Chateau Tour Canon

Chateau Tour Canon

Undoubtedly the most well-known fine wine region on the planet, the French wine region of Bordeaux spans 120,000 hectares of vineyard and is demarcated by the Gironde Estuary and its two main tributaries, the Garonne and the Dordogne. The region is divided into the Left Bank, for vineyards located on the left bank of the Garonne River, and the Right Bank, for vineyards on the right bank of the Dordogne. Famous Left Bank appellations such as Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe and Margaux are well-known for their quality, but value is also found in Haut-Medoc and Moulis. The Right Bank is well known for Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, while the upcoming regions of Lalande-de-Pomerol and Cotes de Bordeaux Castillon should not be overlooked. Close to the city Sauternes and Barsac make some of the world's best sweet wines, while the appellations of Pessac-Leognan and Graves do a fine line in rich reds and full-bodied whites. Red Bordeaux wines are made from a blend of grapes, and the permitted varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and, less commonly, Malbec and Carmenere. Very broadly speaking, Right Bank wines will have a predominance of Merlot, while Left Bank wines will rely on Cabernet Sauvignon as the primary variety in a blend. White wines, both dry and sweet, are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux Red Blend

Red Bordeaux wines are most often made from a blend of grapes, officially Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere. The term is now used across the world to emulate the style of the famous blended wines of Bordeaux, and will be made in the same style in the majority of examples. When very broadly referring to Bordeaux wines, Left Bank wines will have a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, while Right Bank wines use Merlot as the dominant partner in the blend.

Fruity and Juicy with a Beautiful Balance!

2017 was not the vintage of the century but a lot of very good wine was made. A late April frost damaged many vineyards but those who survived with rewarded by a dry but not too hot July and August. Consequently, the grapes ripened correctly but the wines have a degree less alcohol and more freshness, which is no bad thing, compared to the vintages either side of this one.

  • 95 % Merlot – 5% Cabernet Franc

STORY BEHIND THIS WINE

Canon-Fronsac is a sub section of the Fronsac appellation, the best part or the ‘classico’ section as the Italians would say. The soils of Fronsac and Canon Fronsac are essentially limestone and clay-over-limestone on the plateaus and hillsides, with areas of siliceous – sandy – clay at the foot of the slopes. The region is a bit of a hidden gem, unfairly overlooked in the rush to buy the classified wines of the Médoc and Saint-Émilion. Chateau Canon has almost 9ha of vines with an average age of 40 years, 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and is aged 50% in barrels and 50% in vats.

Very strong on the nose, smelling of overripe fruit; you can feel the 14% alcohol. On the palate it is much more balanced, but still a powerful wine, with significant grip, notes of dark fruit, leather, maybe a touch of tobacco, and generally a bit wild. Can tolerate very strong flavours of food. Chargrilled meat? Sure! Salt and vinegar crisps? No problem! Overall, well worth a punt, even for old-world skeptics!

A Juicy and round Malbec with soft tannins and some interesting, slightly vegetal notes adding more freshness and complexity. Enjoyed lightly chilled with a traditional roast chicken and some Provencal style roasted vegetables!

Have not tried the Segredos 2023 bottle yet but it always hits the right note, a top Portuguese red wine. I found Darren and staff very welcoming and organised. The wine came well presented with a hand written card - nice touch 👌 they are going from strength ti strength there and nice to see a restaurant alongside the wine shop. They are a classy operation, all the best guys

Beautiful Chardonnay champagne. Excellent service from Whelehans. They go the extra mile to satisfy customers .

We really love SA cabs, like Kanonkop, Lanzerac, and Thelema. At €28 this is big let-down. Nothing of note, either on fruit, acid or tannin. Tastes like a wine that costs less than a tenner.

Description

The Intense Expression of a Charming Saint-Emilion

A First Grand Cru Classe B of Saint-Emilion , Chateau Canon joins a small circle of the greatest wines of the Right Bank of Bordeaux .

Masterfully led by the talented Nicolas Audebert, the wines of the property are now considered some of the greatest of the appellation. They are known for the elegance of their style, their precision and their depth.

A real favorite from this vintage of challenges and contrasts, the Chateau Canon 2017 rewards the mastery and technicality of the estate teams. In a blend dominated by Merlot (77%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (23%), the Chateau Canon 2017 shines with an alluring character.

Intense and beautiful, the bouquet opens with pure and crisp fruit notes, evoking blackcurrant, blueberry and cherry. Fresh herbs then appear, among them menthol notes and eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine explodes with flavors and reveals a texture that is silky and mellow, almost sensual as it unfolds with purity and delivers a delicately mineral extension with a saline touch, the fingerprint of the greatest limestone terroirs. A sensual Saint-Emilion that is simply divine.

Description.

Nicolas Audebert and his team have done it again. The 2017 Canon is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Rich and vertical in construction, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts richness and intensity in all dimensions.

The 2017 is sumptuous and layered in the glass, with superb detail and tons of sheer pedigree. In 20 years, readers will have a fabulous time tasting the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 together and debating their respective merits.

Dark plum fruit, striking Franc aromatics and the clean, focused energy of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau makes for a ravishing, exquisite wine of the highest level. In a word: breathtaking.

Critics reviews

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Layered nose with high tones of red fruit, flowers and vanilla bean, darker brambles, and incense. Very youthful fruit on the palate, which is round and full, finding notes of pencil shavings together with plush red fruit. The tannins are plentiful but ripe and soft, gently integrating into the fruit.

Drink 2027 - 2029

Tom Parker MW, JancisRobinson.com (October 2029)

Showing spectacularly, the 2017 Chateau Canon checks in as a final blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc from one of the most exceptional terroirs in the appellation. Hitting 14% alcohol (the pH is 3.66) reveals a ruby/purple hue and gorgeously sweet raspberries and cassis-like fruit interwoven with notes of spring flowers, rose petals, white chocolate, and spice.

While it doesn’t have the massive opulence of the 2015 and 2016, it’s more classically styled and flawlessly balanced, with a terrific sense of minerality, ultra-fine tannins, and a brilliant finish. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, which will evolve gracefully for 30-40 years.

Hats off to Nicolas Audebert and the team of Thomas Duclos for one of the vintage wines!

About this WINE

Chateau Canon

Located in the centre of the St.Emilion appellation, to the south-west of St-Emilion town, Canon has 18 hectares of vineyards split between the limestone plateau and the clay/loam côtes. They are planted with 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. Vinification is traditional: up to 20 days in temperature-controlled wooden vats followed by 18 months' maturation in oak barrels (70% new).

This wine needs cellaring to show at its best and mature Canon reeks of the soft, buttery Merlot grape as only the very top St-Emilions and Pomerols can. It is classified as a 1er Grand Cru Classé (B) .

St Émilion

St Émilion is one of Bordeaux's largest producing appellations, producing more wine than Listrac , Moulis , St Estèphe , Pauillac , St Julien and Margaux put together. St Emilion has been producing wine for longer than the Médoc  but its lack of accessibility to Bordeaux's port and market-restricted exports to mainland Europe meant the region initially did not enjoy the commercial success that funded the great châteaux of the Left Bank.

St Émilion itself is the prettiest of Bordeaux's wine towns, perched on top of the steep limestone slopes upon which many of the region's finest vineyards are situated. However, more than half of the appellation's vineyards lie on the plain between the town and the Dordogne River on sandy, alluvial soils with a sprinkling of gravel.

Further diversity is added by a small, complex gravel bed to the north-east of the region on the border with Pomerol .  Atypically for St Émilion, this allows Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon to prosper and defines the personality of the great wines such as Ch. Cheval Blanc .

In the early 1990s there was an explosion of experimentation and evolution, leading to the rise of the garagistes , producers of deeply-concentrated wines made in very small quantities and offered at high prices.  The appellation is also surrounded by four satellite appellations, Montagne , Lussac , Puisseguin and St. Georges , which enjoy a family similarity but not the complexity of the best wines.

St Émilion was first officially classified in 1954, and is the most meritocratic classification system in Bordeaux, as it is regularly amended. The most recent revision of the classification was in 2012

Merlot

In St.Emilion and Pomerol it withstands the moist clay rich soils far better than Cabernet grapes, and at it best produces opulently rich, plummy clarets with succulent fruitcake-like nuances. Le Pin , Pétrus and Clinet are examples of hedonistically rich Merlot wines at their very best. It also plays a key supporting role in filling out the middle palate of the Cabernet-dominated wines of the Médoc and Graves .

Merlot is now grown in virtually all wine growing countries and is particularly successful in California , Chile and Northern Italy .

There have been huge improvements and investment here recently in the vineyard (which is planted 75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc) and chai by former manager John Kolasa and owners Chanel. The Chateau itself has recently enjoyed a substantial make-over. This is a great property that made fabulous wines in the past but dipped in form during the 1990's until the new regime took over. It is now right back up there as one of the very best of all the Saint Emilion Chateaux. New director Nicolas Audebert came in from Krug via South America and had an amazing start to his career at Canon, conjuring up the near-perfect 2015 vintage and an outstanding 2016. One of the hottest properties in Bordeaux right now thanks to fantastic quality and reasonable en primeur pricing.

Tasting Notes

Nicolas Audebert and his team have done it again. The 2017 Canon is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Rich and vertical in construction, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts richness and intensity in all of its dimensions. In the glass, the 2017 is sumptuous and layered, with superb detail and tons of sheer pedigree. In 20 years, readers will have a fabulous time tasting the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 together and debating their respective merits. Dark plum fruit, striking Franc aromatics and the clean, focused energy of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau make for a ravishing, exquisite wine of the highest level. In a word: breathtaking. 2027 - 2057

The 2017 Canon is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with showy notions of rose oil, Indian spices, and cedar chest, over a core of juicy black plums and black cherries, with a waft of black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with bright, expressive black fruits, supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and fragrant.

The 2017 Canon was bottled on 15 May, 2019. This needs time to settle in the glass, the oak rather vocal at this early stage and overshadowing the blackberry and briary aromas. It only takes a couple of minutes for this Saint-Émilion to settle and reveal more limestone-infused fruit that really shows its terroir. The palate is very well defined with crunchy black fruit. I appreciate the chalky texture and freshness of this Canon, almost brittle, with blackberry and brine-like notes on the finish. Whilst not up there with the superlative 2016, the follow-up is still very fine. Note that over multiple tasting this Canon improved between September and December. Drink 2022-2045.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Layered nose with both the high tones of red fruit, flowers and vanilla bean together with darker brambles and incense. Very youthful fruit on the palate, which is round and full, finding notes of pencil shavings together with plush red fruit. The tannins are plentiful but ripe and soft, gently integrating into the fruit. Drink 2027 – 2029

Extremely perfumed with blackcurrants, flowers, gunmetal, gunpowder and blackberries. Full-bodied, tight and reserved. The tannins are so tightly knit and just run through the center. Needs at least three or four years to open. A blend of 77% merlot and 23% cabernet franc. Better after 2023.

Another successful year for Canon; not as voluptuous as in 2016 or 2015, but it has a wonderful salinity and a crisp, fresh curl to the fruit. They aim for crystalline flavours, vibrant fruit and a sense of forward motion, and for me it has that again this year. The flavours of blueberries, blackberries and soft, smoky almonds are drawn out through the palate, and by the time it has finished you are ready to go again. It has an austerity that is overridden by the juice, not quite overriding the vintage, but it's a delicious wine that again showcases the beauty of limestone. 50% new oak. Thomas Duclot is consultant here, and it really is a great year for the estates that he works with. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040

Pretty dark crimson. Lightly toasty nose with some floral notes – pretty ! Not forced but with some rigour. There’s a little note of sweet oak here but it should dissipate. Good balance. A more serious, complete 2017 than many. Drink 2025-2035

Deep crimson. Sweet dark plums and a touch of vanilla. Lovely pure black fruit that sings, if quietly for now. Silky and elegant. Refined and just slides over the palate to a very long finish. Subtle beauty. Drink 2022-2032

Tasted as part of a Canon vertical. Bright ruby red colour. The nose is cool, fine and crunchy with fresh cherry and hedgerow fruits. Subtle toasted spices from oak come through in tandem with graphite and pencil shavings. The palate Is vibrant and fine, with bright acidity accompanying juicy red fruits. This moreish, supple Canon is forward and extremely moreish, laced with savoury complexity. The tannins remain fine grained and subtle, a gentle structure to subtly prop up the floral and intense fruit core. Long finish.

The nose is sweet with brooding black fruits the palate has the fleshy richness of ripe black cherries and cassis. Bramble underpins and balances slightly lighter at the back with ripe sweet black fruits giving richness and depth on the finish. 2024-33

Lovely and relaxed on the nose, with oak and fruit in harmony, this is a good wine, but it is slightly spoilt by a green edge on the finish and overly austere tannins. I would like it to be so much more refreshing and silky but the attack of dryness and grainy tannins rather shuts it all down. Given the reputation of this Château I am confident that it will even out, but this will always be a wine with a bitter edge.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Canon bursts from the glass with expressive notions of baked black cherries, kirsch, plum preserves and black raspberries plus hints of red roses, Ceylon tea, black olives and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully elegant and refined, with a soft, finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend is 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and it was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. 2021 - 2045

The 2017 Canon was picked 4 to 21 September and 22 to 27 September for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc at 42hl/ha and matured in 56% new oak. There is 14.0° alcohol this year and the pH comes in at 3.66. This takes a little time to open, eventually revealing blackberry, briary, crushed stone and light iris scents. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and good backbone. Strangely, it reminds me a little of modern-day Figeac, that Cabernet component smaller here but very expressive with touches of graphite and flint towards the linear but beguilingly fresh finish. I like the manner in which the limestone shines through the wine here, something noticeable in recent vintages. Whilst not the sensational 2015 or 2016, it is a damn fine Saint-Émilion that will settle at the top of my banded score. Drink 2022-2045.

This is very focused and fresh with limestone and crushed-stone character. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a salty finish. Shows lots of minerality already. Umami licorice undertones.

The deep purple-black colored 2017 Canon offers-up intense notes of crushed blackberries, black cherries and warm cassis with touches of fertile loam, yeast extract, beef drippings and iron ore plus a waft of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with great freshness and firm, rounded tannins, it's very earthy in the mouth, finishing long and mineral-laced. A very serious wine, it is also fun, bright and vivacious and should age impressively.

No frost here on the plateau of Saint Emilion so the yield was a healthy 42 hl/ha. The encepagement this year will be 77% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc with 18 months in 56% new oak. The harvest took place from September 4th to 21st. A deep ruby colour, with enticing black plum and morello cherry supported by subtle fresh vanilla and a light smokiness. Most impressive on the palate is the cashmere texture from impossibly refined and supple tannins. The fruit glides over this velvet support, with glistening ripe cherries and fresh blackcurrants. Acidity cuts through the ripe fruits and adds a savouriness to the sweet smoke from measured use of new oak. Elegant, poised and precise, with a lingering finish.
