Best travel insurance UK 2024 guide

good to go travel insurance uk

We all deserve a break now and then. And the last thing you want to think of when booking your holiday is something going wrong. But it’s better to be prepared than caught off guard. That’s why you should always consider travel insurance when going on a trip.

But how can you find the best travel insurance policy for your needs? Read our guide below to find out more.

Why do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance protects you financially if your trip away doesn’t go as planned and you incur unexpected expenses for delays, losses or medical treatment.

All travellers can benefit from travel insurance. But travel insurance is particularly important if you are going on an independent trip without a tour operator, because if something goes wrong, you will have no other help.

There are three main types of travel insurance:

  • Single-trip cover: this is the most typical form of travel insurance, covering you for a one-off trip or holiday. There will be a time limit on the cover that can range anywhere between one month and 365 days
  • Annual multi-trip cover: this allows you to make multiple trips, or have multiple holidays, in a 12-month period, all under the same travel insurance policy. There may be a cap on how long each individual trip can be
  • Long stay, or backpacker, cover: this is normally used for around the world trips, gap years, and longer cruises, and can last for up to 18 months

To find the best UK travel insurance, compare policies before you go to ensure you get the right coverage for you and the specific trip you’re planning.

How to find the best travel insurance policy

icons8-scales-96

When comparing policies to find the best travel insurance for your trip, you should consider:

  • Type of cover you need
  • Excess (how much you’ll be expected to pay out yourself before the policy will cover you)
  • Amount of medical coverage, and why pre-existing conditions aren’t included
  • Limit on baggage claims
  • Coverage for specific sports and activities
  • Any potential rewards and discounts
  • Add-ons, such as gadget insurance

Best travel insurance deals and discounts

Looking for the best travel insurance deals from the best travel insurance companies? In most cases, the easiest way to find the best travel insurance deals is to use a comparison website. Travel insurance comparison websites let you compare costs and coverage side by side to find the best UK travel insurance.

The four main comparison websites – Moneysupermarket, Comparethemarket, Confused.com and GoCompare – also often have certain deals and discounts when you buy travel insurance from them, offering some of the best travel insurance deals on the market.

Moneysupermarket : Find the same deal for less, and it will price match and give you a choice of a £20 gift card. Only on annual travel insurance.

Comparethemarket : Two for one cinema tickets with Meerkat Movies and savings at restaurants when you dine out or order pizza in with Meerkat Meals, as well as 25 per cent off coffee and pastries at Caffè Nero every day of the week through the Meerkat app.

(In November 2023, Confused.com and GoCompare had no deals or discounts for travel insurance).

Price is obviously a big consideration when you are looking for the best travel insurance – you’ve probably already spent a lot on your holiday. But you may be able to get much better coverage for just a few pounds extra, so it’s worth scrolling down the comparison site’s list of providers before buying.

Medical costs abroad will undoubtedly be the biggest expense you face if you fall ill abroad, so don’t scrimp on those.

Then think about your next biggest expense (probably cancellation/interruption of your trip) and make sure that you have high-value coverage for that.

If you find you can get much higher coverage (the maximum amount you can claim per type of claim, such as medical or baggage) for not very much more money, go for the slightly more expensive option.

Going direct

Comparison sites won’t always find you the cheapest deals, however. For example, Direct Line offers some of the best travel insurance with Covid cover and is not on comparison websites.

Some of the best travel insurance companies also offer discounts for buying directly from them, as follows:

Bundled coverage options

When looking for the best travel insurance for your holiday, it can make sense to buy a bundle of coverage under one policy.

Comparison websites will often offer add-on gadget cover, winter sports cover or cruise cover all under the one policy. If you need that extra cover, it is typically cheaper to buy your travel insurance this way rather than as separate policies.

What is covered by travel insurance?

The best travel insurance companies will offer you comprehensive coverage across all types of claims. It’s easy to compare the best travel insurance deals using a comparison website.

Medical coverage

This covers you for medical expenses you incur if you become ill or have an accident while away. The best UK travel insurance will have a high level of medical coverage.

For example, medical coverage will pay for any necessary treatment if you come down with severe food poisoning or you fall through a window and have to be taken to hospital in an ambulance.

  • Avoid hefty bills or debt for medical assistance outside the UK
  • Access better treatment – for example, at private vs public hospitals
  • Often, as long as you declare existing conditions or pending treatment or tests, you are covered if you fall ill during your trip (check policy exclusions)
  • Even the best travel insurance companies will likely charge you more if you have a pre-existing medical condition
  • You might have to pay part or all your medical expenses first, then claim on the policy afterwards
  • Even the best travel insurance companies do not cover events that happen after you have consumed alcohol excessively or taken recreational drugs or other substances

Trip cancellation/interruption

This insurance pays out the cost of your missed trip if you have to cancel or cut your holiday short due to unforeseen circumstances.

For example, cancellation insurance would normally pay out if you broke your leg just before you were due to travel and had to cancel your trip.

Interruption insurance would cover you if you had to come home early for certain reasons beyond your control – for example, if the area you were staying in was engulfed in wildfires.

  • Money you would have lost on pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses is paid to you under the policy
  • It can be especially valuable if the trip you are planning is very expensive, as this is money you would lose if you couldn’t go
  • You’ll usually only be covered if your trip is cancelled or cut short for specific reasons listed in your policy
  • You usually won’t be covered if you miss your flight because you are held by customs or cancel because of a work issue or a pre-existing medical condition that is not covered

Baggage cover

This insurance covers the cost of replacing your luggage if it is lost or stolen.

For example, if an airline loses your luggage in transit or your suitcase is stolen from your hostel while you’re away, you can make a claim for the cost of replacing its contents.

You may also be able to claim for costs related to baggage delay if the airline temporarily misplaced your baggage.

  • You can claim for the actual cash value of your belongings or the cost of replacing them (whichever is less)
  • High-value items, such as jewellery or sports equipment, can be very expensive to replace without travel insurance
  • Standard policies usually place per item and total limits on claims.
  • If you are taking very expensive items away, check your policy carefully to ensure that you’re covered (and potentially get a separate policy)
  • Some items could be covered by your home insurance policy, so check your policy carefully to see what is any isn’t. It’s also important to note that, should a lost item be covered by both policies, you can only claim once; an attempt to claim twice would be considered fraud

Personal liability

This insurance covers you if you are held responsible for harming another person or damaging their property.

For example, it covers you in situations where you cause serious damage to your holiday accommodation or accidentally stumble into someone else, causing them to need medical treatment.

  • The cost of defending yourself in a legal case or repairing/replacing damage could be extremely costly without travel insurance
  • Your travel insurance company will take over dealing with a foreign legal system
  • You’re covered for the cost of any compensation (up to certain limits)

Limits:

  • Not all travel insurance provides personal liability as standard
  • Policies may exclude personal liability while you partake in adventure activities
  • Claims related to you committing a crime or damage by wilful negligence won’t be covered
  • You likely will not be covered if you admit liability or make an offer to pay before talking to your insurer

Finding the best travel insurance with Covid cover

Looking for the best travel insurance with Covid cover? Many travel insurance policies now include cancellation cover for reasons related to Covid. This often applies within two weeks of being due to travel, according to the Association of British Insurers, but individual policies can vary.

To make a claim, insurers often require proof in the form of a medically approved positive Covid test. A lateral flow test or self-diagnosis is usually not accepted.

What Covid-related cover to look for

The best travel insurance with Covid cover should include the following:

  • Cover if you can’t start your trip because you tested positive for Covid before travelling
  • Cover if you or family members cannot return home because you/they test positive for Covid during the holiday
  • Cover for additional costs, such as alternative flights, accommodation and Covid tests
  • Cover if you cannot reach your final destination during transit due to Covid-19

Travel insurance providers with comprehensive Covid cover

Looking for the best travel insurance providers with Covid cover? Most travel insurance policies now offer some kind of Covid cover, but Churchill, Direct Line, M&S and Aviva have some of the most comprehensive offerings, with cover for cancellations and expenses related to Covid.

Tips for selecting the best UK travel insurance packages

Need some help picking the best UK travel insurance packages to make sure that you get the best travel insurance deals? Here are some tips for picking the best policy features for you.

Coverage limits

When looking for the best travel insurance companies to go with, check coverage limits. These are the maximum amounts your travel insurer will pay if you need to claim. You’ll see when you compare travel insurance policies that coverage limits vary for each type of claim and between policies.

The government-backed MoneyHelper website recommends that the best UK travel insurance should have the following minimum coverage for each type of claim:

  • Medical: £1m or more for travel to Europe and £2m or more for the US
  • Cancellation/interruption: £2,000 or more
  • Missed departure: £500 or more
  • Delay: £200 or more
  • Baggage cover: £1,500 or more
  • Personal liability cover: £2 million or more

Deductibles/excess

Deductibles, also known as the excess, is the amount you have to pay out of your own pocket before your travel insurance will start paying for your claim.

You have to make a trade-off when it comes to choosing the excess and the best travel insurance policy for you.

The lower the excess on a travel insurance policy, the better for you if you have to claim because you will have less to pay from your own pocket (or, more often, deducted from your claim).

But lower excess travel insurance policies are more expensive because the insurer knows it has more to pay out if you claim. Higher excess policies are cheaper, but you’ll have more deducted from your claim.

An exclusion on a travel insurance policy is an event the policy will not cover you for.

Common exclusions on a standard travel insurance policy may not be obvious. According to the ABTA – The Travel Association, these include:

  • Incidents that occur after drinking too much alcohol or taking drugs
  • Theft of unattended possessions
  • Sports, extreme sports and activities such as skiing, white water rafting and bungee jumping
  • Medical treatment resulting from existing medical conditions you have not declared or conditions preventable by vaccine or advisable medication, such as antimalarials
  • Medical costs if you stay abroad after your doctor says you are fit to return to the UK
  • Strikes and industrial action if it was known when you booked your trip
  • Rescheduled flights where the airline has cancelled and then rescheduled your flight
  • Travel to destinations where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel

To get the best travel insurance deals, one way around some of these exclusions is to buy add-ons for adventure activities. In addition, make sure to declare all pre-existing conditions and keep an eye out for any travel disruptions before you book.

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions are illnesses or medical conditions you have and are aware of before you travel.

Travel insurance companies will ask you to disclose any pre-existing conditions. If you use a comparison website, it will be among the first questions you’re asked before it shows you quotes. It’s important to be honest.

Some travel insurance companies, but not all, will offer cover for pre-existing medical conditions, while others will offer cover but exclude any claims arising from that medical condition. This will depend on the person being covered and the medical condition.

Most price comparison websites include an option to show insurers who do offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, so that would be a good place to start.

The following are likely to be considered pre-existing conditions you should disclose, according to the government-backed MoneyHelper website:

  • A condition where you are on a list for an operation
  • A condition where you are waiting for test results
  • Anything you have been to the doctor about in the last year, including minor things
  • Any serious conditions you’ve ever had – for example, cancer, heart trouble, respiratory problems or a mental health breakdown

A good tip for everyone, but especially if you have a pre-existing condition, is to buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday. If your condition gets worse and forces you to cancel your plans, you’ll be covered from the day the policy starts.

On family group policies, the cost will be determined based on the riskiest traveller (according to insurers), which could be someone with a pre-existing condition or an older individual. In this case, it is often cheaper for the group for that person to get a separate policy.

Add-on options

Add-ons are extras you can purchase in addition to a standard travel insurance policy. They cost a bit more, but you may find you’re not covered without them.

Gadget insurance

This covers things that a standard policy may not, such as your mobile phone or laptop. If these items are covered, you may find the claim limits are far less than the cost of replacing them.

Close-up of a person holding a phone taking a picture of a beaut

Before you add this option to your travel insurance, check your home insurance policy, because you may already be covered.

Winter sports/adventure activities

Riskier activities, such as skiing or white water rafting, often require extra holiday insurance because insurers think that you are more likely to need to make a claim doing these things.

Winter sports/adventure activities cover is worth getting, or you may find you are not covered for medical expenses if something goes wrong.

Standard travel insurance is generally meant for land-based holidays so you’ll need to opt for a specialist cruise policy if your holiday is a cruise.

European FCDO travel advice extension

Most standard travel insurance policies are invalid if you travel when the FCDO advises against “all but essential travel”.

This add-on allows you to travel to Europe with a valid travel insurance policy, even if the FCDO has advised against it.

This can be an expensive add-on, but if you really must travel to a risky area, you will need this extension in order to make sure you have cover.

Best holiday insurance summary

Choosing the right travel insurance is an essential part of enjoying peace of mind while you are on holiday.

When looking for the best travel insurance deals, don’t just pick the cheapest policy. Instead, look for the cover limits that match your requirements. For example, baggage cover of £5,000 isn’t worth having if your baggage is worth £1,000; cancellation cover up to £10,000 isn’t worth having if your holiday cost you £2,000.

The easiest way to compare the best travel insurance is usually by using a travel insurance comparison website.

Think about the sort of activities you’ll be doing while you’re away. You may need extra holiday insurance for things such as winter sports or scuba diving or if you are going on a cruise.

Be honest about any pre-existing conditions when buying your travel insurance, or you won’t be covered if you have to claim.

The best travel insurance is a safety net for you and your family to enjoy your trip away stress-free, knowing that you’re covered for everything from medical expenses to cancellations if things go wrong.

Frequently asked questions about the best travel insurance UK packages

Is travel insurance necessary for domestic travel within the uk.

Even where medical costs in the UK are covered by the NHS, a sudden illness could lead to other expenses, forcing you to cancel your trip, the costs of which travel insurance would cover.

Lost or stolen luggage and broken gadgets or other claims for damage can just as easily occur in the UK as abroad.

What is annual travel insurance, and is it a good option for frequent travellers?

Annual travel insurance is a policy that covers you for multiple trips away within any 12-month period. It is often cheaper than buying a separate policy for each trip if you are planning to go away multiple times in one year.

Annual travel insurance is also useful if you are planning a long trip visiting several countries, as often insurers require you to buy travel insurance before you leave the UK rather than abroad mid-trip.

Are there any travel insurance companies that specialise in certain types of trips or travellers?

Specialist travel insurers cater to specific groups of people. It can make sense to seek out travel insurers that cover your needs.

Adventures Insurance, Sports Cover Direct and Snowcard tailor their travel insurance to those who enjoy activity holidays and extreme sports, for example.

Senior travellers are the focus of policies from All Clear, Avanti, Co-op Insurance Services, Free Spirit Flex, Good 2 Go Extra, Goodtogo Insurance, Saga, Staysure and Total Travel Protection.

Insurers offering business trip cover include Allianz, Direct Line, Coverwise and Insure & Go.

How do I make a claim with my travel insurance company?

To claim on your travel insurance while you are away, make sure that you take your policy number with you and the emergency number for your insurer. If you are travelling abroad, take any international numbers too.

Call your insurer as soon as you realise you need to make a claim. Keep all receipts and medical expense forms. If you are travelling with other people, make them aware of your policy details and the insurer’s phone number in case they need to call on your behalf.

To make a claim when you return home, check the following:

  • You haven’t left it too late to make a claim
  • What you’re claiming for is covered
  • The excess is not more than the value of your claim (if so, it’s not worth claiming)

Notify your insurer as soon as possible for a claim form, send it back fast and keep a copy of it. You should also include copies of paperwork to support your claim, such as receipts or medical certificates (keep copies of the originals in case your claim is queried or refused).

goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Travel insurer goodtogoinsurance.com specializes in covering people with pre-existing medical conditions, even in severe or terminal cases. Knowing their target audience and aiming to serve them well, goodtogoinsurance.com offers a host of features for those worried about travelling with medical issues. Here are a few features offered by goodtogoinsurance.com that can benefit those with medical conditions:

  • Medical repatriation for you and a companion if medically necessary
  • Optional 24/7 Virtual Doctor Access to speak with a UK-based doctor for advice when you're abroad
  • Budget option: For those who want bare bones travel insurance only for medical emergency cover, the Silver plan doesn't include cancellation, baggage etc., and is cheaper as a result
  • Following emergency surgery and a 5-day hospital stay abroad, cover for a recuperation holiday and home help

In addition, there's no upper age limits. And goodtogo offers desirable features like Catastrophe cover on their top two tiers on most plans and the option to add cover for your gadgets . ( Scheduled Airline Failure/End Supplier Failure is now not included as standard, although you can buy it as an add on, too.)

Those going on a cruise can get cover for cabin confinement, emergency airlift to hospital, missed port and unused excursions. To learn more about market prices please see our article Average Cost of Cruise Travel Insurance UK .

Applying is pretty quick and easy, either on the phone or online. As part of the quote process you’ll disclose your medical conditions and answer a series of multiple choice questions, such as past treatments, any upcoming, scheduled treatments and whether you had any hospital stays in the past year. You don’t need a doctor's certificate or the names of any medications. Scheduled Airline Failure is included on all policies.

While not the cheapest in the market, goodtogoinsurance.com's features are more robust than many competitors.

For travellers just looking for medical emergency cover when they're on holiday, goodtogoinsurance.com’s medical-only Silver plan can be an interesting option. The Silver plan doesn’t cover mishaps like cancellation or lost baggage. But for those whose priority is protection against the potential financial devastation of a medical event abroad, the Silver plan can provide emergency medical cover at a more economical rate since events like cancellation or baggage are not included. (This would only work for you as an option if you're prepared to absorb any costs of a cancelled trip or lost baggage, however.)

What if I have a severe medical condition? If you're struggling to find Annual travel insurance to cover your medical conditions at a reasonable price, you may want to consider a single trip policy instead. Since those with a severe medical condition are riskier to insure, travel insurance providers are more comfortable providing cover for a known trip over a limited time, as discussed in our article on top tips for travel insurance with medical conditions .

For single trip policies, goodtogoinsurance.com will consider all types of conditions up to a very high level of severity. For annual multi-trip policies, however, goodtogoinsurance.com can cover a more limited degree of severity.

Over 65s: goodtogoinsurance.com will cover travellers of any age, whether you’re over 65, over 80 or even over 90!

Bottom Line: goodtogoinsurance.com can provide travel insurance for most people, even those with a severe medical conditions. Extra options such as the 24/7 Virtual Doctor and Gadget cover set goodtogoinsurance.com apart from the competitors.

Covid cover

All standard goodtogoinsurance.com policies now cover emergency medical treatment and repatriation if required for those who catch Covid-19 while abroad. They also cover additional accommodation and transport costs if you can't return home because you caught covid and were made to quarantine abroad.

Plus, Cruise policies cover cabin confinement and Platinum policies cover if you're confined to your accommodation.

Their Gold and Platinum policies and all levels of Cruise cover also provide cancellation for the following covid-related situations:

  • if you, someone insured on the policy or a travel companion catches Covid-19 within 14 days of departure
  • Cancellation if you, someone insured on the policy or a household member has to isolate at home due to covid
  • if you, someone insured on the policy or a family member is hospitalised or die due to covid
  • if you or anyone insured on the policy, or a family member are hospitalised or die due to Covid-19.

goodtogoinsurance.com Customer Reviews and Ratings

Is goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance any good? goodtogotravel insurance rates well for features, in particular their Platinum policies. But how is goodtogo's customer service? We've read through hundreds of reviews to see what real customers have to say about goodtogoinsurance.com travel insurance. Here's what we found:

goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance Trustpilot

goodtogoinsurance.com has earned an impressive 4.7 stars out of 5 at Trustpilot , with nearly 8 out of 10 customers giving goodtogoinsurance.com a full 5 stars indicating an Excellent experience. But when something goes wrong, what do customers experience? Here is a sample of the more common comments and some remarkable complaints left on Trustpilot:

"Good service and they answer the phone, will use again." "Have used goodtotgo on several occasions and always found them to be efficient & on the one time my husband had to cancel a trip, the claim was dealt with speedily." "So happy to renew with you, covid was explained and only paid a little extra, we had a claim a few years ago it was really straight forward just a phone call we had little else to do, every thing was done for us..." "I have been diagnosed with Bladder Cancer and needed extra Travel Cover. My annual travel insurance company didn’t want to know. I contacted Goodtogo spoke to a very nice Lady, after a few questions about my Cancer I got full cover for my forthcoming pre Surgery Trip. Would certainly recommend Goodtogo." "We have been waiting over two years for them to pay a medical bill on a trip we took to the US. My disabled son needed an emergency surgery, and we chose this company because they said they would cover his pre existing medical conditions. The hospital says we owe them $89,000 as goodtogo are refusing to pay the full amount of the bill. They have not communicated with us about this at all. Communication is terrible (for claims, not for when you’re buying the policy) and they have caused us a great amount of stress."

Note: there were also a number of complaints from the first half of 2020 related to Covid-related trip cancellations. It seems that trip cancellations were not covered to many customers' satisfaction. goodtogoinsurance.com has since come up with new COVID-19 policies that cover cancellation if you catch COVID-19 before you travel and need to cancel your holiday. If this is a priority for you, it may be worth paying extra for this cover.

How do goodtogoinsurance.com Prices Compare?

We compared goodtogoinsurance.com's premium Platinum plan against similar, competing plans from Free2Travel and Free Spirit, and found that goodtogoinsurance.com's prices were frequently on the high side.

For example, goodtogoinsurance.com's Platinum plan cost 2X for cover for aneurysm and a stent in Europe vs. Free2Travel and Free Spirit's prices, but in some cases their prices were in line with competitors. The table and charts below illustrate sample prices for a 65-year-old traveller with various conditions for premium plans with £10 million of medical, £5,000 of cancellation and £3,000 of baggage cover.

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to each individual's details, so please just use this following data for general educational purposes only about the travel insurance market; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

goodtogoinsurance.com Gold and Platinum Standard Features

goodtogoinsurance.com includes cover for Emergency Medical, Cancellation and Baggage on their Gold and Platinum policies, limits for which can be found below in the Policies section. Their Silver plan is a "medical only" insurance plan.

For more complete details like inner limits and exclusions, please see the policy documents .

Goodtogoinsurance.com Optional Extra Coverages

Goodtogoinsurance.com offers a wide range of extra coverages to protect you while you’re abroad. For instance, you can buy winter sports cover, cruise cover and gadget cover to protect mobile phones and tablets when you go abroad.

Goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance Cover Plans & Limits

Goodtogoinsurance.com offers three tiers of travel insurance: Silver, Gold and Platinum. While all three offer the same £10 million of emergency medical cover, the tiers differ in limits for other coverages. Platinum has the most robust set of features. For instance, the top-tier Platinum plan protects holidays valued up to £5,000 against cancellation or curtailment, whereas the entry-level Silver plan is structured as a medical-only plan and doesn’t offer any cover for cancellation, baggage, etc.

To better understand the value of oodtogoinsurance.com travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance vs Fit2Travel Travel Insurance

Fit2Travel

Fit2Travel is another travel insurer specializing in offering cover to those with pre-existing medical conditions. Fit2Travel plans are typically more economical relative to others in the market for the level of cover, but you don't get perks like aftercare cover post hospitalization once you return home to the UK.

Bottom Line: If you want features like cover for home help after a qualifying surgery on your return home to the UK, a recuperation holiday or optional 24-hour doctor advice then you might be happy to pay more for goodtogoinsurance.com. If price is your priority, you're likely to find a cheaper premium with Fit2Travel.

goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance vs Free Spirit Travel Insurance

Free Spirit

Another medical-specialist for those travelling with health conditions, Free Spirit offers a host of optional extras like aftercare following hospitalization abroad, which covers home help, cosmetic surgery, dental treatment, physiotherapy and UK convalescence. Prices are typically close to average, although can vary depending on the condition.

Bottom Line: Free Spirit provides aftercare once you return home to the UK (e.g., physiotherapy, cosmetic surgery, etc.), but goodtogoinsurance.com stands out for the optional 24/7 Virtual Doctor and recuperation trips. If price is a priority, Free Spirit is likely to be cheaper.

Is the TV advert accurate?

I phoned for an annual Europe insurance quote for myself and my wife, speaking to Sandi. I have had quotes from four other companies who insure existing medical conditions. However, when it came to the quote time, having taken all our details, good to go would only quote for a single trip and not annual, which I didn’t understand as all other companies gave a quote without issue. Anyway, it’s left me thinking “is the advertisement onTV contravening advertisement rules? I wonder!!

Try not to make an error it will cost you

I'm 71 and arranged travel insurance. Good price good service and you get to speak to real people not robots. However in my initial information I put a wrong digit on my dob. Only discovered it when I tried to log in. On contacting them I was informed, to change that one digit I would be charged £34.13! I sent a letter of complaint as I thought for such a big company with a reputation that is good and for a small error, on my part, it was a little unworthy. No budging. So I cancelled and went somewhere else which is a shame. So be careful folks.

The controversy over ticket prices for the Oasis reunion tour is a topic we've covered a lot in the Money blog...

Now, Liam Gallagher has been joking about how much they cost.

In a series of posts on X, the band's frontman was asked by one fan if he had any spare tickets.

"Shit loads, but they're really expensive. 100 thousand pounds. Kneeling only," Gallagher replied.

After one social media user wrote: "Didn't expect them to rip the fans off as much as they have done. It's genuinely a shame," Gallagher replied: "SHUTUP."

One person asked how his mum Peggy felt about the reunion.

"She's gutted she couldn't get a ticket", Gallagher responded.

Many fans were shocked by costs for the band's reunion tour - which saw standard tickets more than doubling from £148 to £355 on Ticketmaster.

Others fans were left angry and disappointed at being left empty-handed, having waited in an online queue for hours to buy tickets.

Yesterday, the competition watchdog announced it would be investigating Ticketmaster over its use of dynamic pricing for the upcoming Oasis gigs.

Visa says it is planning a new service which offers more control and better protection to people paying bills by bank transfer.

The dedicated service for account-to-account (A2A) payments will launch early in the UK next year, it said - with an "easy to use" resolution service that could make it easier for customers to claw their money back if something goes wrong.

Visa said consumers using the service will be able to monitor their payments more easily and raise any issues by clicking a button in their banking app, giving them a similar level of protection to when they use their cards.

Biometrics will also be incorporated to offer a new level of security, it added.

Royal Mail is hiking the price of first class stamps again - this time by 30p.

From 7 October, they will increase to £1.65, while second class stamps will remain at 85p.

In April, first class stamp prices increased by 10p to £1.35, and by 10p to 85p for second class.

Royal Mail said it had sought to keep price increases as low as possible in the face of declining letter volumes, inflationary pressures and the costs of maintaining the Universal Service Obligation, under which deliveries have to be made six days a week.

It added that letter volumes have fallen from 20 billion in 2004/5 to around 6.7 billion a year in 2023/4.

This means the average household now receives four letters a week, compared to 14 a decade ago.

In the same period, the number of addresses Royal Mail must deliver to has risen by four million, meaning the cost of each delivery has also risen.

Nick Landon, Royal Mail's chief commercial officer, said: "We always consider price increases very carefully.

"However, when letter volumes have declined by two-thirds since their peak, the cost of delivering each letter inevitably increases."

He called for the universal service to be adapted to reflect changing customer preferences, saying the financial cost to meet the current demands are "significant".

"The universal service must adapt to reflect changing customer preferences and increasing costs so that we can protect the one-price-goes anywhere service, now and in the future," he added.

Postal regulator Ofcom said this week that Royal Mail could be allowed to drop Saturday deliveries for second class letters under an overhaul of the service.

Up to 60 new Wagamama restaurants could be coming to the UK.

The Asian food chain's owner, The Restaurant Group (TRG), said it wanted to operate between 200 and 220 premises across the country as part of a long-term plan.

It's currently on track to open 10 new sites this year, which would create around 500 jobs, according to The Caterer.

It comes as TRG posted its financial results for the year ending December 2023.

It said Wagamama saw its dine-in like-for-like sales increase by 11%.

It's other brand, Brunning and Price Pubs, saw sales go up by 10%.

TRG's chief executive Andy Hornby said 2023 was a "genuinely transformational" year for the company.

"We traded strongly throughout the year thanks to the phenomenal efforts of our restaurant and pub teams," he said.

"We are on track to open 10 more Wagamama sites in the UK during 2024 and we have acquired 100% ownership of our Wagamama business in the USA."

He added that he was "confident" that the company would continue to grow in the years ahead, despite the "challenging" consumer backdrop.

Amazon has announced it will boost pay for tens of thousands of its UK workers by nearly 10%.

The online retail giant said the minimum hourly wage for frontline staff would rise to between £13.50 to £14.50, depending on their location. For those with 36 months' service, the increase will be to between £13.75 and £14.75 an hour.

Amazon said the pay rise was worth at least 9.8% and will come into effect on 29 September.

However, GMB, the union representing Amazon workers, said the move was "too little too late" from bosses who have been "forced to act by workers' industrial action".

Amazon workers in the UK have staged a series of strikes recently, including a walkout of hundreds of staff at the site in Coventry in March.

The company said it has invested £550m in increased pay for UK operations employees since 2022, representing a 35% increase in the hourly rate over the period.

Amazon UK's country manager John Boumphrey said: "Our frontline employees across the UK Operations network are a huge part of the success of our business and we appreciate everything they do to deliver for our customers."

One of the Big Four accounting firms has told staff it will start monitoring their office attendance in a bid to increase in-person working.

PwC UK told employees that it will be sending out working location data every month to track their attendance, according to the Financial Times.

The policy will be introduced from January to give people time to plan.

The company told Sky News that it had adjusted its hybrid working approach and staff were now required to spend at least three days a week with clients or in the office.

Previously, they were expected to come in at least two days a week.

Laura Hinton, managing partner at PwC UK, said face-to face working was "hugely important" to the firm's operation.

"This feels right for our business and right for our people, given our focus on client service, coaching, and learning and development," she added.

"At the same time, we continue to offer flexibility through hybrid working."

IKEA customers could get their hands on a free breakfast as well as money off their shopping this weekend - as long as they turn up in their pyjamas.

The furniture retailer is offering a coupon for £15 off £50 and a cooked breakfast to anyone who rocks up at their stores in their PJs on Saturday.

You have to be an IKEA Family member to benefit from the offer, however it's free to sign up and can be done online.

According to IKEA's terms and conditions, pyjamas are "soft, loose clothing comprising of the following elements: trousers (or shorts) and a shirt which are worn to bed".

It said it would determine what constitutes pyjamas on the day.

Aside from its store in Hammersmith, London, where only breakfast rolls will be available, customers will be able to grab one of the following meals:

  • Free small cooked breakfast
  • Free small vegetarian breakfast
  • Free children's breakfast if aged 16 and under
  • Free bacon breakfast roll
  • Free sausage breakfast roll
  • Free vegetarian breakfast roll

Breakfasts have to be redeemed between 9.30am and 11am.

Reality star Gemma Collins has urged the nation to "pay attention" to their pensions after revealing she did not have one - until today.

The 43-year-old TV personality has joined a campaign encouraging people to take stock of the funds they will have later in life.

She told Sky News: "I myself haven't got a pension. I'm self-employed. I was just like the nation needs to wake up.

"It's September, we're all taking stock of our lives again, we're having that life admin moment and we really need to be paying some attention to our pensions.

"Before we know it, we're going to be old and we're not going to have any money."

The Only Way Is Essex star added: "If I urge the nation to do anything today, it's to pay some attention to your pension, and that's coming from me, the GC."

She explained that she probably had "racked up" some form of automatic pension due to working multiple jobs when she was younger, but she "wasn't aware of them" until she was approached by the campaign.

"I'm definitely putting in my pension from today, and I'm so excited. It's the best decision I've ever made," she added.

Pension Attention is an industry-led engagement campaign co-ordinated by the Association of British Insurers and the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association.

A survey for the campaign found just 23% of people have organised their finances for later life.

The campaign is encouraging people to find out if they have any lost pension savings, log into and check pension accounts and consider how much they will need for retirement

Mark Smith, spokesman for the Pension Attention campaign, said: "Most working people in the UK have a pension, but many don't know how to find information about these savings.

"We're asking all UK adults to think about where their pensions are, what's in them and to ensure that things like names and addresses are up to date."

In a major U-turn, John Lewis has brought back a scheme that will see it price match 25 of its biggest competitors.

The high street giant has said around 30,000 prices will change next week as it reintroduces its "never knowingly undersold" price pledge.

The commitment had been in place since 1925 - but it was ditched two years ago over concerns it was less relevant to shoppers.

It's return aims to boost its value perception among customers and will affect priced offered in-store and online.

The brands being matched on price are:

  • Amazon (on technology)
  • The Entertainer
  • Furniture Village
  • Harvey Nichols
  • House of Fraser
  • Mama's and Papa's
  • Richer Sounds
  • Smyths Toys

Bosses said the pledge will be backed by its largest marketing investment to date, with a significant advertising campaign also launching on Monday.

Peter Ruis, who was appointed boss of the retail business in January, said improvements in technology mean that they can operate a "better" version of the scheme.

"Customers have recognised our quality but there were questions over whether our value offer has been sharp enough in some areas," he said.

"The pricing mechanism we had before wasn't fit for purpose so changing that has absolutely been the right thing.

"What we are doing now, and what the technology is enabling us to do, is really different, and customers will see the benefit of that."
