Killer Mike & Jeezy], the MC landed “ the biggest hit of his solo career ”—according to Rolling Stone —in the form of “All Night.” The smash single soundtracked a high-profile Apple Animoji commercial, blew up radio, and clocked 40 million streams within a year. The Dirty South wasn't always known for rap. When Outkast first emerged in 1994, the southern hip hop scene was largely discounted in the music world. The duo's Atlanta upbringing felt like a liability.

"We come from a time when it wasn’t cool to be from Atlanta," the rapper known as Big Boi tells me. They weren't cowed. The title of Outkast's debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, explicitly nodded to geography. The animosity boiled over at the 1995 Source Awards, when Outkast won for best new rap group and drew overt boos from denizens of the East Coast rap scene. In a tense acceptance speech, André 3000 declared, "The South got something to say."

The proclamation proved true when the group's intergalactic ATLiens record arrived a year later, packed with little morsels of Southern pride ("If you like fish and grits and all that pimp shit..." goes the title track refrain). "We had to make them respect us," says Big Boi. "When we won best new artist and we got booed, that fueled the fire. That just made us go harder, know what I mean? Since then, it's got to be elite street jedi rap shit. It’s got to be the cream of the crop."

New Mic Jack Video Featuring Adam Levine Out Now!

Georgia tech students meet big boi.

It’s not your typical class on a campus known for engineers and scientists.

“The name of the course is Engaging the Lyrics of Outkast and Trap Music to Explore Politics of Social Justice,” explains Dr. Joycelyn Wilson. “We turn Outkast’s lyrics into a text and we use the narratives to have a larger conversation about social justice.”

Wilson studied the music and lyrics of Outkast as part of her dissertation.

“I felt like Outkast represents innovation,” she explains.

Originally, the students were not aware the class was about Outkast. It was just billed as a “race, science, and technology” course.

Wilson says she introduces students to the lyrics first, and then the class listens to the music.

“Often we’re attracted to the sound first. Then we analyze the words.”

While much of the focus was on Outkast, Wilson and her students reviewed songs across the hip-hop spectrum from Lauryn Hill to Lil Yacthy.

Through a course like this about music, students are introduced to urban issues and that begins a conversation.

“Having a course where you have discussions about social and political issues, it’s nice to have that change,” says mechanical engineering student Ahmed Aly.

To wrap up the course, Wilson arranged for Antwan Patton, better known as Big Boi from Outkast, to visit the class and take questions from the students.

Big Boi is back in a big way—the Atlanta legend's next album, BOOMIVERSE, is due out in June. Two singles have dropped thus far, "Mic Jack" with Adam Levine and "Kill Jill," featuring longtime Dungeon Family affiliates Killer Mike and Jeezy.

Both songs confirmed what we already knew: Big Boi knows how to choose his singles. And while we enjoyed his more experimental turns, like 2015's Phantogram collaboration Big Grams, it sounds like BOOMIVERSE is a return to hip-hop and R&B.

The biggest change may be the artist's reunion with L.A. Reid, the Epic Records exec behind Outkast's early success and Big Boi's masterful first solo album, Sir Luscious Left Foot...The Son of Chico Dusty. After a seven year hiatus (Reid switched jobs), the two are back under the same label umbrella, and it sounds like they're making magic.

When Big Boi stopped by the studio, he laid out a list of surprising collaborators: DJ Dahi, Scott Storch, and lesser-known names like Eric Bellinger and Sean Douglas all contributed to the album, which the rapper recorded between Atlanta and L.A.

One thing that didn't change this time around was how Big Boi chose his singles. There are listening sessions, of course, but it's his children that really tell the rapper when he has a hit on his hands.

High energy, great sound, awesome DJ...Big Boi hasn't missed a beat! Venue was a good choice; offered Will Call, full bar and standing room with select seating around the exterior of the room. Dark with excellent stage lighting. The crowd were well behaved, age-appropriate, positive-party people.

This was my favorite show. Pretty much every Dungeon Family song I could've hoped for. Big Boi was great as always. Andre 3000. Love in Your Mouth. Big Rube. Liberation.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue To Tour With OutKast’s Big Boi In 2024

Modern New Orleans music tastemakers Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue have announced a run of 2024 tour dates featuring support from Atlanta hip-hop O.G. Big Boi of OutKast .

The run will begin in June with shows at Cary, NC’s  Koka Booth Amphitheatre (6/11), Bridgeport, CT’s Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater (6/13), Boston, MA’s  Leader Bank Pavilion (6/14), Huber Heights, OH’s Rose Music Center at The Heights (6/18), and Cleveland Heights, OH’s  Cain Park Evans Amphitheater (6/20). The June 2024 run for Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will also include a June 16th show at New York, NY’s  The Rooftop at Pier 17 featuring support from Neal Francis rather than Big Boi.

After parting ways for various other gigs in July and August, Trombone Shorty and Big Boi will reconnect on September 4th for a performance at Los Angeles, CA’s storied  Hollywood Bowl .

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will stay plenty busy until then. On February 16th, just three days after Mardi Gras, the band will embark on the first-ever Shorty Gras tour, bringing New Orleans Carnival spirit to the East Coast three-week run of performances featuring another staple New Orleans act, The Soul Rebels . Shorty Gras has become a beloved New Orleans tradition since its inaugural year in 2020, a featured event as part of the Krewe de Freret Parade in the lead-up to Mardi Gras (the Krewe de Freret Parade occurred on February 3rd, 2024). Trombone Shorty led the parade on his own signature float and concluded it with the Shorty Gras ball at Mardi Gras World featuring a who’s who of musical guests. This year, Shorty will bring this distinctly New Orleans Mardi Gras party on the road for the first time.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue Announce Summer Tour with Big Boi

Keeping busy as ever, Trombone Shorty has announced another series of appearances for 2024, this time plotting a 6-show string of headlining events with Orleans Avenue across the US. The band will be joined by legendary Outkast member Big Boi for six of these performances, while soulful singer-songwriter Neal Francis will stand in for an appearance in New York. This new run falls between New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the band’s summer festival appearances, keeping Shorty on the road for a grand total of 28 upcoming dates this year.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue’s new tour begins with a set at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, N.C. on June 11. From there, the band will head to the Northeast for engagements in Bridgeport, Conn. and Boston on June 13-14, followed by its performance alongside Neal Francis on June 16 at New York’s The Rooftop at Pier 17. The band will reunite with Big Boi for shows in Huber Heights, Ohio and Cleveland Heights, Ohio on June 18 & 20, before capping off the tour after a stint away with a booking at Los Angeles’ iconic Hollywood Bowl on September 4.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue kicked off 2024 with the third “Getting Funky in Havana” festival, a five-day cultural exchange trip to Cuba celebrating the nation’s longstanding musical connection to New Orleans. Then, this past weekend, Shorty staged his customary Shorty Gras celebration during the Krewe de Freret Parade, featuring guest stars Nelly, Dumphstafunk and fellow New Orleans funk outfit the Soul Rebels, with whom Shorty and the band will keep the party roaring with a three-week, 14-date Shorty Gras Tour across North America. Other high-profile bookings this year include Minnesota Yacht Club Festival , Bluesapalooza and the band’s highly-anticipated Treme Threauxdown 8 , kicking off its New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival performances on April 17.

Westward Bound Tour

Union Pacific's famed Big Boy No. 4014 , the world's largest operating steam locomotive, will return to the rails this summer with a scenic tour across mountain ranges and high desert vistas in four western states: Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California.

Big Boy will journey from its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming on Sunday, June 30 , en route to Roseville, California , before returning to Wyoming by the end of July. It will make numerous whistle-stops in communities along the way, with public display stops scheduled in:

• July 12-13 : Roseville, California
• July 20-21 : Ogden, Utah

Additional route details and approximate times for whistlestops will be shared closer to the tour.

During the tour, the Union Pacific Museum will host a special passenger trip. The unique experience is the annual gala fundraiser for the nonprofit organization and provides a rare opportunity to travel on this historic heritage equipment. More information on the specifics will appear at www.UPtrainTix.org when they become available.

2024 Westward Bound Tour Route

This is one of two public tours planned for Big Boy in 2024, with a second tour planned later this fall with stops in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, and Illinois, among other states. Details of the second tour will be released later this spring.

The month-long "Westward Bound" tour will honor Union Pacific's rich railroad legacy and celebrate the railroad's employees and communities it serves. For part of its journey, the Big Boy's consist will include an assortment of rail cars giving spectators a glimpse into what the locomotive looked like pulling freight in its heyday.

"The Big Boy locomotive symbolizes the pivotal role railroads played in shaping our nation's history, and the technological advances we have witnessed within our industry," said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. "We are thrilled to share this living piece of history with our employees and the public, and we love seeing the enthusiasm this locomotive generates wherever its whistle blows."

Last fall, we had anticipated including Boise, Idaho, and Portland, Oregon on the Westward Bound tour. As planning continued, we determined that the network capacity on our northern corridor could not accommodate Big Boy No. 4014 along with anticipated demand on a single track. Our goal is to share the Big Boy with as many rail fans as possible across our network, and we look forward to seeing everyone track side – 25 feet back this summer and fall.

Cary, NC--This summer, the high octane of New Orleans' Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue take center stage on a headlining tour with support from legendary Big Boi from Outkast. The run will begin in June and includes Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre on June 11th. Tickets go on sale on Friday, February 9 (10AM local).

Trombone Shorty recently teamed up with his childhood friend Sammy Cyrus for a special project named Saint Brass. It will be another busy year for the New Orleans ambassador and road warrior. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue just announced that their beloved Treme Threauxdown concert will return for its eighth year, taking place at New Orleans' Saenger Theatre on Saturday, April 27 during the first weekend of the Jazz and Heritage Festival. The list of guest stars will be revealed soon, but past shows have seen everyone from Jon Batiste, Mavis Staples, Allen Toussaint, and Dr. John to Eric Church, Usher, Joan Jett, and Gary Clark, Jr., and have also included surprise appearances by artists from Nick Jonas to Dierks Bentley to Steve Miller to Wyclef Jean.

On February 16, just three days after Mardi Gras, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will embark on the first-ever Shorty Gras tour, bringing their high-energy New Orleans party to the East Coast for a special 3-week run of performances. They’ll be joined by another New Orleans staple, The Soul Rebels. Shorty Gras has become a beloved New Orleans tradition since its inaugural year in 2020, a featured event as part of the Krewe de Freret Parade in the lead-up to Mardi Gras (the Krewe de Freret Parade is scheduled for February 3, 2024).  Trombone Shorty leads the parade on his own signature float, and concludes with the Shorty Gras ball at Mardi Gras World, featuring a who’s who of musical guests. Previous performers include Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Flo Rida, Big Freedia, Tank and the Bangas, Rebirth Brass Band. This year, Shorty will bring this distinctly New Orleans Mardi Gras party on the road for the first time.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue just returned from a five-day cultural exchange trip to Cuba, which took place from January 11-15. It marked the third edition of the “Getting Funky in Havana” festival, celebrating the New Orleans – Cuba connection through music. The highlight was a mega concert on January 13 at Club 500, where Trombone Shorty, Orleans Avenue, and Cuban legends Los Van Van and Wampi drew a record-breaking crowd of over 15,000 people, the largest in Cuba in the last four years. Additionally, Trombone Shorty cohosted the largest U.S-Cuba jam session at Havana’s Fabrica de Arte Cubano, featuring over 30 artists from both countries. A centerpiece of the event was the collaboration with Guillermo Tomas Music Conservatory, with Trombone Shorty's Foundation donating instruments to the school through a partnership with Horns to Havana. Trombone Shorty also produced New Breed Brass Band’s debut album “Made In New Orleans” (released last April), which was led by his nephew, Jenard Andrews, and was nominated for a GRAMMY for "Best Regional Roots Music Album.”  It was also recorded at Shorty’s Buckjump studio.  Other recent highlights include performing at the MusiCares gala during 2023’s GRAMMY Awards weekend and celebrating a decade of playing the closing set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. In 2022, Shorty released “Lifted,” his most recent album, and has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Good Morning America, Today Show, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade for the past three years. He also won a GRAMMY for his work on Jon Batiste’s Album of the Year-winning “We Are.”

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls.
