The Hakuna Matata

Can accommodate up to 49 passengers and with her single level deck and large bar area she has plenty of room for serving food, drinks and socializing.

She is also equipped with a full head that can also be used as a dressing room.

The brand new Motunui

Can also accommodate up to 49 passengers and her single level deck includes an extra large 12′ bar and food area, with a beer kegerator with plenty of room for serving food, drinks and socializing.  She includes a premium bluetooth sound system, adjustable various floor plan configurations (including removable tables) and bench/lounge areas.

Her open deck is nearly entirely protected under cover and is equipped with 2 restrooms on the main deck that can also be used as a dressing room.

Cal & Marty Landau, both Pennsylvania natives, are passionate, sea-loving sailors, as well as licensed, experienced captains - and have been living in the West Palm area for over 15 years.

PRACTICALITIES

Please review this section carefully before your charter. .

• Safety First Every passenger who comes aboard is expected to follow all safety guidelines and instructions presented during the orientation to Carpe Vita, and also to listen to the captain's orders on all matters of personal safety. All passengers are required to sign a liability waiver, which includes agreeing to adhere to safe codes of conduct while cruising. For our and your protection, we have a zero tolerance policy regarding all illegal substances and firearms.
• Food & Drink All cruises include water, ice and snacks (with the exception of the cooking-class cruise). Beyond this - we encourage all passengers to bring their own food and drink with them. We are happy to provide suggestions of our favorite local restaurants. We also supply dishes, glasses, flatware, stemware, corkscrews, bottle-openers, etc. If you wish to have your cruise catered, we are happy to put you in contact with some very talented local chefs.
• Pick-up & Drop-off We offer pick-up and drop-off at the Sailfish Marina or at the West Palm Beach City Docks. Earliest possible pick-up: 7am; Latest possible drop-off: sunset.
• Weather Here in sunny Florida, the weather is generally on our side - however, good sailing conditions are subject to climate fluctuations, and the weathermen (believe it or not) are not always right. If, on the day of the charter, the captain decides that the weather creates unsafe conditions for cruising, we will notify you two hours in advance of departure. In the case of inclement weather, we are happy to work with you to reschedule.
• Payments A credit card is required to hold the reservation. Payment is collected following the completion of your cruise. Cash payment is preferred. We also accept major credit cards. Gratuities are greatly appreciated.
• Punctuality Passengers must arrive 10 minutes in advance of their scheduled departure time. Lateness beyond 15 minutes after the scheduled departure time will be treated as a no-show. No-shows will be charged 50% of the charter fee. If you encounter unforeseen circumstances that make it impossible to arrive on time, we need you to contact us as early as possible to modify pick-up plans.
• Bathroom Facilities Onboard Below deck, we have an electrical flushing toilet for guests in ‘the head’ (sailor-speak for bathroom). It is imperative that you follow all instructions for proper use.
• Cancellation Cancellation Policy: Cancellation within 24-hours of reservation will be counted as a no-show and will be charged 50% of the charter fee. If we need to cancel the reservation due to unforeseen mechanical issues or illness of the Captain and Crew, all fees are refundable.
• Clothing Dress in layers and be prepared for wind. Even on warm and sunny days, winds can be strong out on the water. Bring appropriate clothing to ensure your own comfort. We do supply blankets and pillows for snuggling up.
• Motion Sickness Worried about getting seasick? Generally, staring at the horizon will take care of most motion sickness, but just in case - we have a natural essential oil blend that can help, and we are also happy to share with you some sailing tricks (acupressure points, breathing techniques, positioning on the deck, etc.) Dramamine and electrolytes are also available.
• Wildlife Stingrays, dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, flying fish, cormorant, pelicans, and many other animals are often spotted during our cruises...however, we cannot guarantee sightings. Having said that, we always keep a watchful eye on the water's surface, and we will point out all of our aquatic and aerian friends when we see them.
• Children We are delighted to welcome well-behaved kids over the age of 9.
• Miami & Lauderdale Though we are based in West Palm, with enough advance notice we can organize to offer our charters in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas as well. We aim to be flexible. Just give us a call and share your plans. We'll do what we can.

Beyond the vast windows of Palm Beach’s iconic Breakers resort , the ocean sparkled as women in designer florals paraded under the lobby’s vaulted, hand-frescoed ceilings. They were headed to network with Martha Stewart and Tommy Hilfiger and swap Hermès and Gucci purses for charity at a $600-per-ticket “Old Bags” luncheon.

Sylvia isn’t the only one who thinks that. Palm Beach doesn’t like change, and that’s no doubt why Thomas Keller, who recently purchased the beloved bistro Ta-boo, which closed after 82 years on Worth Avenue, has decided to leave the name and signage when he reopens it next season. Things remain much as they were when socialite C.Z. Guest was photographed at her seaside pool by Slim Aarons (whom Sylvia admits to being obsessed with), and men still sport blazers and bright-hued pants as they dine at restaurants with lush gardens like Bice Ristorante and Renato’s .

In West Palm’s historic El Cid neighborhood, retail shops are popping up and historic Mediterranean houses have doubled in price since the start of the pandemic, but still cost a fraction of those on the ocean side.

“The houses have a similar feel to some on the island,” says Lisa Wilkinson , executive director of luxury sales for Douglas Elliman Palm Beach. She shares that a four-bedroom historic Mediterranean jewel box that was priced at just over $3 million at the beginning of the pandemic is now trading for $6.4 million.

On the relatively undeveloped north end of West Palm, major change is coming as well: A new condo tower, Olara, will house a restaurant from José Andrés and units starting at $2.5 million; the Cipriani family is opening a Mr. C hotel; and an entirely new 40-acre mini-city, Nora , will be built from the ground up, including a hotel with a restaurant, plus a rooftop pool concept from Richard Born and Sean MacPherson (The Chelsea, The Bowery).

Ned Grace, one of the developers who conceived Nora, feels the hotel (tentatively called The Nora) will be a much-needed addition. “We are about $500 per night, two minutes from Palm Beach, and it will be super high quality in a place that hasn’t necessarily seen that yet,” he maintained.  “It will be the Chateau Marmont of West Palm.”

McPherson recalls that when he attended Santa Monica High School, Venice was still rough around the edges. “Real estate people used to call it Marina del Rey adjacent, so people made T-shirts that said, ‘Venice is not Marina del Rey.’ Well, West Palm Beach is not Palm Beach.”

Where to Stay in Palm Beach and West Palm

In the past decade, the number of visitors to the Palm Beach area has more than doubled, reaching nearly 10 million in 2023, according to tourist organization Discover the Palm Beaches.

“We do expect Palm Royale will generate a ‘set-jetting’ bump in interest from a whole new audience,” says CEO and president Milton Segarra.

Palm Beach island — whose famous residents include Rod Stewart, billionaire Nelson Peltz (whose daughter Nicola Peltz married Brooklyn Beckham at his posh estate) and designer Tom Ford (who’s a regular at Sant Ambroeus) — has some of the most luxurious resorts in the United States.

Eau Palm Beach Resort and & Spa: At its southern extension, the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa is a magnet, with its whimsical spa and lanai rooms that open onto the beach. In season, rooms at most of these properties can run well over $1,000 per night. (Oetker, which operates Le Bristol and the Hotel du Cap, will open the Vineta later this year in Palm Beach.)

Hilton West Palm Beach: Across from Kravis Center for the Perming Arts, the Hilton, where rates start at $300, has just completed a $25 million renovation. (Rooms available through hilton.com and booking.com .)

PGA National Resort: Farther north, in Palm Beach Gardens, PGA National Resort was renovated to the tune of $100 million, with new Serena & Lily-designed cottages added to the golf course. (Rooms available through pgaresort.com and booking.com .)

Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel: The town has also unveiled a new “midtown” with a Renaissance hotel that has a pool scene, Wet by Meat Market, to rival those in Miami. (Rooms available through marriott.com and booking.com .)

Also new in Boca Raton’s midtown are a Fiolina Pasta restaurant from D.C. chef Fabio Trabocchi, whose Washington restaurant Fiola earned a Michelin star, and branches of New York restaurants Limani and Gallaghers.

The Private Club Scene

The new guard in West Palm Beach is paying homage to the area’s tradition of private clubs, with Nora co-founder Ned Grace and partners planning a members spot. They are in talks to open it with Austin hospitality entrepreneur Larry McGuire, who owns Clarke’s in Aspen and just purchased the Aspen Chalet. Called the 1925 Club, the West Palm Beach club will have a much larger reach than the restrictive island spots, and will be open day and night for working, networking and dining.

Grace also recently opened West Palm’s Cove Club, where the initiation is $15,000, decidedly less than that of Palm Beach’s famed havens. (“That’s the price of a dinner,” scoffs a longtime local of the Cove Club’s fee; memberships at established Palm Beach clubs can hit $550,000.) Mr. C is planning a private club as well.

As renovated Sunset Lounge sits idle, leaders assure they have a plan, reopening timetable

WEST PALM BEACH — The Sunset Lounge , a 1920s-era supper club extensively restored with $16 million in taxpayer money, has sat idle for two years since its renovation, validating the complaints of some that West Palm Beach should never have purchased and rebuilt the iconic venue.

Rather than hosting famous entertainment acts and igniting the revitalization of the city's largely Black Northwest community, the empty Sunset stands — for now, at least — as a monument to government inertia, protracted legal battles and, some fear, pique.

That could change by year's end.

In March, West Palm Beach's Community Redevelopment Agency, which uses taxpayer money to revitalize distressed pockets of the city, submitted an updated management agreement to Vita Lounge, the local group of largely Black financial, entertainment and dining officials who won the bid to manage the Sunset.

F. Malcolm Cunningham, an attorney who represents Vita, said the group is reviewing the proposed management agreement and hopes to have it before the CRA's board of directors for approval as soon as May.

"The goal is to open the Sunset during the 2024 holiday season, and the operating agreement outlines conditions to be achieved for this grand opening," Cunningham said.

That would be welcome news for those eagerly awaiting the reopening of the famed facility, which hosted the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and James Brown and was the cultural hub of the Northwest before falling on hard times and closing in 2018.

Mayor Keith James has been committed to revitalizing the Northwest, a once-thriving community of middle-class Black residents that, like the Sunset, fell on hard times.

The community of small homes and narrow streets has endured economic distress and crime, but James, the first Black person to hold the office of mayor since West Palm Beach greatly expanded the powers of the office, has aggressively pursued a variety of projects to turn things around, including everything from parks, streetscaping and underground pipe work.

"I am proud of the fact that this administration has invested more in The Historic Northwest, Coleman Park and Pleasant City (over $100 million to date) than any other administration has spent in those areas in the city’s history," James said in response to questions from The Palm Beach Post about the Sunset and the Northwest.

"These investments are consistent with my vision of making West Palm Beach a community of opportunity for all."

Why the Sunset Lounge is so critical for the Historic Northwest community

The linchpin of the community's comeback is to be the Sunset. The CRA bought the building in 2015 for $2.4 million and sought community input on how it should be used in the future.

“The plans for the Sunset and the areas around it are what CRAs are all about,” then-CRA Executive Director Jon Ward said. “This will be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the neighborhood and breathe new life into an area of our city rich in history and culture.”

Over the next six years, the city would pour another $12 million into the building. Some critics, most notably prominent businessman Rodney Mayo , argued that buying and rebuilding an entertainment venue is beyond the scope of government.

Under James, frequently the subject of criticism from Mayo, the city forged ahead. Hopes soared in April 2022, when the CRA offered a tour of the lounge.

Long-time Northwest residents joined journalists and became emotional recounting the days when the Sunset was the go-to place for after-work drinks, community gatherings or a special night out to see a legendary entertainer. Construction crews were still putting the finishing touches on the building, but city officials said it would be reopened later that year or in early 2023.

More than a year later, that reopening still hasn't happened.

“An opening date has not been set as the operations agreement is still being finalized," current CRA Director Christopher Roog said.

Biggest sticking point: Who would operate and manage the Sunset Lounge in West Palm Beach?

A pair of groups submitted bids to manage the Sunset, Miami-based Mad Room and Vital Lounge.

Area Black residents, pointing to the history of the Northwest and the lounge, pushed for Vita. James, however, argued that Mad Room had the longer track record and a stronger financial foundation.

James and some City Council members, who double as the CRA's board of directors, complained that advocacy for Vita went too far, with some backers insinuating that support for Mad Room was racially and culturally insensitive.

The mayor and council members bristled at that suggestion, but Vita won the bid , sparking an emotional celebration in council chambers.

The bright lights of the Sunset, it was hoped, would be flicked on soon. That's not how it played out, however.

James wondered aloud whether Vita's backers violated city rules against lobbying during a bid process. The city's procurement official ultimately declared that Vita did violate those rules.

Then, after Vita pointed out post-bid contact between James and Mad Room officials, the procurement official disqualified Mad Room, a decision the group opposed but did not legally challenge.

Vita, however, did file a legal challenge to its disqualification. In March 2023, a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge sided with Vita , ordering the city to commence management negotiations with the group.

The CRA was ordered to pay Vita's legal fees, which it disputed, arguing that the group did not provide sufficient documentation. Back-and-forth legal filings, including a motion for contempt Vita filed in March 2023 to compel the CRA to negotiate in good faith with the group, highlight the intense legal battle Vita and the CRA have waged.

Vita says it is 'committed to reopening the Sunset Lounge'

Through it all, Cunningham said Vita is "committed to reopening the Sunset Lounge. Vita has the experience, resources and desire" to fulfill the objectives it laid out when it first responded to the CRA's request for proposal to manage the lounge.

"Given a chance, Vita can achieve these objectives," Cunningham said. "The CRA should show the same commitment."

While Cunningham said Vita is committed to reaching agreement with the CRA, many have wondered if too much damage has been done to the relationship between the group and the city.

James' reaction to news that Cunningham would be the keynote speaker during a Black Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beach County awards dinner in February highlighted those worries. When James learned that a city employee had purchased tables in support of the dinner — and that Cunningham was to be keynote speaker — he ordered his staff to rescind the purchase .

"The city will not support any event at which he is the keynote speaker," James wrote in an email to the city employee.

Asked Tuesday if personal animus has played a role in delaying the Sunset's reopening, James said "absolutely not."

He added: "First of all, I do not perceive this time as a 'delay.' It may not be happening as quickly as some would like, but this is the public sector, and there are certain processes that must be followed. Watching the sausage being made as happens in the public sector is not always pretty."

James said he not interested in quickly reopening the Sunset at the expense of due dilligence.

"I have told staff to get it right and not be rushed," he said. "I remind them repeatedly that we only get one shot to make a good first impression. I am working to ensure that the first impression of the renovated Sunset Lounge will be unforgettable. I am confident we will get there."
