The 10 Best Train Trips From New York City

Getting there is half the fun on these rail journeys from the Big Apple.

Train travel in the U.S. isn’t exactly as easy as in, say, Europe or Japan, but luckily for New York City residents and visitors, the Big Apple is one of the country's major rail hubs. It’s a snap to get to and from destinations near and far on Amtrak, which offers over a dozen train routes from the city, spanning north to Montreal and south to Miami. Meanwhile, regional services like the Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road run to places closer to NYC like Connecticut, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island.

If you need a little inspiration on where you should go, here are some of the best train trips from NYC that are worthy of taking the scenic route.

NYC to Chicago

Train route: Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited Duration: 19 hours

Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited offers daily departures to whisk New Yorkers away to the Windy City. The route takes passengers through some gorgeous upstate New York areas, such as the Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes region, then hugs the shore of Lake Michigan before entering Chicago. According to Amtrak, the best seats in the house are the Viewliner accommodations, including the Viewliner Bedroom Suite , which comes with a foldout bed, ideal for the overnight journey. Once in your destination, set out on an architectural walking tour, explore the best attractions in Chicago like the Art Institute of Chicago and "The Bean" in Millennium Park, and stay at the luxe Pendry Chicago .

NYC to Westerly, Rhode Island

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional Duration: 3 hours

For a quicker getaway, board Amtrak’s Northeast Regional to Westerly, Rhode Island, a quiet little beach town ideal for a refreshing weekend. Though short, the train ride takes you past some idyllic landscapes in Connecticut, over bridges, and past glittering water views and pastoral fields. Once in Westerly, disembark the train and make your way to Ocean House , one of the country's best beach resorts . If you can tear yourself away from the on-site spa and ocean-view saltwater pool, make your way to the charming downtown. Shop for chocolate truffles at Hauser Chocolatier , dine on local bites at The Cooked Goose , or just tuck your toes into the sand for a day at Misquamicut State Beach .

NYC to Boston

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional or Acela Duration: 5 hours on Regional or 3 hours, 43 minutes on Acela

Keep going north on the Northeast Regional for a few more stops, and you’ll hit Boston. This train trip from NYC takes you through more bucolic landscapes and a sprinkling of city vistas as you pass through Providence. If you want to arrive at your destination sooner, opt for Acela, though you might miss some of the scenery as the train whizzes by at higher speeds with fewer stops. Once in Beantown, fill your itinerary with some of Boston's must-do activities , including walking The Freedom Trail, visiting the Paul Revere House , and enjoying a bit of culture at the Institute of Contemporary Art  and Museum of Fine Arts . And if you happen to be there during baseball season, don't miss a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Stay at The Langham, Boston , a centrally located hotel built inside the old Federal Reserve Bank.

NYC to Philadelphia

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional Duration: 1 hour, 20 minutes

If the allure of an ooey, gooey, downright delicious cheesesteak is calling your name, then it's time to take the train south to Philadelphia. Though the views during this short ride won't be the best, it's worth it for where the train stops: William H. Gray III 30th Street Station . First opened in 1933, the station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Original features include 95-foot ceilings and art deco touches. The station is also home to The Porch , an outdoor area connecting the station to Market Street, and a stone's throw from major attractions like The Academy of Natural Sciences and Independence Hall . As for that cheesesteak, it's up for debate on who serves the best, but Dalessandro's , Angelo's Pizzeria , and Jim's South St. are a few local favorites. After you dine, retire to Wm. Mulherin's Sons Hotel , a chic and centrally located boutique property with a timeless design, including exposed brick and beams.

NYC to Wilmington, Delaware

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional Duration: 2 hours

Travel just a smidge past Philadelphia, and you’ll hit Wilmington, a history buff’s dream. The journey will take you past verdant landscapes before entering this city of around 72,000 people. Disembark at Joseph R. Biden Jr. Railroad Station, named after the president thanks to his famed trips back and forth to Washington, D.C., on this very railway. Make your way to places like the Delaware Art Museum , Fort Christina , and Nemours Estate , a stunning 200-acre garden and 77-room mansion that will make you feel like you’re back in the Gilded Age. After seeing the local attractions, check into the Hotel Du Pont , a 12-story Italian Renaissance Revival building that opened in 1913 smack dab in the middle of downtown.

NYC to Washington, D.C.

Heather Durham/Travel + Leisure

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional or Acela Duration: 3 hours, 40 minutes on Regional or 3 hours on Acela

Ride the Northeast Regional a few stops further to the nation’s capital, a journey that takes you through more cityscapes (including Philadelphia and Baltimore), with a smattering of green spaces in between. You can opt for the faster Acela if you're in a rush. Spend a weekend in D.C. exploring the wealth of historical sites and museums, including the National Mall and the National Museum of African American History and Culture . See a hit show at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts , or plan in advance to tour the White House . For a fittingly storied stay, book at The Watergate Hotel, which, yes, is the very one associated with the 1970s political scandal of the same name.

NYC to New York's Adirondacks

Train route: Amtrak's Adirondacks line Duration: 3.5 hours

Need a big breath of fresh air? Hop aboard this train that travels from New York City all the way to Montreal. But don’t worry, you don’t need to go that far to find wide-open spaces. The journey to Saratoga Springs is one of the most scenic train trips from NYC, winding through pastures and Hudson Valley towns like Rhinecliff and Hudson before coming to rest at the quaint rail station in Saratoga Springs. Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, the town has a long history as a spa destination due to its mineral-rich waters that first attracted visitors in the 1700s. When you arrive, make your way to the stunning Saratoga Spa State Park , a National Historic Landmark. See if there’s a show playing at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center , and explore the delightful downtown full of shops, restaurants, and landmarks that celebrate the town's horse racing heritage. Spend the night at the Adelphi Hotel , a historic boutique property with modern rooms, complimentary minibars, and spa-like bathrooms.

NYC to Montauk, New York

Train route: Long Island Rail Road Duration: 3 hours

Amtrak isn’t the only train game in town. You can also board the Long Island Rail Road to Montauk for a seaside break. During the ride, the views quickly transform from high rises to small towns as you make your way through Long Island, taking a nearly straight shot down the coast until you hit the very tip of the island. Montauk has long been favored as a summer escape thanks to its idyllic beaches, but don’t skip over it for a fall or even winter escape for a crowd-free scene. Visit the Montauk Point Lighthouse, walk along Ditch Plains Beach, and set out on a horseback ride with Deep Hollow Ranch , the first established cattle ranch in the U.S. Then, rest at Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa , a hotel boasting a private beach, complimentary beach cruisers, and several delicious dining venues.

NYC to Sleepy Hollow, New York

Train route: Metro-North Railroad Duration: 53 minutes

For an easy getaway, head to Grand Central Terminal and take the commuter rail, which snakes north through the city before popping out in greener pastures once you hit stops like Greystone. With about 10,000 permanent residents, the village of Sleepy Hollow has a notable literary pedigree as the setting for Washington Irving's ghostly tale, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Visit the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and see the Headless Horseman Bridge that traverses the Pocantico River. For something a little less spooky, visit Kykuit , the former estate of the Rockefellers. Book a few nights at the Castle Hotel and Spa , a striking Gilded Age estate that now offers 31 luxury rooms and suites.

NYC to Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Train route: Amtrak's Berkshire Flyer Duration: 4 hours, 5 minutes

Operating between late May and early October, the Berkshire Flyer travels along the Hudson River Valley, treating passengers to views of the lush foliage. The train runs on Fridays, Sundays, and select holiday Mondays, making it perfect for a long weekend getaway. Stop in Poughkeepsie, New York, to visit the nearby Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site , one of the Hudson Valley's most notable Gilded Age estates, or ride directly to Massachusetts. Once you're in Pittsfield, explore some of the Berkshires’ top attractions , from the hiking trails at Mount Greylock to the Berkshire Museum’s collection of 40,000 objects spanning art, science, and history.

The best train trips from NYC for a scenic rail adventure

New York City is just a few hours from historic cities and beautiful communities accessed via train—and with breathtaking views along the way!

As much as the U.S. is heavily car-dependent and the American past time is a good ol’ summer  road trip along historic routes across the states, the Northeast is definitely spoiled with accessible rail connections making it easy for rail aficionados, business travelers, tourists and anyone to sojourn between cities and small towns for quick day trips and weekend getaways in any season. New York City, especially, is within 10 hours of some historic cities and beautiful communities accessed via train—and with breathtaking views along the way!

Even though the region doesn’t have sweeping scenic train rides such as the California Zephyr going into the Rocky Mountains or the Coast Starlight route with Cascade Mountains and Pacific Coast views, the New York/Northeast route can still boast of historic landmarks and ruins along the Hudson Valley, sparkling waters of the Connecticut coastline in summer, and truly spectacular fall foliage in autumn.

Check out these direct train routes that’ll offer up scenic views right outside your window.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

An Upstate New York rail bike company is offering a workout with a historical twist on its rail bike rides—the only one of its kind in the U.S.

Finger Lakes Rail Riders in Penn Yan claims to be the only rail bike company in America which provides a historical narration of the area as you pedal through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Upstate New York’s wine country .

They were also awarded a Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award earlier this year, according to an announcement on their Facebook page .

At FLRR, riders will travel in pairs, with a solo seat option to ride with the guide, along a mostly flat five-mile path . The two-hour excursion includes a 25- to 30-minute narration of Yates County history, delivered with a humorous touch by your guide through a two-way radio on each bike.

Think Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” but Upstate New York style.

Over the course of your journey, you will see working farms, relics from the railroad that was once there, and a one-room Mennonite schoolhouse. Participants are encouraged to ask questions along the way.

Adirondack RailBike Adventures

See rail bike companies across Upstate NY

Rail bikes are a unique way to see the state's beautiful landscapes.

“People can come and ride on existing railroads that have been here since 1851,” founder and owner Kathy Ferron told RochesterFirst. “They can get a little exercise, they can see some beautiful scenery — Yates County is an absolutely spectacular place to see.”

While in the area, visit some of the finest Penn Yan has to offer in the Finger Lakes , including paddling on beautiful Keuka Lake , and not one, but two award-winning ice cream spots, The Spotted Duck and Seneca Farms .

FLRR rides run Sunday through Tuesday and Friday through Saturday from now until October 29. The cost per two-seater bike is $88 and there is no age limit to how young or how old a rider has to be.

One person can pedal for two, as long as their fitness level allows it.

FLRR answers more questions about their rides on their website FAQ page .

Rail bike options have grown over the years, giving some abandoned railroad tracks new life by allowing passengers to travel down them on two or four person machines. There are several companies across Upstate New York which offer different kinds of excursions and experiences. Some even offer pet-friendly rail bike tours.

20th Century Limited: What it's like riding the historic train

"Until you step off the train, you’re in 1948," said the conductor, as a group of women dressed to the nines in colorful suits, dresses and veiled hats climbed onboard, emphasizing his point.

For 65 years, the 20th Century Limited took passengers from New York to Chicago, carrying luminaries like Frank Sinatra, Walt Disney, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby and Marilyn Monroe. Now Hudson River Rail Excursions is giving people an opportunity to step back in time and relive the golden age of train travel, running day trips out of Penn Station to Albany on restored vintage rail cars from the late 1940s.

Since 2021, the nonprofit United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey has been running day trips along the Hudson, said Kevin Phalon, president of the society. "People love it," said Phalon, explaining that many passengers go all out for the experience, dressing up in vintage style. "We tapped into a wide demographic," he said. If they’re not "train people, they’re interested in travel, history, unique experiences," he said. "These are people who want to get in touch with this long-lost way of travel."

The season runs through early November, but train buffs from all over the world love this journey and the trips sell out almost instantly. In late August, said Phalon, a third train car was added to the trips — a sleeper/lounge car called the Swift Stream, adding 24-28 more seats, though in early September there were just a few left. Tickets for the 2025 season will go on sale early next year, and if you’re serious about snagging one, sign up for notifications at hudsonriverrail.com and be prepared to go online at the exact moment they become available.

The train leaves a little after 11 a.m., and passengers head to one of three cars attached to a regularly scheduled Amtrak train on the New York Central Main Line. The historic cars are instantly identifiable thanks to the red carpet rolled out in front — and passengers quickly learn that it was the rail line that initiated this famed status symbol.

The Hickory Creek is the most luxurious of the three cars, holding only 16 passengers who can spread out in a comfortable array of sofas and lounge chairs (the most coveted spot is the rear-facing love seat with panorama windows). A four-course lunch with entrees like braised short ribs, wine and soft drinks is served by a steward who delights in every detail, offering interesting tidbits about things like how the railroad’s chef came up with the French dressing (he was searching for "something continental"). Tickets for this car cost $379-$399 a person this season (prices have not been determined for next year, said Phalon).

The atmosphere is more laid back in the Tavern-Lounge No. 43, where seating for 32 is in a row of armchairs facing the windows or a few booths. In the new Swift Stream, passengers are seated at reserved tables for two or four in the lounge or in private suites that were once bedrooms. Lunch consists of assorted sandwiches (smoked turkey, salmon salad, something vegan), homemade potato chips and soft drinks (everything else is bring your own). Tickets in the Tavern-Lounge cost $179-$199 a person this year; Swift Stream tickets were $699 for four, $349 for two.

This year the organization also added several overnight trips to Chicago, and Phalon said more will probably be added down the road.

Pulling out of the station, the train rolls through some graffitied tunnels before the buildings of the Bronx come into view. The train mostly hugs the shore of the Hudson on the 2½-hour trip to the Albany-Rensselaer station. Along the way, passengers watch the scenery (especially impressive during the fall foliage season), getting glimpses of landmarks like the Hudson Athens Lighthouse, Bannerman Castle (a former munitions storage facility), West Point and Sing Sing State Prison. On select trips, rangers from the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites come along, pointing out many of the notable points of interest. The train moves at a fast clip, nearly 110 miles an hour, so it's wise to pay attention if there’s something you want to see.

Once at the station, passengers have about two hours as the train is turned around for the return trip. Most people head into town to explore Albany—" a highly underrated city," according to Clint Henderson, managing editor of the travel site The Points Guy. Henderson, who wrote about the trip for the site’s newsletter, made the most of his time in Albany, touring the state Capitol, taking in the view from the top floor of the city’s tallest building, Corning Tower, and visiting the New York State Museum, where he loved the display of a vintage subway car.

Once back on board, passengers are invited to tour the other cars, including a couple of restored bedrooms and the tiny kitchen where Hickory Creek meals are prepared. Snacks and sweets are served during the return journey, and there’s always the hope for a spectacular sunset as the train heads back into Manhattan.

Museum for a day

Once a year, the United Railroad Historical Society of NJ invites visitors to tour its yards in Boonton, NJ. Railroad Museum [For a Day] is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept 29. More than 12 restored train cars will be open to the public, including the Hickory Creek, Tavern-Lounge No. 43 and Silver Stream. Especially fun for kids is sitting upfront in a locomotive.
