  • C6662QTmarinak 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Total disappointment My experience dates back to June 2021 when my husband and I booked a Cucubarra cruise with dinner for my birthday. It was a gift from my husband for my birthday. It was my 60th birthday. We live in South Australia and were supposed to fly to Brisbane to celebrate. But unfortunately there was a pandemic and a few days before the flight, the interstate borders were closed. I wrote to Cucabarra Cruises for a refund, but they sent me an open-ended voucher that we wanted to use after a year. But then the flooding happened and Cucabarra closed due to flood losses. We again could not get our service (dinner cruise). We asked for a refund again, but were told we could not get a refund and the voucher was perpetual. Since then it has been another 2 years and we only have the voucher and total disappointment. Read more Written 17 March 2024
  • chilvers59 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles The worst company I have dealt with. 18th January 2022 I booked and paid in full for 9 adults and 2 children to celebrate a mile stone birthday for my wife (60th), who was having her birthday early March. We had a number of interstate friends and family coming up for the day and the cruise was a surprise to my wife. Unfortunately, the floods hit and we were left without a cruise or venue. I had to try to make urgent alternate plans for the group two days out. I then had to rebook and pay in full for the new venue. I am now thousands out of pocket. So I emailed the Kookaburra cruises expecting a refund as they were unable to provide the service I had booked and paid for. (Afterall, we were not at fault, and we did not cancel). They stated that their refunds policy clearly states no refunds. So I copied their policy and stated we did not cancel you did and we were still willing to attend ? 1.2.2. Refunds Please note that this experience is non-refundable so prior to making a booking, please ensure that all parties are willing to proceed. Please check that the date selected is correct prior to making your booking. Deposits/final balances paid are non-refundable To which they stated they were not allowed on the river due to the floods. So they refused to offer a refund and gave me coupons, which half the guests are unable to use as they are interstate. Now Feb 23, these also appear to be useless as they have gone into receivership ? I have now heard the boss is in court for indecent assault... So if anybody hears of a class action, can they please add me to the list. Thank you. The worst company I have ever dealt with for fair play or empathy. Read more Written 24 February 2023
  • DFandLR 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles TOTAL THIEVERY Utterly shameful and appalling treatment by Kookaburra Queen. April 2022. Won't ever book with this company and strongly advise all others not to either. We also had a dinner cruise booked & paid for which was cancelled due to the floods, and although they would be insured, Kookaburra Queen obviously feel that it's ok for their well-intentioned customers to be left out of pocket while they profiteer from the circumstances. Disgraceful behaviour and absolute theft. Going off other reviews this is clearly a common practice by them. (Refer to the Office of Fair Trading Queensland for information regarding ‘no refund policies’. Attempting to use this statement within ‘terms & conditions’ is illegal as Consumer Rights apply.) • natalie c 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Kookaburra cruises, Brisbane, shameful service, non refund policy is theft We had a cruise booked for Saturday 5 March, which we were expected to pay up front for and were asked to accept a no refund clause aimed at people not turning up, fair enough.Unfortunately, a storm resulted in the river being closed and the cruise being called off by the company. For some reason, their no refund policy appears to still apply despite us being in Brisbane at that time and available for the cruise. We are not from Brisbane and it is incredibly difficult for us to accept and use a credit voucher. Despite putting this forward to the Kookaburra Cruise management team, we have been given an adamant no, you will not get your money back and if you have a problem with that please complain through ACCC. This us very stressful and feels like being robbed, imagine being asked to pay up front for your meal in a restaurant and then told sorry, chef is not available, not our fault but come back another time and we are prepared to serve you. In the meantime we will keep your money even though we cannot provide you with the promised service, we commented on Facebook, all comments have been removed, shame on you, Kookaburra cruises .😔😔😔 Read more Written 6 March 2022
  • Jacqueline L 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Total rip-off from Kookaburra Queen We were booked for a dinner cruise on the Kookaburra Queen, unfortunately it was cancelled because of flooding. When we asked for a refund we were given a categorical no as they had a no refund policy. This would be understandable if we had cancelled but surely not when they cancel. As this was a one off trip of 4 friends the offer of a credit was not acceptable. When asked for management contacts were asked for we were refused and told to go through ACCC. I can't believe the arrogance of this company. The hotel we are staying in had problems with the lifts and immediately offered a full refund if we wanted to go elsewhere. Total difference in attitude. Read more Written 5 March 2022
  • noelanic2014 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Theft by refusing a refund when also refusing to give the service paid for. I would NEVER encourage my family or friends to book with these people. They refused a refund for a service they also couldn't honor. We were only given an option of "credit" after they cancelled the cruise, then they told us to take it up with senior management, then refused to give us their details saying "go straight to ACCC. THIS is called Theft. We will be taking this further, what a disgusting way to treat out of town people. Also inferred they" lost everything ", meaning that they wouldn't be able to" honor "the future so called credit, however they will be claiming insurance not like us small people, we just get robbed by them. 17 Of The Best Long Lunch Spots In Brisbane

By Jessica Pridmore

30th Sep 2022

best-lunch-brisbane

Is there anything more indulgent than a long lunch? When you’ve got good food and drink, great company and the whole afternoon to knock yourself into a food coma it makes any other daytime activity seem pretty drab.

To ensure you get maximum enjoyment from your next long lunch location, we've wrapped up the best places in Brisbane to take a long lunch.

Hellenika

Fortitude valley.

Housed on the rooftop, and overlooking the very classy open-air pool of boutique hotel, The Calile, Hellenika is peak summer hangs, giving off serious greek island vibes, which translates very simply as the perfect day-to-night, drinking and dining haunt James Street was hanging out for.

Kiff & Culture’s Artisan Food & Drink Tour

Various .

We take your suggestion of lunch and we raise you a lunchtime tour that takes in a pan-Asian banquet, a wine tasting AND a beer or gin sampling session at some of Brisbane’s coolest venues. Yeah, we thought you’d like that. Kiff & Culture’s Brisbane Artisan Food & Drink Tours include all this and more, complete with transport between the venues in a funky minibus. Get a group together for a private tour or just grab a bestie or two and jump on a public tour—either way, you’ll be in for a treat.

Manly Boathouse

Manly .

A long lunch with actual water views, not just the murky river? For that, you’ll need to head to Manly, where the Manly Boathouse  is dishing up some serious beachy vibes alongside epic eats. Whether you opt to eat in their airy, all-white dining room overlooking the harbour or book out one of their little boathouses, you can feast on snacks, seafood and steaks while you work through their lengthy list of cocktails.

interior of opa

Brisbane CBD

Greek food is the ultimate shared feast, and when it’s dished up in a venue as good-looking as Opa, it just takes the whole experience to the next level. Depending on your group size, you could be dining in one of the massive circular tables lining the river, or in one of the stunning plush booths overhung with greenery. Either way, you’ll be drooling as soon as the food starts coming your way.

Banc Brasserie

Brisbane cbd.

Hidden inside an imposing sandstone building that used to be an old bank, Banc Brasserie is a swanky spot where you can tuck into sophisticated Euro-inspired eats like beef tartare with oyster mayo, enoki mushrooms and pomme gaufrette; steak frites served with skin-on fries and bernaise or pepper sauce; and spanner crab and scallop raviolo with bisque and caviar. We don’t mind it for a leisurely week day lunch ‘meeting’, but if you’ve got the time to settle in, you can start things off at the bar, where a menu of bank-themed cocktails await. A Stocks And Bonds, with espresso, Pampero Especial, Pedro Ximenez Sherry, spiced honey and chocolate bitters sounds better than any investment option right now.

Howard Smith Wharves

Part of the Apollo family that has laid roots in Sydney and Tokyo,  Greca  is a contemporary Greek taverna poised on Brisbane’s shores. Taking up prime waterfront real estate, Greca is the perfect setting for Greca’s Greek feasts, being both close to the water and an example of a modernised classic. Notable standouts on the menu are the slow roasted lamb shoulder and the grilled saganaki drizzled in local honey, but the Full Greek set menu is your best bet if you want the full gustatory tour.

a table on the deck at Stanley

Stanley

Howard smith wharves .

If you’re long lunching at Stanley , you’ll want to be picky with your seating and request a table outside on the deck, with those glorious Story Bridge views in front of you. Inside is beautiful, don’t get us wrong, but there’s something about eating Peking duck pancakes and dim sum with a river breeze (and hopefully a bottle of wine) that screams long lunch.

Same Same

Fortitude valley .

There’s no such thing as having just one or two courses at Same Same —it’s banquet-style all the way, and you’ll definitely need more than a quick hour to polish off every dish. You can either let the kitchen decide what that banquet involves for you, so you’ve got more time to knock back a spicy chilli margarita, or you can just go hard on eats like fried master stock chicken ribs,  lamb shank massaman curry and grille scallops in curry butter.

South Bank

Since moving over to their new riverside perch in South Bank,  Otto  has gotten more enticing than ever, with even better views than before to go with their top notch Italian eats, particularly on a sunny afternoon over a Brisbane lunch. Best of all, you can start or finish your meal (or both) in the bar right next door, where the Aperol spritzes are plentiful and the views are just as good (if not better).

a booth at maya in the sun

Once you're ensconced in a plush blue booth at Maya overlooking the city views, you won't want to leave—so you'd best not have any plans for the rest of your afternoon. The first thing you order should be one of their incredible cocktails, before you choose from crispy soft shell crab tacos, lobster rolls, kingfish ceviche or crumbed jalapenos stuffed with smoky queso and black beans.

Julius Pizzeria

South brisbane.

Julius Pizzeria  is easily one of the best pizza joints in Brisbane. Big call, but true. You’ll be hard pressed to find something on the menu that won’t hit the spot. The calamari is too tasty for words, while the Number 1 pizza’s name says it all: it’s freaking delicious.

Libertine

Paddington .

Not only is Libertine one of our fave spots for date night option, but it's perfect for long lunches. The courtyard dining area is just the place to settle in to for an afternoon of drinking lychee cocktails while you tuck into lamb dumplings and crispy pork belly with a side of DIY green papaya salad.

Bar Alto

New farm .

A riverside seat on Bar Alto’s breezy deck, a pot of mussels in chilli, tomato and garlic sauce with a side of crusty bread in front of you and a glass of pinot grigio in hand—now that’s what we call living. A stalwart in Brisbane’s long lunch scene for almost two decades, this Italian spot really knows how to serve up a chilled afternoon.

a table with a view over the river and city

Joey’s

Kangaroo point .

While sundowners at Joey’s overlooking the river and the city skyline can’t be beat, this clifftop spot is ideal for a casual lunch—just make sure you get in early enough to nab a prime table with a view. The menu has a little bit of everything, from sharable plates of calamari, grilled prawns and ceviche, to steaks, burgers and pastas for mains. Personally, we’d be hitting the pizza menu for a slice and pairing it with a bottle of rosé—because one glass is not going to be enough.

Il Molo

Bulimba .

Italian eats, Aperol spritzes and riverside views—what more could you want in a lunch venue? Not much we say, and when it all comes with the backdrop of Il Molo’s stunning interiors, you’ll feel like you’re tucked away somewhere in Southern Italy. When you’ev finished your lunch of pizza, pasta or perhaps secondi like the parmesan crumbed chicken with lemon butter, stay on for Aperitivo hour and sip on lemon sgroppino all afternoon long.

The Jetty

Now pulling up at a table at The Jetty in South Bank’s River Quay is a pretty good shout, we’d agree—but picking up one of their picnics and taking it down to the grass to nibble on by the river? Well that’s a feed worth clearing your whole afternoon for. Featuring spiced sweetcorn fritters, and an antipasto spread of prosciutto, salami, cheddar, olives, gherkins, hummus, toasted pita and crackers, the picnics can be ordered for two or for three and you can even BYO a few drinks to sip while you sup.

Motorwagen

Whether you want a classic fish and chips or something more adventurous, the airy, vintage Mercedes-Benz-inspired  Motorwagen  is a dreamy spot for a long Friday lunch—or any day of the week really, we're all about long lunches on a Tuesday. There's a snappy cocktail and wine list to pair with your meal, and you'll definitely want to stay a little longer for one of their next level desserts to finish things off.

If you're looking for something more casual, we suggest an epic brewery— here are Brisbane's best .

The Israeli military has conducted missile strikes against Iran, a senior U.S. military official told NPR on Thursday. There are also reports of explosions in Iraq and Syria.

The strikes appear to be the response Israel vowed to carry out after an Iranian attack on Sunday, when Tehran fired hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel. Most of Iran's volleys were intercepted or caused little damage. The U.S. military official spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday.

The extent of Israel's strikes and the weapons used weren't clear.

Iran state news agency IRNA reported a military official in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, Brigadier General Mihan Dost, as saying loud sounds heard east of the city were the sound of air defenses intercepting what he called a "suspicious target" and that no damage was reported in the area.

Other Iranian news agencies had not reported any such strike and have concluded the sounds reported near Isfahan were the interception of one or more drones.

Israel's military and prime minister's office have not yet responded to NPR's request for comment.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed on social media that there is no damage to Iran's nuclear sites.

Meanwhile, Israel's hardline National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, wrote on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that Israel's latest apparent strike against Iran was "weak" and too limited.

Commercial flights continue in and out of Israel, and the country's Home Front Command system, which is responsible for issuing threat alerts to civilians during tense military times, didn't change its threat level.

In Iran, flights were temporarily grounded in the morning, but resumed just a couple of hours later.

The U.S. and other western allies had been urging Israel to forego a military strike to avoid a regional conflict springing out of the Israel-Hamas war .

Those concerns rose when an air strike – which Iran blamed on Israel – killed two Iranian military commanders in the country's consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1.

How Iran and Israel became archenemies

Iran said Sunday's attack on Israel was in response to that.

The region has been on the edge of wider conflict since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 240 others hostage, according to Israel. Israel's military campaign in response in Gaza has killed more than 33,000 people, according to Gaza health officials.

Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have traded frequent fire over the northern Israel border. Houthi militants, also backed by Iran, have been going after international commercial vessels passing through the Red Sea in recent months. The group's leaders claim they're targeting ships with links to Israel in response to the country's ongoing invasion of Gaza.
