Born from both adventure and practicality, the safari chair has transcended its 18th-century origins being lugged around the great outdoors to become a beloved icon of design. From luxurious leather to sleek modern lines, we’ve curated a collection of the best safari chairs and hunting-inspired chairs available today. Whether you're looking for a statement piece or a comfortable spot to unwind, high-quality leather or canvas options, these chairs will bring a dash of exotic allure to any space.
Historically safari chairs were thought of as portable, collapsible chairs designed for the outdoors . They were meant to provide comfortable seating in rugged environments while being easy to tote around, with lightweight frames you could take apart. Kaare Klint is usually cited as the creator of the modern safari chair, based off British military designs (like the Roorkee chair), and played an instrumental role in refining and popularizing its design. Eventually the look of the safari chair—along with its brethren, the hunting chair—evolved over time with various designers adding their own creative twists to the original.

The generations of the Safari Chair
the safari chair's journey, from kaare klint's classic to modern interpretations by elias svedberg, arne norell, and bror boije, has left an indelible mark on design history. this iconic furniture piece continues to inspire design enthusiasts worldwide..
The so-called safari chair has for a long time been an object of interest for architects and furniture designers. The lightness, the simplicity, and the clear division between the carrying and the carried have inspired different generations to their interpretations and reinterpretations.
The first modern version, the KK 47000 chair was designed back in 1933 by “the father of Danish furniture design” Kaare Klint (1888–1954). Klint transformed the historical archetype into a modern Safari chair classic that became a recurring type of furniture for decades to come. Several prominent furniture designers have since taken on the task of designing their own version of Klint´s.
Elias Svedberg (1913-1987) designed his version of the safari chair called the Triva Chair in 1944. It was launched in the range of the NK Triva Series and produced by NK Verkstäder (eng. NK´s Workshop) in Nyköping, near Stockholm.
Twenty years later upholsterer and designer Arne Norell (1917-1971) designed the Sirocco chair for his own company Norell Möbel. Sirocco proved to be a great sales success and led to the Norell brand being known even outside Europe. After 60 years the chair is still manufactured by the Norell company, today run by Arne´s daughter Marie Norell Möller.
The interior architect Bror Boije (b.1942) is one of the foremost Swedish furniture designers of the 1970s. In 1968 he made his debut with the armchair series Junker for DUX - Bra Bohag, only 26 years old. Junker was a modernization of the classic safari chair and received a very positive reception. This was followed by a long series of successful collaborations with Swedish furniture manufacturers. As a freelance designer, Boije built his brand alongside the clients', in a way that was typical of the 1970s design generation.

Kaare Klint Safari Chairs: Early & Later
I’m interested in how furniture (and tool) designs change. Typically the trajectory is toward entropy or dissolution. But sometimes it goes the other way (see Lie-Nielsen and Veritas handplanes.)
Today I was examining some of the photos of Klint’s Safari chair, which was born from the Roorkee chair of the campaign-furniture era. The above photo is one of the earliest chairs from 1933.
The legs are teak. And note the folded over and stitched leather arms. Oh and I couldn’t resist noting that the screws are clocked.
Later chairs were mahogany or “smoked” ash, according to Harkaer. “Smoking” involves coloring the ash with ammonia steam.
The chair below is a 1953 version in smoked ash with a canvas seat. Note we now have the familiar non-stitched arms. I much prefer the stitched arms. They sag a lot less over time.
Other interesting details from the monograph:
- The seat coverings were available in leather, undyed linen drill or canvas in brown blue or olive.
- After Klint’s death, his son designed a footstool to go with the chair.
- More than 150,000 official Safari chairs have been made since 1933.

3 thoughts on “ Kaare Klint Safari Chairs: Early & Later ”
I grew up with a chair similar in style and function to this one though all of the straight wood was turned into large, chunky, balusters. My parents picked these chairs up on the coast of Turkey in the early 1950’s as they were popular in coffee houses at that time. Seeing your blog post brought them back to my memory and now I must go dig them out of the storage facility to inspect them further. Thank you.
So these chairs didn’t have any thigh support. Was that the case for all his chairs. That must have taken a bit away from their comfort.
They also look much less substantial than a Roorkee. Obvious direct copy, just wimpier.

Design Classics #44: Safari Chair
This chair was inspired by a picture in a travel guide to Africa and has been a design classic since it first appeared in 1933.
Kaare Klint was inspired by a British Officer’s chair he had seen in a travel guide for Africa. Apparently, he particularly liked the picture in which the author of the guide and his wife were seated in similar chairs by the entrance to their tent in the Savannah.
He set about making a light and portable armchair. The result can be easily assembled and disassembled without using any tools (take that Ikea) and has often been described as the world’s first build-it-yourself furniture. Indeed, it can be rolled up into a cardboard tube and posted to its destination.
Klint’s ability to produce a chair like this however, also demonstrates a detailed knowledge of his materials as well as the human body’s ergonomic requirements. Let’s not forget, Klint was Danish and they were, and are, particularly good at giving equal importance to both form and function.
The Safari Chair was Klint’s most famous piece and he sold the first ones to one of his peers Arne Jacobsen, who liked the simple functional style. But who, despite that, also suggested adding a seat cushion.
The first chairs were made from Cuban mahogany, but Klint later decided that the light coloured ash was better suited and it is still made from ash today, using wood from Danish forests.
Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, which produces the Safari chair (following the acquisition of Rud. Rasmussen, the original manufacturers, in 2011) says producing these design classics is a big responsibility.
“The timeless design of the Safari chair appeals to generation after generation. It is essential to remain faithful to the original instructions and methods of craftsmanship which is the only way to ensure that the chair continues to be a design icon for future generations. We are conscious of the responsibility involved in producing on of Denmark’s classic pieces of furniture.”

MCM Furniture Design History: The Safari Chair's Military Roots
Here we'll go into Mid Century Mobler's MCM Pick of the Week, Kaare Klint's Safari Chair . An early example of flatpack furniture, this chair, designed in the peacetime between two world wars, has its roots in military campaigns.
The Designer
Kaare Klint is known as the father of the Danish Modern style of furniture design. Born in Copenhagen in 1888, Klint began apprenticing as a furniture builder at the age of 15. He learned technical drawing at an industrial arts school and also attended an art school, where his talent as a painter emerged. Additionally, he was exposed to architecture through the instruction of his father, a working architect.
As he began developing his own designs, Klint managed to blend three disparate elements: Danish craftsmanship, the clean lines of Modernism and the clear-eyed practicality of Functionalism. According to Danish-Furniture.com ,
While Modernism — Bauhaus — was rejecting its heritage, Klint embraced it. He believed that a thorough understanding of materials, proportions and constructions of classical furniture was the best basis for designing new. The design of Klint's pieces is always based on a relentless research — every piece must fulfill its purpose, be absolutely clarified in its construction, have proportions which correspond to those of the human body, and display materials and craftsmanship of the highest quality.
In addition to designing his own pieces, Klint founded the furniture design department at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1924, where he then influenced the next generation of Danish furniture designers.
Klint's Safari Chair, designed in 1933, was based on chairs that the world-traveling Klint had witnessed being used by Americans or Britons (accounts vary) on an African safari. Those chairs in turn were inspired by "campaign furniture," the genre of furniture used by traveling armies since at least Roman times.
Campaign furniture was designed to be easily broken down, transported and assembled on-site; thus the pieces in this genre needed to be lightweight, sturdy and easy-to-assemble using a minimum of tools. It was flatpack before Ikea, and the utter practicality and simplicity of the genre presumably captured Klint's imagination.
The chair Klint spotted and was inspired by was undoubtedly the Roorkhee chair, seen below:
Christopher Schwarz , who has researched and built versions of the Roorkhee chair extensively, writes:
The Roorkhee Chair is a seminal piece of British campaign furniture and was popular with British officers from 1898 to World War I, according to Nicholas Brawer's book on campaign furniture. Named in honor of the headquarters of the Indian Army Corps of Engineers in Roorkhee, India, the chair is lightweight at about 10 lbs., breaks down quickly and is allegedly quite comfortable.
The "seminal" part refers to the chair's influence on other important 20th Century chair designs. Schwarz wrote a second article, here , pointing out the debt owed to the Roorkhee's unknown designer by Marcel Breuer (the Wassily chair), Le Corbusier (the Basculant Chair), Wilhelm Bofinger (the Farmer's Chair) and Vico Magistretti (the Armchair 905). If you are familiar with those chairs but not the Roorkhee, let's take a closer look at it.
Here are photos of a vintage version of the Roorkhee chair in both its flatpacked and assembled state. (These photographs are from the Nicholas Brawer book Schwarz referenced above, which is sadly now out-of-print.)
The ingenuity of the design lies not only in its ease-of-assembly, but in how the weight of the sitter plays a role in the structure. With the seat fabric slung between front and rear crossbars, placing weight on it pulls the crossbars towards each other, which in turn bear on the legs; this has the effect of tightening the side rails in their mortises. The very act of sitting in the chair reinforces its structure.
Klint's Safari Chair is functionally identical to the Roorkhee, with one addition (perhaps): Assuming Brawer's photo above is of the original design of a Roorkhee, that chair lacks any lateral stiffening, which Klint has provided via buckled belts at the front and rear.
I say "perhaps" Klint added this functionality because other photos I've seen of (presumably) original Roorkhee chairs are too small and dark to make out any such belts, so I can't say for certain they weren't already there. I have seen photos of modern-day Roorkhee variants that do feature the belts, but it is unclear who is borrowing from whom, as Klint designed the Safari in 1933.
Following his Functionalist/Modernist principles, Klint cleaned up the design of the Safari's legs as compared to the Roorkhee, stripping them of unnecessary ornamentation, and tripled the amount of screws securing the armrest straps to the legs. For the sake of ergonomics he's added a seat cushion and angled the seat by raising the height of the front crossbar.
Incredibly, after eight decades this chair is still in production. Here's manufacturer Carl Hansen giving you a closer look at some of the components and construction:
It is easy to tell, even in photographs, new versions of the Safari Chair from vintage versions: The leather armrests will have stretched over the decades on the vintage models, whereas the new ones will be taut.
You'll note that the new, beige Safari chair in the photo above appears to have a vertical seatback. That's because the seatback is only attached via two pins at the top of the legs (visible in the red leather chair, above right) and can pivot along the sagittal axis. This not only uses less hardware than a conventionally-mounted seatback, but confers greater comfort to the user.
I am glad that we know Kaare Klint's name and sorry that we do not know the name of the Roorkhee's designer.

Thank you Rain. This is a really interesting and informative read. I'm fascinated with these chairs. The simplicity and thoughtfulness of the design, the understanding of engineering dynamics, and utility! I've been working on some outdoor furniture recently and observed it over a summer and noticed how much the ground conditions affect the frames. I suspect they would be enough flexibility and rotation in components for the Klimt Safari chair to settle onto uneven ground, gently racking and accommodating the ground condition. Then resetting and settling under load when moved. A certain form of furniture agility responsive to site and sitter.
Please continue this series, I am getting a lot out of it.
Great write up. Do you think in the original chair, the round wood cross bars that go through the pockets in the canvas could be removed and then you basically rolled up the chair in the canvas with all the wood legs and braces inside?
Yep, check this out. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/84853

Kaare Klint was renowned as a furniture designer, educator, and visionary, and today, he is recognized as the father of modern Danish design. Klint designed icons like the 1914 Faaborg Chair and the 1933 Safari Chair, as well as the design for the reception room of the Danish Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. Klint insisted on clear, logical design, clean lines, the best materials, and superb craftsmanship. His influence on future generations of designers and architects is still evident to this day.

Imagine great adventures in this iconic design
Kaare Klint’s KK47000 Safari Chair is a refinement of the chairs brought on an African safari by an American cinematographer and his wife. Klint noticed them in the couple’s photos. They were most likely based on Indian Roorkhee Chairs used by the British military – possibly the first examples of self-assembled furniture. The original featured glueless joints, tool-free assembly, and an intelligent construction that caused the joints to tighten when the chair was occupied, enhancing strength and stability. Klint focused on simplifying, clarifying and refining the lounge chair’s composition, exhibiting his final Safari Chair design in 1933 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition. While inspired by its British predecessor, Klint’s sophisticated, lightweight chair is defined by his signature systematic approach, fine craftsmanship, well-conceived proportions, and remarkable material effects.

Great chair
I bought 2 of these and the shipping was fast and they were well packed without excessive materials :) assembly is super easy and the chairs look beautiful. They are pretty comfortable and I assume overtime, as the leather wears in, they will be even more so. Very cozy if you put your feet up on the coffee table so I see why they make a matching ottoman ;p The only negative for me is that the metal studs holding the seat bottom on don’t have some kind of “nut” to lock the two pieces securely inplace. The middle studd on both chairs keeps detaching from the leather. Not a big deal since the other 3 plus the weight of a person are enough to be sturdy but just a bit annoying. I hope in the future there are replacement leather slings in different colors so you can swap them out if you want :)
Simple elegance
Although I love the look of this chair, it is a bit uncomfortable right behind your knees. At first I was a bit disappointed because the color was so much darker than any of the pictures (more of a dark cognac) but it's still a great looking chair. I'm going to pair it with a Lawu stump stool as soon as they're back in stock to really make it pop.
The Citizenry
Hi Paula, Thank you for your honest feedback — we’re so sorry to hear that you didn’t find this chair as comfy as you’d hoped! While we appreciate aesthetics as much as anyone else, we would never sacrifice form for function. So we’re sending your note along to our Production Team to check this latest batch of chairs to ensure they meet our high standards for both. I am glad to hear that you have been in contact with our Client Experience team regarding the construction of the chair, hopefully we were able to help make this beauty more comfortable with some minor adjustments. Thank you again for your feedback. Hopefully we’re able to prove our commitment to quality, excellence, and craftsmanship to you down the road! Sincerely, The Citizenry Team
Beautiful chair!
This chair is gorgeous! Looks great in my decor! It’s super comfy and has such a simple but amazing look!
Accurate as photographed
The picture is accurate. I agree with other comments that the chair under bar under the legs is not comfortable. This is not a chair for a guest to watch a film in, if you want them to stay. HOWEVER, the ottoman alleviates the pressure point on the chair. Every thing arrived slightly spotty or stained, but given its a very soft, it’s going to get worn. I’d take a photo if that was an option (if it is, I cannot find it). Also, the ottoman should match the chair’s wood styling. The ottoman has rounded ends. The chair’s wood is squared. Customer service on a minor delivery delay was excellent.

The generations of the Safari Chair The safari chair's journey, from Kaare Klint's classic to modern interpretations by Elias Svedberg, Arne Norell, and Bror Boije, has left an indelible mark on design history. This iconic furniture piece continues to inspire design enthusiasts worldwide. The so-called safari chair has for a long time been an object of interest for architects and ...
Today I was examining some of the photos of Klint's Safari chair, which was born from the Roorkee chair of the campaign-furniture era. The above photo is one of the earliest chairs from 1933. The legs are teak. And note the folded over and stitched leather arms. Oh and I couldn't resist noting that the screws are clocked.

Design Classics #44: Safari Chair. This chair was inspired by a picture in a travel guide to Africa and has been a design classic since it first appeared in 1933. Kaare Klint was inspired by a British Officer's chair he had seen in a travel guide for Africa. Apparently, he particularly liked the picture in which the author of the guide and ...
THE CHAIR Klint's Safari chair (produced by Carl Hansen & Son) draws inspiration from the Roorkhee chair - a 19th-century British military officer's chair - that Klint saw a photograph of in an African travel guide. The Safari chair is light and functional and, when bought from Carl Hansen & Son, is shipped disassembled in a small cardboard box.
Imagine great adventures in this iconic design. Kaare Klint's KK47000 Safari Chair is a refinement of the chairs brought on an African safari by an American cinematographer and his wife. Klint noticed them in the couple's photos. They were most likely based on Indian Roorkhee Chairs used by the British military - possibly the first ...
