I recently had the pleasure of booking a glacier hike with the Anchorage Downtown Tour Group, and although Russ, our tour guide, did not accompany us on the glacier itself, he provided excellent transportation services and was very knowledgeable about the area. Throughout the trip, Russ ensured that we were comfortable and well-informed. He picked us up promptly from our Airbnb and drove us to the starting point of the glacier hike. During the journey, Russ shared interesting facts and stories about the surrounding area, giving us insights into the history and significance of the glacier we were about to explore. Even though Russ did not physically accompany us on the glacier hike, his knowledge and passion for the region were evident. He provided us with essential information about safety precautions, proper gear, and what to expect during the hike. This preparation was invaluable in ensuring that we had a successful and enjoyable experience on the glacier. After the hike, Russ was waiting for us at the designated meeting point and drove us back to our Airbnb. He even made a couple stops at his favorite places on the way home so we could see more of Alaska. His punctuality and attention to detail made the entire transportation process seamless and stress-free. I greatly appreciated his expertise and the convenience of the transportation he provided. His knowledge about the area and his dedication to ensuring our safety and enjoyment made the overall experience with the Anchorage Downtown Tour Group a positive one. WE WERE SCAMMED!! DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY! We booked the Matanuska Glacier walk tour by this company through TripAdvisor/Viator. Three weeks prior to the tour, the owner (Russ) called us stating that Viator was excessively marking up his tours and that it was much cheaper to book directly with him. His company seemed legit so we cancelled through Viator and booked directly with him and paid $538.00 The night prior to the tour Russ informs us that he is having trouble finding a driver to provide the tour. He offers a different tour in Seward but we decline as we just did a similar tour when we were in Seward the previous week. We mutually agree the tour will be cancelled and we will be refunded. 2 weeks later and still no refund! I have messaged him 3 times on WhatsApp with no response. I called and he declined the call. I emailed through his site- no response. Called with a different phone number and he answered (he didn't know it was me) and he said he had been busy but would do the refund right away. Still no Refund! P.S. Be aware that he may respond to this review somehow blaming me for this issue... I see this trend with other similar negative reviews. Everything printed here is exactly how things happened.

I am an airline pilot and was staying at the Hilton right across the street from Anchorage Downtown Tours. I walked in and asked about a 3 to 4 hour day tour of Anchorage. The owner, Russ, was very accommodating and set me up for a tour starting only two hours later. Eventually the group grew to three people and Russ picked us up at the Hilton promptly at 11. This was exactly what I was looking for. I spent a very enjoyable four hours with Russ, who grew up in Alaska and who knows the state backwards and forwards. Russ has a great deal of civic pride as well! Russ gave us a comprehensive look at the after-effects of the big earthquake during the 60s, where entire homes were moved up to two or three city blocks! The ground shifted so much it made a once perfectly flat neighborhood into a neighborhood with lots of hills! Russ has a sharp eye for wildlife, and besides mountain goats and sheep, we actually got to see a moose! Ross absolutely loves his home state, and you will learn a lot driving around with him. And have a pretty good time doing it, as well!

Fantastic tour with loads of local knowledge. We saw lots of wildlife. Learned a ton about the history of the area. Recommend very highly.

They were unknowledgeable, disorganized, and did not return calls. The owner "Russ" is incredibly rude and Badgers customers. Don't trust any positive reviews he's harassed Yelp into deleting any negative reviews. If you want to really experience Alaska I would recommend some of the outfits out of Talkeetna as I've found them much more passionate about Alaska and better to work with. Russ stands behind his status as an Alaskan native, but really he's much more of a gringo.

I am not sure who you know at Yelp, but I will never spend money with them no matter what lies they make up about me or my company. I refuse to pay extortion. You never called me or worked with me and you know nothing about my work ethics or my passion for excellent customer service. You sir are a FRAUD. This is defamation of character, either write a review from your actual experience with my company or remove your FAKE review Immediately.

I was skeptical about traveling to Alaska during Pandemic in October but i talked to Russ (Downtown Anchorage tour group); he was so confident that i booked and finalized my itinerary at the same moment. Me and my wife would highly recommend Russ, he was experienced, funny, helpful and one gem of a person. He really loves his work. The tours were flexible, we stopped at a lot of scenic locations where you could just close your eyes and feel in heaven at places like Reflection Lake. Glacier hiking was one hell of an experience as this was something pretty new we tried. We cannot forget the pure blue ice up at Matanushka glacier. We saw the iceberg in fresh running water, tasted the fresh Halibut fish in Whittier, and had lunch at Long Rifle Lodge (included in the tour) which had a perfect location. He picked us from the airport a night before our tour, that was a sweet gesture. He was very passionate about fossil hunting and taught us a lot of ways to explore areas around Anchorage. From Earthquake effects, to wildlife trail we explored areas of ALASKA that we might not have, had we not booked him. As he knew we were from FLORIDA during last night of our tour he drove us to the Flat Top Mountain where we experienced first snowfall of the season. We shall travel Alaska again next year as this was once in a lifetime experience for us.

This is the best tour agency that we could have ever asked for. Gus, the man who handled all of our business, so over the moon helpful! My parents are older and needed help with feeling Comfortable with the train tour they were doing. Gus made us feel valued and cared for, although we Know we were not the only People he talked to on a daily basis. This agency is dedicated to showing AK in a special way that honors the beauty that surrounds. Cheers to Downtown Tours in Anchorage AK! Thanks for years to come.

My wife and I were thinking about an overview tour of Anchorage and stopped in at the end of the day to this tour company and spoke with Russ. We decided to do the 2 hour overview tour the next day and called in the morning to schedule it with an emphasis on seeing the Beluga Whales and moose. Russ checked the tide schedules and said the probabilities were high to see the whales if we left right away which we decided to do. We were picked up at our hotel less than 15 minutes later and went out stalking whales and moose! Russ is an excellent tour guide, totally knowledgeable about the city, where wildlife hang out and he is especially fascinated and knowledgeable about earthquakes and the resulting earth changes. We thoroughly enjoyed his commentary! Since the whales migrate many miles up the Turnagain Arm they are not always visible in the short window of time of our tour and we missed seeing the whales. Which Russ took as a challenge to make sure since we missed the whales he would make sure we saw a moose...even in the December snowy/cold weather! Russ exceeded the booked tour time determined to find a moose and succeeded!! We absolutely positively appreciated Russ's dedication to ensure we had a memorable tour!

Great Day Out !!

My wife and I wanted a tour of Anchorage, so we called Russ, based on a review I saw on this location. Boy, am I glad I did. Within the hour, we were whisked away by Russ on a Very Informative and Interesting trip around Anchorage. His knowledge of the geography, animals and people were simply outstanding. We both enjoyed ourselves and learned a lot more than expected about the history of Anchorage. Certainly more than we would have learned on a larger coach tour. Plus the scenery was breathtaking ! In fact we were just walking through downtown, desperate of not finding any travel agency, when we came across Russ's office. We asked him if he would know any agency in town - instead of recommending another place, he started occupying himself with our problem (maybe not conscious of the great extent of the work). So we spent one and a half hour in his little office phoning, emailing and rebooking. Happily we walked out that day - annoyed of our airline we came again a few days later, doing the same procedure once again. Due to Russ’s knowledge, patience and cheap telephone contract ;-) we managed it this time. Thank you very much, Russ, we did really appreciate your help! And we are really curious about your movie!

Sunset City Tour

The Sunset City Tour has been exception this year. Voted the number on City and Wildlife Tour in Anchorage five years in a row. Anchorage Downtown TourGroup is proud to include the tour nightly and year-round in Anchorage. The last couple of months we have sited a large amount of City Wildlife. Lynx, Bear, Porcupine, Fox, Coyote and lots and lots of moose. What a wonderful adventure our guests have while touring the Anchorage Area. This tour leaves 4 hours prior to sunset and your never disappointed in the spectacular views and majestic wildlife. (wildlife vary during seasons)

The Lynx have been a frequent site this year. They are usually a rare siting and can be difficult to capture on camera. This summer we have had some exceptional luck.

The Salmon along Ship-Creek have been plentiful. We had a record run of King Salmon this year and our many guests have enjoyed the views only blocks from the heart of downtown Anchorage.

Beluga whale sitings in September are phenomenal.
