chyuluhills kenya

You are proud, regal and elegant, Leo, much like the majestic lion that represents your sign. You possess certain fiery energy that can’t be ignored. In the animal kingdom, you dominate the land, in the social world, you dominate the conversation. No gathering, group or trend is complete without a Leo in the mix,  after all, what would cinema be without Alfred Hitchcock? What would Harry Potter (the movies) be without Daniel Radcliffe, or worse yet, what would Harry Potter (the books) be without J.K. Rowling?

There’s no doubt that the world wouldn’t be the same without you boldly taking the reigns and getting things done. You’re often quite spontaneous when planning your next adventure but you always consider how Instagram-worthy the place is, and how far your money will stretch. So when you meticulously begin planning your dream vacation, you look for a place that will not only stimulate your senses, but one that is somewhat remote where you can really disconnect, relax and recharge (away from all the crowds of adoring fans), and there’s nowhere better to do all of that and more than Indonesia.

An Astrologer and Travel Agent Share Where To Travel This Year, According to Your Zodiac Sign

travel by zodiac sign

  • Maria Sofia Marmanides , astrologer, tarot reader, and intuitive
  • Tom Marchant , owner and co-founder of the Black Tomato luxury travel agency

While there is an entire focus in astrology that considers how geography interacts with your specific birth chart called astrocartography , it's also possible to get a simpler star-aligned travel suggestion, according astrologer to Maria Sofia Marmanides . All you have to do is consider your ninth house. In astrology, there are 12 houses that govern different aspects of life, and the ninth house focuses on travel. "We can take a lot of cues about what appeals to us while away from home and out of our comfort zones based on the sign and planet that is ruling that house," Marmanides says.

"We can take a lot of cues about what appeals to us while away from home and out of our comfort zones based on the sign and planet that is ruling [the ninth] house." —Maria Sofia Marmanides, astrologer

Just be sure to read for your rising sign (not your sun sign, which is what you'd typically read for your horoscope), since your rising sign is what's connected to the placement of houses. "Your rising sign determines where all the houses or areas of life are set up in your birth chart, so reading for your rising sign gives your horoscopes, if they’re reliably written, a dead-on accuracy that you just can’t get from sun signs," astrologer Mackenzie Greer previously told Well+Good .

{{post.sponsorText}}

Your rising sign will always be the sign in your first house, so to determine your ninth house placement, count to the ninth sign ahead of your rising sign. For example, if you are a Leo rising, Leo is your first house placement, and Aries—nine signs away from Leo—rules your ninth house of travel. (Not sure what your rising sign is? Input your birth time, date, and location into a free natal chart generator like this one .)

Below, Marmanides and Tom Marchant , founder of the Black Tomato travel agency, offer specifics for where to travel this year, according to your zodiac sign.

Check out below for where to travel, based on your zodiac sign

  • 09 Sagittarius
  • 10 Capricorn
  • 11 Aquarius

Aries: t he Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

travel by zodiac sign

Sagittarius rules Aries's ninth house, and since one of the archer’s core traits is seeking change, this means Aries wants to expand their horizons when they travel. “A yoga or meditation retreat may be just the thing that relaxes their fiery nature while also allowing them to have a spiritual and adventurous experience,” Marmanides says.

Marchant says the  Yucatán Peninsula region of Mexico is a good bet for self-reflection and relaxation. Marchant recommends seeking out sunrise yoga, enjoying spa treatments, diving in natural cenotes , or swimming in a saltwater lagoon for a healing vacation you won't forget.

Taurus: Svalbard, Norway

travel by zodiac sign

Taurus loves nature, and Capricorn ruling its ninth house means the bull will enjoy travel that includes picturesque, snowy destinations in the mountains where they can do lots of physical activities.

Scenic and unique, Svalbard is a winter wonderland filled with pleasing views. “Days can be spent cross-country skiing between mighty glaciers and vast peaks, with nights beneath the blaze of the midnight sun ,” Marchant says.

Gemini: Patagonia, Chile

where to travel zodiac sign

Gemini wants to experience something their friends haven’t, so Marmanides says any destination “that has the potential to be the next coolest place to travel” is their ideal vacation spot.

The remoteness and beauty of Patagonia make it one of the next “it” travel destinations, Marchant says: “Its rugged wilds, dense forests, and turquoise-tinted lakes will leave visitors breathless in the best possible way.”

Cancer: Paros or Folegandros, Greece

travel by zodiac sign

Cancers want to escape and unplug, so they’ll look for a vacation that’s as remote as possible to maximize their chances to relax. Breezy Pisces rules Cancer’s ninth house, which Marmanides says means they want to return from vacation “refreshed, reenergized, and ready to reset.”

The Greek islands are ideal for rest and relaxation, especially the locales that are a less trodden with tourists. “Avoiding crowds is easy in the secretive Byzantine coves of Paros  and the isolated quietude of Folegandros , a tiny, gem-like island that once served as a place of political exile,” Marchant says.

Leo: Diamond Circle, Iceland

travel by zodiac sign

Leos love anything grand, and that extends to how they vacation. “Anything where they can cross something off their bucket list and share it on social media will make them feel like this vacation was one for the record books,” Marmanides says. Aries rules their travel house, so this means they’ll want a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that involves activities.

The Diamond Circle driving route in the northeast area of Iceland is a “true bucket list item off the beaten path,” Marchant says. The major sites on the route, harbor town Húsavík (known for its whale watching), Lake Mývatn, the Dettifoss waterfall and the Ásbyrgi Canyon, show off the rustic and wild wonders Iceland is known for, he adds.

Virgo: Lake Como, Italy

travel by zodiac sign

Virgos want simplicity while on vacation, and they also like to plan. All-inclusive options with everything in one place is often a star-aligned option. Taurus rules their ninth house, so they’re also into luxury, Marmanides says.

Located in Northern Italy, Lake Como is a glamorous destination known for its luxe offerings. Marchant recommends a stay at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo , which he says offers “five-star service with classic and elegant Italian charm.”

Libra: Beijing

travel by zodiac sign

Libras, whose ninth house is ruled by Gemini, want beautiful destinations with lots of history. “They won’t mind choosing a place that is so full of things to do that they’ll have to come back, and they might enjoy visiting the same place a few times, so their ideal locations are big cities,” Marmanides says.

No traveler on vacation would be able to do everything in Beijing, China's massive and sprawling capital city, which Marchant says "fuses modernity with tradition." Ancient landmarks include the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven.

Scorpio: Egypt

travel by zodiac sign

Scorpios pursue depth, so they want that on vacation, too; this means going places where they can dive into an immersive culture and history. “The more ancient the better,” Marmanides says.

Marchant recommends heading to Egypt. Home to some of the best-known wonders of the ancient world, he says there's "no shortage of sites for exploration, including the grand temples and its meandering River Nile."

Sagittarius: Cartagena, Colombia

where to travel zodiac sign

Sags want their trips to be epic and filled with fun. Outgoing Leo rules their ninth house, which Marmanides says means “destinations known for nightlife, from restaurants, bars, and clubs, to other places where they can be seen.”

According to Marchant, Cartagena , the seaside jewel of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, has Latin America’s best party scene. The bars don’t close until dawn and clubs pulse with vibrant dancing and music. Marchant suggests dancing the night away and eating and drinking at Café del Mar .

Capricorn: Miami, Florida

travel by zodiac sign

Organized Caps like to get as much out of their time off as possible by researching an itinerary and packing trips with lots of well-vetted activities. Practical Virgo rules their ninth house, so a “global city where they can keep their schedules tight” ensures they’ll never need to run out of things to do and places to see in one trip.

Miami is a bustling city, with myriad activities and global influences, allowing Capricorns to move from one thing to the next. Marchant recommends taking in peaceful ocean views in luxury at The Setai . Visit the Art Deco District’ s art galleries and hit the Lincoln Road shopping district before setting out for some late-night food and dancing around Ocean Drive.

Aquarius: Stockholm, Sweden

travel by zodiac sign

Fashionable Libra rules Aquarius’s ninth house, lending the creative sign a love of shopping. “They want to find something unique and memorable to bring back home as a souvenir or memento,” Marmanides says.

Stockholm is growing fashion capital, which Marchant calls “a trendsetter’s heaven.” It's known for its focus on sustainable and modern design. Check out the fashionable Södermalm district in downtown Stockholm.

Pisces: The Great Blue Hole, Belize

where to travel zodiac sign

Scorpio rules Pisces's ninth house, lending a dose of depth and intensity in terms of travel. This can manifest as Pisces wanting relaxing and unwinding to be top travel priorities. It’s fitting that the zodiac’s fish wants to be anywhere near water, which “allows them to relax and enjoy the soothing and cleansing effects of salt water on their skin,” Marmanides says.

This year, Pisces may embark on a dreamy Caribbean vacation in the clear, blue waters in Belize. Marchant recommends scuba diving in the Great Blue Hole , which researchers think is the largest sinkhole of its kind in the world and a part of a collapsed cave system that’s believed to have formed around 10,000 years ago.

Where to travel based on your zodiac sign

We’ve scoured the zodiac, and Planet Earth, and come up with suggestions for where to go based on your astrological sign.

Southern California, USA

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

The first sign in the zodiac, you are the astrological young-at-heart Aries. You're pioneering, spontaneous and a burst of sunshine. You know how to get the party started and like to be challenged.

For your perfect trip, head to SoCal. Hire a car, put the top down and live your best life cruising the Sunset Strip, clubbing with LA’s prettiest, or soaking up sun in chilled-out San Diego.

Tuscany, Italy

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

No one understands how to enjoy the earth’s finest pleasures better than you, dear Taurus. Your ruling planet is Venus and you are easy to seduce with fine tastes and beautiful surroundings.

Head to Tuscany where you can cosy up in a rustic villa, open a bottle of Chianti and take in the views. Plan a day to see some of humanity’s most elegant artworks at the Uffizi Gallery.

Twin cities

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

You're known for having multiple personalities, but it’s just because you love meeting people and sharing ideas. Visit a spot that stimulates you and offers something to fit your dualistic nature.

Here's a twin-city getaway: Tel Aviv and Jerusalem will keep your curiosity fed. Enjoy Tel Aviv’s fast-paced nightlife and dining scene, then soak up Jerusalem’s vast history and cultural mix.

South of France

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

You really get what ‘slow travel’ means. Cancer’s constellation is the crab and you’re ruled by the emotional moon, meaning you're most comfortable in your shell and like to always feel at home.

That means having a few creature comforts and an easy-going pace. Head to the south of France, where the relaxed energy will revive you. Snag a cosy rental apartment (hotels are far too impersonal).

Gazing skyward can be like traveling. The heavens are mysterious, expansive, and full of wonder. For astrologers, the sky is filled with signposts, and it’s all thanks to the zodiac.

Most of us know our sun signs—that’s which zodiac constellation the sun was in when we were born. That’s why we read horoscopes, a personal forecast based on cosmic movements. But what about our travel horoscope? Can we determine the best destinations and timing for travel based on the zodiac signs?

Why yes, we can. According to Astrologer Kyle Thomas , the planets, sun, and moon can all factor into travel horoscopes. And 2020 promises to be an excellent year for travel. Thomas explains that with Jupiter in Capricorn throughout 2020, we can expect a bit of luck and maybe even miracles as we explore natural landscapes (like a goat, the symbol of Capricorn). Better still, international explorations are calling through early 2020 with Mars, the planet of energy, in Sagittarius. By year’s end, “Mars will be in Aries, which will definitely make very hot destinations the most desirable,” says Thomas.

Here’s more zodiac travel insight for each specific sun sign.

Aries (March 21 to April 19), Spain

travel by zodiac sign

The country where Flamenco began is a dreamy destination for Aries. “Spain is filled with vibrant colors and experiences,” says Thomas. “Aries possesses a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, and craves festivities.” While Barcelona and Madrid are fine cities for culture and gastronomy, find even more flavor in sunny Seville. At the city’s Flamenco Dance Museum , Aries can revel in emotive music, costumes, and dance performances, and even join and dance or music classes.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20), France

travel by zodiac sign

“As a zodiac sign that favors the senses and pleasure, Taurus will feel most alive in France,” says Thomas, adding that the beauty and romance in Paris will invite bulls to feel right at home. Reserve time for romantic strolls and leisurely dining at charming brasseries where you can sit for hours sipping drinks and discussing art. Seek out accommodations in charming Montmartre, perhaps at Maison Souquet , where each suite is lushly designed with silky textiles and other boudoir-appropriate touches.

9 Countries Where the U.S. Dollar Goes Furthest

Gemini (May 21 to June 21), Brazil

travel by zodiac sign

Gemini is among the more adventurous zodiac signs. So, Thomas points Gemini travelers to Brazil, a destination filled with hidden wonders that can keep the astrological twins’ minds abuzz. “Gemini is a zodiac sign always craving spontaneity and is curious about the world.” Rio de Janeiro is a vibrant choice for its culinary temptations and Carnival spirit. But a Gemini will be inspired by the colors and quirks of the Santa Teresa hilltop district, where artists lend their talents to enrich the local flair.

9 Incredible Brazilian Beaches for Every Type of Traveler

Cancer (June 21 to July 22), New Zealand

travel by zodiac sign

“As a water sign, Cancers love to be near the ocean or lakes,” says Thomas. “With so much natural beauty in New Zealand, Cancers will remember this vacation for the rest of their lives.” Indeed, with 9,300 miles of coastline, this Pacific nation is perfect for beach bums. Best destinations for Cancers are on the North Island, where a home base in Auckland allows for day-tripping to Coromandel Forest Park (about a two-hour drive). The park fills out a peninsula home to Hahei Beach with reefs made for diving and snorkeling, and Hot Water Beach where you can dig your own heated mineral pool in the sand.

10 Best Places to Go in New Zealand

Leo (July 23 to August 22), Greece

travel by zodiac sign

The fire in every Leo leads to serious travel love. “Leos crave expression, inspiration, and creativity, and Greece holds plenty of passion,” says Thomas, alluding to the country’s cultural and social legacy. History fans can’t go wrong with Athens, one of the world’s great cities, or any of its enchanted Aegean islands. But further south on the Peloponnese coast is Monemvasia, where an ancient castle and cobblestone streets echo the town’s medieval roots, and where poets and artists find solace in the Greek sun.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22), California

travel by zodiac sign

“As an Earth sign, Virgos love to embrace nature and enjoy a planned-out journey,” Thomas says. “California offers an opportunity to travel along the coast or within the state to keep them always moving to the next location.” Road-tripping through the Golden State is a no-brainer since travelers can roll from mountains to the ocean, or from desert to metropolis all in a day. One of the best journeys is a day trip across Sonoma County, starting in the historic town of Sonoma, then traveling westward through wine country for a walk at the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve , and winding down with a Pacific sunset at Bodega Bay.

California’s Best-Kept Secret Is This Beachside Wine Region

Libra (September 23 to October 22), Quebec, Canada

travel by zodiac sign

Travel astrology points Libras toward a location that promises “steady fun and recreation.” This air sign loves to socialize and enjoy the nightlife, and Montreal, Quebec, is a culturally rich city filled with stimuli. Libras can balance out their scales with outdoor recreation in Mount Royal or the Botanical Garden. Indoor time is well spent catching Canada’s premier drag stars at the famous Cabaret Mado , or dining at a great Montreal restaurant like Candide , with changing monthly prix-fixe dining menus.

Scorpio (October 23 to November 21), Egypt

travel by zodiac sign

“As a zodiac sign that’s most connected to mystery and magic, Egypt’s ancient history will bewitch a Scorpio and ignite their fascination with the supernatural,” Thomas reports. Naturally, Scorpions will find fascination in the magnificent pyramids of Giza. About an hour south of Cairo and Giza, however, curious minds can ponder the lesser-known (and less-visited) pyramids known as Bent, Black, and Stepped. At the Red (or North) pyramid in Dahshur, inquisitive Scorpios can even slip inside its passageways to absorb the mystique of its inner chambers.

Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21), South Africa

travel by zodiac sign

“Sagittarius is known for their wanderlust and need to explore—so South Africa will light up their hearts,” says Thomas. It’s true, South Africa has so many wonderful travel options, from short or extended safaris to beautiful beaches to unforgettable wine-country excursions. And while a Cape Town visit is essential, Johannesburg has emerged lately as one of the world’s most exciting cities. There, fiery Sag globetrotters may leap at the chance to try bungee jumping from a catwalk 100 meters high at the twin cooling towers–turned–adventure park known as Soweto Towers .

Capricorn (December 22 to January 19), Iceland

travel by zodiac sign

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of ice—fitting for a zodiac sign aligned with the start of winter. So nomadic goats will do well in Iceland, where nature reigns. Capricorns can explore the nation’s waterfalls, glaciers, hot springs, and sea cliffs all while viewing wildlife from whales and seals to puffins and Arctic foxes. “Aquarius is the most forward-thinking zodiac sign, and is always about the next technological advancement,” Thomas reports. So, it’s no surprise that he says, “Japan will captivate every Aquarius.” Few cities seem so futuristic as Tokyo, the world’s largest metropolis. There, progressive-minded Aquarian adventurers can dive deep into the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation that is Miraikan . Parked on the man-made island of Odaiba, it’s the place to discover feats of human engineering, the future of robots, and the essence of the universe.

Pisces (February 19 to March 20), Puerto Rico

The Caribbean offers all travelers a bit of breezy pleasure, but according to Thomas, “As a water sign, Pisces are one with the sea.” The best city for Pisces is someplace with plenty of open air and swimming beaches, complemented by music and pockets of romance—and San Juan, Puerto Rico is just the spot. In Condado Beach just east of Old San Juan, the fish sign can linger under palm trees and catch gorgeous waves all day long.

Traveling With Friends

Best strategies to make vacation enjoyable!

Print Friendly and PDF

Planning any travel this year? Let’s find the best strategies to make your vacation enjoyable, not stressful, by taking a look at your personality and zodiac sign.   Have you ever traveled with a friend and felt they cramped your style? Or how about this scenario: you go on a cruise because you heard it’s all the rage, only to discover you’re more of a landlubber than a sailor. While travel is the spice of life, it can make you salty, especially if your vacation hideaway is not a good fit.   But what if you could figure out simple travel strategies tailored to your personality? Enter astrology, your best GPS system for navigating vacations like a pro!   Each zodiac sign has unique personality quirks, which means they’ll approach situations like traveling differently. For example, an Aries is ready to hit the trails first thing in the morning, while Pisces is content to lounge around by the pool. Once you understand what suits your sign as well as your fellow jet-setting companions, you’ll be able to make better decisions. Result: happier getaways for all!

The Four Elements and Travel

Here’s what you need to know to make your journeys the best for your zodiac sign.   First of all, you’ll want to consider your element before booking your trip. There are four elements, and each sign falls under one. Your element can steer you in the right direction for the type of trip you’ll enjoy.   Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Fire signs need action, adventure, and plenty of Sun. Tropical vacations snorkeling with the sharks, hikes in remote locations, and treks through the jungle suit them well.    Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): Earth signs enjoy being in nature. Forest bathing, sunning on the beach, and remote cabins appeal to their grounded personalities. However, they’re practical, which means they might want a hybrid of city and country so they can get their coffee fix.   Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Air signs are thinkers, so cities are their cup of tea. Museums, restaurants, and dancing all night at the hot clubs are the way to go if you’re one of these airy folks. While they don’t mind being outdoors, it’s better if there is concrete underneath their feet.   Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Water signs love beaches, cruises, or jet skiing around a lake. If you fall under one of these signs, ensure an ocean, lake, or pool is nearby - and always pack a swimsuit.

What candy are you, based on your zodiac sign, what is my moon sign and what does it mean, what sign is the moon in today.

If you’re an Aries, you’re adventurous and impulsive, so it’s best not to pack your schedule with too many activities. Instead, keep it loose so you can see where the road takes you. Physical activity is a must.

Hiking, wandering city streets, or dancing at outdoor concerts suits your fiery nature. You can be a “last minute” type, which means you’re often at the airport minutes before takeoff.

A bit of planning will lower your tension as well as the stress levels of your travel companions. Keep other people’s needs in mind. Not everyone wants to run around at your breakneck pace.

You love to feel comfy, no matter what you’re doing. Soft clothing, cashmere wraps, noise-canceling headphones, and plenty of snacks keep you calm. While you adore nature, a beautifully appointed cabin works better than a tent. An indulgent getaway at a spa is always a good bet, too. You like to eat well, so research restaurants before you go. Don’t forget to sleep in as much as possible. After all, you’re on vacation!

However, this can be taken to the extreme, which could mean missing out on the sights. Set your alarm so you don’t miss out on the fun. Those who must travel with Taurus quickly discover they take forever to get ready. Even when they’re off the clock, they want to look good. Don’t bother trying to rush them. Instead, find something else to do until they’re ready to make their entrance.

See what not to forget on vacation !

A Gemini in a city is a sight to behold! You’ll happily flit about from one shop to another, buying souvenirs and chatting with all the locals.

You might be bilingual, so you should visit places where you can practice your language skills. Visits to bookstores are always on your agenda, no matter where you travel. You’re also keen to learn everything about the destination and are known to pester tour guides for the “real” story.

Because you need room to breathe, cruises are not your best bet. Trapped at sea gives you anxiety. You can get fidgety, especially on long plane rides. Be sure to bring plenty of reading material. Lastly, make time to rest. Your busy mind needs downtime. You don’t have to be “on the go” constantly.

You have a reputation for being a homebody. It’s true you love your home. However, you do enjoy traveling, provided you’re in control. You enjoy planning, packing, and organizing your brood, but that can quickly turn to nagging if things don’t go your way. If you can find a way to create a sense of order without micromanaging, everyone will have a better time.

Beaches, camping, cruises, and “staycations” appeal to you. Cozy cabins are also on your favorite list because it feels like home.

Comfortable beds are a must, and kitchens are a plus. Special note: Cancer children can become anxious when they are too far from home. Pack a favorite toy to calm their nerves.

If you’re a Lion, you like to live large and travel in style. Leos are the maximalists of the zodiac. It’s no surprise that you tend to overpack. While your loved ones prefer carry-ons, you must resort to check-in because you need plenty of outfits and hair care for your famous mane. Even if you learn to pack light, you’ll never show up at the airport looking like a slob. After all, the world is your runway!

Four-star hotels, all-inclusive resorts, or sunny destinations make your big heart happy. If you say yes to camping, it needs to be “glamping” with all the creature comforts. Because you’re a fire sign and an extrovert, you’re always up for adventure and often the life of every party. That person grabbing the mic at the island karaoke bar? Yep, it’s probably a Leo.

You’re the practical type, so planning is right up your alley. You love to organize all the details and seem to find the best deals. Because order is important to you, your packing skills are unmatched. Like a Tetris game, every item will be carefully put away, preferably in packing cubes. Itineraries soothe your nerves.

However, you lose your cool if your travel companions are late or the plane is delayed. Remember: not everything runs on your schedule. Create some breathing room, or bring a book to occupy your mind. Many Virgos prefer work vacations so they can feel productive and get a tax write-off. While that’s admirable, it might be wise sometimes to plan a trip with nothing to do at all. Give your busy brain a break!

You are a wonderful travel companion. You’re charming, considerate, and always up for a good time. No wonder everyone wants to hit the road with you! While beautiful cities like Paris are your fave habitats, you are also open to long walks on the beach. As long as the environment isn’t too dirty or unsafe, you’re in!

travel by zodiac sign

Regarding packing, you tend to bring too much, especially your favorite grooming products. After all, appearances are important to you. Instead of bringing the whole kit and caboodle, take only what is necessary. Same with your clothes. A capsule wardrobe will keep you looking fab and prevent those baggage fees.

Watch out for a tendency to stifle your needs to keep the peace with others. If you don’t want to go on a ten-mile hike through the mountains on a humid day, say it. It’s perfectly fine to let everyone else go off on those adventures while you do something more fabulous.

You don’t mind staycations or trips to remote places. In fact, you prefer being away from the rest of civilization as much as possible. However, you don’t mind big cities. You can get lost in the crowds, moving around people undetected like a secret agent. Bring as many black clothes as possible to keep that cool allure.

You never mind traveling alone. In fact, you prefer it. Scorpios are the best solo travelers of all. Research is your jam, and you are known to scour the internet for interesting, off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Dangerous parts of the world appeal to you, too. While that could set you up for thrills, it could also lead to trouble. Satisfy your curiosity about the underworld by choosing hot spots like New York, which perfectly blend glam and grime.

Sagittarius

The open roads and friendly skies are always waiting for you. You’re the most adventurous traveler and probably have more stamps than any other sign on your passport. You’re especially fond of the outdoors.

Trips to gorgeous landscapes, skiing on the Swiss Alps, long hikes, meandering through ancient cities— yes, please. If you travel with others, please remember not everyone will keep up with your pace. Slow down, and you might discover many new things along the way.

Traveling light serves your free-spirited nature. Spontaneous road trips are always good, especially when you feel too tied down. If you travel with a Sagittarius child, give them space to run around. They don’t fare well on long journeys where they are forced to sit.

travel by zodiac sign

Next to Virgo, you’re the most organized traveler. You never go without an agenda and map. History appeals to you, so traveling to ancient locations such as Egypt or Rome satisfies your need to know where things originated.

Quality is essential, so nice hotels and beautiful luggage matter. (The best-dressed person at the airport is usually a Capricorn.)

While you don’t mind traveling solo, group excursions help you feel less lonely. However, because you’re so capable, you might take the lead. Learn to sit back and trust your tour guides.

Early morning flights will keep you calm, while long train rides give you an excuse to work while whizzing through gorgeous landscapes.

You love seeing how the rest of the world lives, so traveling to parts unknown will satisfy your curiosity. You’re also intrigued with outer space, so perhaps a rocket ride is in your future?

Even if you never get to the moon, you’ll be someone who’s seeking the more exciting destinations. Always up for a good time, you can mix with people from all walks of life. This means you’re versatile and an excellent travel companion.

You’re also adept at mixing with the locals, which allows you to get invites into places other people never see. Technology is your friend, so download the latest travel apps. It will make your travels more efficient.

Oceans should always be part of your travel plans. If not oceans, some body of water. Pools count, too. It’s good for your soul. Not just because you’re born under the sign of the Fish but because you’re sensitive.

You can be nervous in loud cities, but you can recharge if you have a water source nearby. A long cruise to Alaska to see the whales should be added to your bucket list. When it comes to packing and planning, you are not the most organized. Bring a Virgo or Capricorn along and let them handle the details.

Watch out for a tendency to get conned by people who play on your sympathetic nature. Learn about scams in the place you intend to visit before you set sail, and you’ll stay out of trouble. Lastly, you tend to get lost, so be sure always to have your GPS turned on.

Enjoy learning about you and your zodiac sign. See the perfect houseplant for your personality !

How to travel based on your zodiac sign

By Michaela Trimble

travel based on your zodiac sign

There’s a chance you may enjoy your vacations even more if you make your plans for travel based on your zodiac sign, whether you’re a romantic and imaginative Pisces who loves to daydream by the sea or you’re a fiery Sagittarius who yearns to travel the globe in search of culture and adventure. Your sun sign is dictated by the time and place you were born and many people swear by it as a defining aspect of their personality.

The astrologer for British Vogue Alice Bell suggests considering the element of your sun sign as the easiest way to consider the best trip for you. “Fire signs like Aries, Leo and Sagittarius will be more prone to adventure and getting out of their comfort zone ,” says Bell. “Water signs like Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio are looking for soothing trips near the water to help them relax, ground and explore their innate inclination towards spirituality.” Likewise, air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) find it natural to go with the flow and will have the most fun with travel that includes a dash of artistic stimulation, while earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) are all about scheduled sabbaticals with both structure and purpose—the earlier they can plan and book travel, the better.

Life coach and astrologist Jenn Kosh suggests leaning into the archetypes of your sign as a way to experiment with your travels. “Each zodiac sign holds a set of archetypes —powerful inner forces that help account for each of our personality traits, fears, motivations and preferences,” says Kosh. “These can also provide insight into the reasons we’re drawn to a particular location or type of vacation, or why we may feel repelled by it.” Kosh suggests first getting to know the archetypes associated with your sun sign, then tuning into which ones feel the most exciting.

Here, find our guide on how to travel based on your zodiac sign.

Aries: March 21 – April 19

Out of all the fire signs, Aries tend to be the most delightfully rash. Aries archetypes include the athlete, the adventurer and the warrior as they have a strong desire to blaze their own trail and tend to be one of the hardest signs to slow down. They don’t have much patience to wait around and decide where to travel; instead, they lean on impulse and are likely to book last-minute trips on a whim, whether based on a deal or a desire. Because they are highly active and thrive in competition, they’d be well-suited for a more adventurous travel plan like an action-packed hike in Tanzania to the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. They’d also be prime contenders for a solo trip to the Big Island of Hawaii to compete in an Iron Man competition.

Taurus: April 20 – May 20

While all earth signs value structure and purpose, Tauruses are bulls by nature and tend to be one of the most stubborn, orderly signs of the Zodiac. True earth dwellers, Taurus archetypes are the artist, the gourmand, and the gardener, as they tend to value stability and the calming effect that comes with a steady routine. Tauruses appreciate security and prefer to stick to what they know, yet they’re enticed by travel that is entangled with the arts and a healthy dose of earthly indulgence. An ideal trip for a Taurus would be a gourmand getaway through Provence, visiting wineries. It’s even better if the trip ends in Paris, where Tauruses can go on a shopping spree before hopping on to the Louvre.

Gemini: May 21 – June 20

Geminis tend to be the most relaxed sign in the Zodiac, and can handle pretty much anything with ease: trip cancellations, last-minute plans, or a spur-of-the-moment adventure. With archetypes of the communicator, muse, and networker, Geminis’ biggest fear is to be alone. As such, they tend to travel in groups and are easily mutable to almost any plan, be it a laid-back getaway or a more action-packed itinerary. But because they are intellectual and tend to be the life of the party —they’re known to be quite the charming jokesters—they’d do well on a journey that expands their mind and also allows them to meet other outgoing travelers. Experiences like a wellness cruise would be great for a Gemini, as they value learning from experts while experiencing variety, or even a wild ride through the desert rave that is Burning Man, where they can choose their adventure of the day based on their mood.

Cancer: June 21 – July 22

As the most family-oriented sign in the Zodiac, Cancers are likely to travel with a tight-knit group of friends or family. Archetypes of this sign include the rescuer, protector, and nurturer, as they are deeply empathetic and value quality time over all else. That makes Cancers fond of trips home to see loved ones or journeys to destinations where they’ve already been several times. They crave comfort so novel travel destinations may overwhelm them. Cancers would most likely prefer feeling at ease during intimate getaways and in places where they have their own space to get cosy. Buyouts of villas, lodges, and homes would be ideal for Cancers. Some ideal plans include a cosy winter stay with their loved one in the mountains of Italy or an annual summer getaway with family to a farmhouse with an organic garden in Spain.

Leo: July 23 – August 22

Overflowing with creativity, confidence and the desire to take risks and to see and be seen, this fire sign is at home in their warm, bold nature and prefers their trips to match their vigour for life. With associated archetypes of the lover, the romantic and the performer, Leos feel most at home in adventurous destinations that are vibrant, colourful and contain a certain type of vivacity that makes them hum with life. A trip around India would be an ideal destination for a Leo. In Jaipur , Leos can delight at the red and pink sandstone Hawa Mahal Palace and spend hours shopping the plentiful array of colourful textile shops during a stay at the Arto Deco-style Rajmahal Palace, and later visit the fast-paced city of Delhi, where they can hop a train to see the iconic Taj Mahal. If they need even more adrenaline, they can search for tigers in Ranthambore National Park or head straight to South Goa, where they can surf the waves.

Virgo: August 23 – September 22

All earth signs are suited for solo travel and advanced planning, but unlike Taurus and Capricorn, Virgos desire a touch of wellness in their travel. They’re known as the perfectionists, guardians and organizers of the Zodiac, yet also the herbalists, healers and hermits. These two seemingly conflicting archetypal pulls—the desire for perfection and also peace—can find harmony when combined on a trip that’s equal parts organised and wellness-oriented. Virgos may find a trip to a healing centre an ideal reprieve from everyday life, especially one that has a rigorous schedule. A silent Vipassana retreat could do the Virgo good. Virgos would also delight in properties in Dubai, where biohacking assessments are offered at check-in, as well as cutting-edge recovery treatments like cryotherapy, cold plunge baths and IV drips.

Libra: September 23 – October 22

True aesthetes at heart, Libras are the lovers, chameleons and socialites of the Zodiac. It can be quite hard to fully understand the personality of a Libra, as they tend to blend in wherever you put them and take on the personality of those they’re with. Similar to Gemini, Libras don’t like being alone. Masters of charm and diplomatic to their core, Libras can be quite relaxed when it comes to their travel plans and will usually go along with whatever the group consensus is—St. Barts or Saint Tropez, it makes no difference to them. As long as they’re with their crew, they will have fun wherever they go. If a Libra does take some initiative to contribute to travel plans , it will be a trip that explores the finer things in life: culture, art and shopping. They would thrive while exploring the Danish Modern design movement of Copenhagen, or even on a trip to Japan to soak up the culture and shopping in Tokyo before venturing off to Naoshima Island in the Seto Inland Sea.

Scorpio: October 23 – November 21

Known for their ability to navigate deep emotional waters and their intense desire to understand complex social dynamics, Scorpios tend to seek an educational component to their travel—and the thing they like to learn most about is themselves. One part alchemist, one part rebel, Scorpios identify as lone rangers on a quest to understand what makes them tick; they can often take on an inquisitive persona as truth -seekers and healers. While one of their biggest fears can be to show others their vulnerability, it can also be the thing that sets them free. Not scared of their darkness and complexities, Scorpios would do well on psychedelic retreats where they can dive deep into their inner world: a healing ayahuasca retreat experience in Costa Rica or a psilocybin ceremony in Jamaica could be fantastic options for the ever-curious.

Sagittarius: November 22 – December 21

Sagittarians are the seekers, wanderers, sages and scholars of the Zodiac. They are natural explorers who crave both culture and adventure; the more unknown the destination or obscure the topic, the better for a Sagittarius, as this balance keeps their attention and allows them to explore depths unknown, both literally and figuratively. Because they are fearless voyagers interested in learning and gaining knowledge, they will often be inclined to extended stays in another country. A journey through the wonders of Southeast Asia would be ideal for a Sagittarius: visiting the ancient cities of Bagan in Myanmar, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and Luang Prabang in Laos. They’d also be inclined towards sojourns through Bhutan—perhaps a stay at a lodge to learn about Buddhist culture amid ancient monasteries—or even an adventure through Jordan, where they can hike the Jordan Trail from Wadi Rum to Petra, meeting and communing with Bedouins, the gatekeepers of the land, along the way.

Capricorn: December 22 – January 19

Out of all the earth signs, Capricorns have been awarded the reputation as the most Type A: plans, plans, and more plans. With the archetypes of the ruler, the tyrant and the boss, they crave order, structure and purpose. What sets them apart from other earth signs, however, is their draw towards tradition—think history, classical music , and a hearty to-do list to see the best of both. They don’t necessarily need any sense of novelty on their trip—no risk-taking, please—so old-world European destinations would be ideal for the Capricorn. They would love the Gothic Revival-style Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest, the Baroque Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna and the medieval Charles Bridge in Prague.

Aquarius: January 20 – February 18

Though not necessarily loners, Aquarians are perfectly fine with standing out in a crowd even if that means they don’t fit in. With a desire for mental stimulation and variety at every turn—and most at home when they’re going against the grain to do something no one else has done before—this air sign would be the most likely to travel to space. Since going to Mars may be a few decades away, for now, Aquarians do well with off-the-beaten-path experiences that expand their mind and get them into the great outdoors . Some trip ideas for ever-expansive Aquarians could include travelling all the way to Uruguay just to see the James Turrell installation Ta Khut (his first freestanding Skyspace on the continent) or skipping the typical hikes in Patagonia and opting for an expedition through the Cordillera Huayhuash in Northern Peru instead, where each day on the trail offers new views of cerulean pools set below snow-covered peaks.

Pisces: February 19 - March 20

Highly imaginative and deeply intuitive, Pisces desire space to dream and be the lovers and mystics they are. They’re known as the seers, healers and poets of the Zodiac. Out of all the water signs, they are most likely to yearn for the world’s most alluring coastlines , lakes and rivers for a spiritual reset. (They can go even deeper into themselves and experience profound transformation in the presence of water.) They like to go beyond the typical yoga retreat for a transformative experience in Mexico, where they can learn about Human Design and their astrological profiles in between steamy yoga classes with views of the Pacific Ocean. They would also love a multi-week Ayurvedic reset in Bali, an experience replete with daily spa treatments, yoga and a custom health menu, or even a journey through the most mystical towns in Peru, where they can meander through wildflower meadows rife with rivers and streams while learning the history of the Quechua people, a culture with fellow seers and seekers from which they can learn.

It’s that time of year to be writing out resolutions, and for many of us (raises hand emphatically) those promises revolve around travel . Instead of booking trips willy-nilly, why not point your compass towards your astrological sign, which can serve as a guide to picking a vacation destination that’s best suited to your birth chart. That’s where Lisa Stardust comes in.

Stardust is a best-selling author and astrologer who has been practicing for over 15 years. She believes that looking at the inherent qualities of your zodiac sign is a wonderful way to plan a fulfilling, and potentially life-changing, journey.

“Generally speaking, water signs like the flow of being near the water. To them, the ocean is a constant reminder to keep on going no matter how life flows,” she says. “Then the earth signs really like places that allow them to reflect. Air signs like to have options. And fire signs like to go where they can really shine.”

With that in mind, here are her recommendations for each of the zodiac signs in 2024.

Aries (March 21 – April 19): Los Angeles

“Aries likes to be in the center of it all. They’d love to go to a place like Los Angeles,” says Stardust. While Hollywood may have a tourist-laden reputation, you can enjoy some under-the-radar gems in the area per the recommendations of Avi Brosh and Kirsten Leigh Pratt, the duo behind  Palisociety hospitality group. Or explore Downtown L.A.’s many excellent hotels and restaurants, which we outlined for a recent guide here .

Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Mexico City

“This sign loves to laze about and do something very indulgent. They’re really into culture, art, really good food,” says Stardust. “Mexico City is a very Taurian place because of all the amazing art, architecture, and food. Since Taurus is an earth sign, they want to do a mix of activities that indulge their earthy senses.” If you’re looking for a guide to the incredible street food, modern cuisine, galleries, and mezcal in Latin America’s most crazy-fun metropolis, we have you covered .

Gemini (May 21 – June 20): San Diego

“Geminis are always down for whatever; they really like to have a mix of different energies. They go with the flow, and don’t like to do any planning,” says Stardust. “They’d be at home in a place like San Diego just because there’s so much to do there—beaches, shopping, dining, cool bars. And Geminis really need that sun.” This sign also loves their routines, which is great because just as Alicia Perry, beverage director at the new Lafayette Hotel shared in her recent guide , there’s no shortage of great coffee, yoga studios, hiking trails, and restaurants to be explored, all while staying in your fitness pocket.

More Eye Candy Is Just a Day-Trip Away

Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Baja California

“Cancers only like to go to warm locations where they can crisp like a crab on the beach. They always like to plan their vacations in advance, and want to sit in their cabana, read their magazines. I’d recommend they go to somewhere in Baja California, making sure they pick a property where they can swim.” Many of the beaches on the peninsula near Cabo are not swimmable, but there are great spots like Cerritos near Todos Santos where surfing and swimming are ideal. “They love water sports, boating, jet skiing,  or even parasailing,” so further north up the Baja near La Paz, where Jacques Cousteau loved to dive , would be an excellent option.

Leo (July 23 – August 22): San Francisco

“Leos would thrive in San Francisco just because they like to be center stage. It’s a great art center for their creative minds, and there’s a lot for them to take in. They’re bold, they’re creative, and have really big hearts. And in San Francisco, they can be their unique selves and not hot hold back,” says Stardust. “Plus, if these rambunctious fire signs get into trouble, there’s always Alcatraz if they’re misbehaving.” She also recommends a visit to the Rainbow Tunnel in Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge—quintessentially Leo sights that match their vibrant vibes.

Vancouver Island

Virgo (August 23 – September 22): Vancouver

“Because Virgo is an earth sign, Vancouver would be perfect. It’s an ideal place to connect with nature in a deep way. Ruled by Mercury, just like Gemini, Virgos need a lot of activity, and Vancouver has it all,” says Stardust. “Whistler is really close by, so they have a place to travel in the winter to keep themselves stimulated. And in the warmer months, they can enjoy the beaches and the water.”

Libra (September 23 – October 22): Aspen

“ Aspen would be really great for Libras because they tend to love ‘the nice life.’ This part of Colorado is really chichi and fancy, with lots of great restaurants and amazing natural beauty. Libras are artistic so they’ll really enjoy the scenery, but it’s also small enough that everyone can really be friendly with each other, so it’s great for Libras who are social butterflies,” says Stardust.

Alila Ventana Big Sur Spa

Alila Ventana Big Sur

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): Big Sur

Scorpio is a water sign, so it’s fitting that Stardust pinpointed Big Sur as the ideal location. “You’re right by the ocean and the waves are really strong, which connects with Scorpio’s personality. Scorpios like to get deep and have this intensity to them. They like to meditate, really relax, do yoga, get deep into their exercise routines,” she says. “And what better place to do that than by the beach, and then you can relax with some great Northern Californian wine?” Especially if it’s at a place like the Post Ranch Inn or Alila Ventana Big Sur, pictured above.

Drift Hotel Palm Springs Resort Style Pool

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): Palm Springs and Joshua Tree

“Palm Springs is a really good place for Sag because it’s on a really high energetic plane, especially nearby Joshua Tree,” says Startdust. “Sag is the traveler that’s all about adventure and excitement and embracing new philosophies and spirituality.” Why not pop in for a stay in one of the ultra-cute Airstreams at Autocamp , then check out some of the surreal sculptures like “Transmission” by Daniel Popper, and end the evening with other desert dwellers at a groovy cocktail bar like Mas o Menos.

Grand Canyon West Skywalk

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): Grand Canyon

The perfect trip for Capricorns would be heading out to the Grand Canyon . “Capricorns need to achieve their goals and are highly driven, which is why they need to find a place that’s bigger than them so they can see themselves as small,” says Stardust. The grounding energy of this National Park is indeed palpable, and there are so many new things to explore. And you don’t have to plan a multi-day backpacking trek to get the benefits. “Capricorn is an earth sign, so even driving around it gives a sense of insight into their place in the world, and what they’re striving to achieve.”

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): Seattle

“Aquarius is a watery bearer of the air. It’s an altruistic sign, and Seattle is a very hip and progressive city that they’d enjoy,” says Stardust. Because of its connection to the punk and underground music scene back in the day, an Aquarius can feel part of the scene and part of the community. There’s also plenty of water-based fun to have, whether you’re enjoying some freshly shucked oysters at the family-owned Taylor Shellfish , or relaxing at happy hour at the historic Edgewater Hotel.

Thai Food and Cocktail Spread at Phuket Cafe

Pisces (February 19 – March 20): Portland

“Pisces is a water sign, so what better place for them to be than a port city? This sign would love the combination of rich history and the mythical energy of sailors and mermaids, ideal for Pisces because they’re the mystical sea witch of the Zodiac,” says Stardust. “It’s a great city to get lost in. Water is really healing. The one thing about water signs is that they have to keep on moving and keep on going.” Indeed, this Pacific Northwest city is one of our favorites, too. (And not just because Phuket Cafe, pictured above, is one of our favorite meals of 2023.) Enjoy city life at the new Pacific Standard Hotel one day, then head out for an adventure on the Oregon Coast to go crabbing with Antica Terra out on the Oregon Coast, or book in for a night of indulgent dining at The Tributary Hotel in the Willamette Valley wine region. The world really is your oyster.

After the year of revenge travel (and flight costs rising with a similar vengeance), tourism might be settling into relative homeostasis in 2024. Then again, everything has changed, including the terrain of where you’ll want to go next , and maybe even the order of your bucket list.

Astrologically, 2024 promises to be a stimulating year for travel. We begin the year with Jupiter newly direct in Taurus, which makes the first half of the year (through the end of May) peak season for ecotourism, national parks , vineyard tours, time in burgeoning foodie capitals , music festivals, plant medicine journeys , and agricultural adventures. Late April and May are especially gorgeous months for travel. The food we eat, nature we touch, and art we appreciate around this time could be revolutionary in scope.

On May 25th, Jupiter enters Gemini and initiates a year of curiosity and learning. We might feel compelled to visit locations that scratch a certain intellectual itch, travel for conferences or conventions, or diversify our itineraries to the point where we can barely catch our breath between train stations . As long as our minds are stimulated (and our need for variety satiated), all will be well.

As for where to find all of this? The answer will vary by your sign. So, we’ve looked to our list of the best places to travel in 2024 and matched each zodiac sign with the trip that will check all the right boxes—plus, we read the stars for when is the best time, astrologically speaking, for you to make that journey.

The Kimberly in Australia is home to a rugged coastline with Aboriginal history.

The Kimberly in Australia is home to a rugged coastline with Aboriginal history.

Aries: The Kimberley, Australia

Not one to go with the hordes, you’re more excited by destinations that haven’t already been touched by a stampede of tourist foot traffic. You might jump, then, at the chance to visit Australia’s northwestern coast, known as ‘one of the world’s last wild frontiers.’ Starting in April, The Kimberley, Australia’s rugged coastlines and waterways will be welcoming cruise lines for the first time. Hop on board—then off—to explore ancient Aboriginal rock-art sites and towering cliffs, or join new multi-day itineraries from Aboriginal Culture Expedition.

Although Jupiter will enter your third house of short-distance trips on May 25th—making the second half of 2024 a great time for day and weekend trips out of town—there’s time yet for more ambitious itineraries. Mid-July through early August is a sweet spot for fun and adventure, as Venus (and for the most part, the Sun) will be in life-loving Leo, and your fifth house of pleasure and recreation. This is Australia’s winter, but it’s peak season in the north because of the moderate temperatures, lack of insects, and the relative dryness. As for cruise ships? Scenic’s Scenic Eclipse II will be the only Kimberley-bound ship with helicopters onboard for flightseeing excursions. You know you don’t want to be limited by where your legs can take you.

For food and thoughtful urban design Kobe is the spot.

For food and thoughtful urban design, Kobe is the spot.

Taurus: Kobe, Japan

Everyone has you pegged for the foodie that you are, but what they don’t always appreciate is that you get a thrill out of well-made things that aren’t always edible. Actually, when you travel, it’s usually the cities with thoughtful urban design and good architecture that stand out in your memory the most. For all of those reasons and more, you’ll love visiting Kobe, Japan, which isn’t just famous for its beef. It’s also a burgeoning contemporary design capital with new multipurpose creative centers, trendy hotels, and eccentric outposts for French artisanal perfume and skincare brand Officine Universelle Buly. Starting in early 2024, you’ll also be able to see the city—and the surrounding seas and mountain ranges—from Kobe Port Tower’s panoramic observation deck. It even has a museum and a 360-degree revolving café bar. We know you love a good spa day, too, so you’ll probably be glad to hear about the many hot springs in the area.

Your best time to travel in 2024 is also one of the year’s best moments. Late April and all of May features a host of pleasant planetary guests touring through Taurus, so you’ll be feeling your best and in the mood to treat yourself. If you go between April 30 and May 20, you’ll get the Sun, Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus all together in Taurus, making for a delightful and eye-opening personal journey.

Madagascar satisfies the need for far-flung adventures—but it'll be even easier to reach in 2024.

Gemini: Madagascar

Your curiosity and conversational prowess gives you a lot of free range across social circles and niche interests. So when it comes to travel destinations, it’s the remote, far-flung places that captivate your attention. The good news is that Madagascar , a location that has famously been difficult to get to for travelers, will be easier to visit in 2024. And it’s well-known for its rich biodiversity, a feature that will surely appeal to your love of variety. With new flights and cruise itineraries that link remote destinations across Madagascar, the world’s fourth-largest island will be more accessible and more amenable to your preferred mode of location-hopping. Will you want to be lounging in tents among the baobab trees, making friends with lemurs, kayaking among the humpback whales, or kiteboarding on the beach while decompressing at a luxury villa? How about all of it?

Definitely include Mandrare River Camp on your itinerary, a fully solar-powered ecotourism destination outfitted with luxury safari tents. In terms of timing, everything will be coming up “you” after May 25th, when Jupiter enters Gemini for a year. Late May through the first half of June will feature both Venus and Jupiter in Gemini, a lovely time for personal expansion of all kinds (and also conveniently during Madagascar’s dry season). June 3 to 17 also features Mercury flitting through Gemini, which bodes well for hiccup-free travels and stimulating conversation.

Sustainability and the privacy of exclusive islands are draws of the Red Sea.

Sustainability and the privacy of exclusive islands are draws of the Red Sea.

Cancer: The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia

All you really need at the end of the day is good food, good company, a body of water next to you, and a sense of protection. You might be interested to know that there are a number of new hotels opening their doors next year in Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea that are part of a coordinated sustainable tourism development—potentially welcome news for a region known for its untouched desert and coral reefs that shelter several endangered species. Of the 90 islands in the area, only 22 are marked for development, and nine will be protected conservation areas. Those that will be open to tourists are to be powered by 100 percent renewable energy—solar panels, the world’s first zero-carbon 5G network, local sourcing, smart waste management, electric vehicles, and hydrogen-powered sea planes are part of the blueprint for this ambitious project that hopes to become a hub for regenerative tourism.

Among the new hotels set to open its doors in 2024 is the St. Regis Red Sea Resort , with accommodations you might appreciate for their relatively secluded villas on a private island (and access to an array of environmentally safe water sports). Although you’re sure to enjoy an excursion during your birthday season this year (particularly between June 17 and July 11, when Venus is in Cancer), things get very hot in Saudi Arabia this time of year. Try going during Pisces Season instead (February 19 - March 20), a time of the year that always highlights your openness to adventure and desire to see the world.

For nonstop culture Accra is a nobrainer—and there's even more happening in 2024.

For non-stop culture, Accra is a no-brainer—and there's even more happening in 2024.

Leo: Accra, Ghana

Although you like a chill, relaxing vacation as much as anyone else, it’s the lively, heart-quickening nightlife destinations that are really your speed. For a 2024 party pilgrimage where you can feel glamorous and alive, check out Accra, Ghana , home of the AfroFuture music festival (previously Afrochella) and a vibrant food scene. Accra is quickly becoming the epicenter of a pan-African cultural renaissance, so even if you miss out on the music festival, you’ll still be in good company: lots of interesting pop-up restaurants, museums, and nightclubs are there to populate your itinerary with. There are plenty of additional reasons to want to go next year, including the opening of the Ghana Food Movement’s Link-up Kitchen in May, which will host pop-ups featuring music from local DJs and multi course dinners with local ingredients. You can also be one of the first guests to stay at the brand new Hilton Accra Cantonments .

article image

AfroFuture generally takes place at the end of December, so you have time to plan your trip if that’s what you’re interested in. Be forewarned, though—there’s a Mars Retrograde in Leo beginning that month! This isn’t a total dealbreaker for travel, but it’s probably not going to be the most carefree time for you astrologically. If you don’t mind going during rainy/humid season, you’ll feel significantly more energized by travel in May, with Mars in Aries transiting your ninth house of adventure. You could also make it an early birthday present for yourself if you go while Venus is in Leo (between July 11 - August 5), which lets you bask in the good lighting before Mercury Retrograde starts acting up.

Indigenousled wildlife excursions like polar bearwatching are just part of Quebec's appeal.

Indigenous-led wildlife excursions, like polar bear-watching, are just part of Quebec's appeal.

Virgo: Quebec, Canada

You thrive best when you get periodic breaks from the modern world—with opportunities to re-balance your nervous system in nature’s many paradises. When the great outdoors beckons this year, set your sights on Quebec . Montreal magnetizes visitors for all the obvious reasons, but the province’s northern regions will make you feel like you’re miles away from civilization (in all the best ways). If you prefer some company beyond just the musk ox, you can also elect to go on various Indigenous-led cultural immersions, like polar bear-watching with Inuit guides and spotting beluga whales with the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation, or decompressing at a Mohawk-run brewery. The Contemporary Native Art Biennial will be held in Montreal from May to June 2024.

Your best travel astrology this year arrives in late April and May, when there’ll be a gorgeous stellium of planets transiting Taurus, your ninth house of long journeys and discovery. This bodes well for not just venturing beyond your usual stomping grounds, but also having profound spiritual experiences along the way, particularly thanks to the natural beauty around you. This hits the relative sweet spot between being warm enough to enjoy Canada’s reaches comfortably, but still securely in the shoulder season to avoid peak season prices. If you need a break from roughing it and happen to end up in the Quebec City region, book a stay at the Hôtel-Musée Premières Nations .

A diverse set of landscapes—and outdoors experiences—await on New Zealand's South Island.

Libra: South Island, New Zealand

Get ready to put some mileage on your luggage , because 2024 is going to be an exciting year for your world travels. After Jupiter enters Gemini on May 25th, you’ll be on a year-long pilgrimage to see the world, expand your horizons, and broaden your perspective on everything. Preferably, you’ll get to do this in locations that feed your intellectual curiosity and stimulate your appetite for variety and diversity—like South Island, New Zealand , for example. South Island has breathtaking landscapes, and is populated with rainforests and snowcapped mountain peaks alike. If you consider yourself a hiker , a 38-mile-long trail on Tuatapere Hump Ridge opens in October, which will be New Zealand’s 11th Great Walk. Opening in stages in 2024 are also four new immersive visitor centers dedicated to Māori history, brought to you by the Ngāi Tahu tribe, and Wētā Workshop, the visual effects studio behind Lord of the Rings.

An interior of a dinning room.

If you’d rather take in the beautiful wilderness without putting in all that work, save your visit for the end of 2024, when the upscale Flockhill Lodge opens 14 new villas and an on-site restaurant led by Kiwi chef Taylor Cullen. As for timing, you’ve got a whole year—May 2024 to June 2025—to make the most of this Jupiter transit, but late May through the first half of June look particularly nice for travel, as you’ll get Venus and Jupiter travailing through your 9th house together. If you book between June 3 and 17, you’ll also get the added delight of Mercury in Gemini, which will promote easy-breezy flight connections and stimulating conversations. This is during New Zealand’s winter, which is ideal if you’re interested in skiing or enjoying snowy mountain ranges.

Soak in ancient history—and modern art—in storied Guatemala.

Soak in ancient history—and modern art—in storied Guatemala.

Scorpio: Guatemala

Sure, you like a good mystery, but what really draws your interest when you travel are destinations that are steeped in history—preferably with rich, delicious culinary traditions. Could we interest you in a trip to Guatemala in 2024? With new flights and cruise itineraries being added next year that will make Guatemala even more accessible, this might be the right time to get your fill of ancient Mayan ruins, as well as the very contemporary art, cultural, and community spaces that are opening up across the country. For instance, Antigua’s new MUNAG (National Museum of Art Guatemala) is now open, and there are compelling art spaces and restaurants to check out in Guatemala City. If you’re in Antigua, you can even stay overnight in a combined artisan textile boutique slash two-bedroom casita that has a coffee and wine bar in the front (coming next fall from Luna Zorro).

Your best travel astrology this year comes in late June through early July, particularly between June 20 and July 11. This span of time features both the Sun and Venus sailing through Cancer, your ninth house of distant travel, learning, and spirituality. You’ll be simultaneously in the mood to venture beyond the familiar, and also predisposed to making new friends who feel like family. This is technically during Guatemala’s rainy season, but temperatures are not too high, and the rain typically comes in the afternoon, so you can plan your day around it. Plus, you’ll get the added benefits of visiting during low season—meaning fewer crowds to cramp your style.

Find adrenalinepumping excursions alongside rich cultural festivals in Mongolia.

Find adrenaline-pumping excursions alongside rich cultural festivals in Mongolia.

Sagittarius: Mongolia

Three words: rugged, horses, and archery. Interested? Then you might be into the idea of visiting Mongolia in 2024. While its breathtaking landscapes used to mainly attract some of the more adrenaline-seeking travelers (and we’re not saying you don’t count among those ranks), Mongolia has been developing its tourism industry by adding new luxury lodging, immersive cultural experiences, expanding visa-free travel, and for the first time, a direct flight to the US in 2024. Once there, you’ll be spoiled for choice: the same operator that runs the Naadam Festival, a Mongolian traditional event that revolves around horse racing, wrestling, and archery, is expanding next year to include three-day archery training sessions, women-only retreats, and a digital nomad week.

If you decide to go for it, you can sleep in a traditional Mongolian ger, or yurt, at the newly opened Yeruu Lodge . There, you can also get your fill of horseback riding, kayaking, yoga and meditation, archery, bocce, eagle hunting, riverside bonfires, and more. Your best travel astrology this year also falls smack in the middle of Mongolia’s summer, which is when you’ll get some of the best weather. Go during Leo Season, a time of year that always brings out your appreciation for travel and foreign cultures—or better yet, go when Venus is in Leo, between July 11 and August 5th, so you can get in and get out before Mercury Retrograde starts (which isn’t a dealbreaker, by the way, if you do decide to go later in August).

Hills with tea plantation at misty morning in Sri Lanka.

Unwind in Sri Lanka, where a wellness boom means relaxation isn't hard to come by.

Capricorn: Sri Lanka

You’re probably tired of being pegged as the workhorse of the zodiac, but one thing you probably can’t argue with is a deep desire to relax and decompress. For you, travel is an opportunity to bring your inner and outer world into alignment and detox from the various stresses around you. A healing retreat is probably up your alley, which means Sri Lanka might be the place for you in 2024. There is currently a wellness boom in Sri Lanka, and when you tire of yoga and reiki, there is also the return of the Galle Literary Festival, a new food event spotlighting a number of chefs, and 200 miles of hiking routes that take you through tea plantations, estates, shrines, villages, and forests of the highlands.

You’ll have your pick of retreats and accommodations to choose from, but a well-established one is Kalukanda House , a villa in the surf town of Weligama where you can get your fill of yoga, breath work, reiki, and Ayurverdic readings. Astrologically, your best time to travel this year comes during the first half of September, which features the Sun in Virgo (your ninth house of travel and spirituality) and Venus strongly positioned in Libra at the highest point in your chart. This also conveniently lets you just narrowly avoid Sri Lanka’s two monsoon seasons.

Ever-cool Santa Fe has plenty of art and culture to offer, with the 100th anniversary of the Burning of the Zozobra taking place in 2024.

Aquarius: Santa Fe, New Mexico

No, you’re not about to make a beeline to the most overcrowded, overhyped tourist destination anytime soon. Yes, you still like a good artsy, fashionable jaunt—maybe just one with a little more niche appeal. Have you considered Santa Fe, New Mexico ? If counterculture and a thriving art scene are selling points to you, Santa Fe will win you over in 2024. Not only is it the 100th anniversary of the Burning of the Zozobra (so, they’ve been burning effigies way before Burning Man became a thing), but there’ll also be lots of new traditions being seeded next year: the first-ever Santa Fe Indigenous Fashion Week launching in May, as well as the Indigenous Art Fair Contemporary rolling out in August. There’s also cool programming at the Vladem Contemporary, the city’s first new major museum in more than a decade. For a stay that bridges past and present, rest your head at the 30-year-old Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi , or the 135-year-old Inn of the Turquoise Bear .

article image

As for timing, capturing some nice Libra transits will bring out the part of you that seeks adventure, and will also complement any trip that revolves around art and culture. In this sense, you have two decent options during the fall, which is also the best part of the year to visit Santa Fe. You could aim for the first half of September, which features Venus transiting Libra (but is right before the eclipses start up on the 18th), or sometime between October 4 and 22, while the Sun is in Libra (but after the eclipses).

Strike a balance between thrillseeking and beachhitting in French Polynesia.

Strike a balance between thrill-seeking and beach-hitting in French Polynesia.

Pisces: French Polynesia

Your perfect vacation recipe: opportunities to bliss out or seek thrills, and easy access to a big body of water. Across French Polynesia ’s 118 islands, you can spot regenerative, sustainable tourism in action—or at least in process. The beautiful nature is reason enough to visit, and there are conservation groups working to plant heat-resilient coral reefs and upcycling abandoned pearl farms for coral restoration. If you happen to stay at the Four Seasons Resort in Bora Bora, you’ll be able to enjoy a brand new botanical tour to get to know the local flora and fauna. If you’re a surfer ? You’ll have no trouble finding big, adrenaline-pumping waves (no wonder the surfing portion of the 2024 Paris Olympics are set to take place here).

Generally speaking, Scorpio Season (October 22 to November 21 in 2024) is your annual travel season, and if you go toward the beginning of that month, you’ll also get Venus in free-spirited Sagittarius. You might get more enjoyment out of travel during this year’s Cancer Season, however, which lights up your fifth house of recreation and pleasure. Ideally, go between the second half of June and the first half of July, while Venus is also in Cancer. This takes place during Polynesia’s winter, which will also give you better weather.

True to their sun sign, Pisceans love water and are likely to head straight to coastal areas, lakes, or indulge in experiences like cruises. They usually end up making spontaneous, yet brilliant plans at the eleventh hour. They may just throw in some clothes in a rucksack, grab a map, and hit the road! They tend to go with the flow and don’t prefer making lengthy, or any schedules at all. They generally love to travel with their friends, family, or partner.

Ideal Destinations For Pisces:

It’s not uncommon to find Taurians getting a spa massage at a beachside resort, getting served tea or coffee at the balcony of a treehouse in the hills, or shopping away in the posh streets of Milan. The best way to get in their good book is to take them to places with plush surroundings, pleasing experiences, and excellent food!

You just won’t see them initiating any travel plans or making the bookings, and you’d mostly just spot them on business trips and forced family vacations. Virgos are the typical ‘strike-off-the-list’ kind of travelers who maintain a note of all the places they’ve visited like it’s an assignment!

They also love to please their companions! Librans often worry themselves sick over the apprehension of whether their travel buddies are having fun or not!

Ideal Destinations For Libra:

  • Buenos Aires

Your Zodiac Sign, Explained: What It Means for Your Personality and Who You're Compatible With

Your zodiac sign is “you at your core,” according to astrologer Gogo Akopyan

Nicole Briese is a contributing writer at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since 2022. Her work has previously appeared in Us Weekly, Brides and MTV News.

Chloe Jeong/PEOPLE

Your zodiac sign can tell you a lot about your personality, from what you need to shine your brightest to how you go after your goals.

Determined by the constellation the sun was positioned in when you were born, your zodiac sign — also called your sun sign — is considered the main piece in your birth chart and the one most closely connected to how you behave.

“It’s you at your core,” says California-based astrologer Gogo Akopyan of Lilith on Top Astrology , who has been practicing for more than 11 years. “It’s working in the background always.”

Your zodiac sign may also give you some insight into your love life. Los Angeles-based astrologer and author Chani Nicholas warns against choosing a partner based on sun sign compatibility, however, saying that it’s not an accurate way to determine whether or not you’ll click with someone.

“You have to look at [each] person’s whole entire chart ,” she tells PEOPLE, which includes their moon and rising signs too.

Still, she notes that the element that your sign corresponds to — Earth, Air, Fire and Water — may hold a clue as to the sign you might click with most strongly.

As Akopyan and Nicholas both note, your zodiac sign isn’t the deciding factor for your personality: your sun sign is merely “one fraction of many different things” that an astrologer might look at when doing a reading.

Keep reading to find out more about the 12 zodiac signs, including the birth dates for each one, their personality traits and their potential compatibility with other signs.

Dates: March 21 to April 19

Characteristics.

Think of Aries as the “doers” of the zodiac. “Aries people are here to initiate action,” Nicholas tells PEOPLE. Because of this, she says those born under this sign tend to act with urgency.

“People with the sun in Aries will shine when they take appropriate risks that help them to grow,” she says. “They need a challenge to dig into and they will always be pushing the envelope.”

Emotionally, Akopyan says that Aries signs are ruled by Mars, the Roman god of war and agriculture, a fact that may lend itself to the fiery nature of this zodiac. “They’re the red planet, so they can be temperamental ... but usually, when they do erupt, it’s pretty quick, and they get over it just as quickly as it began,” she says.

Akopyan points out that those with Aries signs may also be athletically inclined. “They like to be in movement,” she says.

Compatibility

Since Aries falls under the element of Fire, Nicholas says they may go well with the Air signs of Gemini, Libra or Aquarius.

These signs not only balance out their fiery temperaments, according to Akopyan, but work to keep the risk-taking Aries on their toes.

“Air is intellectualism, so they stimulate their minds, but they’re also lighthearted in nature,” she explains, adding, “The highest ... marriage rate compatibility for an Aries would be an Aquarius.”

Dates: April 20 to May 20

According to Nicholas, those in the sign of Taurus are characterized as “being productive, being steady, being generally focused on things that are pleasing [and] sharing the sweet and simple pleasures of life.”

In their relationships, Akopyan says the Taurus is “loyal to a fault,” though they may be seen as shallow due to what she calls their “need for security.” Akopyan attributes this to the fact that Taurus is ruled over by the second house, which relates to finances.

Houses represent where the sun, moon and the planets were in the sky when you were born and “set the stage” for your astrological chart, according to Akopyan. What’s more, she says each sign will bring out themes that accompany each house.

“Money is very practical [and] they’re super practical people,” she says of those born under Taurus.

As Nicholas explains, the Earth sign of Taurus may find their perfect match in a Water sign (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces).

Akopyan points out that a Taurus, who is ruled by the planet of Venus, may also be intrigued by an Aries. “It’s because in mythology, Venus [had a relationship with] Mars, and Mars rules over Aries,” she explains.

Taurus may also find themselves attracted to an Aquarius, but that love may be unrequited. “[Taurus is] probably the most conservative sign,” she says. “if you’re more of ... a progressive sort of sign, like Aquarius, you’re not gonna like that.”

Dates: May 21 to June 20

“Gemini shine through being able to exchange interesting tidbits, through conversing, communicating [and] writing,” Nicholas tells PEOPLE. She adds: “[They] need a lot of variety in their days and in their life. They need to follow their [curiosity].”

As with the other signs, Akopyan points to Gemini's ruling planet to shed light on their standout traits. “They’re ruled by Mercury, the god of communication, so it’s very important for them to communicate [and] to have an outlet for communication,” she says.

It should come as no surprise that this talkative sign also loves going out. “They’re social creatures, they’re social butterflies, they like to meet new people,” Akopyan shares.

They’re also gifted when it comes to adapting to new environments. Represented by twins, which can sometimes be misinterpreted as having “two faces,” Gemini “can change their personality type based on who they’re talking to,” says Akopyan. “Their ability to relate to anybody is just exceptional. ... They can wear many masks.”

According to Akopyan, the Air sign of Gemini is “one of the most noncommittal signs in astrology” because they tend to bore easily. The signs that will keep them on their toes may include their Fire counterpart of Aries, per Nicholas, but also other Geminis.

“That’s the one sign that can date their sign effortlessly,” Akopyan says. “They’re ... the twin, in search of the twin — that’s when that comes in.”

Given their sociability and need for communication, Gemini may also connect with a partner-driven Libra. “They get married to Libras,” Akopyan tells PEOPLE.

Dates: June 21 to July 22

Cancers are the nurturers of the zodiac, according to Nicholas. “Cancer shine when they can care for and nurture ... [the people in their life],” she says. “They need to find a place in the world where that is valued.”

Ruled by the moon, which changes quickly and has different phases, Akopyan says Cancers “can come off very emotional — moody, even.”

Don’t mistake this sign for a pushover, however: “People tend to underestimate them because they’re so sensitive, but then the crab legs come out,” she says. “They can be a very passionate people.”

Earthy Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn may be compatible with Cancer signs, per Nicholas.

Akopyan suggests that the fellow water sign of Pisces might make a better match. “Pisces would be a really good match for a Cancer,” she tells PEOPLE. “They’re both water signs, they’re both emotional, they’re able to both be there for each other.”

Dates: July 23 to August 22

Per Nicholas, Leos “lead and shine when they find places in their world [that] they can demonstrate their confidence, pull focus and get attention for being themselves.”

As she points out, the Leo sign is “one of the strongest places the sun can be in besides Aries. [Leo] needs to be a bold, confident leader.”

Like the luminary sun that rules them, Akopyan says Leos “crave that sunlight." She adds, "When they walk in a room, [they tend to] be that sunlight for people, and they radiate this … sunny disposition."

According to Akopyan, Leos are one of the more creative signs of the zodiac. “They’re very theatrical and passionate and dramatic, so they really do well in ... theater arts and acting, where they can let these passions fly.”

The Fire sign of Leo could go for the Air signs of Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, based on Nicholas’ analysis of the elements’ compatibilities, particularly with regard to the latter sign, which Akopyan says can fan Leo’s fiery flames.

They also have a surprising match in the other Fire signs of Aries and Sagittarius. “Fire signs are different. They like to ignite the fire and they need that sort of ignition from another Fire sign,” she shares.

Dates: August 23 to September 22

Nicholas says that Virgos shine “when they are working at developing their skills and applying those skills toward being useful in the world." She explains, “They [excel] at understanding why a system functions, how it functions and how to work with it efficiently."

According to the You Were Born For This author, Virgos are “phenomenally hard-working people.” Nicholas adds, “They make hard work look easy."

A grounded Earth sign, “Virgos have this exceptional ability to focus and hone in on ... any craft they’re doing,” Akopyan explains. “They’re super successful, super strategic [and] very routine-oriented."

Nicholas says a Virgo might be a good match for a watery Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, though they may initially be attracted to those in need of more personal growth. “They’re a service sign ... so they tend to go for people who need fixing,” Akopyan says.

The Californian spiritual guide has also seen successful Virgo/Taurus pairings in her practice. “I’ve seen them with Taurus for long periods of time, because they share the same Earth element and they’re very similar in that sense,” she shares. "They go after their goals, they’re very successful and practical.”

Dates: September 23 to October 22

Unlike the other signs, Nicholas says that Libras “struggle to sometimes shine on their own.” That’s because the romantic Libra is hyper-focused on relationships.

“[They] genuinely find [a sense] of self ... being a partner, through being a friend, [a romantic] partner, [or a business partner],” Nicholas explains. “[They are] always looking to balance the situation [and] be in balance with other people.”

While this makes them great harmonists, Nicholas says it can be tough for Libras to get out from under their “people-pleasing habit.” That said, she calls Libra “one of the most charming, likable, pleasant sun signs out there.”

As both Nicholas and Akopyan point out, Libras are also great lovers of beauty and art, which is no surprise when considering that the sign is also ruled by the planet Venus, which rules the arts. “Libra is another very creative sign because of this,” Akopyan says.

Libras crave relationships and may be generally drawn to the Fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, based on the elements Nicholas cites.

Akopyan says that as such great lovers of beauty and companionship, some Libras may struggle to choose just one partner. “They have love to give to everybody,” she says.

Intellectually, she says, “they go for Geminis and Aquarius” — two signs that share their mental capacity.

Dates: October 23 to November 21

Nicholas states that Scorpios “shine [by] being mystical and intense and focused and determined. These are folks that are silent warriors." Oftentimes, they may be in a state of change. “It’s really important for them to go through the necessary self-transformations their life will bring them through,” Nicholas cautions.

Ruled by Pluto, which Akopyan points out is the furthest planet from the sun, the shadowy Scorpio may be more guarded than other signs of the zodiac.

“They’re able to tap into the dark recesses of the mind more easily than others,” Akopyan says, adding, “That also makes them very secretive in nature.”

Though Earthy Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are billed as top partners for the water sign of Scorpio, Akopyan says this sign in particular loves a good chase. And much like Pluto, the ruling god of the underworld, “They don’t take no for an answer” once they’ve set their sights on a target.

“They have that [Pluto-like] obsessive quality to them that could be entrancing and magnetic to the partners,” she notes.

Sagittarius

Dates: november 22 to december 21.

Hailed as “the nomads of the zodiac” by Akopyan, the wandering Sagittarius sign can be a hard one to control. “[It’s] like trying to corral a goldfish,” Nicholas says in agreement.

These outgoing adventurers tend to move with whatever inspires them. “They need to explore, they need freedom,” Nicholas elaborates. “They’re generally really interested in [big, huge, philosophical] questions, [like] ‘What is the meaning of life?’ ”

Avid fans of travel, fantasy and spirituality, Akopyan says the Sagittarius is a refined, philosophical type — something that fits right in with their ninth ruling house of higher knowledge.

A fire sign like the Sagittarius needs to be regularly stimulated. Air elements, like Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, are most apt to provide this, per Nicholas.

According to Akopyan, it also helps that Geminis are extremely similar in nature to Sagittarius. “I see that a lot in my practice, Geminis and Sagittarius partners,” she says. “It’s like they like dating themselves. ... Both signs will keep each other stimulated and energized. They [also] like to travel together.”

In addition, she says Sagittarius signs may find luck with Aries matches. “Sagittarius are the one other sign that likes to fight and argue as a ... means of avoiding boredom in the relationship,” she explains. “I think Aries provides that very effortlessly for them.”

Dates: December 22 to January 19

According to Nicholas, Capricorn is known for being really hard-working. “[They’re really goal-oriented,” she says. “[They’re] also known for being highly productive.”

Still, Nicholas says, “[there’s] quite a mystical quality to this sun sign.” After all, as she points out, the symbol for the Capricorn is a half goat, half fish creature. “The goat in the Capricorn will climb to the highest peaks of the mountain, while the fish will swim to the deepest depths of the sea. Integrity is the key [for folks with this sun sign],” she tells PEOPLE.

“From a young age, they just naturally take on responsibility,” Akopyan says of the Capricorn. “They’re very practical in nature.”

As for their mates, Akopyan says Capricorns need a partner who can keep up with — or at the very least, tolerate — their schedules. “They’re workaholics, so they like a partner that’s kind of similar to them,” she says.

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are their corresponding water signs, but according to Akopyan, Capricorns will sometimes avoid a water-based sign, deeming them too “emotional.”

“They like a straightforward partner, very practical, very down to earth,” she says. “Scorpio is an exception, because Scorpio’s ruler is Mars, so Scorpio isn’t as sappy as the Pisces and Cancer.”

Dates: January 20 to February 18

“The Aquarius is focused on the group,” says Nicholas. “[They’re] really good at ... being on the outskirts of society, so they can look in and understand the system and how everything is operating and how that impacts [others]. They’re really good at shining light on the whole and the collective.”

While she notes that they “can be a little remote,” they’re also “incredibly intelligent people.”

Akopyan adds, “They’re more collective-based, they’re more humanitarian-based, so they’ll help the community versus closer relationships. They see the bigger picture moreso. A lot of them work in social work.”

According to Akopyan, the intellectual Aquarius is also quite humorous. “Because they’re ruled by Uranus, they have this eccentricity about them, and they have this very keen sense of humor. It’s unmatched with the other signs, so they’re probably the funniest sign of the zodiac,” she says.

Going off of the elements, a good match for an Aquarius would be an Aries, Leo or Sagittarius. “[Sagittarius is] also intellectually and philosophically based, and so they make a really good match with Aquarius,” Akopyan says.

She believes that fellow Air signs Gemini and Libra might be even better partners. “Geminis are perfect for them,” she tells PEOPLE.

Dates: February 19 to March 20

As Nicholas explains, “Pisces shine by being poetic, altruistic, compassionate — they need to extend themselves out to others. ... I call them [the] Florence Nightingale of the zodiac,” she says. “[They are] the person [who] will take in every stray cat and goldfish ... and want to nurture. [They have] great empathy for suffering.”

Ruled by Neptune, which governs dreams, Akopyan says that Pisces is “very emotional [and] sensitive in nature. They can tap into their imagination very easily,” she adds.

“I would say the most romantic sign of all is Pisces,” Akopyan says, noting that they’re even more romantic than the Venus-ruled signs of Taurus and Libra.

As such, they’ll find themselves in harmony with a nurturing partner, like a Cancer, though their element would suggest an Earth-based sign that will complement their water, such as the Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn.

”They need someone gentle,” Akopyan stresses. “Fire signs are too brash for them.”

The Personality Traits of a Sagittarius, Explained

By Aliza Kelly

After you're done reading up on this zodiac sign's unique personality traits, catch up on this month's Sagittarius horoscope . For a fuller look at your year, check out our astrologer's 2024 Sagittarius horoscope predictions .

The final fire sign of the zodiac, Sagittarius traits are unlike any other sign of the zodiac; they're totally unique to this brazen spirit. As a professional astrologer with almost 10 years of experience, I can honestly say that there is no zodiac sign like Sagittarius. What makes Sagittarius so unique is its dynamic blend of passion, curiosity, intensity, and adaptability. Represented by the archer (a half-man, half-horse centaur), Sagittarius isn't afraid to use its bow and arrow to explore expansive terrain, seeking answers in places and spaces others wouldn’t dare venture. Whether they're white water rafting down a river in some undisclosed location or taking a pilgrimage to a sacred site to uncover secrets about an ancient civilization, Sagittarius’ quest for knowledge knows no bounds.

Sagittarius is a mutable sign, meaning it is associated with adaptability and flexibility. This perfectly reflects the archers' deep-rooted desire for change. Sagittarians are born to explore and it is critical that these archers have the freedom to roam. (Sagittarius rules the thighs, so these archers are always on the move.) Fueled by wanderlust, these archers can be found traversing all corners of the world on thrill-seeking expeditions, chasing after geographical, intellectual, and spiritual adventures. Sagittarians are on a perpetual quest for knowledge, which makes them incredible storytellers, entertainers, and creatives. It's not all fun and games, however: Sagittarius is notorious for its signature bluntness, and their "brutal honesty" can often lead to misunderstandings, communication breakdowns, and lots of hurt feelings. But the good news? Sagittarius doesn't take anything too seriously, so it's hard to stay mad at these wild optimists.

Sagittarius' ruling planet is Jupiter, the planet of abundance. You know the expression "go big or go home?" Yeah, that’s basically Jupiter's motto. Jupiter is all about excess — it expands anything it touches. So, naturally, this sign demands to have it all. The word "enough" doesn't exist within this sign's vocabulary. When Sagittarius is intrigued by something — whether it's a Wikipedia blackhole or a newfound internet crush — they go all in . That is, until something else catches their eye. As a mutable sign, Sagittarius don't stay on any single fascination for too long; these archers have so many passions and interests, they’re constantly bouncing from one idea to the next! What's more, since 2020, the solar and lunar eclipses have been activating the Gemini-Sagittarius axis, so there's been tons of movement and transformation for this fiery sign. Be sure to check this month's Sagittarius horoscope for insight on Sagittarius' latest journey.

What is a Sagittarius known for?

This should come as no surprise: Celebrity Sagittarius like Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, and Jay-Z are all known for their larger-than-life spirits. Sags are captivating characters who can light up any room with their exhilarating tales, infectious laughter, and dynamic charm. Effortlessly magnetic, they easily attract friends and lovers with their innate humor. Sagittarius are definitely the comedians of the zodiac, who infuse all of their conversations with their signature "no bullshit" attitude. They're fun, playful, and extremely philosophical. They seamlessly weave stories, fusing topics ranging from quantum physics to 18th-century literature to modern-day celebrity pop culture. Why? Sagittarius is interested in absolutely everything. Their spirit is fueled by their passion for knowledge, so they relish the opportunity to become experts in… well, anything.

What are Sagittarius's weaknesses?

Of course, Sagittarians must remember to keep their sharp tongues in check. Though they know a lot, they don't know everything — and if they're not careful, they can come off as pretentious or arrogant. Sagittarius has no filter (like, actually, it doesn't exist), which is what makes this fire sign so incredibly funny, intelligent, and dynamic, but is also why they can end up scorching even their closest friends and family on a bad day. What's more, because of Sagittarius' insatiable wanderlust, it's hard for this sign to commit. Consistency is a challenge for these fiery archers, and — although it doesn't come from an ill-intentioned place — other zodiac signs may perceive Sagittarius as flakey and unreliable. To mitigate this, Sagittarius should make sure they don't over-promise, which will inevitably lead to under-delivering. Instead, Sagittarius should make sure they're being extremely transparent about their existing responsibilities so that others can manage their expectations accordingly.

Who should Sagittarius avoid?

Sagittarius can get along with any zodiac sign—so long as the other person gives them the space to roam. Whether they’re meandering through philosophical conversations or backpacking across distant terrain, Sagittarians are fueled by freedom. Of course, not all signs can tolerate Sagittarians' thrill-seeking spirit. Sagittarius's unpredictable nature may make grounded Earth signs—Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn — a bit uneasy. Similarly, the emotional water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces — might take Sagittarius's blunt commentary a bit too personally, resulting in lots of hurt feelings. Although Sagittarius can work with any zodiac sign, it must be extra careful with friends and lovers who could use a bit more empathy.

Who’s the best match for Sagittarius?

Romantically, Sagittarians are seeing a co-pilot: These adventurous lovers resent any boundaries, so constant motion is essential in any Sag relationship. If you are lucky enough to link up with one of these archers, be sure to buckle up and have your passport ready. Fellow fire signs — Aries and Leo — are attracted to Sagittarius' humor, wit, and fiery passion, so Sagittarius will often ignite connections with these dynamic spark plugs. The air signs — Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius — also fan Sagittarius' flame: The air signs are intellectual, social, and curious, so they find Sagittarius’ adventurous nature to be extremely attractive. When teaming up with this vivacious sign, be sure to buckle up. It's always a wild ride.

Resourceful and self-reliant, Scorpios (born Oct. 23 through Nov. 21) love to take control of whatever situation is at hand. And, while they love a challenge, having the time to de-stress is imperative for their well-being. Striking a balance of blissful downtime and the option to enjoy endless activities is what's most important for a Scorpio's solo journey.

Find both yin and yang in Kyoto. With hundreds of Buddhist temples to explore, Shintō shrines to gaze upon, and mysterious places like the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove to lose yourself in, a Scorpio will feel centered and restored. Kyoto's "geisha district," is an example of the "yang" in this equation. It has countless teahouses, clubs, and restaurants to keep you busy.

Sagittarius: South Island, New Zealand

With a hunger for learning and a need for exploring, a Sagittarius (born Nov. 22 through Dec. 21) has a strong desire for thrilling escapades and mental stimulation. Their biggest fear is boredom, so this astrological sign won't think twice about taking a journey to a new destination alone.

Bungee jump, hike, or kayak your way through New Zealand's South Island, where adventure is seemingly everywhere you turn. See marine life from whales to penguins in Kaikoura, jump off the Kawarau Bridge outside of Queenstown, or walk in the shadow of the highest peak in the Southern Alps, Aoraki/Mount Cook. It's history, beauty, and adventure all rolled into one glorious island.
