooms are where the chemistry-crackling ballroom scene featuring Daphne and Simon happened.

It’s not in the series, but try to stay at The Roseate Villa – a beautiful, historic home turned into a boutique hotel that just feels like somewhere The Ton would love to promenade in front of.

Where was Pride & Prejudice filmed?

Chatsworth house, derbyshire.

If you’re visiting the UK to shuffle around at movie locations, you can’t miss Chatsworth House . Even if you prefer the 1995 TV miniseries Pride & Prejudice over the (superior, don’t argue with me) film starring Keira Knightley from 2005, the house – used in the film as Pemberley, Mr Darcy’s sprawling estate, feels so perfectly ROMANTIC.

Pride and Prejudice

When you arrive, you’ll first spot the mirror-like lake with the building’s facade reflected on it, and if you go during opening hours, you can tour the interiors, which were also included in the film, like the famous sculpture scene where Elizabeth Bennett stares at a marble bust of Mr Darcy and imagines making out with it, etc.

Where was Harry Potter filmed?

Blenheim palace, oxford.

A visit to the University of Oxford (literally a whole town) is probably on your list if you’re a Harry Potter fan, since multiple locations were used there, and the famous Christchurch dining hall served as inspiration for the film. And a short drive away at Woodstock you’ll find Blenheim Palace , the home of the Churchill’s (yes, as in Winston Churchill) and also the set for Queen Charlotte , the amazing Bridgerton spin-off.

They used not just the exterior of Blenheim Palace, but loaaaads of the interiors – in fact, when we visited, they even had costumes set up in some of them, to really give you the vibes during filming. It’s a stunning building and overwhelmingly opulent, make sure you also walk all the way around to the Water Terraces, which is where they filmed the final ball. They’re just as magical in the daytime, FYI.

Also, Harry Potter fans should venture down near the bridge to the tree with the big hole in it. No, it’s not the Whomping Willow, but it was used in Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix as the setting for when Snape is bullied by James Potter and Sirius Black in a flashback.

Where was Downton Abbey filmed?

Highclere castle, newbury.

Downton Abbey fans, get pumped. This is the home of the Crawley family, and you’ll squeal when you see it IRL. Highclere Castle knows many visitors want the Downton experience, with guided tours that run regularly through the year that are themed both around the history of the castle, and its use in film and TV.

A MUST visit! (Credit: Downton Abbey)

Basically, you can get schooled on who actually lived here, and who fictionally did. The interiors are phenomenally preserved and maintained, you’ll definitely feel like you’re Lady Mary wandering the halls.

Where was Outlander filmed?

Midhope castle, scotland.

If you’re an Outlander fan, you cannot — CANNOT — miss Midhope Castle. It’s the real-life Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family estate, and trust us when we tell you it looks exactly like you stepped onto the film set.

Unlike some of the other filming locations in the UK, it’s just the exterior that they used, so you can’t actually go inside. But man, the photos you can take under the archway entrance, imagining you’re Clare and just married the hottest guy in Scotland? Big vibes.

If the sweeping views of the opening credits make your heart soar, you’ve got to drive up to Glencoe National Nature Reserve. It’s worth exploring via the various hiking paths, which you can find out more about at the helpful visitor’s centre, but if you’ve only got time to whizz by, head to the Glenfinnian Monument, where there is easy parking and a short trail that winds up to a great viewpoint for photos.

And there you have it! A bunch of lush movie locations for you to visit when you cross the pond.

Pip pip and happy travels!

Prince Harry to return to the UK in May: What to know about his trip

Harry will attend a service marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Prince Harry , the Duke of Sussex, is heading back to the United Kingdom for a cause close to his heart.

Harry, who now lives in California, will be in London on May 8 to attend a service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games , a Paralympic-style competition for wounded service members that he founded in 2014.

The visit will be the first time Harry has returned to the U.K., since February, when he flew to London to visit his father King Charles III , who had been recently diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer.

In the weeks following Harry's February visit, his sister-in-law, Kate , the Princess of Wales, announced that she too had been diagnosed with cancer. The type of cancer with which Kate was diagnosed was not disclosed publicly, though Kensington Palace did share at the time that she had started a course of preventative chemotherapy in late February.

It is not known whether Harry plans to see his father, Kate or Kate's husband Prince William while he is in the U.K.

Harry's visit in February was quick. He reportedly met with Charles for less than an hour and stayed overnight in a hotel before departing the next day from London's Heathrow Airport.

He did not see Kate or William, his older brother, with whom he has a strained relationship , during that trip.

The last time Harry and his wife Meghan , the Duchess of Sussex, were seen publicly with William and Kate and Charles was in 2022, when they attended the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The Invictus Games, which Harry will celebrate on this trip, is a major passion project for the duke, who served in the British Army for 10 years.

Harry launched the first Invictus Games in 2014 in London as an international version of the Warrior Games, an annual event organized by the U.S. Department of Defense, which the prince attended in 2013.

The games have since taken place in Orlando, Toronto, Sydney, Düsseldorf and The Hague.

Next year's Invictus Games, to be held in Canada in both Vancouver and Whistler, will be the first time winter sports are included in the Paralympic competition.

More than 500 competitors from over two dozen nations are expected to compete during the games, which will be held from Feb. 8-16, 2025.

In February, Harry and Meghan visited the Vancouver area, where they met with dozens of Invictus participants and toured the courses where those same competitors will compete next year.

Describing why he has a passion for being part of the games, Harry told ABC News' Will Reeve at the time, "I've always had a life of service, and then I get my fix being part of, being with these guys. There's no version of me coming here, watching them and not getting involved myself."

Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and The Office actor cast as Fantastic Four villain

Ralph Ineson has been cast to play Galactus, the central villain in Marvel ’s forthcoming The Fantastic Four movie.

The Leeds-born actor, 54, first rose to fame playing the “bloody good” sales representative Chris Finch in the UK sitcom The Office .

His credits since then include appearances in the Harry Potter films as dark wizard Amycus Carrow, and the role of warrior Dagmer Cleftjaw in Game of Thrones .

He joins a star-studded cast that includes The Last of Us ’s Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic, The Bear ’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman and Joseph Quinn ( Stranger Things ) as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch.

Ozark ’s Julia Garner will play Silver Surfer , while John Malkovich has also joined the film in an undisclosed role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , Ineson’s Galactus will be the film’s primary antagonist. Galactus, who was created for Marvel comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, is an intergalactic being who eats the life force of planets.

In the comic books, he appeared as a towering human-like giant, but in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer the character was portrayed as a CGI-generated cosmic cloud. This version of the villain, like the film itself, was largely poorly received.

That film, a sequel to 2005’s Fantastic Four , was produced by 20th Century Fox. The new The Fantastic Four will represent the first time the superhero team will join the interlinking Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Disney’s Marvel Studios acquired the rights to the Fantastic Four in 2019 when the company merged with Fox.

WandaVision director Matt Shakman will helm the next iteration of the superhero team on the big screen.

Last November, news leaked that Pascal was “in talks” to lead the reboot. While earlier that year, Mila Kunis was forced to shut down rumours that she had been tapped to play Sue Storm.

Fans had also favoured John Krasinski and Emily Blunt to play Reed and Sue, respectively. Krasinski had played an alternate universe version of Mr Fantastic in the MCU’s 2021 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

His version of the character, however, was killed off and Marvel subsequently insisted that Krasinski would not necessarily play the character within the main MCU timeline.

The original Fantastic Four comic books follow a group of scientists who develop superhero qualities after they are exposed to a mysterious cosmic storm.

The Fantastic Four is set to be released on 25 July 2025.

King Charles’ decision not to meet Prince Harry during his son’s UK trip this week came after a round of “difficult” negotiations, according to a royal expert.

The Duke of Sussex, 39,  returned to London  on Tuesday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Later that day, the exiled royal’s reps confirmed to The Post that Harry will not be meeting with his estranged father in London this week due to the king’s “full” schedule.

But according to royal commentator Charlotte Griffiths, the monarch’s decision may have been swayed by “certain demands” from Harry.

“There is some talk that behind the scenes, a lot of negotiating went on,” Griffiths told GB News .

“I think the reason was because Harry made certain demands about who could be in the room and who couldn’t. Although on the surface it looks like a snub, Harry made it very difficult for his father.”

When asked to elaborate on the demands, Griffiths said “other forces” could’ve influenced the king’s decision.

“Maybe other forces were driving Charles’ position on this,” she said. “William may have had a thought about how this meeting should be conducted or whether it should be conducted at all.”

“We know that Charles likes to meet Harry with Camilla in the room, which isn’t always a popular decision,” she continued.

“Harry was without his wife as well, so this was fraught with difficulty.”

The duke’s rep on Tuesday said a meeting between the estranged father and son “will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full program.”

“The duke, of course, is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon,” a spokesperson for Harry added.

The king’s busy schedule includes his weekly audience with United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as well as the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the season and previously scheduled engagements.

Harry’s trip to London marks the first time since his visit to see his estranged father  following the king’s cancer diagnosis  in February, as well as his first trip since learning of his sister-in-law Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis  in March.

On Wednesday, the father of two is expected to give a reading at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral to mark a decade since the inaugural Invictus Games took place in the capital.

Actor Damian Lewis, star of “Band of Brothers,” is set to recite the poem  “Invictus,”  by William Ernest Henley, during the service.

It appears as though Harry has been snubbed by his entire family in the UK, as  no plans have been made to see him  during his brief visit to London.

Not only that, but Harry was forced to  book a hotel room ahead of his trip , after not being offered a bed at any of the royal residences peppered across the country.
