The convenience of flying private became abundantly clear to fans of the hit HBO show Succession as we watched the Roys zip off to exclusive retreats and far-flung business meetings in a matter of hours. That level of ease of travel at a time when flying commercial has become fraught with long airport lines and cascades of cancellations and delays may have some travelers wondering, how much does flying on a private jet cost, really?

It costs anywhere between $2 million and upwards of $100 million to buy a new private jet, and it costs between $1,300 and $13,000 per flying hour to charter a private jet, depending on the size and capacity of the airplane, according to private jet charter company Air Charter Service.

“For many, private travel is something they tried in the pandemic and a luxury they’re not willing to give up now,” global luxury travel agency consortium Virtuoso reported in a recent survey of travel advisors released in August 2023.

According to Virtuoso, now more than ever high-net-worth travelers are seeking privacy and personalization as they plan upcoming trips. “Private aviation is climbing in popularity for domestic and shorter international flights,” the luxury travel network noted.

Not surprisingly, several private jet charter companies and luxury resort and villa properties have partnered to offer travelers just that: private flight service directly to an exclusive villa or resort destination.

For instance, for $148,000 per person, you can fly on a two-week private jet itinerary hosted by Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts with stops in Greece, Egypt, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, and South Africa. The 13-day African Wonders journey takes place on the Four Seasons private jet, and guests stay at Four Seasons luxury properties globally. Four Seasons currently hosts numerous other private jet journeys each year.

How much does it cost to buy a private jet?

You could, of course, go all out and buy a private jet. Depending on the age, make, and model, private jets cost anywhere between $500,000 for an older used model, to upwards of $100 million for a state-of-the-art private jet with all the bells and whistles. Add to that how much it costs to operate and maintain the aircraft, which can be up to several million dollars per year, and we’re looking at quite the investment.

Dream quashed? Not necessarily. From private jet charter services to companies that sell individual seats on private planes, private jet travel is more accessible than you might think.

How much does it cost to charter a private jet?

According to private jet charter company Air Charter Service , you can expect to pay between between $1,300 and $13,000 per flying hour to charter a private jet , depending on the size of the aircraft. It typically costs between $1,300 and $3,000 per flying hour to charter a turboprop or smaller jet plane, which seats 4 to 6 passengers; between $4,000 and $8,000 per flying hour for a midsize jet, which typically accommodates up to 9 passengers; and between $8,600 and $13,000 per flying hour for larger private jets, which usually seat from 14 to 19 passengers. You can see how that translates into a cross-country flight below.

Beyond Air Charter Service, other companies that offer private jet charters include Air Partner , PrivateFly , and Jettly , booking platforms for on-demand private jet charters.

How much does it cost to book a seat on a semi-private jet?

Because passengers are not chartering the entire aircraft the way they would when booking a private jet, the cost to book a seat on a semi-private jet ranges from as little as $209 one-way with semi-private carrier JSX to $1,800 one-way with high-end airline Aero.

Which companies offer semi-private flights?

A growing number of companies are offering travelers the ability to book a single seat, similar to how you would on a commercial flight, on a public charter private jet flight or a semi-private jet. They include:

  • Aero: Launched in 2020, the semi-private, luxury airline Aero offers one-way flights from Dallas to Aspen starting at $1,000, one-way flights from Los Angeles to Los Cabos starting at $1,800, and one-way flights from London to Nice starting at $1,600. Prices include one checked luggage and one carry-on. Aero flies from Aspen, Colorado; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Las Vegas; L.A.; Los Cabos, Mexico; San Francisco; and Sun Valley, Idaho. It also flies between some European hubs, including London; Nice, France; and Ibiza, Spain.
  • Blade: A helicopter and semi-private flight service, Blade mainly operates flights from New York City to Palm Beach and Miami, Florida; it also offers helicopter service from Manhattan to John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark International Airport. One-way flights to Palm Beach start at $1,250.
  • JSX: Formerly JetSuiteX, JSX is by far one of the most affordable options for semi-private travel , with one-way fares starting as low as $209 on 30-seat Embraer E135 planes, which includes up to two checked bags as well as snacks and drinks on board. JSX connects several California hubs, including Burbank, Concord, Los Angeles, Monterey, Orange County, Oakland, and San Diego. The airline also flies to Austin, Dallas, Denver, Gunnison/Crested Butte (Colorado), Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, Reno-Tahoe, Taos (New Mexico), and Westchester County in New York. JSX planes are outfitted with cushy leather seats and Starlink Wi-Fi.
  • Surf Air: Surf Air is a jet membership service that includes both scheduled semi-private flights (such as JSX flights) and on-demand jet service. The semi-private scheduled flights operate from Truckee, San Carlos, Santa Barbara, and Hawthorne in California, and the on-demand flights can be booked to and from hundreds of hubs all across the United States. Memberships range from $199 per month to access the inventory then pay per flight to $2,500 per month to unlock an unlimited flight plan.
  • Tradewind Aviation: The Oxford, Connecticut–based Tradewind Aviation operates on-demand and scheduled flights throughout the United States and Caribbean. Scheduled service includes flights to and from Westchester County in New York; Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts; and Newport, Rhode Island. Tradewind also flies between the Caribbean destinations of Anguilla, Antigua, San Juan, St. Bart’s, and St. Thomas. Flights run anywhere from $300 to hop between Caribbean islands to an opening rate of $395 to fly to Nantucket from Westchester. The aircraft fly out of private air terminals and flights include onboard refreshments.

There’s a private jet app for that

There are also several private jet startups that are based on a sharing economy-style model for booking private jets. One of them is XO , an app that allows passengers to book a private charter, a shared charter, or book seats on an available private flight. XO has two styles of payments, a membership fee model and a pay-as-you-go model. Memberships range from $595 per year, which allows you to skip the $395-per-flight service fee that applies to individual private flight bookings, or you can pay a $395 fee for a seat and add to that a $995 trip cost. For $995 per year, you can access the XO Reserve membership with a minimum $250,000 deposit that includes set hourly private charter pricing and no added fees.

Private jet app UberJets also helps users find and book charter aircraft. It doesn’t own or operate a fleet of aircraft and simply serves as a booking tool.

What is an empty leg deal?

An empty leg is a nonrevenue repositioning private jet flight—a private jet that has dropped passengers off on a one-way leg and would otherwise return to its home base empty. Because these are noncommissioned flights, they can often be accessed at a much lower price than a standard private jet flight as operators are happy to recuperate any of the costs and sell the flight for a deal—well, a deal for an entire private jet.

Private jet services such as Jettly and XO will often list their current empty leg deals and routes online.

What is a private jet card membership and how does it work?

A common way to access private jet service is through a private jet card membership. You pay a fee upfront—typically in the range of $100,000 to $200,000, according to Private Jet Card Comparisons , a site that allows users to compare the different programs available. Then private jet flights will be deducted from your initial deposit, typically at a set cost per hour. Hourly rates range from about $2,000 to $4,000 for a turboprop or smaller private jet up to $20,000 or more for a midsize or larger private jet that can fly longer-haul journeys.

“A jet card refers to debit card–style program that typically enables you to prepay for private jet flights at a fixed hourly rate with guaranteed availability,” Private Jet Card Comparisons explains on its site .

There are dozens of companies that sell private jet cards, including Air Charter Service, Air Partner, Airshare , Airstream Jets Inc., Alliance Aviation, Charter Flight Group, Delta Private Jets, Inc., Flexjet, International Jet, JetSuite, Jettly, Magellan Jets , Netjets, PrivateFly, Privé Jets, Quantum Jets, Unity Jets, VistaJet, and Wheels Up , among numerous others. Some companies specialize in shorter, domestic flights, while others offer access to global destinations, such as VistaJet .

For a fee of $250 , Private Jet Card Comparisons breaks down the options and what each card and program have to offer.

Beige interior of a private jet

Pricing for private jet charters depends on the size and type of aircraft—and the distance you need to fly.

The benefits of flying private

Avoid the crowds at the airport.

If you fly a private jet out of a major airport, you won’t be going through the main commercial air terminals. Most private jet operators use a designated area adjacent to a major airport for check-in, security, boarding, and disembarkation. Some have converted these areas into sleek lounge spaces for more comfortable waiting environments. But the bottom line is, you won’t be going through the same check-in procedures and security lines as everyone else at the airport—you will have a separate, more secluded area only for private fliers. (Prior to check-in, make sure to establish what the luggage restrictions are as well as those for flying with animals—they will vary depending on the size of the aircraft and by operator, though many typically have standard luggage allowances and allow pets to come along.)

Access to more destinations

Many private jet flights skip the larger, more bustling hubs opting instead to take off and land at smaller airstrips that are less congested. Those smaller airports can often get travelers even closer to their destination than a larger hub would, meaning less travel time to and from the aircraft itself. Access to destinations that don’t have regular commercial service or any service at all is another huge potential bonus of flying private.

Customized travel

When looking to book a private jet, travelers can customize the experience to their needs and wants (and budgets), including the size and style of the aircraft and the level of service. This can also translate into more work for the customer as it’s not as easy as simply going online and booking a flight—some back-and-forth communication is required between the private jet operator and the clients as they establish exactly which aircraft, flight routes, and service will be needed. The payoff is arguably worth it when you find the private flying experience that perfectly suits your desires.

The environmental impact of flying private

We’re not going to sugarcoat it. Flying private does not have a good track record when it comes to the environment. In a November 2019 report , U.K.-based nonprofit group Fellow Travellers together with economic democracy advocacy organization Common Wealth estimated that on average a private jet passenger journey within Europe emits around 7 times the greenhouse gases as the same business-class flight and around 10 times as much as an economy-class flight. Consequently, the report advocates for the rapid electrification of the private jet sector, which it notes is the segment of the air industry that is most amenable to going fully electric in the very near future.

That was confirmed by writer Elissa Garay in her AFAR article “ Electric Planes Are Coming Sooner Than You Think ,” which noted that some of the biggest gains in electric air travel include smaller two- to nine-passenger private electric planes.

Investments in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are being made by companies that include Boeing, Airbus, NASA, and Toyota, as well as startups, such as California’s Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation, Germany’s Lilium, and the U.K.’s Vertical Aerospace, Garay reports.

While the Biden administration is making a big push to reduce air emissions by focusing on a switch to more sustainable aviation fuels, environmental organizations continue to emphasize that the biggest impact in the private aviation space will ultimately be a gradual conversion to fully electric flights.

All the Ways to Fly Private, Starting at $100 Per Flight

By Debra Kamin

Private jet travel took off in a big way during the pandemic. Flying private, which has long been viewed as a swanky, sometimes out-of-reach indulgence, suddenly became much more attractive in the era of social distancing. And as a flurry of new players entered the market in response to demand, the prices, long considered sky-high, became more accessible as well.

These days, relaxing in privacy at 35,000 feet no longer requires access to your own personal G5. There are now dozens of options for travelers looking to take to the skies in seclusion, many of them with ticket prices that deliver less sticker shock than you might expect. And the fact that most services operate out of smaller airports and private terminals has become even more appealing since the start of the pandemic, increasing demand.

Air Charter Service, the world's largest private aircraft broker, saw its new clients increase 25 percent in 2021. Many of them made the leap to private because it offered a pathway to reunite with family, says Caitlin Uhlmann, CEO of the company's Chicago office. In 2022, one in four of those first-time clients went on to book again and are now repeat clients.

“Being in the industry over 12 years, I’ve never experienced the wave of new clientele and limited aircraft availability due to demand as I had in the last two years,” Uhlmann says. “It doesn’t seem that private travel will slow down in the near future.”

Learning to navigate the multitude of companies and different categories of private air travel—from fly-share services to fractional ownership—can feel overwhelming. Below is a primer on some of the ways to score a seat on a private aircraft.

Charter open marketplaces

These days, all it takes is a strong Wi-Fi connection (and a handy app or two) to get yourself into a private plane. A number of newer services are connecting fliers directly with charter operators, allowing you to browse, book, and buy within minutes.

JetASAP , a free, self-service app that defines itself as an “Airbnb for air travel,” launched in November 2020, allowing fliers to secure and book private flights directly from their smartphones. There’s a free feature to search in both the app and website, and unlimited access is available for $79.99/month or $399.99/year. Fliers are never required to pay a commission—just punch in a flight request, which includes your airport of departure and preferred flight times. Live operators respond with quotes and can answer any questions, and members get access to an exclusive list of more than 1,000 bookable daily trips.

Another newcomer to the private aviation sphere,  FlyJets  debuted in January 2020. The platform operates like a travel search engine, allowing customers to filter results via their preferred aircraft size, location, and desired departure time. An app, with features including automated scheduling, is set to debut before the end of 2022. Prices can be as much as 50 percent lower than the costs of an average charter, and booking options include full charters, seats on shared charters, and group-purchases. Travelers can even bid on flights that lack a fixed price. They can also earn rewards for flying green, with carbon offsets delivered directly to their user dashboard.

Traditional chartering services

If you want to get in the air without strings attached, but need a little more guidance in which plane to choose, charters are a great option. Charter companies work with dozens of private air operators to locate your ideal flight and manage door-to-door logistics, with no long-term commitment required. Many also offer the option to purchase a jet card, which you can load up either with a fixed number of flight hours or with money you spend like a debit card. The field is a crowded one: along with Wheels Up and Blade, there’s also Air Partner, Private Fly, and Jettly, among others.

Founded in 2019, Aero offers white-glove service on a fleet of sleek 16-seater black jets. The company flies to Aspen, Colorado; Los Cabos, Mexico; Sun Valley, Idaho ; Los Angeles (Van Nuys and LAX); San Francisco ; London ; Ibiza; and Nice, France . Flights to Switzerland are coming at the end of 2022. Tickets on most routes run $1,000 per leg.

Blade  is a popular choice for city-based travelers. It connects fliers not just with jets but also turboprops, seaplanes, and helicopters in their contracted fleet via a user-friendly app. Its Blade One planes offer seasonal service from  NYC  to  Miami , Palm Beach, and Aspen. A jaunt from NYC to Miami on BladeOne starts at $2,975 per leg. There's no membership required and fliers can purchase multipacks of flight passes on certain routes.

Founded in 2013,  Wheels Up  provides access to more than 1,500 aircraft, with a fleet that includes gold-standard planes like the King Air 350i and Citation X. Initially, its offerings were only accessible via three tiers of membership. But late last year, it rolled out the Wheels Up app, which also allows non-members to browse and book one-off flights. Wheels Up Connect memberships have a $2,995 initiation fee plus annual dues of $2,495, and rates jump up from there. Core memberships, which cost $17,500 plus $8,500 in annual dues, include guaranteed access to certain tiers of aircraft plus access to bespoke partners like Abercrombie & Kent, Hertz, Tropic Ocean Airways, and more.

Fly-sharing

Fly-share companies are the easiest on the wallet. Companies like Surf Air , and JSX enable travelers to snag a coveted seat on a private jet charter—sometimes for as little as $100 each way—sharing space with only a handful of other passengers and enjoying perks like no security lines and departure from  private terminals . Here's an in-depth  breakdown of popular fly-share operators  and what each one offers.

JSX, a semi-private carrier, offers flights on 30-seat jets, out of private terminals, starting at $249 each way. The company currently serves 18 markets including Austin, Texas ; Los Angeles ; Miami ; and Westchester County, New York. Thanks to a new partnership with United Airlines, travelers can earn United MileagePlus miles for their flights.

Wheels Up offers three tiers of membership.

Membership programs

For more frequent fliers, membership programs can be attractive. Through tiered subscription programs, you’ll pay a monthly or annual fee that unlocks access to an entire fleet of aircrafts that can then be booked on demand.

Interest in this company is skyrocketing—new client memberships are at the highest they have ever been, and sales in the first months of 2022 were up 185 percent from the same period in 2021. VistaJet’s fleet of silver and red aircraft includes corporate jets and the long-range Bombardier Global 7500, which has a bedroom and full-size kitchen. Membership options include VistaJet VJ25, a three-year private flight subscription for those who fly between 25 and 49 hours per year.

With a $100 monthly membership fee and one-way flights starting at $750,  Set Jet  is one of the most affordable private air travel options on the market. Founded in 2014, the West Coast-based company currently offers domestic routes from  Los Angeles , San Diego , Orange County, Scottsdale , Las Vegas , San Francisco , and Cabo San Lucas, with seasonal charters to Aspen and Salt Lake City . And it’s growing fast—its fleet of Bombardier aircraft will soon also be taking off from  New York , with expansions into Florida and Texas also in the works. It offers good news for spontaneous travelers, too: Set Jet members can book a new flight up to 24 hours before takeoff and snag a seat on an existing flight up to 30 minutes before wheels go up.

One of the largest private aviation firms globally, XO Members and clients have access to more than 2,450 private jets across cabin classes. Seats or entire charters can be booked via the XO mobile app. XO Shared Membership is $595 per year, reducing the seat price for every booking including flights between New York and South Florida that are now offered up to four times daily, seven days a week.

Sentient Jet

Sentient Jet is the inventor of the Jet Card, which allows users to buy 25 hours of flights at a time and choose the aircraft size that fits their needs. The SJ25 Card offers access to light aircraft at a price of $174,375 for 25 hours; SJ25+ gets you 25 hours on mid, super-mid, and large-cabin jets for $224,622.

Magellan Jets

This Boston -based private aviation provider also offers charters, but an easier entry point is their membership program. Explorer100 Private Jet Members receive fixed-rate pricing across four cabin-size categories. With a starting account of $100,000, members receive a 12-month rate lock, guaranteed WiFi on flights, and long-leg/round-trip discounts.

Fractional ownership

With fractional ownership, your piece of the pie is allocated in hours. Owners purchase a portion or share of an aircraft, which is doled out in hours of flight time. The bigger the share, the more hours you get in the air; and unlike membership programs, it's a one-time investment. Companies like NetJets , the granddaddy of private aviation companies, and Flexjet , whose young fleet includes Embraer's super-light Phenom 300 and the ultra-long-range Gulfstream G450, offer ownership starting at a one-sixteenth interest in an aircraft. Buyers should still be prepared to shell out at least $500,000 and often much more.

With a private jet, you have the flexibility to create your own schedule, choose your own airports, and avoid the unpredictability of commercial flying. This level of convenience and efficiency is invaluable for business travelers, celebrities, or anyone who values their time and privacy. Private aviation also allows for a level of customization that is unmatched by commercial airlines, from bespoke interiors to gourmet catering.

Statistic: According to a report by Grand View Research, the global private jet market size was valued at USD 13.64 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.2% from 2021 to 2028. This growth is indicative of the increasing demand for luxury travel and the value placed on privacy, convenience, and time-saving. As the world becomes more connected, and as people seek more personalized and exclusive experiences, the allure of private jet travel continues to soar.

Unmatched Access: The World is Your Oyster

One of the most significant advantages of flying private is the access to a wider range of airports. Commercial airlines are limited to about 550 airports in the U.S., but private jets can take you to over 5,000 airports nationwide. This means you can land closer to your final destination, reducing travel time and hassle. The ability to access smaller, less congested airports not only provides convenience but also ensures a more discreet and efficient travel experience.

With private jet travel , the world truly becomes your oyster. Whether you’re flying to a remote island, a bustling city, or a secluded mountain retreat, private jets offer the ultimate in accessibility. This unparalleled access opens up a world of possibilities for personal vacations, business trips, or spontaneous getaways. It allows travelers to explore hidden gems and reach destinations that might otherwise be difficult or time-consuming to access.

Fact: Private jets can use more than 5,000 airports in the U.S., while commercial airlines only reach around 550. This extensive network of airports is a game-changer for travelers seeking convenience, speed, and flexibility. It’s not just about getting there faster; it’s about making the journey as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

How to Charter a Private Jet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Embarking on the journey of chartering a private jet is an exciting venture into the world of luxury travel. The process, while seemingly complex, can be broken down into manageable steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Initially, define your travel needs by setting a clear itinerary. Consider the number of passengers, destinations, dates, and any specific requirements you might have. This information is crucial in selecting the right aircraft that suits your needs, whether it’s a light jet for short trips or a larger, long-range aircraft for international travel.

Next, delve into the vast market of private aviation and select a reputable broker or operator. These professionals offer invaluable expertise and access to a wide range of aircraft. They can guide you through the selection process, ensuring that the jet you choose meets all your criteria for comfort, size, and range. Discuss your preferences and let them tailor the experience to your desires, from in-flight catering to ground transportation.

Understanding the charter agreement is vital. It outlines all the terms, conditions, and costs associated with your charter flight. Pay close attention to details such as cancellation policies, luggage allowances, and any additional fees that might apply. A clear understanding of these elements will help avoid any surprises and ensure a transparent and fair agreement.

Finally, confirm your booking and prepare to enjoy the unparalleled experience of private jet travel. With every detail tailored to your preference, you’re set to enjoy the ultimate in luxury, convenience, and efficiency. Welcome aboard your private jet, where the journey is just as important as the destination!

Insider Tips and Uncommon Angles

Maximizing the value of your private jet experience goes beyond simply booking a flight. It involves strategic planning and knowing the industry’s best-kept secrets. Here are some insider tips to ensure that every journey you take is as cost-effective as it is luxurious:

Firstly, flexibility is your best friend when it comes to securing the best rates. Private jet pricing can vary significantly based on demand, so if you have the ability to adjust your travel dates, you might find significantly lower prices. Avoid peak travel times and be open to flying on weekdays or during off-peak hours to enjoy quieter skies and better rates.

Secondly, don’t overlook the opportunity presented by empty leg flights. These are flights that need to return to their base or reposition for the next customer and are often sold at a fraction of the cost. Subscribing to newsletters or alerts from reputable charter companies can keep you informed about these deals, offering luxury travel experiences at incredibly competitive prices.

Lastly, building a relationship with a charter company can yield numerous benefits. Frequent flyers might find themselves with access to exclusive deals, personalized services, or even complimentary upgrades. A good rapport with your provider ensures that your preferences are known and met with each flight, from your favorite meals to the smallest comfort details, making every journey uniquely yours.

By employing these strategies, you can enjoy the opulence of private jet travel while also being savvy about your investment. Each trip becomes not just a journey but a masterfully crafted experience of luxury and efficiency.

Conclusion: The Sky’s the Limit

The allure of private jet travel is undeniable, representing the zenith of luxury , privacy, and convenience. As the epitome of modern travel, it caters to those who demand the highest standards in speed, comfort, and service. Whether you’re a business executive seeking efficiency or a leisure traveler desiring the ultimate in exclusivity, private jets provide a tailored experience that commercial flights simply cannot match.

The growing market reflects a broader recognition of the value of time and quality, with more individuals and companies choosing to invest in the unmatched experience of private aviation. As technology advances and accessibility increases, the sky’s the limit for the future of private jet travel. Should You Buy a Private Jet?

Before answering, there are many factors to consider when buying a private jet. The initial cost of the aircraft will cost $1.1 million to $90 million , brand new, however, used jets will still cost millions of dollars. Beyond the initial costs, there are many other costs to consider, such as fuel, maintenance and repairs, storage, registration, and flight crew costs. You will also want to consider where you will fly and how often you will use your private jet when selecting an aircraft type and budget for your private jet costs. We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of owning a private jet, along with how to finance your purchase.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Private Jet

  • Your Travel Routine: How often you fly, how far you travel, and how many passengers you wish to fly are all factors to consider when selecting the size of a private jet.
  • New or Used: Used planes cost significantly less than brand new planes, however, you will want to consider the maintenance, repair, and upkeep costs.
  • Number of Crew Members: The cost of a qualified crew can cost upwards of $215,000 annually, depending on the size of the private jet. So, you will need to budget for necessary crew members.
  • Fuel and Maintenance Costs: You will need to budget a realistic amount annually for fuel, as well as, maintenance repairs, some of which can be unexpected. A windshield could crack costing you $10,000 to replace, so it is important to have available funds for potential mishaps.

Costs Involved with Owning a Private Jet

As mentioned, there are additional costs, to the jet itself, to think about when considering buying a private jet.

Jet Pricing and Fuel Costs

The larger the jet engine, the higher the hourly cost for fuel . You will want to consider how much fuel you plan to use and what the hourly fuel cost averages for the private jet(s) you are interested in purchasing. The type of jet, tank capacity, gallons per hour of fuel burned, and the average cost of jet fuel in your region should all be considered when calculating estimated fuel costs .

The Hourly Rate

The hourly rate refers to the total cost of operating a private jet per hour. Crew costs, handling fees, landing fees, and aircraft repositioning fees, are all examples of costs that go into the total hourly rate of operation. For example, a propeller plane averages around $2,000 per hour, whereas a large 10-16 passenger jet can run $7,500 per hour.

Insurance(s)

Private jet insurance is available for liability, medical, hull coverage, and legal defense. The standard minimum liability covers up to $1,000,000 in damages and $100,000 per passenger, but higher premiums are available for more coverage and additional policies are required for hull (damage to the jet), and potential legal defense.

Airport Clearance Charges

Fees for landing and use of airports vary depending on the airport and the weight of the aircraft. Fees can also be added for long term waits, crew per diems, overnight, de-icing, etc. The clearance fees can amount to several hundred dollars, but are sometimes waived if refueling.

Maintenance and Repairs

Private jets are costly to maintain and repair and the amount will vary based on type of aircraft, age of the aircraft, and frequency of use. As a general rule, you can expect to absorb between $500,000 and $1,000,000 in maintenance costs annually.

Storage Costs

Unless you own an airplane hangar, you will need to factor the cost of storage into your annual operating budget. It is recommended that you are utilizing a minimum of 100 flight hours per year to justify the ownership of a private jet. As an example, a $1,000,000 private jet will require enough space to cost around $3000 per month to store.

Your private jet will require an experienced flight crew to assist with passengers and operations. An overnight flight crew within the U.S. can cost approximately $750 for a midsize jet and can double for a long range flight. A full time flight crew for a large aircraft can cost over $200,000 per year.

Upgrading/Add-ons

If you are not buying a private jet that is brand new, you may consider upgrades or add-ons to your used aircraft. You may wish to add value by upgrading the interior of your jet or decrease fuel cost by adding winglets to your jet. You may also be required by law to make certain upgrades to meet current requirements. For example, mandates may require certain avionics systems to be upgraded or installed to legally fly your private jet.

The top five value added upgrades are —

  • Avionics System Upgrades
  • LED Lighting
  • High-Speed Internet & Wi-Fi
  • Enhanced Vision Systems

Privacy and Confidentiality

Owning your own private jet can provide privacy and confidentiality for those who wish to avoid public air travel. No security checkpoints or lines of people in the airport. Celebrities and high profile business executives often fly on private jets for safety and security reasons.

Passenger Safety Costs

Private jets offer safety advantages to passengers which come at an added cost as compared to commercial aircraft. Private jet companies contract with third-party companies to ensure that they meet FAA requirements and regulations, which results in frequent safety checks at every level. Private hangers offer passengers a way to relax while minimizing contact with other travelers as they would encounter in a public terminal, thus increasing their safety. Safety is also increased with fewer passengers on board, shorter distances traveled to smaller airports, and the ability to fly above air traffic and inclement weather.

How To Finance a Private Jet

Most people do not have the millions of dollars in available cash to buy a private jet, therefore, financing is the most popular method of purchase. There are several methods of financing available to acquire a private jet.

Leasing a private jet is a popular option for many whose flight requirements are 50 hours or more annually and wish to have ownership benefits without the long term financial commitment. Leasing allows use of a private jet without the upfront purchase cost and also avoids depreciation at the end of the lease.

Personal Loans

Many lenders, such as traditional banks and aviation lenders offer personal loans for private jet financing. As with auto financing, factors such as age, make/model, history, and down payment will affect the terms and interest rates of your personal loan.

Charter Flight Memberships

Charter flight memberships are another option of acquiring the use of a private jet while maintaining the feeling of private jet ownership. Charter companies offer memberships, often with an annual and/or monthly fee plus the cost of the flight. Members enjoy a choice from a fleet of private jets, assistance with flight booking, flexible travel, security, and privacy. Chartering a jet can range from $1,300 – $6,000 per hour for medium sized jets and increase to $10,000 – $16,000 per hour for larger jets.

Advantages of Buying a Private Jet

As you can imagine, there are several advantages to buying a private jet. Not only does private jet ownership provide an elite status symbol, it also lends additional perks from privacy and confidentiality to accessibility and complete customization options for your private jet.

By owning a private jet, you can avoid the hassle of public air travel which considerably cuts down on the number of travelers encountered. Private jets allow you to bypass security checkpoints and public travel registrations.

Customization

Options for your own private jet are your choice, so you can customize your entire hull to meet your specific needs. Maybe a full kitchen is important for entertaining guests, or an office space to conduct business is necessary, or a full custom workout space is a top priority.

Accessibility

The ability to travel to remote areas or destinations away from major airports is an additional advantage to buying a private jet.

Disadvantages of Buying a Private Jet

As with any large purchase, there are also disadvantages to buying a private jet, such as a number of ancillary costs, operational challenges, and depreciation concerns.

Initial Investment and Upkeep Costs

Obviously, buying a private jet has a large upfront cost. Even if the purchase is financed, the down payment and likely upgrade costs are significant. Once the aircraft is ready to fly, you will incur ongoing maintenance costs. Parts wear down and break, debris collisions can happen, and fuel and fluids need replaced.

Hiring and Managing Flight Staff

Operating a private jet also requires crew members who are highly skilled to assist in the operation of your private jet. The size and subsequent cost of a flight staff depends on whether or not you pilot the plane yourself, the size of your private jet, the frequency of use, and the number of passengers transported.

Buying vs. Chartering a Private Jet

The decision to buy or charter a private jet is not only dependent upon your budget, it also depends on your frequency and method of use. For example, if you fly frequently but stay at destinations for long periods of time, crew and storage costs will increase. Buying a private jet has higher upfront costs and maintenance costs, while chartering a private jet allows you to avoid these costs by providing an hourly fee for usage of the private jet. We have listed out the pros and cons of buying a private jet and explained how chartering a private jet works, which should help you decide on which method is best for your specific circumstance.

  • Firstly, you need to decide on the type of aircraft that best suits your needs , considering factors such as the distance you’ll be traveling, the number of passengers, and your budget. Types of Private Jets and Aircraft Categories

Each private jet category offers unique advantages tailored to specific travel needs.

From light jets to ultra-long-range aircraft, there’s a private jet to match every journey, ensuring a truly unique and luxurious flying experience.

Light Jets: Efficient Speed Meets Compact Luxury

Light jets, also known as small jets, are the perfect blend of speed, efficiency, and luxury. These jets can accommodate up to 8 passengers and have a flight range of 2,000 to 3,000 miles.

While they may be small in size, they deliver big on performance. They’re ideal for short to mid-range flights, ensuring you reach your destination in style, without any wasted time.

Mid-Size Jets: Balance of Comfort and Capability

Mid-size jets strike a balance between luxury and range. Accommodating between 8 to 10 passengers, these jets offer more cabin space, comfort, and additional amenities such as enclosed lavatories and galley facilities.

With a range of up to 5,000 miles, mid-size jets are great for longer domestic flights or transcontinental journeys.

Super Mid-Size Jets: Spacious, High-Speed Luxury

A step above the mid-size jets, super mid-size jets redefine private flying with their extended range, faster speeds, and increased cabin comfort.

They can comfortably carry up to 12 passengers and cover around 3,500 to 4,500 miles.

Ideal for transcontinental flights and shorter international trips, super mid-size jets are for those who wish to travel far and wide without compromising on comfort.

Heavy Jets: The Ultimate Luxury in the Sky

Heavy jets are the pinnacle of private aviation.

Designed for long-haul flights, these aircraft can accommodate up to 19 passengers and offer a range of over 6,000 miles.

They boast the most spacious cabins, complete with private bedrooms, bathrooms, and dining areas.

Heavy jets offer the highest level of luxury, making transatlantic or transpacific travel an indulgent affair.

Ultra-Long-Range Jets: Redefining the Boundaries

Ultra-long-range jets are the champions of endurance and comfort.

They can carry more than 19 passengers, and with a flight range of over 7,500 miles, these jets can fly you almost anywhere in the world.

They are designed for the ultimate comfort and luxury, with lavish interiors, full-size bedrooms, private offices, and even onboard showers.

Turboprop Aircraft: Efficiency Meets Affordability

While they might not offer the range or speed of jets, turboprop aircraft shouldn’t be overlooked.

They can accommodate up to 8 passengers, and their shorter runway requirements allow them to access remote areas or smaller airports, providing a unique flexibility.

With its lower operational costs, the turboprop is a cost-effective option without sacrificing the privacy and comfort of private air travel.

Booking Methods and Providers

When it comes to booking a private jet, you have several options to choose from.

This section will discuss the methods of booking a private jet and the providers you can use.

Air Charter Services and Brokers

Air charter services and brokers offer a convenient way to book a private jet directly.  Air Charter Service  is a major private aircraft broker that has a broad range of options for you.

You can also choose from companies like  XO , Privatejetfinder and  JSX  to explore the available options and make reservations. They usually have easy-to-use websites or mobile apps, allowing you to browse and book flights seamlessly.

Membership Packages

Membership packages offer you a way to access private jet travel by paying a subscription fee or becoming part of a member’s club.

Surf Air , for example, offers an all-you-can-fly membership service with a flat monthly fee. XO and  Linear Air , on the other hand, provide flexible membership options with various privileges, such as discounted flight rates and priority access.

Fractional Ownership

As a more long-term option, fractional ownership allows you to buy partial ownership of a private jet.

This method grants you access to the aircraft for a specified number of hours per year. In return, you pay a management fee and an hourly rate for your flight usage.

It’s a cost-effective choice if you fly frequently. Providers offering fractional ownership options include  NetJets  and  Flexjet.

To decide which booking option best suits your needs, consider factors like your travel frequency, destination preferences, and budget . By evaluating each method, you can find a provider and plan that matches your unique travel requirements.

Pricing and Fees

When considering private jet travel, it’s important to understand the various costs involved.

The pricing for private jets usually encompasses several different elements.

Hourly Rate and Prices

When booking a private jet, the first cost to consider is the hourly rate, which will depend on the type of aircraft you choose.

Generally, you can expect to pay between  $1,300 and $3,000 per flying hour  for a smaller jet plane, and up to $8,000 per flying hour for a midsize jet.

While the cost varies, always remember that your budget will play a crucial role in your decision-making process.

Additionally, you should be aware of the fees associated with flying private. These can include landing fees, parking fees, and handling fees, among others.

Keeping these costs in mind will provide a comprehensive understanding of the full expenses related to your private air travel.

Empty Leg Flights

A cost-saving option to consider when booking a private jet is an empty leg flight. These flights occur when a jet returns to its home base without passengers, usually after dropping off its clients at their destination.

You can often book these empty leg flights at a significant discount compared to the usual charter prices, making private air travel more accessible.

However, be aware that these flight options may have less flexibility with scheduling and route changes, so weigh the pros and cons before committing.

In-Flight Catering and Amenities

When flying private, you have the luxury to customize your in-flight experience.

In-flight catering can range from simple snacks to gourmet meals prepared by a private chef. These services, though not always included in the initial booking price, can enhance your overall flight experience.

To ensure a seamless process, communicate your preferences early in the booking process and be mindful of any additional costs associated with your desired amenities.

Destinations and Popular Routes

The destinations and popular routes for private jet charters often reflect the travel habits of business professionals, celebrities, and luxury travelers.

These routes often connect major business and leisure destinations across the globe.

Here are a few examples.

For U.S travelers, there is a wide range of popular private jet destinations and routes.

Private jet travel offers the convenience and flexibility to visit cities such as Las Vegas, Burbank, California, Santa Ana, California, Oakland, California, Phoenix, Reno-Tahoe, Dallas, and Houston, often with the added benefit of using smaller, less crowded airports.

JSX is one company that operates scheduled service with its fleet of Embraer E135 and E145 regional jets throughout the West Coast and Texas.

Private jet access in Canada extends from vibrant cities like Toronto and Vancouver to the breathtaking wilderness.

With many smaller regional airports available for private aviation users, your travel possibilities are greatly increased.

Whether you’re flying for business or to explore scenic destinations like Whistler or Banff National Park, booking a private jet in Canada will provide you with a premium travel experience.

Europe’s vast array of popular private jet charter destinations includes major cities like London, Paris, and Rome, as well as the picturesque Swiss Alps and Mediterranean escapes such as the French Riviera.

For ski enthusiasts, a popular route is flying into St. Moritz, Switzerland from Zurich, which takes only 15 minutes by private jet to Samedan Airport.

Caribbean, Mexico and Smaller Airports

In the Caribbean and Mexico, private jets can transport you to stunning beach destinations like the Bahamas or Cabo San Lucas.

Utilizing smaller airports throughout these regions, you can enjoy a more secluded and personalized experience.

Additionally, islands not easily accessible via commercial flights, like St. Barts or Anguilla, are now within your reach when you choose to fly privately.

Your journey essentially knows no bounds, from the captivating landscapes of the U.S. and Canada to the vibrant cultures of Europe, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Coupled with the added convenience of accessing smaller, less congested airports, your travel experience becomes all the more seamless and enjoyable.

Advantages of Flying Private

Flying private has a host of advantages over commercial flights, elevating not just your travel experience, but also the convenience, productivity, and privacy aspects.

Convenience and Time-Saving

When you fly private, you can enjoy unparalleled convenience compared to flying commercial.

You have the ability to set your own itinerary and adjust it as needed, making it perfect for business trips or last-minute changes.

There’s no need to worry about long layovers, connecting flights, or delays. Your time is valuable, and flying private allows you to make the most of it.

Private flights often have shorter boarding times, allowing you to arrive at the airport closer to your scheduled departure. There’s no need to wait in long check-in queues or pass through busy security lines, making the whole process more efficient and enjoyable.

Private Terminals and Ground Transport

Another advantage of flying private is the exclusive use of private terminals.

These terminals are separate from the main airport terminal, providing a more comfortable and tranquil experience. With private terminals, you can avoid crowded, noisy waiting areas and enjoy personalized service instead.

Moreover, ground transport options, such as luxury car services or private shuttles, can be arranged to take you directly to and from the aircraft. This ensures a seamless travel experience from start to finish, without the hassle of navigating busy airport terminals and parking lots.

Privacy and Luxury

Flying private also offers the ultimate in privacy and luxury.

You can work, relax, or entertain in the comfort of your own cabin, without the disturbances that come with flying commercial.

This is especially advantageous when traveling for business purposes, as it allows you to conduct meetings and make important phone calls with complete confidentiality.

In addition to privacy, the level of luxury and entertainment on private flights is unparalleled. You can expect spacious seating, gourmet catering, and a wide array of in-flight entertainment options to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

Private Jet Prices

PRIVATE JET PRICES – THE COST OF TRAVELING PRIVATE

While private jet travel will never be more cost effective than commercial flights, your time has value and the time you gain avoiding the TSA lines and going direct to your destination is priceless. New private aircraft such as the Embraer Phenom, Citation Mustang and Nextant 400 are all driving down private jet prices  with their efficient flight costs as compared to existing models. The volume of private jet flights and executive jet charter within Priority One Jets client list allows our aviation specialists to offer private jet prices at lower rates than elsewhere in the market.

Jet-pooling or purchasing by the seat is not something that Priority One Jets offers or endorses. Many private jet companies have come along offering seat-buying programs as a way to cut private jet prices. Invariably however, these companies have gone out of business leaving clients with nothing to show for their deposits.

Many private aviation companies offer jet membership, or block-time cards. Sometimes these will be approved re-sellers of unused fractional shares, or charter brokers who make arrangements with charter companies who sell blocks of time to them, at a discounted rate. These flights still need to be conducted under FAA mandated ‘charter rules and regulations’ (FAR part 135) SkyCards do not offer the shared depreciation that come with fractional models. The occupied rate charged against a card, or an account of block-time. With Priority One Jets’ SkyCard program the client receives a 6% bonus at the end of their term and would have a dedicated aviation specialist to work with them on each and every flight.

Simple Flying

5 affordable ways to get the private jet experience.

Tips to skim the best deals for a chance of flying on such an aircraft.

  • Flying on a private jet is no longer limited to the wealthy, with options like memberships and shared flights making it more accessible for others.
  • Scheduled private jet flights offer a more affordable option, with prices starting as low as $250 per seat.
  • Choosing a smaller aircraft and flying out of alternate airports can also help lower the cost of a private jet experience.

Once considered a luxury exclusively reserved for the extremely wealthy, famous, and high-leveled corporate executives, flying on a private jet has become more readily accessible in recent years, allowing more societal statuses to enjoy the experience than ever before. Some reasons for the private aviation industry's evolution in this direction are increased competition and various chartering options.

In the current private aviation landscape, boarding a private jet no longer requires passengers to be full owners. Instead, there are now memberships, charter companies, fractional ownerships, shared private jets, and even scheduled flights - just some of the available options for people to choose from. So what are the best ways to get the business jet experience for a better price?

1 Hop on a scheduled private jet

Over a dozen private aviation operators currently offer shared private jet flights on a published schedule, utilizing private jet terminals used by these smaller providers. These include Aero, JSX, and Surf Air, to name a few. Passengers can book their expected seats on these published schedules, whichever suits their timings and convenience.

And depending on the seasonality and overall booking demand, the price for one seat can start as low as $250. But on average, the seat price is usually about $1,500 or more. While it's not as affordable as expected, such fees are still considered cheap for the private aviation industry, and passengers still get to experience Fixed-Base Operators (FBOs) and any offered concierge.

2 Skip the gym and get a private jet membership

Although private jet memberships are not cheap, the added benefits of these memberships could make getting one very worthwhile for passengers who travel non-commercial. Companies like Surf Air offer memberships for as low as $295 per month, XO at $995 per year, and Set Jet at $99.95 per month.

These benefits include more expansive access to the companies' fleets and discounted booking rates. Some companies allow refundable deposits or have no expiry dates for added flexibility. Similar to how those patronizing a gym can get memberships for added perks and the best value (as opposed to booking the gym facilities day by day, for example), the same logic applies here.

3 Flying on an empty leg

Also known as repositioning flights, passengers can get one of the cheapest deals by locating, securing, and aligning their travel schedules on empty legs . More often than not, these flights offer discounts of 50% off standard seat prices, as private operators would want to make any amount of revenue as opposed to flying at a loss.

But, as with everything that sounds too good to be true, passengers seeking empty legs must ensure their travel itineraries are highly flexible. In the event of a cancelation, they will get their refund but be left without a flight. And booking a commercial flight at the last minute is never easy, so it's likely back to a hotel.

4 Choosing a smaller aircraft

This may seem obvious, but one key contributing factor to the high costs of flying a private jet is the type of aircraft chosen. A bigger aircraft generally equals better luxuries and comforts than a smaller one, but the additional fuel and workforce required significantly increases prices.

For passengers seeking a more affordable way to travel on a business jet, a smaller aircraft will undoubtedly be much cheaper than a normal-sized aircraft. Sacrificing the seatback screens and the ability to have as many people onboard might sting. However, it's still a private jet experience that beats flying in a commercial airline's economy cabin.

5 Flying out of alternate airports

The US private aviation industry has access to over 5,000 airports nationwide, significantly more extensive than the number of accessed airports served by commercial airlines. Checking out private flight rates at alternate, lesser-known airports can help cut costs for passengers with highly flexible travel schedules.

Some specific locations may not have private jet terminals, so operators may offer lower rates at those airports compared to other sites where FBOs are available. Cheaper rates are due to the lack of usual facilities like a lounge, complimentary drinks and snacks, business areas, and passenger parking spaces.

I'm a travel writer, but it's not always as glamorous as it sounds. When I fly, I often book commercial in coach for the best price to get my family of four where we need to go.

However, there are posher options that are affordable on a case-by-case and route-by-route basis, and I'm not talking about first class.

Rather, it's entirely possible to fly private or semi-private. In some cases, it can even be cheaper than flying economy and removes the long waits and crowded lines associated with busy airports. And with boarding taking place in private hangars and planes allowing a much lower passenger count, private jets lend more naturally to social distancing.

Considering that June had more private flights in the U.S. than any month since October 2007, and after my own positive experiences flying semi-private , I rounded up some of the best carriers, from chartering your own flight to booking a publicly available seat on a semi-private jet flight. The best part? They offer prices that the average person can afford.

Here are the best private jet companies with affordable prices:

Book a flight with JSX

JSX is a private regional airline that feels like a posh private-flying experience, except the public can purchase tickets. JSX caps flights at just 30 people and operates out of private terminals and hangars (technically known as "fixed-base operators," or FBOs), which are adjacent to many major airports.

JSX saw a 55% increase in new leisure-market customers from February 2020 to February 2021, according to a statistic provided by the brand's internal analytics team. I've flown it multiple times and always choose it when rates are cheaper or equivalent to flying commercial, which they often are.

With JSX , you'll bypass the traditional airport altogether and travel through a private jet terminal. You also won't encounter crowds and TSA lines, but can still feel secure since JSX uses TSA Secure Flight, the same TSA-provided background-check processes that major airlines use.

On ordinary or off-peak dates, the airfare is quite competitive (even lower than some budget carriers' for certain legs) and the experience is far superior, including snacks, drinks (alcoholic and non), checked bags, and pet fees.

Book a flight with Aero

Aero is among the country's newest airlines, launching in February 2021. It offers premium seating on direct flights between private terminals, using custom-designed 16-seat jets; no flight will have more than 16 passengers.

This shared-charter model offers the benefits of private aviation — like bypassing commercial airport terminals and packed airliners — for a fraction of the cost with access to a curated list of coveted destinations.

Aero offers a seamless experience through its personalized concierge service available to all guests, which includes hosts giving personalized attention, from booking on-the-ground transportation and localized experiences to curating in-flight amenities and sourcing special beverages and artisan snacks — basically any preflight and post flight logistics that the passenger wants to be handled.

Interiors are designed by Aero's in-house design team (not common among startup airlines, where design is typically outsourced). Interiors include dynamic lighting, a custom Bongiovi Acoustic Lab sound system built into the panels of the walls for 360-degree sound, hand French-stitched Italian leather seat covers, custom suede sidewalls, and signature ultra-leather piping on the ceiling.

Book a flight with Set Jet

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, Set Jet is a membership-based private jet charter, available for security pre-screened and pre-approved members. While there is a monthly membership fee, if you fly often, the value can be quite strong.

Only members may fly and to be eligible, you must be a U.S. resident with a valid driver's license or passport issued domestically.

Set Jet facilitates private jet charters to six of the most frequently traveled destinations on the West Coast, as well as nonstop private jet charter flights between Los Angeles and New York City, and seasonal flights to Cabo San Lucas and Aspen. The service operates through private terminals without the traditional inconveniences related to commercial air travel.

Members fly on the Bombardier Challenger 850/CRJ 200 and CRJ900 aircraft, specifically customized with 15- to 19- seat cabin configurations. Top-end amenities and finishes make these planes resemble luxury hotel suites with high-gloss wood, marble accents, buttery leather, and plush carpeting. Pilots are typically military-trained jet fighter pilots with significant experience and pristine records.

Book a flight with Wheels Up

Wheels Up allows travelers to book private charter flights at an all-inclusive hourly rate. Founded in 2013 and a publicly traded company as of July 2021, Wheels Up is one of the major players in private aviation, having acquired many others along the way.

Originally a membership-only model, the company now allows anyone to book available flights on-demand using the app. There are 1,500 planes in the fleet, including the King Air 350i (an eight-seater propeller jet), the Cessna Citation Excel/XLS in the middle category (with a four-hour range), and the ultra-fast and high-flying Cessna Citation X, with a large, posh cabin. It can fly over six hours nonstop.

I got to try out two of these on a company-sponsored trip between Los Angeles and Napa. With seven to 10 seats in each aircraft (compared with, say, 30 for JSX or up to 19 on Set Jet), Wheels Up offers a truly elite private jet experience. When I flew the Citation X, the cabin had eight luxurious leather seats and even a posh leather-covered loo. Snacks and beverages were available on-demand in a small lounge area, and the ride was smooth, quiet, and peaceful.

Wheels Up members also receive benefits at Wine Access, Waldorf Astoria hotels; pay-by-the-seat shuttle service from Westchester to Nantucket through Nantucket Shuttle Service; AmEx membership discounts; and many other perks and benefits.

Book a flight with SurfAir

Los Angeles-based Surf Air offers members access to private charter flights for a fixed monthly fee.

The service focuses on scheduled short-haul flights across California and Texas, with frequent flight options similar to commercial airlines but with the posh feel and perks of private air travel. Members can book trips via an easy-to-use mobile app, and then arrive at the airport just 15 minutes before takeoff without lines or crowds.

Memberships start at an accessible $199 per month, which allows access to all flights on a per-seat basis. For $999 per month, travelers get unlimited off-peak flights and access to buy everything else. Prices go up from there: for $2,999 per month, you can fly without limits across the entire network.

Book a flight on Blade

Blade allows travelers to book by the seat on scheduled flights throughout the Northeast and West Coast, or charter or crowdsource a flight anywhere in the world. The fleet includes not just jets but also helicopters, turboprops, and seaplanes for mega flexibility. In doing so, they offer many options at multiple price points for a range of travelers, and the diversity of the Blade fleet is unique in the field.

No membership is required to fly Blade . Users simply download the app or book online for scheduled flights. Travelers may also use the app to book their own private charter, crowdsourced charter, or individual seats on a scheduled flight.

In New York, it's become quite a popular way to reach JFK to connect to major flights as opposed to the slog of traffic.

FAQ: Cheap private jet flights

How much does it cost to fly private.

It depends on the airline you choose. The ones on this list that are only semi-private start as low as $119 per flight with no membership fees.

If you charter a totally private flight, however, expect to pay thousands of dollars in most cases.

What is the cheapest private jet company?

We've seen strong value on a per flight basis from JSX as their fares are pretty low so long as you don't book during peak times.

Subscription model private airlines, however, such as Set Jet or SurfAir come out as affordable in the long run if you're someone who flies frequently.

How do I find private flights?

Start with our list here. Many of these companies allow you to book cheap private flights either on their website or via their mobile app.

Private Jet Rental: The Ultimate Guide for Travelers

A private jet rental offers you many different benefits that you simply can’t receive in first class.

charter a challenger 350

Click below to jump to the different sections:

If you are a business professional who travels on a regular basis, you probably fly business class so that you can reach your destination without unneeded complications. Flying business class gives you access to a range of great benefits that make your flight as painless as possible.

But here’s the kicker:

Business class does not let you enjoy the best flight experience.

You might be surprised to learn the advantages you can get when renting a private jet and how cost effective they can be. There are multiple ways to rent a jet with some being way cheaper than you’d expect!

Read the Private Jet Costs and Payment Options section to learn more. There are many reasons to fly private, but let’s start with why it’s a smarter choice than flying first class.

Things to Know Before Renting or Chartering a Private Jet

Renting vs chartering a private aircraft.

While many use “renting” and “chartering” interchangeably when it comes to private travel, there are significant differences between the two.

Renting a private jet entails leasing the aircraft itself. The crew, the flight operational management, and everything outside of the jet is not included. While this does make sense for some cases, most travelers want an all-encompassing service experience that addresses all aspects of their flight requirements.

Chartering a private jet includes leasing the aircraft along with a comprehensive service package, including:

  • Flight Crew
  • Flight Operations
  • Flight Scheduling
  • Catering and In-Flight Entertainment
  • Luxury Ground Transportation
  • Travel Arrangements (Hotels, Event Tickets, etc.)

Chartering is highly favored for its world-class level of service it offers to travelers. Flight brokers and charter companies handle every operational detail to provide an experience that emphasizes personalization and convenience.

How to Rent a Private Jet in 5 Steps

Chartering or renting a private jet can be broken down into five simple steps:

  • Plan your itinerary (destinations, dates, passengers, amenities).
  • Research and reach out to a reputable jet charter company for a charter quote .
  • Review aircraft options and compare private jets.
  • Sign the charter agreement and make payment.
  • Confirm arrangements and board the aircraft.

1. Planning Your Itinerary

Before you reach out to a private jet charter company, you first must iron out a few details of your trip.

  • How many passengers will be traveling with you?
  • What is your route?
  • What time and day would you like to fly?
  • What onboard amenities would you like?
  • Do you require any additional arrangements such as travel planning or ground transportation?

Note, however, that one of the benefits of chartering a private jet with a company like Jets.com is flexibility.

If any of your travel needs change, a good jet charter company will be able to handle your requests swiftly and seamlessly.

2. Research Reach Out to a Private Jet Charter Company

Private jet charter companies have the experience and relationships to make private travel easy and save you money along the way. Before you choose a company to charter a private jet with, you will want to make sure you do your due diligence and research.

Read client testimonials, online reviews, and talk to a sales representative with any questions you may have.

Here are a few questions to ask before booking a private jet rental:

Safety & FAA Certification

  • Who is the charter operator taking charge of your flight, and are they FAA certified?
  • What is the flight operator’s experience?
  • How long has the operator been in business?

The Private Jet

  • What jet models are in the jet charter fleet?
  • What year was your selected aircraft manufactured?
  • Have there been any repairs/upgrades/refurbishments made to the jet?
  • What is the number of flight hours the jet has clocked in?
  • What is the number of crew members that will partake in the flight?
  • What is the flight crew’s experience?
  • How long have has each member been working in the company, and are they also in moral standing with the FAA?

3. Review Aircraft Options and Compare Private Jets

Most reputable private jet charter companies have access to a fleet of private jets for you to choose from .

While a good broker will be able to recommend the perfect aircraft for your travel needs, comparing private jet models will help you feel confident in your decision and avoid any last-minute surprises.

4. Sign the charter agreement and make payment.

The contract provided by the charter company outlines the terms of your flight.

It’s important to carefully read through the charter contract agreement to understand the commitments and liabilities, including cancellation policies and any additional costs not covered in the initial quote.

Payment typically follows, either as a deposit or the full amount, as determined in the contract.

5. Confirm Flight Details

A few days before your flight, we’ll check in to make sure all arrangements are as discussed and make sure you’re ready to fly! This includes itinerary, special requests, and confirming departure time.

Bon Voyage!

Benefits of Private Jet Charter

Here are 5 reasons why chartering a jet makes more sense than taking a commercial flight:

private jet rental infographic

BONUS: Purchasing a 25 hour Jet Card is a great way to cut down the cost of renting a private jet. Jets.com offers monthly promotions  to make this option even more affordable.

1.  Convenience

Passangers Boarding Private Jet

More than 5,000 airports actively operate in the US , and they are available for the use of the private planes.

In contrast, commercial aircraft only have 500 airports. It is undoubtedly more convenient to land closer to your destination and avoid having to potentially take a lengthy cab ride.

If you hate the numerous inconveniences that typically take place at the airport, you can choose to fly private to avoid security lines.

You also do not have to think about getting to the airport very early or maintaining liquids under a specific allowance.

Want to know the best part?

Just show up, park your car near the plane, give your ID, and board.

Even when you fly international, the process with customs is much smoother than with commercial flights.

2.  Productivity

working on a private jet

If you have ever flown commercially and you have to bring your work with you, it is hard to focus on what you are doing.

Babies may cry, mothers may be lecturing their kid, or couples may be fighting behind you. The noise can easily distract you, and you end up not finishing what you need to do.

Private jets will not give you this inconvenience.

On top of wasting less time and moving faster than commercial flights, you can get your work done while in the air because you are alone or in similar company.

Another reason is security.

Even in business or first class flights, it can be risky to carry out a classified transaction and conversation. You do not know who may be around and listening in.

Additionally, a survey in 2009 by the National Business Aviation Association showed that the respondents rated themselves to be 20% more productive while they are on the company aircraft compared to staying in the office.

Meanwhile…

They also estimated that they experience a 40% reduction in productivity when they fly commercial .

3.  Travel Time

Beechcraft 400a light jet

When companies travel in groups, it may make sense to factor in the loss of work time, which can affect the business financially.

Private jets are much faster .

Let’s consider traveling to Fresno from Palm Springs, California, which should be under an hour in the air.

Flying commercially , this trip can cost you seven hours when taking a commercial flight – considering the plane transfers, wait time, and the whole commute.

Driving can even be faster since it may take just six hours.

However…

If you choose to rent a private jet for the trip, you can get to your destination within 45 minutes.

Some destinations have no airline service or are limited for commercial flights, which makes a private jet much faster and more convenient than driving to the place.

If your itinerary has multiple stops and you only have a short timeframe, it makes sense to fly on a private plane to save time and hassle.

4.  Hassle-Free

man at airport waiting for a flight

Most travelers dread going to airports because they don’t enjoy walking through airport security checkpoints.

You need to arrive at the airport much sooner than your flight is set to depart to account for the time it takes to get through the security screening.

The Hassle of Security

  • You need to take off your shoes
  • Go into a body scanner
  • Explain anything that grabs the officer’s attention
  • Restrictions on what you can bring, including liquids, can be quite stressful.

When you charter a jet, you do not have to deal with issues, such as

  • Baggage check
  • Not being able to bring your own food
  • A boarding procedure that can waste a lot of your time.

Instead, you get to skip the security checkpoints and walk right to your aircraft

Private flyers love this means of traveling because they do not have to be concerned with airport difficulties.

In fact, the ban on liquids that happened in 2006 did not affect those who take a private plane.

Additionally…

You will not worry about traveling with items, such as product samples, sports gear, and the like. If you have a pet, you are welcome to take it with you in the cabin.

5.  Affordability

25 hour private jet card

It may sound crazy:

But we associate private jets with the word “affordable,” primarily because they already suggest luxurious living.

There may be times when commercial flights can lead to a more expensive trip than renting a private jet like when:

  • You lose out on the cost of the flight due to having to cancel the flight.
  • You need to book a last-minute flight that you did not expect to take.
  • Missing a meeting with a new client due to a flight delay can be expensive in more ways than one.

You may think private planes are just an option for big players in the industry.

But not anymore:

Even small companies can benefit from them as they become a more affordable method for traveling.

You can save more with private jets when you consider a day out of the office compared to two days in a hotel room.

BONUS: Purchasing a 25 hour Jet Card is a great way to cut down the cost of renting a private jet. Jets.com offers monthly promotions to make this option even more affordable.

With the benefits, you can get out of chartering a private jet, flying private is more than just about comfort.

It has real advantages that can even help you spend less while flying in luxury than with an airline.

6.  Choose Any Meal You Desire

catered meal on private jet

Most people board the plane and hope the flight attendants serve food that is at least edible and you are stuck with limited options.

Most people who have ever traveled experience this reality.

When you book a charter jet, you can choose any meal you want.

Meal flexibility is among the top private jet amenities you could hope to enjoy during your travels.

You will let the crew know what you would like to eat during your flight, and they will honor your request.

7.  Depart When You Need (Even if it’s Last Minute)

chartering a private jet

Another tremendous benefit of using a private jet is that you can leave when you want.

No matter how much you pay for a business class ticket…

You will have to leave on the airline’s schedule .

This can cause you to:

  • Get up very early in the morning to catch your flight.
  • Leave hours before your flight in order to beat traffic.
  • Take into account the amount of time to go through security & park your car.
  • Book days, weeks, months in advance to get a better price.

Private jet charter defeats that roadblock and lets you decide when to depart.

8.  Keep Your Luggage in Sight

private jet interior

Checking your luggage for a standard flight adds to the inconvenience that most people accept as a fact of life

But bag checks can soon be a thing of the past.

That is if you choose to fly on a private jet.

Private jets let you keep your bags and all of your belongings in sight for the duration of the flight. You won’t need to worry about lost luggage or wait for your bags at the end of your trip.

Private Jet Costs and Payment Options

There are many ways you can rent a private jet.

This depends on many things including:

  • Your travel situation.
  • How frequently you will need it.
  • Whether you will need a jet one time.
  • Your need it for a series of flights.
  • The cost savings from travelling year round.

Depending on your needs,  there’s an option for you.

If you regularly travel for business?

Take a look at 25 hour jet cards .

mid-size jet card

Want to travel lavishly to Las Vegas without it costing all your gambling money?

You’ll want to find a last-minute flight on a jet that you can fill with your friends.

If you travel frequently and want access to other luxury amenities and benefits, like events and hotel discounts

You’ll want to look into a private jet membership.

Want to have more ownership of the plane?

Fractional jet ownership is your best option.

Private Jet Charter

private jet charter flights

This is the most standard option.

Chartering private jets is quite similar to booking a commercial flight.

Just select your departure and arrival cities, dates, preferred take off and landing time, and the number of passengers and you’ll get a broker to find the cheapest options for you.

How Much do Private Jet Rentals Cost?

Please note that the following prices are estimates and may vary based on aircraft type, availability, and additional services. We encourage visitors to contact Jets.com for personalized quotes and more information.

Jet Rental Cost by Hour / Aircraft

Jet rental cost by popular route, 25 hour jet cards.

A Jet Card is a prepaid card, bought in 25-hour increments, that is redeemed to book a flight on one of our private aircrafts with as little as 24-hour notice.

It’s a simplified and cost-effective way to experience our safe and luxurious private travel.

If owning a jet doesn’t make sense for you, but you still fly often, Jet cards and fractional jet ownership are your best options.

For individuals that already own a jet, you may still need a jet card handy if your jet doesn’t go far enough or hold enough passengers.

It can also come in handy if you’re traveling with your jet, but the family needs to meet up with you.

Private Jet Membership

Fly frequently, but don’t want to deal with the headache or maintenance of owning your own jet?

Private jet membership or fractional jet ownership are your best options. Memberships can include perks on food, hotel stays, retail, and more.

If you’re considering a membership, you’ll want to be very careful as there are many horror stories of inexperienced private jet companies or start-ups failing and members losing all the money they put into it before ever getting to board a jet.

Last Minute Flight

By far the most cost-effective way to travel on a private jet is by booking last minute with a group that can rent the whole plane.

Booking this way can get you prices that would shock you.

Not everyone has the luxury of last minute travel, but if it is an option for you, give us a call within a few days from when you want to depart and we can let you know what deals are going on.

Fractional Jet Ownership

Fractional jet ownership is a way to own or lease a private where each owner is responsible for the cost to purchase, maintain and operate the jet.

Going this route does guarantee access to a certain amount of hours or days with the jet or fleet of jets, but does have its limitations.

This tends to be one of the more expensive ways to travel in a private jet, and you lose the convenience and flexibility that jet cards and one-time charter.

Oh and if the value of the jet significantly diminishes when you go to sell back your share, you can lose more money than you planned.

Another difference between choosing first class and chartering a private jet is that while first class is about the airline, flying on a private jet is about you.

When you charter a private jet, you will be able to fly whenever and wherever you desire in privacy that is designed to meet your specific needs.

You can select from a range of different private jets to charter from our private jet comparison catalog .

Here are some comparisons to help you to understand the different types of private jets that we offer and which one might be best suited for your purposes.

Hawker 400XP light jet

If you have a small group with whom you will be traveling, one of our light jets may be the right choice for you.

These jets are more economical to fly than light jets and do not need as great of runway distances to come to complete stops, making them ideal for you if you fly to areas that do not have commercial airport facilities available.

private jet safety standards

We now live in an age where it’s virtually impossible to travel without getting on a plane.

With over 5,000 aircraft in the air at any given point in time , it’s undeniable that the aviation industry continues to grow.

Rising numbers, however, means busy airports, overbooked flights, and hours sat crammed into a middle seat on a noisy flight.

It’s during these moments that most of us think about what it would be like to upgrade to a private jet, flying comfortably with just the people we’re traveling with.

This might not actually be such a bad idea.

Flying private isn’t as unattainable as most people think it is.

In fact…

Most jets are chartered for business trips, rather than owned by a billionaire to fly to a private island. This is only one of the misconceptions shrouding the private jet industry.

One of the most inaccurate, however, is that flying private is less safe than taking a commercial flight.

In fact, private jets are just as safe, if not safer than flying commercial – especially in light of recent controversies that have occurred on many commercial flights.

Still need convincing?

Keep reading to learn more about why you should consider a safe, comfortable flight on a private jet.

Publicity Plays a Role

The misconception that flying private is more dangerous than flying commercial is due in large part to how widely publicized incidents on private jets are.

Since the passengers on board private jets are often public figures, the media is inclined to sensationalize the event in order to gain attention.

Although there are different ways to compare statistics, more passenger fatalities have actually occurred on commercial flights than on charter and private jets in the last 15 years.

Of course, you should always do the appropriate research on any jet company before boarding.

Many actually have much more rigorous safety standards, which we’ll talk about in greater detail later.

At the end of the day, flying is still the safest way to travel, regardless of whether the flight is commercial or private.

Less Passengers, Less Chances to Cut Corners

We’ve all experienced this sensation…

The feeling of lining up to board a flight and wondering how all these people can possible fit onto the plane.

The sheer number of people flying on the average commercial aircraft on a daily basis is not only uncomfortable but can actually pose a safety hazard.

Cash-starved airlines are encouraged to fly as many passengers on as many flights as possible to maximize their profits.

Each flight puts stress on the plane’s structural integrity.

Furthermore…

The temptation to cut corners on safety measures may rise for overworked crewmembers.

By contrast, getting a maximum number of passengers onto the plane is not the focus when flying private.

Since the price of the journey does not hinge on how many seats are filled, safety can be emphasized and all proper steps carried out.

The lower overall passenger volume also means less wear and tear on the place, making for a safer journey.

This is not to say that safety is not important to commercial flights.

However, higher numbers always increase the odds of mistakes.

More Rigorous Safety Checks

jets aviation safety system

As mentioned before, private jets often undergo more rigorous safety testing than commercial flights.

Reputable companies will use third-party organizations specialized in safety to evaluate the safety of their organization. The metrics and methods for evaluating the businesses are incredibly strict, meaning that companies that receive the stamp of approval are extremely safe.

For example, Jets.com adheres to Assure Safety Standards , ensuring that passengers receive the best in both pilots and aircraft.

Assure standards ensure that all jets and pilots exceed the rigorous FAR 135 safety standards , which include drug and alcohol testing, flight crew time and rest requirements, pilot record disclosure, and more.

All aircraft are also either ARGUS Certified or Wyvern Registered, two of the most respected and recognized symbols of quality and safety in the Aviation business.

Furthermore, Jets.com’s Chief Safety Officer has over 30 years of experience.

Fly Whatever the Weather

Many of us have experienced the inconvenience of a canceled or delayed flight due to inclement weather.

Even more serious, some of us may have had to endure a frightening journey or make an emergency landing because of extreme weather.

Interestingly, private jets are better equipped to deal with bad weather.

  • Because they have the ability to land at more airports than commercial flights, private jets can change plans very quickly. This means that if the weather gets too rough to fly in, a private jet can make a quick landing rather than put passengers through scary conditions.
  • Some jets even have the ability to fly above weather at up to 51,000 feet.
  • Of course, a good pilot will never take unnecessary risks just to get to a destination on time. But with the ability to avoid this factor, private jets look even more desirable.

Get There Faster and Smoother

price of private jet travel

Here’s the bottom line:

One of the greatest appeals of flying on a private jet is cutting down on the miserable time spent walking through the airport and waiting for hundreds of people to board and exit .

Not only do private jets offer the opportunity to get on and off the plane faster, they often actually fly faster.

The fastest passenger planes in the sky are actually private, often flying nearing the speed of sound.

As previously mentioned…

Jets can fly above weather, cutting down on time spent navigating rough air.

The ability to land at more and smaller airports also cuts down on total travel time. Instead of landing at a major airport and taking a cab or public transportation to the actual destination, private jets can land at smaller, local airports and offer passengers door to door service.

Flying private is only a luxury if you are safe. As commercial flight prices continue to rise without increasing their safety standards, flying in a private jet seems less unrealistic.

Regardless of whether you’re looking to impress clients or go on vacation, safety should always be the number one concern.

Flying without fear is certainly worth an investment.

Travel in the low season or shoulder season Hotels and flights are cheaper during low season or shoulder season.

For example, hotels in the Caribbean cost less in the summer and fall than they do during winter or spring break and European hotels are less expensive in the winter than in the summer.

Even if using miles and points, there is usually more availability during this time. I usually prefer shoulder season for the best combination of lower prices and good weather. If you travel in low/shoulder season you have a better chance of booking a luxury hotel.

Where to Stay

Stick with One Hotel Alliance to Unlock Upgrades

Just like with flying, stick to one hotel alliance. For example, Starwood Preferred guest includes Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton, Westin + many more. Le Club Accor includes Sofitel, MGallery, Novotel + many more. When you stick with one hotel alliance you gain status which unlocks room upgrades, early/late check out, free breakfast, free business lounge access, priority check-in etc.

Save By Tracking Price Drops While travelers spend hours and hours prior to reserving hotels in order to find the best price available, once they book, they forget about their reservations till the date of travel.

Big mistake!

Prices tend to drop 42% of the time AFTER hotels are booked and can drop up to 72% off the total reservation amount!

Pruvo is a free, automatic web service that tracks price drops for existing hotel reservations and notifies the customer once we detect a better price for the exact same hotel room.

Discounted Gift Cards, Points & Flexibility Purchasing discounted hotel gift cards through gift cards sites like Raise.com . Routinely the site offers gift cards with discounts of 4-5% at places like the Four Seasons , Hotels.com or Ritz Carlton properties Purchasing gift cards When the site has a sale adds 4% savings and is the easiest way to save money.

Use credit cards to earn points to pay for hotels.

Frequent flier points from credit card sign-up bonuses and spending fund a large percentage of my trips. I received two million plus points in sign-up bonuses alone and traveled to places like Aruba for less than $1,500. I recently stayed at the Park Hyatt Zanzibar using a combination of points plus money to secure a room for about $114 and earned points at the same time.

A recent stay at Radisson Blu in Kigali, Rwanda before my gorilla safari was gratis by using points during my visit.

Being flexible on where you stay permits me to optimize my savings. In Cities like Washington, DC or New York City, I find each visit another hotel has a fantastic deal. I pick among the top hotels based on price. It’s also fun trying new sites.

Janice Lintz , Travel Writer who has traveled to 116/193 UN countries and 160/327 Traveler’s Century Club destinations and is writing a book about traveling the world on points.

Split Your Hotel Reservation Sometimes you may save $1000 by just splitting one hotel reservation into several parts. Because hotels have different daily rates, a different combination of the same nights may cost you much less.

Clement Zhang, FindOptimal

Vacation Rentals A vacation rental can look more expensive per night than a hotel, but when you factor into eating out and room service (especially when traveling as a family) it might make more sense to book the more pricey suite or a whole villa. In a lot of ways, booking a rental apartment with a kitchen in the heart of a city is going to work out as best value – more expensive by the night, but you don’t need a rental car, and can eat in so you’ll pay less for food.

Use a Luxury Travel Advisor Virtuoso Agents have access to luxury hotels that provide amenities like free breakfast, food & beverage credit, etc. Otherwise, I like to use Hotel Tonight to find luxury boutique hotels.

In London, I prefer the Charlotte Street Hotel and Rosewood London – both bespoke luxury.

Get social Luxury travel brands have loyal followings and we all tend to advertise and promote special offers to people who follow us. Sign up to your favourite brands on Instagram and Facebook and sign up to their newsletter. It’s where you’ll find the best deals.

Just ask. It’s always worth asking when booking if there’s anything the representative can do. You might find you get a small discount, or something extra thrown in. Don’t ask once you’ve booked – make sure it’s before!

Private/Small Group Tours I prefer to hire private guides or use small group tours like Context Travel. If you are keen to really save money look at Airbnb Experiences.

Where to Eat

price of private jet travel

Go local Go to local markets, buy local brands, make an effort to avoid Starbucks and any international brands, and look to go where the locals go. Prices are usually cheaper for local brands and you get a great experience out of it too.

If you’re staying in a Kid & Coe property, you can always ask the host what they recommend, and where the best value family eateries are. Having a local insider is a great way to find out these things.

Breakfast Included and Sample from Small Plates I find that if my room includes breakfast, the buffet usually carries me through the day. I find it impossible to eat a big meal and then sit down to a multi-course lunch as well.

Ordering lots of small plates at dinner are fun and is cost effective. Most people tend to want to experience many flavors rather than eat huge portions. I find I eat significantly less when I sample rather than when I order an appetizer, entree, and dessert.

Janice Lintz, Travel Writer

Go Fancy for Lunch Book the fancy restaurant for lunch instead of dinner if you want to save money on eating out.

What to Avoid

price of private jet travel

Unecessarily Overpaying It’s just like cable, and you need to unbundle the trip. You tend to overpay when you don’t know what the cost of each component. Providers can add fat, and I like to trim it. The easiest way to reduce costs is to understand what each item costs.

The African safari companies intentionally try to overcomplicate the trips when in reality, going on a safari shouldn’t be more challenging to plan. I insist on knowing what I am paying and tend to book the activities online myself to save money. I find it is the same amount of work and the savings add up since I travel so extensively.

Airport Lines The best way to save money while skipping airport lines around the world is Blacklane PASS. One hundred dollars gets you:

– Past the security line (for departing flights and connecting international flights) – Past the immigration line (for overseas arrivals) – Assistance with your belongings through security – Help with VAT refunds – Someone watching your belongings while you shop in the duty-free store – A personal concierge escorting you between gates, lounges and airport transportation

PASS also offers lounges for $50 worldwide. For all of these, you don’t need membership in any airline or government program.

Yes, you can fly private — here’s the secret that will help you do it

Benji Stawski

Flying private is on everyone's bucket list, and for good reason. Aside from the luxuries of having a plane to yourself, flying private comes with an unparalleled level of convenience. You can fly on your own schedule, there are no security lines , no boarding groups — you get the idea.

If you've ever found yourself researching the cheapest ways to get the private jet experience , you've likely come across the term "empty leg." Empty leg flights are a great way to score highly discounted private jet charters. However, your travel plans need to be flexible and there are some important details you need to be aware of.

Today we're going to go over what empty legs are, how the experience compares to a conventional charter and how to book them. Let's get started!

New to The Points Guy? Sign-up for our daily newsletter and check out our beginner's guide .

price of private jet travel

What is an empty leg?

As the term suggests, empty legs are flights that are scheduled to fly without any passengers. These operate when an aircraft needs to reposition or return for a charter. They're sometimes also referred to as "dead-heads," "repositioning legs," and "ferry flights." According to charter-jet company XO, 30%-50% of the private jet charter fleet often flies empty.

Empty leg flights can be as cheap as 75% off the standard charter price. Some private jet membership programs offer members highly discounted or even complimentary access to empty leg flights (more on that later).

Related: Why planes fly with only one passenger on board

Given how costly they are to operate, charter companies try to avoid having to fly empty legs in the first place. As a result, they're often not made available until fairly last minute. The routes are also limited and there's no way to predict availability.

With these things in mind, there are two major downsides of booking empty legs. First, the flight could be canceled at any time, whether due to mechanical issues, the jet getting booked for another full-priced charter or any other reason. Unfortunately, cancellations do happen and unlike commercial airlines, the charter company would not be responsible for getting you to your destination. Second, due to the nature of empty legs, you'll typically only be able to book it in one direction. So, you'll need to find your own way home.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Mommy Points (@mommypoints)

How the empty leg experience differs

Empty leg flights are similar to conventional charters in that you'll still be able to arrive minutes before your flight. However, empty legs have stricter schedules to follow, so there's less flexibility with delaying a flight if you're running late. Additionally, unless you're booking by-the-seat, you'll still get the entire jet to yourself on an empty leg.

Unless specifically arranged, empty legs typically come with either no catering or a limited basic catering. This would generally include light prepackaged snacks, soft drinks and basic alcoholic drinks.

Like regular charters, most empty leg deals will list the type and model of aircraft. However, as previously mentioned, empty leg flights are not guaranteed and could be canceled at any time. So it's important to either have a back-up option or be prepared to cancel your trip entirely if the flight falls through.

How to book an empty leg flight

While not all charter companies market them, most offer empty leg specials. After all, what company wouldn't want to generate some extra revenue and maximize their fleet utilization? Additionally, there are brokers advertising other operators' empty legs, essentially acting as a middleman, similar to online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline. However, as with commercial flights, it's typically best to book direct .

You can browse empty leg specials online through companies like Victor , VistaJet, Jettly, New Flight Charters, among a long list of others. Many sites even let you select your preferred departure airport and create alerts for when new deals become available.

Related: The cheapest ways to get the private jet experience

As previously mentioned, empty legs are typically posted at the last minute and the routes are pretty random. However, with the recent surge of charters due to COVID-19 , there's been an increase of deals available, especially on popular routes like New York to South Florida.

While most empty leg specials are for the entire aircraft, XO lets you book empty legs by-the-seat. This makes private jet travel a lot more affordable for those traveling solo or as a pair. Just be aware that XO is known for canceling empty legs quite frequently.

Empty leg flight prices

Empty leg pricing varies by route, aircraft, dates and other details. To give you an idea, they are typically priced about 50%-75% lower than the usual charter. Take, for instance, a flight from New York to South Florida. A mid-size jet charter can run you upwards of $20,000 one-way. However, you can often find empty leg flights on this route for $9,000-$12,000.

price of private jet travel

These deals can be found throughout the U.S., including coast-to-coast flights, and internationally. For instance, West Coast flyers could book a light jet empty leg from San Diego to Chicago for about $7,250. The full-price for this nearly four-hour charter is usually around $25,000.

price of private jet travel

You could book a super light jet with seven seats from Cannes to Toulouse-Blagnac (a one hour flight) for just 558 EUR ($680 USD).

price of private jet travel

Empty leg specials typically reflect the all-in rate, including fuel, landing fees and other surcharges. Since you're typically booking the entire jet, you're free to fill all the seats and can bring your furry friends for no additional charge. The savings really add up if you're traveling as a family. The $8,920 empty leg between New York and Florida shown above would come out to $1,115 per person if you fill all eight seats, the empty leg between San Diego and Chicago would be about $1,000 per person and the empty leg between Cannes and Toulouse would be under 80 EUR per person.

Even better, the pricing for empty leg flights is often negotiable. Just beware that although the operator can cancel your flight at any time, you typically won't be able to cancel once you commit to an empty leg booking.

Free or near-free empty leg flights

The best empty leg flights are those that are "free." Several private jet programs offer complimentary or near-free empty leg flights to members.

With a Delta Private Jets Sky Access membership ($6,000 annual fee; no longer open to new applicants), you can book unlimited empty legs departing within 24 hours. You're guaranteed the whole aircraft to yourself every time, so you could theoretically split the membership cost with a group of friends or family that travel with you regularly. You'll even get a 20% discount off select Delta fares to get you home from your empty leg destination.

Alternatively, you could now unlock highly discounted empty leg flights through Wheels Up — Delta Private Jets' parent company. Wheels Up offers several membership tiers, with the cheapest option starting at $2,995 in your first year and then $2,495 per year. All members get access to Hot Flights, which allows you to book discounted empty leg flights for as low as $320 for an entire plane. Members also have access to Shared Flights, Shuttle Flights, and The Community, an online platform of members-only forums to facilitate flight sharing. Other perks of a Wheels Up membership includes the opportunity to fast-track Delta elite status .

Bottom line

Empty leg specials are a terrific way to save on private jet flights. However, you must be flexible to take advantage of them and have a back-up option if your flight is canceled.

Keep in mind that there are other ways to save on private jet travel as well. For instance, companies like Blade and XO let you book by-the-seat on regularly scheduled flights. There are also some airlines like JSX and Boutique Air that offer near-private experiences at commercial travel prices.

The Best Private Jets for 2023: Bigger, Faster, Further

If you want to fly farther, faster, in bigger, more lavish private jets, your time has come.

By Doug Gollan

ACJ TwoTwenty

If you want to fly farther, faster, in bigger, more lavish private jets, your time has come. Leading manufacturers Gulfstream and Bombardier continue their battle to offer the longest nonstop flights, while HondaJet is dreaming up a light jet that can fly nonstop from New York to Los Angeles.

At the same time, Airbus Corporate Jets and Dassault Falcon are focusing on living space and luxury. Not to be outdone, Lufthansa Technik has unveiled custom concepts to store your motorcycles and create a private balcony that, when you are on the ground, converts your VIP airliner into a five-star hotel suite with a view.

And then there is the question of where to park your jet. We have that covered as well, so read on.

Airbus’ Corporate Jet unit believes its ACJ TwoTwenty, a private jet version of the Airbus A220-100 that seats 135 passengers, is ready to fill a niche for customers who want a luxurious VIP airliner experience but don’t need a record-setting range.

The TwoTwenty offers 786 sq ft of cabin space for up to 19 passengers, which Airbus says is about three times more than large cabin private jets. The cabin can be configured for up to six different zones, and cabin height is a spacious 6 ft, 6 in with a cabin width of 10 ft, 8 in, and cabin length of 78 ft, 1 in.

Key features include all seats capable of reclining into flat beds, a dining or board table seating up to eight, and space for a king-size bed in the Owner’s Suite with an en-suite bathroom and a rain shower. You can also connect to colleagues and business partners via video conference on a 55-in flat-screen monitor. And, with USB sockets at each seat with inductive chargers in credenzas and cabinets, your team will never run out of power.

Corporate Jet Investor lists the new jet’s pros as “space and cost. A huge cabin with more than 90 styles and layouts with an impressive range.” On the con side, it notes that the ACJ TwoTwenty will fly up to 5,650 nautical miles, the equivalent of over 12 flight hours. However, that is about 1,500 nautical miles short of a Global 7500’s range.

Future TwoTwenty owners may just find that designing the interior and choosing between all the options is half the fun, as ACJ’s Creative Studio allows you to envision different cabin configurations in real-size virtual reality.

Bombardier Global 8000

Bombardier Global 8000

Weeks after delivering the 100th Global 7500, Bombardier unveiled the Global 8000 . While the list price is just an extra $3m, coming in at $78m, the manufacturer is promising owners will “fly farther than ever before with an industry-leading 8,000 nautical mile range [compared to 7,700 nautical miles for the Global 7500] and unrivalled short-field performance in all-weather conditions.”

It will also fly at Mach 0.94. Trade publication Aviation International News reports: “A development aircraft [Global 8000] flew supersonically last year, marking the first time that a civil jet has officially passed through the sound barrier since the days of the Concorde. It was also the first time any transport aircraft had achieved Mach 1 using sustainable aviation fuel.”

For owners, it will mean they can fly nonstop on more long sectors such as Dubai-Houston and Singapore-Los Angeles, even with less-than-optimal weather conditions.

The Global 8000 is already drawing some admirers. Ian Moore, VistaJet’s chief commercial officer, said that his company, already the largest operator of Global 7500s, is eyeing the newest variant, which could come via a conversion of existing orders — or perhaps even a new order.

During the delivery ceremony for VistaJet’s 10th Global 7500, and Bombardier’s 100th, Bombardier CEO Eric Martel told the audience when he returned to the OEM to take the corner office in March 2020, his first trip was to visit Vista founder and chairman Thomas Flohr to rekindle the relationship. That move led to a new order for Challenger 350 super-midsize jets.

Dassault Falcon 10X

Dassault Falcon 10X

French manufacturer Dassault hopes its Falcon 10X will redefine the large-cabin, ultra-long-haul private jet segment, bridging the gap between purpose-built private jets and VIP airliners, which are aircraft converted from commercial airline usage for private flying.

Business Jet Traveler writes: “The largest Falcon built to date will challenge intercontinental rivals like the Bombardier Global 7500 and the Gulfstream G700… when it enters service in 2025.”

Business Insider was even more forceful. “Dassault’s new $75m private jet with the largest cabin of its class is primed to blow Gulfstream and Bombardier’s flagship jets out of the water,” blared its headline. The Falcon 10X will have the biggest cabin of purpose-built private jets. Its cabin will be 6-ft, 8-in high, and 9-ft, 1-in wide. Dassault claims the 10X is almost 8-in wider and 2-in taller than its closest competitors. The cabin will also be brighter.

The 10X comes with windows nearly 50% larger than the Falcon 8X. Its 38 windows will make it the “brightest cabin in business aviation,” according to Dassault. In terms of speed and range, the new jet will have a top speed of Mach 0.925 and fly 7,500 nautical miles nonstop. That will allow owners to fly nonstop from New York to Shanghai or Los Angeles to Sydney.

Gulfstream G800

Gulfstream G800

Like Bombardier, Gulfstream seeks to extend the range of nonstop flights with its G800 . The Savannah, Georgia-based manufacturer boasts: “The all-new G800 is the world’s longest-range business aircraft, extending your reach to more people and places around the globe in a single flight.”

“When the first G800 test aircraft rolled out at our announcement last fall, we changed the game once again for our industry,” said Mark Burns, president of Gulfstream, adding: “The G800 pushes the boundaries of performance even further with Gulfstream-designed aerodynamics and cabin technology, and we look forward to our customers benefiting from the longer range at higher speeds in our exceptional cabin environment.”

HondaJet 2600

price of private jet travel

Following its very light jet, or VLJ HondaJet HA-420, Honda Motor Company, Ltd, is again looking to shake up the private aviation market. Its HondaJet 2600 is a light jet concept that will fly nonstop transcontinental flights with a cruise speed of 450 knots and a ceiling of 47,000 ft at a cabin altitude of 6,363 ft.

With cabin seating for up to eight, this HondaJet acknowledges its longer missions with seats that fully recline and can even be converted into flat beds. Whether customers decide they want to fly the 2600 to its limits remains to be seen. Its cabin height is just 5 ft, 3 in, and the cabin width is 5 ft, 1 in, providing a considerably smaller cabin experience than the typical super midsize aircraft that are used for five- and six-hour coast-to-coast flights.

However, HondaJet is undoubtedly not looking for a quick hit. Business Jet Traveler notes: “Honda plans to take its time developing the aircraft — and it can afford to. Its parent company is a Japanese colossus with $123bn in annual revenue last year alone. Moreover, Honda Aircraft has a track record that must make its parent patient: The HA-420, which began development in the late 1980s as a ‘research project,’ wasn’t delivered to customers until 2015.”

Bombardier Challenger 3500

price of private jet travel

Can the Challenger 3500 maintain Bombardier’s leadership position in the super-midsize private jet category against Textron, Embraer and Gulfstream? The Canadian OEM’s second major update to the Challenger 300 platform, which first flew in 2001 and then became the Challenger 350 in 2013, is intended to fend off rivals who are also upgrading their offerings.

Entering service in September 2022, the Challenger 3500 offers the Nuage recliner seat, which was launched with the Global 7500 as a standard for the aeroplane. Bombardier markets the chair as “the industry’s first zero-gravity seating position for reduced lower back pressure, optimized weight distribution and improved circulation for effortless comfort.”

The Challenger 3500 will also reduce cabin altitude by 31% to 4,850 ft at 41,000 ft, while becoming its second business jet to receive an Environmental Product Declaration (EDP). The EDP traces the supply chain of all materials used in addition to the manufacturing, bringing sustainability to materials used in the cabin. Continuing the environmental theme, its test flights are using Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Additionally, a new eco app will help pilots reduce fuel burns via optimized flight plans.

During the summer of 2022, Bombardier won its first order for the 3500 by a European charter operator from Italy-based Air Corporate SRL. Other key operators of the Challenger 350, such as NetJets, Flexjet, VistaJet, and Airshare could also upgrade existing orders to the new 3500, say industry experts.

Textron Aviation

At the opposite end of the market, with showers, balconies and nonstop flights up to 16 hours, Textron Aviation is also making news. In spring this year it unveiled enhancements and upgrades across its Beechcraft Baron, Beechcraft Bonanza and all Cessna piston aircraft.

Chris Crow, Textron’s vice president of sales, says: “Customers will experience a noticeable change when they’re inside each of these aircraft.” The Bonanza G36 is getting a 155-lb increase to the maximum takeoff weight, giving it a maximum useful load of 1,213 lbs in its standard configuration with six seats.

Also, new production Bonanzas, along with Beechcraft Baron G58 aircraft, will offer three new interior schemes and a new cockpit layout with a standalone autopilot controller. Also included: a Garmin GI 275 electronic standby, a carbon monoxide detector integrated in the Garmin avionics system, USB ports at every seat, powered headset plugs in the cockpit and updated LED exterior lighting for improved visibility.

Cessna owners will also find a modernized cockpit. All new production Cessna high-wing piston aircraft will include the Garmin GI 275 electronic standby. The standby modernizes the cockpit panel by eliminating three analog standby instruments and providing additional flight data. The interior of Cessna high-wing piston aircraft also features refreshes with the addition of Alcantara inserts in the seats along with a backlit USB A/C port in the cockpit.

Sky Harbour Group

As OEMs are hitting record backlogs of orders for new private jets, buyers of large-cabin private jets are discovering that finding spaces to park their aircraft can be a big issue. As ultralong-haul private jets have increased in length and wingspans, hangars haven’t kept up. At popular airports, there often isn’t availability — hence the short repositioning flights that recently put Kylie Jenner and Drake in the bullseye of climate campaigners.

What’s more, if you can even find hangar space at your local airport, shared hangars increase the chance of accidents, known as ‘hangar rash,’ when aircraft are being moved. Tal Keinan, the CEO of Sky Harbour Group, says with stressed supply chains, even a minor bump can sideline an airplane for weeks and months, waiting for both replacement parts and spare slots for repairs. There is also potential damage when fire suppression systems in large hangars get triggered accidentally.

Keinan’s solution is to offer private jet owners their own dedicated hangars. Essentially built as row houses for your private jet, each hangar is dedicated to one tenant, fitting one to two aircraft. There is space for offices and to park your car, so it’s not sitting in an unprotected lot.

There is also the privacy of driving into your hangar via a landside garage door and then boarding your jet while it’s still in the hangar — a nice perk in bad weather. The dedicated hangars also mean your airplane is easily accessible for maintenance, which can be difficult in shared hangars.

Best of all, you don’t have to wait to fly. Keinan says it can often take several hours to get your jet ready to fly if it is parked in the back of a crowded hangar — which, he notes, “kind of destroys the primary benefit of owning your own jet.” Current locations under development include Denver, Houston, Miami, Nashville, Phoenix and Dallas, with plans for dozens more.

Lufthansa Technik

price of private jet travel

While not a new jet, Lufthansa Technik has partnered with Brabus to offer a customized, after-market Adventure Lounge concept for VIP airliners that will make your private jet a moving five-star hotel. The concept is based on bringing the superyacht experience to private aviation, where vessels double as both home and a movable base camp for elite adventures.

The Adventure Lounge replaces what would normally be excess baggage storage on the lower deck; it can already be viewed from the main deck through a glass floor. Accessed via a staircase from the passenger deck, the Adventure Lounge has space for motorcycles, allowing owners to land and head out for some off-road fun.

“In addition to the floor extending from the front fuselage area to form a veranda and the projection surfaces for virtual content integrated on a large scale in the cabin design, the Brabus Adventure Lounge perfectly rounds off our concept for world explorers,” says Jan Grube, sales director of Lufthansa Technik’s VIP & Special Mission Aircraft Services.

Of course, if you would just like to enjoy the views alfresco after you land, Lufthansa Technik is offering an Airbus A330 Freighter retrofit. As part of adapting the cargo jet to a VIP airliner, the main deck cargo door is converted so that it opens with a balcony.

Boeing Reveals Executives Got an Extra $500,000 in Private Jet Perks

A n internal Boeing review found that Chief Executive David Calhoun and other top executives took personal trips worth more than $500,000 on the company’s private jets and other planes that were improperly recorded as business travel.

The review and correction, which Boeing disclosed in a securities filing, was prompted by a Wall Street Journal investigation last year into the executives’ use of the company’s fleet of private jets, people familiar with the matter said.

Boeing’s review found that some flights by the executives in 2021 and 2022 “were not previously classified as perquisites by the company but should have been classified as such in accordance with SEC rules and guidance,” the company said in its proxy filing April 5.

Executives may dart between their residences, work sites and personal destinations such as vacation spots with portions of the trips being officially counted as personal or business trips. In general, a private jet flight taken for commuting purposes may be considered a perquisite, and thus a taxable event, while flights between two company offices may not be. The pandemic and increased working from home has complicated the matter.

When executives use a company jet for personal travel, it typically counts as taxable income. The Internal Revenue Service said earlier this year it will begin auditing dozens of companies over the personal use of corporate jets by executives. The Securities and Exchange Commission and IRS have different reporting requirements for personal jet flights.

Boeing’s executive flight operations unit and its board of directors scrutinize personal use of company aircraft, the Journal previously reported. Boeing said in its proxy that flights to attend outside board meetings or speaking engagements may count as perquisites under SEC rules.

Boeing’s board requires Calhoun to use the company’s private jets for personal travel, not just business, for security reasons. The company recently said the CEO was stepping aside, part of a shake-up after a Jan. 5 midair blowout and production problems.

Other executives in the revised disclosure—finance chief Brian West; recently departed commercial chief Stan Deal and defense chief Ted Colbert—may also use Boeing’s fleet of private jets for personal trips. For these executives, the revisions include some personal flights on charter, leased or commercial aircraft.

Last year, Boeing said the company followed all laws and regulations when it came to classifying executives’ aircraft use: “As it relates to the tracking and categorization of flights, we have professionals and subject matter experts who help us strictly comply.”

In the September 2023 article, the Journal reported that Calhoun and other executives hadn’t relocated to the plane maker’s headquarters in Arlington, Va. Instead, flight records suggested the CEO flew from his two homes to the main office and other Boeing locations via the company’s fleet of private jets.

Some other company executives have worked out of offices near their homes, the Journal reported. Boeing opened a small new office near the Connecticut homes of West and treasurer David Whitehouse.

Calhoun addressed the Journal’s article at an internal meeting with employees in November, saying he wanted executives to travel and spend time visiting its operations.

“I don’t want anybody, by the way, to misinterpret a silly article that got published in The Wall Street Journal about me traveling a lot,” Calhoun said, according to a recording of the meeting the Journal reviewed. “That’s my objective. That is what I want to do. That is what I want everybody at the enterprise level to do.”

In its proxy filing, Boeing reported $514,000 in personal flights on company aircraft for Calhoun in 2023, part of his total compensation of $33 million that year. The revisions concerned the prior two years. The revised 2022 tally for Calhoun’s personal flights came to about $332,000, an increase of $93,000 from the company’s calculation last year, according to securities filings. For 2021, the tally increased by $49,000.

This New Air Travel Company Will Fly Your Dog Internationally on a Private Jet — For a Price

Flying private is a luxury most travelers will never experience (and some eco-minded travelers might never want to, even if given the opportunity). To rub salt in the wounds of everyone who does daydream about jet-setting on G5s, a new service called BARK Air is launching private jet charters for dogs (with their owners in tow) starting in May.

BARK Air is a new venture from BARK, a company that sells monthly dog-toy-and-treat subscription boxes. In partnership with private jet company Talon Air, the airline intends to make air travel more comfortable for canines and their human companions. But these flights aren’t just dog-friendly — these flights are all-out pooch-pampering.

The “white-paw experience,” as BARK brands it, includes pre-flight consultations with concierges to ensure your pup gets exactly what it needs on board, an easy crate-less check-in process, and a long list of in-cabin amenities. Think calming music, noise-canceling earmuffs, lavender-scented towels, snacks and treats, practical essentials like leashes and pee pads, couches and dog beds, and a beverage service with options including water, bone broth, and “doggie Champagne” — not to mention on-demand belly rubs, as well as plans for the “first-ever in-air dog park.”

Four-legged passengers will be required to be leashed or on a lap during takeoff and landing but otherwise allowed to roam the cabin freely. All dogs must be accompanied by a human, whether you’re traveling with your pooch or have BARK Air arrange an escort.

Of course, flying private on a Gulfstream G5 carries a hefty price tag, whether the passenger is human or canine (or both). Pet owners can expect to pay between $6,000 and $8,000 for a one-way ticket aboard BARK Air, which covers airfare for one dog and one human passenger. Each flight will have room for 10 dogs and their companions.

BARK Air is launching two flight routes to start, connecting the NYC metroplex to the Los Angeles and London areas. The airline will operate weekly flights between the Westchester County Airport (HPN) in New York to the Van Nuys Airport (VNY) near LA, as well as bi-monthly flights between HPN and the UK’s London Stansted Airport (STN). Round-trip flights on the domestic route will cost $12,000. Round-trip on the transatlantic route is a whopping $16,000.

Middle East latest: Israel 'considered revenge attack on Monday' – as ex-Mossad intelligence chief says striking Iran's nuclear facilities 'on the table'

A former Israeli spy agency official says targeting nuclear facilities in Iran is "on the table" - as a report suggests Israel considered, but decided against striking Iran on Monday. Meanwhile, Iran's president warns the "tiniest move" against the country would bring a "fierce" response.

Iran is currently holding its National Army Day parade ceremony in Tehran.

Drones and missiles were paraded as soldiers marched alongside them, some carrying the Iranian flag.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other top military officials are also in attendance.

The annual event was established by the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979.

An update on our 12.40pm post - in which we reported that strikes from Lebanon had injured people in northern Israel.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group has since claimed responsibility, saying it launched missiles and drones at a military facility in northern Israel in retaliation for Israeli strikes that killed Hezbollah members yesterday.

At least 14 Israeli soldiers were injured in today's attack, with six in serious condition, according to the Israel Defence Forces.

The Israeli Ynet news site said the soldiers were in a community centre in the village.

The IDF in retaliation said it "struck the sources of fire" after identifying several anti-tank missile and drone launches from Lebanon towards the Bedouin village of Arab al Aramshe.

For context: Iran-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which means "Party of God" in Arabic, openly calls for the destruction of the "Zionist regime in Palestine" and is deemed a terror organisation by most Western powers.

The militia has long aligned itself with Hamas and Islamic Jihad and has frequently clashed with IDF forces on the Israel-Lebanon border since the most recent conflict broke out on 7 October.

But the violence has largely been contained to areas at the border, shaped by what observers have called unwritten rules of engagement between adversaries that have long threatened each other with catastrophic damage in the event of war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously warned that Beirut would be turned "into Gaza" if Hezbollah started an all-out war.

By Ben van der Merwe and Saywah Mahmood, Data and Forensics Unit

Iran's president has vowed Israel would face a "massive and harsh response" if it attacks, as US officials believe it is planning to do.

Iran launched more than 330 missiles and drones towards Israel on Saturday in response to Israel's alleged bombing of its Syrian consulate.

On Wednesday, Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron said he hoped that Israel's potential retaliation "does as little as possible to escalate this conflict".

Experts told Sky News that Israel is likely to be considering an airstrike on critical Iranian infrastructure, including air bases and nuclear facilities.

Israel is well-equipped for such an operation. The country possesses 39 state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighter jets, the fifth largest inventory in the world.

Sky News security and defence analyst Michael Clarke says the planes are "pretty well invisible".

"It is rumoured that Israeli F-35s have already been around and about Iranian airspace on surveillance missions," he says.

The chancellor has said that the G7 will be "united" in its response to Tehran, amid reports that the West is weighing up major sanctions on Iran.

"When Iran attacked Israel, Western support was rock solid," Jeremy Hunt told our economics and data editor Ed Conway .

"If Iran takes action that destabilises the global economy through what it does in the Middle East, then they will face concerted response from Western countries," he warned.

"I think G7 countries will be united in our response to what Iran has done and anything Iran may plan to do."

Earlier, Israel's ambassador to the UK urged the West to hit Tehran financially so its grasp on the region via its proxies might slip.

"This is the time to be hard on Iran [and] there are a number of diplomatic ways to do that." Tzipi Hotovely said (see 7.00pm post).

Israel considered a near-immediate response to Saturday's attack by Iran, but decided against it, according to a report.

Israel considered conducting retaliatory action on Monday night, before eventually postponing it, five Israeli and US sources told Axios .

The report is unverified.

The Israeli officials reportedly told the outlet that the war cabinet changed its mind on military action "for operational reasons", while American sources said the US was not sure of the scale of Israel's planned response, but thought it was likely it would provoke Iran into escalation.

The officials reportedly said IDF chief of staff General Hertzi Halevi and the the cabinet's other former generals — defence minister Yoav Gallant and ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eizenkot were pushing  hardest for a military for a response, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the leader of the ultra-orthodox Shas party, Aryeh Deri, were said to be "more cautious".

Qatar is re-assessing its role as mediator between Israel and Hamas, the country's prime minister has said.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said its role was being misused by some politicians for their own goals.

"Qatar is in the process of a complete re-evaluation of its role because there has been damage to Qatar," he said, without providing any further detail.

The Gulf state has been a key figure in discussions between the two warring sides, alongside voices from Egypt and the US.

The country is home to some senior Hamas officials, including Ismail Haniyeh.

The time has come for the West to sanction Iran, Israel's ambassador to the UK has said.

After Iran "tried to kill thousands of Israelis" with its drone and missile assault at the weekend, Tzipi Hotovely told Sky's lead world news presenter Yalda Hakim in Jerusalem that a "watershed moment for the Middle East" had arrived.

"I live in London, could you imagine [if an Iranian attack hit there]?" she said.

Watch a clip from her interview here...

She described Iran as "an octopus", which was spreading itself across the Middle East via its proxies.

"It's so clear that Israel needs to show an act of deterrence," she said.

"I think [what comes] next is sanctions," she added.

"This is the time to be hard on Iran [and] there are a number of diplomatic ways to do that."

It has been suggested that hitting Iran financially could help drain some of its proxy groups of their power base.

Iran has backed, funded, and trained several groups across the Middle East region, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and a number of other factions based in Syria and Iraq.

On how Israel could respond militarily, Ms Hotovely said "it's for the war cabinet to decide".

Ms Hotovely previously made headlines back in December when she told Sky News that Israel would not recognise a two-state solution.

Israel has blocked crucial items of aid on insufficient security grounds, the head of a charity trying to get equipment into Gaza has said.

Melanie Ward, CEO of Medical Aid for Palestinians, told Sky News that Israel had rejected blankets based on the fact that they were green, among other refusals.

"I saw for myself a number of the items that have been rejected by the Israeli military supposedly on security grounds, that included a large box of crutches... an anaesthetic machine, I saw an X-ray machine rejected," she said.

"I saw first aid kits, bleach, a wheelchair, all these kinds of items.

"There's no excuse for rejecting these.

"This is the kind of situation that we are trying to deliver aid in."

Turning to the UNRWA - the UN's Palestinian Agency, Ms Ward urged the UK to resume its funding.

Major countries, including the US and UK, halted funding the agency after Israeli accusations that some of its staff took part in the 7 October attack by Hamas militants.

Israel released a dossier that it claimed supported the claims, but Sky News' and other news outlets who viewed the document said it did not provide evidence for the allegations.

Australia, Sweden, the European Commission, Finland, France and Canada have all resumed funding for UNRWA, and Ms Ward said the UK should follow.

"UNRWA is desperately needed... without it tens of thousands more Palestinians in Gaza will needlessly die," she said.

This sentiment has been echoed by major humanitarian agencies, including CARE International, which said the UK "is withholding funding to enable one of the most vital lifelines to ensure food, water and medical supplies can reach civilians across Gaza".

"Famine is already present in Gaza and with each day of delay conditions for vulnerable groups, including women and girls deteriorate further," CARE's UK head of advocacy and policy, Dorothy Sang, said.

"It is deeply concerning that the UK government is choosing delay over getting aid to those in dire need."

It follows a similar call earlier today from shadow foreign secretary David Lammy (see 13.10 post), who said: "It's shocking in the face of famine that the UK is one of the last major donors that has not yet resumed funding, without explanation."

It's 6pm here in London - 7pm in Gaza and Israel and 8pm in Tehran, so let's re-cap the day's events.

Much of the day's focus has been on how Israel could respond to Iran's missile and drone barrage at the weekend:

  • The former director of intelligence at the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, said targeting nuclear facilities in Iran was among the options on the table as Israel decides how to respond to Saturday's attack;
  • Lord Cameron said during a visit to Israel it was "clear" that Benjamin Netanyahu's government will respond.
  • Meanwhile, Iran's president warned the "tiniest move" against the country would bring a "fierce" response, according to state media;
  • On aid for Gaza, the UN said Israel denied "more than 40%" of its aid delivery requests to northern parts of the enclave last week;
  • It emerged that a single Israeli shell destroyed more than 4,000 embryos when it struck Gaza's largest fertility clinic in December.

The cabinet has approved a five-year plan that would see $5bn spent on rebuilding and strengthening communities near Israel's border with Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would invest the funds in housing, infrastructure, education, employment, health and other areas.

The funding came after the Hamas attacks on 7 October targeted communities near the border.

"Hamas terrorists wanted to uproot us - but we will uproot them and deepen our roots," Mr Netanyahu said in a statement.

"We will build the land of Israel and protect our country."

The prime minister's office said local communities would work with government ministries, and along with the business sector and philanthropy, to bring the region to be a "vital, flourishing and attractive area".
