First Thing in the Morning: Door County Maritime Museum

If you’re planning a day trip to Door County, Wisconsin, I recommend starting in Sturgeon Bay at the Door County Maritime Museum . This museum provides a great introduction to the unique history, ecology, and economy of the area, with a focus on its maritime heritage. It opens at 9 AM, and I suggest arriving early to avoid crowds and make the most of your visit.

The exhibits cover a wide range of topics, including shipwrecks, commercial fishing, and the role of the Coast Guard in the region. You’ll also learn about the geology and ecology of Door County, which is shaped by its location on a narrow peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan.

I found the museum to be fascinating and informative, and I recommend allowing yourself about an hour and a half to explore the exhibits fully.

Mid-Morning Fun: The Farm in Door County or Cave Point County Park

After spending some time at the Door County Maritime Museum, you might be ready for some mid-morning fun. Fortunately, there are two great options nearby: The Farm in Door County and Cave Point County Park.

Picture depicting petting a horse at The Farm in Door County.

The Farm in Door County is a living museum of rural America, showcasing life on a working farm in the early 1900s. It’s a great spot to learn about traditional farming methods, interact with farm animals, and even try your hand at milking a goat. The farm’s interpreters are knowledgeable and engaging, and I found the experience to be both educational and entertaining.

  • Cave Point County Park

Alternatively, if you’re looking for some natural beauty, Cave Point County Park is a must-see. The park features stunning views of Lake Michigan, with rugged cliffs and caves that are a popular spot for kayaking and swimming. I loved walking along the trails and taking in the stunning scenery. It’s a great spot to appreciate the natural beauty of Door County.

Whichever option you choose, you can’t go wrong. Whether you’re interested in history or nature, these mid-morning spots are sure to delight.

Refuel at Baileys Harbor for Lunch

Collage with the Cana Island Lighthouse, cherry orchard, and a sunrise over Lake Michigan. Superimposed text says: "Baileys Harbor, WI."

By midday, you might be starting to feel hungry. If you’re in the Baileys Harbor area, there are several excellent options for a delicious lunch. I recommend checking out one of the local favorites, such as Chives, Cornerstone Pub, or AC Tap.

Chives is a contemporary American restaurant that emphasizes locally sourced ingredients, creative flavor combinations, and beautiful plating. The menu changes frequently, but you can expect dishes like seared scallops, lamb chops, and artisanal cheese plates.

Cornerstone Pub is a cozy, family-friendly spot that serves up classic pub fare with a twist. The burgers are juicy, the fish fry is crispy, and the homemade pizzas are a must-try. It’s a great option for a casual lunch with friends or family.

Finally, AC Tap is a beloved dive bar that’s known for its friendly atmosphere, cold beer, and hearty sandwiches. The menu features classic sandwiches like Reubens and Philly cheesesteaks, as well as more unusual options like pulled pork grilled cheese. It’s the perfect spot to grab a quick bite and soak up some local color.

No matter which restaurant you choose, you’re sure to find a satisfying meal in Baileys Harbor .

Early Afternoon: Climb to New Heights at Cana Island Lighthouse

Picture of Cana Island Lighthouse in Door County Wisconsin.

After a delicious lunch in Baileys Harbor, it’s time to continue your Door County adventure. I recommend making your way to Cana Island Lighthouse for some mid-afternoon fun.

The lighthouse is a historic landmark that dates back to 1869 and has been beautifully preserved over the years. It’s located on a small island that’s accessible via a causeway, which adds to the sense of adventure.

Once you arrive, you can climb the 97 steps to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding landscape. It’s a bit of a workout, but the views are well worth the effort. Along the way, you’ll learn about the history of the lighthouse and its important role in maritime navigation in the area.

Even if you’re not up for the climb, the lighthouse and its grounds are still worth exploring. There are several interpretive exhibits that provide fascinating insights into life at the lighthouse and the history of the area.

Overall, a visit to Cana Island Lighthouse is a great way to spend a mid-afternoon in Door County.

Late Afternoon: Explore Downtown Sister Bay and Ephraim

Late afternoon is the perfect time to explore some of the charming towns that make up Door County. One of my favorite combinations is downtown Sister Bay and Ephraim, which offer a variety of sights and experiences.

Collage with a sailboat, goat, and shoreline scene along Green Bay in Door County. Superimposed text reads: Sister Bay, WI.

In Sister Bay , take a leisurely stroll through the town’s picturesque streets , checking out the unique shops and boutiques. Be sure to stop by the marina to admire the luxurious yachts, and don’t miss the famous goats on the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant. You can even take a picture with the goats or watch them graze on the grass-covered roof.

Collage of a cherry orchard, Anderson's Dock, and a sunset over Green Bay with the text superimposed: Ephraim, WI

After Sister Bay, make your way to nearby Ephraim , a quaint town known for its picturesque harbor and historic Anderson’s Dock. The dock is adorned with colorful graffiti and folk art, adding to its already picturesque charm. Every year, artists from all over the country come to paint the dock , creating a constantly changing canvas of vibrant colors and creative designs.

Take your time to appreciate the unique artistry and creativity of the various graffiti and folk art pieces as you walk along the dock. It’s truly a unique and fascinating experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

As you wander through these charming towns, you’ll soak up the laid-back atmosphere and friendly locals that make Door County so special.

Overall, a visit to downtown Sister Bay and Ephraim is the perfect way to spend a relaxing late afternoon in Door County.

Dinner in Fish Creek

Collage with a sunset over Green Bay, a map of Door County, a mother and child in Green Bay, and superimposed text: Fish Creek, WI.

As the day winds down, it’s time to start thinking about dinner. Luckily, Fish Creek has plenty of excellent options to choose from. Known for its charming streets and beautiful waterfront views, this town is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal.

Some of the most popular restaurants in Fish Creek include Alexander’s, the English Inn, and Wild Tomato. Alexander’s is known for its fresh seafood and elegant atmosphere, while the English Inn offers traditional British fare in a cozy setting. If you’re in the mood for pizza, Wild Tomato is the place to be, with its delicious wood-fired pizzas and creative toppings.

No matter where you choose to eat, be sure to take a leisurely stroll through the town after dinner. The streets of Fish Creek are lined with quaint shops and galleries, and the waterfront views are simply stunning.

As the sun sets over the water and the sky turns shades of orange and pink, you’ll be glad you spent the day exploring the beautiful sights and experiences that Door County has to offer.

Evening: Peninsula Players

As the day comes to a close, there’s still plenty of fun to be had in Door County. One great way to cap off your day is by taking in a show at the Peninsula Players , one of the oldest resident summer theaters in the country.

The Peninsula Players is located on the shore of Green Bay, offering breathtaking views of the water and surrounding landscape. If you arrive early, you can soak up the magical pre-show atmosphere along the bay. The theater sets up campfires where you can sit and enjoy the warmth while the sun sets over the water. The famous “Air Conditioner” cocktails are also served, adding to the festive mood of the pre-show experience.

Once the show begins, you’ll be treated to a professional production featuring talented actors and crew members from all over the country. The theater is famous for its intimate setting and innovative staging, making for a truly unique and unforgettable theater-going experience.

  • Start your day at the Door County Maritime Museum, which opens at 9 AM.
  • Visit The Farm in Door County or Cave Point County Park mid-morning.
  • Eat lunch at popular restaurants in Baileys Harbor such as Chives, Cornerstone Pub, and AC Tap.
  • Visit the Cana Island Lighthouse for a picturesque view of Lake Michigan in the mid-afternoon.

A Weekend in Door County: Tips for First-timers

clouds over boats in a marina

As you research your Door County itinerary, a few questions will probably pop up:

When is the best time to visit Door County?

  • Which Door County town is the best to stay in?
  • With only a weekend in Door County, what are the can’t-miss sights and activities?

This article aims to answer some of your most common questions and gives an overview for Door County first-timers.

Door County Basics

Door County is the easternmost county in Wisconsin located on the Door Peninsula. If you picture the shape of Wisconsin as your left hand – the peninsula is the thumb that sticks out.

Door County is 70 miles long and 18 miles wide at its base, narrowing as you head north. The water of Green Bay borders the western side of the peninsula. The north and eastern sides look out into Lake Michigan.

With 300 miles of shoreline, Door County is a naturally scenic weekend escape attracting 2 million visitors a year. Many make their way from the Midwest as Door County is an easy 2.5-hour drive from Milwaukee, less than 4 hours from Chicago, and less than 5 hours from Minneapolis.

(Another scenic Midwest destination to check out is Galena, Illinois. Mississippi views, restaurants, shops and wineries make it a great weekend getaway, too!)

Common Questions

You may already have your specific weekend locked in for a Door County visit or maybe you are flexible with your dates – either way, there are some things to keep in mind.

The most popular time for a Door County visit is May through October when three-quarters of the tourists make their way to the area.

Spring offers the beauty of apple and cherry blossoms and wildflowers with fewer crowds, although the weather can still be cool and wet.

Summer brings hotter temperatures – ideal for water sports and swimming, but you’ll also encounter more bugs, bigger crowds and higher prices during this peak time.

windy road in fall

Winter sees the season’s die-hards who come for ice fishing, snow shoeing and exploring the frozen shoreline.

Weekends are more packed than weekdays as you may guess. But even weekdays can be busy during peak periods. Visiting during peak tourist times of late spring, summer or during fall events, plan for the place to be crowded and keep these things in mind:

  • Make lodging reservations in advance. Places can book up fast.
  • Be careful when driving through the small towns of Door County. Crowds of people will be walking up and down the sidewalks, some venturing into the streets and trying to cross in front of you. Be patient, drive with caution, and give yourself extra time.
  • With so many cars and people lining the streets, you may think parking would be a nightmare. But between street parking and lots scattered throughout, the towns provide a good deal of parking for the amount of visitors. You shouldn’t have to drive around too long before a spot opens up.
  • Door County has plenty of delicious dining options, but during peak tourist season restaurants will be crowded. You’ll likely have a wait to get seated at a restaurant that doesn’t take reservations. In my experience the time goes fairly quickly, though, especially since you have a scenic outdoor setting to enjoy as you wait.

Which town is the best to stay in?

Where to stay in Door County is usually a big question for first-timers to the area. The best advice I received during my first trip to Door County was to look at a map of the Door Peninsula and envision a triangle from Baileys Harbor north to Sister Bay , south through Fish Creek to Egg Harbor and back to Bailey’s Harbor.

map of door county wisconsin

The city of Sturgeon Bay , south of the triangle, is the entrance to Door County. While it’s a nice city, it’s much bigger than the quaint towns farther north and not the most convenient to explore the peninsula.

North of the triangle are more remote towns and Northport Pier, which provides access to the Washington Island ferry . While you may decide to include a trip to Washington Island in your weekend itinerary, I don’t recommend it. It will take a big chunk of time out of your weekend in Door County. Your time is better spent exploring more accessible parts of the region.

motel sign with American flag no vacancy

In the end it doesn’t matter too much which town you stay in because you’ll likely be exploring all of them. The towns are within an easy drive of each other and all deliver a variety of unique experiences.

With only a weekend in Door County, what are the can’t miss sights and activities?

People venture to Door County for different reasons and with different interests. You may want to spend as much time as possible on a golf course, touring lighthouses, or hiking bluffs along the scenic shoreline. Maybe unique boutiques are your thing, sprinkled in with some wine tastings. Either way, your best bet is to prioritize the activities that mean the most to you.

Limited to just a weekend visit, you won’t get to see and do all that Door County has to offer, but to help with your itinerary, here are some popular experiences in Door County.

Explore Peninsula State Park.

Choosing an active adventure is a great way to see the stunning Door County scenery. You can rent paddleboards, kayaks, and bikes to head out on your own, or choose to take a guided tour. Even with just a weekend in Door County you have time to fit an adventure into your schedule. Tour companies, such as Door County Kayak Tours , provide kayak and E-bike excursions from 1.5-4 hours.

We are staying at Motel 57. Is that far from everything?

April 1, 2022 at 9:18 pm

Hi Sharon, It looks like Motel 57 is on the south side of Sturgeon Bay, which is the first town you come to in Door County. Sturgeon Bay is a nice city – larger than the other towns. It’s about a half hour from Egg Harbor and Bailey’s Harbor, and about 35 minutes from Peninsula State Park – just to give you an idea of the distance. The whole area is beautiful, but I do prefer the smaller towns further north which have a bit more charm.

Hi Deanne, Wondering if you could suggest any air b&b’s in one of those small towns with character that you are referring to? Or rental cabins on the water?? Thank you in advance!

May 15, 2022 at 6:30 pm

That really depends on the dates you are going, how many people you have, your budget, and your particular style. There are many places to choose from, but it really comes down to a personal preference. I would suggest checking on airbnb.com and filtering with your specific requirements! Good luck and have fun!

Hi. This was such a great article and primer for the area! I was wondering how you find the water temperature for swimming at the end of July. We are from NJ, so we are not used to exactly warm water. 😉

May 15, 2022 at 6:20 am

Here is a link to the current water temperature in Door County: https://seatemperature.info/sturgeon-bay-water-temperature.html And this link is the historical data for Door County water temperature in July the past two years. I really enjoy Door County Brewing located in Bailey’s Harbor. Good beer and fun atmosphere! As far as a scenic drive, the whole coastal byway is pretty ( https://doorcountycoastalbyway.org/ ) but the most iconic segment is Hwy 42 as you near the Washington Island ferry dock- between Timberline Road and Ports des Morts Drive. Hope that helps! Have a fun trip!

Where is the best place to stay for a 3 day visit

August 23, 2022 at 9:23 pm

Hi Amy, There are a variety of lodging options (hotels, airbnb’s, cabins, B&Bs, etc.) in the towns of Sister Bay, Bailey’s Harbor, Fish Creek, and Egg Harbor. These towns are the most convenient places to stay in my opinion. They are only a short drive from each other, too, so you’ll be able to experience all of the small town charm in each of them.

Are things still open the last weekend in October?

September 10, 2022 at 11:55 am

Hi Jason, Some places close mid-October, some after the end of October, and others stay open through the winter. For instance, Wilson’s Ice Cream in Ephraim closes for the season on Oct. 16, 2022. The last day for Cana Island Lighthouse is October 31, while some restaurants and bars stay open all year. It’s best to check the websites of each place you’re interested in. The good thing is that there is so much natural beauty and outdoor scenery to take in, which you can view any time! If you go, have a great time!

October 12, 2022 at 12:39 am

Just got back from spending a week in Sister Bay. Without doing a bunch of research ahead of time we hit all the places that you talked about with the exception of whitefish Dunes.

We had a fabulous time. You are so right about charming and quaint towns.

Seems like a field of dreams moment-no construction vehicles, no trash, no graffiti, with the exception of that one building that we all can paint on…, Minimal aggressive driving, minimal road closures, etc., hardly any stoplights & pleasant Wisconsinites everywhere. Really an absolutely awesome time.

Every town was charming, we hit four, five wineries a couple of breweries including the peach barn winery next in sister bay. We stayed a quarter mile from there.

We live south of Denver and while there are plenty of things I love about where we live, Door County will definitely be a vacation destination, especially during October.

October 12, 2022 at 9:17 am

Mark, I’m glad you had a great time experiencing Door County! October is a beautiful time of year to visit. Spread the word back in Colorado about our hidden gem as a great vacation getaway. 🙂

Hi, your site has been very helpful. We’re planning a visit to Door County in July of next year with 3 adults and 2 kids ages 13 and 10. Can you recommend some must-sees with kids? Both kids are outdoorsy. I was hoping to stay at a resort that included water activities but they are all booked.

July 6, 2023 at 4:40 pm

Hi Jenny, I highly recommend visiting The Farm in Sturgeon Bay. Kids (and adults) have fun bottle feeding baby goats and petting other barnyard animals – pigs, cows, chickens, etc. You can watch chicks hatch, too! It’s run by a lovely family and is a well-known attraction in the area. Since you’ll be in Door County in July, your family can go cherry picking if they’re ripe. That’s always fun. Hike in Cave Point and Peninsula State Park where there is a tall observation lookout. Even if you’re not able to stay at a resort with water activities, there are numerous beaches around and tons of water activities to do like kayaking, boating, paddle boarding, fishing, etc. Stop in to Wilson’s for some ice cream and see a movie at Skyway Drive-in Theatre near Ephraim. Hope you and your family enjoy your time in Door County!

February 24, 2024 at 1:15 pm

Hi Deanne! Thank you for all the information/ tips. I plan to look into all of them. We were able to rent a home in Fish Creek. Any thoughts/ recommendations in that area to do/ places to eat? All of these sweet towns seem fairly close to each other. I hope we have time to visit them all.

Thank you, Jenny

February 25, 2024 at 1:30 pm

Hi Jenny, Fish Creek is so cute. You’ll love it! There are a lot of boutiques and stores, so plan to do some shopping. For outdoor adventure, Peninsula State Park is right there and is so beautiful whether you drive through, hike, or camp. Wild Tomato is one of the best restaurants in the area. Their pizza is famous! (If someone in your group doesn’t like pizza, their chicken tenders are amazing, too.) Pelletier’s is another good restaurant known for their fish boils. And, yes, the towns are all close to each other so try to hit all of them. Hope you have a great time!

20 Amazing Things To Do In Door County, Wisconsin

door county one day trip

  • Destinations
  • Door County
  • United States

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In Door County, your eyes can behold undeniable beauty everywhere. About 4 hours north of Chicago and 3 hours north of Milwaukee, Door County is a 70-mile-long peninsula in northeastern Wisconsin. It’s long been called “The Cape Cod of the Midwest”

When you go, here are some amazing things to do.

1. Lake Michigan And Green Bay

Because Door County is a peninsula, it features miles and miles of shoreline. You’re never more than a 15-minute drive to the water. Go ahead, take off your shoes. Dip your toes in one of the Great Lakes and the bay of Green Bay.

Being this close to water also makes for great sunrise and sunset views. See Destination Door County’s recommendations for the best spots to see them.

Big Red Lighthouse in Sturgeon Bay, silhouetted against the rising sun.

2. Lighthouses Of Sturgeon Bay

With water everywhere, the peninsula has a long maritime history, and the Door County Maritime Museum honors that heritage. Visit a couple of the lighthouses in Sturgeon Bay that harken back to that time.

On the Lake Michigan side of the peninsula, you get a “two-for-one” opportunity. The 1899 Ship Canal Light sits on an active coast guard station that’s off-limits to visitors, but you can park your car, take photos, and walk out to a concrete pier head to see the North Pierhead Light — appropriately nicknamed Big Red. Go to the end for a great photo op of the iconic 1882 fog-signal light.

On the Green Bay side, you’ll find the 1883 Sherwood Point Light . While tricky to visit, it can be viewed from the water or up close during the annual Door County Lighthouse Festival which provides access to this and other locations not generally open to the public.

Pro Tip: Half an hour south of Sturgeon Bay, Joe Rouer’s is legendary with the locals (and not-so-locals) for simple, mouth-watering burgers. In Sturgeon Bay, grab a great lunch at The Bluefront Café for soups, sandwiches, salads, and wraps. For fine dining, you can’t go wrong with Donny’s Glidden Lodge Restaurant (reservations are a must).

3. Potawatomi State Park

In Sturgeon Bay, Potawatomi State Park is a popular choice for hiking and camping . The Daisy Field campground has two loops with 123 campsites, 40 with electricity. For hikers, Potawatomi is the home of the eastern trailhead of the Ice Age Trail National Scenic Trail . This amazing trail winds about 1,000 miles through Wisconsin. If that’s too much to bite off, you can hike the 2.8-mile stretch through the park.

4. Fresh Cherries And Apples

Door County is a big apple and cherry country (the fourth largest cherry-producing region in the nation). Stop at one of the many orchards and farm markets or gift shops as you drive north from Sturgeon Bay. Try freshly made donuts, cherry cider coolers, or cherry pie.

Pro Tip: Summer and fall color/harvest season are busy times of year. Roads and lodging can hardly contain the influx, which is why we like the shoulder season in April/May or September. October gets busy again with fall colors and festivals.

5. Wonderful Wineries

In a place with such an abundance of produce, it’s no surprise that Door County wineries produce wonderful fruit wines, as well as reds, whites, and ports. As of this writing, there are eight wineries in Door County, with more in the planning. Follow the Door County Wine Trail to visit them.

Pro Tip: Learn more about Door County wineries, breweries, distilleries and cider houses here .

6. Egg Harbor

Door County is drivable (when traffic isn’t bad), and the small towns are delightful. We made our home base in Egg Harbor and took day trips to explore all the peninsula has to offer. We rented a condo at the Landmark Resort , the biggest resort in Door County. Located on 40 wooded acres, it’s open year round and loaded with resort amenities.

Pro Tip: If you’re after a water view, book a condo on the highest floor you can find. We were at ground level and the grounds are beautiful, but if you’re facing the water, the higher the floor, the better the view.

"Living Canopy," mosaic egg sculpture in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.

Egg Harbor EGGstravaganza

Egg Harbor has a thing for, what else, eggs. All over town, indoors and outdoors, you’ll see over 20 large, decorated artwork eggs. Inspired artists used wood, copper, beads, glass, metals, and clay to create these masterpieces, originally part of a public art project called EGGstravaganza. We saw a wooden egg with flowers, a bird-themed mosaic, one made of copper encircled by wings that “flew” in the breeze, and even one shaped like a stegosaurus (or… stEGGosaurus).

One Barrel Brewing

One Barrel Brewing claims: “We brew unique beers, one barrel at a time.” This brewery also has wines, hard ciders, and snacks. They have a welcoming, expansive outdoor area with decks, couches, chairs, tables, umbrellas, and a couple of fire pits.

Hungry? Grab a bite at the nearby Shipwrecked Brew Pub . Try the fish and chips, or the fisherman’s (perch) sandwich.

Make a stop at Wood’s Orchard Market in Egg Harbor, too. It’s filled with local greatness like apple donuts, cherry pies (including half pies and slices) and cherry syrup (perfect on pancakes).

Goat on the roof at Al Johnson's in Sister Bay, Wisconsin.

7. Rooftop Goats In Sister Bay

It wouldn’t be Door County without a stop at Al Johnson’s restaurant to see the famous “goats on the roof” (usually late May to late October). It’s the kind of place where there’s always a line to eat because folks love the Swedish bakery items, authentic dishes, and novelty of the goats. They also have a great gift shop .

Pro Tip: Sister Bay is also one of several small towns that offer summertime Concerts in the Park , great for live music. The family-friendly musical performances feature a variety of bands.

View of the bay from Sunset Bike Trail in Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin.

8. Peninsula State Park

I call Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek the crown jewel of Door County. It has great biking and hiking, golfing, a new fire tower with panoramic views, and incredible sunsets.

Sunset Trail

This beautiful almost 10-mile trail has a paved/fine-gravel surface great for biking. The trail winds through the Weborg Marsh among tall cedars and maple trees. We took the opportunity to get off our bikes at scenic stops like Eagle Bluff Lighthouse , and just walk down to the shoreline. The water is amazingly clear; you can see every stone on the bottom.

Pro Tip: A state trail pass is required for cyclists age 16 or older. Didn’t bring your bike? Rentals are available in Fish Creek and at the Nicolet Beach concession stand.

Eagle Trail

This 2-mile hike features 150-foot rocky cliffs, woodland springs, forests, and plenty of roots and rocks to earn its “difficult” rating. (Difficult, but worth it!) Much of it takes you along the coastline with great views of Eagle Harbor.

Panoramic view from Eagle Tower's observation deck in Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin.

Eagle Tower

See sweeping panoramic views from the observation deck of Eagle Tower. You have two choices: Climb 100 steps up the tower, or, our preference, stroll along the 850-foot, ADA-accessible, tree-lined boardwalk to the top. Either way, from the 60-foot-high observation deck, you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the park, nearby islands, harbor towns, and the Upper Michigan shoreline.

Sven’s Bluff

Sven’s Bluff overlook gives you a beautiful vantage point to watch the sunset unfold. When we visited, four eagles soared overhead!

Northern Sky Theater

We didn’t attend, but the Northern Sky Theater within Peninsula State Park is very popular with theater-goers. With indoor and outdoor venues, standard or premium pricing, and a variety of shows, there’s something for everyone.

Pro Tip: All seating is assigned, and visitors are encouraged to buy tickets in advance over the phone or online.

Peninsula State Park Golf Course

If you enjoy golf, check out the golf courses of Door County, including one at Peninsula State Park. The same scenery that makes Door County a great place to hike, bike, and kayak (our favorites) also makes it great for golf.

9. Old Post Office Fish Boil

Make reservations at any of the wonderful fish boils of Door County. We enjoyed one at the Old Post Office in Ephraim. The Norwegian tradition means locally caught Lake Michigan whitefish, small potatoes, and onions are cooked outside in a big kettle over an open fire that eventually roars to a fiery finish. Then, it’s time to eat! Do it up right with a piece of Door County cherry pie ala mode for dessert. It’s another Door County “must-do.”

10. Wilson’s Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor

Wilson’s is another Door County classic. My husband ordered up a single scoop of Coconut Joy, and I ordered my favoritem, peanut butter chocolate. Their single scoops are huge (about half would have been enough!). Eat it outside and soak in more Eagle Harbor views.

11. Door County Bakery

Door County Bakery is acclaimed for its crunchy, fragrant Corsica bread — a combo of French bread dough with a blend of olive oils and sesame seeds, inspired by the island of Corsica, France. They accept phone orders for pick-up at their delicious bakery, or they’ll ship to you. As an alternative, buy Corsica STIX in most any gift shop in Door County. They are crispy bread chips, great with local cheeses, dips, or spreads.

12. Ferry To Washington Island

At the northern end of the peninsula, Gills Rock is the place to catch the Island Clipper passenger ferry for a 7-mile, 20 minute-ride that passes through the inevitable Porte Des Morts — “Death’s Door” — and past Pilot and Plum Island Lighthouses. We had smooth sailing on a beautiful mid-September morning. Alternatively, if you want to bring your car with you to the island, take the Washington Island Ferry , which departs from Northport just over 2 miles east of Gills Rock.

Pro Tip: Once on Washington Island, take the Karfi passenger-only ferry to the even more remote Rock Island , a pedestrian-only island offering a lighthouse and a state park with 10 miles of hiking trails. The Karfi is operated by the Washington Island Ferry Line and departs from Jackson Harbor.

13. Biking Washington Island

Washington Island is home to about 700 people but is an annual travel destination for thousands. We arrived in Detroit Harbor and set off on our bikes for a 22-mile ride. We passed small shops, churches, a tiny airport, and even Trueblood — an impressive performing arts center.

Pro Tip: Someone did their homework determining Door County biking routes and potential itineraries. Cyclists can take their pick of predetermined loop routes ( PDF ) for almost 300 miles of suggested cycling. We followed their Washington Island route, and it was great. (Perfect weather didn’t hurt, either!)

John's Garden Goodies in Washington Island, Wisconsin.

As we biked, we came across an honor-system farm stand called John’s Garden Goodies, featuring homemade and homegrown goodies: sauerkraut, dill pickles, pickled beets, island maple syrup, and fresh vegetables. This is the kind of “slice of life” stuff I love.

Best Biking Stops On Washington Island

Schoolhouse beach.

Schoolhouse beach was a beautiful stop on our ride, with its white rocks and, again, the crystal-clear water that is a trademark of Door County.

Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop

Washington Island is known for its fragrant lavender fields. By our trip in September, the fields of Fragrant Isle were post-peak but still beautiful. I could see why it’s a popular place for wedding photos when the lavender is in full bloom.

Hay wagon ride to Cana Island Lighthouse, Door County, Wisconsin.

14. Cana Island Lighthouse

At Cana Island lighthouse , step back in time to see the original home of the lighthouse keeper. Climb 97 steps on the tower’s spiral staircase to get to panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the shoreline. Due to high Lake Michigan levels, the causeway to Cana Island can be flooded, but with paid admission to the lighthouse, you can take a hay wagon ride to get there. Depending on water levels, walking across is an option if you brought waterproof boots!

North Bay from The Gordon Lodge, Door County, Wisconsin.

15. The Gordon Lodge

I like The Gordon Lodge , just north of Bailey’s Harbor, for the best panoramic view of North Bay and Lake Michigan. It’s a great place to order a cool drink, sit out on the deck, and enjoy the expansive views.

Kayaking the crystal-clear waters of Cave Point in Door County, Wisconsin.

16. Cave Point County Park

With water on both sides, it’s no surprise that water sports are popular in Door County. We loved kayaking at Cave Point County Park. Frankly, it’s hard to believe little Cave Point is only recognized as a county park. It features limestone caves and clear, almost Caribbean-looking waters that are deserving of higher notoriety and fame. Then again, maybe that’s just the way Wisconsin wants it. It’s a gem of Door County! You can’t beat the free admission either.

We booked  Peninsula Kayak Company for their 2-hour Cave Point Kayak Tour to see caves carved out by wind and water. The guide shared the history and geology of the area with us. I loved seeing the caves from the water, and we even kayaked into a few of them.

17. Whitefish Dunes State Park

Trek the half-mile hiking trail from Cave Point through birch, maple, and beech trees to the adjacent Whitefish Dunes State Park , which borders Cave Point County Park on three sides. The Dunes claim to fame is Old Baldy, the highest sand dune in the state, rising 93 feet.

Boardwalk to the Lower Range Light, Ridges Sanctuary, Door County, Wisconsin.

18. The Ridges Sanctuary

Wetlands and swales are the stars of the Ridges Sanctuary , along with the Upper Range and Lower Range lighthouses. Here, we liked walking the boardwalk to these lighthouses, along with a few of the hiking paths around the sanctuary’s 30 ridges and swales (formed by Lake Michigan over the past thousand years or so).

Pro Tip: There is a small admission fee at the Ridges.

Boardwalk to the overlook at Ellison Bay in Door County, Wisconsin.

19. Ellison Bay

A friend told me that the overlook at Ellison Bluff County Park is a must do. It was worth a stop to walk down the boardwalk and stairs to the lookout platform for striking views of 100-foot limestone bluffs and Ellison Bay.

20. “Dark Sky” Designated Newport State Park

Newport State Park (about 6 miles from Ellison Bay) is Wisconsin’s only wilderness park and a designated Dark Sky Park. With 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the views are beautiful by day, but at night, it apparently really shines. It’s one of only 48 parks in the world to earn the Dark Sky designation.

We saw this park during the day but didn’t return to see the Dark Sky features because we were staying in Egg Harbor, and it’s quite a distance to Newport, especially at night on rural roads.

The sun sets on another beautiful day in Door County, Wisconsin.

Door County is a place where memories are made. You can be as active as you want to be, or you can find a cozy corner to relax and connect with someone special.

Whatever you do, the sights, sounds, and scenery of the peninsula are good for the body and soul. This list will help you plan an itinerary that’s just right for you. Take your fill of all it has to offer — these amazing things to do in Door County can get you started.

Need A Door County, WI Weekend Itinerary? Try Ours.

  • Updated: 12/27/2023

Door County is a destination I have heard about for years . Living in Chicago, we have friends whose families have spent summers there. And we know others who keep going back for quick trips.

After hearing so much about it, we finally carved out time to go.

Table Of Contents

With input from a friend who lives full time in the “Door”, I found and booked a rental for a long weekend fall break. Then, I set our plans to focus on the state parks . Our family, including a teen and tween, was ready to head north.

About Door County

For those not familiar with the upper Midwest, you may be surprised to discover Door County is much larger than you think.

Spread over 2,000 square miles with nearly 20 separate communities, you will not be able to fit in a visit to the whole region in one weekend.

Where is Door County? Find it on Wisconsin’s left thumb. Yes, hold out your left-hand palm facing away from you. The thumb part —that is Door County. It is a peninsula surrounded by water . Green Bay is to the west, and Lake Michigan is to the north and east.

This unique geography means pretty much that anywhere you go in Door County, you will be within a short drive of the water.

This unique geography means pretty much that anywhere you go in Door County, you will be within a short drive of the water . If not directly on the coastline. Door County, at its widest, is 18 miles across.

Go to Door County if you love charming lakeside small towns, water views, and outdoor activities.

The peninsula has five impressive state parks with extensive hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and camping options. And also a wealth of county parks . Nineteen of them. Some are so good they demand a spot on your itinerary too.

Although I happened to be underwhelmed by the food choices, I did have some favorites. And I share them in this article.

Our Itinerary: A 3-Day Weekend

Here is an at-a-glance overview of what we did and a map showing where we went.

  • Day 1: Late arrival and dinner at Coyote Roadhouse
  • Day 2: Sunrise and hiking and biking at Peninsula Sate Park
  • Day 3: Apples, brunch, and hiking at Newport State Park
  • Day 4: Check out and Cave Point County Park

How to use this map:  In the map header, click the square tab to the left of my logo or click the enlarge frame to the right to view detail. You can save the map to “Your Places” on Google Maps by clicking the star next to the map name. Or you can share it by clicking the share icon.

Day 1: Late Arrival & Coyote Roadhouse

We began our Door County trip on Friday afternoon.

With one brief stop to stretch our legs and fill the tank, the drive north from Chicago took us just under five hours .

As soon as we arrived, we dumped our bags at our Kangaroo Lake Airbnb  near Bailey’s Harbor.

Then we jumped back in the car to drive two minutes down the road to grab a brew, some cheese curds, and the Friday fish-fry at nearby Coyote Roadhouse .

This meal was the perfect way to start a weekend in Wisconsin. After dinner, we crashed.

Day 2: Sunrise & Peninsula State Park

Rarely have I been to a place like Door County where the short distance between the east and west coasts made it so easy view the sunrise and the sunset on the same day.

It was one of the things I was looking forward to most about visiting the area.

However, the weather the weekend we chose to visit, did not cooperate.

On our first morning, we rose early, grabbed coffees, and headed east toward Anclam Park in Bailey’s Harbor—one of the best places on the peninsula to catch the rising sun.

As we drove, we hoped the overcast skies would be clearer on the coast.

Sadly, they were not. Instead of the sun, all we could see through the drizzle was a solid wall of fog .

However, all was not lost. We were treated with a different and entertaining sight .

A small group still partying and dancing from an all-nighter bachelor party right at our sunrise spot.

Although it felt too early for party beats from a Spotify playlist, we were amused . So were the handful of others who happened to be at the park that morning too.

Even though I cannot necessarily promise a dawn dance party, I can guarantee with good weather—you will have a much better chance of seeing a spectacular sunrise than we did.

Since the day was still early, we let the kids sleep. Instead, we took our time to enjoy the morning and our Kangaroo Lake view .

Breakfast At Heirloom Cafe & Provisions

Eventually, the kids stirred and got dressed, and we all headed out.

Our first stop? Nearby Heirloom Cafe & Provisions for a delicious mid-morning meal. While ordering breakfast, we planned for lunch by buying some pre-packaged wraps, noodles, and cookies for a picnic, also available at the cafe.

Sadly, Heirloom Cafe & Provisions permanently closed since I wrote this article. Sway Brewing & Blending moved into the same space and offers highly-rated breakfast baked goods and coffees.

Satisfied and fueled, we moved on to the day’s main event—visiting Peninsula State Park .

Thinking about visiting Peninsula State Park ? View more detailed information about the park in my article, “ You Will Love Door County State Parks: An Overview ,”  including quick facts to help you plan your visit.

Peninsula State Park: Biking The Sunset Trail

Our plan—bike the popular 9.6-mile Sunset Trail loop. After a 15-minute drive to Edge of the Park bike rental, we parked and confirmed bikes were available . Edge of the Park does not take reservations. It rents bikes on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Luckily, there were plenty of bikes ready to ride, even on such a busy fall weekend. We parked in their lot and quickly got helmeted, on bikes, and were soon happily pedaling away.

The Sunset Trail is easy to follow and a pleasure to ride . We enjoyed stops at the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse to walk around. And at the Nicolet Bay Boat Launch to skip rocks and check out the view. Altogether, with breaks, riding the loop took us roughly two and a half hours .

Hybrid bikes work well on the Sunset Trail , which is unpaved, though well-graded. I was even surprised to find Edge of Park rented the same hybrid I have at home.

See scenes from our ride in the YouTube video below.

Next up— hiking ! After our ride, we bought souvenirs at the bike rental and headed back to our car and into the park.

Peninsula State Park: Hiking The Eagle Trail

Our destination was the highly-rated Eagle Trail . We planned to picnic near the start of the trail and then hike the 2.0-mile loop. In hindsight, we should have viewed the park map more carefully .

There are no picnic facilities at the trailhead. Instead, it would have been better to stop along the way at one of the lovely bayside or forested picnic sites.

Sign up for my monthly Discovery Newsletter & get a free Trip Budget Calculator !

However, we were hungry and did not want to give up our parking space at the crowded trailhead. So, we sat down on a small strip of grass near the Eagle Panorama viewpoint and chowed down. Our Heirloom Cafe wrap sandwiches and snacks were picnic-perfect .

With our bellies full, we were ready to move. We opted to hike the flat section of the trail first, looping away from the water. It was a terrific hike . And our favorite part—the 150-foot+ bluffs adjacent to the shore. Seeing them blew us away.

After completing the trail, we headed back to Kangaroo Lake to rest and enjoy an afternoon glass of wine. Then, west again to dinner at the bayside town of Ephraim to try to catch the sunset.

Day 3: Apples, Brunch & Newport State Park

Day two of our trip started with more light rain and overcast skies. So, we opted to skip the sunrise and take it easy.

Knowing the weather was expected to clear later in the morning, we let the kids sleep. Then, we started our day by heading west to the charming bayside town of Fish Creek for a late brunch .

Apple Picking At Lautenbach Orchard

In Fish Creek, we dropped by the highly-rated White Gull Inn to put our name in for a table. Since the wait was over an hour, we knew we had time for an activity.

Luckily, a Door County favorite, Lautenbach Orchard , is a short five-minute drive away and made for an ideal while-we-wait visit. Once there, we bought snacks and cider for the kids, coffee for ourselves, and picked apples.

Brunch At White Gull Inn

Two big bags of apples later, we headed back to Fish Creek and to the inn. To round out our wait, we grabbed more coffees at White Gull’s outdoor stand and walked down the block to check out bayside Sunset Beach Park to enjoy the views.

After breakfast, we drove north to cruise Door County’s famed curvy highway . I had heard about the road, saw impressive photos, and was curious to check it out.

Driving Door County's Curvy Highway

This unusual stretch of road was built to be the “ideal highway and always keep nature in view,” according to this DoorCounty.com article . Unsurprisingly, this snaky road is no secret . And especially in fall, driving and taking photos of the road is extraordinarily popular.

With kids in the car and a hike planned, my family sadly did not have the patience for me to join the ranks of my fellow amateurs and get the perfect curvy highway photo. Though, we did catch some video, which you can see below.

After our scenic drive, we headed back south on backroads nearly as pretty as the curvy highway to visit our second state park— Newport State Park.

Newport State Park: Hiking

Designated a “ Wilderness Park ,” and “ Dark Sky Preserve ,” Newport is far less crowded than Peninsula State Park and stunning in its own right. We hiked the 2.5-mi Lynd Trail Point Loop * , thoroughly enjoying its forested paths, beaches, and Lake Michigan views.

*Note : The Lynd Trail Point Loop length is 2.5-miles , not 3.5 as stated by AllTrails. View more detailed information about the Newport State Park in my article, “ You Will Love Door County State Parks: An Overview ,”  including quick facts to help you plan your visit.

After the hike, we stopped to shop, see the sunset, and grab dinner in Sister Bay .

Day 4: Cave Point County Park & Home

On our final day, we caught the gorgeous early morning light  on the north end of Kangaroo Lake, immediately across the quiet causeway from our rental.

After enjoying the last morning of our stay, we packed up and headed into Bailey’s Harbor for breakfast. We stopped for coffee and everything bagel egg sandwiches at Bearded Heart Coffee . Then we drove south to squeeze in one more park visit.

Stopping at Cave Point County Park on our way out was a recommendation by my friend, Elizabeth , who lives locally. And I am thrilled I listened to her advice.

Not only was the drive into the park through the wooded county roads lovely, but the half-mile hike along the park’s rugged coastline was spectacular. It is a must-do for any visit to Door County.

If you are planning a visit to Cave Point County Park, be sure to check out this great article from the Door County Mom website to help you plan your visit.

Where To Stay: Overview

The short answer on where to stay when you visit Door County is wherever you can book a room or a rental. The area is popular and has a loyal visitor base that returns year after year.

However, if you are planning a trip with the benefit of time on your side, staying in Sturgeon Bay or further north is ideal. Although the peninsula may be larger than you expect, it is easy to navigate and a joy to drive around . So, do not worry too much about finding the perfect location.

For our visit, we stayed in an Airbnb on Kangaroo Lake, a few minutes outside Bailey’s Harbor. This location is on the eastern side of the peninsula and is considered the “quieter” side . We loved it. And thoroughly enjoyed our water view, which helped make us feel as if our short getaway was a true vacation .

Additionally, we found some of the best food in the area to be on the east side. Another bonus, you can snooze in a bit if you want to catch the sunrise as you are already much closer to the sunrise viewing areas.

During our stay, we headed west for dinner each evening in hopes of catching the sunset. We never found the 15-minute drive from our rental to be an issue.

Where To Stay: Resources

We prefer to rent when we travel as this tends to give us more space. However, you may want to find alternative accommodation—such as staying at one of the peninsula’s several historic inns or pretty wooded campsites.

Search for lodging on Booking.com . Or  check out this resource list on the Destination Door County website.

And for those who also opt for rentals, the best places to search beyond Booking.com , are Airbnb and VRBO . Additionally, our very responsive rental owner, Martina, owns several properties on the peninsula and will book directly through her website, Door County Stay .

Does finding the right lodging matter to you ? Then check out my guide “ How To Find Just-Right Accommodation In Five Steps ,” for tips and tricks for your next trip.

A Door County Weekend Road Trip

  • Post last modified: February 27, 2021
  • Post category: Itineraries / North America / Overnighters / Wisconsin

Door County is a great Wisconsin getaway for a short weekend road trip. A weekend in Door County is filled with unique experiences, delicious food and quiet living. We’ve created our perfect two day itinerary for you to follow in order to get the most out of your trip to Door County.

Door County is surrounded on all sides by the majestic Lake Michigan. These 300 miles of shorelines make for some amazing views and charming lakeside towns. Therefore, we recommend visiting Door County in the summer for the pleasant weather and the fall for the fall colors (end of June through early October).

Where to Stay?

We love camping in Door County as the county is home to several State and County parks. There are also several private campgrounds to choose from as well. We love camping in Peninsula State Park . If you’re looking to stay in less rustic accommodations, Door County is filled with many adorable Bed and Breakfasts, resorts and AirBnBs . Additionally, you can always stay in a hotel as well but we’d recommend the charm of more local accommodations.

Friday Night

Make your way to Door County on Friday night. Eat dinner in Sturgeon Bay and make sure to stop for drinks at Starboard Brewing Company .

Day 1 – North Island

During your Door County weekend, you can explore the entire island by following the Door County Costal Byway in a circle around the island.  We like staying in Peninsula State Park, so we start our weekend with the North side of the County. Depending on where you’re staying the night, you can adjust what you do each day to do eliminate extra driving time.  On your first day, complete the top part of the loop.

For your first stop, explore Peninsula State Park. Take in the beautiful views of lake Michigan. We love taking a walk on some of the hiking trails or going for a bike ride through the park. Whatever you decide to do, it’s definitely worth a stop.

Peninsula State Park

Next, stop in Sister Bay for brunch at Al Johnson’s . The Swedish pancakes there are delicious. However, the real treat is stopping to see the goats on the roof. The goats walk and graze on the grass rooftop of the restaurant.

Al Johnson's Swedish Pancakes - Door County

Check out Grand View Park before heading into Ellison Bay. On your way out of Ellison Bay, check out the wilderness of Newport State Park .

Your next stop will be Gills Rock. Continue on to Northport. On your way there, make sure to slow down and snap a picture of the windiest road on the island. This is the famous road that you see in most pictures of Door County and is worth the wait for the perfect picture as you’re heading north. Hop out of the car at Northport and take in the views of Washington Island.

Day 2 – south island.

Make your first stop Fish Creek. Hop out here and take a walk through the cute shops and parks in town.

Sunset Park - Fish Creek

Next, Head south to Egg Harbor. On your way there, stop for a sampling of local treats at Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery & Market . In Egg Harbor, stretch your legs in the local shops and find something truly Wisconsin.

Explore more of the Door County Wine Trail! Check out our full post on all the wineries here.

Vineyard - Door County

Continue your loop around the island and head to Jacksonport following the Door County Costal Byway. Detour off the Byway to visit Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park for some more views of Lake Michigan coastline.

Cave Point County Park

On your way back to your accommodations, check out Cana Island lighthouse.   Additionally, i f you’re looking for a sweet treat for dinner, check out Wilson’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim.

Want to Adjust the Itinerary?

Door County is one of those charming places where time slows down. You could easily spend an entire week in Door County relaxing. If that appeals to you, do it! However, we’d recommend just adding more time to your visit and filling your extra days with whatever you feel like doing and enjoying the slow pace of island life. If you have less time, you could easily spend just one day in Door County. However, we’d recommend just choosing one or two things to do as you won’t be able to drive the complete loop and make all the stops. Instead focus your one day in the specific area you want to spend your time.

If you want to add your meal stops to your itinerary, our list of amazing things to eat in Door County will help you plan your weekend.

We’re confident that you won’t regret making this pristine section of Lake Michigan your next kayaking destination.

If you have any questions or want to shout out your own recommendations for kayaking in Door County, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’ve got lots of tips for the best food in Door County , Wisconsin road trips and more, so are always happy to share a little extra!

Best Kayaking Spots in Door County

The peninsula of Door County, dividing the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay, has recently adopted a reputation amongst paddlers as one of the most peaceful kayaking destinations around. The region hosts many interesting and exciting features that paddlers can spend days exploring. With caves, shipwrecks, cliffs, wetlands, and hidden swimming holes, Door County is quickly becoming a kayaking hotspot.

Cave Point for Intermediate Kayaking

After conquering the open waters of Lake Michigan, Cave Point rewards paddlers with a unique opportunity to explore some stunning sea caves. You’ll quickly understand why the geographical features at Cave Point have attracted so many kayakers. For paddlers with little open water experience, we recommend that you join one of the many Cave Point tours offered at the park in order to safely navigate the crossing.

The reason this is considered an intermediate kayaking spot is because of the nature of open water kayaking on Lake Michigan. The winds and currents can be surprising, including the waves that are often created. Summertime storms can also present a challenge.

Launch Site:

  • Cave Point County Park

Bailey’s Harbor for Shipwrecks

For kayakers looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Bailey’s Harbor is a mandatory stop in Door County. While paddling throughout the waters of the harbor, kayakers can witness some of the 250 shipwrecks littered throughout the bay. Numerous outfitters offer clear-bottom kayaks for rent as well as guided tours to point out some of the best wrecks.

  • Baileys Harbor Town Marina or Baileys Harbor Ridges Park

Kangaroo Lake for Fall Colors

Nearby Bailey’s Harbor, paddlers can find the beautiful inland Kangaroo lake. For a quiet paddling experience, we recommend exploring the north end of the lake as it is a designated “no motor zone”. The calm waters provide the perfect conditions for exploring the lake and its wildlife.

*SUP Friendly Paddling

  • Kangaroo Lake Public Boat Launch

Gills Rock (Difficulty: Novice)

If you only have time to visit one spot in Door County, we recommend the historic area of Gills Rock. This spot has everything. Starting from an old fishing village, kayakers have the opportunity to see jaw-dropping bluffs, forgotten shipwrecks, incredible caves, and historic pictographs believed to be over 350 years old!

This is a bucket list kayaking spot for the State of Wisconsin, and is best in early summer before summer storms really start up and before Door County tourism is at its annual peak.

  • Weborg Dock and Boat Ramp

Moonlight Bay to Rieboldt Creek

Perfect for beginners, this area between Lake Michigan and Mud Lake is the ideal spot for wilderness exploration. The waters contain an assorted collection of wildlife and waterfowl that can be seen while paddling throughout the passage’s calm, tranquil waters.

There’s also the Cana Island Lighthouse just to the east, so paddling around the small peninsula will not just show off the beautiful shoreline and wildlife, but adds a historic stone lighthouse.

  • Bues Point Boat Ramp

Best Kayaking Spots in Green Bay

One of the best spots to start exploring the western arm of Lake Michigan is the city of Green Bay itself. Many of the rivers branching off of Lake Michigan offer calm waters and rich scenery while paddling throughout the city’s downtown area. In addition to the urban landscape, every river features a magnificent collection of remote wilderness to be discovered. And, after exploring the calm creeks and rivers, paddlers can either venture into the open waters of the Bay or challenge themselves with some exciting nearby whitewater runs.

Kayaking on the Calm Fox River

Located in the heart of downtown Green Bay, Fox River is an urban paddler’s dream come true. Since Fox River extends all the way from Lake Winnebago up to Green Bay, kayakers are in for a combined urban and rural paddling treat. In some areas, you’ll be surrounded by dense woodlands while other parts of the river will drop you right in the heart of the historic city. This is great, SUP friendly water to paddle on in Green Bay.

  • Kayakers Point, east side of river

Green Bay’s East River Kayaking

Often overlooked, even by local paddlers, the East River offers another fantastic opportunity to combine urban and rural kayaking.  With so many launch sites, paddlers can pick the exact type of adventure they want. Launching in the city of Green Bay will feature many of the same urban sights as the Fox while putting-in further South in Allouez allows for complete immersion in Green Bay’s wilderness. Some of the many species of birds known to live in the area include blue jays, cardinals, and kingfishers.

  • Green Isle Park or Riverview Park

Easy Paddling at Deerfield Docks Park

For a great all-around family day-trip, Deerfield Docks Park is one of the best spots for kayaking in the Green Bay area. This 3-acre park features a boardwalk trail, picnic area, and offshore fishing. Also, from the boat launch, kayakers can access both the marshy Duck Creek and the gorgeous Peats Lake. Countless smaller passages and ponds make this kayaking launch a great place to explore.

*SUP Friendly Paddling BUT this area has a lot of lake weeds so your fin may drag a bit from time to time.

  • Deerfield Docks Park

Peshtigo River (Difficulty: Experienced)

For paddlers looking for the best whitewater run in all of Wisconsin, that’s gonna be the Peshtigo River. This exciting 5-mile run features continuous rapids ranging from Class II to Class IV with lots of fun waves, chutes, holes and eddies. During the calm parts of the run keep an eye out for beavers, otters, and white-tailed deer that live in the area. This is NOT for novice paddlers and it’s HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you plan to go with a guide or another experienced kayaker.

  • Farmdam Lane Loop

Pick-up Site:

  • Boat Landing 12 or Boat Landing 11 Loop

Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve (Difficulty: Novice)

One of the coolest spots for kayaking near Green Bay and Door County is Dead Horse Bay. Here you can launch and paddle south to Long Tail Point Beach and then continue by checking out the Long Tail Point Lighthouse . Built in 1847 and since abandoned and all but destroyed, the lighthouse ruins stand on the sandbar in the lake, perfect to see from a kayak. It’s pretty cool

After kayaking visit the 920-acre Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve which is located on the western shore of Green Bay and has some of the best wildlife viewing in the area. The Park features over nine miles of hiking trails throughout wetlands, forests, and meadows creating an unparalleled wildlife viewing experience. You can’t kayak within the preserve, but you can go birdwatching from the platforms, which is just a different sort of enjoyment.

  • West Shores Boat Launch

Wisconsin State Park Paddling

Wisconsin State Parks are beautiful, and you’ll find such different sights than other state parks in places like Florida parks or in Washington State . Here, you’ll find cliffs and freshwater bays, with wetlands, historic structures and so much more.

Peninsula State Park

In the heart of Door County, Peninsula State Park is not only beautiful but also easily accessible. During a trip to Peninsula, paddlers can make day trips to a number of popular spots including Chambers Island, Horseshoe Island, Eagles Cave, and the Eagle Bluff lighthouse. Kayakers should also be on the lookout for bald eagles as there are many nests throughout the park.

My favorite thing to do at Peninsula State Park isn’t actually kayaking, but it’s going up on the skywalk. This incredible boardwalk leads to the treetops and brings you to an awesome view of Lake Michigan / Green Bay. There’s a ton to do at Peninsula State Park, so after kayaking explore more!

  • Nicolet Bay Boat Launch

Newport State Park

Also in Door County, Newport is another park that can keep paddlers busy for days. The park is located on the border of the Mink River Estuary, Lake Michigan, and Europe Lake offering countless spots to explore. Many of these spots can be easily tackled in a day-trip but for the more adventurous kayakers, the availability of campsites and world-renowned stargazing at Newport makes the recipe for an incredible multi-day adventure.

  • Newport State Park Beach or Liberty Grove Park

Peshtigo Harbor State Wildlife Area

Found on the western side of Green Bay, Peshtigo Harbor State Wildlife was established in order to, “enhance wildlife habitat, protect natural communities, and provide nature-based recreation”. Kayakers can explore this rich wildlife area on their own or choose to follow one of the many established self-guided water trails.

Following established paddling trails is a very good way to ensure that you’re having a minimal impact on the wildlife and environment when paddling. Also, if you’re new to kayaking in an area, following the set kayaking routes ensures you have a more safe experience.

  • Peshtigo River Ramp

High Cliff State Park

For paddlers searching for a calm day of kayaking away from the waters of Lake Michigan, High Cliff State Park is a must-visit. On the calm waters of Lake Winnebago, kayakers can spend a few hours leisurely exploring the lake at their own pace. Features of High Cliff include a 40-foot lookout tower, 200-foot bluffs, and incredible cliff ledges.

  • Beach at High Cliff State Park or High Cliff State Park Marina

Potawatomi State Park

One of the larger state parks with a staggering area of 1200 acres, Door County’s Ponawatomi State Park is an optimal spot for wilderness lovers. The park is known for its mighty limestone cliffs, rolling hills, and diverse collection of wildlife. While on the water, kayakers could spot herons, bald eagles, deer, raccoons, and much more.

  • Shoreline Boat Launch

Tours for Kayaking in Door County and Green Bay

Even though many of the best places to kayaking Door County and Green Bay are pretty mellow, there are some more technical paddles, and also routes that can confuse unfamiliar visitors, especially in wetland areas. Booking a kayaking tour is a great idea if you’re not well versed in a region, even if the difficulty level is appropriate for beginners.

Cave Point Kayak Tour

This tour is only bookable when the season starts: Door County Wetlands Kayaking Tour

Weather and When to Visit Door County / Green Bay

Like most of the paddling spots in the Great Lakes, the best time of the year to plan your kayaking trip is in the warmer summer months. However, the waters take a while to warm up with temperatures still ranging between 40-50º F in June. That means hypothermia can still represent a serious risk if submerged for extended periods of time. On the other hand, July and August are the warmest months of the year with water temperatures in the 60s.

While planning paddling trips in the area, it is always important to check wind speed and direction before every launch. Offshore winds can make it difficult to paddle back and high speeds can whip up potentially hazardous waves. Kayakers should always wear their PFD in case of changing weather conditions. 11

Annual Door County Sea Kayak Symposium

To join one of the most inclusive kayaking communities in Wisconsin, don’t miss the Sea Kayak Symposium in Door County. This year marks the 19th annual Symposium and on the weekend of July 8th, paddlers from all over convene to experience these majestic waters as a family. With tours, classes, group seminars, and evening bonfires, the weekend’s events have been designed to provide an unforgettable paddling experience for kayakers of any experience level. Click the link below to learn more about joining a kayaking community like no other.

  • Website: https://www.rutabaga.com/dcskspage

With Green Bay and Door County quickly gaining popularity through word of mouth in kayaking circles, it’s only a matter of time before the waters are filled with paddlers from all over North America. Don’t wait for another season to take advantage of these extraordinary paddling opportunities. There are few places in the world where you can find shipwrecks, pictographs, urban river paddling, and whitewater runs all in the same place. We can’t wait to be back out on the water and we hope to see you there!

The best places for kayaking in Door County and Green Bay range from state parks to wetlands on the shores of Lake Michigan. Top spots for kayaking with wildlife, seeing lighthouses and beautiful fall colors in Northeast Wisconsin.

A Stony Brook Children’s Hospital pediatrician died Saturday after she fell out of a moving travel trailer, while on a trip with her family, according to state police and a spokeswoman for Stony Brook Medicine.

Dr. Monika I. Woroniecka, 58, and other family members were riding in a 2024 Airstream trailer during the last minutes of their trip from Stony Brook around 3 p.m. The family was traveling upstate to view Monday’s solar eclipse, the family told police.

Authorities said the woman’s husband, Robert P. Woroniecki, 59, was driving a 2019 Ram pickup that was hauling the trailer heading west on Route 12E in Brownsville, Jefferson County, near upstate Watertown.

Witnesses said they saw the passenger door of the trailer swing open, helped by the wind, and watched as Monika Woroniecka hung on to the door before falling off the Airstream, according to police. She struck her head on the shoulder of the roadway.

She was transported to the emergency room at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, where she was pronounced dead.

Woroniecka’s daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend were traveling with them, police said.

Police were investigating the incident and no further details were released.

Woroniecka subspecialized in allergy-immunology since the early 2000s, and completed a pediatrics-allergy/immunology fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital in 1996, according to her professional profile.

Stony Brook Medicine officials confirmed her death in a statement Monday, and in a statement emailed by a university representative, Dr. Susan Schuval, chief of the Division of Pediatric Allergy/Immunology at Stony Brook Children's Hospital, said Woroniecka had taught “countless” medical students and residents.

“She was known for her calm demeanor, kindness, and dedication to her patients,” Schuval wrote. “She will be missed by all.”

Schuval said Woroniecka had taught at Stony Brook since 2016. She was a graduate of Medical University of Warsaw, Poland, and completed her pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.

The Full-County Driving Tour: How to Visit the Entire Peninsula & Its Islands

Published January 31, 2021

If the doldrums of winter have you dreaming of packing a bag, hitting the open road, and chasing big-time adventure, Door County should be on your road-trip bucket list.

The Door Peninsula has 19 established communities as well as other small villages, unincorporated towns, and even a few small but visitable islands, all interconnected by the simple (and scenic) Door County Coastal Byway system. Each destination has its own distinct community, culture, and style with its own charms and natural and scenic offerings, but each one is all-but-guaranteed to stoke your interest and inspire your wanderlust.

While Door County’s relative remoteness and scenic wonder are some of its biggest draws, they also mean you’ll need a car, motorcycle, RV, or similar vehicle while you’re up here. Many towns and destinations can be explored by bike, foot, or kayak and others, like the island communities, will require bringing, renting, or chartering a boat.

You’re encouraged to choose your own adventure and explore the county any way that works for your travel style, interests, and timetable. A full-county tour could take you a long weekend or an entire summer—it’s all up to you, and we like to think this ability to mix-and-match-and-remix your trip as you go is a major part of the fun and mystique of Door County.

Interactive Map

Use the interactive map below and the driving resources at the end of this guide to begin dreaming up your road-trip getaway. If the map is too zoomed out, try refreshing your browser window or using the +/- tool in the bottom-left corner of the map.

Door County Destinations

Southern Door As the only land-based entryway into the county, Southern Door and its seven towns serve as the welcome wagon for just about every and any visitor who comes up here. Depending on where you’re coming from, you’ll find yourself heading up the peninsula on either Highway 42 (runs through Forestville on the east side) or Highway 57 (runs through Brussels on the west side).

  • Brussels: The largest Belgian settlement in the entire country with country roads and farmhouses for scenic drives,  Belgian chapels, a Belgian heritage center, traditional food, parks, snowmobiling and ATVing, and plenty of pastoral charm.
  • Forestville : Run, hike, or bike the Ahnapee State Trail, enjoy open roads and farm-lined highways, golfing, and tons of shoreline for photo ops.

Mid-Peninsula Sturgeon Bay is the next major stop on your list; it’s the largest city on the peninsula and where you’ll find the visitor center, a rich maritime culture, theatre and nightlife, and major stores and services. The area around Sturgeon Bay, including Carlsville, has no shortage of things to do and see and is the physical, cultural, and spiritual gateway to the rest of Door County.

  • Carlsville: Tiny community that has an outsized number of locally made artisan goods such as coffee, candles, wine, and spirits for sale in its shops, plus plenty of outdoor space for biking, hiking, and scenic drives.
  • Sturgeon Bay: Small city on a canal with a maritime history and strong shipbuilding culture boasting two state parks (Potawatomi & Whitefish Dunes), lighthouses, a famous steel bridge, a bright red lighthouse, diverse dining options, and three separate shopping districts.

The Lake Side (East/Lake Michigan) If you take highway 57 out of Sturgeon Bay, stops might include small beach communities, an iconic county park, a quiet and lesser-known state park, two even lesser-known inland lakes, and a trip on Lake Michigan via a boat rental or guided paddling experience. The quieter side of Door County gives you all the water views and the outdoor activities you can handle, minus the bay side’s crowds.

  • Jacksonport: Uncrowded white-sand beaches, small shops and restaurants, jagged limestone cliffs and shoreline, Cave Point County Park, paddling options, a springtime festival, and a traditional New Year’s Day swim in Lake Michigan.
  • Cana Island: An island semi-connected to the land via a sandy causeway accessed by foot or hayride. Find a scenic lighthouse, hiking trail, lake and shoreline views, and a serene setting. Bring water shoes if you plan to walk in.
  • Baileys Harbor: A sanctuary for beer and food lovers as well as nature enthusiasts, kayakers, hikers, birders, anglers, and boaters. Find The Ridges Sanctuary, Moonlight Bay Bedrock Beach, Toft Point, Mud Lake State Wildlife Area, Kangaroo Lake Preserve, and more.

Northern Door Northern Door is in many ways where Door County’s real wilderness and outdoor adventure begin. In addition to secluded lakeside communities to explore, here’s where travelers can find multiple islands accessible only by boat or ferry, shoreline-hugging hiking trails, coves and bluffs and rocky outcroppings to explore, snorkeling and shipwreck-diving opportunities, and two of Wisconsin’s most remote and physically stunning state parks.

  • Rowleys Bay: Unspoiled natural beauty and wilderness adventure at the Mink River Estuary and the southern shores of Newport State Park. Birding and wildlife viewing, paddling, fishing, and zip lining as well as traditional  fish boils at the resort.
  • Plum Island: Charter a boat or take your own to this publicly accessible island just north of the peninsula’s tip. Bring diving gear or a kayak to view historic shipwrecks through crystal-clear water, hike miles of unbelievably beautiful shoreline, enjoy a secluded picnic, search for birds in the wildlife refuge, and relax in the island vibes of this hidden-away paradise.

  • Washington Island: Take a  ferry from the mainland to this 100-square mile island—cars, bikes, and kayaks are all welcome aboard. Once there, drive or bike to an extremely rare stone beach, lavender farms, casual island dining, a bitters bar, a magical replica Norwegian stave church in the forest, tree-lined backroads, and wide-open highways.
  • Rock Island: A taste of the island life, an awe-inspiring Icelandic-style boathouse, primitive camping, hiking trails, secluded beaches, historic buildings, and Wisconsin’s oldest lighthouse.
  • Ellison Bay: The Clearing Folk School, towering limestone bluffs along the shoreline, the overlook at Ellison Bluff County Park, Newport State Park, and an old-fashioned candy store.

A vista of Lake Michigan

  • Gills Rock: A quaint and quirky lakeside fishing village serving as a jumping-off point for island adventures. Featuring Jens Jensen’s famously windy road, a maritime museum, views of bluffs and jagged shoreline, sunsets, shipwreck diving, lake-inspired food, and views of Death’s Door.

The Bay Side (West/Green Bay) The west side of the peninsula is considered the livelier, more social side of Door County. Here’s where you’ll find vibrant food and drink scenes, larger downtown areas, live music and performing arts, vacation resorts and communities, ample parks and greenspaces, and plenty of family-friendly attractions. Most of these towns are highly walkable and offer a quintessential Door County experience.

  • Egg Harbor: A favorite town on the peninsula for dining, drinking, nightlight, and culture of all sorts, a beautiful new public marina and beach, a trendy and ever-evolving downtown, local artisan goods,  clothing and gear shops, craft beer, golfing, and beloved festivals.
  • Juddville: A charming, tiny town near it all. Stop here for farm markets and farm stands, an art gallery, peace and quiet for relaxation and recharging, art opportunities, and gorgeous countryside for biking or driving through.
  • Ephraim: Historic charm and a quiet respite from the social hubs surrounding it. Come here for motorcycling and biking, fine arts, the very photogenic Hardy Gallery, fish boils, and historical sites.

Fall-time view of the quaint Ephraim shoreline

  • Fish Creek: Many people consider Fish Creek to be the hub of social life in the county. Find Peninsula State Park,  outdoor theater, performing arts, silent sports, music and nightlife, one-of-a-kind shopping, hiking and biking, loads of art galleries, restaurants, bars and cafes, and even more.
  • Sister Bay: A foodie must-stop. A huge array of cuisines, styles, and price points are available, and al fresco dining is the rule, not the exception, in summer and late fall. The downtown area offers dozens of local shops, food and coffee stops, and a public waterfront with a marina, beach, and plenty of sunset-watching spots.
  • Chambers Island: Getting to this island seven miles offshore will require some advanced research and planning and a zest for adventure. Visit a historic lighthouse, hike or bike one of several trails, relax on the beach with rare views of the mainland, and kayak-accessible inland lake with two of its own islands.
  • Horseshoe Island: This tiny island situated a mile offshore of Peninsula State Park offers a serene and unique setting. Ambitious visitors will find the 1-mile Engelmar Trail that circles the island, ruins of 19th century houses, birding and wildlife-viewing opportunities, a public boat dock, and top-notch trout fishing. Some highly experienced kayakers will reach the island by paddling from the mainland, but most people rent or charter a motor boat.

door county one day trip

I'll be passing through on my way south, midweek this June, after spending the day hiking around Plitvice.

I'll be arriving late afternoon-early evening and will have that night and the next morning.

I know this is not even close to enough time to see much of Zadar but it's better than nothing.

' class=

This is what I posted on one thread just yesterday.

You might not have time for everything though, such as green markets, which should be done in the morning.

Must for me in Zadar itself, take your time strolling through the old town. If you have time, walk along the waterfront from the Sea Organ eastward. That will get you to one of the eastern gates near 5 Bunara (wells) and back into the old town through that gate.

An absolute must is watching sunset while you are listening to the Sea Organ. Stay a bit longer to see Sun Solutation. Sun Solutation is right there next to the Sea Organ.

Visit St Anastasia Cathedral. Beautiful Cathedral. You will be walking right past it anyway. St Donat too.

Have a coffee in the main square and observe. Visit green market and fish market. They are both very close to the main square.

For accommodation use booking.com. They have excellent map and also use their other filters to find something suitable.

Anywhere near the old town would be fine. I doubt that any accommodation provider in the old town provides parking. Be careful though. They can be tricky with wording about parking. Make sure it is onsite. Some hotels charge for parking. Private apartments don't. Apartments are better value than hotels anyway.
