PUT YOUR RV ON A BARGE AND CRUISE THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI RIVER

By deseret news , reed branson, scripps howard news service.

Robert and Ruth Hallisy of Dayton, Ohio, backed their RV into its campground slot here, hooked up to the water and electricity, sat back and floated away.

Literally. The Hallisys were in one of 59 recreational vehicles built for the road but now floating the waterways of middle America aboard one of the newest trends in tourism - river cruises on converted barges.

"It sounded like a Tom Sawyer adventure to me," said Ruth Hallisy, eagerly waiting for the barges to depart one recently day.

"I want to be Huck Finn," added her husband, Robert, to the amusement of fellow retirees waiting to board.

This tour, the largest to date for the New Orleans companies that started them two years ago, is breaking new ground in the travel industry.

Starting here on the Tennessee River, the 15-day cruise pushed north to the Ohio River, west to the Mississippi and then to New Orleans.

Periodically, those aboard stop for off-shore tours, such as a barbecue at Loretta Lynn's ranch in Bucksnort, Tenn., a swing through Graceland and Beale Street in Memphis, trips to Vicksburg and Natchez and ultimately a party in the French Quarter.

"It's kind of like sitting in a theater and watching the shoreline go by," says Bud Trembull of Little Torch Key, Fla., who was making a repeat trip. "There's no traffic. It's so peaceful."

Indeed, the travelers, their cats and dogs can relax in their lawn chairs, chatting while watching the autumn leaves pass by on a wooded bank.

The shore and river, ever changing, make each tour different. On occasion, says Trembull, they can glimpse deer, fowl and an abundance of other wildlife. When they're stopped, many set out fishing lines.

Moreover, travelers are witness to the workings of the powerful river, its pilots and vessels, as well as the intricate locks that lift and lower boats.

In part, the river cruises are modeled after similar cruises in Mexico in which RVs are loaded onto trains. This idea, though, came from the marriage of two companies.

Eddie Conrad has an established boat-towing company in New Orleans, Compass Marine. When an avid RV enthusiast approached Conrad and suggested parking RVs on top of barges, Conrad thought it sounded feasible, though odd.

Today, Creative World Travel - a New Orleans travel company that specializes in RV caravan tours - supplies the tour-seekers and Conrad's R.V. River Charters provides equipment and crew for the tour.

"It's a full hook-up campground and exceptionally clean," says Wagon Master Ralph Sanders, a longtime RV caravan leader. Sanders and five other tour leaders tend to the campers' needs and provide games and entertainment.

Conrad converted single-skinned oil barges (that now have largely been replaced by double-skinned barges) into floating campgrounds, 50 feet wide and 245 to 260 feet long.

The barges used to carry their petroleum cargo inside. Now, their cargo is alive and on top, so the company reinforced supports beneath the decks, poured a foot-thick bed of concrete on deck to create a level parking lot, and built into each hull a 10,000-gallon freshwater container and another 10,000-gallon sewage water container.

Then, for comfort, they installed electric and water hookups, a full kitchen, washers and dryers and safety precautions - such as a fence around the perimeter, life jackets and rafts and firefighting equipment.

For the relief of dogs and cats aboard, each barge has about a 4-foot-square patch of sod.

With about 16 feet between vehicles, campers have plenty of room to pull out awnings, hang colorful wind socks and lay out welcome mats.

Two towboats power the trip to New Orleans by the Hallisys.

Tour prices range from $945 to $4,490 and include the space for an RV, some meals and all the side-trips for two.

The two companies offer eight cruises, including a three-day trip from Port Isabel to Corpus Christi, a nine-day cruise along the Tennessee River between Florence, Ala., and Chattanooga, and a popular 10-day cruise into the Cajun country bayous of south Louisiana.

For information about RV barge cruises on the Mississippi, call Conrad's R.V. River Chaters at 800-256-6100. Each barge has full hookups and each RV has a 16 by 40 foot slot. Prices range from $945 to $4,600.

RV RIVER CHARTERS GIVES DIEHARDS THRILLS WITH FLOATING CAMPGROUNDS

As the unusual craft floated lazily down the Tennessee River, people in settlements near Chattanooga lined up on shore, waving excitedly, while pleasure boaters did double-takes and wondered if the hot summer sun had fried their brains.

No, it was what it seemed: Three barges, each 240 feet long, had been lashed together to carry 26 recreational vehicles of all shapes and sizes – the kind you usually see meandering down the highway or lined up in parks. Awnings were out on the RVs, as were little tables and plants sitting on Oriental rugs, and the RV occupants sat outside on lawn chairs, reading, talking, sipping cold drinks. Others bicycled on the deck or walked or played with their dogs and cats. Some just watched the tree-covered hills drift by.

This floating campground, 50 feet wide and a total of more than 700 feet long, was pushed by the Abbie C., a hard-working towboat (so called because a barge is properly called a “tow”). But what really made it go was the shared enthusiasm for the rambling RV lifestyle and the joy of hitting upon a new way to get someplace. For RVers, this is the latest find in their continuing quest for new travel experiences.

Many of the 55 travelers – most retired and ranging in age from 40 to 70 – have driven their vehicles to practically every state in the country. They have camped everywhere, from lush parks with water and electrical hookups to roadside pullovers where the only amenity was a wake-up call.

Audrienne Vander Pyl of Fort Myers Beach said she and her husband Bob “had run out of things to do. We had been everywhere and done everything, but we had never been on a barge.”

Certainly not with an RV. This cruising campground is a new deal. RV River Charters, a New Orleans company that books the trips, has sent groups along the Mississippi River from Louisiana, and those trips continue. But this is the first Tennessee River cruise. Officials say theirs are the only RV barge cruises in the world.

Campers on this trip pay about $3,500 per vehicle for a 12-day cruise along inland waterways from Mobile, Ala., up to Chattanooga, Tenn., then back to Guntersville, Ala., where the RVs are unloaded and driven away to myriad places.

Eddie Conrad, president of Compass Marine Services, which owns the barges, said they were specially refitted, then certified safe by the U.S. Coast Guard.

For their fare, passengers get RV parking spaces and hookups for water, sewage and electricity. Meals ashore are provided when the barge stops. Passengers travel by day, tying up at night and sleeping in their RVs aboard the barge.

On the barge deck, where rigs lined up at an angle, several RV-ers bragged of other perks: great gas mileage and somebody else steers. Few failed to point out the large boxes with grass growing in them – dog toilets for the five canines aboard. A couple of cats condescended to join the cruise as well.

Among the humans, time spent on the road (or river) ranged from all year (full-timers, no other home) to a few weeks. They came from all over the country and retired from a variety of occupations, with the military amply represented. Several couples had been wed for about 50 years.

Ray and Laura Gaines are full-time RVers who have been married 47 years. A retired Army captain, Ray Gaines and Conrad own RV River Charters.

“We never get to go anywhere,” Ray quipped, sitting in their RV home on the barge as it floated about 10 miles downriver from Chattanooga. “We stay at home all the time.”

Turning serious, he explained how they were able – emotionally – to sell their stationary home in La Palma, Calif., and hit the road full-time 17 years ago: “An RV is compact. We don’t need that big house. We’re not in that show-and-tell way of life. Laura and I know that your security is in yourself.”

Life aboard the barge is much like life elsewhere for the RVers, a combination of fun and ease.

Perhaps that is why no one expressed regret that the trip would end. They all knew that when they drove away from the barge, they would pick up where they left off.

Besides, most already had collected addresses from their fellow passengers, giving them a whole new set of friendly places to visit.

RV LIFE

The Silver Gypsy: Ye Olde Muddy Campground

' src=

This story about very unique camping on the Mississippi River was published in 1995.  It was an amazing trip and I was blessed to experience it.

“Gentlemen (and ladies), start your engines.”

Like the pros they were, twenty-seven RVers scaled the levee on the Intercoastal Waterway at New Orleans, LA, crossed the ramp, parked on custom-built barges, and plugged into full hookups.  Excited Becky Thatchers and Huck Finns were on their way to a 450-mile modern version of a Mark Twain adventure on the Mississippi River.

Captain Ray Gaines of RV River Charters, Inc. of New Orleans, greeted us,  “Welcome to the most unique campground in the whole world.  Put your rig on true ‘cruise control.’  Sit back, relax, and let the world go by.'”

b2ap3_thumbnail_RV-BARGE.jpg

Life jackets waved from outside mirrors.  Preservers, fire-fighting equipment and alarms were appropriately spaced along the rail.  If necessary, a black button on the fire alarm would immediately kill the electricity to all barges.

A “bow thrust” was guided via remote control from the tugboat, LaGonda, our guardian angel.  Capt. Gaines assured us, “The water is never more than one-quarter-mile wide.  The depth is approximately twelve feet and the barge is nine feet high.  If we sink, we’ll be up to our necks in about three feet of water.”

We nested into our own RV spaces.  Flowers and plants held carpeting in place beneath awnings unrolled for shade.  No matter where we were, how many miles we traveled, what time of day it was, or what the weather did, we retreated into our own RV homes to sleep, eat, rest, entertain, or hide from the world.

Passing us as we progressed eastward along the Intercoastal Waterway, hard-working “I know I can” tugs pushed as many as thirty-six barges at a time.  Shrimp boats glided by with their arms folded.  Oil drilling equipment reached for the sky.  Swamped relics of bygone days grew rust and flowers.

Workers put tools down in surprise and shouted, “Where y’all goin’?”

At dusk we touched shore at Houma to pick up catered mufalettas, giant Cajun sandwiches filled with spicy seafood.

Only the hum of the engines, the 80 kW generator, and the night sounds disturbed the quiet of the wee hours.  A pale moon disappeared as the mist crawled over the railing along with the ghost of Jean Lafitte, renowned pirate from the days of yore.  Was he returning for the treasure legend says is buried in the bayou?  Only the shadows knew.

The Cajun Man, “Black” Guidry, appeared in the morning mist to take us through the purple hyacinth plants and the Spanish moss-covered trees to see the land where he was born and watch the herons, cranes, and egrets fish in the swamp.

He called up the alligators.  “They can’t see very well.  They come to the sound of my voice and the engine.”  As though on cue, an alligator startled everyone by leaping out of the water to snatch the offered chicken fat from a pole.

b2ap3_thumbnail_ACTIVITIES.jpg

“Drop anchor at Whiskey Bay and wait for the golden limousines.”  School buses found their way through the bayous of Acadiana where Cajuns are descendants of the Acadians exiled from Nova Scotia in l755 and immortalized by Longfellow in his poem, “Evangeline.”

b2ap3_thumbnail_Ms-Barge-Trip.jpg

A traditional Cajun band played the “Cajun Two-step” for the young at heart.  Outside, watching a glowing sunset beyond the bayou, others danced to the tune of lively mosquitoes.

The tug guided us through the fifteen-foot raise in the New River Locks and on into the great muddy Mississippi.  On-board activities included skits, an authentic Cajun storyteller; a juggling clown, and original songs.

On a land tour near St. Francisville, Richard Barnes, the owner of the Antebellum mansion, Greenwood, was our host.  “This is my home, please sit on the furniture and walk on the rugs.”  The house burned in l960.  Mr. Barnes’ family bought the charred remains and built an exact duplicate.

The Myrtles, an l850s plantation home built on sacred Indian burial ground, is authenticated by the Smithsonian Institution to be the most haunted house in America.  The voice of our hostess became highpitched and excited as she related ghostly activities she herself witnessed.  She made believers of us.

b2ap3_thumbnail_CONFUSION.jpg

Touring the USS Kidd and Nautical Center at Baton Rouge prompted wartime stories.  Known as “The Pirate of the Pacific,” the USS Kidd still flies the skull and crossbones.

At New Orleans, we docked beside the Riverwalk amid a party atmosphere with tugs whistling and The Natchez Paddlewheeler playing our song, “King of the Road,” on their calliope.  Charlie’s Jazz Band played us ashore with, “The Saints Go Marching in.”  A Strutter in gold shoes, red pants, black tails and a fancy umbrella, led a second line dance to catered bowls of seafood gumbo and bread pudding with hot sauce.

Our bus-tour hostess explained wrap-around balconies, row houses, shotgun houses with camelbacks, and great family tombs built above ground in the cemeteries.  New Orleans receives sixty-six inches of rain per year and sits three to ten feet below sea level.  This causes grave problems in the “Cities of the Dead.”

With three-day passes for buses and trolley rides, we descended on the French Quarter.  Cafe du Monde was the place to people watch and sin outrageously with Cafe au lait and beignets (bin-YAY), a square, hot pastry excessive with powdered sugar.

Jazz players with practiced hands beckoned tips.  Horses clopped proudly ahead of decorated carriages.  Drivers shouted historical data.  Sidewalk artists painted local scenes and created portraits with magic fingers.  General Jackson’s statue guarded St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest active cathedral in the US.

And then Bourbon Street…honky tonk and traditional Dixieland jazz…no matter the time of day or night.  New Orleans was the Court of Two Sisters, Pete Fountain, Pat O’Brien’s, the skyline at night and more..so much more..but it was time to go.

We gathered at eight a.m. on the tenth morning to a whispered prayer, “Please, Lord, don’t let it rain on the cinnamon rolls.”

Capt. Gaines said his goodbyes with, “Thanks for letting us ‘barge’ into your lives.”

Addresses, invitations, and hugs were exchanged.  We were strangers no more.  We departed, California to Maine, Washington to Florida, “til we meet again.”

Hope you enjoyed this fuel-free RV trip on the Great Mississippi River.   I could find no evidence that anything like it has been offered in several years.   God Bless and have a safe and Happy Fourth of July.

Couples take RV barge trip down river

Published 12:00 am Thursday, October 12, 2000

NATCHEZ – The experience has been described as somewhere between floating down the Mississippi River with Huck Finn and taking a cruise aboard the Love Boat. And if you happened to see the river barges loaded with motor homes and RVs docked under the bluffs Wednesday and Thursday, you’d understand why.

&uot;It’s a good way to go,&uot; Russell Clegg said. &uot;You’ve got your (own) pillow with you.&uot;

This was the first &uot;cruising campground&uot; excursion for Clegg and his wife, Ramona. The retired couple from Osh Kosh, Wis., has been camping since 1961.

Email newsletter signup

&uot; We’ve lived near the Mississippi River all our lives, and we thought it would be a great way to see it,&uot; Clegg said.

Natchez was just one stop on the 17-day cruise that began in Guntersville, Ala., and will end in New Orleans.

Aboard the double barge carrying 26 RVs are 52 passengers and three staff members, including husband-and-wife directors Don and Jan Retif.

&uot;I always tell the people I don’t do ice carvings at midnight; I’ll be in bed,&uot; Jan said, laughing.

But what the floating campground lacks in luxuries, it makes up in friendliness.

&uot;I guarantee you there is more socializing on this barge than you’ll see on the Delta Queen,&uot; said Relief Captain Tim Griesheimer.

Maybe that’s why some couples — known as &uot;alumni&uot; — return year after year to try one of the six different barge cruises offered through RV River Charters and Creative World Rallies and Caravans.

&uot;We just stay on vacation all the time,&uot; Captain Kaylor Jones said.

April Fools

Happy April 1st everyone.

Maybe one day they’ll work out a fast and fun way to take your rv to hawaii, 8 responses.

We actually considered buying one of the Rollerboat barges to tow our bus behind us when we moved into a boat two years ago. I shared my research on these – they are actually a real thing: https://www.technomadia.com/2017/04/moving-to-water-so-what-about-the-bus/

BTW – a company used to do Mississippi River tours by barge for RVers too!

– Chris

Herman and Helen’s in the California Delta used to offer this barge service. For real. We used to dream about doing that when we had a 24 foot fifth wheel.

April Fools! Love it

The trip from Hawaii to LA with a westerly wind could be called the Pineapple Express. ???

Love it. I used to drive my Vw bug onto a plane in England and drive it off again in Switzerland. I sometimes wonder how much “progress ” we are losing. Patricia Smith

When it was still allowed, we boarded (drove our RV) onto a barge with 2 other Escapee couples, in Alabama. Went through locks, up the Tombigbee, into the Ohio and then down the Mississippi! Cannot remember the entire routes, sometimes we tied up along the river, sometimes in a city. What a marvelous adventure. Shortly after, the Coast Guard shut down the company, saying it was not safe as a passenger line. We ended up in New Orleans for a few more days of fun and partying. Anyone else remember this trip??

Ha Ha. I imagined everyone in the desert partying with a bunch of blow up palm trees and pools. Pineapples and drinks on the side.

LOL you had me going there for a min. I thought how awesome till I seen the April fools at the end…………Too funny

Specifically, but without limitation, when using any of the Intellectual Property, the Licensee must comply with all laws relating to intellectual property in force, including marking requirements. At the request of Licensor, and without compensation to Licensee, Licensee shall promptly do such acts and execute, acknowledge, and deliver all such papers as may be necessary or desirable, in the sole discretion of Licensor, to obtain, maintain, protect, and/or vest in Licensor the entire right, title, and interest in and to any Intellectual Property; including rendering such assistance as Licensor may request in any litigation, Patent and Trademark Office proceeding, or other proceeding. All use of any Intellectual Property by Licensee on any good shall inure to the benefit and be the property of Licensor.

B. The Licensee may use the Intellectual Property only in connection with goods manufactured, distributed, and sold by or for, and/or services provided by or for, the Licensee in accordance with the specifications, directions, and processes furnished to the Licensor by the Licensee or its representatives and agents from time to time; and, the quality of all goods sold under the Intellectual Property must be satisfactory to the Licensor or as specified by the Licensor. The Licensee must furnish to the Licensor, upon request, with samples of goods sold or distributed, and/or examples of how Licensee provides services, using one or more of the Intellectual Property. In addition, in order to assure that the development, manufacture, appearance, quality, and distribution of the Product and/or Service are consonant with the Intellectual Property used to identify it or them, Licensor retains the right to participate at each stage of development of any Product or any other Material Requiring Approval and to approve or disapprove of any development, manufacture, appearance, quality, and/or distribution.

C. Whenever the Licensee uses any of the Intellectual Property, in advertising or in connection with goods that it sells or distributes, the Intellectual Property must be displayed in accordance with specifications and directions furnished by the Licensor to the Licensee, from time to time. Licensee shall use upon or in connection with the Product, and/or Service, where a United States Federal Trademark Registration has been obtained, the symbol ®. Article IV: Assignment and Subleasing

A. This Agreement and the License are personal to the Licensee, and the Licensee may not assign or sublicense any of the rights granted to the Licensee under this Agreement without the advance written consent of the Licensor, which consent may be withheld for any reason whatsoever. Any purported assignment or sublicense by the Licensee (or by operation of law) that is not approved in writing by the Licensor will be null and void and of no legal effect whatsoever.

B. This Agreement may be assigned by the Licensor to any person or entity whatsoever.

Article V: Licensorship and Protection of Intellectual Property

The Licensee acknowledges the Licensor’s exclusive right, title, and interest in the Intellectual Property and will not at any time do or cause to be done any act or thing contesting or in any way impairing or tending to impair any part of such right, title, and interest. Specifically, but without limitation, the Licensee will at no time adopt or use any word or mark that is likely to be similar to or confusing with the Intellectual Property. In connection with use of the Intellectual Property, the Licensee will not in any manner represent that it has ownership of the Intellectual Property or any registration thereof, and the Licensee acknowledges that use of the Intellectual Property will not create in the Licensee’s favor any right, title, or interest in or to the Intellectual Property, but all uses of the Intellectual Property by the Licensee, including any goodwill generated by such use, will inure to the benefit of the Licensor. The Licensor will be responsible for trademark registrations and must use commercially reasonable efforts to file, prosecute, and maintain all trademark and related registrations and registration applications for the Intellectual Property.

Article VI: Infringement

Only the Licensor shall have the right, but not the obligation, to prosecute any infringement of the Intellectual Property. The Licensee must promptly inform the Licensor of any infringement that comes to the Licensee’s attention, regardless of whether the Licensee elects to prosecute the infringement.

B. Licensee shall promptly notify the Licensor of any claim, in writing; and, Licensee shall cooperate with the Licensor in the defense of any claim.

Article IX: Term and Termination

A. The term of the License will commence on the date of this Agreement and will continue in effect for a period of one (1) year. At the expiration of the initial one-year term of the License, or any renewal thereof, the License will be renewed for a period of one year beginning on the date of the expiration of the prior term, unless either the Licensor or the Licensee gives written notice of termination to the other not later than thirty (30) days before the expiration of the prior term. If notice of termination is given, the License will terminate on the expiration of the existing term.

B. The Licensor may, at its option, terminate the License prior to the end of its term by written notice to the Licensee if Licensee violates any of the terms of this Agreement.

C. Termination or expiration of the License will not in any way operate to impair or destroy any of the Licensor’s or the Licensee’s preexisting rights or remedies, either at law or in equity.

D. Immediately following the termination or expiration of the License, all rights granted to Licensee hereunder shall automatically revert to Licensor and Licensee shall execute any and all documents evidencing such automatic reversion; and, the Licensee must cease and desist from all use of the Intellectual Property in any way and deliver to the Licensor all material and papers on which the Intellectual Property appear that are in the Licensee’s possession.

E. Licensee shall, within three (3) months after such expiration or termination, deliver to Licensor a complete and accurate statement indicating that all existing inventories of Product have been destroyed and all references to Intellectual Property have been removed from Licensee’s properties.

The New & Improved Way to Barge Cruise

BargeLady Impressionniste

A few British people had the idea to buy old WWII-era cargo boats and transform them into luxury floating hotels. Now, the barge owners have created their own niche market, with a global rating system and fantastic crews to guide you. The owners of the barges are often the operators – possibly your Captain or Chef. And they take care when hiring the rest of their crew, because their crew becomes like a family during the season. The rating system for barges refers to the cabin size and luxury expectations for each barge.

  • Boutique: This cruise is about the experiences, not the amenities. Cabin sizes are smaller, but that won’t matter to you because you’re more interested in the authentic onshore participation in French life. We do not have any boutique level barge cruises on our website. Please call our agents if this experience interests you: 800-578-1479.
  • First Class: The cabins get a little bigger in this category, and the experiences get more eclectic. You’ll enjoy delicious meals onboard, paired with fantastic wines. To see First Class barges, check out the Luciole and L’Art de Vivre .
  • Deluxe: Deluxe cabins are spacious, usually with your choice between queen or twin beds. Onboard amenities could include a hot tub. Deluxe barges on our website include the Rendez-vous , L’Impressioniste and the Shannon Princess .
  • Ultra-Deluxe: The premier level of luxury, service and accommodations. Onboard amenities could include an open kitchen or grand piano. The highest quality of cuisine and wine will be served with every meal. Our Ultra-Deluxe barge is the Prosperite , which is an 8-passenger barge available for charter only.

Where Do Barge Cruises Go?

Parts of Continental Europe have very elaborate canal systems, originally built in the 1600’s to transport produce, wine, and other products between villages. Alongside the canals are towpaths, intended to help pull boats of grain but now are perfect for morning strolls. During your 6-night cruise, your barge will only travel 30-50 miles. Instead of hitting as many sites as possible like a river cruise would do, barges allow you a more intimate look at a small region.

There are barges that travel in the UK, Ireland, France, Holland, Italy and Germany. On our website, we feature three cruises that travel in Southern Burgundy, two in Northern Burgundy, and one in central Ireland. Even though these barges are covering the same region, they’re itineraries are each distinct. For the most part, the itinerary consists of morning cruising down the canal, then getting off after lunch and exploring a nearby village or town. Your barge will not be moving while you are sleeping.

How Do I Choose a Barge?

The rating system is a good place to start. Consider your travel preferences: what level of luxury do you expect from a hotel stay? If you don’t care about the room because you’re all about getting out there and seeing the destination, a Boutique or First-Class barge would fit your style. If you would be content to spend the entire week lounging while someone pours you continual glasses of wine, and demanded the highest quality cabin with space comparable to a hotel suite… you’re definitely Ultra-Deluxe, but could probably survive the Deluxe barges, if you had to. (I’m only teasing. The Deluxe barges are amazing!)

Another item to consider: how many people are traveling? Is it just you? (The Luciole has two single cabins, with no single supplements!) Is it a romantic getaway just for two? Do you have a few couples with whom you like to travel? Could this be the vacation where you take many family members, to celebrate your retirement, a special birthday or your 50th wedding anniversary? Two of our barges are charter only, meaning you can’t just book one cabin (unless you really want the 8-passenger Ultra-Deluxe Prosperite all to yourselves!). The charter-only barges are 6 or 8 passengers. You can charter the larger barges as well, or, if you don’t mind other passengers being on board, only book the number of cabins you need.

Your interests should always play a part in deciding which cruise is right for you. Do you properly ‘geek out’ over Irish history and culture? The Shannon Princess will take you to ancient villages and castles (some haunted), and an authentic Guinness pub. Are you a modern ‘foodie’? Take the Rendezvous . Are you a more continental ‘foodie’? Try L’Art de Vivre ! Do you like to bike? The crew on L’Impressionniste will escort you on or provide biking plans for you to explore the French countryside. Interested in European history or a solo traveler? We’d recommend the Luciole .

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

  • Dates & Prices

This short Moscow tour will give you a true taste of the history, culture and incomparable urban vibe that define one of the world’s largest metropolises. In just three days, this Moscow itinerary takes in all the most iconic sights of this attraction-packed destination. After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

If you only have a few days to spend in Moscow, this tour will ensure you make the most of your time in the city. Let the experts navigate you through this complex and occasionally overwhelming capital, giving you plenty of time to soak up the city’s most unmissable attractions.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
