St. Pius X CYO Basketball Travel Team Information & Frequently Asked Questions

Cyo travel basketball – frequently asked questions (faqs).

E-mail:  [email protected]

In regards to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions concerning CYO Travel Basketball – Here are some answers to the most popular questions.  Any further question please email  [email protected]

  Q: When are tryouts?

St. Pius X CYO Travel Basketball Tryout Dates

Registration for Travel Team tryouts is REQUIRED.  To register for Travel Team tryouts, click (this link is inactive)  HERE

Q: Who can try out?

A: For the Upcoming CYO Travel Basketball season, CYO of Nassau Suffolk will again be enforcing the residency requirement this year (Please note that there are now eligibility requirements per CYO for NEW players. Existing CYO travel players are grandfathered in)  NEW Basketball players must meet one of the following requirements in order to tryout and play travel basketball at St. Pius.

The rules that CYO will be adhering to are as follows to allow a child to tryout and play on a St. Pius X travel team:

  • Returning St. Pius X CYO Travel Basketball player (if you played on a St. Pius X travel team during 2017/2018 you are approved to tryout and play, except if a temporary waiver was issued)
  • Family is a Parishioner of St. Pius in good standing for prior two years
  • Family is not a parishioner of St. Pius, but lives within St. Pius X parish zoning ( Click Here )
  • Lives in a parish area with no program - this affects a small portion of north Plainview zoned for a Woodbury parish where no program exists.

If none of the above applies to you, you must go to your resident parish to tryout for their team (Our Lady of Mercy in Hicksville, St. Martin in Bethpage and St. Killian’s in Farmingdale).  If there's no team for you to play, we may request a waiver from CYO. See note below from their website

What's a waiver? It is the philosophy of CYO that ALL participants play in the parish in which they reside. However, due to extenuating circumstances (no program, closed programs, etc...) this many not always be possible. Waivers are required for any participants that are playing in a parish program other than the one in which they presently reside or for any other condition that does not adhere to these policies (i.e. gender, grade level, interscholastic, etc.). All waivers are strictly evaluated by the Eligibility Committee under the rules interpretation set forth.

Waivers granted for other sports (volleyball) do not carry over to basketball.

If none of the above applies, you will not be eligible to tryout for St. Pius X Travel Basketball, as CYO will not approve a waiver and your placement on the team. In addition, CYO will not grant a waiver if there is room in a team of your resident parish and/or if cuts are made in a team you for which you are asking to play.

Additional zoning questions, tryout requirements or waiver questions can be directed to CYO – either the Compliance Specialist or the Zone 5 Coordinator and they will explain the travel policies.

All Parish Boundary Maps can be here – CYO Parish Boundary Maps .

Q: When does the season start?

A: The travel season starts in October for the Girls and in November for the Boys.  Practices start in September for all.  When the team is assembled the coaches will work with the St. Pius Coordinators to set up a time slot.  The home games and practices will be on that day and time.  Practices and games are typically 1 day per week.  Your home time slot will be used for home games.  Away games can be during the week or weekend at any time.  A season is 12 games – 6 home and 6 away.

Q: Do we have to try out if we are only interested in intramurals?

A: No the tryouts are to form a travel team that will play against other towns across Long Island.  This will be a competitive program with standings, referees and the keeping of the score.  If you are not interested in travel, signups for the intramural season will be in early June.

Q: What is the commitment level?

A: The goal is to make a competitive team.  It will be expected that you will make all practices and games and adhere to the St. Pius CYO Philosophy.

Q: If we try out and don’t make the team can we still play in the intramural program?

A: Yes, the intramural program will run the same as every year.  No standings, no playoffs.

Q: How many Travel teams will we have for the different age groups?

A: This will be determined by the number of kids that show up for tryouts, the level of talent and the availability of coaches and gym time. Currently our program offers boys and girls from 4 th grade through High School the ability to play travel basketball.

Q: How far are the away games?

A: The schedule is not set up but we generally play the neighboring towns.

Q: Can I play travel and intramurals?

A: Yes, many children do both. The goal of the intramural program is to teach and have fun. The travel program is for the more competitive level players, but many travel players use the intramural program to improve their skills.

Frequently Asked Questions Basketball

Frequently asked questions.

St. Edward CYO hosts travel basketball programs for girls and boys in grades 3 thru high school and even CYO alum in college and beyond.  The program start date varies for girls and boys and for various age groups. The schedule for the 2023-2024 season is as follows…

  • Who is eligible to play St. Edward CYO travel basketball?

A child must either be a parishioner of St. Edward the Confessor church (located on Jackson Ave in Syosset)  or  reside within the St. Edward parish boundaries (or reside in the boundaries of an adjacent parish that does not host a CYO travel basketball program). To see the St. Edward boundary map visit: https://cyoli.org/parish-boundary-maps .  Note, Jericho and Woodbury addresses are eligible to play at St. Edward CYO.  If a child resides in Hicksville, Plainview and Syosset addresses south of Northern State Parkway only CYO Long Island (CYOLI) central office can determine eligibility to play at St. Edward ( https://cyoli.org/ ).

  • How do I register a child for St. Edward’s CYO travel basketball?

Click the registration link on the main www.stedwardscyo.org webpage, which will take to the sportsengine registration site. Login to your sportsengine account, select the child you want to register and proceed with registration. If you want to register more than 1 child, repeat the process for each child. If you do not have a sportsengine account, please create an account and then complete registration.

Everyone MUST register in advance of tryouts. ONLY registered players will receive email communications about tryout dates, times and locations and ONLY registered players will be permitted to tryout (walk-ins are not permitted to tryout). The registration fee of $275   is fully  refundable, including any processing fees, for any player that is not selected for a travel team following tryouts. You do NOT need to purchase the added protection plan.

  • Is a uniform included in the registration fee?

No, a uniform is not included in the registration fee. There is a separate fee for the uniforms, which each player will order through a specific third-party on-line retailer. Coaches will provide instructions to purchase uniforms AFTER travel teams are selected.

If you have last year’s uniform, you can wear it again this year and not have pay the uniform cost. A player is only required to purchase a uniform jersey and matching shorts, however other branded gear will be available in the online store.  Note: CYOLI has very specific rules when it comes to uniform numbers and CANNOT  contain the numbers 6, 7, 8, or 9, so uniform numbers will likely be designated by each coach.

  • Is CYO travel basketball competitive?

Yes, CYO travel basketball is competitive. CYOLI hosts A/B/C divisions for teams in grades 5th – 12th, with “A” being highly competitive.  Each coach, in consultation with the St. Edward CYO Travel Program Coordinator, has the ability to decide which division to register their team in. Teams in grades 3rd – 4th do not have different divisions and plays with modified rules to account for the fact that players in these grades are still developing skills and learning rules of the game.  Accordingly, players can usually find a division that is best suited to their skill level. However, travel basketball at all levels is a commitment. The success of each team and the program as a whole depends on all coaches and players committing to attending weekly practice and weekend game(s) throughout the season.

  • Is every child who registers guaranteed a roster spot on a St. Edward CYO travel basketball team?

St. Edward CYO has a goal to provide as many girls and boys as possible the chance to play travel basketball. However, there is no guarantee that every child who registers will be selected to a team. Ultimately, the number of players who can participate is often determined by the number of adults who volunteer to coach a team, which in turn determines whether A, B and/or C level teams that St. Edward CYO can form at each grade level. So, the more adults who volunteer to coach, the more teams we can create, and then the more girls and boys we can have participate. Please consider volunteering to coach a team.

  • Can my child play on the same team as their friends?

Maybe. Team selection is decided by the St. Edward Travel Program Commissioner with assistance from other board members and coaches. Team selection criteria is primarily determined by a player’s skill such that a team can be registered to play in the appropriate division and each player has the opportunity to contribute and have a positive experience. Additionally, St. Edward CYO allows/encourages players who want to play on the same team with their friends to join together on their own, before tryouts are held, and form a team to ensure they are on the same team. In such cases, St. Edward requires the team have a complete 10 player roster and a coach already selected for their team. Otherwise, registered players are invited to an open tryout and teams are selected based on results from the tryout.

  • Where and when are practices and games held?

Practice days and times are decided after tryouts are completed and teams are selected. Practice schedules are prioritized based on coach and gym availability.

  • Who coaches St. Edward CYO travel basketball teams and can I volunteer?

Travel teams are either coached by a parent volunteer(s) or a paid coach, if a parent volunteer is not available. The fee for a paid coach is in addition to the $275 registration fee and is determined between the coach and parents.

Any parent interested in volunteering for a head coach or assistant coach role should reach out to the boys or girls Travel Program Coordinator, respectively.  CYO Long Island requires all coaches to complete training in advance of being eligible to coach.  Please register for these courses @  https://cyoli.org/registration-for-coaches-orientation and http://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/reg_list2.cfm?theorgid=17044&theme=0 .  Completion of both courses is required and both courses are a one-time requirement and applicable to all CYO sports.

  • Can a team decide when it will play its games? .

CYOLI, which is the parent organization that administers the CYO program across Long Island, is in charge of scheduling all games. Games are typically played on Saturday or Sunday.  Game schedules are determined primarily by gym availability at St. Edward and at the other parish gyms St. Edward will play away games in. Coaches can make limited requests to restrict certain calendar days from being scheduled (e.g., coach has a known conflict at the time their team registration is submitted to CYOLI), but CYOLI cannot always accommodate these requests.  For this reason, CYOLI recommends each team have the support of an Assistant Coach.

  • Where will a team play its games?

Typically, half of the games will be “home games” and played at St. Edward gym (or a SCSD district gym) and the other half will be “away games” and played at other parish gyms in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. CYO Long Island does make every effort to minimize the travel distance to “away games”.

Travel Basketball

This competitive basketball program is open to players ready to take their basketball skills to the next level. Players must try out for this sport each season, and selection to a team is not guaranteed. Players must participate in one full tryout and, if possible, all other tryout dates for a fair assessment of each player's skill, effort, attitude, and teamwork. The focus of this program is to expand the knowledge of basketball fundamentals and improve individual and cooperative basketball skills.  In addition, we aim to teach the proper technique for shooting, dribbling, defense, and rebounding while strengthening the player's particular skill set.   Player commitment is essential, and traveling to Parishes in Nassau and Suffolk counties is required.

Players selected to a Travel basketball team are welcome to participate in the Intramural Basketball program. Players interested in participating in both programs must complete a registration for the Travel program and a separate registration for the Intramural program.

AAU, Travel & CYO Basketball Games

Youth basketball games for $50.00.

STACK Basketball in Mahwah, New Jersey has multiple teams at each grade level that play AAU, Town Travel and CYO basketball teams throughout the year. Teams come from all over North New Jersey, Rockland and Orange County New York to play matchup games vs STACK based on skill level.

STACK and the visiting teams always do our best to make fair matchups to be sure all players get good competitive games. STACK’s goal is to work directly with opposing teams to eliminate high league and tournament costs by just charging the referee and scorekeeper while STACK provides the facility.

The STACK Basketball Program has multiple teams at each grade consisting of all skill levels. Our teams get team games, practices and skills training classes up to 7 days per week in our Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter AAU Basketball seasons. We are always looking to give our players more opportunities to get in the gym so scheduling our own games allows us to do that. We take a lot of pride in providing a fair and safe youth basketball game experience for our STACK player and the opposing teams we play.

Youth Basketball Game Rules

  • Running 18 min halves (stop last minute).
  • Certified Referee & Scorekeeper.
  • 5-10 min warm-up before games.

Girls basketball: Former CYO quartet now starring for different teams as playoffs begin

cyo travel basketball

The improvisational skills were on display, as was a rhythmic rapport. Without a detailed script to follow, the group created their own concepts in the moment and adjusted as they went along. Whenever someone changed direction, the others pivoted seamlessly and kept pace.

Jules Belmonte and Caitlin Robertson would make the directorial edits afterwards.

This became a favorite pastime of theirs during hangouts, acting out comedic skits and organizing the footage on iMovie.

“We were making fake YouTube videos,” Simone Pelish said with a laugh. “We would record ourselves talking about silly stuff or making up funny scenes. Except we didn’t actually have a YouTube account.”

They were 11-year-olds, after all. Those clips never were posted online, just shared and chuckled at amongst the friends, for whom it still is a running joke several years later.

And people thought they were quiet.

Forever memory: Lovgren, who has cerebral palsy, makes Highland basketball debut

“Everyone really was quiet most of the time; we seemed shy,” Blythe McQuade acknowledged. “But it was never awkward for us because we’d have team dinners or hang out and suddenly it would get loud and animated.”

Or creative and goofy.

That was the tenor of the clique, who became friends as elementary school kids while starring for the Poughkeepsie-based St. Martin de Porres CYO girls basketball team.

Their easy chemistry and flow were evident on the court, too. The squad excelled for three years together, including winning a Dutchess County championship in 2018.

“We were a great team, and everyone was close,” said Belmonte, the defensive maven of a sixth-grade squad that lost only once. “Even back then, you could already see how talented some of these girls were. We had something special.”

Robertson, Pelish and Belmonte became best friends in middle school and McQuade was beloved as “our little sister.” (Because she’s a year younger. It wasn’t meant in reference to her being 10 inches shorter than Pelish and Robertson. Or was it?)

Of the 11-member CYO team, it was those four who stuck with basketball and shined at the scholastic level. They now are upperclassmen leading their high school teams in the playoffs.

Belmonte and Robertson are key players for a Roy C. Ketcham team that is favored to win its second Section 1 title in three seasons. McQuade helped guide rebuilding Spackenkill into the Section 9 playoffs, and Pelish headlines an Our Lady of Lourdes squad that seems positioned to win its first Section 9 championship.

“Our real goal wasn’t really to win as much as it was teaching them the basics and hoping they enjoyed the sport,” said Martin McQuade, who worked alongside Biagio Belmonte in coaching their daughters on the CYO team. “To see them flourishing now, and growing up to be good people, it’s the most rewarding feeling.”

Robertson and Belmonte still are teammates, so their closeness is in friendship and proximity. But as a quartet, they aren’t often all together anymore, with conflicting schedules and teenage life interrupting. Still, they all keep in touch through text and social media, and each is rooting hard for the others as the basketball season winds down.

It’s “so cool,” Robertson said, seeing how much they each have grown, and their games developed, while still having vivid memories (and some videos) of themselves from several years ago.

“As much time as we spent together as kids, having sleepovers and joking around,” Belmonte said, “these friendships are gonna last.”

Then, now and soon to come

The dominance of that sixth-grade team surprised even the players a bit. Despite losing a teammate to injury, St. Martin de Porres rolled against local opponents, even toppling some teams with players who now are stars.

“We were shorthanded and faced tough teams, but we persevered and got better throughout the season,” Blythe McQuade said. “I didn’t realize how good we were until we made that run.”

The coaches did, though. Martin McQuade said it was clear from early on that Pelish was a rare talent. He thought, even then, that she would become a high-level college player.

Robertson, too, had impressive athleticism and coordination. She now is a versatile 6-foot wing who has twice been named a Journal All-Star and has drawn college interest.

“People would ask me, ‘Is Simone really that good?’ Absolutely,” he recalled. “‘Think she can play Division I?’ I’m 100% sure.”

The 6-foot guard, who is committed to the University of Miami, recently eclipsed 2,000 career points and set the Lourdes career scoring record.

Belmonte, Martin McQuade said, had “tremendous leaping ability” and innate defensive instincts. Those skills still are paramount in her game as a point guard now, contributing to one of the best defensive teams in Section 1.

Blythe was a fast learner and a natural facilitator who utilized her quickness to help create for teammates.

They ran an uptempo system and McQuade and Belmonte often pressed the backcourt and pushed in transition. It helped, of course, having a couple tall-for-their-age standouts up front.

The girls’ admiration of Maddy Siegrist, Blythe said, was an immediate inspiration and her success ― at Lourdes, then Villanova before the WNBA ― made them take basketball more seriously.

It’s “fun” to consider where they are now, “and then remember ourselves back then,” Pelish said. “We came up together, learned the fundamentals, and now we’re at three different schools doing well. That’s awesome to think about.”

It seems long ago in their basketball careers, Belmonte said, but many of the memories still are so vivid. Like the uniform “looking huge on Blythe,” Robertson quipped.

“Not a lot has changed there,” Blythe said with a grin. “I was about 4’8” back then and I’m only 5’2” now.”

Soccer was, and still is, her primary sport. She has become a prolific scorer and playmaker, helping Spackenkill become a perennial contender. She might play that sport collegiately. On the court, though, she remains a vocal leader, ball-handler and distributor.

The Spartans struggled through most of the regular season but did clinch a playoff berth in Section 9 Class B. That, Blythe said, is something the team will build on.

“We’re improving and working toward the future,” she said, “but I really think Lourdes and Ketcham are gonna do big things. I’d love to see them both go far.”

If they do get far enough, there’s a possibility of those teams meeting in a Class AAA regional final in two weeks.

Robertson and Belmonte are part of a senior core that delivered Ketcham its first section title in 2022 and just completed, perhaps, its best regular season this winter.

“Everyone is expecting us to do well and that drives me even more to want to accomplish it,” said Robertson, whose team is seeded first in Section 1 Class AAA. “We’re confident in ourselves.”

Lourdes is the No. 2 seed in its Section 9 bracket but is undefeated against teams within the region.

Their magical CYO season did end with an eventual loss in a regional final, which Pelish said still stings.

“I’ve never won it all and that’s part of the reason I want this so bad,” she said. “I think we’ve got a real shot. Everyone is locked in, we’re playing well off each other, and the chemistry is great.”

In this instance, though, we’ll all be watching.

Interim Head of School Deacon Hicks Armor and Athletics Director Brian Gill have announced the hiring of Matt Matoh as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Notre Dame High School. Coach Matoh comes to Notre Dame High School with extensive collegiate and high school coaching experience, including having served at Baylor School as an Assistant Coach of the varsity program, and Head Middle School Coach since 2018. Previously, he coached at both Cedarville University in Ohio, and Belmont University in Nashville. He also worked as a Head Coach with Stars Basketball Club in Nashville, the largest youth basketball club in the city, from 2015-2018. “We are blessed to announce Coach Matoh as our next Boys Basketball Coach,” said Deacon Armor. “Matt is not only an excellent student of the sport who has a proven track record of coaching, but he is a leader who cares about developing young men into leaders themselves.”

Most recently, Coach Matoh led the Baylor Middle School Boys Basketball team to an Independent School Conference (ISC) championship. “I am excited to have a chance to join the community at Notre Dame High School,” said Coach Matoh. “I’ve seen this school as a place where athletics is important, but it is primarily a tight, faith-based community which is building leaders in and out of the classroom.” A native of Cleveland, OH, Coach Matoh grew up playing CYO basketball before matriculating to Belmont University. Upon graduation from Belmont, he served as a Graduate Assistant for their Men’s Basketball program. “The hiring committee did an excellent job in vetting and interviewing several great candidates,” said Dr. Eric Schexnaildre, who will begin as Head of School on July 1. “We are thrilled to add Matt to the Notre Dame High School family; he brings an extensive skillset as a coach and the leadership abilities that we were looking for in our next head coach. Great things are happening at Notre Dame High School and Matt will be a big part of our future.” Coach Matoh makes a home in East Ridge, TN and has lived in Chattanooga since 2018.

After two seasons with Kentucky basketball, Adou Thiero is sticking with John Calipari

Adou Thiero was the first Kentucky basketball player to enter the NCAA transfer portal this offseason.

And now, he’s announced his new college home.

On Monday, Thiero — a 6-foot-8, 222-pound player with two seasons of college basketball experience — announced on Instagram he is following former Kentucky coach John Calipari to Arkansas .

Thiero chose the Razorbacks from a final list of five schools that also included Indiana, North Carolina , Pittsburgh and a return to UK.

Despite being a lightly regarded high school recruit from near Pittsburgh in the 2022 recruiting class, Thiero had an outsized impact on the UK program over the last two seasons. Thiero played sporadically as a freshman, deputizing in a variety of roles for UK due to injuries and other player availability issues on that 2022-23 roster.

Last season as a sophomore, Thiero was one of the best defensive players on the UK team and probably its most physical.

He started 19 of 25 games as a sophomore, missing eight games due to injury and a continued growth spurt. Thiero provided a physicality and toughness that was often praised by Calipari. He also brought a distinct blend of athleticism, size and skill to the court.

“My role — I don’t know. Once again, it changes every game,” Thiero said in March about his role at UK. “Sometimes I have to score. Sometimes it’s just rebounding. Like the Tennessee game, I didn’t really score. I just had a couple of rebounds and blocked shots. But I think if I can just bring energy — always try and get offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, a couple of blocks, some steals — if that’s what I have to do for us to win, then I’ll do that. I think I just gotta come in and play … as hard as I can, and we should be in the right place.”

Thiero averaged 7.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 blocks as a sophomore at Kentucky. He only played seven minutes in his final UK game, a first round NCAA Tournament defeat to Oakland in March.

According to college basketball statistician Evan Miyakawa , Thiero ranked as the No. 132 overall player in the transfer portal, as of Monday afternoon.

Thiero entered the transfer portal while Calipari was still at his former post with UK. Thiero’s father, Almamy, also played for Calipari when he was the coach at Memphis.

The Wildcats hired Mark Pope, the former head coach at BYU and Utah Valley and a key member of UK’s 1996 NCAA championship team, to replace Calipari.

Mark Pope constructs his first Kentucky basketball roster

Mark Pope is building his first UK basketball roster from scratch.

Along with Thiero, Aaron Bradshaw (Ohio State), Joey Hart ( Ball State ) and Zvonimir Ivisic (Arkansas) are players from the 2023-24 Kentucky squad that will transfer to new schools. Additionally, Jordan Burks, Ugonna Onyenso and D.J. Wagner are still in the NCAA transfer portal.

Also from last season’s team, Rob Dillingham , Justin Edwards and Reed Sheppard have declared for the 2024 NBA draft. Tre Mitchell and Antonio Reeves have exhausted their college eligibility.

Five of the six players that Calipari had lined up as part of Kentucky’s 2024 recruiting class decommitted from the UK program and will be going to new schools.

Three of these players — Boogie Fland , Karter Knox and Billy Richmond — have committed to Calipari and Arkansas. Somto Cyril will be going to Georgia and Jayden Quaintance will be going to Arizona State.

In-state guard Travis Perry, the all-time leading scorer in Kentucky high school boys basketball history, is the only recruit who will remain committed to UK and play for Pope.

Perry is one of nine known players on Pope’s first Kentucky basketball roster for next season.

The others are first-year guard Collin Chandler (a former BYU signee), third-year guard Otega Oweh (who previously played two seasons at Oklahoma ), fifth-year guards Koby Brea (who previously played four seasons at Dayton ), Lamont Butler (who previously played four seasons at San Diego State ) and Kerr Kriisa (who previously played at Arizona and West Virginia ), fifth-year forward Amari Williams (who previously played four seasons at Drexel), fifth-year forward Andrew Carr (who previously played two seasons each at Delaware and Wake Forest) and second-year center Brandon Garrison (who played last season at Oklahoma State).

May 1 was the deadline for college basketball players (including graduate transfers) to enter the transfer portal. The early-entry deadline for the 2024 NBA draft has also already passed.

Players who entered the draft with remaining NCAA eligibility have until May 29 to remove their names from consideration and return to school.

Mark Pope has been praised for his first UK basketball roster. He still has one huge need.
